Making my Final 2D piece
The beginnings of my final 2D piece. and the Artist that inspires my use of collage.
This is the culmination of my 2D process and Inquiry work. The final development from the collage and painting work I started with.
Still keeping my theme of public transportation, the collaged items include train and subway tickets and some edited photocopies of them.
The use of arrows and collaged Scotrail route map reflect the map workshop that started my P&E work. The route the train takes id represented by the black line with white arrows. And is meant to be the focal point of the composition.
A moving image I made of the first three photos I took of the collage as I began constructing it.
A2 collage using dozens of photocopies of my artwork as well as train and subway tickets, copies of these tickets, photos of paisley Gilmour Street station, maps of Scotrail's central belt routes. and much more mixed in.
The perspective is from a birds eye view, or for me, the view using google maps.
this inspired by the smaller collage I made previously.
My collage in general are inspired by the paintings and mixed media work of David Salle, an American Neo expressionist visual Artist I have known and liked for years for his bright, vibrant happy mixed media collage-like paintings of overlapping imagery from many different source materials.
Towards the end I added gold foil and paper pieces to draw the viewer more towards the train route. and add more gold to my 2D artwork.
https://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/19/arts/design/review-david-salle-paintings-deliver-colliding-culture-at-skarstedt-gallery.html
This photocopy on my desk shows the Final 2D piece still in development. showing the many layers of paper that are now barley visible under all the new layers.
these collage are inspired by him but take a much different look as I keep with mostly monochrome photocopies to save money and use the black Gray and white to represent urban areas of the map. And blue and green to show areas of water and green areas.
the subject matter is again the route of my train to college, but its now more abstract and is represented by white arrows on a black background . Paisley Gilmour Street is represented with a colour reversed copy of a train ticket.
the use of making bigger and bigger collage from copies of my own work is a practice I've been perfecting myself for most of my art practice. from my HNC course to my current BA course I'm doing now.

How To Use References
Part one, making a new fantasy design. Someone suggested elves evolved from chalicotheres as a design to explore in this tutorial. So that's what I've got here. There will be two more parts for this series. One on how to utilize references for general human character design, and one touching on how to use references for characters that might fall under sensitive topics (for example, designing characters with certain health issues or who might fall a bit close to some stereotypes that make it hard to find useful references)
So here is my process for using references when I design new fantasy people or creatures.
(image description: four images of digital sketches with notes in various spots. The text reads "using references: creating new fantasy designs. Step one, brainstorm. Gather references." Near this text I have also written "chalicothere, elf, humanoid figure", and below this is a collage of images showing chalicotheres and some basic human anatomy.
The next bit of text says "Step two, study. Sketch over/recreate your references. Make notes for analysis!" The collage of images has been copied over and altered to have lower opacity. Loosely sketched simple shapes in bright colors over this show the basic structure of the chalicothere and human figure. Notes and smaller doodles nearby show and explain little details, like the unique anatomy of chalicotheres.
In the second image, the text says "Step 3, start sketching your new design. Just draw a lot. Make transition sketches. Pay attention to key details. Make notes! Analyze your work." The sketches here show transitionary drawings of the chalicothere skull being made humanoid, and a whole pile of sketches to test out the anatomy and proportions of a humanoid chalicothere elf. Notes on the sketches point out things I want to alter to improve the design, and ask questions about things like how to make the three-fingered hands work and whether I want to use horizontal or round pupils.
The third image shows low opacity images of people posing for art reference. Two photos of a man using a bow and arrow, and one photo of a woman standing with her hands on her hips. The text says "Step 4, study some poses." Over the faded photos, bright sketches show simplified traced shapes to copy the poses. The fourth image is just the same, but now very dark sketches have been created over the top to make the same poses with the very different proportions of a chalicothere elf. The text here now says "Try to redraw with your new design. Really think about the proportions. Loose Sketches! Redo this many times. Just get a feel for the design." end description.)
(image description: Labeled "Have fun!" this final image shows a few simple digital paintings of chalicothere elves with different skin tones, hair colors, clothing, and poses. There is a masculine chalicothere elf wearing a simple cloth around his waist, arm bracers, and red face and body paint, with tan skin and dark red hair clipped short like a horse mane. In the middle, a tall feminine chalicothere elf wearing a toga walks by two small children in colorful skirts, all with lighter tan skin and long dark brown hair. Finally, there is a very dark skinned chalicothere elf with pale hair, wearing a green skirt, stretching their arms over their head like someone who has recently woken up. end description.)
I hope that all makes sense and helps people visualize better how they can use references in their own designs. It is not so much about copying things carefully as it is about studying by loose tracing and then using those studies to do more freehand work. This is a skill that takes time to improve on, and can be helped by also doing more detailed observational art such as the still lifes and figure drawings you might do in a studio art class. The more time you spend finding methods of visual study that work for you, the easier it gets to freehand things, even totally new designs like this one.
And for a decent way to do studio art without having to go to a class, find a place in your home where you can set up objects for still life drawings, and find a good site to pull up images of people for figure drawing. stock images created just for art reference are pretty good. senshi stock (i forget their new title) professional places like pose space (contains nudity), etc. I know there are some tumblr blogs made for that purpose, but i stayed up way too late on a very unexpected burst of energy and focus and now i am crashing and cannot think of their urls.. boy it sure is great having executive dysfunction am i right. anyway. have fun! i need sleep.

"Love is…" Twelve cradled their hands together. "A shared dream. Pretending together that there can be soft landings, that community can be two or three or four, and that the world can be kind, even if that means closing its eyes when you touch each other's dream."
[ID: pictured is a collage containing eight pictures in three vertical rows. the first row contains three pictures. the first picture in the first row is one half of a neon sign that says "Go up and" above half of a line that will turn into an upward angled arrow in the other half of the sign in another row. the second photo is of an overarching structure that appears to be partially underground, such as the supports for a highway, and standing near those supports on the right side is a person in silhouette. the third picture is of one half of a grey full face mask that almost looks to be made of bandages, with the eye hole outlined in gold.
the second row's first picture is an unfocused, almost surreal photo of a brown rock to the left of blue-green water. the second picture is of a small, green, oval leaf floating in darker green water.
the third row's first picture is of a brown lighthouse standing alone on a rocky beach, outlined against a pale grey sky. the second picture is of a person's upper right side, which is covered in sand and partially obscured by their long green hair. they have on a shirt or bathing suit with four thin crisscrossing red and orange straps in the center of their back, and one thin black strap on either shoulder. just visible beyond them is an out of focus sandy beach below pale blue water. the third picture in this last row is the other half of the neon sign and the accompanying arrow, which reads "never stop." END ID]

Feminism: Then vs Now
Men love to compare the quiet, socially acceptable, totally non-radical ladies of the women's liberation movement to the new age ****s and ********s of today.
Collage: top left- a woman holding a sign which reads- this is what a feminist looks like. Underneath her sign, someone has applied text which reads- that's pretty much what I expected. Second left is a picture of a crying woman with a hand over her face. The text applied reads- wants to be kitchen forced to get a real education and job. Third left is a picture of a woman with short hair, wearing a pink shirt which says dangerous. Someone has typed- yall feminists should dress up as women for Halloween because yall been tryna act like men all year. Bottom left: a picture of a sliced loaf of bread with a stick of butter, above the two symbols for male and female. The text says: Man ≠ woman. Men and women are equally valuable and both can survive on their own but neither can live to their fullest potential without the opposite sex.
Collage: top middle- Feminism before. Left picture is a black and white of a street booth with several people standing around, a sign hangs above the booth which reads- Come in and learn why women OUGHT to vote. Right picture is another black and white of a protest with someone holding up a large sign which reads- Women unite for women's liberation. Feminism now, underneath is a picture from a slut walk where women in bikinis each hold up signs which spell out s l u t. Right picture- another picture from a slut walk. Four women in dresses stand in front of a sign which reads slut. Bottom middle- an anti suffrage comic of a woman grabbing a man by his neck and forcing a kiss on him. The original photo reads- suffragette vote-getting the easiest way, but is cut off in the collage.
Collage: top right- antisuffrage comic. Women sit before a woman speaker. A sign on the wall in the background reads- husbands for old maids. Second right- a black and white drawing. On one side is a woman kissing her baby, on the other side is a woman holding a pamphlet and screaming. In the middle is a circle which reads- which do you prefer. Beneath that reads- the home or street corner for woman. Vote no on woman suffrage October 19th. Third right- a black and white drawing of a woman in the foreground dressed in grecian robes, with a suffragette in the background running behind her with a flag which says vote in one hand and a hammer in the other. The original picture shows the woman in the foreground holding up a banner which reads- no votes. Thank you. And another banner at her feet reads- the appeal of womanhood. Bottom right- a woman in a red dress has a rope tight around her waist which is also tied around a man's waist who stands behind her holding a screaming child. The text reads- held in bondage.
The fact is, men have been painting women as abhorrent, violent, manipulative, and downright ***** creatures since before feminism even began, and have viewed feminism as an affront to God and nature since its inception.
Collage: top left- color antisuffrage comic- one woman jumps on a police officer lying on the ground while another woman hits him with her umbrella. The original text reads- suffragists on the war path. Jump on him. He is only a mere man. Top right- a girl in a red dress reaches out to a startled boy in a white shirt with gray slacks. The original text reads- we've issues of our own. Leave well enough alone. Bottom left- two women kiss each other in public. The original text has been cut off in the collage but reads- girls are doing all the felows' jobs now! Bottom right- a woman in a green dress is tied to a chair, with a vice on her head. The text reads- what I would do with the suffragists. Central image- overlaying the other images has three pictures. The first image is a black and white with two women. The image reads- feminism first wave. People deserve equitable treatment. Equal rights, equal responsibility. The second image shows the radical feminism symbol of the female symbol with a fist in the circle, and a gray arrow pointing down and to the right. The image reads- feminism second wave. Class warfare, women are victims of men, "patriarchy". The third image shows a woman raising her fist with her mouth open in a scream. The image reads- feminism third wave. Men are dangerous, violent, patriarchal oppressive rapists. The bottom text reads- the theft of moral authority. Your bigotry was never their intention.
And men COUNT on historical amnesia to continue perpetuating the myth that our foremothers were polite society ladies who never did anything more than write a few mildly worded letters to our representatives and perhaps put up a few booths to gently encourage society to allow women to vote.
Men know this is not the case. They are counting on women to forget. They are erasing our history before our very eyes.
Image: a drawing of a dunking stool hanging above a river, with a bridge in the background. The text reads- for a suffragette. The dunking-stool and a nice deep pool, were our fore-fathers' plan for a scold. And could I have my way, each suffragette to-day, should "take the chair" and find the water cold.
Unfortunately, men have been quite successful in this endeavor, not least because of women who, for whatever reason/s they may have, help them.
While men continue to accuse feminism of devolving into misandry (which, coincidentally, is a term not coined until the feminist movement was created), it has been men who have devolved further and further, committing greater and greater violence against women to the point that violence against women is not simply accepted, but publicly praised and encouraged through violent pornography, punch a TERF rhetoric, and "black knight" advocacy. (And that's just in the first world.)
History is written by the Victors. It's time for all the Victorias to speak, write, share, and, perhaps most importantly, remember.
So, the next time a man says feminism has devolved into a bunch of misandrist ****/*s and ********s, bare your fangs and remind him we used to burn shit down for less.

The Foxes Calender
I’ve been working on this for over an hour ....
After there big win PSU start selling loads more merch (I have a fair few HCs about that) including calendars.
Featuring the OG foxes, each fox has their number matching to the month, all of them wearing their Foxes uniform.
Dan #1 - January
She’s there looking fierce as fuck (like always) with confetti and balloons falling all around her, funny new years eve glasses on with an exy stick in one hand and a bottle of champagne in the other.
Kevin #2 - February
Slightly grumpy looking wearing cupid wings over his jersey with a plastic bow and heart arrows instead of his exy stick with doves flying around his head.
Andrew #3 - March
Tiny lil Andrew kicking over a pot of gold, green leprechaun like hat resting sideways on his head as he holds up his middle finger looking bored with a rainbow behind him for St Patricks day.
Matt #4 - April
Matt in bunny ears with whiskers painted on his face, Ext racquet filled with chocolate Easter eggs.
(After the photoshoot those chocolate eggs go missing so does Andrew)
Aaron #5 - May
Aaron is holding light sabers instead of exy racquets and he has a stormtrooper mask pushed up on his head cause of the whole May the 4th thing
(IDK there is literally nothing important about May and I’m super sorry to Aaron cause he deserves better)
Seth #6 - June
Just a big collage of photos of Seth, candid photos from games as well as photos the others took.
Allison #7 - July
Just Allison sat chillin in a deck chair in the middle of the court, jersey tied up slightly kinda like a crop top, exy stick being used as an umbrella stand, 4th July style sunglasses and a cocktail in her hand.
Nicky #8 - August
He’s there with no tshirt, just in his shorts, armbands on his arms, unicorn rubber ring around his hips and he’s got snorkels pushed up on his forehead and flippers on his feet and the photo is taken in the middle of a big star jump.
Renee #9 - September
Renee is standing sweetly with a witch's hat on her head and a knitted Hufflepuff scarf around her neck. She’s holding a wand and pointing it at an Exy ball which looks like it’s levitating.
Neil #10 - October
He‘s stood there surrounded by pumpkins and spilled candy, about to hit a smaller pumpkin with his racquet. His uniform torn up and covered in dirt and fake blood and he’s got zombie makeup.
November
All the foxes recreate their candid team photo except they’re all wearing turkey hats. Andrew is shovelling pie into his face and Renee is munching on a turkey leg the size of her face.
December
Wymack is in the middle sat and dressed as Santa.
The twins are off to the side dressed as elves both flipping off the camera.
Nicky is stood leaning against Aaron looking spot on in a stripy red and white suit and bowtie.
Kevin’s sat on Wymacks lap dressed like a cliché 6 yr old in shorts and a knitted Christmas sweater.
The three girls are recreating the Charlie's angels pose while dressed in festive onesies.
Matt and Neil are off to the side dressed as a Christmas pudding (Matt) and a reindeer (Neil) battling each other with giant candy canes.

PHONELESS IN BERLIN
Words: Kirsty Allison
All photographs by Martyn Goodacre, except images of Danielle De Picciotto’s art, and Alexander Hacke’s studio…and the portrait of Morgan, by Kirsty.
Clouds’ shadows camouflage the sea. Sardine boats dodge the lifeboat wind farms. I jet-trash over last night’s cab, and the phone left on the back seat.
SCHONEFIELD AIRPORT
“Yes,” with an ‘of course’-face, “It has all the streets on it.” The tourist board office give me a map with the VisitBerlin travel card – 41E for 6 days, generous. I like free travel, and I like maps. Not Maps that rhyme with apps. I see the island of West Berlin – I put all the streets in my long black woollen notebook pocket.
U-BAHN/S-BAHN
Map in a glass cage – no index – I’ll take a photo – look at it when I’m moving – I can’t take a photo. My cogs shift from the cybernet dimension.
Alone. Letting go of my infatuation with being monitored, I feel an analogue glitch, a slip of fortune as I enter the low-rise city, uninterrupted with pings.
A watch. I could buy a watch – to tell the time.
I could walk rather than do the connection.
THE HORRORS / Synästhesie Festival / Volksbühne
“The people putting this festival together told me this granite floor was from Hitler’s Bunker,” says Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre and A Records, DJing in the green room, two floors of sweeping staircases up in the People’s Theatre of Mitte’s Rosa-Luxemburg Platz – once the centre of East Berlin’s GDR.
“Do you believe them?” I ask, of the 8MM Bar promoters who put the festival together. We consider the plausibility, the Nazi star, in dirty creams and blood reds.
Mark Reeder later confirms it to be from the Nazi Vice Chancellor office. And of the cenotaphs stashed beneath the KuDamm – the Nazi spikes. Close enough. Anton is a hero – DIG! the film he stars in aside spars, The Dandy Warhols – an essential on the rock n roll rites-of-passage Reading List. Between his selection of classic psychedelia: “I was born in 1967, in California, of course I’m psychedelic”, with highlights such as Fabio Viscollios 7”, he sets the record straight on all kindsa connections that zip around my references of the night – the stars that guide us, the magnets who form us.
Arrival in Neukölln
So 90s, no blue arrow locator. Without the digital psychographic veils of my screen, the meaning of wrong direction changes – I love to travel, to feel on top of the globe, wherever you walk, with only the weight of the identifiers you carry.
Natural order leads me to Stroke Order – my faux-god-sista, of the Sacred Sound Club – her haus is pink. Y3 shoes, high ceilings, dribble shower, CK mirror. She’s a costume designer for films, but has been hiding out here for a year. Making minimal techno – using autonomous sensory meridian response samples – sounds that turn us on.
Our mothers are pretend godmothers to me and her. She grew up in Vancouver. Dad is a motorcycle racer and ballet dancer in Japan.
Synästhesie Festival / Volksbühne
CAMERA take to the main stage of seated theatre hall. Brutalist fractal collage films of matrix shifting cities, juddering with intent. Projections of you watching me watching you – perhaps being shot live in the auditorium – full scope. Beaming around the physical force of a standing drummer triballing out for a 20 minute set on a bass drum, snare and cymbal. The centre-piece. Astral simulacrum to The Egg who I played with earlier this year. The standing drummer keels in sweat, throws a death white sheet over the drums as though he has beaten them dead, only to dampen their noise, and continue hitting and hitting. Keys, 2 x guitar, sitar bass, different genereration radical on sax – elf dancing.
I’m reminded of the need for parameters – the ones we invent to live inside. The significance of numbers plays on the screens – another hallucination. A replacement for seeing everything through snapshot Insagram lens. Abandoning our digital religion – is so FKK (freikörperkultur – the GDR East Berliners act of rebellion was to strip on Sundays around the lakes – to rip off the communist soaked nylons of identikit clothing*). So naked.
TANGERINE DREAM
A violinist in black – modular synth Memotron on one side – a bank of other buttons on the other side. One life. One nerve shatters and then rest follow. First they twitch, and glitch the matrix…
I catch a bit of THE PINS – all girls – superhot, riot grrrrl electronica.
THE HORRORS
Violent Lenin Uber Alles track shatters across the increased scale of the stage for this headline performance – punk anger of East Berlin, red deco chandeliers of alles Ku-damm Cabaret glory. Waiting for Faris Badwan, the singer who I first interviewed for Dazed and Confused, making a film about his illustration – and exhibition, I wonder about the symbolism of genre/sound/music/art as signs of the times – about resonance – of what we are creating and producing – of X Factor sounds as the capitalist panacea – of our art resonating our environment – or us gravitating towards it. Stroke Order making techno in Berlin.
The futurism of white noise perfection – the dystopian values, four albums in from when I first met Faris – he was maybe 23 then. Unsure if he was going to carry on at St Martins art school. By the time I interviewed him again for Vogue, he was not going back.
And here, seated in the very front row – I witness the evocation of destiny – he’s become less of the shy frontman, but someone who is commanding the respect of the universe – he violently whips the mic lead – he hails the pulses of front row screamers, bonding their necks with rubber wire – he in black PVC – guitarist in red lipstick – beautiful rockstar boys. Lyrics are lost in the Elritch reverb – Faris is crown stealing. Volatile black energy of goth industrial – contemporised by Tom Furse – and his techno pyramid synths. Ice sweat dripping Hackney vampire bassist Rhys Webb. Faris has become storming iconic balearic, striding over theatre seats, in smart city shoes. It’s cosmic goth, it is power – it is owning the depth of Poe hell to Blakean heavens. From voyeurs to submission, the audience leave satisfied.
WEDDING/NW multi-cultural reaches of the city.
Fire station studio. Danielle De Picciotto walks us across a courtyard in twilight. Pyramid of flowers, split by stairs to a below-sea-level, waiting buddha, draped with beads. Left and right basement of Californian security doors, co-joined studios, His and Hers. Drums on the male side, Alexander Hacke, Einsturzende Neubatten – poles of metal to hit. Next door: paintings of black and white folklore S+M dolls with tripped out wings, and photograph reflections. Hers. With tea. Laughter. Discussion. Love. She is love.
***
Lost – ghetto kid guides me and Stroke Order to the ambient dinner in a bar beneath a block in Wedding: soundproof triangles of three-tone pastel shaved hardwood. Clean vegetables, and a series of performances from three post-Akai-ists. Poetry, soundscapes layering paranoic schizophrenic voices – a DJ girl in from Seattle. The residents, ex-pats, from across Germany, and the world – carrying less ego than London. A wholesome intellect carries through, it gets lost in the whirl of London survival. I think back to hanging with the man commonly known as Rodent, the Sex Pistols’ sound tech – he was saying everything is lost in our digital times – the lack of ability to hang out together, they had to live frugally, himself in the studio of The Clash. The intensity of art. It’s easier here. To get involved in your creativity – away from the grab.
SUNDAY
Home jukebox, coffee, and Okay Cafe cinnamon swirls at Jason McGlade and Anne-Cathrin Saure’s (the art director/photographer, and designer of Cold Lips II, and co-createurs of the Shedville font). They moved back here recently – but Jason’s back and forth to London, working on an incredible analogue Polaroid project.
Stroke Order and I head out to Berghain – but instead collide with a very old friend who’s been living in Thailand for 14 years – Martyn Goodacre. He took the most iconic picture of Kurt Cobain, and many more. We tried doing music together when we worked on magazines. We go to a bar, meet with a midwife – talk about the horror show of birth, the guidance into the world, policed by the womb and the channel to birth and the rejection from the vulvic eye. The propulsion.
MONDAY MORNING COMING DOWN FROM AN EMAIL THAT IS CHANGING MY LIFE
Space, China – coffee with Mark Reeder. His vinyl of Mauderstadt is out now. I’ve just run a trilogy of stories on him in DJ Mag, explaining his part in Berlin, from being the Factory rep in Berlin in Joy Division days, through to putting on punk gigs in East Berlin, recording the music in gay bars to play to New Order – thus Blue Monday – and since, from inventing trance music with his label MfS – getting Paul van Dyk on the map – he’s the man. “Danielle [De Picciotto] and Katia – Love Parade would never have started without them.”
[Love Parade was the street party that began in the ecstatic reunification of East and West Berlin. The wall came down in 1990. The old GDR was a wild land. Read Danielle De Picciotto’s Beauty of Transgression for more…or watch Mark Reeder’s B-Movie…and his forthcoming E-Movie.]
He realises he’s late for his lunch…
Alone, back on the Neukölln streets, I look into the door of a Moroccan cafe – get called in by a round-faced Muslim woman, grey jumper, jeans – trainers – Tangiers market vibes, enter – beans – good – no English – point at a box – I don’t know if she knows I don’t want a tagine but takeaway – they waterfall me mint tea – the door slams shut. There are stickers on the wall tiles – plastic table cloths. Am I about to be drugged? Locked in – I have few Euros and no phone to be stolen.
I sit, read the Unspoken Berlin I’ve picked up – and wait for either the drugs to kick in, or to relax. Oh, some brot on the table – no it ain’t Gucci Bloom sea hedgehog fennel and jerusalem artichoke, chestnut puree and scallop, purple watercress like the exquisite experience of Lokal where local ingredients will dance on plates for us later – nor is is it as refined as the Techno sauna we’ll meditate in around the bar – but it is E2.50 and beautifully wholesome – the chickpeas are larger than London.

Neurotitan have taken Cold Lips and my last 3 copies of Unedited. Stefi there is lovely. It’s somewhere that’s always called me on previous trips to Berlin. Many putting a film together that became impossible, about Manuel Gottching, of Ash Ra Tempel – and E2:E4 – the most sampled record – inventor of ambient – before Eno, before the HANSA recordings of Iggy and Bowie. I tell Stefi of my gig last night with Whisky and Words at the Keith bar – where Stroke Order – her pals – and Jason McGlade come by – and Mark Reeder. And Rasp Thorne [post coming to Cold Lips soon, or buy the second edition for total spread]- the consumate performer – lighter over here – my lips are still red from the wine. Stephen Crane. Rasp’s performance of Crane. He’s so good.
Everytime I get on a train here the stasi black jacket ticket checkers are on the same carriage. It’s happened to Morgan 3 times in her year here – and 3 times with me in as many days. I am able to fight my usual paranoias from the top of my Maslow pyramid – the email from a publisher – saying he wants to publish my novel – the one I have had two agents hawk around in 11 years – during which time, I have changed, and so has the story. It is the best email I’ve ever had. Here, lying in bed on the Monday morning after meeting with Anton Newcombe and front row for Faris – Faris frow. Two days later, I’m still flying, as I hit EchoBucher, back in Wedding – they’re taking some Cold Lips…I drop into Potsdamer – meeting… No fucking way. Ticket checkers.
Zug Fallt aus!
You have amazing eyes – you look like Madonna said the guy from Milano – I’m hoping he means old skool hot Madz. En route to the airport – delays – nerves shot / triggering towards Parkinsons and spiked dreams. He calmed me – so did the guy who was also travelling to Stansted – as we ran for the plane, and vice versa. Detoxed from the phone, train home, to the temple – travelling with Alice A Bailey. Nanobotic karmic overide. More ticket inspectors – haunted by the stasi – on plane now – could do with some extra O2 from the overhead locker after running in a coat I just bought which I think I may be allergic to. But it’s so warm.
*German born LA-resident, Benedikt Taschen, the art collector and publisher, has directed the content of the new EAST GERMAN HANDBOOK. An encyclopedic collab with Wende Museum, a place of Cold War artefacts in Culver City. It’s a compendium of communist porn – picture-led, masonically-charged graphics of the whole nine yards of life behind the wall – from ideal weaponary to food, fags, appalling vodka, and the requisite communist shit shoes. It’s got 50s utopian vision written all over it.

Once Upon a Snowing
AN: A Guest asked for a one-shot of Emma spending the day with just Henry and baby Neal. So here you go! Hope I do it justice for you. This is post 6x17 and we'll pretend at the moment there's no imminent threats in town. Please consider leaving a review. Feedback is always much appreciated. Have a prompt? PM me or leave it in a review!
Once Upon a Snowing
Prized Possession
Emma smiled in amusement, as she watched her mother fuss over her baby brother. Her father was looking on with much the same look as she was wearing. "There should be plenty of bottles in the fridge," Snow said, as she kissed Neal's little head. She had convinced her parents to not only go on a date night, but have an overnight at Granny's to spend some time alone together. They both instantly loved the idea, but her mother still had trouble letting go of Neal sometimes. When he was first born, Emma remembered feeling a tad bit of envy for her baby brother, but seeing her parents dote on her baby brother only made her smile now. It would probably always make her a little sad too, but mostly happy since she knew this was how they would have been with her too. "And if you run out of diapers, there's a new package on the top shelf in the linen closet," Snow continued. "Mom...we'll be fine," Emma soothed and Snow smiled, relaxing a little and David put his arms around her. "I know...we should go. Just call if you need anything," Snow said. Emma nodded. "I will, but we'll be fine. You two need some alone time after that stupid sleeping curse, so go and be your gooey romantic selves and tell me none of the details," Emma said. David chuckled, as they were ushered out the door. "You still have an aversion to tacos?" he teased. "Haven't eaten one since. Goodbye Dad," she replied, as she closed the door on him. "Well my darling, shall we?" he asked, offering his arm. She hooked her hand on his elbow. "Lead the way, Charming," she replied, as they descended down the stairs.
~*~
"All right, baby bro. Time to have some fun," Emma said, as she held him and he patted her face with his little hand. "What do you have in mind?" Henry asked. "Did you bring the stuff I asked you to get?" Emma asked in return. Henry grinned and hurried upstairs, returning moments later with a large poster board and a kit of acrylic paints and brushes. "What are we going to do with this stuff?" Henry asked. Emma smirked at him and pointed to the fridge where a drawing Henry had done shortly after the curse had broken still hung with magnets. "I drew that like three years ago. I can't believe Grams and Gramps still have it," Henry said, slightly embarrassed by the childish drawing of his family members, but not the words he had written on it, her parents fairy tale names with Grams and Gramps written below each. And then a drawing of Emma and Henry next to them. And in the largest letters below everyone was the word Family.
At the time, this word hadn't really had much meaning for Emma. She had a family, but it hadn't truly sunken in yet. She remembered that Henry had been a bit disappointed that she had been so standoffish with her parents at first. She came to realize later that giving her up was the last thing they wanted to do. It didn't change the fact that she was alone for twenty-eight years, but it wasn't their fault. "Of course they still have it. Your Grams was just doting over it the other day, in fact. It's one of their most prized possessions so that gave me this idea," Emma said, as she laid the poster board out and set Neal beside her.
"Mom and Dad are going to have lots of pictures drawn by this little guy when he gets a bit older and if I know them, that fridge is going to be absolutely plastered with every bit of paper this one touches," Emma said.
"But they don't have anything I drew when I was little...hell, I don't even have anything. None of the foster families cared enough to keep anything I made, so it all go tossed or left behind," she said, a touch sadly. "So...we're going to all three draw something for them so they have something from both their kids and their grand kid?" Henry asked, catching on. She smiled. Smart as a whip, as usual. "That's the idea, kid," she replied. "You're gonna make Grams cry, you know that, right?" he warned. She smiled. "Probably your Gramps too," she added, as she picked up the brush and dipped it in purple paint. Henry took his brush and dipped it in the green. "Happy painting, kid," she said.
They were quiet and Neal watched, enthralled, as they painted with bright colors. Henry used the green to draw a baby sapling. Emma used the purple decorative stars along the edges of the board. Then Henry used white for some Snow drops and Emma crafted a pretty good looking sword. Henry added some arrows to their collage with a bow and even a rock, which made them laugh. Their true love family board wouldn't be complete without several red hearts, which Henry dealt with, while Emma scrawled the word FAMILY in big bold letters in the center. They had left the perfect spot above the word for a photo, which Emma placed there after using a glue stick on the back of it. The picture was the most recent one they had taken at Granny's. Her parents in center with Neal, her and Killian on the right of them, and Regina and Henry on the left. Then finally in the space below the word family, Emma and Henry painted their hands and imprinted their hand prints on the board, leaving a space between each. Neal watched in fascination, as his sister painted his hand and helped him press it onto the board. Neal squealed in excitement and smeared a couple more hand prints on the edges of the board, but Emma and Henry only laughed. They knew Snow and David would love it even more with the imperfections. As a final touch, Emma painted each of their names in the hand prints in small letters. Once they were done, they washed the paint off Neal and themselves, before giving him a bath and putting him in his pajamas. Emma fed him a bottle, while Henry put on a movie. Neal was asleep long before it was over and she quietly put Neal in his crib. Once the movie was over, Henry helped Emma hang the poster on the wall. "Yep...they're gonna cry," Henry said. "Mission accomplished," Emma replied, as they high-fived each other. "All right kid, brush your teeth and then bed," she said, as she checked on Neal, before getting ready for bed herself. "Goodnight Mom," Henry called. "Night kid," she called back. "Hey Mom?" he said. "Yeah?" she asked. "I liked this today, you know just us and Neal. Think Grams and Gramps will let us do it again?" Henry asked. Emma smiled. "I'm positive they will. I liked it too. Goodnight Henry," she said, the loft was soon quiet and dark.
~*~
The next morning
Emma made flying noises, as she fed Neal his baby cereal. "I think we're getting more of this on your chin than in your mouth, little man," she joked. Neal squealed in delight and pounded his hands on the highchair tray. "Oh we get so excited!" she cooed, as she fed him another bite, as Henry munched on his cereal. There was a knock and then Killian poked his head in. "Morning love, I come bearing gifts," Killian said, as he let himself in. "It better not be fish and grapefruit," Henry muttered. Emma tossed him a sideways glance and a smirk. She loved her pirate, but she had to agree with her son. Charming family breakfasts consisted of pancakes and bacon. And when Dad wasn't around, bear claws and pop-tarts. "You'll be happy to know, lad that there is nary a mackerel or grapefruit in this bag," he admonished, as Emma looked inside. "Bear claws..." she said giddily. Killian watched her in amusement, as she took a big bite and then picked off a tiny piece from the soft inside of the pastry, feeding it to Neal. The tiny Prince gummed the sweet confection in delight. "Thank you," she said, as she kissed his cheek. "You're welcome, love. It seems you two fared well with the wee Prince," he mentioned. "Yeah, we had fun and we made that," Emma said, pointing at their creation. "I hope you have some tissues on hand for your mother," he teased and Henry held up a box. They were already prepared and it was a good thing, because they heard giggling behind that door about that time.
"Charming...stop..." they heard Snow playfully protest and then nothing. Emma rolled her eyes, knowing that meant her parents were making out. They eventually stumbled in a few moments later, arms around each other, glowing with happiness. It made Emma's heart swell to see them still so in love. She usually complained about their frequent public displays of affection, but secretly she found it wonderful that her parents still wanted each other. She hadn't seen any examples of good relationships in her childhood so knowing that her parents were the pinnacle of true love meant a lot to her. They had helped Emma believe in love again. "Good morning," Snow greeted and then gasped, as Charming pinched her rear. She swatted him playfully, as he went to put their bags in the bedroom. "Morning Mom," Emma greeted with a hug. "Oh thank you for watching him. You were right, a night away was exactly what we needed," she gushed. Emma grinned. "I'm glad...we had fun too, didn't we buddy?" she asked her baby brother, as he cooed and reached for Snow. Emma cleaned him off and he fussed, before Snow lifted him into her arms and kissed his head. She turned and it was at that moment she noticed the poster on the wall. "What's that?" she asked curiously. "Last night's art project. We made it for you and Dad," Emma announced. Snow's mouth was ajar, as she felt David step beside her, also staring at the creation. "I know you guys don't have anything from my childhood that I made and I'm afraid I don't either...but now you have something all three of us made together," Emma said, watching her mother step closer to the painting. "Are these..." she started to say, as she touched the hand prints. "Yeah...don't worry, I gave Neal a bath after we had fun with the paint," Emma assured. "Emma...this is amazing..." Charming uttered. Snow sniffed. "Yeah, I thought you guys might like it," she said nonchalantly. "Like it?" Snow squeaked. "Oh honey...we love it," Snow cried, as she hugged her daughter tightly. David joined her and cradled Emma's head. "I'm glad," she replied, as she swiped a few of her own tears away. "We love you so much," David said. "I love you guys too," she said. "Okay...who wants pancakes?" David asked. There was a chorus of me's and David took to the kitchen to cook for his family. The next day when Emma stopped by her parents loft, she wasn't surprised to see that they had the poster put in a nice frame and displayed with pride as their most prized possession.

Professional Practice - Updating Website
Ease of website use -
Ben Stockley’s website: not easy to flick through and no information about his work on website. Can see them all on one page.
Edie Sunday:
Easy to flick through, easy to read, opening page an insight to her work, obvious ways to share her work/see if on other social media platforms.
Nadia Lee Cohen:
Instagram-esque styled website with works with style of work, easy to scroll through but without separation to different projects so have to scroll all the way through, easy access to tear sheets, press.. films on separate page in same format, easy links to other social media and email,
Todd Hido:
Representative of books and collages, lots of information about projects, easy links to portfolios/monographs/info.
My old website:
Easy to navigate but the work needs updating and editing as it doesn’t show by best work and is a little messy. Information needs updating to sound less ‘studenty’/
Updated Website:
Same cover layout but updated photo, leaves a little mystery.
Instead of leading into contents page leads straight into a project, turns light green/blue when mouse scrolls over image, title text pink when on that project. Pink arrow on right to scroll to top matching the pink title text.
Title text turns black when scrolling over a new title, easy links to social media.
Links to social media/share when photograph enlarged, easy to scroll to next page or exit photo.
Updated about page, brief exhibitions and online features.
Simple email address and phone number with photo of myself.

Project #2: Digital Collage/Montage - Exploration in Multiple Media
PROJECT STATEMENT: I created TWO IMAGES for this project:
a GIF (screen photo above). The GIF was uploaded to GIPHY.COM.
You will need to click on this LINK to play in a separate tab. The GIF plays twice. Then, back arrow to return to this post.
And, a PHOTO MONTAGE
Here is the PHOTO MONTAGE (below):
CONCEPTUAL IDEA:
I had never created a GIF:
I was motivated by the challenge.
I watched a few videos and thought I could handle it.
I was inspired by the image I created for the Ps Tutorial Assignment, which was an adaptation of Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea Which at Twenty Meters Becomes the Portrait of Abraham Lincoln - Homage to Rothko, from 1974.
I am a big fan of the surrealists and came up with the idea of a portrait that morphs into a surreal state. The portrait then exudes objects from the forehead which sum up important facets of my life.
Below: Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea...
The GIF is mixture of influences from Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte:
The GIF opens with a bright sky with loose white clouds. Magritte uses this type of sky in many of his paintings.
One example of Magritte’s blue skies: The False Mirror, 1928.
The portrait then morphs into a Dali-inspired digitized and saturated image, still recognizable as a head and shoulders.
Images then exude from the forehead area, which is also inspired from Dali.
An orange then appears in front of the portrait’s face, and this should be recognizable as inspired by Magritte, similar in fashion to the green apples he placed into portraits.
One example of Magritte’s use of green apples: Son of Man, 1964.
The GIF ends with what may be considered sloganeering, but I wanted to give the GIF a wrap up. I think the wrap up helps explain why an orange.
The photo montage is a self-portrait that leverages four of my abstract expressionist paintings:
In addition to the surrealists, I am also a huge fan of the abstract expressionists.
I am definitely influenced by Jackson Pollack, as well as many others.
I took a self-portrait photo and used the facial features and shadow as the shapes for the various cuts of my paintings.
I think you can see my profile in the “shadow” and added some shapes to give the frontal portrait some focal points.
Representative of ME:
GIF: As I said, I am a big fan of the surrealists and hoped to leverage their ideas.
I picked three items to fly out of my head: Shakespeare, an F-18 Hornet, and an artist’s palette.
I narrowed down from an endless list. These three are subjects I am super-enthused to talk about.
I am a HUGE fan, devotee – idolator, even – of the works of William Shakespeare. Everyone should read at least Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, and King Lear – tip of the iceberg.
Having been a Marine pilot for twenty-plus years, this is a huge part of my life.
I have always been a fan of serious art, but now am super-motivated as an art student.
Why an orange? Well, my initials are “OJ” and my nickname in the Marine Corps was “Juice,” or “Juiceman.”
Photo Montage:
As a huge fan of abstraction, I tried to leverage that interest into a self-portrait.
I was motivated to create this image to see if I could make a recognizable portrait with the non-representational forms.
The use of Ps was a key tool in creating the layered effect, literally.
FORMAT:
The GIF turned out to be a useful platform for putting together so many images in a cohesive manner.
I think the animation helps convey the psychological aspects of surrealism.
The photo montage capability of Ps will be very useful in creating ideas for paintings, or montages themselves.
INSPIRATION:
I have a ton of pins related to SHAKESPEARE, FIGHTER AVIATION, and ART.
These were the overarching categories, so I just used their icons as heavy hitters for representation.
I cannot over-emphasize the creative possibilities of surrealism and abstraction.
FORMAL ELEMENTS:
GIF:
The GIF opens with the recognizable PATTERN of shiny clouds in a bright blue sky.
The portrait then enters to center stage and grabs all the visual weight, but in BALANCE with the background sky.
I wanted the MOVEMENT of the figures to capture the viewer’s attention.
The Shakespeare, plane, and palette images all fall from top to bottom in a balanced symmetrical way.
The appearance of the orange is definitely EMPHATIC, as is the verbiage that follows.
The most dominant element is COLOR. The colors change from muted to saturated, with orange being the star performer and complementary blue providing support.
Photo Montage:
The photo montage leverages many of the principles and elements.
There is a symmetrical BALANCE between the portrait and shadow, but there is a deep CONTRAST between the two in color and value.
SHAPE is very important to recognizing a portrait and shadow.
The COLORS are very strong, with much variation in hue, value, and intensity. TEXTURE is noticeable in the heavy paint, brush strokes, and canvas.
I learned quite a bit in both images:
I now know that GIF is “Graphics Interchange Format.”
It was interesting to watch the instructional videos and then experiment.
Having a strong plan is important because editing midstream is very tricky.
In the photo montage, I became much more adept at using layers and masking, as well as editing.
