Someone should write a fic where Gwaine and Lancelot meet on the road before Lancelot ever goes to Camelot. They're in a tavern, sheltering from the rain, and over pints of ale Lancelot would tell Gwaine how much he wants to be a knight, how he's on his way to Camelot because he wants to help people, to protect them. And all the while Gwaine is sitting there thinking, "you poor sucker, you've got no clue about the First Rule." But Lancelot's genuine desire to help people gets to him and so Gwaine sits there getting drunker and drunker, wishing that knights were as good as Lancelot idealistically thinks. And he gets this absolutely crazy idea.

When Lancelot wakes the next morning, a still half-drunk Gwaine is sitting across from him. And he tells him, dumping a piece of paper and a signet ring on the table, "You can't be a knight in Camelot. You're not a noble. But I could be. So Congratulations, you're now Gwaine, Son of Lot of Caerleon. Take this to Camelot and they should welcome you as a knight."

Lancelot protests. Strenuously. But Gwaine knows the rules. As a peasant, Lancelot could never be a knight in Uther's kingdom, no matter how good his fighting or how noble his character. And Lancelot wants his dream so much that he agrees. From now on Gwaine will be Lancelot and Lancelot will be Gwaine.

And so Lancelot heads off to Camelot. He and Merlin meet as they do in canon, but Lancelot fumbles the introduction, unused to his new name, then ends up confessing all to Merlin. Merlin is more than willing to help with shenanigans and helps Lancelot practice his introduction so he doesn't screw up again, then introduces him to Arthur. Lancelot gets knighted and doesn't get outed as a fake, since the paperwork is valid (even if it's not his paperwork). He and Lancelot defeat the Griffin, with Lancelot discovering Merlin's magic, but Lancelot gets feted rather than exiled.

This gives Merlin an ally, which has various effects, lets Lancelot and Gwen court, and means that when Merlin meets "Lancelot" in the tavern brawl, he knows who he is.

I think it'd be a interesting change to see the spiraling consequences of.

La Bohème ❤

[Merthur. 1980's AU. Bookshop AU. Fluff. Comedy. Angst. Hurt. No happy ending. Background Perwaine and Gwenlot. 17271 words.]

It was February 1982. Somewhere in London.

A peculiar young man owned a bookshop.

“Welcome to La Bohème! Here, we are queer and we don’t care. Do you wish to indulge yourself in Whitman? Then be my guest! Maybe you're more a Blake kind of guy? Bookshelf on the left, right at the bottom! Whatever you need, chances are : I have it! Mind you, what you are looking for might be used to fix a wobbly shelf. You can read it in, or buy it. You fix the price! If I believe it to be fair, it’s yours!"

And Arthur blessed the storm that made him step in La Bohème on that day in February 1982.

This is more than just a fanfiction. This a story. Let it be love one, or a tragic one. It is what it is.

And here, as my wine is running in my veins, I shall put aside the coward that I am to say that this is to you. From a place of care, a place of hope. From a place of love. For here, I shall not be afraid to say it. And show it.

So here's to the woman that shattered my beliefs. To the woman that gave a new rhythm to my heart. To the woman for who I wake up every morning. ❤

And I shall blame the alcohol. Like I always do. But is not alcohol just liquid courage?

Arwen is my NOTP, yes-- but I don’t think I’ve ever given a reason for that. 

It’s not just because of Merthur-- no, I am a multishipper. It’s how it’s portrayed. 

It’s not really chemistry, you know? It’s awkward and forced-- kinda like they’re expected to be together. 

And they are. Even though Merlin is based only loosely on the legend, it is still expected to follow through with the relationships. Gwen and Arthur had to be together.  I know the producers had that in their mind when they set out to write Merlin-- but sometimes I think it was just an afterthought. Like, “Shitt, we forgot to add something between Arthur and Gwen, but we’re going to do it anyway.”  There are so many straight and gay and poly relationships in Merlin that have been portrayed in a much better way.

For eg., Gwen and Lancelot are couple goals. The chemistry is there and they both have matching personalities. They love and respect each other. 

Another ship: Mergana. 

Where do I even get started? They created the villain/hero trope. And that line “She is the darkness to your light”? That struck me. Hard. They have chemistry but that got destroyed. There was no hope for redemption but there was always a tiny spark still there.  

There’s Merwaine. OK, Merwaine has to be one of the most underappreciated ships in this fandom. Gwaine loves Merlin. The love is there. Merlin is always looking out for Gwaine and Gwaine holds Merlin above all others. At first, it was just an amazhang friendship to me, but the more I looked at it, the more stuff I saw. 

Perwaine? It speaks for itself. Have you ever seen the TOTALLY NOT CANON SCENE in which Gwaine ‘died’? 

Freya and Merlin? I’m honestly disappointed by the lack of fanfiction I see. Freya may have only been there for one episode, but she broke my heart a million times over. Freylin had so much potential, but the writers killed off the character for no actual, valid reason. 

Will and Merlin is something I’ve never seen but something I do ship.  WIll was the first one Merlin’s age that accepted him. He was there for Merlin and it could’ve easily have been the top relationship/friendship on the show. But no! The writers killed off another character for no valid reason! 

Gwen and Merlin had potential too! Granted, it’s not amazing but I definitely shipped it in s1 ((a lot)

But my point is, Arwen was always forced. I love Gwen. She is sweet to everybody, loving, kind, caring-- I could go on forever. I love Arthur-- he’s a puppy. But them together is just something I don’t see. Maybe it’s a good ship-- but compared to the others, it seems pretty bland. 

If the writers had done it properly, my blog would be only Arwen-- but they didn’t. And I honestly can’t ship it. Not when there are so many other alternative ships that could've made the show much better.

General Appearance: She looks a lot like Gwen, and her hair is just as fabulous as Lancelot’s. She’s short like Gwen too, with a smile and look in her eye that can see through you.

Personality: She’s very perceptive. She sees and hears everything and there’s a wisdom she holds that’s unique to her. She’s athletic as well, she’s always running around creating some new game to play. She likes to win, but she’s not too much of a sore loser. She’s very caring, and it’s easy for her to make friends with anyone. Still, she’s not trusting to a fault, she has her secrets.

Special Talents: She learned blacksmithing from Gwen and sword fighting. She’s known to be one of the best of her generation.

Who they like better: I think she loves both of them equally, but she goes to them for different things. Gwen offers her security and self esteem while Lancelot teaches her honor and duty. They both would die for her and let her know how loved she is.

Who they take after more: Gwen, I think. She’s very similar to Lancelot but I think overall she’s most like Gwen.

Personal Head canon: She was so tiny when she was born that when Lancelot first held her he cried but then got worried she’d drown. She’s still tiny, but Lancelot believes she could save anyone.

The show Merlin had so many chances to throw the AND THERE WAS ONLY ONE BED trope in and they missed all of them.

I will never forgive the writers for robbing us of the merthur content or the gwenlot content for that matter. I mean YES QUEEN GWEN but I live with the idea that Gwen and Arthur is a friendship marriage and that they have their own romantic lives. No I don’t give a flying fuck if that isn’t something that happened in that particular time period
