Yes! So the thing about Death in the Family that gets me, aside from Bruce's weird insistence that Jason's attitude issues stem from grief over his parents and not the 2-3 traumatic events that happened to him as Robin, is the issue of Bruce benching him. To Bruce's mind, the benching is temporary. He thinks, multiple times, of just how dramatic Jason is being about his being temporarily benched. But that distinction is never made clear to Jason (as far as I recall). Even ignoring how entwined the identity of Robin is with Jason's place as son/ward, there's a fundamental miscommunication that makes Jason deeply sympathetic.

I've talked about this with people 1-on-1, but DitF is sort of fascinating because (I think by accident) it presents a Bruce that is absolutely out-of-tune with Jason's actual issues. It relies on the assumption that a reader is going to approach it as "Bruce is inherently correct" and if a reader doesn't come with that lens then what's actually being shown vs. what we're being told is ... something entirely different.

RE: the panel you shared, I do think it's a little funny because isn't the context right after Jay's big Hush switcheroo and like, babygirl, what were you expecting BUT, more seriously, I think it does point to the continued throughline of Jason feeling completely severed from Bruce due to Bruce's lack of follow-through with regard to Jason's expectations. Are Jason's actions in the Hush retcon sensible? Absolutely not, but I think as a last, desperate grasping at connection it does make a kind of tragic sense.

Hot take, but I don't think Jason is as unreasonable about his not being avenged in Lost Days/UtRH as we often think. Which: I definitely think his feelings in UtRH do come from a place of anger and hurt that isn’t very rational. That said, viewed narrowly, I think a couple moments from Jason's '80s Robin run make Jason's post-resurrection conclusions about how Bruce should have acted upon his dying make a kind of sense. (Full disclosure: I did not touch pre-Crisis content).

I know this panel from Detective Comics #570 makes the rounds fairly often:

But the context is sort of interesting: the person Bruce "lost" is Catwoman and she's very much alive. The Joker just brainwashed her back to being "bad" after she had been on the straight & narrow. (Notably, brainwashed "bad" Catwoman still balks at murder and protects Bruce's secret identity under duress, so "bad" seems pretty relative here).

So Jason's holding Bruce back from murder not because The Joker killed someone he cared about, but because Selina's returned to her old ways. This is flat-out murderous revenge and no one even died.

I think, in conversation with the below panel from Batman #425, there's something to talk about:

(For context, this is the father of the rapist who Jason may or may not have killed in Batman #424, who somehow magically intuits Jason is responsible for his son's death and is seeking his own vengeance.)

I don't think this necessarily reads as Bruce exonerating José Garzonas, but that he identifies the events of the comic as coming from "a father's righteous anger" implies that Bruce believes there is some degree of right behavior on Garzonas' part. Fathers, after all, avenge their sons.

Additionally, while I think from the perspective of the living that Tim being Robin wasn't intended as a slight against Jason (at least, outside of metatextual analysis), I think it's important to note that in terms of Jason's post-crisis origin, he's Robin to Batman long before he's anything to Bruce Wayne. Cf. Batman #409:

This is two or three days after the tires incident. Adoption is not, at any point, discussed. Jason is Robin first. (Indeed, post-Crisis we don't even see Jason finding out about Bruce being Batman).

Thus: Jason's had to hold Bruce back from murder after losing someone important to him (who isn't even dead), Bruce has described José Garzonas as possessing "righteous anger," and Robin is probably inextricably tied up with his place as Bruce's son/ward.* After being resurrected, Jason wakes up and the Joker isn't dead and there's someone taking up his role, the very first thing he was to Bruce. Looking at events from Jason's (limited) perspective, I guess I kind of don't blame him for thinking Bruce would've killed the Joker, and thinking also that things, as they stand, imply a lack of care on Bruce's part.

I think there's a clear throughline of Jason's expectations from what we see in his original '80s run to Lost Days/UtRH. I also will reiterate that I'm approaching this not from what Bruce ought to have done, but rather what I think Jason might’ve expected.

* I do have one point of confusion, which is (as far as I could tell) in Jason's post-crisis iteration, there's no reference to Jason being adopted as Bruce's son (as opposed to ward) except in NTT #55, after he's dead. Bruce accuses Dick of disliking Jason because he was adopted when Dick was not, and Dick returns that he wasn't upset about the adoption, just confused. Did I miss something? Are we supposed to assume the pre-crisis adoption holds? Are the writers just doing the standard inconsistent thing?

Hi! Happy STS yeah! Sunday starts with an S too. Hmmm!!! I quite like. How there’s. No certain answers for parts of the world, actually? So like. The gods have been [killed? Imprisoned?] in stone, and nobody is sure why for centuries. Then we find out the Blight did it to them, and insists they’re dead. But at the same time, it puts significant effort into tracking the statues down and smashing them. Why do that for things that are already dead you silly little infection!!! And obviously, we have a prophet born and a hero made within the story, so the gods can’t truly be dead right now, their divinity is still being assigned!!!! So I guess. The soft world building! There are answers. But not for everything. (Mostly because the focus of the story is on the brothers, and neither of them hugely care for these answers).

Jazz Chisholm Jr. makes a spectacular catch and then spins around to throw the ball to first. His amazing athleticism and accuracy got the ball to Ben Rice and got the out. A beautiful play!! 😍 Jazz has played 16 games with the Yankees and is batting 3.17 with 7 home runs and 12 RBIs!! His OPS is over 1. I don't remember the exact number. A Prevagen moment, for sure. 🤣 Jazz is doing very well as a Yankee. It's a pleasure to watch him play. He added life to my team upon his arrival. Thank you, Jazz!! We really needed that. The great thing about my (not tiny but not insanely high) follower count, none of which are tumblr celebrity who can curse me with notes, is generally posts won't get too many more notes than I'm expecting. I'll tag my vaguely insightful fandom takes or jokes with the fandom tags and then sure they'll get notes and occasionally even dip into the hundreds or occasionally thousands of notes. But in a mid sized fandom that just released the most recent episode that's not super surprising and it also isn't a problem bc those posts don't lend themselves to ppl getting super discoursy or mad about them

But the fun thing is. Despite the fact that I do have a decent number of followers at this point, none of them care about my untagged hottakes about "thing I saw that made me mad" of the day. They all follow me for some fandom or another that I once did a good post in and I'm probably consistently disappointing them by not posting about that fandom enough

So I can still be a hater on main bc as long as I resist the urge to maintag whatever I'm ranting about, it's gonna get at most 3 likes from a couple of mutuals.

It's disappointing occasionally bc I'll be like "this is such a hot take and I am so correct you should all reblog" but then I quickly calm down and recognise the blessing of not getting anon hate
