“Truthfully so?” I try to imitate the crow’s ‘fancy’ speak, pushing past the emotion I later recognized as shock.

“Yes,” the raven nodded, “I overheard somespeak about ‘reporting’ thou.”

It’s obvious the raven learned that speech from a human, judging by the mix of you and thou, and some words that I’d never heard before; yet ones that made sense, such as ‘somespeak’.

“What neighbor may that be..” I trail off, not knowing if the raven would get either hint.

“Pardon me, my lord.” The raven bows (bows??) at me. “Me name is Goldencap, from the golden shine of a cap of a bottle. The next house over to the left, I believe.”

Another raven lands in front of me, and I watch as the rest of the hoard descends on my backyard, frolicking about. Goldencap(..?) caws at the newcomer.

“Right!” The other raven seems a lot younger, I notice. “My name is Tinycap! I’m a bit younger but also smaller.”

“Well, hello, Tinycap.” I greet. “I assume you’ve also got news about the neighbors?”

“Oh, yes, my lord! A household of four, I’ve heard. They are having a ‘par-tee’ outside tonight. Shall we attempt something then?”

I ponder for a second. Would this mean I’d send a hoard of about.. two hundred ravens to kill a family of four?…

“Did any of you hear about the plans exactly?” I ask. “Goldencap, you mentioned ‘reporting’ me. But to who?”

“Oh, of course.” Goldencap replies. “I am not sure myself, lord, but I do not think it’s a conventional ‘cop’. A much bigger association, perhaps?”

“…HOA?”

“Hm? No. Some of the western raven-hunters!” Tinycap cuts in.

“Oh. Well, I can’t let my army get taken away like that, can I?” The ravens seem to hesitate. “No, I can’t.”

“Nice!” Tinycap caws before getting hit with one of Goldencap’s wings.

“Well, then.” I turn around to head back inside, aware that the two-hundred-something ravens will follow. “We’ve got a neighbor to plot against.”

You always got strange looks whenever you fed the neighborhood ravens. “I give them food, they give me company,” you’d say. One day, a raven excitedly comes up to you and whispers, “A neighbor plots against you, my lord.”

Early morning at Lyme Regis Cobb. Having got up before sunrise I managed to catch the first glimpse of sunrise right above Golden Cap. The lovely broken cloud was a bonus. 25second exposure to smooth the water and make the clouds dramatic using a 6 stop ND filter plus a 2 stop ND Grad to darken the sky.
