The first time Aitana saw Emily Prentiss well and alive, she turned went into ugly-crying mode in about a minute. She had tried to keep herself calm and use her words to express what she felt seeing a friend she thought died...but it all went south the moment she saw Emily in the conference room. She may as well have been her nephew Logan when he went into a tantrum. Incoherent words and sobs is how she greeted Emily. And hugs. Many, many hugs were given. Emily was kind enough to let her go through the different phases of her emotions but by the end of things, Aitana was still embarrassed she'd come undone like that.
The team was just happy that it seemed like everyone was coming back like before. Aitana had a long and serious talk with Hotch on her first day back at the BAU regarding her future. While the team had been suspended, Aitana had taken care of filing through the cases that had been sent to the BAU. She organized them as much as she could being on her own and now that everyone was back, they were going through them. Aitana was doing it "officially" as a profiler only. That was what she was being paid for until she graduated.
Hotch reminded her that she didn't have the obligation to perform any liaison duties until then, but Aitana insisted that it was what she wanted to do. She was determined to keep both sides of the job. But in the meantime that happened, all corresponding liaison files would be coming in through Penelope first — officially. Aitana thought it was fine, Penelope wouldn't mind sharing the duties outside of the official terms anyways. She'd already made it clear how much she missed her liaison partner. Everything seemed to be falling into place...until it wasn't. Nobody said anything whether or not it affected them directly, but they all saw and noticed. It was little things, sure, but nonetheless things they saw.
"So you finished the course?" Emily asked JJ DJ their way to the conference room.
JJ was ecstatic as the upcoming case would be her first as an official profiler on the team, finally shedding the probationary period. "Mm-hmm. And completed my case rotation!"
"Hotch says he's never seen a rookie profiler analyze and write up cases as well as you."
JJ blinked in surprise. "He said that?"
Emily chuckled. "Yeah. Well, after all the cases you presented over the years, I'm not surprised."
"Morning!" Aitana waited for the pair by the bullpen entrance. "Garcia is waiting for us in the conference room."
"Great," Emily said.
The elevator doors dinged open and Spencer came out in a hurry. He was already late but seeing who was blocking the way made him want to run right past them.
"Hey, where have you been?" JJ called when they noticed him coming. "I wanted to do brunch this weekend."
Spencer didn't afford her any look as he skimmed through a book in his hands. "I had to deal with some stuff with my mom."
"Morning," Aitana greeted him, "Have you—"
"I'm sorry, I need to find Garcia." Spencer went right past her without so much of a glance in her direction.
"Okay…" Aitana bit on her bottom lip as she watched him practically zoom through the bullpen to head on up the steps for the conference room.
"He hates me," JJ's remark pulled Aitana back to her and Emily.
Emily didn't want to admit anything and it was hard to act like there was nothing when there clearly was.
Aitana, however, sighed in acknowledgment. Everyone had noticed how quickly and easily Spencer avoided JJ and when he did have to talk to her, he was brief and quick about it. "He's just hurt. You're his best friend, after all."
"Was," JJ corrected. "He doesn't talk to me. Least you guys get a greeting."
"Do I?" Aitana made a face at the claim. "JJ, you know I don't like the way things are between you and Spencer — of course I want you guys to fix your friendship but…we can understand...why he would be...upset with you...right?" JJ knew where Aitana was going and assured her that she understood what she was trying to say. "But I didn't know anything," Aitana went on, "I was the last one to find out that Emily was alive, so...why is he mad at me? What did I do?"
That was the burning question that no one could answer. It was no secret why Spencer had put distance between him and JJ. JJ and Hotch had arranged for Emily's secret transfer out of the country while making everyone else think she was dead. JJ wasn't happy with what was happening but, like Aitana had said, she could understand why Spencer was upset with her.
But it was an outright mystery why he was seemingly upset with Aitana.
Aitana was forlorn each time Spencer brushed her off or made some excuse to basically be anywhere she wasn't. Even their study sessions had come to an unexpected end. She didn't expect him to help her each time, obviously, but why end them just like that? What had she done?
Maybe I finally bored him, she continuously (and bitterly) thought to herself. As awful as it felt, she could see it happening. She was nowhere near smart as he was so...maybe...he just finally saw that. Maybe he just didn't want to waste his time. He didn't want to be bored.

"All right, mes amis," Penelope addressed the team, clicker ready in hand, "You are jetting to Durant, Oklahoma, because in the last 3 days, two women have been found dead after being sexually tortured and then blinded with a sulfuric acid solution." She pulled up the photograph of a young blonde girl on the screen. "Abby Elcott is our first victim. 19-year-old art student. She was headed to campus for an advanced drawing class. She'd been missing for two days. Same goes for our second victim, Beth Westerly, 17." A second blonde girl's photograph popped up on the screen. "She had just finished her coffee shop shift and was on her way to a bar method class. Both low-risk victims."
"And physically similar," Morgan remarked. They could easily pass off as sisters. "How close are the two abduction sites?"
"Five miles apart at bus stops. Abby's cell was found near one, Beth's scarf near the other."
"And where are the dump sites?" asked Aitana.
"One in an alley, the other in a field."
"Sooo he stapled their eyes open, then he blinded them," Emily said, her nose crinkled as she perused through the morgue photographs in their hard copies. "It's about power and control. Maybe he didn't want them to watch while he hurt them."
"Or it could be about shame," JJ offered, and before she could add on, Spencer cut in.
"Perhaps the unsub is disfigured himself. Blinding the victims leaves them helpless, lost, totally dependent. It may be a manifestation of how he sees himself in this world."
"It is a form of enucleation, just without the scalpel," Rossi said, "His face is the last they see before darkness."
Hotch agreed with the others. "Garcia, come up with a list of jobs that would give the unsub access to sulfuric acid. The rest of us, wheels up in 30 minutes."
~0~
Once the jet had taken off, the team went over the cases in more detail to know what they were going to be looking at as soon as they landed.
"Victimology is very similar," Hotch remarked at the two pictures of the victims. "Blond-haired, blue-eyed teenage girls. We believe they were each abducted near public transportation stops."
Morgan found a picture of the second victim that seemed to have been taken without her knowledge. She didn't appear to be under any duress. "When was this photo taken?" He turned the picture around for the others to see.
"So Beth was caught on a bank surveillance camera 3 hours before she disappeared," Aitana explained. She'd gone over early details with Penelope before presenting the case to Hotch. "That's a recent photo of Abby," she said as Morgan went onto another picture of the first victim that also seemed to be taken in a moment of casualty.
"So she wasn't found in the same clothes she was abducted in," Morgan noted, because the pictures of the corpses had completely different clothing.
"Maybe he changed them because hers were burned by the sulfuric acid," JJ offered the idea.
"Sulfuric acid can turn human flesh into soap," Spencer remarked slightly quickly, enough to make JJ feel like she'd been brushed off again. "Garcia, any recent similar cases in the surrounding area?"
"Actually, yes," Penelope said. "Two months ago a prostitute and a runaway were both found raped and killed and they had stab wounds to their eyes."
"So maybe he practiced on high-risk victims first," Emily resolved. "And then advanced to chemical enucleation. Isn't that a rare paraphilia?"
"Well, the chemical part is," Spencer nodded, "It would exacerbate the pain."
"Like Ed Kemper, he's probably practicing on surrogates before going after the real object of his rage," said Rossi.
"Serrano, Dave, you and I will talk to the parents," Hotch said, though his gaze lingered on Aitana. He tended to do that more often now that she was meant to be profiling "officially". He wanted to be sure if she really wanted to stay behind in the precincts to do the liaison duties.
Aitana deeply appreciated it. When she nodded that it was what she wanted, he moved on to assign the rest of the team.

Later in the day, Spencer and JJ made their way down the blocks where their second victim was last seen. Once again, it was very clear that he would much rather be anywhere but there.
He walked fast down the street, forcing JJ to half sprint just to stay at his pace. "So Beth got off the bus here and headed northwest toward class."
"It's amazing no one witnessed her abduction," JJ said as she took note of the busy street. Cars were driving by almost every minute and there were several people waiting for the bus, not to mention waiting to cross the street.
"Emily was buried 6 feet under and wound up in Paris, so I guess anything's possible, right?" Spencer said curtly.
JJ's double take was done on automatic. It was very rare for Spencer to be so quick with a snap. It wasn't like him at all. "So that is what this is about." She wasn't at all surprised except for the fact that he'd finally admitted it out loud. At least now they could work on it.
"Maybe our unsub's a little bit like Bundy," Spencer kept going like she hadn't said anything, "He feigns injury in order to get her to help him."
JJ had to run to get in front of him and stop him from walking. "Look, Spence, if you want to talk about this—"
Of course Spencer then moved right past her and continued with his theory. The last thing he wanted was to give her the time of the day. "Maybe he tried other tactics, like, 'Wow, you're really pretty. 'You should be a model. I can take your photo.'"
JJ was forced to follow him, putting a pause on the conversation that would definitely need to happen in the near future. "Either one would disarm her. Charm is quite the killer."
"So are tears," Spencer muttered and looked around the street. JJ frowned are him. "Whatever his ruse was, the unsub mostly likely used it to get her into his vehicle."
"Well, if Abby was last seen at a bus stop a few miles away, then he definitely has a means of transportation," she remarked, bracing herself for the next jab. "Hopefully the disposal site will tell us more."

The one thing Aitana actually liked about being away from the BAU were the lack of horrified faces her words elicited from people. Here she was delivering horrific details to a victim's parents about how their daughter was brutally tortured for hours — days. This was this worst part of the job when the victims were already dead. The crime had been done; the grief was ineivtable.
"He had her for two days?" Mrs. Elcott, Abby's mother was truly horrified and terrified of what she learned. "I can't even imagine what she went through."
Her husband, Mr. Elcott, was in the same state. "Why did he blind her?"
"That's what we're trying to figure out." Aitana didn't feel any better saying that to them. What came next certainly wasn't good either. It was the last thing on the parents' minds. "I know this is difficult, but I need you to look at the clothes that Abby was wearing when we found her." She reached for a plastic bag behind her with Abby's clothes. She held it between them, patiently waiting until one of the parents took the bag. "Do you recognize them? Do you find anything odd about the specific clothing?"
Mrs. Elcott shook her head suddenly, nose crinkling in a manner that didn't seem to pertain to her grief. Aitana knew that something was off.
"They're not Abby's," the mother finally said.
Aitana hummed. "Are you sure?" Her eyes raked over the bag's label. It had Abby's name because it was what she was wearing when they found her.
Mrs. Elcott nodded her head. Aitana noted how sure the woman looked. Not even the grief was making her rethink things.
"I saw her that morning. She had on a brown and pink sweater."
Aitana nodded. She didn't press any further. She thought the parents deserved some rest.

Morgan and Emily returned shortly after the interviews with the victims' parents had finished, both rather dejected with the little they'd gotten from the second crime scene. Aitana had busied herself in the borrowed conference room in the precinct. She'd already started the evidence board for both victims and was eager to add anything new to get them to their Unsub.
"Hotch and Rossi went to the morgue," she told the pair, "They'll be back later."
"Reid and JJ?" asked Morgan.
"Local thrift store. Since the unsub seems to have a fixation with 80s clothes, we figured that's where he'd most likely find these types of clothes."
"So we're on waiting duty 'til then?" Emily presumed.
Aitana nodded and moved around her. "So I've been thinking," she started, busying herself with some papers on the table, "About why Spencer could be upset with me…"
"Oh, don't even worry about that," Morgan said, though he like everyone else would love to know what reason Spencer had to be mad at her.
"But I will, and I am," Aitana said, planting her hands on the table, "I've been thinking about this, really thinking, and I can only see that maybe I crossed his boundaries? I-I think about the study sessions and maybe he got fed up with me." Both Morgan and Emily exchanged glances, both clearly doubting this was the reason. "I focus a lot on my studies, okay? And I scooted too close to him or something various times. Maybe that's it."
"Okay," Emily decided to cut in before Aitana went into a full ramble, "I really don't think that's it. You shouldn't think about that."
"It's the only thing I can think of," Aitana insisted. "I annoyed him until he snapped."
"Sprinkles, calm down," Morgan gestured for her to bring it down. She'd been rising in volume. "I'm with Emily. I highly doubt being too close to him was the problem. If you haven't noticed, he's very comfortable around you."
"But I'm still the new girl," Aitana chewed on her bottom lip. "I'm not Emily, I'm not Penelope and I'm definitely not JJ. You've all known him for years. I've known him for about one."
"It's not that, I can almost swear it," Morgan said.
"Okay, then maybe I bored him? Maybe I literally bored him to death!"
"'Bored him'?" Morgan couldn't stop the chuckle that slipped from him. Emily whacked him on the arm and walked over to Aitana to reassure her that was not the case.
"I'm just — I don't get it!" Aitana exclaimed in the end, frustrated. "I wasn't even part of the team when all this shit happened! If it's not to do with that, then it has to be from our studying sessions! You guys gotta help me because I really don't want to end up like JJ...as bad as that sounds."
"Hey, hey, it'll be okay," Emily said, giving her a hug. Morgan came to rest a hand on Aitana's shoulder with the most reassuring smile he could produce for her, but it was difficult to believe them at that moment.

Later that same day, another dead victim was discovered in an alley. Being the closest to the site, Spencer and JJ met with the detective on the case, Mosely.
"Again he's disposing in an area frequented by homeless people." Moseley gestured to the street behind them. It wasn't frequented by many people. "It's equidistant to the last two dump sites."
JJ stood closer to the corpse, bending down to note the chemical reaction on the victim's mouth. The skin was angry red with multiple large bumps, and that was just on the outside. "He burned her tongue with the chemical this time. He removed her ability to taste."
"Why would he do that?" Mosely asked.
"Historically this kind of torture was used to prevent someone from revealing a secret," Spencer explained. He didn't get too close to the victim like JJ had.
"Maybe she offended him," JJ theorized at the top of her head only to get another sour remark from Spencer.
"I wonder what that's like," he said in his usual quick-paced tone. "Her lips are extremely chapped. She was probably forced to repeatedly participate in some sort of kissing fantasy. And when things go awry, he takes the offending sense away." He observed the odd 80s clothes the victim wore; they were in the same style as the other two victims. "He tortured her in these clothes, which means the eighties are essential to his delusion."
"Maybe that's when this rejection occurred and he held on to the clothes all these years," JJ said, pausing to hear whether or not Spencer would agree. He pointedly ignored her. JJ straightened up on her feet, pushing past her growing irritation to keep it professional. "And now he's attacking girls who remind him of women from that time. He's fixated on her type and remakes them fit his fantasy."
"But why start now?" asked Mosley, still looking between the two agents.
JJ felt like she had the perfect answer. "Something probably triggered it, and instead of dealing with it, he's acting out."
Spencer still very much ignored her, her words and her sharp look.

Knowing what they knew now, the team felt like it was highly time to deliver the profile. They had no doubt the unsub was going to strike again on the same day so time was of the essence.
"We believe the unsub or unknown subject that we're looking for is a white male in his 40s," Hotch began, "This is someone who's reacting to rejection by a woman when he was a teenager in the 1980s."
"He's punishing his victims for their reactions to him by taking away their senses with sulfuric acid," Spencer said. They'd been able to identify the specific acid very quickly but without much luck of where it was specifically coming from.
"We believe our unsub could possibly work part-time as a janitor or a mechanic, which would give him access to this chemical," said Rossi.
"And after studying the disposal sites, we think it's likely that he is homeless," Morgan said. "Now, how do we typically react toward the homeless? We judge them by their looks and smells. It's that same negative reaction we believe that a woman had toward the unsub at some point in the eighties."
"The unsub's fixation on this woman is now all-consuming," Aitana went on, "It's caused him to develop obsessive love disorder. He most likely has tunnel vision and believes that she holds the key to his happiness." She almost shuddered thinking back to the unsub she still felt responsible for creating in her brother's precinct. "He will stalk her in an attempt to win her back…"
"He will do whatever it takes to be near his love interest," JJ said, unknowingly helping her colleague, "But her rejection will spiral him into a depression."
"Which would lead to rape and murder of the surrogates who represent her," Spencer said, "And it's only a matter of time before this rage and anger causes the unsub to go after her directly."
Hence, time was of the complete essence.

"Spence. Look, we gotta talk about this!" JJ trailed after Spencer into the conference room. She was done with the petty remarks from him and she genuinely feared that the more time she wasted being upset herself, it would be even harder to get Spencer to forgive her.
"I don't want to talk about it," Spencer kept making rounds at the table, gathering papers he had no idea about.
"I get it, ok? You're disappointed with the way we handled Emily!"
"Listen, I have a lot going on, all right?" Spencer finally stopped near the open doors when he saw the look on JJ's face. It was anger. How could she be angry? It was her fault. "What?" He demanded to know.
"You know what I think it is?" JJ could feel the stinging tears in her eyes. She was absolutely done handling his behavior when she had just done her job to help Emily. "You're mad that Hotch and I controlled our micro-expressions at the hospital and you weren't able to detect our deception."
Spencer scoffed in her face. "Seriously? You think it's about my profiling skills? Jennifer, listen, the only reason you were able to manage my perceptions is because I trusted you. I came to your house for 10 weeks in a row crying over losing a friend, and not once did you have the decency to tell me the truth."
"I couldn't!"
"You couldn't? Or you wouldn't?"
"No, I couldn't!" JJ said in exasperation, though she pulled herself together as much as she could when she saw somebody coming nearing the door.
"What if I started taking Dilaudid again—"
"Spencer—"
"Would you have let me!?" Spencer went on, louder to go over JJ's voice.
"Spencer, stop—"
Spencer shook his head at her and turned to leave, only to crash into a smaller figure. It was Aitana, wide eyed and stunned. Behind them, JJ sighed. She'd tried to cut Spencer off but he was just too angry to listen to her. It all connected fast for Spencer. Aitana had to have heard everything, at least the important stuff he would've never really talked about.
"I was not supposed to hear that!" Aitana exclaimed once she'd found her voice. She gripped the papers in her hands even tighter, enough to make her knuckles turn white.
"Aitana—"
"N-no, I'm going, don't worry!" Aitana spun away, eyes getting even wider once they were hidden. He'll be furious for sure, she thought to herself as she rushed off.
"Aitana, wait, Ai-Aitana!" Spencer tried to grab her arm but she was too fast for him. "Great!" He would've yelled had he not held onto the last shred of professionalism being in the precinct. He turned back to JJ, face red with newfound anger. "Absolutely great! That's great! This is absolutely what I wanted her to know about me!"
JJ grew incredulous at his insinuation. "This isn't my fault! Look, I get why you're mad at me but I don't know what the hell you got to be mad about with Aitana! And not talking about it is what got you into that" — she gestured in the direction Aitana went off in — "mess so don't blame that on me!"
"Oh please," Spencer scoffed. "Like you and everyone else don't know!"
"Know about what?" JJ said, confused. "If you, for a second, even think that she knew what Hotch and I did—"
"That's not it!" snapped Spencer. "Maybe mull it over with Morgan or something. You both love to think that I'm a-a girlfriend stealer!"
"A what!?" JJ had to have heard wrong. She had to. There was no way that's what he said to her.
"You and Morgan, even Garcia sometimes, you all love to tease me about Aitana even when I have repeatedly expressed my discomfort about it!"
"Spence, we didn't mean to—"
"Yes, yes you did mean it! You've all meant each and every one of your teases and I'm sick of it!"
"I'm...I'm sorry, I just...we all just think you would make a nice couple," JJ shrugged awkwardly. Maybe this one was her fault — hers and Morgan's apparently. "You guys clicked in the beginning—I thought things would for sure turn into something when she took my position."
"Nothing would happen!" Spencer snapped, growing even more angry the more he listened to her. Actually, 'anger' wouldn't even be the right description for how he felt. He was disgusted. That's exactly what he was. Because his friends didn't seem to know who he was. "When have I ever given you, or done something, to give you the idea that I would make a move on Aitana?"
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't think…" JJ was rather speechless on the matter. She honestly never considered that Spencer would react like this to something that seemed so innocent. She genuinely thought—and still thought today—that she was just helping to push two people who would be good together. She liked to think that she knew Spencer best so she was sure that Aitana would be a good fit...
Apparently, she'd been wrong.
"So I'm done giving you, Morgan and everyone else the ammunition to keep teasing me. I'm putting distance between us to stop the teasing," Spencer said, backtracking from JJ. "Because the last thing I want is for Aitana to think that I was only her friend to get her to go out with me!"

Aitana made it her absolute mission to stay clear of Spencer for the rest of the case. It was ironic that she was now doing the avoiding, though it was definitely easy when Spencer didn't exactly try to talk to her. Aitana was smart enough to know that he eventually would, at least to clarify things and she didn't feel like she was apt for that conversation yet.
Of course, that didn't mean JJ wouldn't try to step in.
Aitana made herself scarce from the conference room when the team was there and since Spencer, Hotch and Rossi were currently in there...she was not. In fact, she'd been in the restroom for a good twenty minutes now. It was probably why JJ had come in.
"Don't say anything," Aitana warned when she saw the blonde through the sink mirror. "I don't...that was not my conversation to hear at all."
"I know," JJ said, unable to imagine how Aitana must feel at the moment. "But...you did hear it and you really only heard the worst of it."
"I wasn't supposed to hear anything," Aitana shook her head. "If he was mad at me before, he probably wishes I was dead now."
"You know, I don't really think Spencer could ever think like that about someone," JJ offered her a little smile.
"There's always a first," Aitana mumbled.
"Look, Aitana, Spencer was never mad at you. We talked about that—it was back and forth but we talked about—and it has nothing to do with you. It's sort of my fault too."
"C'mon JJ," Aitana sighed. "I did something bad and then I did something worse. Spencer is going to hate me, if he doesn't already."
"No, he's not. I think you and him are overdue for a conversation…"
Aitana cracked the first genuine smile the team had seen in a while. "That's rich from you, JJ."
JJ swayed her head. "I know but between you and me, he's going to come to you first. I see it."
Aitana turned away from the sinks, facing JJ with a saddened smile. "You're his best friend. He needs to come to you first. And, if by any chance he asks, tell him I'm not saying anything. The pieces that I heard — I'm not saying anything."
"I'm sure he knows that." JJ had no doubt about it. All Spencer could think about was the fact that Aitana now knew one of his worst past moments, and out of context too. Even if he was angry with JJ, she could still read him like a book. And the situation with Aitana was making him hurt.

With some help from the local group home in the neighborhood, the team was now tasked with interviewing 19 potential unsubs. Morgan and Emily were out scoping the area which left the team a bit shorthanded.
Aitana kept her attention solely on the men on her list. If she even for a second thought that Spencer might come near her, she bolted from the spot. She had no idea what to expect no matter what JJ said. She had a reputation for barging into conversations—her older brothers used to complain about it growing up—but this time seemed like the worst of all. She would have to set it aside after getting word of another potential victim gone missing.
Detective Moseley introduced the picture of the young girl to her in the bullpen. "She's been missing since last night."
Aitana nodded. "Okay, and the parents?"
"They're at the house. We're bringing her friends in for questioning."
"Good, yeah, um, I'll let the team know but you should get a start on the friends." Aitana took the rest of the information on the girl then turned fast for the conference room to relay the situation to them.
"Tammy Bradstone is similar to the previous 3 vics," Morgan said as Aitana pinned the blonde teenager's picture to their board.
"In appearance and age," JJ agreed.
"Apparently, she was at homecoming last night," Aitana stepped back from the board, "And said homecoming spot was right smack in the comfort zone."
"Morgan, Prentiss, you head over to the parents' home to start the interview," instructed Hotch. "We'll need to canvass the homecoming site too." His eyes flickered to the remaining profilers and internally sighed. Three out of the four were in awkward distances from each other. He nearly shook his head. "Reid, Rossi, head over now."
The relief was ever so palpable in the air. Unsurprisingly, Spencer was the first one to leave the room (and quickly). Rossi walked out a couple seconds later, expression bearing the 'I'm not dealing with this' on his face.
"I will fix it," JJ promised Hotch.
"Overwhelming him isn't going to do the trick," Hotch warned her. "Best to give him some time." His gaze soon drifted to Aitana who caught it in a second.
"I...heard something I shouldn't have," she explained in a quiet whisper. "And keeping true to my word—" she looked at JJ for that, "—I will not be repeating anything. I'm going to go see the friends' interviews." She couldn't possibly leave the room any quicker.

All other potential unsubs were dropped from the list once Morgan and Prentiss discovered that the victim's father had a brother who fit the profile perfectly. Cy Bradstone was their guy and now they needed to find him. And given that Cy had a deep obsession for the victim's mother, Lilah, it was fairly easy tricking him into coming to the house. As soon as he was there, he was arrested and brought back to the precinct.
"How's it going?" Morgan approached JJ at the interrogation window.
"Not well," JJ said, watching Hotch and Rossi practically yell at Cy in vain. "He's not giving anything up. Has Garcia found anything?"
Morgan shook his head. "No. Cy doesn't legally have any properties. If he has something, it's got to be old enough not to even register as property. Aitana's trying to help Garcia by going through Cy's history growing up, local places he may have visited."
"I think I should help," JJ said, deciding it had to be better than just watching the interrogation.
"Actually," Morgan said, blocking her way, "I sort of left her and Reid in the same room so, um, let's give it a minute...or ten."
JJ sighed. "Not going to work. You know that's also why he's upset with me, right? And you, for that matter."
Morgan made a face. "What did I do?"
"It's what we've been doing regarding, um…" JJ took a quick scan of the hallway to make sure there wasn't anybody nearby, "Our teasing about him and Aitana."
"What? We always do that. We do it every time there's a girl he might be interested in…"
"We struck a nerve with Aitana apparently," JJ shrugged. "I didn't mean to upset him…"
"Neither of us did," Morgan said, "But, frankly, I don't understand why we made him mad."
"I don't know either. I might be a little offended on behalf of Aitana, honestly, because she's been nothing but sweet."
"That's not like Reid," Morgan said confidently. There had to be something they were missing, something that no doubt was the reason Spencer was mad enough to put a heavy distance between himself and Aitana.
~0~
It took one short conversation between Cy and his brother to get the location of Tammy. As soon as the team had it, they moved out. They secured the small cabin before going in. Sure enough, Tammy Bradstone was lying unconscious inside.
"Look at her hands." Aitana's eyes had widened with horror. Tammy's hands were red, bumpy and throbbing.
"She's got a pulse," Emily said quickly after checking. She pressed a finger over her ear comm. "We need a medic in here!"
"This is downright horrible," Aitana mumbled to Emily when the medics rushed in. "To think it was her uncle…" And yet it wasn't even the worst they had seen.
They rushed Tammy to the hospital and while they had to head back to the precinct to clear up their stuff, they kept a close ear on Tammy's condition. By the time they were heading home on the jet, they were relieved to hear Tammy's high chances of getting back her sense of touch in her hands. Emily decided to inform Spencer herself since everybody else has fallen asleep on the jet. She slipped into the chair opposite of him to tell him.
"That's good. We got there in time," Spencer said, briefly raising his eyes from the book he was reading.
"I...heard Mr. Bradstone wants to watch the tape," Emily said after a moment.
Spencer didn't look as surprised as the others had been. "People have an innate curiosity to see things in order to confirm them."
Emily's eyebrows raised. She should have figured that he would say something like that. "Well, that explains why I'm going to Rossi's tomorrow night. I want to see if he really can cook. You coming?"
"I don't know. I'm not so sure I can make it," Spencer flatout lied and he knew it just like Emily did.
"Look, Reid, I know you're mad at us because we didn't tell you what really happened, and I understand that. But I promise you, we had no choice. You mourned the loss of a friend. I mourned the loss of 7." Emily's gaze was hard and at the same time weak in front of Spencer. "This whole thing gave me an ulcer. Please don't give me another one."
Spencer had to wonder in that moment if his anger was really worth causing that kind of look. He was caught up in his whirlwind of feelings that he never considered what Emily had to go through from her end of the situation.
"Please, talk with JJ again," Emily pleaded, "It really wasn't her fault. The situation required absolute discretion."
"We'll see," Spencer mumbled, eyes landing back on the page of his book.
"By tomorrow…"
"Mhm…"
With a sigh, Emily left the conversation at that. For the rest of the trip, nothing else was said nor done.
~0~
If somebody had told Spencer that he would be the one to go find JJ to talk, he would've called them crazy. But...here he was, knocking on JJ's front door the next day. JJ's shocked face was definitely something that reaffirmed Spencer's feelings.
"You're not busy are you?" He asked, feeling awkward as JJ led him inside the house. It was quiet.
"No, no, Will took Henry out for a boys' day."
"Okay, um, good…" Spencer swallowed hard, "I, um, Emily and I spoke last night. I get that you had to do it, not say anything, but…" How could he say 'you couldn't have told me?' without sounding selfish? The answer was: there wasn't a way. The realization hit him hard. "I'm sorry," he finally said. "As much as I would've wanted you to tell me, you really couldn't have."
JJ's eyes were quick to tear up. "I couldn't," she affirmed. "And I'm really sorry about that. You had no idea how hard it was to have you here hurting and there wasn't anything I could do."
Spencer nodded. "Wasn't a picnic on my end either. I'm sorry…"
JJ hugged him and to her utter relief, he hugged her back. She had her best friend back.
"Are you coming to Rossi's tonight?" she asked him, drawing away from him. "You know he'll be on you if you don't."
Spencer managed a small smile. "I don't know."
"The way to get better is to try," JJ reminded him. "It'll be our first gathering together since everything with Emily happened."
"I know," Spencer said, only just now realizing it too. "Maybe."
"You know…" JJ started, tilting her head, "Aitana said she for sure wasn't going."
At that, Spencer wasn't the least bit surprised and he couldn't at least pretend to be. What she must be thinking about him genuinely scared him. It was ironic that he had spent so much time being cautious in order for her not to think lowly of him and now it had blown up in his face.
"Spence, I understand why you were mad at me because of the situation with Emily but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what is this disdain you have for Aitana. Morgan couldn't figure it out either."
"Please don't hurt my feelings." The fact Spencer had requested so earnestly left JJ even more confused.
"I don't understand, do you hate her?"
"No, of course not! I wouldn't have gone to such an extent to avoid her if I hated her."
"What?" JJ sighed. "Spence, you're going to have to walk me through this because I'm not getting it."
"You don't get it?" Spencer couldn't help the angry huff that came out of him. "JJ, what's not to get? I hate the idea that the people who know me best — my best friend," he gestured at her, "would think that I'm the type of guy who goes after a woman who already has a boyfriend!"
"What!?" JJ was absolutely sure that she had heard wrong. She had to. He couldn't think that she was trying to set him up with somebody who wasn't available. That would make her a terrible friend! Which is why he was irritated with you and Morgan...Now everything made perfect sense.
"C'mon!" Spencer turned away, taking a few irritated steps from her. "I take the teasing when it's harmless but you and Morgan took it to another level with Aitana. To constantly make jokes and try to push me to do something with her when she has a boyfriend speaks to what you think of me."
"You think Aitana has a boyfriend!?"
"She does! And it genuinely scared me thinking about what Aitana would say if she found out about this." It really did terrify Spencer. He loved spending time with her and the fact he had to stop them hurt more than he expected. "That's why I've done my best not to be so close to her now."
"We've noticed," JJ said, "She's definitely noticed."
"It's not my intention to make her feel bad," Spencer said, turning slightly to meet JJ's gaze. "It really wasn't. I just didn't know what else to do."
JJ rubbed her forehead. She might be getting a headache...or she might be wanting to laugh instead. The second choice might give Spencer the wrong idea, though, which was why she was resisting the urge. "Okay," she said after a moment in which she'd sucked in a deep breath, "This is one huge misunderstanding. Spencer, Aitana doesn't have any boyfriend. I don't know where you got that idea from."
"I didn't get the idea from anywhere—I know she has a boyfriend. It's fine, I don't care," Spencer said just a tad quick.
"No, she doesn't!" JJ exclaimed. "I would never push you to act if I knew that she had a boyfriend. That's not you, alright? I know that."
Spencer wanted to be relieved to hear that his best friend didn't think he was a girlfriend stealer, but things weren't making complete sense. "But...she does, JJ. I've seen him. We all have."
"Who the hell have you been seeing, then?" JJ asked, confused. "I speak to Aitana on a regular basis; I have since I talked her into joining the team. She doesn't have any boyfriend."
"Then what about Angel, then?" Spencer said, thinking that he'd challenged her. Now it was harder for JJ not to laugh, and this time she didn't make it. "It's not funny!" Spencer frowned.
"It kind of is—this whole thing is so horrendously funny!" JJ shook her head. "Spence, Angel isn't Aitana's boyfriend. He's her brother! Half brother but brother nonetheless! She's his little sister!"
Time slowed down for Spencer. JJ's words replayed in his head at least twice before he was able to form a coherent sentence. "He's...her...brother?"
JJ nodded slowly. "Yes! Aitana's father had a son with another woman before meeting Aitana's mother. Angel is the oldest brother out of three. It's him, Mateo, and then Aitana. Siblings."
Spencer brought a hand to his forehead and slowly pushed his hair back as he thought. Aitana's relationship with Angel always did seem to be on the playful side. He thought it was a nice atmosphere between the pair but it definitely made more sense knowing they were siblings. "This whole time...they've been brother and sister?"
"Yeah," JJ smiled softly at him, "Angel moved in with Aitana when she came out of WPP to help her out. He's been looking after her."
"I never considered…" Spencer released a breath, "I'm not...oh my God."
JJ patted his arm comfortingly, her smile still warm and kind. "Hey, it's a mistake anybody could've done."
"You didn't! Nobody else did!"
"Well...you've never been the best at social queues…" JJ said, offering him an apology afterwards. "If I had known that's what you thought, I would've set the record straight. Of course I know that you wouldn't go after somebody already in a relationship."
"I'm sorry," Spencer shook his head. "I'm an idiot." With all the degrees under his name, he didn't see this?
"A smart idiot," JJ amended. "But listen, we are good. I don't need an apology but I think that maybe you might want to go talk to Aitana."
"I don't know what to say to her," Spencer said quickly, the fear already rising at the idea of meeting with Aitana. "She heard me, JJ. I can't…"
"She heard a piece, not the story, and if you don't want to tell her that it's fine. You just need to clarify things," JJ said. "You can do that."
"What if she's scared?"
"She is because she doesn't have the story."
Spencer sighed. "Yeah..."
"C'mon, you fixed things with me. What's a little more talking going to do to you?"
"Bad things," Spencer didn't hesitate to answer. JJ laughed. "I have made a fool out of myself, JJ. She's going to be angry with me apart from already being afraid."
"Then you best get going. I'd like to see her at tonight's dinner. We want the whole team together."
Spencer knew it was the fair thing to do — the fair thing that Aitana deserved.
~ 0 ~
It would take a little bit of research to find out where Aitana was in the afternoon. On the rare off days that they had from the BAU, Spencer didn't really know what Aitana got up to.
He was a little surprised to hear that she had a class at a dance studio. Of course, he knew that his surprise wouldn't compare to the shock that Aitana probably felt when she came out of said studio and saw him waiting. This time, she didn't have anywhere to run to. The studio was closing and her duffel bag weighed down on her shoulder.
"How'd you know where to find me?" It was the first thing that came to her mind once she was able to think a little more clearly.
"I, uh, I went to your house first. Angel was there and he told me." Spencer offered her one of his awkward smiles. He didn't want to seem like he'd been going through her life again, not with that journal incident still hanging between them.
"Oh, right." Aitana never really considered the fact someone might go looking for her during her lessons and much less that her big-mouth-brother would say something.
Spencer's eyes flickered over her to see the studio. "You're taking classes?"
"Sort of," Aitana cleared her throat. Her hand began gripping the strap of her duffel bag. "When I quit the FBI, I had some more time on my hands and Elia convinced me to come here to take some folklore dance classes again. Of course this wasn't really a normal class. Now that I'm back at the BAU, I sort of have like individual classes to catch up on what I've missed."
"That sounds great," Spencer said, "I remember a picture that Elia showed me the first time we met. You, uh, you had a competition?"
Aitana smiled slightly. "Yeah, um, we did. I won second place. If this goes well…" she gestured back to the studio, "We might enter the competition they're hosting for the Day of the Dead this year. Months away, I know, but practice takes forever."
"Commendable considering everything else on your plate," Spencer remarked, earning a small hum of agreement.
"But could you...could you keep this to yourself for now? I-I don't really want the team knowing. It's something I'm not entirely sure I want to keep doing yet…"
"Of course, yeah," Spencer nodded. It was the least he could do for her after everything. "Um, Aitana, I need to talk to you."
Aitana expected as much. It just didn't mean she wasn't nervous about it. "You don't have to," she said weakly. She wasn't saying it entirely for his sake. She was afraid of what he would say to her.
"I do," Spencer insisted. "What you heard...about the...the um…" He struggled so much to say the damn word as if he didn't used to crave it all the time.
"You don't have to say anything about that, Spencer," Aitana whispered. She could see the conflict in his eyes and she didn't want to be the reason for it. "I'm no one to judge nor to demand stories."
"You're my friend," Spencer corrected. "And I have been a pretty lousy friend in return."
"Did I...did I do something to make you angry with me?" Aitana couldn't help herself from asking. It was the question that she kept thinking about every day for a while now. The possibilities were driving her crazy.
"No, no," Spencer said fast, "It was...I thought...you know what? It doesn't matter what I thought. I had some issues and I took them out on you." It was close enough to the truth.
"But what did you think?" Aitana pressed for a better answer. "I mean, it would be better to know so that I don't make you think that again."
"It's nothing to do with you, Aitana. It was something personal. And, like I said, it was very unfair of me to take it out on you. I'm really sorry."
"It's alright, as long as...well...as long as you're not mad at me anymore?" Aitana said nervously. "Because I have to say that I really miss you. And I'm not talking about study sessions. I miss my friend."
"Me too," Spencer smiled down at her. He missed being around her and having their study sessions. He didn't really think about how much it had helped him when he came to JJ's place to stay over. Aitana had the talent to lift anybody's mood no matter how down they were, and he had been very down for a while.
"And about...what I heard...you don't have to worry about that. It's not coming out of my mouth ever," Aitana promised him.
"I know you wouldn't but everybody already knows," Spencer said, biting down on his bottom lip. "It was...it was a long time ago. I didn't choose to take it the first time. This unsub, he had a dual personality, and he kidnapped me. One of his personalities injected me with Dilaudid so many times to help me get through those hard moments, his way of helping me. Of course it didn't really help me in the end...I became addicted."
"Oh Spencer, I'm so sorry," Aitana whispered. She couldn't really say anything else but that. Her own traumatic experiences were nothing like that.
"When I said...that to JJ, it just came out. I shouldn't have said that at all," Spencer continued. He had started and now he would finish it. "Addictions are not dependent on someone. It's just...when Emily's supposed death was just recent, I felt terrible."
"Did you go anywhere near it?" Aitana asked him.
"No," Spencer shook his head. "That's also why I kept coming to JJ's. I was afraid of what I could do during the nights if I was on my own. I needed help, I just didn't know how to ask for it."
"But you did, in your own way," Aitana pointed out, expressing her pride in hopes that he would feel the same for himself. "I think you should focus on that because it speaks to your determination to not fall again."
Spencer smiled softly at her. "Thank you," he said. There went her talent again. His mood was definitely being lifted. "Really, thanks." Aitana nodded. "If you're feeling up to it, you should come by Rossi's tonight. He's making dinner."
Aitana chuckled. "Yeah, I told them I couldn't make it. I had dance and, um…" She didn't want to outright say that she wasn't going because of him but Spencer figured that out long before.
"I'll go if you go," Spencer proposed.
"You're going?"
"Yeah, I mean...I've never really seen Rossi's house—mansion."
"Is it really a mansion?"
"Yeah."
"Hmm…" Aitana bit her bottom lip, feigning a pensive moment, "I mean...if you go...maybe I can too…"
"Great! I'll meet you there, then?"
"Yeah, okay!" Aitana finally agreed. It would be completely different if they were both going on good terms.
~ 0 ~
Everyone was nearly gathered in front of Rossi later that night. He had several bowls of ingredients and one whole pot of spaghetti noodles ready to go. Glasses of red wine were placed on the isle in front of the team but were not to be drunk before the food was ready. JJ found that out the hard way when she dared to take a sip. Aitana was second to last in arriving and even though it was a little late, she was still welcomed.
"I see things are almost done," she hummed. She eyed the several cups and plates with the yet to be added ingredients. "All this, Rossi?" she asked, causing a break of laugh from the others when Rossi deadpanned her.
"You all asked me to show you the right way to make spaghetti," he reminded, "Yes, you need all of these spices."
"Rossi," Aitana giggled, "I'm Mexican. I eat, sleep and breathe spices." The laughter increased by tenfold. "I'm serious! Even our candy has spice in it!"
While Aitana had a little back and forth with Rossi, Spencer arrived. He was a little startled with the room but since everyone else was laughing, including both Aitana and Rossi, he figured he'd missed a joke.
"You know what, Rossi? I am not questioning your clearly authentic spaghetti," Aitana said with her hands raised in front of her. "I was just saying—"
"Zit!" Rossi pointed at her with his wooden spoon.
The others snickered again while Aitana ducked her head much like a reprimanded child would. She felt a nudge on her side and glanced to her right to see Spencer. He was smiling but he was struggling not to outright laugh at her like everyone else.
"Shut up," she rolled her eyes and whipped her head away from him. That time, Spencer did laugh a little bit.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my late, great friend + part-time mentor Rick Anderson (The Tubes), the 1971 Bangla Desh concerts, Lionel Bart, incredible guitarist Tommy Bolin, Pam Brenneman (RIP), Geoff Britton, Rob Buck (10,000 Maniacs), the late, great Boz Burrell, Jim Carroll, William Clark, Coolio, Rick Coonce (Grass Roots), Denny Cordell, Robert Cray, Joe Elliott, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Joe Friday, André Gagnon, Jerry Garcia, Dhani Harrison, Geoffrey Holder, Henrietta Lacks, Paddy Maloney (The Chieftains), Herman Melville, Jason Momoa, MTV (1981), Yoshinao Nakada, Taapsee Pannu, Michael Penn, Edith Pretty, Mrunal Thakur, and my friend and musical colleague evinrude a.k.a. Kevin Spyker. Starting around 1997 I worked as a bassist-singer and producer on some recordings and a string of concerts with Kevin a.k.a. evinrude—the name of a famous cartoon dragonfly, which applied to Kevin’s powerhouse abilities as a singer-songwriter, multi-media artist, and DJ. He also sang on a couple of my tracks and I recall a “rooftop concert” at Lycoming College. Kevin’s song “For Angela” is a highlight from the evinrude debut album, which received good notices and drew comparisons to Beck and Blind Melon. At the board is John Bechdel (Killing Joke, Ministry), who enhanced the synth-y groove of this enchanting track. Meanwhile, HB to KS and thank you for taking flight...

Taste.
Thank you so much for sending this in! As luck would have it, this pops up in two of my WIPs, so here we go!
The first is, ironically, from the exact same fic that the last word prompt I got came up with. Exact same snippet too! From the weird point in my life where I wrote half of a CMJF fic 😬
Max opened his mouth to protest but there was no arguing with that. He sighed. ‘’Whatever. You’ve got issues, old man.’’
‘’Never heard that before,’’ Punk said dryly. He carried Max the rest of the way, over to the sink. ‘’Now, stop whining and fill your bottle.’’
Max followed the second part of that instruction, but not the first. He loudly complained the entire time about ‘shitty Chicago water’. How it tasted like ass compared to what he was used to and how much of an insult it was that he had to drink this swill. Punk ignored all of it and carried him back to the coach, sitting him back in his lap just as he had before.
Max sighed again. ‘’Seriously. This sucks.’’
Punk pressed his lips against Max’s cheek and whispered low. ‘’Quiet.’’
Max obeyed.
And secondly, this is from...well, a sequel I wrote to a fic that I haven't even finished yet? And inexplicably, it's Daniel Garcia/Julia Hart?? Because I'm the kind of person who gets weirdly into pairings that literally no one else ships and writes sequels before I've even finished the first installment. Ain't I a stinker?
There were two places where Daniel felt most in his element - in the ring, and in a club like this. He’d hit up this exact place before, the last time AEW were in the area for Dynamite, and it was just as perfect as he remembered. The music was awesome, whoever the DJ was had great taste in reggaeton. The drinks were top notch, if a little pricey, and the dance floor was packed with people just as happy to be dancing the night away as he was.
And then there was Julia.
Daniel may have been at home here, but she stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the other club-goers. No flashy clothes, no skin on display, no drink in her hand and no movement. She stood there, dressed all in black, hands behind her back, still as a statue.
#Again thanks for the prompt!!#Hope I didn't disappoint with the lack of Hookhausen!#Like I said I have a loooooot of WIPs

Not only is it #CHP30 but it’s #Anothertime8 😱 Repost from @drumwax • #nowspinning DJ EFN's compilation album, "Another Time". Released on this date, in 2015 by Crazy Hood Productions/Redefinition Records. I'm sure a lot of you would've expected me to post a De La Soul album, particularly 3 Feet High and Rising, which was also released on this date, but admittedly, although I'm a huge fan, I don't own any of their records, because prices for previous pressings have just gotten ridiculous, but rest assured, that will come in the future. But, this isn't about that. Now that I got that explanation out of the way, I would like to present to you a special album that was carefully curated by Miami's Mixtape King, and co-host of the extremely popular podcast, Drink Champs, DJ EFN. This underground legend assembled a roster of icons and newcomers that range from King Tee and Milk Dee, to Smif-N-Wessun and Killer Mike, and even the Drink Champs host himself, N.O.R.E. Not to mention a lot of local flavor from ¡MAYDAY!, Gunplay, Denzel Curry, Trick Daddy, Skam2? (who also provided the cover illustration), Dynas, Heckler, Society, Mother Superia, and even MC-turned-director, (Michael) Garcia! If that's not enough, the production is handled by local greats, such as Hazardis Soundz, The Guild (Chip Williams & DaVincci), Miami Beat Wave, BeatsNDaHood, NonMS, as well as the legendary DJ Premier, and Buckwild! This is a limited edition silver vinyl double LP. #djefn #anothertime #limitededition #silvervinyl #coloredvinyl #stereo2lp #crazyhood #crazyhoodproductions #chp #redefinitionrecords #hiphop #hiphoprecords #hiphopvinyl #hiphopwax #vinylrecords #recordcollection #vinylcollection #waxcollection #drumwax https://www.instagram.com/p/CpWenWcsGAM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tvardovsky - Brain Code (Mobilize 'Neuroscience' Remix)
youtube
Tvardovsky comes to Particles out of the Ukraine, emerging as one of the most promising progressive acts in the region after appearing in 2011’s Winter Particles compilation and culminating in the Beatport Progressive Top 100 best-selling “Code” EP at the end of last year. He’s now at the helm of his own music label, Stereo Paradise, and his own radio show, Secret Reality.
The deeply melodic “Brain Code” gets remixed now by two fast rising Particles residents each, like Tvardovsky, at the helm of their own respective music labels at Proton: Argentina’s Santiago Garcia, founder of Baires, and Mobilize, founder of Mobilisiemusik.
Directed by Jay Epoch A&R by Renee Ugarteche Mastered by Santiago Garcia, Cid Inc. Designed by Royal Sapien
DJ Feedback: Derek Howell (Master Lux Co., microCastle) Great sounds! Digging both.
Hernan Cattaneo very good!

-Didn’t see live, but was in the vicinity or interacted-
I was at a record signing for the Pretenders at Licorice Pizza at La Cumbre Mall in Santa Barbara and met the band when I was 10 months old or so. I don’t remember it, but Chrissie said I was going to be a drummer. I guess I was banging on the table.
Should have been at the Where The Streets Have No Name video shoot, but U2 started early thanks to the LAPD and I missed it by an hour. People were still hanging out at the corner in downtown LA when I got there. Eventually got around to seeing U2.
I had an email exchange with Brian Kehew of The Moog Cookbook sometime around 1999.
I camped at the next campsite over from Gyl Bonus, guitar player for The B Foundation. I haven’t seen them live, but I hear it’s a great show.
I had a ticket to see Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes with Fu Manchu in Irvine in 2000, but Jimmy cancelled the tour. Technically, I have seen both bands, so this should not be in this section.
Was invited to the recording of the live section of the “Enemies” EP by Frank Jordan, but I had to work my shift at Kmart. I should have gone.
A friend offered to give me his ticket and could have made it to the last half of a Pearl Jam concert in Irvine, but was too lazy. I should have gone.
Back to Santa Barbara, Bob Marley & the Wailers played a concert and I was in the same city at the same time but I was 3 months old or some shit. I wish I could have gone and been capable of enjoying it.
I was in close proximity to Johnny Halliday and his wife when they arrived at LAX a few years ago. Johnny was known as the “French Elvis”. There was a good amount of paparazzi, so I may be in the background of a picture in a French tabloid.
Met the band Spacetrucker at the Sky Valley sign on their tour which included Stoned and Dusted the next day. They gave me a free copy of their first album and the whole experience was amazing and magical.
Have been the presence of Dandy Brown, Jesika Von Rabbit and Lee Joseph in Palm Springs, and Arthur Seay at the Sky Valley sign.
I am friends with the drummer of Overwhelming Colorfast, of which Weezer once opened for, and who opened for The Ramones.
I am considered family by extremely close family friends of which one was the drummer for Out Vile Jelly and Idaho, and also made some great songs under the name twodoggarage.

The first step is always one of the most important to take, specially when we're talking about getting your first synth.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, to get you started on the right foot, here are the top 5 synths for begginers:⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🎵Korg Minilogue: There are a few reasons why it’s a great synth for someone who’s just getting started, it’s polyphonic, meaning you can play multiple notes at once. Also it has dedicated knobs for pretty much every function! So, if you’re serious about committing to learning and using synths it’s completely worth it.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🎵Arturia MicroBrute: This one's your best option if you’re looking for a very hands-on, analog synth. It has an incredibly classic sound to it, all packaged in a very compact box. The MicroBrute really is the perfect synth if you’re just looking for an instrument with raw synthesis capabilities that’s easy to understand and play with.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🎵Korg Volca Series: This is the second most affordable synth on the list. There are many versions of the Volca and each have their own uses. Each Volca comes as a dedicated synth engine for a specific purpose. Regardless of which, they all sound really good and come with tons of synthesis capability in a very compact and affordable package.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🎵Roland Boutique Series: Roland is well known for designing several synths that defined a generation of music. That’s why this series is so cool, it’s a handful of compact synths that re-create the sounds of their classic vintage counterparts.⠀ 🎵Teenage Enginering Pocket Operator Series: If you’re looking for an affordable way to have fun making weird sounds by playing with raw synthesis, this is the one for you. It's a synth that’s purely intended for fun and experimentation.⠀ Source: @landrmusic⠀

Prom, BAU-style
Dr. Spencer Reid/reader
Summary: This is a part two for Promposal, so read that if you haven't!! Y/n and Spencer go to the prom that Y/n and Garcia have planned for the BAU team.
words: 1.4k
warnings: none to my knowledge, super cute and fluffy!
a/n: sorry this took a while, i’m getting ready to move in to college so i’ll probably be updating a little less frequently. let me know if you enjoy this though!!
tagging @malfoys-demigod as requested :)))
Y/n feels Spencer’s strong hand holding hers as the two of them walk with Garcia to the Quantico parking lot. They made a quick pit stop in order for Spencer to change into the beautiful suit that the girls had picked out for him, and now they were on their way to Garcia’s, excitement thrumming under Y/n’s skin. Spencer doesn’t drive to work, so he and Y/n decide to drive together in Y/n’s car while Garcia drives her own. They wave to each other before getting into said respected cars. There’s a comfortable silence present within the small confines of Y/n’s car as she follows Garcia out of the parking lot, only broken when Spencer speaks for the first time since he had emerged out of the bathroom upstairs.
“Is it ridiculous that I’m really nervous for some reason? It’s like I’m the scared high schooler that I would have been had I gone to prom when I was younger, which is so silly.” Spencer turns his head to gaze out the window after admitting this.
“Oh Spence, it’s not silly. To be honest, I’m a little bit nervous as well. It’s not as much about the prom though, but the person…” Y/n blushes furiously, she hadn’t really meant to confess her feelings to Spencer, especially not so early in the evening, but it had kind of slipped out and well, now it was out there. Y/n focuses on the road in front of her, anxiously awaiting Spencer’s response which never seems to come, the comfortable silence now filled with tension that Y/n has no idea what to do with.
“You mean, you’re nervous about…me? Y/n, why would you ever be nervous about me! If anything, I should be nervous to spend time with you. I mean, you’re like the most gorgeous person…ever.” Spencer says softly, Y/n can feel his eyes on her even without turning her face away from the road.
“Spencer…I like you…a lot. That’s why I’m nervous for the prom. I’ll admit though, I’m a lot less nervous now that I’ve told you that.” The silence in the car once again changes, going from tense to filled with excitement.
“Y/n, I like you too! That’s why I’m so excited but also nervous for this evening. We are going to have such a good time though.” Spencer says and Y/n feels the rest of her nerves dissolve, immediately being replaced with extreme excitement as she pulls into Garcia’s driveway, seeing Garcia waving from outside of her own car.
“Well Spencer, welcome to prom.” Y/n says as Spencer gets out of the car and walks around to Y/n’s door to open it for her, what a gentleman.
“Welcome to your prom as well my dear.” Spencer says, Y/n notices the deeper tone his voice takes on and it sends a shiver up her spine, is this a hidden side to Spencer Reid? Y/n thinks she wants to find out. She exits the car and takes Spencer’s hand being offered to her, them making their way into the house, Garcia following practically squealing in delight at the sight of her two friends finally admitting their feelings for each other. They enter through the door and are immediately greeting with the other members of team all yelling
“Welcome to prom!”
Spencer looks around in bewilderment at the decorations that Y/n and Garcia had worked hard to put up in order to transform the room. Derek walks forward and places his hand on Spencer’s shoulder.
“Well pretty boy, you finally made it, and you’re a lucky man.” He says glancing at Y/n, she knows he’s just teasing Spencer, her and Derek are extremely close and they’re always taking shots at each other.
“Leave him alone Morgan.” Y/n responds casually, laughing with her friend.
“Alright my crime-solving friends of the BAU, we gather here tonight to celebrate prom, something our good doctor here was not able to experience because he’s smarter than all of us combined.” The team laughs, Y/n knew having Garcia be the DJ would be a good idea. “We’re going to play a slow song first, because that’s what it’s all about isn’t it, romanceeeeeee.” Y/n and Spencer glance at each other with light blushes on their faces as Garcia exaggerates the word romance, a word that has been on both of their minds all night. Slow music starts playing over the speakers and the team members begin to pair off to dance. Garcia and JJ begin to dance, as well as Morgan and Emily, while Hotch opts to stand to the side and drink a cup of punch, often choosing to be the stoic team leader even when he’s allowing himself to have fun.
“Will you dance with me Spencer?” Y/n says and Spencer automatically nods, following her to the middle of the floor where their friends are. Spencer places his hand around Y/n’s waist and they place their hands on each other’s shoulders, beginning to sway to the music. They’re looking into each others eyes and their friends seem to disappear. “I didn’t know you were such a dancer Spencer.” Y/n says teasingly, but Spencer really is quite a bit more graceful than she had expected.
“Only because I’m dancing with the most beautiful girl in the room.” He says, smiling shyly. Way too early, the slow song ends and more upbeat music begins, the team dancing and having fun for a prolonged period of time, getting lost in the nostalgic joy of being in high school, enjoying their time with their friends and forgetting about the horrid scenes they are accustomed to seeing on a daily basis. After a while, Garcia makes her way back up to the DJ booth
“Alright you kids, it’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for, it’s time to see who our prom king and queen are!” Spencer looks at Y/n in surprise, not expecting this. “Drum roll everyone…our prom king is our very own Dr. Spencer Reid!! And our prom queen is Agent Y/n Y/l/n!” The team members all clap as Spencer and Y/n walk up to Garcia to get their totally real crowns that Y/n and Garcia totally didn’t buy at party city. “Now the king and queen will have their first dance, clear the floor for the happy couple please.” Spencer and Y/n make their way to the center of the room once again and they begin to sway to the music as they had done earlier in the evening. Spencer leans forward to whisper in Y/n’s ear.
“You look so beautiful Y/n, I can not say it enough, thank you so much for putting this all together, I’m the luckiest man in the world.” Y/n smiles, she usually gets embarrassed rather quickly, but dancing here with Spencer in front of all their friends, she feels extremely safe.
“It was my pleasure Spencer, getting to spend an entire night with you, how could I turn that down, I’m so glad you had fun.” Before long the dance is over and it’s sadly time for the BAU team to call it a night as it’s getting late. They say their goodbyes and thank yous to Garcia for hosting the party, making their way out to their cars. Y/n and Spencer begin their short drive to Spencer’s apartment, they don’t speak on the way there, but it’s that comfortable silence once again, comfortable like a warm blanket that Y/n wants to wrap around herself and sink into. When they arrive Y/n gets out of the car to walk with Spencer up to his door.
“Thank you again Y/n, it was a perfect night but uh, there is one thing that would make it more perfect, can I kiss you?” Y/n smiles, leaning forward and gently placing her lips on Spencer’s. He gives a small noise of surprise but then sinks into the kiss, placing his hand on Y/n’s shoulders as they continue kissing. They pull away reluctantly, as they are standing outside of Spencer’s apartment in formal wear kissing at 11 pm on a Friday, it’s probably a strange look to anybody passing by.
“Goodnight Spencer, have an amazing night.” Y/n says before turning to return to her car.
“Text me when you get home sweetheart.” Spencer says, watching the beautiful woman in front of him as she retreats away from his building. Y/n is driving home lost in her thoughts. She was right, this definitely is the start of something absolutely magical.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my late, great friend + part-time mentor Rick Anderson (The Tubes), the 1971 Bangla Desh concerts, Lionel Bart, incredible guitarist Tommy Bolin, my well-remembered and gone-too-soon cousin-in-law Pam Brenneman (RIP), Geoff Britton, Rob Buck (10,000 Maniacs), the late, great Boz Burrell, Jim Carroll, William Clark, Colorado (the state), Coolio, Rick Coonce (Grass Roots), Denny Cordell, Robert Cray, Joe Elliott, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Joe Friday, André Gagnon, Jerry Garcia, Dhani Harrison, Geoffrey Holder, Henrietta Lacks, Paddy Maloney (The Chieftains), Herman Melville, Jason Momoa, MTV (1981), Yoshinao Nakada, Taapsee Pannu, Michael Penn, Edith Pretty, Mrunal Thakur, and my friend and musical colleague evinrude a.k.a. Kevin Spyker. Starting around 1997 I worked as a bassist-singer and producer on some his recordings + we performed a string of concerts as evinrude—the name of a famous cartoon dragonfly, which applied to Kevin’s powerhouse abilities as a singer-songwriter, multi-media artist, and DJ. He also sang on a couple of my tracks, and I recall a balcony concert we did at Lycoming College.

Line of Fire
PART 1 of 2
Spencer Reid x BAUfem! Reader
Category: Angst with Fluff and a Happy Ending
TW: teen unsub, facing unsub, implied sex, implied unprotected sex, bullying, pregnancy, addiction recovery
Based on a request by @saspencereid : I had an idea for a Spencer prompt that I think would be great to read, if you are ever up for it? I think I've seen it in romantic comedies, maybe? Something like Spencer and reader are friends but after a party at Rossi's (or wherever) they hook up and she gets pregnant and they have to navigate their relationship and the baby situation from there...fluff obvs! Tysm!
So, here’s the thing...this most likely isn’t what you want, and I’m sorry for that, but I started writing it and got really inspired. I think that I’ve actually read a fic that is probably closer to your original request and, as we can all see based on the rest of my Tumblr, I write a lot of angsty stuff. Who knows? I might just be an angsty gal, anyway - this is a rewrite of the episode “Elephant’s Memory” in Season 3 (if you haven’t seen it, stop reading this right this second and go watch it; it will tear you to shreds, but it’s so very good) and actually goes back a few episodes before that as well. Canonically I guess this fits into Season 3 from the end of episode 8, “Lucky”, to the end of episode 16, “Elephant’s Memory”(this is long, as is everything I write, but I promise this is not eight episode’s worth of content; we skip around a fair bit). I loved this request, but as I started working on fluffier concepts, nothing was clicking and this is what I came up with; it does have a happy ending, though...promise! This is part 1 of 2 and is the first purposeful two parter I’ve ever done, so...I hope you enjoy it!
Part 2 should be up tomorrow! Love you to bits xx
~ “Man is not what he thinks he is, he is what he hides.” - André Malraux ~
After one of his first successful cases with the team and in an attempt to get to know the team better, SSA David Rossi decided to take the team for a night out. And with Rossi buying, the drinks flowed like a river. The last case, a sadistic psychopathic serial killer who was killing women in order to test out cannibalistic recipes with their bodies, was also a bit of a tough one, meaning everyone needed a release. Derek went off on his own, not telling anyone where he was heading and Garcia had a date, but JJ, Emily, you, Spencer, and even Hotch had all decided to head to a local bar with Rossi. There was music, controlled by a present, but non-annoying DJ, a decent selection of liquor, and even a dance floor. At around 11, the music changes and the dance floor, previously full of people at varying levels of intoxication, clears abruptly.
“It is the slow dance hour, my good people,” the DJ announces over the speaker. “Grab a loved one and head to the floor!”
“That,” Emily says, standing up at their table, “is my cue to leave.”
“Oh, no,” Rossi disagrees, standing and offering his hand. “You and I are going to take a turn on the dance floor, Agent Prentiss.” Emily laughs and accepts the offer. “And the four of you better follow,” Rossi adds, turning back to the four of you at the table. Ever the gentleman, Hotch offers his hand to JJ, who accepts it with a sweet smile. Hotch makes eye contact with Spencer as he and JJ retreat to the floor, eyes flicking to you with a smirk.
Was he that obvious? Spencer knows that Derek knows how he feels about you, but he wasn’t aware that anyone else knew. And he’d really only told Derek because he’d had a rather intimate dream revolving around you while sharing a room with Derek on a case. And, unbeknownst to Spencer, he’s apparently just as talkative in his sleep as he is in real life. Derek teased him about it, sure, but a healthy crush on you isn’t exactly surprising.
You’d joined the team right after Emily and just before Rossi. You were not only good at the job, but a genuine friend to everyone on the team and loyal to an absolute fault. You’d taken the time to learn about everyone, asked permission about things that might have boundaries (like asking Spencer’s permission to call him “Genius”), and were never condescending or even mildly short with anyone, despite the tempestuous nature of the job. Spencer’s never met someone who, on less than an hour of sleep, could manage to talk to a victim’s family with such skill that you’d both comforted them and got the necessary information out of them without causing offense. If ever pressed to talk about you, the best Spencer could do - without absolutely going apeshit extolling about your beauty and your skills as a profiler - was to say you’re really sweet. Which is not a lie, either. You’re incredibly sweet, actually, which is one of the reasons Spencer is suddenly vastly uncomfortable as the two of you remain, swimming in the awkwardness of being left alone together or dancing, and he can’t decide which is worse. Truly, he’d love to dance with you, to hold you close, to maybe attempt to tell you how much he’s grown to like you, but he doesn’t want you to dance with him out of some sense of obligation. You’ve known each other for nearly a year at this point and he cares about you as a teammate, sure, but he’s fostered an affection for you that, clearly, wasn’t as subtle as he’d hoped.
“So,” you say, scooting slightly closer to Spencer in the booth, “not much of a dancer, are you?”
Spencer stares at you, unsure of what to say, “Um-”
“Unless I’m wrong,” you whisper, leaning closer, “and you’re a regular Gene Kelly.” You laugh slightly and Spencer manages a slight smile, a breathy chuckle. He can’t focus now. You smell too nice and look too pretty and you’re very close to him. “Is something wrong, Genius?”
“No,” he answers, quickly, barely recognizing his own voice. “W-why?”
“You seem to forget that I’m also a profiler,” you say, still quiet, moving slightly closer. “And you, Doctor Reid, are nervous. I wonder why.”
“D-do...do you have any th-theories?” Spencer asks, inwardly cringing at how utterly nerdy that sounded. You calling him by his honorific...does things to him. At work when you call him ‘Doctor Reid’ he can temper his reaction to you, focusing on the case or professionalism, but, in this environment, away from the office, with you so close to him, he can’t hide it at all. He’s not great at reading social cues, but...are you...if he’s right, you’re...kind of flirting with him? Dare he imagine such a possibility? He’s absolutely thrilled when you giggle with delight at his slightly nerdy question.
“I do, indeed, Genius,” you tease, eyes roaming his face. “I think that you’re nervous, not because we’re supposed to be dancing, but because you’re left here...alone with me. Do I scare you, Genius?”
“Y-you don’t s-scare me,” Spencer barely manages to rasp out, embarrassed at the fact that he definitely sounds scared.
“Are you sure about that?” you ask, not a hint of malice in your voice.
“You’re...you’re far too s-sweet for that,” he admits, feeling a blush crawl up his neck.
“Oh,” you gasp, your eyes widening. “You think I’m sweet?”
“Of course I do,” Spencer whispers, suddenly very worried he’s given the wrong impression. “And I’m not scared of you...you make me nervous, though.”
“Because I’m...sweet?” you ask, a glint he can’t quite place in your eyes. There’s an ever-so-slight smirk teasing your adorable mouth as well.
“Yes,” he admits, trying hard to stop looking at your lips - a losing battle, truly.
“You liked my theory so much,” you begin, eyeing him cautiously as you scoot so close that your now sitting directly next to him, thigh to thigh. “How would you feel about a litte...experiment?”
“An experiment?” he repeats, now fully staring at your mouth.
You hum in response, your eyes now flicking from his mouth to his eyes. He catches your eyes again and his blush deepens. “Could I...could I kiss you, genius?” Any hint of slyness is gone from your tone and your eyes are boring into his with such docility, such damn genuine care, that he can hardly finagle a reply from his own brain.
“Y-yes,” Spencer breathes. You take a steadying breath and gently place your hands on his shoulders before slotting your lips over his. For only a moment, Spencer doesn’t kiss you back. You lose your nerve and pull away for a second, only for Spencer’s hands to shoot out from their previously useless state and cup your face, pulling you to him with such fervor that it’s shocking neither of you gains an injury. After what feels like a small eternity and yet not enough time at all, Spencer pulls back panting for air. “W-was that...um....did your experiment go well?”
“Better than well,” you whisper, placing a chaste kiss on his lips, before kissing a small line of kisses down his jaw.
Spencer lets out a quiet gasp, allowing his hands to roam to your waist and into your hair, “I’m-I’m...I don’t understand. Do you...did you....um..um-”
“You know I like you, right? Like, I have crush on you?” you whisper into his neck before pressing a kiss into it. He barely stifles a moan as his logic attempts to grasp at the situation.
“I think it’s fairly apparent that I definitely did not know that,” he groans as you nip at his ear. He gains purchase on your shoulders, pulling you away from his neck. You completely pull back, scooting away from him a little.
You don’t meet his eyes and Spencer feels the need to apologize, “Y/N, I-I am...to say flattered would be an understatement, but I’m not going to take advantage of-”
“You wouldn’t be taking advantage of me, Spencer,” your voice, small, but stern, interrupts him. “I’m sorry if I misread-”
“No, no, no,” it was his turn to interrupt you. “That’s not what I mean...I-I...Y/N, I think you’re...you’re...,” he swallows to gain his composure. “You are amazing, but I-I-I just think you might be drunker than you know you are, so this doesn’t-” Your glass is at his lips, cutting him off.
“Drink this, Spencer,” you breathe. “Just trust me.” Spencer eyes you cautiously, his eyes not leaving yours as he takes a sip. He tastes nothing. He stares at you, still not understanding.
“It tastes like nothing,” Spencer says, very confused. Why would you make him drink nothing? “It tastes like nothing!” You just stare at him as he reiterates it more emphatically. You gently nod your head, putting the glass back on the table, and Spencer feels his eyes widen astronomically. “It tastes like nothing.” The realization dawns on him slower than he’s used to. “It’s...have you been drinking water?”
“Just like you, Spencer, for the last two hours,” you nod, nearly smirking. “And, if anything, I only had one cider maybe three and a half hours ago.” You make a clicking noise with your mouth before continuing, shuffling slightly closer to him and placing a hand on top of his on the table, delicately teasing the top of it. He clenches his jaw tightly, so much so he’s worried he could crack a tooth, to control his body’s natural reaction to you. “So...that being said, um...I’m fully sober. You’re fully sober. I told you I like you and you....have yet to respond to that.” You’re biting on your lip when you meet his eyes again.
Spencer takes a deep, stabilizing breath, “I’m...I’m...yes. I like you. So much.”
You giggle again, a sound that goes straight to his groin. “Thank God for that,” you whisper, staring at his lips for just a moment too long before looking back up at his eyes. “Would you...maybe...wanna come home with me?”
Spencer gulps so hard it almost hurts as he nods vigorously, “Please.”
Once the two of you have made your goodbyes, telling everyone your giving Spencer a ride home, you hurry your way outside, shivering in the slight cold. Spencer wraps his cardigan around your shoulders, and you nod at the gesture. It affects him more than it should, really, seeing you in his deep blue cardigan. Jesus, man, it’s a cardigan, he thinks, but he can’t help but smile as the two of you pile into your car. The ride to your house is....awkward, if not somewhat uneventful as the build up from the bar slowly dissipates, never fully leaving. You don’t live very far away, thankfully. You live in a cottage, almost a townhouse, and the door is painted bright blue. You open the door and turn on the porch light, then the hall light. The hallway is lined with a light yellow wallpaper with pink seashells dotting it. There’s a small, light blue table by the door where you drop your keys and purse. You have yet to take off his cardigan, in fact, you slide your arms through the sleeves, kick off your heels and walk through to what he assumes is the kitchen. A photo of you with a woman Spencer can, based on shared features, assume is your mother, is in a small frame on the blue table. A print of a Degas painting is hanging on the wall mostly taken up by the entrance to the kitchen, as well as a print of a Marina Cano wildlife print next to front door. A closet was across from the front doorway and across from the entrance to the kitchen was the entrance to the living room, then a door to, what he assumes is your bedroom.
“Do you own this?” he calls, stepping further into the hallway to observe the full bookshelves, the framed diplomas, and the small emerald green sofa in the living room.
“No I rent it,” you call back. “Do you want anything to drink?”
He follows through to the kitchen. Everything in the kitchen was largely out of date, but charming. And, in the quiet of the night, surrounded by the seventies kitchen and encumbered in his cardigan, you look remarkably charming as well.
“Are you having anything?” he asks leaning against the wall molding around the entrance to the kitchen.
“I was going to have a ginger tea,” you reply, turning to face him as he enters the tiny kitchen.
“That sounds perfect,” he smiles.
You smile back, turning to open a cabinet, pulling out another giant mug and tossing a tea bag into it, filling a baby blue kettle with water and sitting it on the stovetop, turning it on as you do. You then stare at him, pulling yourself up to sit on top of the counter.
“So,” he begins, crossing into the space and leaning against the counter next to you. “Are you a fan of Edgar Degas?”
“Oh,” you reply, "I see. Doing a wee bit of profiling, are we, genius?”
“Can’t be helped,” he chuckles.
“Well, I’m sure your asking because I definitely don’t seem like the type to covet art prints like that, but,” you cross your legs for effect, “to answer your question: kind of, I guess. It’s more nostalgia than anything.”
“Nostalgia?”
“Yeah, I used to take ballet and my parents bought that for me when I was, like, 8, maybe? It used to hang in my room. When I moved to Virginia, it seemed like it might be nice to have something like that to remind me of home.”
Spencer nods, touched by your slight sentimentality, though not at all surprised by it.
“Plus,” you add, “I can’t live in a place and not decorate it, even if I’m just renting it. That’s way too boring.”
“You’re anything but boring,” he insists, standing up fully and turning toward you.
“I wish everyone thought that,” you laugh, self-consciously. He scoots slightly closer to you.
“I hate to tell you this, but they do,” Spencer whispers.
“They don’t-”
“Oh, but they do,” he breathes. He puts a hand over yours on the counter. “You are absolutely enchanting.” He doesn’t dare look in her face. This was forward, this was a move. He isn’t used to making moves, small or otherwise. To his delight, you lift your thumb, ever so slightly, and rub the side of his hand.
“Enchanting, am I?” You’re staring at him, he can feel it and finally meets your eyes. He moves quickly, caging you in as he places his hands on either side of your thighs on the countertop, leaning steadily closer to you.
“Enchanting,” he reiterates. He moves to kiss you and the kettle goes off.
“I’m so sorry!” you gasp. He backs out of your way quickly as you jump off the counter, blushing madly as you pull the kettle off the hot eye, turning off the stove as well.
Spencer doesn’t have a whole lot of hope in romantic moments of this variety, but he knows he will regret it forever if he doesn’t seize this moment. The kettle can ruin it for a second, but he can at least try to fix it forever. Fairly boldly for his standards, Spencer pushes away from the counter and crosses to stand directly behind you. You haven’t turned around, staring at the kettle for a long moment, realizing his presence behind you, before turning to face him. You cheeks are flushed and your pupils are dilated. You lick your lips and drop your eyes to your fiddling hands. Spencer puts a gentle finger under your chin, tilting your face until your eyes meet his, trying not to appear as nervous as he feels. You smile up at him, and, with every modicum of confidence he has in him, he takes your face in his hands and kisses you. To his relief, you kiss him back. He shifts slightly, attempting to push you further against the stove.
You whine against his lips, pulling away but running your hands up his chest, whispering as you go. Whether it’s the lack of oxygen or the elation he feels at finally kissing you after all these months, Spencer doesn’t hear what you say.
“What? I’m sorry,” he pants, his gaze flitting from your eyes to your lips and back again.
“The stovetop is still hot,” you repeat, whispering through a slight giggle.
“Oh,” he stutters, pulling you closer to him, away from the offending stovetop. “Um-”
“Here,” you whisper, pushing him against the fridge on the opposite wall of the tiny kitchen, gloriously taking charge by wrapping your arms around his neck and kissing him again. Spencer grins into your mouth as he runs his tongue along the seam of your lips, the tone of the kiss becoming decidedly French. After a few minutes, he pulls away and you moan slightly, a moan that turns nearly feral as he moves his kisses to your neck.
“I knew you’d be good at this,” you rasp, in a tone that, to his mind, happily denotes your distraction in the moment.
“Am I?” he teases, breathing the words into the tender skin of your neck, before nipping at it, gently.
“I-I should say s-so,” you reply, your voice faltering as he sucks a mark onto your neck. He smiles, nearly smirking as you shrug off his cardigan and unbutton the top three buttons on his shirt. His hands find purchase in your hair as he brings your lips to his again.
“I was wondering,” he whispers, pulling away and looking into your eyes, parsing his fingers through your hair, “if you’d like to…” He finds it rather difficult to complete this particular statement. Thank God you’re an intellectual because after staring at him in brief confusion, you seemingly understand, a huge smile adorning your face.
“Oh, God, yes,” you laugh, pecking a quick kiss to his lips, then pulling him by the hand to your room. You shut the door and pull him to you, lavishing his neck, now, and it’s so heavenly it takes him a moment to gain any form of composure. He pulls away again, breathless.
“Just to be sure,” he whispers, “you want to have sex with me, yes?”
“Yes, genius,” you cry, pulling him down onto your bed in a fit of laughter quickly quashed by kisses, moans, and much less innocent, but no less enjoyable touches.
~~~
Hours later, he stares into the darkness of your room. Your figure is drawn up next to him, your head laying on his chest as you gently breathe in and out, lightly dozing.
Spencer isn’t tired. He should be. He should be exhausted. But he feels...a euphoria he’s never felt, especially in the more intimate parts of his life. He had fun. Since when had sex become fun? Looking back to his first awkward fumbles all he could recall was nerves and awkward stares, the occasional, painful giggle. But you are different. You’re passionate and funny. You’re vocal about your pleasure in a way that makes him want to work harder to hear it again. The way you feel, the way he feels sheathed within you...Spencer doesn’t really believe in a higher power, or the afterlife. He’s a man of science, of pragmatism, but being with you, bringing each other to the height of pleasure is the closest he’s ever been to heaven, he’s sure of it.
“Hey,” you whisper into his chest, startling him. “You should get some sleep.” He freezes. Do you want him to go? He doesn’t want to leave. As though you heard his thoughts, you wrap your arms around his chest and kiss the edge of his jaw. “I can practically hear your mind moving, Genius. Go to sleep.”
Spencer tightens his arms around you, nuzzling the top of your head as your breathing evens out again. He might be getting ahead of himself, but if this is the type of passion he’s been missing out on, if this is the love he’s been looking for...he never wants to let it go.
~~~
It’s awkward. He can’t deny it’s awkward. Spencer feels like you know he’s watching you, but either you’re too distracted to care or you’re genuinely unconcerned, and he can’t decide which is worse. He wishes he could focus more on the task at hand, but, truly, Hotch and Rossi had left you, Spencer, Derek, Emily, and JJ at the hospital while they went to Garcia’s home, or, rather, the crime scene. And, really, now that he and Morgan had interviewed her and she’d been released to go home, there wasn’t much else to do but stare at you.
You’d shot up so quickly when your phone went off that Spencer almost had a heart attack. You’d read the text from JJ and turned to him, all teary eyes and alarm, unable to make any noise beyond a sob. He’d wrapped his arms around you as you cried, pulling you to his chest as his phone went off only moments later. Removing one arm from you he’d leaned back to grab his phone, reading an identical text from JJ: “Garcia’s been shot. She’s in intensive care. No word yet. Get to hospital now.”
You’d arrived together, but everyone was, rightfully, focused on Garcia’s progress in surgery and hadn’t noticed. You’d sat with Emily while Spencer had waited for Derek to arrive, updating him and prepping for the delicacy of the cognitive interview with Garcia. But now, nearly 36 hours later, as Derek prepares to take Garcia home, and Emily bums a ride home from JJ, Spencer watches you carefully, a protective instinct taking over. Hotch, determined to solve Garcia’s case before moving on to anything else, has instructed them all to go home and get a good night’s rest before starting bright and early the next morning. Since Penelope’s doing okay and safe (or, at the very least, safer) with Derek for the evening, Spencer doesn’t feel guilty about wanting to spend time with you right now. As JJ and Emily leave, you glance toward Penelope’s room where she and Derek are waiting for the final release papers from the doctor before finally looking at Spencer.
“So,” you begin, “um...how are you?” Spencer lets out a breathy chuckle and you look up at him, curiously. “What?”
“I...I just- we’ve been here for, what? Like, a day and a half now?” he asks, wiping a hand over his face and plopping into the seat beside you, staring at the clock. “To be exact it’s been 35 hours, 56 minutes, and 12 seconds, and you ask how I am?”
“Yeah,” you mumble, “is that...stupid?”
“Oh, God, no,” Spencer amends. “It’s just...this is the sweetness I was talking about earlier...or yesterday?”
“Oh,” you nod. “Thanks, then, I guess.” There was small, but awkward silence. “You still haven’t answered the question.”
“I’m fine,” Spencers answers. “Actually, though...please don’t take this the wrong way, but...could I take you home?”
You smirk, letting out a breathy chuckle, “Nearly 36 hours and you’re still making moves on me, Genius?”
“No,” he chuckles, before he allows his tone to become more serious. “I mean, I’m not at all opposed to...that, but...after what’s happened to Garcia, I’m not...I feel like I shouldn’t send you home alone.”
You look at him, slightly in awe. “That’s really, really sweet of you. And, as long as it’s not an imposition for you that would...actually be great, Genius.”
“Nothing is an imposition when it comes to you, Y/N,” Spencer breathes, boldly taking your hand. Even though he knows that sounded corny, he means every single word of it. You smile at him and the two of you stand up, saying goodbye to Penelope and Derek, telling them that you’re seeing each other home, even though both of you are aware that you’ll likely end up in the same place.
And, sure enough, when the two of you climb into your car, you turn to Spencer and ask, “Your place or mine?”
“You hosted the events last time,” Spencer quips.
“So, your turn, then, Doctor Reid?” you joke, but Spencer clinches his jaw.
“If you keep calling me that, we aren’t going to make it far,” he swallows. You start the car, looking at him with raised eyebrows before backing out of the spot.
“Honorifics, huh?” you ask, after a few moments as you begin to head to his apartment. “That’s what does it for ya, huh, Genius?”
“Well,” Spencer begins, considering his options. He could be honest or he could be flirtatious...or maybe both. “There are few things about you that don’t ‘do it’ for me, Y/N, but, I don’t exactly mind being called ‘Doctor’.”
You laugh, but then you’re quiet again, focusing on the road ahead. His apartment is further away than yours and you’ve only been there a couple of times, mostly to drop him off. Just as he’s about to offer up directions, you suddenly, quietly, say, “We should probably talk about what happened.”
“You’re right,” Spencer agrees, clearing his throat. “Um, where do we start?”
“I don’t really know,” you admit, “where do you usually start in discussions like this?”
“I don’t usually have discussions like this, Y/N,” Spencer confesses, shyly.
“Well, neither do I, actually,” you reveal. You’re quiet again. Spencer chances a look at you, determined not to stare at you as you can’t do the same to him. You’re biting your lip which isn’t exactly calming his libido, but the nervousness in the rest of your face definitely does.
“If I may,” he ventures, running a hand through his hair, “I really like you. And I really enjoyed sleeping with you...it meant...it means a lot to me. You mean a lot to me.”
“You mean a lot to me, too,” you whisper. “I don’t...I’m not sure how well this would work....not because of you, but...it’s just-”
“Our job,” Spencer finishes for you. He wipes a hand over his face as you pull into his apartment complex, parking and sitting for a moment before Spencer decides to continue. “The way I see it, we have two options here. One, we give it a go. We see each other for a while...and we don’t have to tell anyone yet. I don’t know how you feel about it, but I’m not really one to...see other people-”
“I don’t really want to be with anyone else, Spencer,” you agree, quietly, not looking at him.
He smiles at that, reaching over and squeezing your hand. You squeeze back and he has the courage to continue, “Okay. So, we just start dating each other...and maybe....don’t tell the team?”
“What’s the other option?” you ask, still looking at your entwined hands over the center console.
“We...go our separate ways,” Spencer mumbles, almost hoping you don’t hear it. He doesn’t really want that to be an option, but he knows it has to be, for both your sakes. Your gaze moves from your interlocked hands to meet his eyes.
“I don’t really think that’s an option for me, Genius,” you breathe.
Spencer lets out a relieved breath he didn’t know he was holding, releasing your hand only to cup your face in his hands, pressing his lips to yours for a few moments before pulling away. “It’s not an option for me either, Y/N.”
You smile up at him and he presses a quick kiss to your nose. A mischievous glint alights in your eyes.
“What are your opinions on car sex, Doctor Reid?” you ask, cheekily.
“I’m up for anything as long as you keep calling me that,” he replies. He presses a chaste kiss to lips before pulling away again. “However, I do have a rather comfortable bed only a few feet away.”
“Lead the way,” you whisper, barely containing your giggles as Spencer attempts to subtly hurry you into his bedroom.
~~~
For the most part, Spencer is able to disconnect from his work. A good deal of that ability came during recovery from his dilaudid addiction. By separating the two parts of his life, work and private, he is able to leave work at work, even some of the rougher cases. Cases are always sensitive. That’s just the territory of working with the Behavioral Analysis Unit, of being a profiler, frankly, but some hit harder than others. Cases with children are always difficult, any time the profile’s off and they have to correct it, it’s harder, and sometimes they aren’t able to save everyone and the lives lost haunt far longer than the lives saved. However, sometimes a case seemingly ends well and it remains with them far longer than expected. It was an odd case in Chula Vista, California. It started out, seemingly, as an abduction case. Abductions are always stressful; it feels like the team is running against the clock more aggressively in these, especially for Spencer, who couldn’t forget the national statistics on abductions to murders if he tried. This one was bizarre, however, as the BAU’s cases so often tended to be. In fact, it would be more appropriate to categorize all of their cases as bizarre, allowing for more surprise when they had ordinary, quickly completed cases. The case was strange, to be sure, but it wasn’t the sort that usually haunted Spencer.
It’s one of Spencer’s great insecurities that he isn’t exactly a people person. JJ is, for sure, it’s one of her great skills as a communications liaison, and most profilers are, typically; you and Emily have a particular skill for it. Spencer, on the other hand, isn’t bad at it, per se. He connects well with kids, typically, which he’s secretly proud of (you’d actually recently acknowledged this skill as well, a fact that made his heart soar), but Spencer isn’t exactly brimming with social graces. He’s awkward, in layman’s terms, finding it difficult to turn off the more fantastical parts of his brilliance - the eidetic memory and the speed reading - to assimilate to a more ‘normal’ presence. However, he’s got a pretty great track record in talking down unsubs. That is until this case. The case was complicated: a former hitman’s daughter and her friend had been abducted by a small trio of boys led by a charismatic sociopath, a young man named Ryan. The daughter’s friend was murdered by the gang and her father asked the hitman to go after the boys. One of the boys was murdered by Ryan, the other was badly injured by Jack, the hitman. Spencer had been the first one at the scene, tasked with talking Jack down from murdering Ryan in front of his daughter. And...Jack had killed Ryan, despite Spencer’s best efforts to talk him out of it. Even though he was a murderer, a sociopath, even though Jack and his daughter both survived, Spencer couldn’t shake the guilt he felt. It felt like he had blood on his hands. He felt bad at his job, for the first time in ages.
He doesn’t give it much thought. At least, not as much thought as he definitely should give it. But, as per usual, life gets in the way. There are more cases, reports to fill out, things to do, and the fact that the two of you have been dating. And, to his amazement, it’s going rather well. As the two of you began dating, he found the separation between his work life and his private life even easier than it had been. There was something to look forward to with you as part of his private life, something viable and growing. Something that made coming home more than worth it. He tried, as did you, to stay calm, but it things were going remarkably well. The two of you have even managed to keep it a secret, which is pretty outstanding considering the company you keep. During one case the two of you had even managed to sneak in a rendezvous in Spencer’s room. However, for someone who classifies himself as a realist, Spencer’s a little disappointed in himself when he’s surprised by the sudden downturn the relationship takes, and at his hand, no less. The two of you have just returned from a case in Pittsburgh where victims were being coerced into suicide. Really, Spencer should’ve recognized that this case would have an effect on him. The victims were being targeted from support groups, giving him an unwanted insight into the world of the victims. A world in which he’s uncomfortable lingering. He’s been able to avoid thinking about it for too long. He’d read a book on the jet ride home, planning to meet you at your house later. Spencer’s acutely unaware of his choice to avoid this mental avenue, but he can’t seem to focus.
The two of you are making out on your couch, an activity that usually engrosses his entire being, but not tonight. As his mouth passionately attacks yours, a number flashes through the forefront of his thoughts. A ten digit number. He tries to ignore it, to push it to the side, to focus on you, on the angelic, guttural noises you make, on the gorgeous way you smell, on how soft your skin is. There’s an itch. An itch he can’t reach, it’s within him. He’s not sure what it is. The number is back. What is it? Why is it important? Flashes of a gun going off, the splatter of blood as Jack shot Ryan as Spencer stood there, uselessly, helplessly. Those words: useless, helpless run freely through his head. He pulls back from you briefly shaking his head, trying to rid himself of these distracting thoughts.
“What is it?” you ask, breathlessly.
“Nothing, nothing,” he rasps. “Just a little dizzy.”
“Do we need to stop?” You stare at him so innocently, so genuinely concerned, he’s worried his heart might break right here, right now.
“Not at all, sweetheart,” he reassures, blinking rapidly, trying to get rid of the feeling. “Here.” He renegotiates your positioning, placing himself over you on the couch, hoping being in a more dominant position might focus his mind. The moment his lips are back on yours, he feels the itch, but now he knows what he wants. He wants sex. He wants pleasure. He strengthens his affections on you, kissing down your neck and on your jaw, over your collarbones. He’s working desperately to increase your moans so they’ll drown out his thoughts. The number is back. A phone number. The itch is here. He wants...euphoria. The number...the itch...
And then it hits Spencer, very suddenly. He doesn’t want sex. He wants dilaudid. That’s the euphoria he’s craving. His old dealer’s number is running through his head. He jumps off of you so quickly that he loses his balance and falls the the floor.
“Spencer?” You’re staring at him, sitting up on the sofa and he can see you in periphery, but, for the first time in a while, you’re not at the forefront of his mind. At least not in the typical way. The amount of shame in his system is so overwhelming he can hardly get past it. He’s out of his own body at this point. He realizes he’s standing, assuming he’s gotten himself up at some point. Tears are forming in his eyes and he feels like he can barely see. At some point you’ve crossed to him, reaching out to him.
“Spencer, are you alright-”
“I have to go,” he rasps, the tears falling from his eyes. He’s backing away from you towards your door, trying to remember steps from meetings he hasn’t been to in months. Meetings he hasn’t needed, but suddenly requires, desperately. Trying to push dark and terrifying images and the feeling of guilt out of his mind, which is only accelerating the craving. “I’m...I’m so sorry.”
“What? Spencer, seriously-” You’re stepping closer to him, but he can’t let you touch him right now. He has to get out of here. Now.
“Don’t touch me, Y/N!” A part of Spencer’s brain knows he’s being too loud, but he can’t think straight. “I’m...I’m so sorry.” He can’t bear to look at you, but he can hear you sniffling. He can feel your confusion, and he wants nothing more than to gather you in his arms and kiss the worry lines from your forehead and tell you everything will be all right, but, as the panic increases, his longing for the dizzying, drug-induced high doubles. And, along with it, the images of Ryan being killed, Lindsay’s friend dead in a ditch, every single victim the team hasn’t been able to save in time - all coursing through his brain at a lightening speed. He numbly picks up his bag and crosses to the door. He pauses for a moment and can hear your breath hitching, but he can’t let you try to fix this right now, so he practically runs from your house, slamming the door in his wake.
Heart pounding, Spencer races away, moving faster than he ever has, breaking when he’s about three blocks away, leaning up against a tree, trying to catch his breath. He shuts his eyes, squeezing them tightly. He can’t do this. He can’t bring you into this. You. Sweet, gorgeous, adorable you. You, the woman who makes him happier than he’s been in longer than he cares to admit. You, who’s nicer than anyone he’s ever met. You, who doesn’t deserve to be mixed up with this...this mess again. He needs to find a meeting now. This moment. Before he blindly drives to his dealer’s house or goes to an ATM and gets out enough cash for one of those goddamned glass vials. Before he continues to use you to get over this craving. Just the thought of the fact that he’s been making out with you while thinking about getting high makes him feel so disgusting that he begins to physically retch, violently vomiting bile onto the exposed roots of the tree.
Spencer leans back again, his heart still pounding. He finally manages to look at his watch: 7:34. Again, he has to find a meeting. Now.
