The fact Joel is so SO excited about and committed to the meet & greet he's arranging in CDMX is honestly giving me so much life at the moment and giving me a bazillion more reasons to adore him (not that I needed any I'm already totally on board with his entire everything) cos like:

. He's posted about it at least a zillion times in the last 2 days—this little cupcake is SO HAPPY AT THE PROSPECT OF SEEING HIS FANS IT IS SO BLOODY SWEET I CANNOT

. The way he keeps on reiterating how excited he is about this, how much he misses his fans, how he can't wait to see everyone. I mean Jesus Christ, there's no way in the world I could go, there's no way I even really get to call myself a fan compared to everyone who's adored him and supported him for the last 8 years, nothing about this is For Me™—and yet the way his excitement about getting to spend time in person with his fans again is just so pure and real and MASSIVELY contagious.... It's really making me feel so loved and appreciated by proxy. I don't deserve this happiness that I'm not even directly experiencing!!

I hope so so so much that the whole event is a massive success and everyone has the greatest night and he gets back every single ounce of the love he's giving out, multiplied to the power of a bazillion—because honestly him and his fans genuinely deserve this, it's absolutely beautiful. Do you remember that Aussie sword guy who used to talk about medieval weapons?

And, like, he seemed pretty good at talking about swords and shit. He seemed to have a good grasp of the history and tactics. He'd analyze movie weapons for their realism and that was fun. He did demonstrations with real weapons. For a time I really looked forward to his videos popping up in my feed.

He seemed like a harmless sword-fighting aficionado.

But then I guess he wanted to spread his wings. So he started down an anti-woke path. Giving questionable critiques about media and feminism. He started defending boob armor by showing historical examples even though most of those were decorative and not battle ready like in the games.

Then he admitted he was a fan of The Daily Wire.

And that was disappointing.

I missed him nerding out about swords, ya know?

Well, Shad decided to spread his wings again.

He has become...

*bad French accent* An artiste.

You see, he types words into a little box. Then a little robot does a google image search and steals a bunch of art. Then that robot reconfigures that art to be nearly indistinguishable from the source material. Well... aside from the occasional artist watermark.

Whoops!

A.I. art is very difficult. Sometimes when you type words into the box you get a woman with 5 lopsided anime tiddies. Or 20 fingers on one hand. It takes time and effort and experience to type in the perfect magic words so that you get something close to your imagination that doesn't belong in some sort of Lovecraftian horror ripoff.

For example, check out this cool "pirate hat" I asked A.I. to place on my head.

Clearly, I am not skilled enough at typing words into a box to get a proper pirate hat.

It. Is. Not. Easy.

I heard someone say you have to type things in a box for 10,000 hours before you start getting truly masterful generations.

I mean, you can't type "marathon runners" and expect that to actually work.

THIS REQUIRES SKILL, PEOPLE.

And I am a lowly amateur. I can only dream of becoming the box-typist Shad has honed himself into.

The thing is... Shad is very upset.

He is upset that you don't like his "art" and he is ready to die on this hill.

So... before he croaks on a mound of bullshit, he has something to show you. He has created something truly brilliant and when you see it, he is convinced you will validate his considerable efforts.

Leonardo:

Once he notices, Leo would carefully consider the implications that come with romantic emotions and reflect upon whether or not he's willing to go through what it entails to give himself to someone.

He would make sure this isn't just a fleeting thing before making any decisions on acting upon those feelings. Once he does, he'll drop little hints that surpass obviousness.

Don't get me wrong, it isn't that he is not brave enough to make the moves; it's just that he assumes that what he has to offer is little and prefers to give you all the signs. This way, if you want a relationship with him, you have the necessary tools to let him see that you do want to be courted.

Donatello:

Donnie's sharp enough to recognize what he's feeling the moment he discerns those exquisite tingles in his chest as something beyond just excitement. Yet, like the reserved creature that he is, digesting such emotions and coming to terms with them is… another thing entirely.

I think he would tough it out for the most part. Often bombarded by intrusive thoughts of a negative reaction on your side if you were to find out. His mind plays tricks on him, making him daydream about delightful dates with you, followed by the voice of mockery asserting that could never come to happen.

He has to be realistic. It isn't logical that someone as beautiful and brilliant as you are would risk being with a non-human creature who's not even biologically compatible with you. No, he's better off as your friend.

Raphael:

He knows what he feels for you; however, he refuses to accept it in his heart (or in front of anyone else, for that matter) because it would be too painful not to be reciprocated. Nevertheless, as his feelings for you grow, so do the desires to protect you and keep you safe and secure. This makes it difficult for him to conceal his true feelings to a sharp, tenacious eye as your own.

If he comes to confess his feelings, Raphael would strive to balance his rough exterior with moments of tenderness, as he recognizes the importance of displaying his softer side to achieve more deepening emotional connections.

Mikey

Mikey's excitement and eagerness to be around you would give him away in the blink of an eye. It's cute because he holds this "We should totally date! Haha, joking, joking... UNLESS!" attitude all the time.

I think he would express his feelings in a joyful, creative form. You can expect an outpouring of artistic expressions: drawings, poems, or spontaneous acts of affection.

I think Mike's the one with a higher rate of emotional intelligence; many lessons he's learned across his journey, and in his adult years, it's easier for him to establish his limits and boundaries. With this in mind, I think he would ponder if it's worth potentially ruining his friendship with you. If the answer is yes, he goes with everything he's got.

this is part of my pirate au, which i'm working on in the background between art and my main fic!! divider from here

everyone knows pirates were gay, and sebastian has all that bisexual man swagger

he runs a very tight ship when necessary, but is overall a relaxed leader figure

his parents died when he was 7

as a teen, anne and his uncle both fell very ill with scarlet fever, and while their uncle died, anne survived but still to this day is not fully recovered

magic doesn't technically exist, but sebastian believes in it anyway

he takes to sailing the sea when he hears rumour of a mysterious, lost magical relic that supposedly has healing powers, and he wants to find it to fully cure his sister

he became captain at only 17 after the previous captain died and left the ship to him. he'd proven himself as ambitious, strategic, and smart enough to hold his own and keep everything in order

may be a nice guy, but do not cross him, or assume you know better than him on how to run his own ship. he does not take any disrespect lightly

competent duellist, of course, and is known to take other ships for his own

although his family was always relatively poor and he never had proper schooling, he always tried to learn everything he could wherever he could

he's a top. thats that on that

he finds life on a ship, living by his own rules, incredibly freeing, and would probaby genuinely go mad living in a 'proper' town after so long at sea

the most charming man to ever live. very similar to his canon personality, he can get what he wants with a wink and a smile, and people are falling over themselves for him

I'm just gonna make this a full post because why not. As some of you may know, Project Moon has found itself in more drama. And surprise, it involves misinformation because people dont know how to read. Currently PM is in a legal battle against Monggeu, Mimi and the Game Consumer Association because Monggeu and Mimi are filing copyright on their respective works (Leviathan for Monggeu and Wonder Lab for Mimi).

I'm just gonna start with the GCS. If you've been a fan since before 4.5, you might remember the incredibly stupid Vellmori drama, where a bunch of incels hot mad at the CG artist because the ID artist drew Ishmael in a skin tight wet suit rather than a bikini. I bring this up because the GC went by a different name then, the PMUA, or the Project Moon User Association, a group with no official ties to Project Moon and who slandered the company relentlessly and wanted to bleed every penny from the company because....really just because they could. They are a group who will do anything to see Project Moon burn to the ground, and so in another brilliant idea, are backing Monggeu and Mimi in the lawsuit....except they arent because they themselves have stated that they do not have the money to do so and are asking for donations.

Getting to the copyright stuff, Monggeu and Mimi are filing copyright claims for Leviathan and Wonder Lab respectively, two comics/mangas that are set in the Project Moon universe. However they have an issue, they do not own anything within those comics. Nothing in either of them are by right theirs and are instead owned by PM in their entirety. The best they could hope for is owning the names. PM has already show proof that they worked with Monggeu when it came to Leviathan which completely destroys any claims they could make to owning Leviathan, as PM was working on it as well. Mimi......Mimi is in a weird case as her work would also technically not be hers as Wonder Lab is still set in the PM universe. But PM did take it down when she asked and also made Wonder Lab non-canon....but that just brings up the question of why even do this then? Her work is non-canon and can no longer be viewed officially so why would she even try and fight for the copyright? I dont have an awnser, I'm just asking the question.

This last segment will be used as a PSA for everyone. Please for the love of everything wait till both sides get their side of the story out and actually read what both sides say before making judgments. Regardless of your feelings and KJH (Kim Ji Hoon), that does not give you any right to not only go against everything PM says simply because you dont like the guy, and by every god, does not under any circumstances mean you get to spread misinformation. I have already seen a post showing the GCS/PMUA post about this and in that very post is misinformation. Specifically from GCS/PMUA, but since someone spread it here and others have reblogged it, they are also spreading misinformation. Vellmori WAS NOT FIRED. She left OF HER OWN ACCORD AND PM WAS FINE WITH IT. Not liking KJH because is isnt the sharpest tool in the shed does not mean you are allowed to spread any misinformation, and if you spread it unknowingly, then atleast they to correct it. And for the last gods damned time. VELLMORI LEFT OF HER OWN ACCORD, IT WAS HER OWN DECISION, PROJECT MOON DID NOT FIRE HER.

tldr: Project Moon is fully within their right to fight this false claim as these claims are coming from an outside source that does not own any of the IP and were simply contract work. And these false copyright claimers are also being backed by an organization who hates Project Moon and will do anything to see the company burn, and use misinformation to do it. Dont spread misinformation and if you do it accidentally, try to correct yourself. Misinformation is how innocent people get canceled, lose their jobs or possibly lose their lives. Dont. Spread. It.

I do wanna add something on here (so this is an edit fyi), but Project Moon isnt a perfect company. Perfect is an impossibility. Perfect cannot exist. PM has made mistakes and will keep making them, we all will. Does that mean they should be excused? Absolutely not, that's not how this works. PM isnt perfect, KJH isnt perfect, none of us are perfect, and no one can be perfect. PM has done some stupid things in the past, but they dont deserve this. They do not deserve to be continuously slandered against by a group who is out for their own gain when that same group said they were here to help people. PM is not perfect, but PMUA/GCS is far less perfect than PM could ever be. They are greedy and selfish and will continue to spread misinformation to make PM look bad. You do not need to support or even like PM, but please understand that the other side is far worse and do not care for anyone other than themselves. (This is not talking about Monggeu or Mimi, as far as I'm concerned, they are good people and nothing I'm adding here is against them. Just the PMUA/GC)

2nd edit: it has been confirmed with the official english translation that Mimi and Monggeu were both not just contract work, but effectively temporary PM employees during their contract. These means they were paid as much as any other employee. I did not mention this as I wasnt sure if this was accurate from the translations available. Along with this, according to PM, while Monggeu said it was PM's decision to cancel the manga for Leviathan, it was in fact Monggeu's choice and PM respected and accepted this. I would also like to mention that the letter from the PMUA/GCS stated that because PM didnt directly contribute to Leviathan or Wonder Lab, that PM owned nothing and only Monggeu and Mimi owned everything. One, this is false as PM has already said they worked with both during the creation of Wonder Lab and Leviathan (Wonder Lab had more freedom) and two, personally, that is incredibly insane. Just because I make a new comic in the DC or Marvel universe with some new characters does not mean I own everything in the comic.

To your anon who feels that One Direction is over and there’s nothing left of it:

Grieving for the band is a natural outcome of grieving for Liam, and I respect your feelings about it all. Might I offer that those feelings can change, for the boys, for you and others who feel like this today, and for future fans?

Here are a few examples from my lifetime. It sucked when the Beatles broke up, and while I liked some of their solo music, it wasn’t quite the same for me. Then two of them were gone, and it was awful. But the other two are still active in the industry. I’ve seen Paul McCartney twice in the last 10ish years. He’s old, but he puts on a great show, with Beatles tunes as well as Wings tunes (his post-Beatles band), and other solo work. Beatles music lives on. You know who knows a lot of Beatles music? My kids and my grandkids. Because I still play it all the time.

I recently saw the Doobie Brothers & The Eagles—both are missing original members, but their old music is still awesome and their show was amazing. And they had highly respected musicians sitting in with them (to fill out instruments & sound), and even one of their adult children. Fans loved the show, sang along to every word, shed some tears during some solos and film footage of the missing members. But the music lives on, and so does the joy.

Last example is Queen. I’ve seen them 3 times in the last 10 yrs. Adam Lambert does an excellent job with Freddie’s vocals and also with respecting & honoring him. Only two original members are left, but some of the “new” guys have been around a long time, and sometimes Roger’s son sits in on drums. They play all their hits plus new music. Shows are sold out on their worldwide tours because the music is brilliant, the shows are incredible, and fans want to be there to sing along.

Will 1D ever perform again? Not in the same way, but maybe. And the fans who love them and their music will be there. In the meantime, we have four solo artists who give us more amazing music, cover some songs from the band, and put on great shows. Enjoy what you can when you’re ready…and perhaps someday there will be more. I hope you’ll be able to be there should it happen. I hope you’ll share the 1D music we have and your love for it with the next generation. The music will live on if we want it to.

A. Capture the Flag [ The Cove's Jail ]

The retreat events weren't the kind of games Gia liked to play. Still, the vampire participated on behalf of the clan. Her loyalty to her people unassailable but questionable with everyone else. "Well I study prehistoric archeology, mostly, but a colleague of mine is a maritime archaeologist. Brilliant in his field." The brunette commended. "But bless his heart, he's a mess of a man. Steps out on his wife who gave him five children. He can't keep an assistant, either, and no one has to guess why." Head still shaking in disapproval, Gia continued on. "So this colleague, he told me that the bottom of the ocean is called the abyssal plain and isn't made of sand but sediment from everything that's ever lived in the sea. How interesting!" The exclamation was followed by an abrupt change in her tone as the eyes in the back of her head, from motherhood, told her someone was trying to escape. "Sit back down."

B. Canoeing [ During the Vampire's bracket ]

Wearing a long, flowing skirt, and kitten heels with a parasail and picnic basket in hand, Gia declined her canoe's paddle and settled into her little boat. The only thing she knew about boats was how to float down river. Which was a favorite past time of hers, growing up, as a young girl in Savannah. The middle child of a dozen and one siblings, they all loaded into oak boats with picnic lunches to bask in the southern, summertime sun. Today filled Gia with nostalgia and champagne, which she packed in lieue of her childhood's picnic lunch. She popped the bottle the second she set sail, bubbling with delight as the liquid poured over the top. "What a lovely day this will be!"

C. Bonfire [ Opening Night ]

They were all just stories at the end. Stories and bones; two of Gia's great loves. Scary stories her favorite kind, ever since childhood when she'd sneak out of bed, wander down the hall, and eavesdrop on her older siblings attempts to spook one another. In a sort of poetic irony that Georgiana amusedly appreciated, she was a ghost story. "They say I haunt the house where I died in Savannah. The story seems to change every few decades. I tripped down the stairs, my husband's misstress pushed me, an evil spirit from beyond did the deed.." A laugh, half-hearted in sound, proceeded the recount. "All are false, of course. They do have my portrait up, though the artist's rendition is hardly as damning as a photograph." Her tongue clicked in audible annoyance, as she grumbled something about stupid cell phones.

D. Werewolf BBQ

Why the clan was invited to a werewolf BBQ was beyond Gia's knowing. Once more, she joined in on the festivities like a good sport and brought baked goods for the food table. One look at the cuisine and she knew she wouldn't be eating anything she hadn't brought herself. Georgiana had a particular palette for human food these days, and it did not include anything that could be prepared on a BBQ. She resigned herself to drinking and people watching, making observations in her mind until someone was in ear shot to hear her commentary. "That guy.." SOOOOO I was kinda bored and wanted to attempt to draw myself in some of my favourite styles! Idk how close I got but Im pretty proud of how they turned out!

And imma ramble under the cut about these artists cause i love their art so much and they deserve all the attention <3

While I went through their art, I noticed a few things about their art styles. Each have their own 'focus,' intentional or not, that really makes their style...theirs! Ill mostly be talking about faces rn but i might go on to more later!

Aria: Her style focus is eyes (iris) and expressions Willows: Her style focus is hair (complex) and eye liner/shape Vaati: His style focus is Noses/face stucture and hair (simple)

What I mean by this is that when you see their art, you will notice that these 'focuses' are the most unique and tailored part of their art.

Vaati's exaggerated noses, Willows complex hair styles and Aria's expressive eyes are all so attuned to their style that it really feels like those are the most recognizable and eye catching part of their art (if we take out the amazing shading/colouring, dynamic poses and generally awesomeness.) This isnt to say that these are the only things that make their style their own, these are simply the most front facing thing that those only giving a glance will notice. But I, having looked very deeply at each style to attempt to replicate, have noticed a good many things.

LETS TALK ABOUT EARS >:D

They ALL draw elf ears SO differently! Vaati strives for diversity in shapes and size while Willow and Aria carry similar shapes throughout their art, but just point in different directions (depending on the oc) but tend to be outwards. There is also to say that because of Aria's more 'chibi' art style that hers have a more simplistic shape/anatomy but she is still able to keep them from looking plain by adding beautiful earrings!

OH AND EYEBROWS!

Arias are simple- very much so. Just being tiny, thin lines, but this is PERFECT to helps her with creating more dramatic expressions which works amazingly with her style, which wouldn't fix in at all compared to the other two styles here.

Willows are a little thicker, but are more akin to the perfect eyebrows u see in magazines and stuff. They arent as expressive compared to Aria or Vaati but she is brilliant with her way of drawing eyes + mouths to convey the wanted expression!

Vaati is able to use complex (shapes and thickness) shapes as eyebrows SO well! Most (including myself) would have issues with such shapes and keeping them looking natural, but Vaati expertly uses them, adding a dramatic flair to his expressions!

I COULD RAMBLE ON FOREVER ABOUT THESE STYLES- i really really could, but shall refrain for now!

Nervous is not the right word to describe how I’m feeling for the first live show. We’ve been rehearsing everyday and night. We’ve gotten to know each other really well in such a short amount of time and I’m so lucky to be in a group where we all actually get along. At first I think it was a little weird for them having a girl in the group, but we know that if we do well in this competition then we will have to just get used to being around the opposite sex. I just get off the phone with my dad and walk back into Harry and Liams shared room where everyone else is

“YN we’re needed to film our VT”

“Ok let me just run to my room and slap some makeup on”

“You don’ need any” Harry says. I give him a small smile

“Thank you, but I’m in a group of good looking lads, that girls will fall head over heals with. I don’t want to be the slob of the group. I’ll be 5 minutes, tops” I quickly go to my room opposite and put on a little foundation, blush and mascara, nothing crazy just enough to make me look alive. Then we all head to the room where VTs are being filmed. I sit on the floor between Zayn and Liam

“I’m Louis, I’m 18 I’m from Doncaster”

“We’ll be ok” I smile at Zayn next to me. Once our VT filming is over we’re told to go and rest up ready for our first live show tomorrow.

Nervously we stand waiting to be introduced. My hands are shaking while holding on to the microphone. I take some deep breath trying to settle my nervous stomach

“We’ve got this” Niall puts his arm around my shoulders and gives me a squeeze.

We get into positions and music starts playing. The stage is revealed in front of us and we start singing Rule The World. During the song all of us become more and more comfortable and confident, especially when seeing Simons smiling face.

“Well guys I loved what you did with the song, you made it your own. I love how YNs voice stands out, but also blends with the rest of you. Well done” Louis says smiling

“You look like you fit together. You look like the perfect band. When I heard that there was going to be a girl in a boy band I was confused” Danni laughs “but it works”

“I have to agree with Danni. You look fantastic you sound good but I can tell you just a little more time getting to know one another and get comfortable with each other, but that will come with time. I am so happy that Simon agree to have you YN because although I couldn’t see you as a solo artist, I couldn’t see you and your talent go. You fit in so well”

“We took a risk and what was so impressive is how you help each other. I know YN you’ve been very nervous today and yes you could hear that in your vocals, but you all supported one another and that’s what a band does. It was brilliant”

Thankfully we stay in the show week after week and we are so so grateful.

What advice do you have for other creators who are interested in writing Eris x OC fics?

I think my best advice is to not be afraid to write differently for Eris than what others might. The fun thing about Eris at this point in canon is we just don't KNOW what he's really like. So if you want to keep his sassy, cunt-serving persona, DO IT. But if you like to picture him a little more like someone who wears a mask and is secretly a softie who is dying for physical affection? Do it! I think I held back writing him for a long time because I was worried I was perceiving him "wrong", but at the end of the day, we're all writing for fun! Don't get caught up in worrying about having to do things a certain way.

What are your thoughts on Eris's relationship with Lucien?

Oh sweet babies. I think Eris knows all about who Lucien's Dad is and has been holding on to that for a very long time. I think Eris loves his littlest brother as much as he's able given his past and their history, and I so hope we get to see some sort of resolution and peace between the two of them before the end of the series.

You have Eris on the phone for 1 minute. What are you saying to him?

The absolute RAUNCHIEST [redacted], and also what happened with Mor in the woods, my guy? What are your thoughts on the Shadowsinger and what did that pesky male whisper in your ear?

Excerpts from an interview with Jonathan and Maria Friedman at the Los Angeles Times by Charles McNulty, with photos by Justin Jun Lee:

Hopefulness and regret are calibrated to perfection in a revival that ought to be filmed before it closes July 7. I’ve seen the New York production twice, and the psychology only deepens on subsequent viewing.

The key to making this work — which is to say making us care — is the performance of Groff, who humanizes Frank’s choices without sentimentalizing his arc. Frank can come off as a narcissist, a guy who can’t resist whatever shiny object happens to be in front of him. But Groff, who received Tony nominations for his performances in “Spring Awakening” and “Hamilton” and deserves to win for his beautifully layered work in “Merrily,” reveals what Mary and Charley see in him and don’t want to give up on: an answer to their dreams of fulfillment — romantic in Mary’s case, artistic in Charley’s.

Groff was fresh from filming HBO’s “Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known,” a reunion concert with the show’s original cast and creative team, when casting director Jim Carnahan asked him about his interest in “Merrily.” He immediately watched the London production on YouTube and was struck by an image from the opening number that matched something he had just re-created for the “Spring Awakening” doc.

“Frank walks out with a red folder, and Mary and Charley come out and stand in the exact positions that John Gallagher Jr. and Lea Michele stood in at the end of ‘Spring Awakening,’ with the girl over the left shoulder, the guy over the right,” he said, speaking from his dressing room at the Hudson Theatre. “That is the final bit of ‘Spring Awakening’ and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s so weird. I just lived that.’”

But it was one of Frank’s lines that really clinched the deal for Groff: “I’ve made only one mistake in my life. But I made it over and over and over. That was saying ‘yes’ when I meant ‘no.’” “When I heard that,” Groff said, “I went, ‘Oh, my God. I have to play this. I have done that. I’m just learning how to not do that. Yeah, I get him.’”

“I cast Jonathan for many reasons,” Friedman said. “One, because he’s absolutely brilliant. But I cast a big heart, a beating heart.”

“The amusement and bafflement of having a go at life and everyone wanting a piece of you — that is the place that Jonathan works from,” Friedman said. “Everyone wants a piece of Frank. That’s what happens with brilliant people. Jonathan is not just brilliant and beautiful but also one of the kindest men. And kindness is central to this production.”

Groff, who was exceptional in the short-lived HBO series “Looking” about a group of young gay men living in San Francisco, said that, from “a queer perspective,” he could identify with the way Frank represses parts of himself to please others.

“Growing up closeted, I became an expert at dodging questions and shining a light on other people,” he said. “This can create a relationship dynamic where you’re in a constant state of service to others — like the perfect son who’s hiding something. That stereotype feels connected to the way Frank supports everybody’s dreams, talents, neuroses and needs. He’s able to do it because he’s full of passion and genuine love for those people.”

So how exactly did Friedman, Groff & Co. finally solve the riddle of “Merrily”? By approaching it the way they might a play by Shakespeare or Chekhov, sifting through the lyrics as though they were lines in “Hamlet” and digging into the psychology of the characters as though mining subtext in “Uncle Vanya.”

This revival, fittingly, has been a team effort. And the ensemble’s collaborative joy only reinforces our sense that, however much Frank, Charley and Mary may bitterly disappoint one another, their bond will always be the best thing that ever happened to them.

Loving your breakdowns of the DBZ casts' fighting styles! While you mentioned Gohan already I'm honestly excited to see you explore Piccolo's traits as a fighter. There's a huge shift after he's reborn where he goes from hating and fearing martial arts to learning them to better defend himself from tricky moves like the mafūba, but between his unique physiology and sharp mind there's a lot to think about when it comes to our second favorite Namekian (obviously Dende is number 1. Little Green for life!).

Piccolo is the go-to Ideas man. He's often considered the "strategist" of the Dragon Ball cast, and that title is not without merit. His greatest asset is his intelligence. Though he can be prone to some boneheaded decisions and unbelievable oversights when he gets in his own head. Piccolo aptly demonstrates why every talented strategist needs talented field operatives too; He's better at making plans than executing them.

Piccolo shows up to every fight with a plan. In a sense, he's Goku's polar opposite. Goku is an adaptational genius; An ever-evolving counter-fighter who reads his opponent's moves and then tailors his approach to them. Piccolo is a schemer. He excels in the space between fights - but his ideas rarely survive contact with the enemy.

That's not his fault, mind you. It's just how it goes in a fight. Even when you can control for every other variable, you can't control for the other guy.

We first see Piccolo's knack for innovation at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. The main thing hanging over his head has been the risk of being imprisoned via the Mafuba/Evil Containment Wave again. In his past life, he had a bit of an unconventional solution to that.

Awful plan, Piccolo. Just. Just awful. Scared of being pursued by martial artists, Piccolo decided to pick a fight with every martial artist on the planet before he'd even gathered the Dragon Balls and rejuvenated himself.

This awful plan revealed him before he was ready and nearly resulted in the very thing he was so afraid of.

There but for a stroke of luck, Piccolo's revenge would have been over and done right there. Aggroing every single martial artist on the planet simultaneously was a bad plan. D-

When he shows up to the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, however, Piccolo has had three years to devise a far better counter for the threat of the Mafuba.

Piccolo's Mafuba Gaeshi or Evil Containment Wave Reflect nullifies any risk of ever being sealed this way again. Instead it imprisons his would-be captor in the vessel that had been prepared for him.

This is the kind of shit Piccolo comes up with when he's given time to plan. His fight with Goku gives us this shit. Piccolo has a new technique!

No idea how he taught himself to do that, but it's not half as weird as some of the shit Tenshinhan can pull so I'll allow it. Giant Form Piccolo is the first of many brilliant ideas Piccolo's had that will ultimately be thwarted once fists begin flying.

Because Piccolo excels in the space between fights, but Goku excels in the fight itself. Piccolo's brilliant new technique merely provides Goku with something new to adapt to and overcome.

This isn't the only cunning technique Piccolo brings to the table that Goku thwarts either. His shiny new homing ki blast suffers a similar fate.

Look at that smug grin. Goku was made for this.

When the chips are down, Goku plays him like a sucker. Because that's precisely what Goku does. In a sense, GokPu and Piccolo are perfectly suited to hard-counter each other's styles. Goku's exceptional adaptation and counter-fighting makes it difficult for Piccolo to plan against him. Whatever Piccolo comes up with, Goku will adapt to it.

But Goku's biggest weakness is his exceptional gullibility. Goku's a born sucker. He's too good-natured, innocent, and honest for his own good. While Piccolo?

Piccolo is really good at sucker punches.

Piccolo is sort of a Final Exam Boss for the martial arts crew. He combines Yamcha's aggression, Krillin's underhandedness, and Ten's weirdness into a bizarre, ruthlessly innovative assault.

As the years pass, we see him continuing to innovate and scheme. By the time Raditz arrives, Piccolo has a new new technique!

A drilling ki blast designed to concentrate immeasurable power and then penetrate through a target. Made for the express purpose of punching far above his weight class.

Uh. If he can land it. Once again, Piccolo's plan fractures upon contact with the enemy. But that's okay because this time he has Goku on his side. And, as noted, while Piccolo excels in the planning stages, Goku excels at execution.

There ya go, Piccolo, I fixed it for ya!

Piccolo's next big scheme is, of course, Gohan.

Once more, for all the work Piccolo puts into preparing Gohan to fight the Saiyans, things don't work out so well when the time comes to put his plan into action.

Despite all the effort he put into preparing Gohan physically, when push comes to shove he isn't able to coax a fighting spirit out of Gohan once they get into the field. His plan shatters on impact with Nappa.

Trying to grab Nappa's tail goes about as poorly.

And yet he is vindicated for it all the same, when the Gohan he forged becomes the key to defeating Vegeta. Once again, Piccolo's innovation is the key to victory, but he needs Goku in the field to carry the ball for him.

The Android arc brings Piccolo his greatest innovation yet, and one of my all-time favorite techniques. Goku's Warp Kamehameha is my #1 but this is fucking cool.

Piccolo has a NEW new new technique! I love this move. Turning the sky into an inescapable minefield to corner an opponent and then converging it all at once. Called Hellzone Grenade in English which is frankly a fantastic name for it.

And yet. Once again.

Yeah, apparently 17 has an impenetrable force field. That's just cheating. I mentioned before that Piccolo's schemes never survive contact with the enemy, but the Android arc is where it gets completely unfair.

Against 19 and 20, he tries to set up one of his patented KO-fakeout sucker punches only for Vegeta to show up and steal his thunder.

Every time. This poor man isn't allowed to pull off a scheme. This isn't even about his dynamic with Goku anymore; Piccolo's getting robbed by the plot.

But that is where Piccolo's career largely ends. However, much like Krillin, Piccolo's particular traits give him staying power after he's fallen behind as a fighter. Piccolo's talents have always lied in sharpening weapons moreso than in using them, so the Buu arc sees him pivot to doing exactly that: honing Goten and Trunks into a sharpened blade to unleash on Majin Buu.

Which goes about as well as every other blade he's sharpened.

Man, Piccolo is not allowed to win at anything.
