In the scene where Jill either misses her mark or refuses to shoot Nicholai leading to her and Carlos' death, when he swiftly turns to throw the knife at her his facial expression seems to be a mix of disappointment, betrayal and even very painful for him to do. His chuckle seems to be more of a cover for his disappointment that he was correct in her fears. I know he has his motivations and his directives, but why would the designers put that in the game with that pained expression on his face?

Post 2 continued: Seems deliberately placed, what was that expression about and why would they put that in the game? Why not just have him smile or even determined to prove her weak and end it?

And thanks for answering my questions, I just really want to understand the motivations of the writers and designers when they plan things the way they do, your explanations are amazing!

First off, sorry for taking so long to reply this time, and you’re welcome! 😊 Finding out what goes in the creators’ mind is something super interesting and can make you look at certain stuff in a different light - though in the cases we’ve been talking about, I’m mostly infering from what seems more obvious. In my experience, for RE storytelling, I think Occam’s razor is the best approach, because its stories are usually pretty straightforward and simple (which I don’t think it’s a bad thing.)

Now about the scene, I rambled a lot about it here, but it’s true that he looks disappointed there for a second. To be honest, I’m not sure if it was intended or not, because when you look at the actual scene and not just gifs/screencaps, it goes by very quick, so it could be just the actor doing an expression of exertion since Carlos had Nicholai on a chokehold seconds before, or maybe it’s just one of those things that happens with mocap that (despite how good RE3's mocap is) not all expressions are conveyed as well and it might give the wrong impression.

But that’s something we’ll never know, and whether it was intended or not, it fits that he’d be disappointed in Jill at that moment since his reaction when she shoots is almost the opposite - like there’s a tinge of approval there, and he’s laughing at the end. So why not show him disappointed if she fails to shoot? His words are “Knew you couldn’t pull the trigger,” so she’s proven that he was right all along in this ending, and just before the scene he had told her “shame you didn’t listen to me when you had the chance.” I think it fits with the dynamic that Jill and Nicholai have in RE3R, since he’s constantly telling her she should be worrying about surviving on her own and not others. He shows disapproval when she fights him back in the garage because of Murphy’s death, then shows approval when she goes on the subway leaving Carlos behind. It’s more or less the same, just applied to the ending.

(This has me thinking about a character approval system like in Dragon Age, but for Resident Evil XD)

So, to sum it up and not start ranting much again (which I’m prone to do 😂), I do think he *looks* disappointed - not sure it was deliberate, but what was deliberate is having him laugh his ass off when Jill leaves him to die, so I think it’s fair to assume the opposite could be right as well.

Tell us your Chris and Jill headcanons!

Hi there Nonnie,

I'd 1st like to apologize for taking awhile to answer this, as life outside here got kind of crazy and I wanted to answer this when I had the time and clearer mind to do so! So let's go! *If you were to ask either one who made the 1st move on asking each other out neither one could really tell you as they have not a clue themselves the answer to that question! 

*During their time at the S.T.A.R.S. office, whenever Jill was feeling down, Chris would grab his guitar and play a random song for Jill to guess. Although it annoyed her at times, she couldn't resist and would name the song. If she didn't get it right, she'd blame (jokingly ofc) Chris' for playing it so off key.

*Post Re5, Jill passed up scar revision surgery b/c she wanted to keep her scars as a reminder of her surviving and reason for continuing to keep fighting bioterrorism everyday. Chris supported her decision 100% as her scars never bothered him and admired her courage to keep them.

*Once a week, they meet up with Claire to catch up on each other lives. Sometimes they meet up at a restaurant or sometimes Chris will throw some steaks on the grill (forever grateful towards Barry for grilling tips) for them to have at home with Jill preparing and cooking the sides.

*Speaking of cooking, sometimes they do this to decide who is cooking for the night!

*Jill's stance in the bedroom:

*On their days off when they can, Chris loves taking Jill hiking/camping(In her apartment in RE3R, we see pics of her hiking on trails and mountain climbing). After their hikes, he gives her a wildflower bouquet from the flowers he picked along the way and a campfire dinner to finish off the day!

*Jill loves to do things for Chris too and knowing him as long as she does, she always did pay attention to his interests over time. For example, next month she's taking him to see the 25th anniversary concert of his favorite band, "Big E" (a fictional band that appeared on a poster in both the OG and Reimagining of RE3. The band members were from Raccoon City too!) . Which will no doubt lead to this later after the concert:

Something I noticed in RE3R while making gifs. In the subway where Jill encounters Nemesis, there’s a poster on the wall of bootleg Top Gun.

And you who in RE is based on Tom Cruise’s character from Top Gun?

Best boy Chris Redfield, who was in Code Veronica; my favorite RE, and the second best game in the series (#1 being RE1R, because I say so).

And you know when Code Veronica was released?

20 years ago, after RE3. It’s also a direct sequel to RE2, which had its own remake. So what does this all mean?
