Day Sixty-one
Two whole months in now!
It's been a soggy night at Creetown but it's up and at 'em, the tent will hopefully have an opportunity to dry sometime!
Out from the forest, it's straight into tye climbs as the road continues up around the Hill of Burns, with countless bubbling water courses flowing past.
The gradient isn't too bad, but it's a long climb ehich seems to go on and on and on.
Finally up and over on the north side of the hill, the long climb is paid off with a long cruise downhill through more greenery and brooks until finally rolling in to the nice little town of Gatehouse of Fleet, which is covered in multicoloured pennants.
Route 7 from here heada south and crosses over the main road before heading around the hilly forests around Girthon and continuing into the countryside roads.
The sky has been heavily overcast all morning so far and finally the rains begin to float down aalt this point, which with the winds still making a strong showing makes for a pretty dreary day.
The route loops out around to the coastline where the waves are crashing mightily against the cliffs, with a good few more sloggy hills to pedal over before rolling over the River Dee and in to Kirkcudbright.
After a brief break by the harbour, it's back to the climbing once more with some heavy work heading up into the surrounding farmlands. The road finally swings left at Gelston and rolls down into Castle Douglas.
I take a break here for some respite from the weather to throw some fuel in me, which is well timed as the rains intensity whilst I'm sheltering up.
As the weather lightens a little, I head back out onto the road and we're into another big climb to see out the day, with the road seemingly ascending up without respite through the cloudy hills.
It's some damn tough going with the rain lashing in, and I figure the day should likely be called soon. Alas with the dense farmland all around, there is little opportunity to pitch up anywhere as sturdy fences and walls abound.
Finally cresting the hill and cruising downwards, I spy some open grass at Lochfoot by the edge if Lochrutton Loch. Hastily pitching up, it's time to dive under cover and finally get a break from the rains.
An arduous day, but with some good progress! Roll on tomorrow!

FINDING FIELD-NAMES (5) MARCH
Very often, where two farms meet, the fields are named after the adjoining farm. The field named Boreland March (right of drystone dyke) is on Carrick Farm while Big Carrick (left of drystone dyke) is on Boreland Farm.
March is from Old English mearc via Anglo-French marcheand Scots merche meaning a border. The March Dykes Act 1661 required neighbouring landowners to split the cost of building a shared boundary when the land was enclosed. In southwest Scotland the term march dyke is used to describe the boundary of a farm. It was usually the first drystone dyke built when a farm was enclosed and is often taller than the dykes built later to subdivide the farmland.
This dyke defines more than the boundary of two farms as it also marks the extent of an estate and parish. The boundary appears on a 1761 map and is annotated to show the line of the border as “the Bounding dyke of the Parks of Cally….and….the separation betwixt the Parishes of Girthon and Borgue”. The map was drawn to explain locations being considered in a dispute over dykes blocking traditional routes to fords crossing the River Fleet.
