The misogyny in almost all religions continues to be a disappointment as I go on with my studies. I was just beginning to read a Hindu text called Vivekacūḍāmaṇi, and right in the beginning it says this, already putting men above women:

It's so transparently hypocritical to constantly emphasize that you must look past the shifting physical forms around you as illusory (to the point of sometimes advising people to turn away from the material realm entirely), focusing instead on God and the divine spark within - and then to turn around and disregard the divinity within us all by saying that some beings are above others depending on which temporary, illusory form they're cloaked in during this lifetime. How did none of these supposed "sages" ever understand this? I guess a false feeling of superiority based on biological sex is too tempting and beneficial to give up, even to "holy men."

There is NOTHING spiritual or enlightened about misogyny. Nothing. It's showing that the writer has a lack of understanding about basic spiritual truth - that all is God and that there is no inherent hierarchy among living beings, all of whom possess the Divine life force - and it makes me suspicious of their ability to impart any real wisdom, just as I wouldn't want to listen to a Trigonometry teacher who hasn't yet mastered addition and subtraction. It's as shallow and unspiritual as caste systems or ranking people's inherent worth based on skin or eye color, and I reject it utterly.

However, to quote the Avadhuta Gita:

"One should never mind whether the teacher is a boy or one addicted to sensuous pleasure or whether he is an idiot or a menial servant or a householder. Would one give up a diamond which is incrusted with impurities? One should not mind whether the Guru is endowed with poetic learning or not. The wise should pick up the good that is in him. Can not a boat that has no vermillion painting on it, carry passengers across the river?"

I don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater and ignore these texts entirely because of the biases and prejudices of the writers, the way I did with the bible for decades. Just like with people, I want to look past those things and find what is good and true in them.

To receive loving attention. To be held in another’s compassionate gaze. To let that compassion in. To know that we are so deserving of that.

Some connections teach us how to give support, to pay attention to another person’s feelings and needs, to look after another. To take the lead and step in and step out of our own stuff. To give our time and attention, our emotional and physical strength. To offer the gift of our willing sacrifice. To discover our limits in the giving too. To give from a place of self-nourishment, not guilt.

Some relationships teach us the necessity of speaking up for ourselves. They force us to get honest about what’s not okay for us, what hurts, what feels wrong, what feels like ‘too much’ or ‘too little’. To become aware of when our boundaries have been crossed. To express our righteous anger, the part of us that feels unseen, unheard, not respected, abused. To respect ourselves enough to say “No”, despite the consequences.

Sometimes we learn through break ups, heartbreaks, the death and transformation of relationships. We find the courage to take a step out of something that’s unhealthy for us, step out of the old and into the unknown, step into aliveness, step into heartbreak and feelings of loneliness maybe, step into our power and honour our precious hearts as they close and open and close and open and...

Sometimes we grow by staying in relationship when we feel like leaving and stepping away. Staying present during conflict and misunderstanding, feeling our feelings of anger, fear, grief and exasperation, shame and guilt, expressing our painful or blissful truth. Finding power in the staying. Slowing down and looking together at the mess. Finding a place of reconnection, maybe. Making amends, maybe. Saying sorry, maybe. Owning our wounds and actions.

Sometimes relationship teaches us how to be with another and sometimes it teaches us how to be with ourselves. How to stop running from our precious aloneness. To find the joy in silence, stillness, solitude.

To be One. To be two.

To unify. To separate.

To sense when we are out of balance.

To sense when we feel neglected.

Smothered.

Numb.

Disconnected.

Empty. Full.

To take seriously our need to be alone.

To take seriously our need for companionship.

To know when we are hiding, afraid of being seen, avoiding connection.

To know when we are addictively abandoning ourselves for another, running from ourselves to meet another in codependency, expecting to be saved, fixed, mended, made whole.

Sometimes relationship is bliss.

Sometimes it is confusing, agonising.

We are called to touch the heights of intimacy.

We are called to touch the depths of our existential loneliness and deepest longings.

We are called to know ourselves.

All experiences on the path of relationship can teach us, change us, heal us.

Even in the struggle, we can find blessings and insights.

If we are willing to slow down and look.

If we are willing to stay curious and do the courageous work of softening into our embodied experience.

If we are willing to feel into the pains and pleasures of relating.

Sylphs and the Air Kingdom.

We go onto the elementals of Air! The Sylphs!

I don't know honestly what people think of the air elements, and the air elementals but they're anything but the gentle creatures they are. In truth the Air kingdom is more about the open heart and gentle approach to not get overwhelmed. If there's anything that can sum up the whole essence of the air kingdom is that.... It is Refinement. To Quote Vimalananda

"Most Westerners today believe that all their desires, and their sexual desires in particular, should be gratified immediately. But there is nothing speedy about refinement; it takes time and restraint. Refinement occurs automatically in all aspects of life, and especially in sex and in spirituality, if you just slow down. Westerners think the spiritual urge can be gratified in the same way that they gratify their sex urges. No wonder that most of them end up with fake gurus.”

If I already put the main idea is that of REFINEMENT. Then that means I should build on that with certain aspects of this refinement that bring that refinement, I would call them, Appeasement, Detachment, Slowing Down, and Service. I will preface, very explicitly that all work with Sylphs and Air elementals is better to be done through an intercessor, angel, god, etc and whatever else you take as a guiding and protective spirit instead of dealing with them directly.

Appeasing/Praying For Spirits of Air

I feel uncomfortable to even call it appeasing because these spirits usually are full of wisdom and light but often tend to be easily slighted or easily fickle if we are not careful with them. Do I mean that ALL sylphs are fickle or easily offended? of course not but the general flightiness of their elements can make them jump from one thing to another, to have that excessive force without grounding. Don't you find sometime when you get in argument to feel like you're "flying in rage" or flying heedlessly into the situation. That's all there's to it, pray for the spirits because if you die then who will pray for you? who would give you light and stability if you don't give it to them.

Detachment and Slowing Down

The best way to attain the detachment from the rushing winds and tempest is simply to slow down. If you're rushing through the prayer then you will get overwhelmed with it, if you rush through your prayer, exercises, and meditation then you will be rushed by it. If we remember the Undine's post then we can see the same reflective nature of spirits and that they often reflect our tendencies and behaviorism. If we come to the spirits rushing them like a tornado then the air element aspect of practice will start rushing us and pushing us like a tornado and we might want to slow down and take a breather. Even in Writing, in talking, in playing, in working, in praying, in sleeping, in doing your day to day life. Yes, the clock is ticking but the faster you go the more stuck you get. I am not advising people to like detach themselves emotionally or intellectually and become jaded but more of slowing down, so you can have that *space* between you and your life and not get overwhelmed.

Service

Service here implies serving someone something of value, that aspect is pretty weird to think of but when we take the time not to think about ourselves but to think of other we will find a great deal of blessings coming our way. If there's anything that Air elemental can teach you is that humbling presence when you walk out of water and Earth and see the sky above you. People can overlook how humbling the firmament look like, literally when you look at the Sky and see the great expanding heaven above you then you can't say or do anything but be in awe of the greatness of the world. What can we serve? That's a question for you to answer honestly, but that's an essential point I would like to emphasis in the Air. Serving elevates more than just being "here", there's a lot more to just grabbing stuff forcefully and grace plays a huge role in this. Let the Ray of Thine Intelligence and the warmth of Thy Love penetrate even unto us; then that which is volatile shall be fixed, the shadow shall be a body, the Spirit of Air shall be a soul, the dream shall be a thought. And no longer shall we be swept away by the Tempest, but we shall hold the bridles of the Winged Steeds of Dawn, and we shall direct the course of the Evening Breeze to fly before Thee.

…There is also an entire cottage industry of alternative medicine gurus who are essentially selling the snake oil of positive thinking. Throw in a little dietary and lifestyle advice, maybe some magic energy, and you have the whole package. Anything, it may seem, is better than the stark reality of biology. Patients with serious diagnoses like cancer are extremely vulnerable, and make easy targets for selling false hope.

But most people advising positive thinking mean well, and they may really believe it. It’s one of those folk wisdoms that many people believe but happen to be wrong. There is a legitimate scientific question here – is there any measurable effect from having a positive attitude in terms of survival or perhaps quality of life? It’s not entirely implausible that there would be. Attitude may affect compliance with treatment, a better appetite and therefore nutrition, and improved sleep. More speculatively it’s possible that increased emotional stress releases corticosteroids that suppress immune function.

But this question has been asked and answered years ago. Here is one review from 2010:

“Claims about these areas of research routinely made in the positive psychology literature do not fit with available evidence.”

Perhaps the definitive study involved over 1000 patients with head and neck cancer, and found:

“No statistically significant univariate or multivariate effects were observed for emotional well-being, and there were no effects limited to subgroups. These results stand in sharp contrast to the prognostic value of a variety of demographic and clinical variables.” (Read more at link)
