A fantastic article in the Detroit News a few days ago about gardens sprouting up in schools lately and the benefits the they’re bringing. . The story begins with a school in Holly, MI; an Elementary School teacher started a small, simple garden to show her students not only how to grow food, but how also to practice science. . The garden is now in its third year, and every child has a hand in helping plant and care for the garden. . Gardens help teach where food comes from, they encourage healthy eating practices, gives them an opportunity to practice their science labs and also creates a sense of community. . Gardening also helps to teach the gardener how to care for their body by growing fuel for it. The gardener has a hand in creating the body’s food, so more care will automatically go in to the process. Just like we used to change our own spark plugs (some of us still do); the point is that growing some of your own food helps to re-discover that knowledge that our Grandparents and further back had - because they HAD to have it - about what food is good for our systems and what isn’t. And how to care for that food during the growing process, up to the time that it comes to the table to be consumed. . The body like to get into the earth; it knows where it comes from. A common saying is that gardening is like therapy. A bit of that is a truth, because when your hands are in the dirt, you’re automatically paying attention to what you’re doing; and you are creating an awareness and an appreciation about what you’re putting into your body. . There’s some yoga in there too. There’s also some spirituality; all because you’re getting more@connected to what you’re doing and to the earth.
