·Soup joumou (pronounced "joo-moo") is the soup of Independence, the soup of remembrance, and the soup that celebrates the new year. The soul-warming dish commemorates January 1, 1804, the date of Haiti's liberation from France. Haitian tradition holds that the soup was enjoyed by the slave masters on the former French colony, while the Haitian slaves were forbid it. It was said by the slave masters that the soup was too good for them to eat. This soup was the touchstone of Haiti’s fervent wish for peace and freedom. Soup Joumou was a symbol of communion and brotherhood as well as freedom from their French oppressors. The soup is loaded with vitamins including your B vitamins, vitamin A,C and E. It is also high in iron and cooper.
