I absolutely adore Kate, and she's probably one of my favorite characters to draw other than Alex or Gaz haha I am just,,,obsessed with her wife and I love that there isn't really a hard description for her so pretty much anything is fair game.

But YES, compared to Kate, her wife is practically a sweetheart. Not saying that Kate isn't nice,,,but she's more prone to thinking of the worst possible outcome first before anything else lmao I feel like Kate needs someone who is stubborn as *hell*, and refuses to let her sink into herself. She's pretty introverted, but is a bit more social than Kate. She's that mom who sees someone at the grocery store and spends a good 30 minutes talking to them. She's very good friends with Nik, but lowkey dislikes Price and he knows it and knows not to say anything about it.

Her wife always gave me doctor vibes, and I cannot get the image of a young Kate who just joined the CIA looking up and seeing this absolutely angel leaning over her, and giving her the dumbest smile ever while she conveniently forgets about the bullet wound in her side. And the fact that she's currently bleeding all over the place, but that's another conversation for another time <3

A random hc that I have is that Kate is someone who literally cannot sit still for the life of her, and she *needs* to be constantly moving or doing something with her body unless you want to see her go stir crazy. I like to think that she and her wife own a small farm/ranch with a few animals, and everytime she comes home she loves doing all the extra work around the farm.

And yes her wife will be played by Gina Torress in the future Hallmark film featuring their love story. I heard it's coming out in 2025 so be on the look out!

The index

In Rosalind Krauss' 1977 essay 'Notes on The Index' the semiotic term Index, originally developed by Charles Sanders Peirce is examined in the context of art.

examples of indexes include:

a fingerprint, which represents the trace left by a presence

a photograph, where light interacts with a surface to create an imprint

Krauss also stated that the index, in the context of art, highlights material connections to reality as well as traces, marks and evidence.

Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Untitled, 1991 / Nedko Solakov, Fear, 2002–3

Felix Gonzalez-Torress' 1991 photograph 'Untitled' was displayed on billboards throughout New York. The image depicts an unmade double bed with two pillows, each bearing the impressions left by the heads of those who recently occupied it. This intimate scene made public, is notable for the two identical pillows, with the indexical impressions on them mirrored by the photograph itself, which creates a 'trace of a trace'

Nedko Solakov's 2002-3 work titled 'Fear' was created during the artist's travels - holding small lumps of clay in his fists, allowing the malleable material to capture every movement of his hands during anxious airplane journeys, providing a tangible insight into intangible emotions.

Choice of brief

I chose to pursue and explore the Index brief over the stranger because of its profound connection to physicality and the body. Its infinite avenues for exploration excite me - every mark is inherently indexical, a trace of an action or presence. When I think of the body, I am drawn to its visceral reality—blood, flesh, and the horror of being human. 

The Abject

These initial associations led me to concepts like Julia Kristeva’s theory of the abject, as outlined in her 1980 work Powers of Horror. Kristeva describes the abject as the feelings of disgust, revulsion, and horror we experience when confronted with something that collapses the boundary between ourselves and the “other”, such as bodily fluids, decay, and corpses. The abject is not only repulsive but paradoxically captivating, luring us in even as it horrifies us.

Notable examples of abject art include Piero Manzioni’s 1961 Artist’s Shit and Andres Serrano’s 1987 Piss Christ, where the abject quality arises from the tension between the use of urine as a material and a sacred object - forcing the audience to confront their discomfort and beliefs.

The Index and The Abject

Kristeva's theory of the abject and Krauss' concept of the index are deeply connected, especially through their intrinsic and shared focus on the materiality of the body and physical traces.

The abject focuses on traces but in an especially visceral manner. Abject matter such as bodily fluids are physical signifiers of the boundaries between the self and the other being crossed - but they also remind us of the body's presence.

The abject and the index both anchor the viewer to reality, which can often cause unease. In art, this materialises in work that uses abject materials as indexes of presence

bloodstains are indexical in that they are a physical trace of the body but are also abject because of their link to injury and death

body casts or imprints, like the work of Ana Mendieta, where the artist leaves a physical trace in a manner that tests the boundaries between the self and the other

Gina Pane, The Conditioning, 1973 / Vito Acconci, Trademarks, 1970

Gina Pane’s 1973 performance involved her pressing her body against a grid of burning candles, leaving physical marks on her skin. The body becomes an index of pain and endurance.

For his 1970 work Trademarks, Vito Acconci bit into his own body and then used the bite marks to create prints, his body both the medium and the subject.

Psyché [Psyche], 1974 / Azione Sentimentale, 1973

When the abject and the index intersect in art the effect is potent. The indexical traces draw attention to the material's relationship with the real world while the abject taps into the viewer's emotions, creating powerful feelings of unease and prompting a confrontation of the fragility of existence.

Overall I liked the episode.

But as a fan of TK and Carlos as characters and as Tarlos I’m disappointed. Not because the moments were cut- I’m realistic, it happens- they’re not Rob Lowe or Gina Torress so if FOX need to find the 0.4 seconds those two kisses took then fair play. (I’m also skeptical) I’m more disappointed in the way FOX continues to use the fan base for these character and relationship to draw in viewers by putting these moments in the clips and in promo photos.

Apart from a couple of throwaway comments there wasn’t really anything to show the fact they are boyfriends- something the creators and the wonderful actors have been selling us. But at the same time if this is the only time this cutting nonsense happens this season, I’ll be angry but get over it. They have said we will see the relationship developing, they didn’t say that last season, so hopefully we do get to see it.

What I don't understand is that in another post you said: "And yes, Eddie’s father is from Mexico, which means he’s half Latino. But Latino =/= race. Latino is an ethnicity, so he’s ethnically Latino and racially White." Do you mean that all Latino people are white? Or just the ones that are "white-passing"? I genuinely don't understand, because a Latino person from Mexico with darker skin (for example) does NOT look white, but if Latino is not a race, then what race are they?

No, I'm saying that Latino people CAN be white, not that they ALL are.

For example: Cameron Diaz and Gina Torress are both Latina, and to try to erase that because one of them is a white Latina and the other is a black Latina is... not a good look. But additionally, to imply that Cameron is a POC is ALSO... not a good look.

So basically, Latino is not any one race. It can be many races. That does not erase the ethnicity of a Latino person, and that does not mean that they can't/don't face discrimination because that is also incorrect. It just means that they can be racially white.

I meant this one to be set after Beyond events, but I'd have to change the uniforms in the avatars so... no, thank you. Anyway, Gaila has become part of the Enterprise crew in 2262.335, according to the comic books, but let's forget this detail, shall we?

One of the name given to her in the past by official-not-canon material was Marjorie Wimpole. I kept it as second name. I come from a country (Italy) where the wife doesn't and can't take the husband's surname (a woman I knew signed her checks with her husband's name, but that's it. Legally, you have the surname with which you were registered at birth). This to say that a part of me cannot accept the whole "Winona Kirk" thing, because she should just be Winona Davis (apparently that's her surname) or, if ever, Winona Davis Kirk. With the kind of past she has, I would never see her keeping the "Kirk" surname, especially because she would never want to draw attention on herself and her tragedy.

Composed by the construction and other three pics merged together. Funny, though, that - months later - I've seen the same farm used as the Kirk farm in an "official" comic book (a memory of Spock Prime going to visit Jim's grave in Riverside. The prequel to ST XI perhaps?). XD
