Been meaning to post here more
Originally I wanted to make this a page where I build my portfolio of all the crafts I do, but nowadays I really just want to share all the silly stuff I make and advice on how to make it (and similar things).
Anyway, here's my latest creation. Semi-fingerless gloves. My disability makes it so I don't really have a grip on anything when I wear full gloves/mittens. But it also makes it so I have shit blood circulation, so my pinkies go numb with cold VERY quickly. If folks want the pattern for these, I'll post it, and if there's enough interest, I'll draw up a paid pattern with pictures and details on how to make these custom to your own size/shape. Made with hand-dyed merino wool, purchased from MJ Yarns. I use Furls Crochet ergonomic hooks, which are SUPER comfortable to use

In bitchy crochet opinions today: fuck furls
I got no actual beef. Like, personally. I just find them obnoxious in a way I can't put into words. it might be that every gray blog cunt on the internet uses them when doing stitch tutorials, but they fill me with rage.
I honestly don't even know if they're good. But apparently they put out plastic ones now, so that's how long it's been since I gave a shit.
"Discover the wonder of our ergonomic crochet hooks."
Bitch, I can get ergonomic hooks shaped like fairytale creatures. I don't need your basic bitch shit.

Seriously Furls? What is with them releasing all of these two tone hooks? Is the maple one at least maple? It doesn’t quite specify in the ad I got in the email. It’s too bad I don’t have money to burn right now and I got all the hooks I wanted at the moment because I am curious but seriously what is with all of the two tone hooks they are releasing?

When Twilight had Midsummer, she was surrounded by physicians and servants and her partners. When Pinkie had Blueberry, she was surrounded by doctors, her loves sequestered behind glass. Fluttershy wanted something else when it came to have her child.
She found herself a nice meadow, somewhere calm and quiet, not too far from her cottage where her wives waited anxiously. She adored them, but she didn't want their nerves to set her own off, she wanted her babe to come into the world with no extra stress. Sun knows she had enough stress as it was, she didn't need anyone else's.
Amongst the grass and the flowers, Fluttershy spread out, leathery wings sprawled out making her massive size that much larger. She still wasn't used to her new body even after all these years with it - not that she was much used to her feathery wings, but at least she could hide amongst her fluff, now she was big and awkward and had nowhere to hide.
She didn't feel like hiding right now. There was nothing to hide from, in this moment - for the first time ever - she felt right.
...
"What's taking so long?" Rainbow Dash huffed, her muzzle pressed against the window of Fluttershy's cottage, fogging the glass with her breath. Applejack reached a hoof over, pressing against her shoulder blade to pull her attention.
"Child birth takes time, Dash." Twilight chuckled sweetly, her round wings separating the two squabbling toddlers that sat on the floor. Pinkie jumped into action, playing out the part of entertainer and distracting the children with a squeaky voice and a silly grin.
"Yeah, Dashie!" Pinkie Pie squeaked, her eyes on the foals but one ear flicked towards Rainbow Dash over on the loveseat. "Remember how long we had to wait for little Blue?"
"Yes." Rainbow Dash tried not to snap, her ears pinning back and fluffing her wings slightly. "And I hated every minute." She stomper her hoof and went back to her post, watching dutifully for any signs of Fluttershy and her child.
Rarity's horn glowed softly as a heavy crochet blanket floated around the anxious pegasus' shoulders, relaxing her forcibly. "Come here, darling." Her voice was soft and soothing as ever, Rainbow always liked how she sounded like bells and turned, slumping slightly in the seat as she made room. She became crushed against Applejack's large body as Rarity joined them, and the combined pressure began to work against her nerves.
"What if something goes wrong?" She mumbled, glancing over at Pinkie as she played with the foals.
"Fluttershy would find a way to let us know," Rarity kissed Dash's temple. "Her animals are watching over her, she's not alone."
...
"Hello, my little light." Fluttershy cooed, pressing her nose to the new born pegasus, cleaning away any residue. "Welcome to the world." The infant furled and unfurled his brown leathery wings, curled up on trembling gangly legs as he blinked.
With gentle encouragement from his large mother, Scattered Light managed to rise to his hooves and take his first shaking steps. He stumbled towards her, falling against her warm and soft body. She tucker her wing around him, praising him for his effort as she worked through his short fluffy mane.
When he was clean, she used her wing thumb to help lift her new child onto her back as she stood, keeping her wings held out to give him a steady surface to lie on as she made her way back to her cottage, to the waiting ponies ready to love the newest addition to their family.
Rainbow Dash wasn't the first to spot them moving up the hill, but she was the first to move, using her wings to boost her speed as she barrelled towards them.
"New baby!" Fluttershy yelled, bracing for impact and standing as tall as she could to warn her to slow down. With a skid, Rainbow Dash just barely managed to avoid hitting Fluttershy, straining her neck to check Fluttershy's face with caring panic.
"Are you alright? Are you okay?" Rainbow chattered, wings still flapping as she rose to eye level. All panic washed away as she spotted the curious and quiet foal on Fluttershy's back, replaced by nothing but awe and love. "Oh... He's perfect..."
She reached out, taking him into her forelegs and nuzzling into him. Scattered Light babbled with an almost laugh, and Rainbow Dash choked back a squeal. By this point the others had joined, and she lowered herself to the ground to better show the new addition to the waiting kids. Blueberry and Midsummer both looked with wide and curious eyes, and when Scatter spread his little wings they both broke out into wide grins.
"He's so big," Twilight commented as she provided a steady wing for Fluttershy to lean on. It had been a question how big he would be, considering Fluttershy was the tallest of them and Rainbow Dash was the smallest. It seemed Fluttershy's genes had won out in this battle.
---
Fluttershy took care of Scattered Light alone during her infancy, although she had plenty of regular visits, especially from Rainbow Dash and Applejack. When Scatter was old enough to start going to nursery, it was decided she would live with the other kids in Canterlot. It was during these younger years that Scattered Light expressed her desire to be a girl, a revelation that was met with nothing but love and support from her family.

Part 8 of A Treatise of Embroidery, crochet, and knitting with illustrations
By George C. Perkins, Anna Grayson Ford, and M. Heminway & Sons Silk co circa 1899
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please note, this book was written in 1899, and as such uses a racist term to refer to the dyes that were used for the thread. If you'd like to read more about this period in time, the term, and the stereotypes that the Victorians had, I've actually linked the wikipedia article here that goes more in depth. It's not the end all be all of it, but it's a good starting place for anyone wanting to educate themselves on the topic.
The alt text for the page on the left containing the actual embroidery pattern is written below:
Page 31. Lessons in Embroidery.
This is the chart for the embroider by letters/numbers diagram on this page.
La France Rose. (Pink.) Flower: 580 is shade number 1, 581 is 2, 0582 is 3, 582 is 4, 583 is 5, 584 is 6, 585 is 7, 586 is 8, 0432 is 9, and 432 is 10.
Leaves and stems.
Green:
570 is Shade letter A, 571 is B, 572 is C, 573 is D, 436 is E, 437 is H, 438 is I, 439 is K.
Old Red: 233 is M, and 234 is O.
Rose Design.
Materials. — M. Heminway & Sons' Oriental Dyes, Japan and Spanish Floss.
La France Rose. — 580 to 586, 0432, 432, a645, 0645. Leaves. — 570 to 573, or 0428 to 430, or 436 to 439 Japan Floss ; 233, 234 Japan Floss. Scallop. — 691 Spanish Floss ; also 370 Japan Floss.
Description. — Work the top petals of rose with 0582, 582, shading darker underneath where the leaf turns over with 584, 585. The turn-over leaves make of the lighter shades, 580, 581. A very little of green, 0432 and 432, can be used with effect in one of the lower petals, running the green into the light pink. Also in the fallen petals of rose use these greens with yellow, a645, 0645.
Leaves. — Shade the same as Design No. 138 on page 37, using the red-brown, 233 and 234, for thorns and stems.
Scallop. — Long and short buttonhole with 691 white Spanish Floss, shading with 370 Japan Floss.
In any La France design containing buds just bursting, use darkest shades of pink, 585, 586
There is an illustration of a doily captioned Design No. 239— Double Rose. 22 inch. It has three large roses and one small one paired with one of the larger ones flowing clockwise around the doily. there are also some petals shown scattered from one of the roses as well.
There is also a diagram for the rose captioned Spray of Design No. 239. Showing Slant of Stitches. The stitches curve in the direction of the leaves and petals. I will list off the shade letters/numbers as follows:
The stem begins in D with a thorn done in O emerging on the right, and another one a ways above it emerging on the left. A small sprig of three leaves emerge from the right.
Starting from the upmost leaf which is curled and emerges from the leftmost side of the sprig, we will go row by row.
1st Row, the furled underside of the leaf: A 2nd row onwards, the upper side of the leaf: C, B. 3rd Row: B, C. 4th Row: M, D.
Next leaf, Sprig tip leaf, rows from tip to base:
1st Row: C. 2nd Row: B, A, B. 3rd Row: B, A, A, C. 4th Row: M. 5th Row: C, D, D.
last leaf, bottom leaf but the rightmost leaf on the sprig.:
1st Row: D, A. 2nd Row: C, D, B. 3rd Row: B, B, B, A. 4th Row: A, A. 5th Row: M.
Back to the main stem, we go upwards and there is a thorn done in M just before another sprig emerges from the left. This one does not have any lettering so I would go by the previous pattern or improvise. It does show the lines of the stitches curving with the leaf.
The Stem continues in D with two more thorns on the right side done in M. The receptacle of the flower, aka the green part where the petals emerge from, starts in M and then transitions to C.
There are sepals, the tiny leaves around the flower base, with one on either side. The tips are twisted to reveal the underside and done in A, while the bases are done in B.
Onto the actual rose,
Right bottom outer petal which is opened and nearly totally sideways, done in rows working upward from the bottom to the top.
Row 1: 10, 4, 2, 2. Row 2: 9, 3, 5, 5, 3. Row 3: 5, and the curled over top part of the petal is 3.
Left Bottom outer petal:
Row 1: 2, 3, 7, 6. Row 2: 5. Row 3: 2, 4, 4, 7.
onto the next set of petals, there are three this time emerging from the bottom two:
Left outer Petal:
Row 1: 3, 7, 6. Row 2: 2, 5, 6. Row 3: 2, 4, 3. Row 4:3. Row 5: 3, 5. Row 6: 5. Row 7 has just a slight furl to it which is done in two.
Center Outer Petal:
Row 1: 3, 2, 3, 4. Row 2: 3, 4, 4, 3, 5, 6. Row 3: 5, 6. Row 4 is alternating furled and unfurled bits: 3 unfurled, 3 furled, 2 unfurled, furled and has no number but is likely 3.
Right Outer Petal:
Row 1: 7. Row 2: 5. Row 3: 4. Row 4: 3, 2. Row 5: 2.
Next row of petals, we'll be going right to left this time because the rightmost petal is actually sort of cutting in front of the previous petal and the center outer petal that we just did.
Right Center Petal, both sides furl and join at the center in a point, the left furl says 2, so I would guess the right one is also done in that as well even though it's not numbered.
Row 1: 6, 5, 7. Row 2: 5, 4. Row 3: 2.
Center Petal:
Row 1: 6, 7. Row 2: 5, 5, 4. Row 3 2 is a furled edge that goes diagonally upwards towards unfurled 3, 4, 3 is the unfurled tip of the petal, 2 furled rightmost bit diagonally upwards towards unfurled 3.
Left Center Petal. The edge of this one is completely furled and goes diagonally upwards to a point and comes down. It is done in shades 3 and 2. For the rest of the petal:
Row 1: 5, 6. Row 2: 3, 5. Row 3: 4. Row 4: 4. Row 5: 3.
Now there are three petals left to do and they emerge at a diagonal offset from the previous 3. With the next set, each petal is wider than the previous one, and the first petal is the small centermost petal of the rose while the next two are the outer petals, with the last one emerging from the center of the second to last petal and the corner of the Right Outer Petal we did earlier.
Center Petal: Row 1: 5. Row 2: 3, 4. Row 3 is furled but has no number, I'd go with either 2 or 3 judging from elsewhere in the diagram.
Center Outer Petal:
Row 1: 2, 2, 3.
Outermost petal:
Row 1: 4. Row 2: 3. There is some slight furling around the 3 which is unfurled, one of which is labelled 1. *******
The next few updates will be single page updates since the alt text is very long!

see the line where the sky meets the sea? it calls me.
[ AFSMC // day 8: COLOR PALETTE INSPO] [1/4]
Over on Instagram, Tina Say Knits is running A Fresh Start Making Challenge again, and I am... somewhat participating. Likely not going to post all my responses here on top of Instagram, but Tumblr likes moodboards, right? So anyways, the prompt for today was Color Palette Inspo and, me being me, I got very excited about making moodboards and ended up with 4. Here's the first, inspired by the blues of the sea and sky.

Making a baby blanket for a, uh, cousin-in-law? Is that a thing? Unfortunately, this project justified my buying random baby yarn on clearance because I just had this yarn in my stash.
The blanket is linen stitch with a clever three-ball system that meant I only had to weave in like six ends! It's just a single stitch border with the self-striping yarn and I'm working on a row of puff stitch with the purple to finish it off.

My contribution to FishTank Day 1 and the color palette challenge. I've gathered items I either bought because of the color or that were around my house in the green and yellow color scheme, and then I made a kind of Gavii-CottageCore-FishTank moodboard of sorts. :D Basically tea, and yarn, and plants. The dream truly.
From top to bottom, left to right:
Image 1: My dream FishTank yarn - Arcane Fibre Works in the colorway "Calm Waters" (fingering weight). Just a few more in stock, but there is a similar one here, with a more yellow focus.
Image 2: Chantal Tea Kettle in Marigold yellow and an artisan made tea cup with lemons. I do not have the maker for the cup written down anywhere, but if I find them I will edit this post. [EDIT: TMD ceramics]
Image 3: Hoya Pubicalyx in a pot with a yellow butterfly
Image 4: Customized YETI rambler with "TB-4" on the side
Image 5: Gordon and Virgil Minis propped up with some scrap crochet thread in green and yellow. Green is Hobbii Rainbow Thread in "Malachite" and the yellow is Aunt Lydia's size 10.
Image 6: Green Coffee mug of a person in a sunhat planting near a green house. Purchased at my local farm shop, but I found it here as well.
Image 7: Hoya Wayetii in an artisan made pot by Rain Ceramics
Image 8: Vinyl Records with yellow album covers - "Best of the Blues Brothers" and "Talking is Hard" by Walk The Moon
Image 9: More Arcane Fibre Works yarn, worsted weight "Leaf Green" and a Furls Crochet Streamline Resin hook in "Virgo"
This has been a great excuse to test out my new camera!

Yarny YouTube reccomendations
So I like watching yarncraft-y videos while I do my own yarny crafting (because if I watch them when I'm not crafting it'll just make me want to craft and procrastinate on work and that ain't good), and I kinda just wanted to give out some yarny channel reccomendations especially since some of these channels are on the smaller side and deserve more views
Now I want to give out a disclaimer that I really like watching videos about people making things, like, "I wanna make X item, come with me to make the thing and let's see what might go wrong". I'm not really into podcasts that much, nor am I into tutorials. There are great channels that do fantastic videos that fall into those two categories, but since they're not the kind of videos I personally enjoy watching, I'm not including them. These are my reccomendations based on my preferances, nothing objective etc
BTW I've linked the videos I'm reccomending on this video in the channel names so if you want to go watch the video immidiately, no need to go looking for them, already there
Michelle Jasek
Tumblr media
(Formerly known as Fancy Dinosaur Tea Party) Absolute Queen, has a funky vintage style that makes her crochet creations super interesting, and makes the exact type of videos I love. Her videos are the backbone of my crochet video needs.
She does also make thrifting and sewing videos and other content, and all of it is great, but man, those crochet videos just hit different
Kayla (Alt Knots)
Tumblr media
Kayla does a lot of haul-type videos, reviewing yarns and hooks and those are the videos I go to them for. They also do occassional DIY projects (with an alt twist for my fellow gothically inclined friends) and tutorials, just a lot of community content, like if you enjoy having crochet-alongs or watching movies or chatting streams or doing book clubs while crocheting, Kayla has you covered, they do a lot of content.
Also god damn I have never wanted an ergonomic crochet hook before but Kayla is going to singlehandedly convince to buy one from Furls sooner or later out of sheer FOMO
Retro Claude
Tumblr media
Around July of 2022, Claude uploaded this video of her sharing her yarn stash and what a Problem it had kind of become for her. In the video she goes deeper into the stash to figure out how much yarn she has and has since been uploading monthly videos in her Stash Busting series, where she tries to use up all the yarn she has.
Claude mainly does vintage knitting, some of her projects getting their own videos while others only get shown in the stash busting series. She also does (vintage) sewing and, what else can I say, her videos are great, go watch them
Shaiyeh - Witchy Knits Podcast
Tumblr media
Like I mentioned before, I'm not a podcast person really, but Shaiyeh's knits tend to have a very whimsical twist to them that appeal to my gothic ass so I can't help but to be drawn to her yarn-videos. They're very chill and cozy so I really want you go check her videos out, they're painfully underrated and she deserves way more views than she gets
Engineering Knits
Tumblr media
I'm not really a knitter but vintage knitting is just facinating and Engineering Knits does a lot of that, as well as other videos that're either knitting or vintage clothing related. Go check her out!
Wool Needles Hands
Tumblr media
Wool Needles Hands does mainly podcasts but between her podcasts she often does either pattern reccomendations (mainly for knitting) or some wonderful, extremely informative videos about yarn-related subjects, and it's those informative videos (like the one I've linked above) that I always find myself looking forward to
TL Yarn Crafts
Tumblr media
I'm sure you already know Tony, she is an Absolute Goddess and her tutorials are a godsend. But I'm not including her on this list because of her tutorials, no, she's on this list because I love watching her reviews, be it for yarn or gadgets, they're all great.
But also if you ever need any crochet tutorials, Tony has you covered, she is without a doubt the best crochet tutorial maker on YouTube and if you haven't watched her videos yet, you're missing out (which is why she's at the bottom of the list, because surely you already know her)

Learning 2 crochet, babey!
Tumblr media
My tension’s a bit weird because I’m still figuring out which way to hold the working yarn feels right for me, but I’m not going to sweat aesthetics too much. My output’s fairly consistent and I’m starting to understand the visuals of what successful rows look like, so that’s progress.
I’m also having a way better time than my first attempt years ago because my new hooks are actually comfortable. The Furls were expensive, but the comfort makes it worth the investment.

I want to get/make some ergonomic crochet hooks. I've mostly been using those cheap shitty metal ones since I bought them when I picked up crochet again but I think that's part of the problem. Furls are too expensive. While the resin hooks are pretty I don't think they are thick enough. I like how light the wood hooks are but I have a split in mine and it keeps snagging the yarn which is annoying. I keep thinking of buying a clover set or I've seen some other cute sets, but they are so expensive..... I've seen on TikTok people using a tennis ball which looks ugly but might be my best bet since the chunky boi(silicone cover) has dipped in quality with recent restocks and the one I have is stuck on one of my hooks. I could also make handles out of clay. Still if I made them as thick as I want I'd need a new place to put them.
