Jake And Amir
I spent way too long on this (watching every J&A video I could without putting too much effort in). When I've watched them one-off, I noticed a couple of instances of the following, so decided to see how widespread it was:
Is Amir from Jake and Amir a trans woman? No, probably not. But I still have my suspicions.
truth or dare: Amir "Time to meet some babe magnets" Jake "That's guys" Amir "Or lesbians"
Shopping: Jake "That's all the same women's sweater"
Fashion Tips: just watch this one.
Disease: Amir "and I'm not wearing women's shoes"
Video chat: Amir "like two civilised ladies"
Private Eye Part 1: "Best Supporting Actress"
Baby: I've forgotten the plot of this one
Girlfriend Pt7: Amir texting Leronuh "You made me feel like a woman again"
Trick or Treat: I might have marked this down just because of how Amir is dressed?
Powder, Fashion Blog, Boot Camp
Scrapped: Jake "You photoshopped a vagina onto yourself and you're masturbating?"
Costume, Brownie
Chugging: There's some reference to tucking?
Blood Donation: Jake "You came here in a skirt"
Reddit: "Dickless for Michael Chiklis"
Seminar: <image>
Doobs 3
March Madness 6: Amir "I'm gonna wear a gown to the final 4"
Costumes Part 2: Jake "Your crotch is bleeding"
Thanksgiving Scroll: Amir refers to themselves as queer
Breakfast Date: you're wearing a dress
Road Trip 2 (New Orleans): You have such saggy naturals
Poster Ideas: I'm not a businessman, I'm a businesswoman
Driving Lesson: queen dweeb
NY vs LA: What should us little sister friends gab about next?
Online Shopping: *queefs*
Serial: *wearing a thong*
Finale: bottom surgery
Donald Trump: "grab my pussy in joy"
Unrelatedly, gullies isn't a real world? And I've always used 'talking smack about Jeff' to mean shooting the breeze, not being rude to someone called Jeff. And a couple of quotes I'd forgotten:
"The pets are at work", "Work?", "Oh, you've never seen a rat be a chef before?", "That was a cartoon", "Yes, but a dog animated it".
"I got caught doing a 90 in a 0."
"waterboarding me with so much haterade"
The best bars:
sitting in jacuzzis // peanut butters smoothies // eating lots of movies // checking out the movies
all day, every day, every hour, gotta have a chicken nugget in my pocket gower
because you pale in comparison to Sarah
I spent last week in a hospital // What I thought was Flintstone vitamins was actually a birth control // and I shouldn't have drunk the whole botty-bottle
Just a little queasy // I should take it easy
1 2 3 4 if you're on a boat then you're paddling // horse then you're saddling // if you're on the stage then your name better be Bradlyn
Zip it, zip it good. Exhibit A.
First clue me. George clue me.
I'd consider it // because I'm considerate // now consider this // you prissy bis
I don't eat meat // I don't eat wheat // I don't eat treats // Now take a seat
Just give me my old scroll bag backpack back please
I love to yearn // I love to learn // I love to make money
That cool cat thinks he can hot dog
I'm not going to let some quack in a van hack me up in a can
I'm looking at one listing which is particularly cherry // though on the contrary // it might be an apple because it is that of my eye
Bros propose before hoes
It happened by chance // happenstance // it happens Nance
Yam plan thank you mam
You want one from a mean tween though? // meaner than you've ever seen // Well I've got one for you Mr.Bean
This is my baby, Bjorn, in a baby bjorn. Guess what day he was bjorn.
You're the only one with the capacity for such tenacity and audacity but more than anything I admire your veractiy.
To strike me like you did showed a lack of tact and you came off like a classless act and that's the facts Jack. Alright, I appreciate your attempt to mediate and alleviate hat you're done to me to date, but it's a little too little too lat.e
Chicken wings? // I love those frickin' things
Murph, Murph // It's your turf // Come down to Earth // you crazy Smurf
Washing is fine, it's drying that's trying. A clothes line? That takes time.

-Against self-diagnosis
-Endo/t*lpa (*u) systems and their supporters (if you're syscourse neutral you can stay, just know that I'm under the belief that endo systems are either not systems or they're invalidating their own trauma. If you use labels such as "neurogenic" to say you formed from trauma bc of a mental illness, that is literally trauma and makes you traumagenic)

Why do you think J K Rowling is transphobic? What did she actually done to be called like that? Do you call her this on the basis of your evidence or just because other people also does it?
This is a much more thorough breakdown of it than I am willing to go into here: https://www.glamour.com/story/a-complete-breakdown-of-the-jk-rowling-transgender-comments-controversy https://one-colorado.org/new/how-the-nyt-and-jk-rowling-influence-anti-trans-policies/
Conflating gender and sex is inaccurate and transphobic. (source)
Claiming that trans women put cis women at risk of harm is inaccurate and transphobic. Trans women, specifically trans women of color experience gender-based violence at much higher rates than cis women. (source)
Assuming that all people have body parts that fall into a biological binary is inaccurate and transphobic. (source)
Her essay had some of the biggest issues: "[Jkr does] not want to make natal girls and women less safe. When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman – and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones – then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside. That is the simple truth."
That whole 'men in women's bathroom' fear is a huge problem. She stated herself as not FULLY terfy- she was sort of ok with 'certain trans people' (quotes from me)- but she is a radical feminist who prefers to make sure natal women are safe first and is part of the fearmongering against trans people that keeps so many from being able to safely use a bathroom or changing room without horrid scrutiny coming their way.
Since then, though, she has done money-raising for many actively anti trans individuals.
So while she's not the most virulent anti-trans person around by a long-shot, and some of her stances are understandable (the concern that many gender non-conforming young women think trans is the only option for them without much other things being explored (non binary, butch lesbian etc) because sometimes that is a bit true for some) .
BUT the way she has gone about it, supports openly anti-trans people, and keeps doubling down has fed the anti-trans fire. She did this right when trans people are in massive danger thanks to the influx of bills and anti-trans legislation, anti-trans talk and anti-trans attacks.
So, she isn't like a total republican who wants the destruction of trans people- as far as terfy dialogues go she's rather mild and more in the microaggression side of things most of the time. She's living in that sort of boomer/gen x version of willfully ignorant about trans issues, but choses to speak on it with authority and spreads misinformation-- and refuses to listen to anyone. She reminds me of my gran who thinks she isn't racist- then will go into very racist sterotypes.
No one is perfect, but she has nothing but time and money at her disposal to listen to the experts on it, and has chosen to double-down on her most ignorant of talking points and spread them- when she has more resources and a more wide reaching platform than most- and it's actively hurting trans people.
Hopefully she'll change her stance, support some trans charities, and stop spreading misinformation about the 'dangers of men pretending to be trans' and her other more harmful perspectives, and stops supporting women who are promoting anti-trans agendas left and right.
Until then, I can't give her money, knowing that money could go to sources and causes I can't support.

Jane Austin didn't know she was Jane Austin / writing encouragement
Cozy fantasy/romance author Lidiya Foxglove has a youtube video called "How to write a classic bestselling novel that everyone will read in 200 years," that's very interesting and inspiring. Here are some parts that really struck me, and that I think other creators will resonate with:
…Pride and Prejudice has been one of the most enduring novels of our time. It's very impressive to me that all of Jane Austin's novels are still widely read, and I'm quite sure that Jane did not write them thinking, “I bet people are still going to be reading my books in 200 years.” And then she died without ever knowing that she was Jane Austin, which I think about constantly … She sold some books, some of them sold decently well. A few prominent people read them, which I'm sure must have pleased her very much at the time. And then she died and then over the course of ages she became Jane Austin. … The point that I want to make … is that I think it's just really important to write the books that call to you. Maybe even just the books that you need to write to make money. I think it's really important to write the books that call to you, even if they feel a little self-indulgent or silly at times. If they don't feel like they're necessarily what you're capable of, but they're what you want to write because you don't really know where a powerful theme or a character that's going to resonate with people will emerge, and you also don't know where culture is going in the future, it could be that people of the future appreciate different things than we appreciate now, and that something that's only minorly successful now is going to be huge in the future.
Perhaps you really love literary fiction and you got a bachelor in English, and you got an MFA, and you genuinely love classic literature, and you love, like, really beautiful literary prose, but the work that you're working on is like a cute little romance about lesbians running an adoption agency for baby dragons. Something in your head is like, “That is what I'm capable of. That sounds kind of silly, but it's just something that I write because it's fun.”
I'm here to give you permission to write whatever calls to you, whether it is yet another broody vampire, or a horror novel that just reminds you of books you read under the covers when you were 12. Even if you want to write a literary novel about a sad man suffering, yeah, you know, if that's what calls to you, there's always room for another one. Don't feel bad about writing something that just feels like you, and don't get too in your head about whether it is a great work or not. If you're going to devote some of your time, your one precious life, to writing, then I think the last thing we should be worrying about is whether it's important or whether it will be a classic or a bestseller, much less both, which as we've established is extremely rare.
You have no idea what will resonate with people 50 or 100 years from now and you don't know what will resonate with people now. It might be that you die not knowing that you were Jane Austin, but aren't we so glad that Jane Austin just was Jane Austin without knowing she was Jane Austin?
And the other point I want to make is if you need to write something for money, as I have done, it doesn't mean that that book won't mean something to people as well. You really have no clue how long a book will last or what kind of long term relevance or popularity it will have, or whether it will just like hit someone a certain way at a certain time in their life. There are entire categories of creations like pulp science fiction or superhero comics that were kind of treated as throwaway amusements when they first came out, and now have a much more elevated place in our culture. So it's also possible that a Court of Thorns and Roses will in fact be more popular in 50 years and that people will be getting their Sarah J Maas books graded and encased in plastic. Like, I don't know. They are also books that never become classics in a broad sense but have a small group of people who love them, or there's books that really influence someone when they came out so, they might not have been known themselves, but some other great artist would never have been what they were without that work.
I think all of these things are important and that art is just a big web and conversation and that you can drive yourself crazy trying to decide where you fit into it. So write what you love, write what you need to write to be able to keep on writing, and don't worry about tests of time or bestseller lists.
Be sure to check out the video, because she touches on so much more. And check out Lidiya's channel, The Cozy Creative!

Eddie headcanons with no basis in the show, I just think he’s like this (these are personal headcanons, if you don’t like them you can just ignore them)
He hates Fanta, no real reason, he just used to drink it all the time and now it disgusts him
Loves chili nuts and spicy things in general. I heard somewhere that if you like spicy things your more likely to like pain and bdsm sooo
We know he’s total metal head, but he secretly likes everybody wants to rule the world, he’ll never admit it though
Loves gorey horror movies and comics even if they used to give him nightmares
Completely believes in ghosts, used to find everything in the library about it and when will disappeared his singing caught onto eddies radio once and completely freaked him out
Helped Jonathan out in a fight because they shared freak status, even though they weren’t really friends
Doesn’t let people touch his hair because people used to make a game out of who could touch it without him noticing
This also made hate touch in general. Unless he trusts you fully (like Dustin) he’s not super into physical touch.
Erica is his favorite Sinclair, but don’t tell Lucas that
He loves his uncle to death and if anything happened to him he’d kill everyone in his Hawkins and then himself (j/ but he does love him to bits and trusts him with everything)
His uncle doesn’t care that he’s gay, he just wants to make sure he’s safe
Eddie originally got his bandana for a pirate costume but found out about hanky code and kept wearing it
Debated for weeks on whether he should cut his Dio tshirt for his battle vest because he loved it so much
Biting people is his love language and bit Steve the first time they made out
He likes metal because he feels like someone understands his frustration and he has community in it
One of his ears is pierced but he has so much hair you can’t see it
Robin and him talk about their crushes who both somehow still think they’re straight (Nancy and Steve are a little slow but it’s fine they’ll figure it out)
Robin and him have queers night (instead of girls night) where they watch rocky horror and other queer movies and paint their nail (eddie is horrible at it but he’s learning)
His favorite colour is pink, just because
He makes fun of Steve for liking Grease even though he likes it too
Steve dressed as Danny Zuko for a Halloween party and Eddie had to hold himself back from jumping him then and there
Huge anti-racist and will punch anyone who bullies Lucas or Erica (or any poc for that matter)
Does literally any dare you give him except for cutting his hair, once he had to wear a full face of makeup to school, he was bullied BUT he found out he looks fucking great in eyeliner
Mike has a little crush on him and grows his hair out to look like him
If he could make money from being DM it would be his job
When he cant sleep he spends all night preparing his next DnD session
He comes up with some of his weirder monsters while high, like an undead giant bat infested with a virus that gives it tentacles and sucks out your life force through said tentacles (when he was sober he decided not to use that monster, but he has used others)
Never learnt how to sew on a sewing machine (they can’t afford one), but can sew simple things, mend rips and put patch up ruined clothes
Making the hellfire shirts is kind of expensive, but he makes sure to sell some extra weed so every member can have one
He’s great at making someone feel comfortable when their nervous (like with Chrissy) and really does just want to help people
If Chrissy had survived they would have been great friends, he would have showed her Black Sabbath and she would have showed him Duran Duran.
I headcanon her as bisexual or lesbian who doesn’t know yet and came to Eddie partly because of rumors that he was gay (and the weed obviously)
He would have helped her with feeling less weird about being queer
When the party is being bullied in school he makes a giant fuss about it, being as dramatic as possible to get the attention on him instead, that’s how Mike, Lucas and Dustin first met him
He was ecstatic when he found out Will could draw and commissioned a piece of one of his DnD characters (he cried a little because will got the character just right and eddie hadn’t been able to draw him they way he wanted too)
Eddie doodles in class, has some skill in drawing but doesn’t really use it outside of that and making corroded coffins album cover (he’s thought about asking Will to help him with it)
He had a crush on Steve when he was still “king steve” (because look at him) and hated himself for it because Steve was an asshole
Steve got annoyed when he called him “king steve” so he calls him princess instead (he’s still a bit annoyed but thinks it’s funny)
Makes Steve listen to a lot of metal when they hang out, it’s not really his style but gets why Eddie likes it
Steve always woops the loudest when corroded coffin play and Eddie kisses him silly after
Absolutely loves liquorice and Steve always watches him with disgust when he eats it
Lowkey wants to bleach his hair, but cares about it too much to ruin it
Unless he’s cutting layers he’s never touching a pair of scissors to his hair
Literally just uses body wash as shampoo BUT uses a really nice conditioner he has to sell a little extra for
That battle vest is crunchy as hell and there is no way he’s ever washed it
Steve tries to wash some of the blood out before giving it back, but Eddie just thinks it’s metal as fuck. I mean Imagine have Steve Harringtons blood on your jacket (he is a little sad it bled through the Dio patch though)
Eddie tells him he looks hot in his vest so Steve buys a vest of his own (he doesn’t put patches on it but his arms look great)
He spends forever on writing a song about everything that’s happened and dedicates a whole verse to Steve and one in honor of Chrissy
He’s alive and happy and no one thinks he’s a cultist and a murderer

“In Dorothy Allison's short story "Violence Against Women Begins at Home", a group of lesbian friends gathers for a drink and they discuss a bit of community gossip: a pair of women recently broke into another woman's house and trashed it, smashing glass and dishes and destroying her art, which they deemed pornographic. They spray-painted the story's eponymous phrase on her wall. The friends debate police involvement and intragroup conflict mediation; but toward the end of the story, as they are parting ways, the problem crystallizes into a single, telling exchange:
“Look, do you think maybe we could hold a rent party for Jackie, get her some money to fix her place back up?” Paula looks impatient and starts gathering up her stuff. “Oh, I don’t think we should do that. Not while they’re still in arbitration. And anyway, we have so many important things we have to raise money for this spring--community things. “Jackie’s part of the community,” I hear myself say. “Well, of course.” Paula stands up. “We all are.” The look she gives me makes me wonder if she really believes that, but she’s gone before I can say anything else.
Queer folks fail each other too. This seems like an obvious thing to say; it is not, for example, a surprise to nonwhite queers or trans queers that intracommunity loyalty goes only so far, especially when it must confront the hegemony of the state. But even within ostensibly parallel power dynamics, the desire to save face, to present a narrative of uniform morality, can defeat every other interest. The queer community has long used the rhetoric of gender roles as a way of absolving queer women from responsibility of domestic abuse. Which is not to say that activists and academics didn’t try. When the conversation about queer domestic abuse took hold in the early 1980s, activists gave out fact sheets at conferences and festivals to dispel myths about queer abuse. (45) Scholars distributed questionnaires to get a sense of the scope of the problem. (46) Fierce debates were waged in the pages of queer periodicals.
But some lesbians tried to restrict the definition of abuse to men’s actions. Butches might abuse their femmes, but only because of their adopted masculinity. Abusers were using “male privilege.” (To borrow lesbian critic Andrea Long Chu’s phrase, they were guilty of “[smuggling patriarchy] into lesbian utopia.”) Some argued that consensual S&M was part of the problem. Women who were women did not abuse their girlfriends; proper lesbians would never do such a thing. (47) There was also the narrative that it was, simply, complicated. The burden of the pressure of straight society! Lesbians abuse each other! Many people argued that the issue needed to be handled within their own communities. Ink was spilled in the service of decentering victims, and abusers often operated with impunity. In an early lesbian domestic abuse trial, a lawyer noted the odd and unsettling detail that most of the time the jury spent behind closed doors was--contrary to what she’d been worried about--the straight jurors attempting to convince the jury’s sole lesbian member of the defendant’s guilt. When she was later questioned, the lesbian juror told the layer that she hadn’t “wanted to convict a [queer] sister,” as though the abused girlfriend was not herself a fellow queer woman.
Around and around they went, circling essential truths that no one wanted to look at directly, as if they were the sun: Women could abuse other women. Women have abused other women. And queers needed to take this seriously, because no one else would.
(45)Among the myths tackled by the Santa Cruz Women’s Self Defense Teaching Co-Op: “Myth: It’s only emotional/psychological, so it doesn’t count.” “Myth:I can handle it, unlike her last three lovers.” “Myth: Staying together and working it out is most important. “Myth: We’re in therapy, so it’ll get fixed now.”
(46)Actual questionnaire language by researcher Alice J. McKinzie: “Is your abuser present at this festival? If your abuser is at this festival, is she present while you are filling this out? If your abuser is not present while you are filling this out, is she aware that you are filling out this questionnaire? If you answered NO to the question above... do you plan to tell her later? (47)This No True Scotsman fallacy could bend these narratives in every direction conceivable; create a kind of moving goalpost that permitted an endless warping of accountability. In a firsthand account of her abuse in Gay Community News in 1988, a survivor wrote: “I had been around lesbians since I was a teen, and although some of them had troubled relationships, I was unaware of any battering. I attached myself to the comforting myth that lesbians didn’t batter. Much later, when I was ‘out’ enough to go to gay bars in a town that was liberal enough to tolerate them, I saw that some lesbians did indeed batter. However, i thought they all were of a type--drunks, sexist butches or apolitical lesbians--so I decided that feminist lesbians don’t batter.” Activist Ann Russo put it more succinctly in her book Taking Back Our Lives: “I had found it hard to name abuse in lesbian relationships as a political issue with structural roots.”

Ok but hc for what type of girl the pretty setter squad+yamaguchi they would date.
Thanks and have a nice day!💖🥺
yes!! i love the pretty setter squad but like i don’t have too many hcs to make this a whole thing so i feel like the following title is necessary:
Tumblr media
characters: pretty setter squad + yamaguchi
trigger warning: swearing, somewhat crack, sexual references (these are just my opinions/hcs btw - plz don’t take it too seriously)
Tumblr media
tobio kageyama
♡ i will preach this till the day i die and ik y’all are probably tired of writing all my reader inserts for kageyama x reader one-shots like this but yk what tobio wants- you know what tobio needs and deserves- the female equivalent of oikawa tōru
♡ if her favourite food ain’t milk bread and her personal motto isn’t ‘if you’re gonna hit it then it it till it breaks’ then HE DOESN’T WANT IT /j
♡ but he’d like someone who cares about their appearance, is passionate about something like he is, fairly smart, witty and kinda a heartthrob
♡ bonus points if it’s a sport that they are passionate about
♡ i feel like he’d be into just like a typical ‘girly girl’ yk?
♡ also he has a soft spot for acrylic nails- he just thinks they look so cool and if he saw yours he’d definitely call them ‘badass’
♡ he thinks they are kinda impractical for volleyball so that’s why he doesn’t get them himself (plus they are expensive as hell and he only has milk box money)
♡ so yeah he would date an oikawa kinnie
♡ overall, i think he just wants someone independent who can take care of themselves
♡ except when you can’t open the tab of your coke bc of your acrylics, then he is happy to help
Tumblr media
tadashi yamaguchi
♡ i’ve said this before and i’ll say it again; YAMAGUCHI IS A LESBIAN
♡ ok now that i’ve got your attention, let me explain what this means and what it has to do with this taste in girls
♡ he fell down the wlw pipeline- if that’s a thing
♡ like while the gang were watching sjw get rekt compilations, yamaguchi was watching hayley kiyoko music videos and lgbt short films on youtube-
♡ now imagine that scene were babey yamaguchi was getting bullied except they were teasing him bc he said his favourite song was girls like girls RGTYGJKMN
♡ anyway, till this day, he is watching cottagecore lesbian tiktoks (minecraft and irl) while others watch ben shapiro it is such a shame
♡ he doesn’t fetishize them though- it’s just his ideal lifestyle
♡ he’s developed the mind of a wlw tho so i think his thoughts are similar to mine in a way that he’s just like ‘WOMEN 😍🥰💓’ all the time 24/7
♡ so yeah this was my elongated way of saying that yamaguchi doesn’t really have type, all women are queens in his eyes
♡ but in an ideal world, his s/o would be an ally of the lgbtq+ community, if not apart of it, stan any wlw singer/band (preferably kpop), won’t yell at him 🥺 and are willing to run away with him to a cottage in the woods at any given moment
Tumblr media
kōshi sugawara
♡ his taste isn’t very specific but here are some things he looks for in partner:
♡ either likes baking or likes eating what he bakes and giving him feedback
♡ has long eyelashes/wears lashes (he thinks they are cute and ik you do too don’t even lie)
♡ oh and shiny lipgloss too
♡ very good communicator 😌
♡ a simp
♡ someone who likes gardening or is at least willing to try pick it up to help him with his herbs
♡ will do facemasks with him
♡ intelligence; he will literally bust a nut for someone who can recite newton’s third law of motion 😩
♡  and honesty ✨ (bc he needs to be told when his hair looks wack plz)
Tumblr media
kenma kuzome
♡ plz he needs a catgirl
♡ like your typical anime catgirl
♡ bushy tail, high + soft voice, big eyes, even bigger honkers, maybe a tsundere, cat ears, purs and gives good head ✨
♡...

There's this as well
 https://www.reddit.com/r/asexuality/comments/isgl7c/saw_this_in_twitter_they_said_that_these_were/
Really all you have to do is google "Marilyn Monroe asexual lesbian" and articles will pop up. It's really interesting!
Oh, this might help also  https://silo.tips/download/the-secret-life-of-marilyn-monroe-by-j-randy-taraborrelli
Annnd a bit more for anyone digging into the notes. There's Loooots of her journal entries that shows she has traits of being asexual and/or lesbian. https://twitter.com/gothspiderbitch/status/1303230368594767872
I’m gonna reply here, since it’s much easier.
I don’t know how much you’ve been interested in the life of Marilyn already but I had been obsessed with her for several years and am still very interested in her. In the time I really researched her I learnt that she’s probably the woman in history the most lies get told about. When you just google her you will unfortunately find much more lies than truths about her, simply because that has made the most money since her death. My tip if you’re interested in Marilyn: Find the fan groups and blogs and get your reading tips from there, because there are the people who do all the archiving work just out of love not because they’re trying to sell something or appear in interviews. In general, you have to look up how credible your source is, that’s essential when you want to read anything about Marilyn that gives you any idea of the real person.
That Marilyn was asexual or a lesbian is one of the many unsupported claims about her.
The facts are Marilyn had been a victim of childhood sexual abuse and that trauma lingered on the rest of her life. It is also true that she was forced to marry a 21 old man when she was 16 to avoid going back to the orphanage. Before the marriage she was afraid of the idea of having sex with him and when married they made it work in a friends with benefits type of arrangement since they weren’t married for love.
With that context you have to read what Marilyn herself had said about her youth:
“My arrival in school, with painted lips and darkened brows, started everybody buzzing. Why I was a siren, I hadn’t the faintest idea. I didn’t want to be kissed, and I didn’t dream of being seduced by a duke or a movie star. The truth was that with all my lipstick and mascara and precocious curves, I was as unresponsive as a fossil. But I seemed to affect people quite otherwise.”
“The first effect marriage had on me was to increase my lack of interest in sex…. Actually our marriage was a sort of friendship with sexual privileges.”
And then there’s this quote from Marilyn’s autobiography “My Story” (ghost-written by Ben Hecht) that people like to conveniently crop to leave out the end...:
“Sex is a baffling thing when it doesn’t happen. I used to wake up in the morning, when I was married, and wonder if the whole world was crazy, whooping about sex all the time. It was like hearing all the time that stove polish was the greatest invention on earth. Then it dawned on me that people – other women – were different from me. They could feel things I couldn’t. And when I started reading books I ran into the words ‘frigid,’ ‘rejected,’ and ‘lesbian.’ I wondered if I was all three of these things. A man who kissed me once had said it was very possible I was a lesbian because I apparently had no response to males - meaning him. I didn’t contradict him because I didn’t know what I was. There were times even when I didn’t feel human and times when all I could think of was dying. There was also the sinister fact that a well-made woman had always thrilled me to look at. Now having fallen in love, I knew what I was. It wasn’t a lesbian. The world and its excitement over sex didn’t seem crazy. In fact, it didn’t seem crazy enough.”
And Marilyn said this to W.J. Weatherby in Conversations with Marilyn (1961):
“I was remembering Monty Clift. People who aren’t fit to open the door for him sneer at his homosexuality. What do they know about it? Labels - people love putting labels on each other. Then they feel safe. People tried to make me into a lesbian. I laughed. No sex is wrong if there’s love in it.”
Marilyn was a supporter of LGBTQ rights but she was straight.
Here are a few other real quotes by her about sex:
“I’m a failure as a woman. My men expect so much of me, because of the image they’ve made of me — and that I’ve made of myself — as a sex symbol. They expect bells to ring and whistles to whistle, but my anatomy is the same as any other woman’s and I can’t live up to it. “
“Sex is part of nature. I go along with nature.”
“The formation of my lids must make them look heavy or else I’m thinking of something. Sometimes I’m thinking of men. Other times I’m thinking of some man in particular. It’s easier to look sexy when you’re thinking of some man in particular.”
So, to conclude. The Daily Mail is The Daily Mail, not a reliable source they write anything about Marilyn. The asexuality reddit quotes are real and from her autobiography but ignore context and how she said she felt later about sex once she was in love. The stuff from twitter about Marilyn and her acting coach are half true. Marilyn lived with her acting coach Natasha Lytess for a while at the beginning of her career and Lytess confessed a love for Marilyn at the beginning of their relationship but she didn’t reciprocate those feelings.
She said: “You don’t have to love me, Natasha- just as long as you work with me.” Later, on this Marilyn said, “She was in love with me and she wanted me to love her.”
Lytess couldn’t overcome her romantic feelings for Marilyn and that’s why Marilyn didn’t continue their friendship after their work relationship had ended.
I personally haven’t read “The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe” by J. Randy Taraborrelli because I’ve heard from other fans that it isn’t the strongest Marilyn biography and has a few holes and contains some inaccuracies, though overall it’s one of the better ones.
And I want to add that since I identify as on the ace spectrum those quotes about her youth also spoke to me but I personally hate it when people try to twist real people into something they weren’t especially after their death. I get the appeal it may have, especially for younger people, to read more into the things she said trying to relate to her, and they're probably not aware just how much misinformation about her is out there, but I think the truth and facts and sources should always be more important when talking about real people/history. Headcanons are reserved for fiction.

Prompts 14, 30
Have you ever been in love?
Have you ever been in love with two people at once? Or better yet, in love with two people who are also in an established relationship.
 Because I have.
I continue to you scribble my thoughts onto the blank page of my diary needing to express my thoughts and feelings somewhere, like a dirty little secret.
A loud knock at my bedroom door interrupts my train of thought as I quickly close my secrets away and scramble to hide it in my desk draw. I turn around to see blonde hair and blue eyes peeking through the gap of the door.
"Hey Y/N just letting you know movie night is starting in half an hour and I don't want another excuse as to why you can't come. You've been locked up in your room almost the entire week. We're worried." Steve asks warmly, ever the mother hen of the group.
"I'm fine Steve I've just been busy with mission reports and making sure the new shield recruits are settling in. You know how daunting it can be, especially when Sam, Clint and Bucky think it's funny to mess with them on their first week. I promise I'll come down" I reassure him, and he almost believes me.
"Okay I'll bite but just know I'm here if you wanna talk about it. I haven't mentioned it to them that I saw you sneaking out of their room last week" he says sympathetically.
That's when this whole thing started. Once I became a regular member of the Avengers initiative, it meant spending a lot of time with the team. Nat and Wanda had welcomed me with open arms being the only two regular females of the group. It started off with small subtle brushes of their fingers against my hand when they walked pass or passing things to each other in the kitchen, their fingertips just lingering a little longer. Of course, every time this would happen I would be a blundering mess but they seemed unfazed by the waves of electricity between us every time, until those subtle hints turned a little more bolder.
 Three weeks ago
Walking through the private area of the compound, I rub my tried eyes and roll my shoulders trying to ease the tension in my muscles. I shuffle towards the living room area hoping to catch up on some reading needing some peace. The open windows and the dark grey Italia corner sofa that faces it gives a lovely view of the trees and forest life that surrounds the hidden compound. In my dazed, tired state I failed to notice the fiery red head sitting lazily on the sofa a Russian novel in hand with a devilish smirk.
"Hey Y/N how was training the newbies?"
I gasp lightly and quickly turn around to face her, my hand hovering over my chest as I clutch my favourite book in the other.
"Jeez Nat, you could warn a woman!"
She laughs quietly.
"You're an avenger Myshka, your eyes should always be open to any possible thing" the words slow and clear, her voice deep laced with flirtation.
I gulp slightly, blushing at the Russian term that I’m always referred to as but never know what it means. I drop my gaze no longer able to look into those green eyes that hold such heat.
"Yeah well I've just spent the last five hours training dumbass's who can't tell the difference between a Fixation Bowie and a SoG Seal Knife, so give me a break" I grumbled, feeling slightly irritated suddenly.
Maybe because she keeps flirting with you and she has a girlfriend.
Nat frowns lightly before sitting up her legs tucked underneath her making available space on the sofa next to her, she pats the space indicating for me to sit with her. I pause for a minute debating whether that would be safe for me to do so, I scan her face and land my eyes onto her perfect full lips stained with red lipstick.
Maybe this isn't such a good idea, I could always read in my room.
But she looks so good sitting there and she smells divine.
The latter thought wins as I tentatively make my way over to her and take a seat, leaving a good gap between us. Nat smiles softly before turning back to her book, making me relax a little.
After a few minutes of us both reading in silence, I feel Nat shift slightly trying to get comfortable. Unfolding her legs from under her she slowly stretches them out over my lap and sighs content with her new position. I tense and look over to her waiting for her to say something, but her head is buried back into her book.
It's okay, you guys are friends. This is what friends do.
Nat shuffles around again before huffing, clearly not comfortable. I can feel her gaze on me from the corner of my eye.
"Myshka, can I lean against you? The corner of this sofa is killing my back and you seem far too comfy" she whines lightly, pouting those cherry red lips. My eyes instantly fall to them again before quickly looking back to her eyes, a glint of knowing lingers slightly in those pretty greens.
 She caught you.
"Oh..um yeah sure Natasha" she moves like lightening and curls up into my side, her head leaning against my shoulder, legs draped over me. My eyes widen in fear at the sudden closeness between us and the creaking sound of the floorboards by the doorway announcing another presence.
"Well don't my two favourite girls look comfortable hmm? Mind if I join?" I continue to tense up, eyes moving back and forth between the two of them trying to gauge their reaction, but Nat seems indifferent as she continues to stay close to me still emerged in her book. Wanda makes her way around the room, I'm shocked to see that instead of sitting next to Natasha she stands closely behind us, her hands rest on either side of my shoulders, her thumbs move back and forth along my exposed shoulders as she leans in and whispers "you seem tense fényem (my light), you need to relax. Is Steve giving you a hard time with the new recruits? I'll have a word" her breath softly brushing against my sensitive skin making me shiver.
I shake my head unable to find the words to speak. Wanda hums quietly before releasing her hold on me and moving towards Natasha before letting her lips meet hers in a heated kiss. I try to avert my eyes but it's too late, Nat looks straight at me and winks subtly before going back to her book as Wanda walks away asking if we would like a drink. I shake my head in decline before making up an excuse and sprinting out of there.
Whatever game their playing, I don't want any part of it...
 Or maybe I do.
 End of flashback
A week later the flirting and teasing had gotten more bolder as the days passed. I found myself being left alone with one of them or both way too often for it to be a convenience. At the end of that week, it was team bonding night in the games room, drinks were poured and before I had time to blink, I could feel soft warm skin against my lips while two pairs of red lips and hands trail along my naked back and shoulders, limbs tangled up in silk sheets.
I woke up in a haze just as the sun met the earth in the distant horizon and vanished out of their room. Leaving an empty gap between them, making my heart shatter. The knocking on my door and the empty threats to come into my room if I didn't speak to them became less and less as the week went on, as if giving up on any attempts to see me.
I'm shaken out of my thoughts by two large gentle hands cupping my shoulders; Steve stares at me with concern.
"Come on let's just go down and get the food ready for the movie, okay? You can sit with me if you like, you don't have to talk to them" I nod my head in agreement to his proposition.
"Is there any specific snacks you would like?"
I smirk at that slightly before replying:
"Do we have the big bag of Doritos, Dorito?" Steve rolls his eyes and groans in annoyance.
"Can you and Tony stop it with the Dorito thing? it was one commercial and the money went to a good cause" he moans grumpily before leaving the room and heading back towards the kitchen for the movie night snacks.
I chuckle softly before gathering my thoughts.
Maybe I could make another excuse up for not going.
Knowing I don’t stand a chance against a stubborn Super Soldier I make my way out off my safe space and into the unknown.
Upon arriving in the dimly lit room I scan for a vacant double seat to settle into for the evening, my eyes fall upon the very two people who have been taken over my thoughts and the pages in my diary for last two months; Natasha Romanoff and Wanda Maximoff.
Wanda sits comfortably on Natasha's lap her head tilted upward as Nat whispers softly to her while brushing her thumb over Wanda's bare calf making her giggle quietly.
My thoughts overtake me as I think about her thumb brushing against my bare thigh while Wanda whispers sweet nothings into my ear, just like that night...
As if sensing my presence, they both turn and face me, a soft smile playing on both of their lips.
"Hey kotenok, where have you been all week? We've missed you" Nat speaks quietly laced with worry. Wanda's furrowed brow also indicating her agreement.
I blush slightly and clear my dry throat suddenly aware of my daydreaming.
"Sorry...I.. um I had a few mission reports that needed finishing and didn't realise the time. I could do without Steve chewing my ass about neglecting my responsibilities outside of missions" I say impersonating my best Steve Rogers voice, which causing Nat to smirk slightly; amusement in her eyes while Wanda giggles her eyes looking over my shoulder.
"You know Y/N if you actually did do the reports on time, I wouldn't have to keep lecturing you" a deep authority voice says behind me while dangling a bag of Doritos in front of my face. I roll my eyes in good nature before grabbing the offered snack and moving to sit in the empty loveseat by the two women.
"You know there is space on this love machi- I mean love-seat Y/N, all you gotta do is ask" Sam teases a few rows down and winking cheekily, a pillow hits him around the back of the head by Bucky who's sat beside him.
"Please she's way out of your league, fake bird" they both continue to bicker back and forth as I settle onto my own love-seat, wrapping the blanket around me and sighing at the warm feeling surrounding me as I sink into it further.
"Sam's right though Y/N, you don't have to sit by yourself. Come sit with me and Nat there's plenty of room here" Wanda whispers leaning over towards me so no one else can hear, her eyes filled with attentiveness. I gulp and avert my eyes away from her emerald gaze as I pull slightly at the blanket as if trying to form a protective barrier around myself, away from her gaze and the heat behind them.
"Oh um I'm okay I'll stay here. Thank you though" I stutter over my words while trying to build up enough courage to look into her eyes, to show her I'm not affected by the idea of being so close to them both.
"Oh okay.. well if you do get a bit lonely over here, just know the offer is there Myshka" her eyes filled with slight disappointment but doesn't push the offer further and settles back into Natasha. I feel Nat's heated gaze upon me as I try and stay focused on the starting credits of Clint's choice of film.
Halfway through the movie, I can feel my eyelids growing heavy and my vision blurring. Unable to fight the dreamworld any longer I slowly let myself fall into a deep slumber.
"She's so cute when she sleeps, so peaceful"
"Can you imagine how good she would be for us Wanda, how amazing all three of us could be?"
"Nat! This isn't the time; you know the last time we did that with her she pushed us away. Why won't she just talk to us? If she had just stuck around long enou-"
The voices in the room suddenly stop as I feel myself awakening from my deep slumber, I tense slightly suddenly aware that I'm not alone in the room and not in the comfort of the cinema loveseat but in a soft bed that smells just like...
"Hey sleepyhead, look who's finally decided to join the land of the living" Nat murmurs while brushing a stray piece of hair out of my face and behind my ear, I shiver slightly at her touch before scurrying into an upright position, aware that I'm currently not in my own bedroom but in theirs.
"How long was I sleeping for?"
"Only about two hours, we thought it would be best to bring you in here since we need to talk"
I gulp slightly at that.
"Um.. to talk? Could we do this another time? I'm pretty beat from all that writing and working with the recruits, I just want my bed" I try to reason with them but they both fix me with a "don't even try it" look before sitting on either side of me. Wanda grabs hold of my hand and turns my palm upward, she traces her finger around my palm and slowly lifts her eyes to look at me.
"Please Y/N, talk to us. We've been trying to see you all week, but you seem to be avoiding us and Nat doesn't take to well to being ignored" she smirks mischievously at mentioning her girlfriend, who seems to be remaining quiet throughout the exchange.
I look over towards Nat only now taking in how quiet she's been throughout this whole exchange even in the cinema room she spoke less to me than ever before. Her eyes drop down, looking at the silk sheet as her hand brushes softly against along it, her head tilted slightly as if reminiscing.
"We may have gone about it the wrong way myshka, but we care about you.. a lot actually and more than just friends. We can't stop thinking about you but avoiding us after leaving like that... if this is your attempt at pushing us away, it won't work. We...I felt it that night, the way you clung to me as I brought you close to the edge, the softness in your eyes when Wanda held you close afterwards... tell me you don't feel the same way"
I sit gaping at her, lost for words. I feel Wanda's hand squeeze mine gently, comforting me and encouraging me to respond. She leans forward and brushing my hair behind me ear before cupping my face with her hand, her thumb brushing away at the absent small tear on my cheek.
"Shhh lyubov moya, we know, or did you forget that I can read minds" she teases gently trying to ease the tension. She brings her lips to the side of my head and lets them brush gently against my temple before trailing them down to my cheek, leaving small trails of soft kisses. Her lips reach near my mouth before pulling away slightly:
"If you don't want this Y/N we completely understand, just say the words and we'll leave you alone and let you move on-" before she could finish, I lean forward and capture her lips with mine.
"I want this, I've wanted this for a while" before continuing to peck her lips repeatedly. I see Nat from the corner of my eye stand quietly before moving to sit in the armchair opposite the bed watching intently as Wanda pushes me gently so I'm lying flat on my back.
She continues to straddle my waist and slowly unbuttoned my shirt before pulling it apart exposing my bare chest, the cool air hitting my breast making them harden instantly. Wanda hums in delight at the sight, her eyes darkening with a glint of red spiralling underneath her natural colour. She leans her head down towards my neck letting her nose brush lightly down the valley on my breasts barely touching my skin, her eyes lock with mine before looking over her shoulder at Nat who is now undressed from the waist down with the smallest pair of white panties on that barely cover her assets; a dark wet spot appearing indicating to her arousal, as she keeps her legs spread for us to see her hand trails slowly south towards her heat.
"Mmm someone seems to be enjoying our performance, little one. Shall we give her more?" Her hands grip my shorts before pulling them down and letting them drop to the floor before leaving wet kisses from my ankle to inner thigh, tongue swirling and nibbling softly right near my core. I shiver and arch my back basking in the overwhelming feeling of her. She continues to tease me, brushing her nose against my panties before pulling away. I hear the floorboards creak quietly making Nat's movements known, I watch her as she stalks over towards us like a predator after its prey. She squats down so she's eye level with me her fingers grip my chin, making me turn my head to the side: facing her.
"Such a pretty little thing, it would be a shame to put those luscious lips to waste, don't you agree Wanda?" She mocks, her question for the woman between my legs but her eyes stay locked with mine, darker with a glint of mischief.
She moves forward and presses her lips to mine, trailing her tongue along my bottom lip making me gasp. Her tongue battles with my own before I take a hold of her bottom lip between my teeth and tug at it making her moan deep. I shiver slightly and turn my eyes downward towards Wanda who now has my panties in between her teeth as she drags them down slowly almost agonisingly slow her eyes locking with mine. Nat's attention now on my neck sucking gently.
 "Oh god"
As soon as she's disposed of my panties her mouth is on me instantly, lapping her tongue over and over again, swirling around my folds before taking my clit into her mouth and sucking hard, making me moan out load.
"She's so wet for us Nat, god I almost forgot how good she tasted"
Nat chuckles softly before removing her panties giving me a great view of her pussy. I lick my lips in anticipation, excited at the thought of having Nat above me with my tongue inside of her. She smirks knowingly before slowly removing her tank top, showing her full breasts and climbing expertly above me so she's facing Wanda her pussy directly in view, dripping wet. I tilt my chin up trying to take a taste, but she hovers higher up away from me making me whine. I'm stopped from reaching any further by Wanda's hand grasping my breast her fingers twisting my nipple slightly as her tongue enters me, making me cry out.
My cries are quickly stop by Nat, who lowers herself enough to let me taste her. I moan at how wet she is...how wet she is for us. The room is filled with low moans and desperate cries of passion as I continue to swirl my tongue around her entrance, Wanda brings her thumb up to my clit and rubs hard circles around the sensitive area making me pull away from Nat slightly, hips bucking wanting more of her.
"Please Wanda, I need you inside me" I say desperately. She chuckles quietly before leaving my heated area and making her way up to my chest taking a nipple into her mouth and releasing it with a soft pop.
“Come on now, dear. Let’s not torture her any longer” Nat teases from above me her voice breathless.
"I got something much more pleasurable" she smiles wickedly, I watch in astonishment as her eyes turn a blood red but before I could question, I feel a strong wave of pleasure hit my core, Nat and I moaning out in unison.
"Y/N if you don't put that fucking tongue back where it belongs, I'm gonna fuck you so hard you won’t be able to walk for a week" Nat grumbles through her moans caused by Wanda's magic. I quickly tilt my chin up and plunge my tongue deep into her entrance. My hand desperately reaching for Wanda's pulling her closer. The waves of sensation hitting one after the other, faint sparks of red surrounds us. I feel Nat tense above me, bringing my hand up I gently rub at her clit, bringing her close to orgasm. She cries out before relaxing above me; I lap her up, taking every last drop of her orgasm.
"Wanda you still have too many clothes on" I whine trying to blindly remove her clothes. I feel Nat move from above me and towards Wanda while she continues to tease up and down my body.
"Y/N is right malen'kaya ved'ma (little witch), you are wearing far too many clothes" she says before gliding Wanda's long skirt and panties over her ass and dropping them in a heap on the floor, while she continues to kneel between my legs. I feel Wanda's hot breath hit my core as she gasps at the cool air hitting her warm skin. Her eyes glow a brighter red as Nat traces her finger up and down her folds before finding her entrance and quickening her pace, she leans her body over Wanda, so her lips are close to her ear as they both stare at me.
"Hasn't she been good for us Wanda? I think she deserves an award" Nat whispers voice laced with lust slightly breathless.
That familiar wave of electricity hits through my body to my core making me gasp as Wanda projects her pleasure to me. Being able to be in sync with her body and its reactions to pleasure, mixed with my own need for release, throws me over the edge as I feel the knot in my core relax making me slump against the pillow, Wanda not far behind. She collapses gently on top of me, her head resting against my chest listening to my rapid heartbeat start to slow. Nat moves around the side of the bed grabbing a throw over from the back of the armchair and covering us all up before curling into my side, kissing the top of Wanda's head and my cheek.
"Does this mean you'll consider being with us Y/N, not just the sex but everything else that comes with it" Nat asks almost tentatively, scared of what I might say.
"You guys had me the moment I laid eyes on you"

A Women’s History of City Lights: Interview with Nancy J. Peters
Tumblr media
We'll be celebrating Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s 102nd birthday on March 24, and what better way to remember his legacy AND to mark Women’s History Month, than to honor Nancy J. Peters, Lawrence’s business partner, friend, and longtime comrade at City Lights Books. While Ferlinghetti certainly deserves all of the accolades he’s received, the fact of the matter is there would literally be no City Lights without Nancy Peters. Beyond shepherding City Lights through various fiscal crises and providing the steady anchor that allowed Ferlinghetti to travel the world as a poet and activist, Nancy's vision as an editor and acumen as a publisher were a vital key to the success and longevity of City Lights Publishers.
 ***
City Lights: How did you come to know what City Lights was? How did you meet Lawrence Ferlinghetti?
Nancy Peters: In Greece in the early 1960s, I became friends with Nanos Valaoritis and Marie Wilson who were at the center of an international bohemian/surrealist community. They had a large home which was always full of traveling writers and artists whom they made welcome. The Beat writers were among their guests, and City Lights was frequently talked about as a place everyone would meet up someday. I met Philip Lamantia there and in 1965 he introduced me to Lawrence in Paris at one of Jean-Jacque Lebel’s anarcho-surrealist festivals of free expression.  Before a riotous crowd Lawrence gave a show-stopping rendition of his “Lord’s Prayer.” I was impressed by his powerful stage presence. Later that year, when Philip and I were living in Andalusia, Lawrence wrote Philip, asking for a selection of poems for a Pocket Poets Series volume. We corresponded some while we were putting the book together, but I didn’t see him again until 1971 when I moved to San Francisco.
I’d been working as an executive-trainee librarian at the Library of Congress in the fall of 1968. In April, Martin Luther King was assassinated and the impassioned protests that ensued left Washington neighborhoods in ruins. There was shockingly little assistance to residents from the government and my part of the city was under military surveillance, helicopters hovering over my apartment through the night. A Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam took place in Washington the following year. Over 750,000 people peacefully demonstrated. In a small way, I was involved in the planning and, during the protests, my apartment was crammed with fellow activists.
The Library of Congress was an amazing, fascinating place with compatible co-workers from all over the world—thousands of book people all in one place. However, the mission of the Library is to serve Congress, and the institution was a huge conservative bureaucracy serving a conservative and ineffective Congress as I saw it. I believed that if I stayed there I would have little contact with actual books or opportunities for civic activism.
So I moved to San Francisco, where Philip was living and urging me to come, and spent an enormous amount of time at City Lights while I was job hunting. It seemed like paradise, such a stimulating atmosphere where people could sit down to read, share ideas, and have conversations about books, politics, art. One day in early 1971 when I was walking down the street in North Beach, Lawrence hailed me and asked if I would like to help him with a bibliography of Allen Ginsberg’s writings.  After just a brief meeting at the publishing office, Lawrence went to Europe and his editorial assistant Jan Herman suddenly decided to move to Germany. Jan showed me how all the editorial work was done in the office, told me Lawrence “wouldn’t mind,” and so I found myself beginning an exciting new career in publishing.

What was your experience taking over as executive director and co-owner in 1984?
The store back then employed seven people: six men at the bookstore and one (me) at the publishing branch. So “executive director” is far too grand a title. City Lights was a small, failing organization by 1982. The store was not founded to make profits for the owners and it never did make a profit. Breaking even was the goal. But every year the losses mounted and there came a time when there were very few books left on the shelves. No one had seen a customer venture downstairs to the lower part of the store for many months.
At the time, Lawrence was immensely popular and in great demand as a performer and a speaker, so he was traveling much of the time, visiting foreign colleagues, living abroad, finding new writers to translate. At this low point in the store’s history Lawrence told me in a frustrated moment that if I’d like to own City Lights, he would give it to me outright if I would run the business, freeing him to do all the other things he wanted to do. I declined, but told him I would be honored to be his partner. Theft was seriously addressed, and a protracted payment plan was agreed to by Book People, the East Bay employee-owned distributors who extended us credit for a generous period. Savvy booksellers Richard Berman and Paul Yamazaki headed the re-stocking plan. The three of us would go every week to Book People and Lou Swift Distributors to collect enough books to sell the following week. As time went on, everybody at the store consulted book catalogs and took on the responsibility for buying subject sections. I envisioned a participatory structure. If not a co-op, I wanted a bookstore where all the staff had responsibilities and power.
Why the decision not to have multiple bookstore locations around SF?
At one time we seriously considered additional locations. We explored sites in San Francisco’s Mission district and visited city officials in San Jose to talk about a second store there. But our resources were limited, and we were concerned about the time and money that would be required to create a sister store that would embody the same spirit and ethic as the original. During my time as director, the evolving challenges from chain stores and especially Amazon made beginning a new store a very risky enterprise. In retrospect, so many independents were closing that we decided to invest in our present, iconic location. In retrospect I think it was a good decision after watching attempts by other stores fail to duplicate their success elsewhere.
How has North Beach changed, how has it stayed the same? With the exodus of Big Tech and falling rents, how do you think that will affect North Beach and San Francisco in general in the future? Will there be “a rebirth of wonder”?
North Beach when I came to SF was a small bohemian village, where neighbors shared meals on their flat rooftops watching the sun set over the Bay. My rent was $125 a month, cheap even then. City Lights and the Discovery Bookstore (used books) next door to Vesuvio were key places to spend an evening. Two large Italian grocers delivered (no charge) bags of groceries up four flights of stairs to my apartment. The neighborhood was full of inexpensive Basque, Italian, and Chinese restaurants, and many cafes, many of which seemed unchanged since the 19th century. Change happens, and City Lights is well prepared for the future. It’s never easy to predict how things will develop, but the feeling of a lovely Mediterranean town persists, with the wooden buildings painted pastel colors, and the shimmering sea light on misty days. I feel certain that the light of City Lights will prevail for a long time to come.

Do you feel that your gender had any impact on your experience during your 23 years as director? Do you have any comments about women in bookselling or publishing in general?
Gender always has an impact. The Beat movement was certainly male focused. Even though the undaunted Diane di Prima was recognized, she was never enthusiastically supported by the inner nucleus of Beat poets. It was a long time before the Beat women came into their own. From the start, Lawrence, who insisted he wasn’t a Beat, had eclectic tastes and was open to women’s poetry. He admired Marianne Moore and Edna St. Vincent Millay as much as he did T.S. Eliot, Jacques Prévert, and Allen Ginsberg. In the Pocket Poets Series, he’d published di Prima and, very early in the series, both Marie Ponsot and Denise Levertov.
Women’s rights and opportunities are always vulnerable and cyclic. The Women’s Movement of the 1970s was very powerful and widespread, its impact on women’s lives enormous. At City Lights we hired more women; we published more women. There have always been outstanding women in publishing and bookselling, and during that time increasingly more women writers were published, reviewed, and were given accolades and awards. Women opened general bookstores and women’s bookstores, founded feminist and lesbian presses. It was a thrilling development, to see so many marginalized writers, and not just women, finding established publishers or creating their own presses. Together they created a larger, much more diverse national literature.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with many talented women at the bookstore. And in the publishing branch: Stella Levy, Kim McCloud, and Patricia Fujii. Gail Chiarello collected and edited our bestselling Bukowski stories. Annie Janowitz proposed the timely Unamerican Activities, and Amy Scholder brought us classics by Karen Finley, Rebecca Brown, and others. I’m happy to say that Amy Scholder is again working with City Lights as an editor.
When did you meet the now current publisher and executive director Elaine Katzenberger? What was her position at the bookstore? When did you know that she was the right person to take over as director?
Ah, Elaine, the woman who can do everything! Elaine began at the bookstore sales counter, then reorganized files and the store accounts, and very soon excelled as a book buyer. She had a great feeling for good writing, so I asked her to become an editor and she immediately began adding excellent books to City Lights’ list. She’s smart, witty, multitalented, and politically astute. We are very lucky to have her at the helm.
What is your understanding or vision of what of City Lights is and what it could be? How has Lawrence’s passing impacted this?
Lawrence’s democratic inclusiveness made him the best-selling poet in the U.S. His moral principles, his courage and resilience are a model to be emulated. He conceived City Lights as an educational institution that would open minds to explore and relate to the world through books. “One guy told me he’d got the equivalent of a Ph. D just sitting in the basement reading all our great books,” he often reminded us.
His “literary gathering place” was to be a fulcrum of San Francisco cultural experience, where our bookselling and publishing could amplify the voices of diverse experiences, connect with other creative communities, and serve as a center of dissent and, at the same time, a force for creating a better society.
Lawrence’s vision will continue to be our guiding light. An optimistic realist, he believed that City Lights would long endure as the co-creation of all the dedicated people who work here and make it what it is.

Future Me Letter Response
So last year, I decided to go on the site Future Me and make a letter to my future self. Well, I received it today and I decided I’d respond to it here.
Here’s the letter (Please note, some names will be removed for the sake of privacy):
Dear FutureMe, Hey, Wren. Do you still go by Wren? If not, that's okay. I'd rather we not keep a name if we're uncomfortable with it (not that I am right now, but I guess I don't know if I end up feeling that way.). I'm in a weird place right now. In case you don't remember, Unus Annus was deleted yesterday and it feels weird not to have it on my YouTube feed anymore. For the past year, it's been such a constant of chaos and existential dread, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. Do you still have the UA notes in your Google Docs? If so, do you still look back on it every now and then (when you're not busy with classwork. Oh, who am I kidding? You're still on the internet and procrastinating most of the time.)? Also, have you made that YouTube channel? Recently, I've started to come up with UA-esque ideas for my own channel. I hope I actually act on that. If you haven't, it's okay. There's always next year. How's the family doing? Ever since Aunt Mom died, things have felt good between Uncle Dad and me. He calls every now and then to check on me. It's so sweet! (Hopefully, nothing happened to him and I didn't just make my future self cry. If I did, I'm so sorry!) Are you still close with Aunt L? We went out for lunch at J&P's yesterday (in her new car) and had a great time. Hopefully, when you're reading this, Little Miss Rona is gone and you and her are able to go on your monthly dinners (if nothing happened to her, which I hope nothing did). Have you discovered more about your identity? Right now, I identify as a grayasexual lesbian aromantic homoalterous demigirl (boy, that's a mouthful!). That could always change, though. However I choose to identify in the future, just know that you are valid, no matter what anyone says. Have you written more of your stories lately? Right now, I'm on (yet another) hiatus. I'm hoping to improve on the speed and quality of my writing. Hopefully, I actually have (at least a little bit). Is @lildevyl still on Tumblr and writing? She's such a sweet person! So many bad things are happening to her right now that she doesn't deserve. If she's still there, send a message to her after you read this letter. Let her know how much you care for and appreciate her. You'll really make her day. Now, to the big questions for 2021. First of all, how is Biden doing as President? Are things getting better? More importantly, did Trump have to get escorted out of the White House by security? If he did, was it hilarious? I bet it was! I hope that guy was treated exactly how he treated the country: with no respect whatsoever. Anyway, rant over. Okay, here's my second big question: how's drinking? I don't think I'm gonna be a big drinker. In fact, I know I'm not gonna be a big drinker (unless you drink that alcoholic iced tea.). How was your first drink? What was your first drink? Where did you have your first drink? Okay, I'm done asking drinking questions. You're probably tired of that. How is my cosplay thing going? I've been telling myself that I'm gonna be doing some once I have enough money to buy stuff for it. The ones I'm the most excited to do are Mayor Damien and Actor Mark. Have you been able to do those? If so, know that I'm internally screaming just imagining it. Okay, I think that's all I've wanted to ask. The only thing I have left to say is this: you're an amazing person with so much to give. Please be kinder to and more patient with yourself. Change doesn't come instantly. Just keep moving to the best of your ability and know that there are so many people who believe in you (and this is coming from yourself, so you can't deny it!). And as Mark said on that UA livestream, be sure to try and spend every second doing stuff that makes you happy, whether it be working on a story or just relaxing and watching YouTube videos. I guess what I'm trying to say is take care of and believe in yourself. I wish nothing but the best for future me in all that I do.
Hope to see you again in 2022, Wren Wesley
My response
Past Me,
Hello from the future. To start off, no, we chose not to keep the name Wren. After a while, we ended up feeling like it didn’t fit us. Now, we go by either Tori or Arden. We have decided that we want to make Arden our middle name. Mae is too feminine, and Arden seems like a name that fits us. Yes, I remember Unus Annus being deleted. How could I forget? As you said, it impacted us so much. In fact, we set up an anniversary project for it on the internet. Unfortunately, mental health stuff got in the way and we had to postpone it to next year. Hopefully, I’ll be talking about it in my letter response in 2022. As for the notes, yes, we kept them. No, we haven’t looked at them every day. We’ve been so swept up in TikTok, Tumblr, and YouTube (as well as school stuff, of course) that we haven’t really looked at it for a while. Regardless, I still have it in my Google Docs and will be looking at it again sometime either today or this week, since you reminded me. Unfortunately, we haven’t made that channel yet. We got kinda sidetracked with life and, again, mental health. As you said, there’s always next year, so I’ll try as hard as I can to make that happen. Family relations hasn’t been too good recently. A few days ago, I started a temporary college leave and am living with Aunt L until Fall 2022. Uncle Dad isn’t too happy about it. He feels as we’re abandoning him. However, you know as well as I do that we need a break from that environment. We don’t feel like we can truly be ourselves with him. From this, we’ve discovered that we have troubles with communication. We’re looking to get therapy for it very soon. For now, we’re settling into Aunt L’s house. The room she gave us is nice. We even have a TV to play our Switch on (yes, we got a switch this year. Aunt L gave it to us as a birthday present). I guess that answered your questions about our relationship with her. And yes, we are once again doing our monthly outings with her. Our identity has changed somewhat drastically since you wrote this letter. As of 2021, you will start identifying as an Agender/Neutrois, Libramasculine, Aromantic, Panqueerplatonic, Aegobisexual. Yep, it’s even more of a mouthful now. However, we’re much happier with our identity now. Yes, we have some moments of doubt, but everyone has those moments. we haven’t written many stories lately. In fact, we accidentally deleted our writing blog, so now we’re mainly writing on AO3 (when we do write). However, we have so many ideas for new stories and hopefully they’ll be written by the time I respond to the next letter. We also discovered that the speed of our writing doesn’t really matter. Write on your own time (although you do still need to push yourself to write every now and then). Yes, Dev is still on Tumblr. We haven’t talked much this year, unfortunately. I’m hoping to improve on that from now on. I don’t want her to end up another person that I fall out of contact with due to my lack of socialness. (Dev, since I tagged you in this, just know how much I appreciate you. I’m gonna try to show that appreciation more this coming year, because you deserve all of it. You are such an amazing and talented person who I have the amazing pleasure of knowing.). Biden has been...meh. I mean, I feel less constantly stressed than when Trump was in office. However, there has been a shortage of a lot of things recently. Whether that’s him or a side effect of Covid, I don’t know. But, yeah, it’s a pretty meh presidency so far. And no, Trump didn’t have to get escorted out. However, Trump supporters did storm the Capital in January, so yeah...As for drinking, it’s not all that, just like we expected. Other adults hyped it up way too much. My first drink was this random, small bottle of wine at Uncle Dad’s house. It was terrible! The cosplay thing is moving very slowly, but we’ve done more. We haven’t dressed as Damien or Actor yet (sorry, you have to hold your excitement for a while). Still, we dressed as Chase and made 2 cosplays out of our DA OC, Nora Ables. It’s not much, but it’s still progress. Well, that’s all the answers I got. Thanks for the encouragement. You didn’t know, but I needed that so much right now. Anyway, I guess I’ll write another letter and make this a tradition. So, see you next year,
Tori Arden/WeirdMix

got tagged by @angelknive to post my reading list for this year!! i don't really have an official plan or anything, i usually just pick anything that looks good, but here's some off my list of "books to buy once i have money again" lmao.  yes these are p much all ya,, please don’t judge me i love ya books and i have not yet properly branched out into adult fiction
super adjacent (crystal cestari): i passed this one by a couple times bc i thought it was gonna be another boring ass straight romance, but i changed my mind i wanna read it now.  it’s about superheroes in a corporate world and their sidekicks, and it’s wlw which really is the defining factor for me.  i like superheroes, i’m gay, what more can i really ask for here?
unwind (neal shusterman): so i’m... still not sure about this book?  like it could be really good, and it has decent ratings, but.  i kind of feel like i might hate it.  overall i’m putting it on the list bc i do really love a good dystopia, and i haven’t read one in a while now.  abortion is illegal, but between ages 13-18, parents can have their kids “unwound”- their organs will be transplanted into different recipients, so they technically haven’t died.  three kids slated for unwinding attempt to escape.
the degenerates (j. albert mann): four girls in the early 1900s find themselves landed in the massachusetts school for the feeble-minded.  the premise reminds me very vaguely of one of my favourite musicals, love in hate nation, so i want to give it a shot.  also i find the history of boarding schools/institutions v interesting, plain and simple.
as i descended (robin talley): two words, ladies and germs: lesbian macbeth.  as that gay loser who really enjoyed shakespeare in high school i legally have to give this one a shot.
foul is fair (hannah capin): ...believe it or not, the same two words apply.  macbeth is just my absolute favourite shakespeare play ok, and this one is a super cool revenge plot that’s supposed to kind of be like heathers, which i also love.  i am so goddamn excited about this book in particular- this is right up my alley.
out of salem (hal schrieve): genderqueer main character!  written by a nonbinary author!  zombies!  muslim lesbian main character!!  werewolves!!!!  i’m always here for supernatural elements in a realistic setting, and this one looks like it’ll really hit the spot.  again, this one’s high on the priority list.
death prefers blondes (caleb roehrig): it’s a jewel heist, but your crew is a rebellious teen heiress and a team of badass kickboxing drag queens.  this premise seems absolutely batshit, so of course i want to read it and see if it can really live up to all that hype.
lovely war (julie berry): so it’s technically a ww1 romance, buuuut it’s being told by aphrodite to hephaestus and ares during ww2.  i am.  really, really not one for historical fiction, let alone war fiction, and i really don’t read straight romance books (bc i often find them super boring... i read a lot of bad romantic subplots back in hs and it completely turned me off from them as a whole) but that concept is really neat sounding to me.
like i said, no real plan, i might only read one of these, or i might get distracted at the bookstore next week and find totally different ones.  nothing’s a hard rule
i uh.  don’t know who to tag.  i don’t really follow many book-related blogs?  if you see this and think it looks cool you should do it and tag me tho 👀

Ilia, drowsily: Can you explain to my why you woke me up this early in the morning? I was sleeping so peacefully.
Blake, walking in the halls: Because I owe you a favor, and Im planning on repaying it to you now.
Ilia, yawning: And how is waking me up from a blissful sleep doing me a favor exactly?
Blake: I told you it's a surprise, so quite asking.
Ilia, groaning: Couldnt you just give me money like a regular person?
Blake, smirking: Trust me, you are going to love this waaaaay more than money. You can count on that.
Ilia: What is that supp—
Blake: Okay, we're here. Come on in.
Ilia: Huh?

Ilia: Pardon?
Blake, proudly: Youre going to work out today.
Ilia:.........are you telling me that you woke me up and took me away from my comfortable bed, telling me you're going to do me a favor, just to reveal that we are going to workout together?
Blake: Nope.
Ilia: Nope?
Blake, smiling: Nope. I'm going to be leaving.
Ilia: Youre leaving?!
Blake: Yes.
Ilia:........okay, allow me to rephrase my statement then. Are you telling me that you woke me up and took me away from me comfo—
Blake: *Gently guides Ilia's head to the left of the room*
Pyrrha: *Sweating, while doing pull ups with weights attached to her in a sports bra and shorts*
Ilia, tongue tied: —rtab-eautiful g-girl. T-thats a beautiful girl.
Blake: *Smiles satisfyingly*
Ilia, blushing: O-oh my god. J-just look at her. Look at those abs. Look at those legs. She has to be the most hottest girl ever.
Blake, smirking: Hey Pyrrha! We’re here!
Ilia, blushing: W-What are you doing!?
Pyrrha, turning towards them: Hmm? Oh, hey Blake! *drops off bar and walks towards them* You made it right on time.
Ilia, flustered: R-right in t-time? W-What is she talking a-about, Blake?
Blake, smiling: Well, I was talking to Pyrrha the other day and I mentioned how you told me that you want to start working out.
Ilia, confused: I-I d-did?
Blake, smiling: Yep. Remember? But you were hesistant because you wouldn’t really know where to start or what to do. Well thankfully Pyrrha here—
Pyrrha, waving: Hello.
Blake: Was kind enough to help you.
Ilia, looking up at Pyrrha: *Under her breath* S-so tall.
Pyrrha, smiling: Yeah. I understand how confusing it can be when you first start working out.
Ilia: *under her breath* T-toned sweaty muscles.
Pyrrha: So I’m going to be with you the entire time helping you out.
Ilia: *Under her breath* B-body of a w-war goddess.
Pyrrha, smiling wider: Plus it will be nice to have a full time workout partner too. As you can see, most people dont really get up as early as me, so having someone to work out with each morning is unfortunately limited.
Ilia, staring at Pyrrha's everything:......
Pyrrha: Uh.....hey, are you alright?
Ilia, snapping out of it: H-huh? *Shakes head* O-oh, yeah. I am. Sorry. *Ahem* S-So uhm, h-how are you going to h-help m-me work out e-exactly?
Pyrrha: Well, I’m going to spot you, logically. I’m going to help you set up a training routine that would be good for you. And I’m also going to help your posture when working out.
Ilia: *Visually imagines Pyrrha’s hands all over her body to help her posture*
Ilia: *Internal Lesbian Screaming™*
Pyrrha, smiling: Anyway let's get started. First we should stretch and wake our muscles. I already did this earlier, but I won't mind doing it again. *Crouches down and bends one leg while stretching the other one all the way out* Here, do this.
Ilia, trying to mimic the stretch: L-like this?
Pyrrha: Not exactly. Here, allow me.
Pyrrha: *Help fixes Ilia's posture, her hands logically touching the girl's thighs* I should be more like this.
Ilia: *Whimpers*
Blake, smiling: Anyway, I'll leave you two at this. See you around in class, Pyrrha.
Pyrrha, smiling: You too. Okay, now move this thigh up a little bit so it won't be limp, like this. *Touches Ilia's thigh again*
Ilia: *Useless Lesbian Whimper™*
Pyrrha, smiling: Okay great. Now just do this in reverse for your other leg and we can move on to be next one. Sounds good?
Ilia, voice cracking: S-sounds great.
