New Bracket Announcement!
This one is kind of huge compared to what I usually do, and it’s probably going to be a bit before there’s another one this big.
As such, I’ve divided it into four Blocks, which will each run separately before the winners of each block participate in the semifinals.
The theme this time is

Married Mongolian Women’s Hairstyle in the Yuan Dynasty
Mongolians have a long history of shaving and cutting their hair in specific styles to signal socioeconomic, marital, and ethnic status that spans thousands of years. The cutting and shaving of the hair was also regarded as an important symbol of change and transition. No Mongolian tradition exemplifies this better than the first haircut a child receives called Daah Urgeeh, khüükhdiin üs avakh (cutting the child’s hair), or örövlög ürgeekh (clipping the child’s crest) (Mongulai, 2018)
The custom is practiced for boys when they are at age 3 or 5, and for girls at age 2 or 4. This is due to the Mongols’ traditional belief in odd numbers as arga (method) [also known as action, ᠮᠣᠩᠭᠤᠯ, арга] and even numbers as bilig (wisdom) [ᠪᠢᠴᠢᠭ, билиг].
Mongulai, 2018.
The Mongolian concept of arga bilig (see above) represents the belief that opposite forces, in this case action [external] and wisdom [internal], need to co-exist in stability to achieve harmony. Although one may be tempted to call it the Mongolian version of Yin-Yang, arga bilig is a separate concept altogether with roots found not in Chinese philosophy nor Daoism, but Eurasian shamanism.
However, Mongolian men were not the only ones who shaved their hair. Mongolian women did as well.
Flemish Franciscan missionary and explorer, William of Rubruck [Willem van Ruysbroeck] (1220-1293) was among the earliest Westerners to make detailed records about the Mongol Empire, its court, and people. In one of his accounts he states the following:
But on the day following her marriage, (a woman) shaves the front half of her head, and puts on a tunic as wide as a nun's gown, but everyway larger and longer, open before, and tied on the right side. […] Furthermore, they have a head-dress which they call bocca [boqtaq/gugu hat] made of bark, or such other light material as they can find, and it is big and as much as two hands can span around, and is a cubit and more high, and square like the capital of a column. This bocca they cover with costly silk stuff, and it is hollow inside, and on top of the capital, or the square on it, they put a tuft of quills or light canes also a cubit or more in length. And this tuft they ornament at the top with peacock feathers, and round the edge (of the top) with feathers from the mallard's tail, and also with precious stones. The wealthy ladies wear such an ornament on their heads, and fasten it down tightly with an amess [J: a fur hood], for which there is an opening in the top for that purpose, and inside they stuff their hair, gathering it together on the back of the tops of their heads in a kind of knot, and putting it in the bocca, which they afterwards tie down tightly under the chin.
Ruysbroeck, 1900
TLDR: Mongolian women shaved the front half of their head and covered it with a boqta, the tall Mongolian headdress worn by noblewomen throughout the Mongol empire. Rubruck observed this hairstyle in noblewomen (boqta was reserved only for noblewomen). It’s not clear whether all women, regardless of status, shaved the front of their heads after marriage and whether it was limited to certain ethnic groups.
When I learned about that piece of information, I was simply going to leave it at that but, what actually motivated me to write this post is to show what I believe to be evidence of what Rubruck described. By sheer coincidence, I came across these Yuan Dynasty empress paintings:
Portrait of Empress Dowager Taji Khatun [ᠲᠠᠵᠢ ᠬᠠᠲᠤᠨ, Тажи xатан], also known as Empress Zhaoxian Yuansheng [昭獻元聖皇后] (1262 - 1322) from album of Portraits of Empresses. Artist Unknown. Ink and color on silk, Yuan Dynasty (1260-1368). National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan [image source].
Portrait of Unnamed Imperial Consort from album Portraits of Empresses. Artist Unknown. Ink and color on silk. Yuan Dynasty (1260-1368). National Palace Mueum in Taiper, Taiwan [image source].
Portrait of unnamed wife of Gegeen Khan [ᠭᠡᠭᠡᠨ ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠨ, Гэгээн хаан], also known as Shidibala [ᠰᠢᠳᠡᠪᠠᠯᠠ, 碩德八剌] and Emperor Yingzong of Yuan [英宗皇帝] (1302-1323) from album Portraits of Empresses. Artist Unknown. Ink and color on silk. Yuan Dynasty (1260-1368), early 14th century. National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan [image source].
To me, it’s evident that the hair of those women is shaved at the front. The transparent gauze strip allows us to clearly see their hairstyle. The other Yuan empress portraits have the front part of the head covered, making it impossible to discern which hairstyle they had. I wonder if the transparent gauze was a personal style choice or if it was part of the tradition such that, after shaving the hair, the women had to show that they were now married by showcasing the shaved part.
As shaving or cutting the hair was a practice linked by nomads with transitioning or changing from one state to another (going from being single to married, for example), it would not be a surprise if the women regrew it.

"Gugu~!" Carbuncle cheers

Whoa....Matthew really did well in this scene! One of the best examples of how to hit the right emotional beats!
- - - - -
(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished watching ‘Belle’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

After a loooooong...long wait...I finally got to watch the film with captions! I noticed that the On Demand title on SBS doesn't have captions...which is odd (maybe in a couple of days...they'll load it?). Every time I spot this in the TV guide...I instantly get it onto the DVR and of course...I'd be disappointed that there wasn't captions. This one was different though...as I noticed that there was Audio description...
...and of course...I hoped that it also meant that it included captions!!!! Glad I took a chance...even the DVR was filling up again (I'm down to 1 hour of space! So...I'll have to frantically delete!!!)
I did not expect how watchable this would be. I mean...maybe because I was lucky that my first Gugu film was 'Miss Sloane'? There are definitely other roles that she wasn't able to stretch.
Plus Tom! Wow! Come on....he was also killing it!!!
PS: The English so scandalised when it's revealed that their kids speak French (or at least show off their French fluency)!
PPS: It's a shame that we don't see Gugu and Matthew have a scene together...that would have been really interesting to see how capable Matthew is (which I know he is!).
PPPS: I did not expect the number of times I found certain scenes and dialogue funny! Was expecting really...dramatic moments (which there are...but at least it's not...well...the kind that I need to pick myself up sobbing on the floor...or having gone through a mountain of tissue like 'Beautiful Boy'
PPPPS: I considered cutting off the highlight 'Screen To Script' right when John says: "It's about all of us. It's about everything. Everything that's important." --- but then decided to go until the scene finishes as it's a reminder that sometimes...we have made an impact...but it isn't obvious that we have.
-------- HIGHLIGHT:
EXT. HOUSE OF COMMONS - DAY
JOHN catches up to LORD MANSFIELD as he approaches his carriage.
JOHN
M'lord if you find for the traders you would be formalising the law of the concept of insuring human cargo.
LORD MANSFIELD gives JOHN a glance, takes off his hat---
LORD MANSFIELD
That's correct.
---- puts his hat on the seat, turns to the chauffer ---
LORD MANSFIELD
Drive.
--- then climbs into the carriage.
The driver closes the door and goes to take his place. JOHN steps closer.
JOHN
Then know when you are gone, your legacy would have left Miss Lidnsay in a world worth more dead than alive.
The carriage starts moving.
LORD MANSFIELD
Miss Lindsay is not a slave.
JOHN starts walking to keep up.
JOHN
By the very grace of God!
LORD MANSFIELD gives the roof two knocks and the carriage stops.
LORD MANSFIELD
This is not about Miss Lindsay.
JOHN
Of course it is.
The nobleman stares back, seemingly stoically. But those eyes are drawn to fellow human equally as passionate about justice. A human teetering between anger and tears.
JOHN
It's about all of us. It's about everything. Everything that's important.
The father looks into the eyes of this young man intently. Searching. Clearly moved.
JOHN just stares back. Earnest.
LORD MANSFIELD breaks it. A small smile escapes as he considers what's been said.
LORD MANSFIELD
Mr. Davinier...
He stares at the youngster dead in the eye.
LORD MANSFIELD
...The world is a devastating place. You must learn to protect your emotions if you wish to prevent both matter of the law and love from devastating you.
JOHN casts his eyes down. Defeated. -------- My verdict of the film: 7/10 Link to the timestamp commentary: I was tempted to do one as I had a couple of reactions but then decided to just watch the whole way through (I'll put one up if there are requests for it! Chapter 148.2
Losing my mind a little right now. We FINALLY know what happened to Rynn and it's pretty much exactly what I thought, but somehow having it confirmed—in front of Gugu no less—makes it worse. Still, I am glad to see that she, beer gramps, and Shin seemed to be happy together. Just because they never stopped mourning Gugu doesn't mean they weren't able to live fulfilling lives.
Back to the beginning of the chapter, Fushi kind of has a history of violent outbursts, so them storming off to get into a fight is par for the course. Arguably the existence of knockers as a whole was a nice excuse to exert force and feel better about themselves, but the Renryrr arc had that scene after Kai, Hylo, and Messar died where they were definitely killing knockers not because they had to, but because they wanted to. They keep jumping to kill knockers in the present era at the drop of a hat, and if you recall there was one point where they pushed Satoru hard enough to knock him over (and there're tons of other times where they've handled him really forcefully). Anyways Fushi has anger issues, thanks for coming to my TedTalk.
I think most of my meta for Chapter 148.1 still stands, but there are some parts I'd like to alter in light of the new information we got from Gugu's flashback to Takunaha. I previously introduced the concept of Gugu's rules and how he finds it easier to follow them in Takunaha than in Yanome. I can't remember if I said so, but I guessed that something happened to Gugu in Takunaha after he was resurrected. Because he was walking towards Shin's reincarnation, so presumably they would talk. The scene just felt like it was building up to something. Anyways I thought if there was a reveal about that it would be something like "oh I was offered a job, I can go back to my old life almost exactly only without all of the people who made it great." But this was not that. This is people celebrating Gugu for being who he is, saying that there's a place for him here, because the people who loved him worked to create that place all their lives.
I wasn't very clear about this in my last meta, but what I think, and what Ooima's probably alluding to, is that the best thing for Gugu right now is to be with people who embrace him for who he is, and that place isn't Yanome. His acceptance of himself will come naturally after that. But even though Gugu wants to go back, the one thing he absolutely can't do is abandon Fushi like Shin abandoned him. Even though the circumstances are completely different, his rules are still holding him back.
Other than that, this chapter was really heavily focused on Gugu with much less time devoted to Fushi, but they were there reacting to his story, even if we couldn't see it. Rynn and beer gramps were their family too, so hearing more about their lives after they parted ways must have been painful as well. In between making sure their alive friends are happy, Fushi's also trying to honor their dead friends' wishes. Since Rynn and beer gramps would clearly want for Gugu to stay in Takunaha, by that logic Fushi should let him go. The other big thing is Fushi, despite believing they're "above" depending on their friends for help after the horrible experience of the Renryrr arc, is still receiving help from their big brother like always. In the same way that they're trying to protect Gugu, he's trying to protect them, and instead of realizing that no matter what, Gugu will always worry about them because he loves them, Fushi hears this and thinks "well I'm just not trying hard enough."
Despite this huge leap in the wrong direction, I think that Fushi is in the process of relearning how to practice their empathy again. Although they tried out a very literal method of seeing things from someone else's point of view, it worked, and after witnessing the effort they put in Gugu decided to be honest and tell them what's going on like Messar suggested.

Some of the funniest stuff to happen as a result of BatB2017
It was revealed that Dan Stevens didn’t know the lyrics to the movie’s title song.
Luke Evans was nominated for Choice Hissy Fit in the 2017 Teen Choice Awards.
Josh Gad got to play Lumiere in a Crossroad Musical.
In that same musical, Dan Stevens wore a Beast hat and danced with James Corden, who was in the full 1991 dress and wig.
Rebel Wilson played a parody version of Mrs. Potts.
Stanley Tucci was in denial about singing for the film, even in the presence of his insistent co-stars.
Dan Stevens and Luke Evans discussed how they and the rest of the cast could form a superhero team because of the other roles they had played (Luke/Bard the Bowman, Dan/Legion, Emma/Hermione, etc.)
Josh Gad tried to act like he was British in many of the marketing videos, to the eternal chagrin of Luke and Emma.
Luke, Emma, and Josh made snow angels out of rose petals.
Audra could not move through doors, nor could she sit down on any chair with a backing while in the Garderobe costume.
Apparently, there is a deleted scene where Gaston hands his rifle to Lefou and it goes off in Lefou’s hands, quickly followed by the distant sound of a dying cow.
Josh Gad’s horse misbehaved every time Josh mounted it that Josh has insisted it was an anti-semitic horse. His words, not mine.
At first, Ewan McGregor’s French accent sounded so Mexican that the directors had a small panic attack.
Josh Gad joked that his slightly manic expression on the poster of Lefou makes him look like “overweight Jack Nicholson.”
Dan and Emma were interviewed by mini versions of Belle and the Beast.
Josh Gad hosted a Disney trivia, but in reality, it was a chance for Gugu to quickly climb the ladder and become Josh’s favorite co-star.
Josh and Luke played a prank with BBC Radio 1.
Luke Evans had a Gaston sing-off with Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton.
