sea salt & cologne · scene i
“And yet.. I still believe him anyway. Always. Why do I do that, Mariana?”
a miscommunication and some rather bad wording leads to the obvious. (according to sherlock, at least.)
a/n: heyy first sh&co fic (woop woop!). this was my submission to the sh&co flashbang event that took place in around april. writing sherlock and john's pod dynamic is (obviously) much different from what i know, so it felt a little daunting to enter. but i did! and i was paired with the lovely lovely sweet and jubbly @raveboy34 who did the most scrumptious artwork you'll ever see as you keep reading.
≈ 3000 words.
(read this story on ao3.)
"To fifteen-year-old Nadine from Manchester, thank you for your email. I will make sure to give Archie a treat on your behalf. Erm... Oh! To John! Ha! Jonkster, Johnny boy.. No, sorry," he cleared his throat. "To the listeners, I'm not shouting myself out, obviously, this is another fellow John that listens to the podcast! Isn't that cool? Well, John-that’s-not-me, thank you very much, and I hope you enjoy your holiday in Brum! It's.. an interesting place. Ah- no, that’s.. Let’s not say that," he muttered, pausing the recording with a huff and unconsciously reaching for the mug of tea that was made for him.
He didn’t know how, but on the rare occasions that he decided to, Sherlock consistently made the most impeccable cups of tea. Without fail. John couldn’t even get his own cups of tea right let alone someone else’s.
After taking a large gulp, he leaned back in his swivel chair and gazed at the laptop screen in front of him.
The past forty minutes had consisted of scrolling through fan mail in his bedroom and attempting to complete this week’s shoutouts. There was an overwhelming list of unread emails and he felt awful having to blindly pick out who to respond to. He played the recording back.
“Oh! To John! Ha! Jonkster, Johnny boy.. No, sorry-”
“Ugh,” he scrunched up his face. “Why do I-”
He played it again.
“-John! Ha! Jonkster, Johnny b-”
And again.
“Ha! Jonkster, Johnny boy.. No, sorry–”
“How’s it going?”
He hastily paused the recording and glanced back at the head that had popped in through the gap in the door. “Hey, Mariana,” he dragged, lamely attempting to exit the tab as she peered in.
Having heard the recording, she frowned quizzically.
“Are you.. giving yourself a shoutout?”
“Yeah, that- No, no, I’m..” he shook his head excitedly. “Guess what?”
“What?”
“There’s another John listening to the podcast! Isn’t that awesome? He sent an email. Said he was going to Brum for the summer.”
“Oh, wow,” she stepped into the room, running a hand through her slicked-back curls. She leaned forward and narrowed her eyes at the screen. “I wonder if there’s another Mariana listening somewhere in the world.”
“Yeah, I guess there is! Isn’t that cool?”
Another head of dark curls popped in through the door. “Doubt it.”
“Oi!” he turned to Mariana with an apologetic gaze. “Don’t listen to him, I’m sure there’s loads of Marianas out there.”
“Doubt it.”
He huffed, leaning further back into his chair to see. “And why’s that?”
Sherlock stepped in calmly, bringing his fingers together. His hair was damp against his head, and he carried in a fresh scent of shower gel along with him. “Because no one here is named Mariana, so no one listening to the podcast would feel the need to highlight it should that be their name.”
They rolled their eyes in unison.
He carried on with a sharp intake of air through his teeth, his eyes occasionally glancing at the agonisingly bright laptop screen. “But, taking yourself as an example, I’m almost certain there are at least six other Johns in the vicinity of Baker Street. You’ve a painfully common name,” he finished matter-of-factly.
“Oh thanks, mate,” John ignored the sly smile that tugged at Mariana’s lips. “Well, I apologise for not having a- a rich and pompous name like Sherlock. Yeah, how ridiculous of me. Anything else about me that’s painfully common?”
“Actually, yes. In my free time, I’ve written an essay on both your idiosyncratic and conformate behaviours. Would you like to read it?”
“Well–”
“Hang on, Sherlock, you’ve.. Written an essay about John?” Mariana asked, resting a fist on the back of John’s chair.
“Of course I have,” the detective frowned, absently brushing away a stray curl that fell into and obscured his line of view (John). “In the past year that he and I have been flat-sharing, I’ve come to.. Collect data, if you will.”
“That’s really sweet,” she raised her brows amusedly, fluffy curls bouncing on her shoulder as she tilted her head. “So.. Have you written one about me?”
“Actually, it’s totally reliant on observation and the facts,” he responded sharply, diverting his gaze. “I wouldn’t consider it sweet at all. And no. I have not written one about you.”
“Aw, that’s a shame.”
John pressed his tongue to the inside of his cheek. “Yeah, well, considering he just called me painfully common, I wouldn’t call that a shame.”
“It wasn’t an insult, Watson, it was a fact - yet another inherent trait of yours.”
“What?”
“Taking everything personally.”
“Oi-!”
“See?”
“Mate, we’ve been together for almost a year and all you can say about me is that I’m painfully common?!”
Sherlock shrugged. “We balance each other out. Like..” he scrunched up his face in thought. “Ying a-and..”
“Yin and Yang.”
“Yes.”
“Thanks, mate. So I’m the brawn to your brain.”
“Yes, exactly.” He paused. “What?”
“Oh, because you’re- you’re so uncommon, aren’t y- Well, you know what, you are.”
“Thank you. I take that as a compliment.”
“Oh, yeah, of course you do. How’s this for a compliment? You can’t even–”
“Hey!” Mariana put her hands between them in a feeble attempt to soften the tension. “I think we’re all getting a bit worked up. John, why don’t you finish.. Whatever you’re doing–”
“Shoutouts,” he sighed, rubbing his face annoyedly. “I was just trying to do the bloody shoutouts.”
“Right,” then she glanced sternly at Sherlock. “And why don’t you get back to your experiment?”
The detective straightened himself, pulling his gaze away from John with a frown. “Which one? I currently have four ongoing experiments.”
“I don’t know, how about the one that required you to use all my conditioner? You owe me, by the way. My hair feels like straw now, feel it,” she tilted her hair forward.
“No.”
"But I see you’ve managed to condition your lovely, lovely locks,” she carried on sarcastically, gesturing to his wet hair and damp skin.
"Thank you,” he replied. “It’s a new one.”
"Yeah, I- I noticed. It’s nice,” said John. His eyes widened. “It smells nice. Obviously. I don’t.. Feel your hair during the night, that’d be weird.”
Sherlock eyes narrowed amusedly. “Is that a fact.”
For God’s sake, John thought to himself. He just called you painfully common and you’re still acting like some fan. He rolled his lips with a stony resolve, forcing himself to keep eye contact.
Sherlock faltered slightly.
Mariana watched. “Hello.”
The detective calmly tore his eyes away at the sound of her voice. “Besides. That.. That experiment was boring. I finished it. Would you like to know the results?”
She glared at him. “Does it have anything to do with human remains?”
“Well. Yes.”
“Then no.” She turned to John. “I thought we could go for a drink. You know, to remind you two why you’re still living together.”
He sat up straight, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment as he thrummed his fingers against the desk. “Er, yeah, sure, once I finish these shoutouts.”
“Okay, great. We’ll leave in ten minutes. Sherlock, are you coming?”
The detective seemed to debate this offer intensely - his thick brows furrowing, tanned cheeks hollowing and grey eyes slightly narrowing until he finally said, “Of course I would.”
“Perfect,” she replied light-heartedly. “Let’s go.”
As Mariana began to leave the room, Sherlock followed cautiously, still deep in thought. “I can’t strongly recommend this line of work to you if you are unable to converse about human remains, Mrs Hudson.”
“Hey!” she held open the door with her foot and gestured for him to leave first. “My job is to answer emails, help pay the rent and send out the merch. Not to look at, or talk about, human remains..”
Her voice faded as they left the room and the door creaked shut.
John let out a gentle sigh and swivelled back to face his laptop. “Right, let’s see…” he opened up the tab that he had previously tried to hide from Mariana. He frowned. “Hang on. Why’s the footage so long– Oh, shit, I’ve been recording this entire time!”
*
The pub was relatively busy with a constant metronome of the door languidly swaying open and shut and the gentle hum of others’ conversations - cushioned only by the soothing tang of refills that glided down their throats in an attempt to ground.
In the search for a small table, Mariana had left the men upfront to order the drinks.
“Two pints of bitter and a gin and tonic, please,” called John as he leaned over the bar with a squint to tune out the overly repetitive pop music.
“Yeah alright, mate. Be a bit because it’s just me today.”
“No worries. Ta,” he scratched the top of his head and settled back into the stool.
Sherlock wasn’t sitting. In fact, he rather awkwardly stood beside John as they waited for their drinks - his posture perfect, his stance unnervingly still. There was a grim (and awfully heavy) twist in the pit of his stomach. He knew that he had somehow, in some way, upset John, but he couldn’t put a finger on why. He gazed at the doctor as he thrummed his fingers against the countertop, the reflective surface and soft lights casting a warm glow against his skin.
“Well..” he began, his deep voice cutting through the obnoxious music.
John glanced at him. “What?”
Ah, thought Sherlock. He’s still upset. (Angry? Flattered?) “It’s incomplete, but would you like to read it?”
“Do I want to read an essay about how I’m painfully common? Erm, let me think,” he tilted his head sarcastically. “No, I’m alright mate. Besides, if it’s about me, what more could I possibly want to know?”
“Actually, I’m positive that I know more about you than you do.”
“Yeah, you probably do- What? No,” he shook his head annoyedly. “Forget it. I don’t want to read your bloody essay that’s about how I’m- I’m so painfully common.”
Sherlock’s face scrunched up. “Why are you so obsessed over that phrasing?”
“Because-!” John stopped himself. His lips pursed into a thin line and his eyes softened.
He frowned. The detective tried to use all his innate and learned deductive reasoning to try to understand - he even attempted to reflect on the ‘social etiquette' intervention he had been forced to have with Mrs Hudson last week. But it was all too much: the torturous music (to which he regretted not having brought his ear defenders), John’s uncharacteristic indifference, his lack of knowledge.
Their intense gaze seemed to make John freeze up, his navy eyes unable to pull away, unable to portray the anger his voice lamely attempted to convey. The warm, soft lights reflected into his eyes, illuminating them into a brighter, saturated tone that made Sherlock forget about the (god-awful) twist in his stomach. They were beautiful, Sherlock thought simply. (He was beautiful.)
“It’s-” he leaned his elbows on the countertop and ran his hands over his flushed face. “It’s fine. Seriously, just forget it, it’s fine.”
Sherlock cautiously opened his mouth to speak. “You don’t–”
“Here you guys go,” the bartender slid forward the three drinks.
“Thanks,” said John politely, juggling the three glasses into his hands without asking for help from the detective, who was watching him with a concerned brow etched deep into his skin. “Sherlock. It’s fine, mate.”
He didn’t respond. Instead, he watched John carefully walk through the maze of tables until he found Mariana sitting at the back on her phone. After four seconds of debating with himself, Sherlock turned slightly, pulled out his wallet, silently paid for the drinks and sauntered to the table. (Ignored the churning in his stomach.)
*
An icy wind had been the final push out of Autumn - it had blown away the rusty coloured leaves until the pavements on Baker Street bore nothing but a thin layer of frost.
It had been five days since Sherlock had (mistakenly) revealed the existence of his essay about John and, according to his knowledge, not much had improved in 221B. The doctor was often tucked away in his room, with the excuse of ‘editing the podcast’ slowly fraying and eventually dissolving into just ‘being tired’. Mariana had taken it upon herself to become an intermediary; she waded through the flood of emotions that had drowned both of the men by attempting to speak to them both privately and also sweetening some (rather bitter) messages that they had for one another before delivering them. Sherlock had, of course, seen right through her considerate attempts at cushioning John’s colourful insults, but he didn’t say anything no matter how uncharacteristic her edits were. (He sometimes wanted to tell her to read the essay he wrote about John so that she could learn how to properly speak on his behalf but, in case he accidentally offended her, he kept those thoughts to himself.)
However, when the orders for the podcast’s merchandise started piling up, Mariana had no choice but to plant her focus on packaging and sending them away. And when that happened, his (dreadful) stomachache had gotten worse.
The silence was killing him. (John was killing him.)
By midday, Sherlock had curled up into the sofa, his legs tucked close and arms wrapped around his chest with his fingertips pressing against the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. His eyes were shut and his face was uncomfortably pressed against a pillow, but he didn’t move. (If he did, the texture of the pillow would send a cold shower of shivers through his body.) Instead he resorted to taking deep, levelled breaths - unconsciously counting his heart’s BPM. (Always calculating, moving. Even when he didn’t want to.)
He had successfully managed to tune everyone and everything that made even the slightest of noise. He had been idle like that since 9.17am, so disturbingly still that, after the first hour, Mariana had to check if he was still breathing. He was.
During the forty-second round of unconsciously monitoring his heart’s BPM, an aggressive vibration had interrupted his counting. Sherlock opened his eyes and, for a moment, he stopped breathing.
Tried to ignore it.
Couldn’t.
(Always subconsciously craving the thrill of possibility.)
He unfolded his limbs, pulled his head away from the pillow with a shiver and sat up. His phone vibrated again.
Sherlock leaned over to the coffee table and picked it up.
Lestrade Says You Weren’t Answering Your Phone. Apparently There’s Something You’d Want To See At NSY
Interested?
It was John. (Oh God, John.)
His fingers hovered over the keyboard.
Are you?
There was a pause. (Suddenly his BPM was significantly higher than it was 16 seconds ago.)
Maybe
Sherlock was used to the quiet. Most of the time he craved it. A flattened wavelength was his ideal; it opened doors to his thoughts, germinated possibilities and carefully constructed intricate experiments. But this was entirely different:
John never said ‘maybe’ to the possibility of getting to play audience and watch his consulting detective work, to record the perfect material for his podcast and prepare for a rush of adrenaline at any given moment. He never (never) said ‘maybe’ to the idea of working with Sherlock.
The detective switched off his phone, stood up and straightened his jumper.
A gentle string of footsteps told Sherlock that Mariana had walked in. The familiar, .2-second high-pitched creak of a door also told him that she had just left John’s room.
“I assume you were talking about me,” he began plainly, entirely avoiding eye-contact as he strode over to the desk by the window and picked up his ear defenders.
“Why do you assume that?” she lightly asked, setting down a pack of diet Cokes on the kitchen table before beginning to gather her fluffy curls up into a high ponytail.
“What else would you talk about?”
“I..” Mariana hummed unconvincingly, shifting her weight from one foot to the next. “We talk about lots of things.”
He grabbed his coat from his armchair and shrugged it on. “Like?”
“Hm?”
“What sort of things do you talk about?”
She glanced down and wrapped her cardigan around herself comfortingly. “Like.. Beer. And Archie. Oh! And lots of podcast stuff, which we know you don’t really enjoy, so–”
“Scotland Yard has called. There’s something that they’d like me to see.”
“Okay,” she smiled. “Yeah, that’s great! You’ve been wanting a case for a while.”
“Yes.” Sherlock’s eyes wandered anywhere but in the direction of Mariana. “Will John be accompanying me? For the podcast stuff. ”
“Er, yeah.”
The voice came from behind Mariana. She took a step to the side to reveal John stepping into the living room with one shoe on his (left) foot and the other in his (right) hand. He bent down and slipped the other one on calmly, his face void of any indifference he had been holding against the detective for the last few days. “Got my mic all charged up,” he patted the small clip-on attached to his shirt. “Just in case.”
Sherlock eyed him carefully. “That’s good.”
It was silent. (His stomach churned.)
“Let us leave,” he said plainly, brushing straight past Mariana and John and ignoring the way their eyes met.
After he left, John sighed, leaning against the doorframe. “See?” he whispered.
Mariana shook her head. “Remember what I said, just–”
“Try again, yeah, I know,” he paused. “Sorry, Mariana- No, yeah, you’re right.”
“I hope so,” she placed a hand on his shoulder and guided him out the living room. “Now go, before he thinks we’re talking about him.”
“Again.”
***
There was a gentle knock on the door.
“Mariana?”
“Yep, it’s me,” she poked her head through with a smile. “Sherlock’s still sleeping on the couch. How are you feeling?”
“Yeah, I’m alright,” John sat up on his bed as she walked in. He politely turned off his phone and focused on her. “What’s up?”
“Three things. One, we’re out of diet Coke.”
“Ah,” John clambered off his bed and pulled open his wardrobe doors. He reached to the bottom, pulled out a pack and handed it to Mariana.
“You keep packs of mini diet Cokes in your wardrobe?” she asked quizzically.
“Don’t tell Sherlock.”
Intrigued, she peered into his wardrobe. “What else do you keep in there?”
“Pop tarts. Only the good ones, though.”
“Huh, I’ll keep that in mind the next time I’m locked in the flat by myself,” she joked.
“What was the second thing?”
“Oh, yeah, you know the ‘thank you’ cards for the merch that spelled your name wrong?”
“How could I. Jonk is a pretty big mistake to make,” he deadpanned. “I mean, whose name could possibly be Jonk?”
She shrugged. “Yeah, well, I have finally used them all up in our orders!”
“Finally. But now that means that fifty of our fans have a card that says, ‘Thanks again! From Sherlock, Mariana, Archie and Jonk’.”
“Well, I’ve just ordered another one-hundred cards with the correct spelling of your name.”
“Thanks, Mariana. Honestly though, the guy on the phone was ridiculous, I even spelled my name out for him! Y’know, the same, painfully common name that everyone knows. ”
She glared at him. “John.”
He sighed, running his hands over his face. “I know,” he mumbled. He looked up. “I know.”
“Seriously,” she lowered her voice to a gentle tone. “Why is this bothering you so much?”
“I-” he sighed, closing his wardrobe and trying to change the subject. “What.. Was the third thing you wanted to talk to me about?”
“It was about you still not talking to Sherlock!”
“Ah.”
“So?” she asked firmly.
There was a certainty, an air to Mariana that John had admired since they first crossed paths - always headstrong in her resolutions and cautious enough to ground the men’s often impulsive and derelict decisions. She also always saw right through him. (Both of them.)
John sat down on the edge of his bed. Mariana leaned her back flat against the wall as a nod for him to talk.
“I don’t know, okay? Yes. What he said upset me.”
“He always makes those kinds of comments, though. I mean, to me, as well. You’ve never really reacted this way before,” she commented, hugging the pack of drinks close. “Did he.. Perhaps say something else to you? At the pub?”
“No,” he shook his head. “That’s just the worst bit, isn’t it. That is all he said - painfully common and I just.. Lost it. Like some- Some bloody, stupid.. Stupid child. I don’t know why I did, he’s right, but. What he says means something to me, Mariana. What he thinks. I mean, what makes me different from the other six Johns in the vicinity?”
She narrowed her eyes. “I don’t actually think there are six Johns in Baker Street. We’d definitely know.”
“Yeah, but that’s the thing, isn’t it,” he replied gently. “He’s such a cocky git that you can’t tell if he means half the stuff he says.”
“And yet…”
“And yet.. I still believe him anyway. Always. Why do I do that, Mariana?”
There was a glint in her eyes as she watched the doctor debate with himself. “Are you still ghosting him online?”
“No. Well, yes, I have been. But I texted him today. Lestrade says there’s something she wants us to see, and I haven’t had much content for the podcast in a while, so…”
“You’re going to go with him.”
“Yeah.”
There was a pause.
Mariana stood up straight. “You need to talk to him, John. He needs you, no matter what he says. Your silence won’t help him understand. Give him another chance.”
“Yeah, you’re right. Thanks, Mariana.”
They shared a soft, genuine smile and she began to leave the room, only pausing for a moment. “Oh, John.”
He glanced back. “Yeah?”
She seemed to construct her next words carefully. “Try telling him how you feel. I think that’s what he needs. What both of you need.”
John gazed at her, contemplating what she said with a soft frown. He eventually nodded.

Not to shit on Phoenix and his little quilt of ragtag teens but I'm just saying 221b literally call each other siblings and have an arc of accepting each other as their real family and Phoenix had to employ Apollo to get the dude to tolerate him.
Found Family Tournament Round 2 Part 9 Group 42
Propaganda and further images under the cut
Wright Anything Agency (& Company): Phoenix & Trucy Wright, Apollo Justice, Maya Fey, Miles Edgeworth, Pearl Fey, Ema Skye, Kay Faraday & Sebastian Debeste
221B Fam: Ryunosuke Naruhodo, Susato Mikotoba, Herlock Sholmes, Iris Wilson, Wagahai (& Gina Lestrade, Yujin Mikotoba, Kazuma Asogi, Barok van Zieks)
Wright Anything Agency (& Company):
THEY MEAN THE WORLDDDDD TO MEEEEEE for some reason a lot of people in the fandom don't play Ace Attorney 5 which is fair since it's kind of messy BUT. BUT. IT INTRODUCES ATHENA AND DOES SOOOO MUCH FOR THE WRIGHT ANYTHING AGENCY. In AA4 we learn that Trucy Wright made the Wright Talent Agency into the Wright Anything Agency in order to bring Apollo in as a lawyer when before it was just her (a magician) and her adopted father Phoenix (a poker player). and AA5 is all about Athena joining and Apollo learning how to trust her, at least it is to ME. they're so gooddddd aaaaaaa like you've got Phoenix and Trucy who are weirdos who love to scheme and you've got Apollo their longsuffering guy who deals with it all, and Phoenix is the mentor... and then Athena comes in and she has a lot of light and determination and trauma (just like the rest of them lol) and she's SO determined and I like her a lot!! And Trucy is my favorite and Phoenix cares about her SO much but he also has his other found family in the Feys!!!!!! Mia dies in the first game but her ghost stays with Phoenix and her sister/cousin Maya and Pearl are SO IMPORTANT TO HIM he loves them so much that's his sisters to me ;-; he would do anything for them and Trucy and he's growing as a mentor to Apollo and Athena too as the game progress... They don't write them all perfectly but they sure do a lot of things I like :) also feel free to split this up into their Wright Anything Agency or Phoenix + the Feys or Phoenix + Trucy if you need to I won't mind I just love AA's found family a lot
Picture this. You are a attorney in your mid 20s and somehow find yourself surrounded by weird little girls with every case you take on. You officially adopt one but really, all of them are either sisters or daughters to you. Especially your loud, burger-loving lesbian sister. Your childhood friend turned rival turned lover, who has a whip-wielding adoptive sister of his own, goes on a series of investigations while messing around with a furry for a couple of weeks and returns with two 17 year old children, a thieving lesbian and a child with a narcissistic murderer for a father who should've kept him back in school a few grades. Your lover has each of them under an arm, and they are appended to your stable of weird little girls but are very much hidden in the back. Then you find out that your daughter, the official one, has a 22yo trans half-brother with a musical diva mother and was half raised as a prince in Khura'in, so you divorce his boss (who is not your official lover, you just had a weird thing for a while when you were in your alcoholic phase, maybe while your actual lover was still messing around with the furry) very publicly while sending him to prison for murdering your daughter's father. Oh, but you have been disbarred, so you make your daughter's son send his own boss to prison, by planting false evidence on him. Of course the young man punches you in the face. Needless to say he works for you for a couple of years and never finds out that he's related to your daughter because that would require a straightforward conversation, now wouldn't it?
only one of them has never been arrested. only two of them arent lawyers. theyre all gay
Theyre very weird and misteruous and kinda fucked up a bit and they were through a lot but phoenix did his best and trucy well she's still just a kid but oh she's trying so fucking hard and always trying to wear a smile and it's breaking my heart the two of them. Also theyre weird i already said that but let me say it again they are WEIRD. and we love them<3 (the ace attorney fandom)
221B Fam:
I dont have much to say i am just constantly rotating them in my mind BUT i have to say the the last image i attached contains like MAJOR spoilers lol i just wanted the canon images in there
Ace Attorney has some wonderful found families, but this one's particularly special because of their circumstances. An exchange student and his unhinged weirdgirl assistant from Japan feeling so out of place in turn-of-the-century Great Britain, yet finding a completely batshit insane family during their time there...it's just so <3 <3 <3 Also Ryunosuke calls them "the greatest family in the world" and it makes my heart happy. Also they commit lots of crimes
#all jokes lmao i just grovel a wee bit more over 221b than waa#mostly cuz their actual found family dynamic doesnt shy away from the topic as much as waa#ryuu is saint amongst men to go through everything that is herlock sholmes and still consider him family#waa does have the benefit of having the funniest slow burn gay dads im history#but 221b have the coolest gay dads in history#also yuujin mikotoba case closed sorry

Sherlock existed there, motionless, only turning his head once he heard a mumble, felt a shuffle, a rift in what was previous. “Ah, so you’ve awoken? Good timing.”
Or, Sherlock, Watson, and Valentine's Day.

Favorite Johnlock Fics (BBC Sherlock)
I went on a bit of a fic-reading spree this spring, and this list of favorites is the result! There are many other fics that I’ve enjoyed reading, but these are the ones that I’ve really loved for one reason or another.
I’ve tagged the authors whose tumblrs I could find. If that’s you, thank you so much for sharing your writing with us. If your work is on here, you wrote something that I really treasure.
1. A River Without Banks, by Chryse. E, 203,286 words. Starts right after Season 3. A mix of Sherlock’s perspective, John’s perspective, and the perspectives of other characters. Sherlock-focused for the first half.
Author’s summary: “‘You love this, being Sherlock Holmes. He had once. When had it all gone so wrong?”
This is my absolute favorite. The author’s characterization of Sherlock is amazingly accurate, and Sherlock’s character development over the course of the story is breathtakingly executed and moving. The plot is fantastic and takes you on a page-turning emotional roller coaster, especially for about the first half of the story. I was also continually impressed by how many details from the show and references to earlier parts of the fic the author was able to weave in throughout while still keeping the story creative and original. Most importantly, though, I love this fic for the message that it sends about Sherlock and John’s love, which is a far more positive message than the one that the actual show settled upon in the end. I’m grateful that we have this version of their love story, and, personally, I like to pretend that this was Season 4 and how the show ended.
2. Another Country, by Chryse. E, 67,414 words. Starts right after the end of TAB. Sherlock’s perspective.
Sherlock spends one month and three days under house arrest in 221B, trying to get clean from the drugs, track down the new Moriarty, and figure out what the hell is going on between him and John.
Another fantastic work by Chryse. This author really gets Sherlock’s character, and once again the characterization of Sherlock is spot-on and convincing. There are a few other elements that also make this a compelling story, including smart use of minor characters, a solid central mystery, and a complicated relationship between Sherlock and John that includes a pretty convincing post-Season-3 version of John. Excellent.
3. walk through ghosts, by @augustbird. M, 6,125 words. Written between Seasons 2 and 3. Sherlock’s perspective.
Author’s summary: “The thing is: Sherlock thought that the two of them would have forever to figure it out.”
This is the saddest fic I have ever read, and so beautifully written. The author captures Season 2 Sherlock’s character perfectly; the fact that this story feels so real is what makes it devastating. The day after I read this, I couldn’t stop thinking about it and walked around with my heart physically aching in my chest.
4. Nature and Nurture, by @earlgreytea68. M, 203,273 words. Set sometime after Season 2. Alternates between John’s and Sherlock’s perspectives, but mostly told from John’s.
The British government clones Sherlock. He and John decide to raise the baby.
A true fandom classic. The premise sounds super cracky, but somehow it really works. This fic is surprisingly serious at times, but overall it is the cutest and funniest thing I have ever read in my life. Basically 200,000+ words of Sherlock and John being adorable gay fathers together and working through some feelings, with line-by-line some of the most hilarious dialogue ever. The five accompanying ficlets that the author wrote as short follow-ups are also worth checking out; my favorites were School (T, 4,753 words) and The Radovljica Apicultural Museum (T, 4,540 words).
5. To a Friend Who Sent Me Roses, by @algyswinburne. E, 16,147 words. Set sometime after Season 4 (but ignores TFP, as we all should lol). Sherlock’s perspective.
Author’s summary: “Five times Sherlock is mistaken for John’s partner and Rosie’s father, and one time it isn’t a mistake.”
This fic is sad, sweet, and hot by turns. Absolutely lovely to read in so many ways, and with so many great details and lines. I think this story offers convincing portrayals of what Sherlock’s and John’s characters might be like after it all and how they might finally get together. This and A River Without Banks are my favorite alternate endings to the show. Beautiful!
6. for all that bitter delights will sour, by @darcylindbergh. E, 9,585 words. Set sometime after Season 3. Sherlock’s perspective.
John initiates a sexually and emotionally abusive relationship with Sherlock.
The second saddest fic I have read. I would never want what happens in this fic to happen to Sherlock and John, so I don’t exactly recommend it as a Johnlock fic. But as a short story, this is a gem, full of absolutely gorgeous and incredibly moving writing. It depicts difficult themes very deftly, in lines and paragraphs that I had to stop to read over and over. I appreciate this as an emotionally powerful and thought-provoking piece of writing inspired by Sherlock, so for that reason I think it deserves to be on this list.
7. The Ground Beneath Your Feet, by Chryse. E, 68,803 words. Set after Season 3, but as if the last two minutes of HLV never happened. “The plane went on to Eastern Europe, and this is what came after.” John’s perspective.
This fic is pretty dark; the author describes it as “a PTSD story in which John was wholly devoted to Sherlock.” I don’t love it quite as much as the other two fics by Chryse that I’ve listed here, but that’s mostly because those two are just so amazing! I still really enjoyed this one. It was wonderful to see a kind and caring version of John emerge out of Season 3, and the story had several memorable moments, including one particularly nail-biting scene. I also really liked seeing John and Mycroft become friends as they bonded over their shared concern for Sherlock.
8. The Adventures of a Single Girl in London (Plus a Consulting Detective), by @earlgreytea68. M, 32,913 words. Set soon after Season 3. Alternates between different characters perspectives.
Bored with life at her new cottage in Sussex, Janine returns to London and moves in with Sherlock at 221B. Hilarity, heartbreak, and eventual Johnlock ensue.
This is a Season 3 fix-it fic that features an absolutely lovely friendship between Sherlock and Janine and the best version of Janine that I’ve come across in a fic. Sherlock is vulnerable and sweet, John is an absolute idiot, Janine is perfect, and the last two chapters just make me scream. Great stuff.
And that’s it for now! If you know of any other fics that I might like based on the above, I’d be happy to hear about them, so drop me a line!
Happy reading 😊

Podcasts To Listen To If You Like OFMD
Today is the anniversary of the finale of Our Flag Means Death season 2. One whole year without our favorite pirates :( But if you miss OFMD as much as I do, I have some podcast recommendations I think you'd enjoy!
If you want more queer pirates:
Trice Forgotten
Trice Forgotten is a found-family, pirating adventure. Alestes puts her head down working as a merchant, couriering deliveries and carrying travelers to destinations across the seas. Only, her travelers gradually become permanent crewmates, until she realises her ship has become a floating museum, laboratory, vault of repatriated ‘treasures’ and chef’s kitchen. After spending most of her life with the understanding that nothing changes, no matter how hard you fight, Alestes is faced with a choice: Will she use her new network of allies to build safe harbour and potentially a future for her new community, or will she once again put her head down and drown in her sea of excuses…
Queer neurodivergent pirates of color! Found family! Homoerotic sword fights! What else do you want? (And they even talk about OFMD in one of the Below Decks episodes!)
The Ballad of Anne & Mary
It's 1721, and London is abuzz with news of notorious pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, currently languishing in Newgate Prison. It’s the perfect time for debt-ridden journalist Nathaniel Mist to exploit the public appetite and ghost-write a sensational (and hopefully best-selling) history of pirates. But as the balladeers and gossips on the streets of London build myths around the blood-thirsty, perverse lady pirates, Mist is forced to reckon with the real Bonny & Read… Featuring musical sensation Christina Bianco, actress and comedian Sooz Kempner, Hamilton star Karl Queensborough, drag legend Le Gateau Chocolat, and more.
If you can't get enough of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, listen to this podcast musical about them!
If you want more queer comedies:
Welcome To Night Vale
Welcome To Night Vale is a twice-monthly podcast in the style of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale, featuring local weather, news, announcements from the Sheriff's Secret Police, mysterious lights in the night sky, dark hooded figures with unknowable powers, and cultural events. Turn on your radio and hide.
Okay, it's a horror comedy and can be creepy at times, but it's also one of the few shows that have made me laugh as much as OFMD.
Starship Q Star
When a space agency sends the “first all woman and non-binary crew” on a blatant PR mission to Mars, they inadvertently end up the last six humans in the universe. Lead by Co-Captains (and exes) Aurelia and Sim, Starship Q Star follows this madcap crew on their quest across the galaxy in search of a new home… which is basically one hilarious mishap after the other.
I suppose if you found the absolutely two perfect ex-girlfriends and sent them to Mars, then they could potentially… co-captain?
If you want more queer historical comedies:
Fawx & Stallion
London, 1889. When the residents of 221B Baker Street leave town for the weekend to solve one of their most famous cases, no one is left to clear a poor housekeeper’s name of a crime she didn’t commit. Well, no one except for their neighbors at 224B…
Tonally, this is probably the closest to OFMD. I started this podcast yesterday and fell in love with it immediately. If you like OFMD and Sherlock Holmes, please check out Fawx & Stallion!
The Kingmaker Histories
On the 19th of February, 1911, in the Valorian Socialist Republic, an assistant tailor named Colette Geise experienced a migraine that ruined her life. This is a historical account of what happened next. THE KINGMAKER HISTORIES is a steampunk weird fiction podcast about being gay and doing crime, brought to you by the freaks who brought you Less Is Morgue.
Alternate history + magic + comedy + queerness. Do I need to say more?
If you want more (queer) rom-coms:
Me and AU
When Kate “ACunningPlan” Cunningham sparks up an online friendship with a fellow fanfiction writer it seems like the perfect distraction from a summer stuck in her hometown of Kamloops, B.C., not to mention the coming terrors of her final year of university and the Real Adult Future beyond. (Seriously, please don’t mention them.) After all, Hella--Enchanted is funny, smart and writes canon-divergent werewolf fic like no one else. She’s everything a fandom could ask for. But… what if she’s everything Kate could ask for, too?
Me and AU is not only an adorable sapphic rom-com, but also a love letter to fandom! Go listen to this, it's so cute!
Life With LEO(h)
A sci-fi(ish) romantic comedy podcast starring a repressed lawyer, a criminal client, a pesky sister and her fiance, an infuriatingly sexy coworker, and an android in the mood for love. Jeanine Bell is a robotics intelligence lawyer whose laser focus on her career has come at the expense of her romantic and social lives. After successfully keeping AI genius Penelope Lane out of prison, Jeanine receives the gift of LEO(h), an android with Synthetic Sentience. LEO(h) is Loving, Empathetic, Optimistic, and (only sorta) helpful. He's programmed to love Jeanine. He’s also very, very illegal.
I'm only two episodes in and already so invested in this story! Jeanine and LEO(h) are absolutely adorable.
(Note: as far as I know, the main romance isn't queer, but there are other queer characters in the show.)
If you want more queer found families:
Hello From The Hallowoods
Darker than your dreams, and farther North than you remember, there is a forest where life and death meet… Come walk between the black pines! In this award-winning queer fiction podcast, a cosmic narrator follows the increasingly connected residents of the forest at the end of the world. It's a bittersweet story that explores queer identity, horror genre tropes, and finding hope in humanity's last moments.
Did I only add HFTH to the list because it's my all-time favorite podcast and I want more people to listen to it? Maybe. But I also genuinely think that if you like OFMD, you are going to love some of these characters. Check out my fandom manifesto if you want to learn more!
Starfall
Starfall is a fantasy audio drama about the adventures of the Carouvel Traveling Acting Troupe - a theatre troupe that uses magical items to create illusions for their shows as they move around the Falstenian Empire. The story begins as the troupe is joined by Leona, a young warrior with a mysterious past and even more mysterious powers. With their new guardian in tow, the troupe traverses the continent, encountering the dangers of humans, fae, and greater forces alike, all while still trying to put on a good show.
Remember Stede's fuckery play in S1E6? Now you can listen to a fantasy theatre troupe put on magical plays! How cool is that?
If you want more of the cast:
Kisses in the Dark
Against the bright lights of Blackpool, a supernatural killer is at work and a dark and dangerous love affair begins… A sinister, disturbingly romantic seven part podcast drama written by Marty Ross (BBC’s Catch My Breath & Ghost Zone and Audible’s The Darkwater Bride) and starring Con O’Neill (Chernobyl, The Batman) and Rhiannon Clements. A contemporary Gothic horror tale set against a background of life on the narrow edge between Pleasure Beach and wild cold sea, between secret desire and a deadly evil. Also starring, Kyle Rowe, Pamela Mayoss, Steven Gidwaney, Patrick Price & Ryan Clayton.
Con O'Neill plays one of the main characters!
What Will Be Here?
In What Will Be Here?, five friends send a rocket to space with a collection of recordings on it that document the world’s decline, the stories they want to tell, and their efforts in building this rocket to get their message to the stars. They wonder what their world will have become by the time their message is listened to. At its core, this show is about living and creating when things feel pointless. It's a story that came out of the pandemic, and the landscape in which this story was written and produced greatly influenced how it turned out. What Will Be Here? is set on earth 200 years in the future, where large-scale crises are fully normalized. But despite the bleak backdrop, this story is one of hope - of overcoming challenges, of making things that might be temporary, but also things that might be launched into space and continue on forever.
Vico Ortiz plays one of the main characters!
Dungeon Masters
Dungeon Masters takes a behind-the-curtain look into the world of Dungeons & Dragons, told through the lenses of the creator of the game, Gary Gygax, played by Wil Wheaton and of private investigator, William Dear, played by Jon Hamm, a swashbuckling tough guy in 1979. Gygax guides the audience through this incredible true story as our Dungeon Master, as we follow Dear on his quest to find Dallas Egbert, a Michigan State student, who supposedly disappeared in the steam tunnels under his university while enacting a real-life version of D&D. What Dear encounters on this journey and ultimately discovers, defies all expectations, and changes the culture as we know it.
Kristian Nairn plays one of the main characters!
The Diaries of Netovicius the Vampire
Neto is an artist first, an immortal vampire second, but for now he's being kicked out of his Beacon Hill apartment in Boston Mass. That's where we begin, but more than a year into this audio-series I can't believe the journey Neto, and me, the creator have been on. But that's a longer story than I can get into here. For now, I hope there is something in this audio-series for you. It's about vampires, but ultimately it's about recovery, from trauma, from alcoholism, even from cults. It asks: Does time really heal all wounds? Featuring VAs known for Valorant, Diablo IV & Overwatch
Written and performed by Hugo Pierre Martin!
The Cryptid Factor
Three best buddies - Rhys Darby, Dan Schreiber, and Leon 'Buttons' Kirkbeck bring you The Cryptid Factor - a podcast dedicated to all things weird that are yet to be defined by science. Since 2008 they have passionately (and often awkwardly) been discussing 'cryptids' and monsters like Yeti, Chupacabra, Bigfoot and Nessie - as well as weird news of the world, UFO's, Time travellers, robots and space stuff. Though they take these pseudosciences as seriously as they can, they struggle to take themselves seriously at all. Hosted by comedian and actor Rhys Darby, star of top rating podcast 'No Such Thing as a Fish' Dan Schreiber - and Pulling it all together is their best friend, 'Buttons'. If anything goes wrong, it is probably his fault.
Rhys Darby is one of the hosts!
Date My Abuelita, First!
From Executive Producer Wilmer Valderrama comes a dating show that proves abuelita knows best! Host Vico Ortiz alongside our resident abuelita, Liliana are ready to meet their match! Three single contestants will compete for a date with one lucky guest. Through speed-dating rounds, hilarious games, wildly silly and genuinely heartfelt introspections, and grandmotherly love, one contestant will either be a step closer to love or be sent back to the apps. Abuelita holds all the cupid power, so let the chispas fly!
Vico Ortiz is one of the hosts!

Sherlock fandom.
Temporary Stupefaction
Sherlock pulls up the collar of his coat to protect his neck from the icy wind. The night is dark and foggy. Gloomy. It fits his mood.
John was on a date when Lestrade called with a nasty murder. Sherlock texted and even called John, but he didn’t pick up, nor answered the texts.
It had been an extraordinary case. John would’ve loved it, despite how easily Sherlock solved it. The cases were no fun when John was absent.
Colourful leaves are twirling around his feet in Regent’s Park. Sherlock is desperate to get home to the warmth of 221B. He forgot to bring his gloves.
John wasn’t there to remind him.
Still, Sherlock is hesitating to leave the park and walk the short distance to Baker Street. The flat is probably empty and cold if John’s still out. Perhaps he’s got a leg over and will sleep at that woman’s place. Sherlock is thankful that John never brings any of his girlfriends to the flat.
Small blessings.
The wind and his soon frostbitten hands, decide for him, and Sherlock approaches the black door. When he looks up at the windows, he stops abruptly. Golden light from the lamps and something incandescent, tells him that John is home and that he’s lit the fire. Suddenly John’s figure appears in the window. He stands with his back to Sherlock and he’s gesticulating wildly with his arms.
John never does that.
He’s clearly talking to someone. Sherlock checks his watch. Nearly midnight. Too late for a visit from Mrs. Hudson. Lestrade drove home at the same time Sherlock left the Yard, Molly never visits them, and Mycroft is out of the country as far as Sherlock knows.
Who can it be and why is John so agitated?
He needs more data, and hurries to find his keys and locks himself in as silently as he can. Sherlock tiptoes up the seventeen steps, avoiding the creaky one. John’s voice is loud, but the words are muffled by the door.
Sherlock stops on the landing to eavesdrop before deciding how to proceed.
“How did she know, hm? I’ve only dated her two times.”
There’s a long silence. Sherlock reaches for the doorknob but stops when John speaks again.
“What do you mean I talk about him all the time? He’s the person I deal with the most. It’s only natural, don’t you think?”
What on earth is John talking about? And more importantly; who is he talking to? The responses from the unknown guest, are apparently so low that even Sherlock’s brilliant hearing can’t perceive it.
“I’m not gay, remember!”
Ah, John is talking about Sherlock. His heart cracks every time John utters those words. He startles when John’s voice quivers.
“How did you know that I’m bi? I’ve never told a soul. And before you say Sholto, nothing happened, okay!”
John’s voice rises again when he mentions his former superior officer. Sherlock has always wondered about their relationship. His stomach is in uproar. John has just admitted that he’s bisexual while discussing Sherlock.
What does that mean?
Sherlock can hear that John is pacing, but he’s stopped talking. He opens the door as carefully as possible and dares to look. John seems lost in his own head. His hands are buried in his hair. He looks a bit like Sherlock does when he’s despairing about a case or useless yarders.
A quick survey of the room stupefies him. It’s empty apart from John.
Who the hell has he been talking to?
“Do we have an invisible guest, John?” he asks softly.
John turns to him, his face ashen. He stutters, then blushes.
“Sh…Sher…Sherlock! What are you doing here?”
“I live here,” Sherlock offers with a smirk.
John snorts and starts to chuckle.
“Yeah, you do. Sorry. I was just…”
“You were talking to…”
Sherlock doesn’t finish the sentence but waves a hand, indicating for John to fill in the blanks.
“No one,” John mumbles, his smile gone.
“I heard you,” Sherlock coaxes, eager to solve this mystery.
He hangs up his coat and walks to the fireplace to warm his hands.
“You forgot your gloves again,” John tuts.
“Brilliant deduction, John,” Sherlock quips.
He rubs his palms together and expects John to reprimand him further, but the flat is deadly silent.
“I was talking to Harry,” John finally says behind him.
Sherlock turns so fast he almost knocks John over. His eyes evidently show the horror he feels.
Harry Watson, John’s twin sister, has been dead for six years.
Before Sherlock can analyse this baffling information further, John grips his hands, warming them efficiently. Sherlock momentarily closes his eyes to revel in the sensation. Warmth seeps through him in a flash and sets in his chest like a burning flame. When he opens his eyes, John is gazing up at him with a look Sherlock’s seen before, but not often. It’s fond and hungry. Normally, it disappears within seconds, but this time…
“Sherlock?” John whispers.
“Are you a psychic, John?”
Shit! He didn’t mean to say that out loud.
“Just a vivid imagination, but who the hell knows? Me and Harry’s bond has always been strong. I don’t think I’ve told you, but as children we sometimes communicated telepathically.”
“You are an enigma, John Watson,” Sherlock murmurs.
Sherlock is completely warm now, and decides to be brave. He pulls John to him by his hands, guiding them around his waist. After he has released them, he lets his own hands cradle the back of John’s head and bends down. When he’s close enough to feel John’s breath on his face, he looks into John’s eyes to get confirmation. They are closed, so Sherlock bends down further and kisses each eyelid, before he finds John’s cheeks, forehead, chin and at long last, his lips.
When they part for air. John smiles and tells his sister to kindly leave them alone.

“The word you’re looking for is ‘transitioned’,” Sherlock snapped at the new crime scene tech, who was clearly as opinionated as he was ignorant.
“Huh?” challenged the moron. Moronically.
“‘Transgender’ is an adjective,” John chipped in. “Like ‘gay’ or ‘black’. You wouldn’t describe Elton John as ‘gayed’, would you? Or Idris Elba as ‘blacked’?”
“He might,” muttered Sherlock, squinting at the piece of debris she’d retrieved from the victim’s pocket.
“If someone moves from living as one gender to living as another, they are said to have ‘transitioned’,” John persevered, with the air of one who is more than happy to escalate should a verbal defence of his flatmate prove ineffective. “‘Transgendered’ is not a word. Any more than ‘gayed’ is. Got it?”
The moron opened his mouth.
John looked at him.
The mouth closed.
“Good,” said John.

“How is it so simple for you, to accept me as a girl?” Sherlock demanded moodily, as the cab took them home. “I’m not exactly a model of femininity.”
John shrugged. “Well, my default is to respect people, so that’s a good start,” he dissembled, turning to the window.
But the moment was there in front of him… Did he dare?
He swallowed, heart beating in his throat, but courage had never been John Watson’s weakness.
“And I’ve never been attracted to boys.”

Five Fics Friday: August 2/24
Happy August Long Weekend to my Canadian friends, and horrah it's Friday to everyone else!!! Let's start off this weekend with these great fanfics!!! Enjoy!
RECENT MFLs
Come Home With Me by AlwaysJohn (NR, 525 w., 1 Ch. || Boys in Love, Angst With Happy Ending, Ducks) – A little something to chase away the cobwebs.
On Hold by saintscully (E, 2,686 w., 1 Ch. || Porn Without Plot, Established Relationship, Sherlock's Slutty Dressing Gown) – John is on hold with the bank. Sherlock empties the teapot into the flowers.
Tipping The Scales by BeautifulFiction (T, 3,145+ w., 1/13 Ch. || Fantasy AU || WiP ||Alternate First Meeting, Strangers to Lovers, Merman Sherlock, Soldier John, John POV, Mention of Suicidal Ideation, Dodgy Scientific Ethics, Fictional Military Procedures, Baskerville) – When John is invalided out and left as little more than a glorified security guard in Baskerville, life has never looked so bleak. Will a stranger in need of his help set his life on a new course, or will he lose everything in his effort to help this "Sherlock Holmes"?
Military--kink? by Silvergirl (M, 6,025 w., 2 Ch. || TRF Fix It, Sherlock's Kinks, Preconceptions, Sherlock Does NOT Have a Military Kink, First Kiss, First Time, Happy Ending, Military Inaccuracies) – It’s fanon that Sherlock has a military kink. Well, what if he doesn’t? What if he's always had the opposite? What if he had to get over an instinctive recoil when he realized that a. oh God John was it for him and b. oh fuck he was a soldier? Sherlock has a boatload of preconceptions about military personnel. So when John comes on to him at Angelo’s, he comes out with the “married to my work” line we’ve all regretted ever since. All the prejudices Sherlock had to discard, one by one.
Limitless Ocean by angel-loving-star (M, 150,730+ w., 21/36 Ch. || WIP || Post-TLD / S4 Fix It, Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn, John's PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, Sherlock Whump, Alcohol Abuse, Past Drug Addiction, Fluff, Parentlock, Coming Out, Nightmares, Panic / Anxiety Attacks, Dissociation, Alternating POV, Suicidal Ideation, Self-Harm Ideation, Internalized Homophobia, Closeted John, Angst, Insomnia, Domestics, Cuddling / Snuggling, Gay Sherlock) – Sherlock is recovering from the Culverton Smith case. But there are some things that time or body can't heal. When John and Rosie unexpectedly move back in 221B the day after Sherlock's birthday, nothing is as it used to be. Both he and John are treading on thin ice. It is only a matter of time until the first cracks appear. Until they begin to sink into the freezing waters of the ocean beneath, and are forced to face their demons, each other, and what has been lurking in the dark for far, far too long. Until it is only them, the promise of sky above the surface, and the limitless ocean flooding into their hearts.

Self-Rec Thingy
Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. spread the self-love ❤
Thank you @calaisreno for tagging me!
The Edge of the Sea (fair warning -> WIP, 14/20 chapters, but the whole thing is drafted): Sherlock jumps and John is devastated. John spends the next two years alone, Sherlock doesn't (aka Victor Trevor tags along). Jealous!John, slow burn, complicated relationships, not really a casefic, the focus is more on...agony?
2. Hello You: John helps Sherlock get out of an awkward situation in a pub by pretending to be his boyfriend. Shenanigans ensue. Rom-com vibes, fake relationship, first kiss, the usual antics, funny fluff.
3. Come What May: Thanks to @calaisreno and the May Prompt series, these little 221Bs cover the whole gamut: pining, angst, fluff, parentlock, smutty stuff, etc. MCD in two, cw in the chapter notes.
4. Midnight Plowboy: Sherlock has a secret stash of vintage gay erotica. John finds it and helps him act out his favourite, the eponymous Midnight Plowboy, lol. This is one of...nine? ten? short-ish PWPs I've written that are kinda funny and hopefully kinda hot and are perfect little bonbons for when you need a quick fix.
5. The Forest and The Riddle: Patrochilles forever!!! Any Madeline Miller fans out there?? I read The Song of Achilles in two days and wrote these immediately afterward whilst still sobbing, pretty much.
Tagging five: @keirgreeneyes @raina-at @copperplatebeech @totallysilvergirl @discordantwords and anyone else who would like to self-rec their works!

I just started watching Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century out curiosity because I saw a few clips on YouTube and thought I should check it out. This show has NO RIGHT to be as good as it is. Is it’s the best adaptation ever? No. But is it surprisingly good for the one of the strangest premises I have seen in Sherlock Holmes adaptations I have seen to date? Yes. Holmes are Watson are still totally gay despite Watson being essentially an AI trained with Watson’s diary entries and whatnot and Holmes being a reanimated 200 year old preserved corpse. Holmes goes from denying that robot Watson is actually Watson to admitting that he needs him and inviting him to live in 221B with him.

Long post, sorry :,) I think about these idiots a lot. Lots of projection onto Sherlock, I apologize in advance.
I’m gonna avoid adding any ship headcanons because I want to focus on their characters and how they help each other, not the possibility of romance.
- Sherlock is an amazing artist. And I mean like, AMAZING. But he hates showing people his sketchbook. John is always baffled when he manages to catch a glimpse.
^ Idk if they’ll include Mycroft since he’s only in like two of the books but if they do include Mycroft, it’s absolutely his fault that Sherlock is insecure about showing his art to others.
- Sherlock’s ear defenders have stickers on them. Mariana gave him a pride flag sticker to put on them, he loves it.
- John shaved all his facial hair off once. Sherlock refused to look at him till it grew back, unless he put a mask on. Mariana laughed constantly during that time.
- John sleeps with his socks on. Thank you, fanartists.
- Sherlock will sometimes randomly decide to plop into John’s bed in the middle of the night. John secretly loves it.
- Sherlock’s hands are always freezing. Sometimes he’ll put a hand on the back of John’s neck because John hates it and it makes Mariana laugh, then John can’t stop himself from laughing. Sherlock loves when they laugh.
- John and Mariana have movie nights in 221B. Sometimes Sherlock will join but he doesn’t really enjoy movies, so he’ll just be on his phone. They do it in 221B anyway because they want Sherlock to feel included even though they know he won’t watch the movie regardless.
- CANE USER JOHN.
- As a followup to the previous hc, John hates using his cane in public. He always gets weird looks and he’s insecure about it. He often has to use it in the flat because he refuses to use it out in public, and Sherlock and Mariana never mention it. He’s gotten a bit more comfortable with it because of that.
- John has A Chair that no one touches. If a guest sits in his chair, Sherlock will tell them to move. John needs to always have an open, easily accessible spot to sit down due to his leg.
- Sherlock often goes nonverbal, especially after cases. John and Mariana have learned sign language for him. Partially to communicate with him while he’s nonverbal, partially to cut down on noise when he’s overwhelmed.
- Since it’s said in the beginning of the show that Sherlock has DID and I personally have DID, here’s a hc specific to that (which totally isn’t projection at all……). Sherlock has a child alter, as do many with DID. While John and Mariana aren’t very experienced with this stuff, they’ve taken time to learn and always make sure to keep the environment safe for said alter. They also will wait for Sherlock to tell them who’s fronting, because he often gets frustrated when they ask.
- Sorta related to the last one but also just general, Sherlock hates when people ask him things (unless it’s related to his interests). Stop asking him how his day was, stop asking him how he’s doing. If he wanted you to know, he would tell you.
- Sherlock loves John’s mum. She sees him as her son.
- John is oblivious. He’s had many people (mainly women) ask him out and didn’t understand he was being asked out on a date. He once had a friend who thought they were dating because she didn’t explicitly tell him and he just kept hanging out with her, thinking she just wanted to be friends. No malicious intentions whatsoever, he literally is just oblivious as fuck.
- On that note, John is bi, Sherlock is gay, and Mariana is lesbian.
- John’s insecure. Just in general. About his body, about his scars, about his voice, everything. He’s especially insecure about how much he yaps. It just happens and he gets frustrated with himself. Sherlock secretly loves it.
^ One time, John got so annoyed with himself that he decided he wouldn’t talk unless necessary. Sherlock told him he loves the yapping and reminded him that the podcast listeners love his rambles. John instantly went back to being his normal, yappy self.
- Possibly he/they Sherlock?
- The trio have all helped each other with insecurities. John’s and how they’ve helped him I’ve mentioned previously in this post. Mariana often feels out of place since she has no family in Britain and her accent stands out, but John always reminds her that him and Sherlock are her family too. Sherlock secretly loves her accent. Sherlock’s got a ton of mental issues (as stated in episode 1), and often gets frustrated because he has a hard time expressing his needs. John and Mariana do their best to accommodate. I’ve stated some ways I hc they do that previously.
I’m gonna stop now, but I could go on for hours.
I’ve actually been writing this on and off for several hours, oops.
Goodbye, enjoy some silly hcs. Feel free to add on to some of them in replies/reblogs, I’d love to see your hcs and I’d def love to hear (read ig) opinions on these.
