02/16/2024 - Disco Elysium (Harrier Du Bois & Kim Kitsuragi)
Disco Elysium is a weird one. It’s not really a game, it’s more akin to a novel with choices and skill points. Despite such structure, the story, cast of characters, atmosphere, and aesthetics makes up for it.
The story itself is one that requires involvement in the world since the mystery is linked to Revachol’s politics and individuals. As such, the game leads you to discover more about the world and the dynamics present.
The player character, Harrier, Firewalker, Tequila Sunset, or whatever can be considered as a blank slate due to his amnesia at the start of the game yet he does still have a distinct background and character in the past which contrasts the deuteragonist, Kim who is one of the few characters who matches my vibes (any introvert will do for that matter).
Other than the two contrasting buds, the side characters in this game are also surprisingly memorable for me. From Cuno’s outrageous attitude, the kid freezing outside the bookstore to the trucker that sings along waiting for the end of the strike.
Atmosphere and aesthetics for me is 10/10!!! It’s a favorite of mine especially the atmosphere of a cold ramshackle town close to the salty sea. It feels lonely and melancholic, but it’s homely and calming for some reason. Aesthetic wise, impressionism and the use of contrasting colors does wonders for this game!
I would say this is Perducci-approved especially for those who value visuals and story.
