i can’t be the only one who thinks rose’s flings with humans were partially self destructive

rebecca sugar often describes rose as self destructive. people self destruct in many ways.

i say this as a girl who’s been in relationships where i knew i was treated poorly but subconsciously believed it was what i deserved. if a good person who knew me well showed interest, i’d feel confused. i think you’re so good and i’m nothing like you type of thing.

(if you couldn’t already tell, i also deal with self hatred, though i’m a lot more self aware than i used to be)

rose saw the good in everyone but herself. she was naive, impulsive, & had a tendency to “worship” those around her, believing they were better than her. she was fascinated by humans but didn’t know the norms or labels of human relationships. she didn’t know or understand much about humans, period. i.e., letting a human baby climb a ferris wheel in greg the babysitter.

rose was initially drawn to humans out of fascination. she saw so much beauty in the most simple parts of humanity.

but people don’t always have the best intentions

i can’t help but wonder if some people took advantage, knowing that rose didn’t understand everything about human relationships. for some humans, i’m in no doubt that they found her intriguing & her powers were obviously beneficial for them, but they didn’t respect her or care to try & get to know her. i’m sure some humans weren’t horrible, but clearly her connections with all of them until the 90s were unremarkable. they’d be attracted to her for surface level reasons.

rose thought this was just how human connections worked. even though it would feel…bad sometimes, rose believed she deserved to feel that way. after all, she said herself that it was “a good thing” if people didn’t know her well.

she didn’t think she deserved genuine love from someone who truly knew her, someone who knew her past self. when a relationship felt good, she’d feel guilty, despite deeply & genuinely loving that person who cared for her.

that’s why she’s so surprised when a human treats her with decency in we need to talk. why she laughs when he says the word respect. why she says, “is this not how this works?”

she’s never had a relationship with a human that was caring & respectful. having conversations about respect & wanting to get to know a person are very simple things. this doesn’t make him “better” than any of the crystal gems—he’s just better than the other humans she knew.

as the next three years go by, rose continues to be self destructive. they don’t know about each other’s pasts & they have a shared coping mechanism: escapism. this is why sugar has said that they enable each other, which is unfortunate yet unsurprising because they cope in similar ways. she never opens up to him about her feelings surrounding past trauma, and he doesn’t either—even when some serious decisions are made. rose couldn’t stand herself & she didn’t feel deserving of love. the more people know about her, the less deserving she feels, which makes her avoidant & confusing in relationships.

nevertheless, she genuinely loves those around her, which is partly why she passes her life on to someone she believes deserves to live & be loved more than she does

as she said in nora’s tape in lion 4, i’m so excited for everyone who’s going to know you. from the very start, she believed that the best thing she could do for the people she loved was leave behind someone who deserved to be around them. someone who was worth loving.

with all of that said i hate the way the fandom talks about her character sometimes

Wolfie uhh..

Wolfie is weaker

He's thinner- his coat is flatter and he just looks.. thin. weakened.

Which makes sense- Twi is bruised and lacking his full power- so it's logical for his wolf form to show that as well

And I appreciate the detail- it is so cool how Jojo makes all of it

But it is still hard to see

The dog form shows it more prominently I guess- and emotionally. Wolfie was always slim around the hips- that's his build, he's a wolf. But he's too thin right now- a reflection of Twi's leftover bruises in hylian form

Wild learns Time is just as competitive as they are. They also get Time a special present, because everyone deserves a plushie.

Wild’s eye twitched. Then began to water. They resisted the urge to blink, desperately trying to keep their eyes open and locked on Time’s. Their leader’s gaze was steely, unflinching. He wasn’t even trying.

A tear ran down Wild’s face and Time’s lips twitched, trying not to smile. A streak of offence ran through Wild; they blinked unconsciously.

Time grinned. “I win.”

Pouting, Wild said, “It’s not a competition.”

Time’s smile remained. “Of course not. Here,” he handed them a handkerchief, and Wild dabbed at their wet eyes and cheeks.

“Thanks. I’ll win next time though!”

Time hummed in disbelief, turning away to scoop up his prize of twenty rupees. “What contest should we try next?”

“Um.” Wild shifted, avoiding his gaze. “I actually wanted to try one solo—back in a sec!” And then they darted off, leaving Time in the dust.

Rolling his eyes fondly, Time wandered over to a food stall, purchasing an apple on a stick covered in a caramel glazing. He settled down at a table, waiting for Wild to return as he enjoyed his treat.

Finally, they raced over, hands behind their back suspiciously. “Okay, so,” they said, suddenly nervous. “I wanted to… well… here.” They thrust something soft into Time’s hands and turned away, bashful.

Curiously, Time inspected the item, face softening when he realised what it was: Wild had won him a little wolf plushie, its design eerily similar to Twilight’s wolf form. “Thank you, Cub.” It deserved a place on the mantle, once he made it back home again. Malon would adore it, too. “It looks a little like our friend, doesn’t it?”

Wild chuckled, embarrassment fading. “Yeah, don’t tell Twi this, but his future-self actually aids me in my adventure in his wolf form. He’s become a sort of local cryptid here.”

Time couldn’t help it; he snorted. “Your secret is safe with me. Somehow, his fate doesn’t surprise me at all: he would do anything for you—as would I.”

Wild grinned. “I know.”

Noah kahan covered ‘fine line’ at a music festival and it’s so singer Daniel au coded!! Max was for sure standing backstage recording him like a proud husband 🥺

anon you already KNOW max is in the wings with his iphone holding it with two hands intensely looking at the screen to make sure daniel is in the middle, whilst trying not to bop around too much so the recording is stable. at this point whenever fans find out max is in attendance it becomes a spotting game to find him and guess which song he's going to record like he's a cinematographer aiming for an oscar.

he's not only doing this at concerts, he's doing this at award shows. he's at the Grammy's at his little table with his iphone filming the whole thing. the other celebs next to him are very confused but they're not gonna say anything. does he know this is televised?

when daniel asks max why he records a new song every concert his attends (in his head he's just like you are literally the one person in the world who i would sing any song to you whenever you asked), max is like well of course i listen and watch the concert videos when we are apart and i can not call you because time zones so i play the videos so i feel like you are with me :) do you want to see my album daniel? i have tagged everything from the date of the concert to where you were and what song you were singing!

(daniel goes and fall in love with him for like the three hundredth time that day.)

more than requited; a relationship

(and why this is important)

“if it’s not, then i’ve misunderstood the whole thing!” — storyboarder raven molisee, also responsible for rose’s scabbard, when asked if the relationship between pearl + rose is romantic.

pearl confessed her feelings in now we’re only falling apart. since sugar and burnett confirmed it’s not unrequited, it makes sense that they had a relationship. since they lived together up until the end, you can assume they stayed together. gem relationships ��� human relationships, but we know that romantic partners tend to physically move away from each other when they separate.

“determined to be everything that white was not, she is close with everyone, flexible in everything. love and fun are the rule, and there are no rules, and everyone is the most special.” — end of an era, page 76

you know the assumption that pearl’s love for rose was about programming, worship, power imbalances, a pearl looking up to her diamond?based on both their characters, a dynamic like this would not last as long as it did. living together throughout rose’s entire existence says a lot considering this end of an era quote. rose wanted everyone to have a different environment from homeworld. pearl lived in that environment & she was rose’s longest intimate relationship.

pearl hates being underestimated & spoken to like homeworld’s idea of a pearl, as seen in episodes like gem heist & back to the barn. she’s also constantly fighting. it’s something she’s good at, literally and figuratively. she argues. she fights her own mind, the powers of others, & homeworld itself. growth is continuous, but if she could make enough progress to stand her ground & argue with rose during the war, she would fight a dynamic on earth that reflects homeworld.

personal traumas would cause them to struggle in any relationship. a positive aspect of their relationship was that they were aware of each other's pasts, lots of secrets, pain.

pearl saw some of rose's abuse trauma among other things, exacerbating her overprotective behaviour. worrying about her potential dangers, whether she was happy. both fears are shown in sworn to the sword when she says, "you’re too important," then immediately argues, "yes, you are," after hearing, “i am not,” as if she expected that response. then (and only then) she accidentally says rose’s name. while it’s related to rose’s homeworld trauma, it’s unrelated to their their original & forced dynamic.

it’s a lot more complicated than that. it’s funny, their relationship is more complex yet warmer in this case, whereas a diamond-pearl powerful-weak dynamic on earth is less complex yet colder.

“you just said pearl fights through her issues! wouldn’t she fight through any of their issues, no matter where they came from?”

pearl wouldn’t see this as an issue at all. she would be particularly stubborn about being extra protective, believing she was justified. knowing her secret, the idea that she could poof & come back and everything would be fine but if that happened to rose, it wouldn’t be so simple. she needed time & she had to see the same situation happen from an outside perspective (connie + steven) to understand rose’s perspective.

besides, there are many beautiful aspects of this relationship. as tragic as the ending was, pearl + rose openly loved each other while they lived together. while their relationship was not perfect, they had much more love being in each other's lives than if they were apart.
