MCFLY JULY ‘24 — the honeymooners.
FEBRUARY 14, 1986
“That’s it, my life is over,” Linda groans, hand covering her eyes. “They are so embarrassing.”
“C’mon, Lin,” Dave attempts to reassure, throwing an arm around her and pulling her close in a one-armed hug, “it’s not like there’s anyone here we know.”
“I had big plans this weekend,” Linda complains, voice muffled. “Now I’m the girl with the freakshow parents instead. I bought that new ski suit for nothing!”
“All the guys are still gonna be falling over themselves for you,” Dave encourages, rubbing her upper arm. “We’ll just… pretend they’re our crazy aunt and uncle.”
“As if we don’t have enough already,” Linda rolls her eyes.
Marty’s managed to tune out his squabbling siblings, focusing completely on their parents. He’s only distantly aware of Jennifer, hands cupping her mug of cocoa, and her head on his shoulder. They’re at a ski resort for the weekend, because he guesses that’s something they can do on a whim now (and apparently his grades are okay enough here that his teachers won’t completely flip out if he skips a day), and his parents have long since abandoned their hot toddies by the fireplace.
Instead, they’re dancing right in the middle of the lodge, singing along to the radio while “I Only Have Eyes For You” plays.
It’s like they’re the only two people in the world, not just the ski lodge, which is maybe why Linda is trying to melt into the couch and Dave is weighing the pros and cons of an escape attempt into the snowstorm.
Thirty years on and they’re still in the honeymoon phase.
“What do you think, Jen, Marty?” Dave asks, and Marty blinks at the mention of his name. “Should we make a break for it?”
“I dunno, Dave,” Marty shrugs, “I think it’s kinda nice.”
“What, you gettin’ soft in your old age?” Dave jokes, which makes Linda roll her eyes for the second time in as many minutes.
“Marty’s right,” Jennifer agrees, smiling at Marty, “it is nice.”
“You gonna get up and join them?” Linda retorts.
“No thanks,” Jennifer curls further into Marty, “right here’s good.”
“Yeah,” Marty smiles, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “Here’s great.”
