Biography: A tiny bird, born at the close of the month, on the cusp of what many in years before would consider the pinnacle of spiritual activity. However, the Ollivanders, unlike most in the Wizarding world, are not a superstitious family. Their girls were a blessing whether they were born when the spiritual world danced or on a banal spring day. Then again, the Ollvianders never were what people expected of them and neither were their girls. The first girls born into the family in several generations.

As a noted member of the Sacred Twenty-Eight, you would think the family upheld the high social standards of the other social elite. Yet, if you did not know their name from their highly successful wandmaking business, you would be surprised to find their name on the list.

Gracelyn and Georgiana, nicknamed Avery by her grandfather, spent their childhood rolling around in the mud, chasing a plethora of magical creatures, and staring at the stars until their parents called them in for bed. There was not one hint of silk dresses, ballroom dancing lessons, or etiquette lessons to be had for the Ollivander girls. Just the wilds of the Highlands and their family’s vast swatches of untamed wilderness and conservatories with every plant, animal, and biome you could imagine.

Avery grew up thinking life was all fairy tales and adventures. The girls were blessed to be able to experience a childhood with very little expectation and hardly any limitations. The Ollivander estate was often a chaotic mess of coming and going, missed bedtimes, and mountains of books.

However, as the girls grew, Avery found a love of all things literary and natural. Often she could be found in the family library reading some magical textbook in one hand and a dictionary or reference book in the other. Her grandfather’s tales of wandlore and days spent crafting his wands seemed an idyllic lifestyle to be coveted. It was clear that Avery was more suited to her Grandfather’s lifestyle than her father’s longing of getting away from the family business.

At Hogwarts, Avery was your typical Ravenclaw locked in the library for long stretched broken up only by her jaunts to the greenhouse. While some people can fly with ease, Avery Ollivander can make a plant blossom and grow with absolute ease. It would be hard to find a greener thumb that passed through Hogwarts.

Fairly friend and approachable, Avery had no problems making friends with her classmates whether in her year or another. Social ambition was never her ladder to climb and she harbored no desire to assert her social standing, or what could be her social standing. The Ollivanders were and still are old money, members of the Twenty-Eight, but you’d never know outside the occasional glint of expensive jewelry or other trinket gifted to Avery by her parents or grandparents.

After graduation, Avery spent the next several years traveling the world. Her adventures took her from the forests of America, to the hot plains of Africa, to the blossoming cherry trees of Japan in search of honing her craft. While her grandfather, one of the best wandmakers in the world, was happy to see her craft grow under his guidance, Avery wanted to see the world. Learn for whoever she could; whether it was a master or a home wandmaker seeking to hone their skills as well. Part of it was love of her work and part of it was a child full of wanderlust needing to see more than the span of their island country.

Having recently returned to London, Avery seeks to practice her wandmaking skills while assuming the day to day business of Ollivanders. She can often be found in the store helping customers in the light of day and experimenting long into the night. The only thing she loves more than helping a witch or wizard find their perfect wand match, is pulling them into the shop at all hours for a cup of tea and a story. Avery Ollivander has a bad habit of adopting people as her grandmother does stray cats. 

It is the goodness and righteousness in her spirit that aligns her with the side of the Order of the Phoenix, but as business owners dependent on customers, the Ollivander’s have tried to maintain their standing as a neutral party in the happenings around them, at least in public. Every once in a while Avery hears whispers around the manor of a  backdoor deal or information being traded to the Order, but has no hardcore proof of such things. She longs to join the fight on the side of the righteous, but knows it would not be tolerated due to the family’s perceived neutrality.

Avery knows that one day she will have to choose between the family business she adores so much and taking a stand for what she knows is right.

Headcanons:

The Ollivanders are one of the oldest families in the wizarding world and wand making business. Their business has been around since 382 BCE. However, they do not flaunt their wealth and connections openly in public but own a large swath of land in the Scottish Highlands where they have several large gardens, conservatories, and animal refuges where they grow their wand supplies and care for animals who are in need, even those outside the ones they need for wand making.

The members born into the Ollivander line always have names that start with a G--aka Garrick Ollivander, Avery's grandfather, and her father Garrett Ollivander and his brother Garlen. Avery's given name is Georgiana Avery Ollivander, but she never uses it. Even at Hogwarts the only time she was called Georgiana was for her Sorting ceremony.

She has a twin sister named, Gracelyn Ollivander (name flexible in case someone wants to pick up the sibling). They also have a little sister, Gisella Ollivander.

Avery is exceptionally talented at Herbology, but also at potions, which often gets overlooked by her skills with plants. Her aspirations are to use these skills to one day take over Ollivander's from her father, who now runs the family shop as he does not have the same ambition for it as her grandfather.

After graduation, Avery spent several years traveling around the world on various apprenticeship to famous wand makers. She spent time in America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. She would like to incorporate more "worldly" options and woods for wands for their customers. She is often up late at the shop experimenting with new woods, cores, and designs. Anyone out late in Diagon Alley can find a good cup of tea and entertainment at Ollivander's.

Ollivander's shop has traditionally been passed down oldest child to oldest child. Garrick Ollivander passed his shop down to his oldest son Garrett Ollivander (Avery's dad). As the oldest children to Garrett, the twins, would be the first females to inherit the shop in many, many, many generations. The shop is mostly run by Garrick, albeit a rapidly aging Garrick, and and his grandchildren that are interested. Garrett's skills are in business and as such, he handles the books and advertising aspect as he has no great skill for wand making (a first in the family). Avery has inherited her grandfather's skills and passion for wand making.

Georgie couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped her. “You think flair is bullshit?” She crossed her arms over her chest, looking Georgette up and down. “And yet you wear those boots.” She raised one eyebrow, knowing full well there was truth behind her words. “You claim to not want flair and yet you have flair on right now. Those boots are not typical around here. You wear them to get the attention they bring. They may have practical uses, sure. But you could get that with something much less. There’s nothing wrong with it. In fact, it makes life more interesting. You can say you’re above it but you’re not.” 

“We all do flair in different ways. You with your boots. Me with my pants. It’s two sides of the same coin.” People always tried to come for her. Her skin was much thicker than people realized. Georgette included. “If you really thought flair was bullshit, you wouldn’t have those. It’s as simple as that.” 

Georgette was never one to back down but she’s fighting about fashion? What the ever loving fuck? She never thought fashion would be a fight. She didn’t have any kind of fashion sense. That’s how she liked it. She wore whatever she could find without worrying about where it came from. Men’s clothes, women’s clothes, mix-matched socks — she tried to make sure her socks didn’t have holes but she wasn’t always that lucky but she did what she had to do. Money wasn’t a luxury to the Ollivander.

…that was why this fight was important. She only allowed herself to buy one thing for herself and she’s being reprimanded for it. One. Thing. Georgette could feel her ears heating up. Moving slowly toward Georgiana, Georgette began talking with her hands. “Listen here, you spoiled brat, I work for the things I have. I don’t have anyone to buy me a damn thing. It’s all me. Me. Do you know what it’s like to want for anything? My guess is no,” she inched closer and closer with each word. “I don’t spend a n y t h i n g on myself aside from these fucking boots that, yes, do have purpose when you’re working around shards of wood and sharp instruments.”

She wanted to smack Georgiana, apparently having more internal rage about this topic than she imagined. “Don’t try making someone who has worked her entire life for nothing feel like shit for treating herself to one thing. Keep your pearls. I’ll keep my ball-busting boots.”

Barnabus Cuffe is a trans man, yes. All of our characters with transgender faceclaims ( Georgiana Ollivander, Barnabus Cuffe, etc. ) should be played and written as transgender. I hope that clears up any confusion!

Who are your LBGTQ characters?

Oh, gosh, there’s a lot of them. Georgiana Ollivander and Beatrice Puddifoot are both transgender, and we have a large number of non-binary characters as well ( all of which are marked on the masterlist if you want to check this out! ). Honestly, I’d say at least half of the characters have LGBT+ connections in one way or another; we take being diverse and inclusive to everyone very seriously. Marcus Bletchley, Antonin Dolohov, Cordella Figg, Florence Fortescue, Contessina Zabini, Dorcas Meadowes, Marlene McKinnon, Galvin Gudgeon, Philbert Deverill... those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head, but there are a lot of them, so if you’re looking for a LGBTQ+ character, you’re in luck!
