OLD AGE IS A GIFT.....GRANDPARENTS ARE THE LINK BETWEEN GENERATIONS

  Pope Francis one of the best! The man is pure goodness. Not all Popes have been.

Sunday July 25 is a new day of recognition officially established by him.

It is the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly. Shortened version is World Day of Grandparents.

Francis has been working to establish the Day since his inauguration in 2013.

The reason therefore in his own words: “Old age is a gift…..The Holy Spirit still stirs up thoughts and words of wisdom in the elderly today…..They remind us that old age is a gift and that grandparents are the link between generations passing on the experiences of life and faith to the young.”

World Day of Grandparents will be celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July on the Feast of Sts. Joachim and Anne, Jesus’ grandparents.

St. Peter was the rock Jesus was building the Church on. The rock is becoming somewhat fragile in its old age. The Catholic Church is no longer one solid unit. Fraught with all kinds of problems. The Church is divided in a similar fashion to the United States and authoritarian countries. Fifty/fifty. One half liberal, the other far right.

Conflicts on a daily basis.

A leader of the far right is the U.S. Conference of Bishops. Radical. Part of the gang who want to take Francis down.

The most recent issue is whether political leaders are to be denied Communion if they are pro-choice. It is a war which has in its roots the embarrassment of Biden.

The Republicans captured the evangelical right years ago. Then married certain Catholics to right wing thinking and support. The Catholics whose thinking reached beyond God, were thrilled with the recognition the evangelical tie was giving them.

Francis wrote the U.S. Conference of Bishops a month ago to cease and desist in their efforts to deny Biden Communion. Francis saw what the Bishops had become blind to: The separation of Church and State.

The Bishops backed off Biden to an extent. Instead turned their attention to lesser political figures. Like State legislators.

Two New Mexico State Senators. Both Democrats. Senators Menoz and Cervantes. Each has been denied communion for having voted pro choice.

The Communion denial in New Mexico and wherever else attempted has at its base the reversal of Roe v. Wade. Decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973.

The decision 48 yeas old. The battle still being waged. Mississippi announced this past week that it has  a case seeking the total reversal of Roe v. Wade presently on its way to the Supreme Court.

The U.S. Conference of Bishops, their supporters and those otherwise anti-Francis forget “we are all God’s children.”

Some of today’s newsworthy items.

Monica Lewinsky’s birthday today. Forty eight years old. I have always thought she was maltreated by those seeking to bring Clinton down. She has kept her head up and walked with dignity.

The Surfside building has revealed 98 bodies so far. There are several not yet discovered who may never be discovered. Ninety seven bodies have been identified so far. One still incapable of identification. The last few bodies have been difficult to identify. DNA analysis was required to identify them.

The Olympic games open today. Exciting. The world’s finest athletes competing against each other. Other than some 700 dignitaries, no spectators will be present. A move to thwart coronavirus which has become rampantly alive the past few weeks.

I thought the games should be called off in their entirety. How many of the thousands of athletes will become infected? The fact that each has trained hard for 4 years is of no consequence where some may die and infect others who may die.

Florida continues to achieve “greatness” under Governor DeSantis. Florida is the fourth state with the most coronavisus cases. Data this week indicated Florida had 20 percent all of coronavirus cases in the U.S.

DeSantis is selfishly blind, a Trump in disguise who wishes to become President.

The man is also insulting to those who are deserving of praise. He continues to mock Dr. Fauci. DeSantis is presently selling “Don’t Fauci My Florida” tee shirts.

The Delta variant is more powerful and moves faster than the initial COVID-19. I have a sense masks may be nationally required soon. DeSantis said if such was done, he’ll have the Florida legislature ban the federal mandate in Florida.

Key West is into its 40th annual Hemingway Days. All kinds of activities this weekend. The contest to decide who is this year’s Hemingway Look Alike. A street festival on Duval all day today. The race of the bulls tomorrow.

Bum Farto to gain some additional notoriety soon. A musical in the works: Bum Farto the Musical.

Key West receiving all kinds of recognition this past year. It is considered one of the top three vacation spots in the U.S. Its hotel rates the highest in the U.S. Now two top restaurants. Latitudes is #4 nationally in fine dining. Better Than Sex #11 in desserts.

HEE HAW AND HARRY TRUMAN

The simplicity of it all.

I am not computer literate. Nor mechanically inclined. A generational thing.

I had computer problems yesterday. My mouse was not working properly. Off and on. Mostly off.

I operate with a big screen attached to my lap top. Easier to see in my old age.

Telephoned computer guru Tim Reynolds this morning. He now lives in the Tampa area. Change the battery, he said. I did. It works. I did not know the mouse operated on a battery.

Oh, well.

Now to today.

Another Harry Truman story. One not well known. Like the shot of Old Grand I wrote about recently. This one involves Truman and a donkey. It also involves things that could happen to a President in Truman’s days, but would not today.

For credibility purposes, be advised that this story is one told by Truman’s grandson Clifton Truman Daniel.

Truman was on one of his Key  West trips. He liked to swim. Tried to every day. Generally in the late afternoon. Prior to his nap.

In those days, there was no natural beach near the Little White House. To accommodate the President, Navy engineers had sand trucked in. A small beach was made. A little cabana constructed, also. A place where Truman could change into his trunks.

One morning, Truman walked out with his trunks and towel over his arm. Threw open the door to the cabana and got the shock of his life. Standing in the Presidential changing room was a donkey. Adding insult to injury, the donkey was braying at Truman. A further insult. The donkey had answered the call of nature so the atmosphere in the cabana was less than pleasing.

Truman stood stunned for a few seconds, then burst out laughing. Recall he had grown up a farmer so he did not feel threatened.

The base commander was not amused. He initiated a search for those responsible. Turned out to be a couple of reporters who had gotten a little tipsy in town the night before. Came upon the donkey. Bought it. Smuggled it onto the base in the back of a taxi.

Never could happen today. Presidential security back then not as it is today. Secret Service and Navy personnel would have ascertained what the reporters were up to at the gate Most certainly before arriving at the cabana.

Truman was the President. Certain safety measures were taken. The donkey was x-rayed, given the once over by bomb sniffing dogs, and then sent to an underground holding facility in the Rockies. No one remains today who knows what happened to the donkey afterwards.

Truman’s reaction to the prank says a lot about him and Key West. They were ideally suited to each other. Unpretentious and possessed with a sense of humor.

Key West ws the one and only place grandson Clifton reported where “Grandpa could be himself, let his hair down, wear a loud Hawaiian shirt or even grow a beard (which he started but but never finished).” He had “found the perfect haven from the pressures and posturing of a hectic world.”

Tuesday Talk with Key West Lou last night. Precisely in the middle of the Democratic debate. I caught the beginning and the end. My favorite tale concerned Ernest Hemingway and Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Hemingway wrote a short story The Snows of Kilimanjaro which won him a Pulitzer Prize. Though familiar with Africa from prior visits, he had neither seen nor climbed Kilimanjaro.

His second African trip interesting though almost a disaster. It was 1952. Travel sometimes by local plane. A 4 seater or the like.

Hemingway and his wife were on such a flight. The plane crashed. Hemingway suffered some burns and cracked ribs. Never one to sit, he opted to take another plane the next day. This one exploded on take off. Hemingway hurt big time.

His wife was able to get out of the burning plane through a window. Hemingway was not. He butted his head against the door and it opened and he was out. His injuries significant, however. A fractured skull, severe burns, a dislocated shoulder, 2 cracked discs, a ruptured liver, and ruptures to both kidneys.

A tough guy. Lived to hunt, fish, and write another day.

Watched what I could of the debate last night. Better than the first. Excellent questions. Little if any gotcha moments attempted. They all looked good in varying degrees. I suspect only Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren will survive last night’s group.

Tonight the balance of the debate. Interested in how Joe Biden will come over.

On this day in 1975, Jimmy Hoffa disappeared. Never seen again. Many suspect he is buried beneath the concrete of a New Jersey highway.

Several months later, Key West Fire Chief Bum Farto disappeared. He had been convicted of narcotic dealing and was awaiting sentencing.

Farto’s disappearance a Key West “happening” to this date. A money maker for some. Tee shirts for sale bearing…..Where are you Bum Farto?

Trump will go down as the worst President in history. Unquestionably.

He does little if anything correctly.

He has us in a tariff war with China. One that never should have been. I recall his words during the campaign: “I know tariff wars!…..Tariff Wars are good!…..I win tariff wars!”

He has done a masterful job with China. As with Iran, he is in one that he does not know how to get out. The Chinese outfox him at every turn. They refuse to submit to his bullying.

U.S. representatives have been meeting in Shanghai for 2 days. Talks over. No resolution. Further talks scheduled for September.

Before the meeting had concluded, Trump announced the talks were going well, there would be an agreement. The agreement could only come if it was one Trump wanted and he was confident it would be his way.

The talks failed. Trump now says such the worst outcome for China. China should stop stalling. Claims China started the trade war.

The President is an ass. He knows not what he does. China is an equal to the U.S. in every regard. Militarily, financially, etc. China is also the U.S.’s bank. We owe China $1.3 trillion. Borrow from China on a frequent basis. Never pay back.

What happens if China really gets pissed and cuts off the loans? Even worse, suppose China starts dumping its U.S. Treasuries on the market?

An economic crisis without proportion. U. S. would go bust. Then most of the world.

A bad situation. China will not give in. Not the Asian way.

No one wins a trade war. China will go to a starvation diet and drinking water out of the streets before it succumbs. China will break the U.S.’s back as its is being broken.

A WORLD IN CHAOS.....TRUMP INSPIRED

Things are not getting better. Problems everywhere. Most Trump inspired.

Trump announced yesterday while at the G7 meeting China wanted to “make a deal.” He claimed China initiated a call twice to the U.S. trade team saying in effect…..Let’s talk.

President though he may be, I would not believe Trump if he swore on a stack of Bibles. Even if he did so while on his knees on an altar in a church.

Trump was asked if he spoke to Xi personally. He would not say.

A Chinese official denied any knowledge of the phone calls over the weekend.

Tariffs and embargoes are dangerous weapons in a supposedly peaceful world. Countries literally choke each other economically. War a probable result.

A perfect example is the time immediately before Pearl Harbor. Roosevelt was pressuring Japan ferociously. Squeezing the hell out of Japan economically.

Roosevelt wanted Japan to cease its wars of conquest. Japan was not agreeable. Roosevelt thought he had the upper hand. He went to embargoes. Tough ones.

Japan is a series of tiny islands. They have nothing of their own. Everything has to be imported.

Japan imported scrap metal big time. Seventy one percent came from the U.S. Scrap metal exports to Japan ceased like a snap of the fingers. The Panama Canal was closed to Japanese shipping. Ninety three percent of Japan’s copper came from the U.S. Stopped also.

The U.S. froze all Japanese assets within the U.S in July 1941.

On August 1, 1941, the U.S. established an embargo on oil and gasoline exports to Japan. Eighty percent of Japan’s imports came from the U.S.

The last 2 items of extreme importance to Japan if it were to survive.

The U.S. forced Japan into a war. Just as the U.S. may be with China. Roosevelt was wrong in most respects in the way he handled Japan. As Trump is today with China.

Japan gave us Pearl Harbor. What will China give us?

The storm Dorian is growing fast and moving fast. I do not blame Trump for Dorian. God like powers as concerns the weather not one of his attributes. More appropriately stated, not one claimed by him yet.

Dorian is now a tropical storm. Expected to be a hurricane by tuesday. A category 1. Expected to be over Puerto Rico wednesday night.

Or, its intensity could diminish. Meteorologists not certain yet.

The cone indicates Key West could be hit.

My concern is how Trump will treat Puerto Rico if Dorian crushes the island as Michael did. Puerto Ricans are people of color and we know Trump does not care for persons of color. His track record proves the point.

Jean Thornton, where are you? Sounds like a Bum Farto inquiry.

If Dorian is going to hit Key West and some of us decide to escape to your home in Birmingham again, how do we get in? While you and Joe are traveling Europe, we would be left out in the storm. We need to know where you hide the key to your home. Under the mat? A flower pot? Where?

The preceding of course said with tongue in cheek.

Don’t think Trump cannot be elected again! His followers adamant. They believe in him as if he were the second coming of Christ. Don’t budge.

They are blind. They cannot see what is.

I ran into 2 friends who are also adamant Trump supporters last night. Both proved my point.

What concerns me is that both are intelligent successful persons. How they made it, I don’t know. On the other hand, I may be wrong in this whole thing. I give it thought. However come up with the same thing all the time. Trump is a bad guy and is killing the U.S. and rest of the world.

Trump’s desire to help other countries in unusual situations is amazing. He is not consistent.

I refer to his opinions re wildfires.

Brazil is having a problem of inconceivable magnitude. The Amazon forest is burning. Big time. May be totally eradicated.

Note that Brazil’s new President is Trump type in every respect. Autocratic, a nationalist, etc. He and Trump birds of a feather.

Trump wants to help Brazil and has extended whatever the U.S. can do.

On January 9, 2019, California was suffering from what at the time was an uncontrollable wilderness fire. FEMA was providing emergency funding to California to assist in dealing with the fire.

Know it all Trump said he would stop the FEMA funding if California did not begin doing things properly as regards its forest lands. He claimed California’s fire handling was disgraceful. Lacked proper forest management.

What is “proper forest management?”

Finland is a “forest nation.” Trump claimed Finland spent a lot of time preventing wildfires by devoting “a lot of time raking and cleaning and doing things, and they don’t have any problems.”

Rake and clean the Amazon? Tell me how. Even the California forest lands.

I sometimes wonder where Trump comes up with these crazy ideas.

Ah, my internet problems. Last night, Sloan e mailed and said everything ok. Working properly. I wrote and told her not at my end. I could not publish yesterday’s blog. She said it had to be me. No! Definitely. I was doing everything step by step as she instructed. She may have it. John and Kevin getting it. I was not!

This morning, my first e mail was from Sloan. System screwed up again. Not working properly. Go Daddy alone’s fault. She was working with them.

I was not going to do today’s blog. I hate writing if it does not get published. Sloan says do it and lets see. Soon I will know if working from my end.

One of the reasons also that I get upset is the problem means not everything I write is getting to you. A few days ago, I wrote what I thought one of my bettr pieces. SOON…..THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE. Even the title sounds good.

I do not think any of you got it. Let me know. I will republish it when we straighten everything out.
