July 22nd is...
Creme Brulee Day -  Crème Brûlée has been with us quite a long time, appearing first in a recipe book by one Francois Massialot in 1691. Known as the Cuisinier royal et bourgeois it held the first recorded recipe for this incredible treat, though when it was translated to English it became known as “Burnt Cream”, which is perhaps not an altogether unjust description of this confection. Oddly, for all that is deeply associated with France, and specifically with Paris, from 1740 to 1980 it appeared in not one French cookbook. Considering that decades reputation for utter hedonism and decadence, Crème Brûlée came back onto the scene in a big way in the 1980’s, and became the “darling of the restaurant boom.”
Fragile X Awareness Day -  Fragile X syndrome is a mutation of the FMR1 gene and is the most common form of inherited intellectual disability. It impacts men more than women, and while a person may have the gene mutation, sometimes they do not have any apparent signs. Those who do show signs may have mild or severe symptoms. Physical, intellectual and behavioral symptoms may appear, and they vary between males and females. Women tend to have similar but milder symptoms or none at all.
Hammock Day - A hammock is a sling made of fabric, rope or netting. When suspended between two points, a hammock forms a sling used for swinging, sleeping or resting. We usually suspend a hammock between trees or posts.  The hammock dates back thousands of years to Central America where it protected people from creatures and dirt. However, the netted bed didn’t find Europe until explorers brought it back in the 17th century. Not long after, the hammock found its way onto naval ships, providing comfort and maximizing space.
Mango Day -  Originating in Bangladesh and parts of Myanmar and India, hundreds of varieties of mangoes grow around the world today.  Mangoes also pack in the nutrients. Did you know that one mango contains almost two and a half times more vitamin C than an orange? Mangoes are also high in vitamins A, B-6 and K, antioxidants, potassium and dietary fiber.
Penuche Fudge Day -  Penuche is pronounced pe-new-chee. The Italian form of the word is panucci. The fudge-like candy includes the following ingredients: brown sugar, butter, vanilla, and milk. Lighter in color than traditional fudge, penuche tastes like maple thanks to the brown sugar. If you are looking to celebrate, many shops in New England sell this fudge. There they will add pecans and other nuts, especially if making a candy form of penuche. Southerners call it brown sugar fudge candy.
Rat Catcher’s Day - Commemorates the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. According to the folktale, residents of the German town of Hamelin hired a strangely dressed man to rid their village of rats. The Pied Piper of Hamelin did so by playing his flute. Upon finishing the task, the townsfolk refused to pay — so the Pied Piper returned. Once again, the Pied Piper played his flute while the children followed him. And with the Pied Piper, the children vanished, never to return.  While a harrowing tale of revenge doesn’t seem like something to celebrate, someone found a way. Depending on where you live, the day includes festivals and re-enactments.
Refreshment Day - Celebrates fun at the hottest time of the year. The day toasts those moments of ice, cold refreshment, especially a nice cold beer. Whether you’re at the beach or wrapping up a long day of work, it’s nice to know there’s a glass waiting for you somewhere. The dog days of summer call for coolers full of ice. Long weekends and vacation days beckon, too.

New Me, Stateside for New Year’s | #20 | January 2020
When I landed back in Mongolia, many asked me either, “How was America?” or “How was China?” I saw both, anyway. So in this travel trio finale, I reflect on the changes I’d noticed in and around me during my three weeks on vacation from Mongolia.
During my reverse culture shock in the States, I logged my findings. Some were physical, like my increased tolerances (resilience?). Others were perceptions. Food, friends and family are my themes~
Landing in the States
“Welcome back, sir,” smiled the U.S. immigration officer at SFO, when said I’m a Peace Corps Volunteer.
That felt different.
Usually immigration gives me trouble, not credit.
But I also felt more comfortable on the plane and in the airport, too, not needing to worry whether my shoes’ bottoms faced others. When travelers’ feet rubbed mine, they didn’t need to shake my hand. Those made life easier. Nonetheless, I felt odd seeing Americans nonchalantly have their shoes’ bottoms face people.
The House in Vegas
Returning to my family’s house that December 19 before Christmas, it felt more spacious than I remembered. Even our restrooms just felt larger than I recalled. Having our cooling fall from our ceiling, instead of heating from radiators below the windows surprised me, too.
Writing of the house, I also sleep way better in the beds at home. Amusingly, I slept in my older brother’s old bed, since, for the past four plus years, he’s slept in my old bed. My younger brother had moved into his old bed while I was away for university. (It’s complicated.) Based on the States, I felt, I could think up ways to make my bed in Mongolia more comfortable…
As I explained to friends in the States, I’d also experienced dreams including friends from both in my Peace Corps service and in my Nevada lives before. I noted, in the past, I would keep in touch with American friends while going abroad. This time, I would keep in touch with Mongolian friends while visiting the States. Those blending communities felt profound, since I loved when life’s separate experiences crossed. I hope I continue such habits beyond my service.
Before my half-brother and his wife left after Christmas, they commended me, I seem more confident and calmer since graduating university. We discussed at length some cross-culture techniques, regarding how I seek and engage motivations when I teach and learn.
On the Advent of Christmas, I’d returned through my closet for childhood things I’ve finally grown willing to part with. I gifted these to them, for their baby. When I returned to Mongolia, they shared with me a photo of him adoring his new toy. Hehe, what a life.
So Much Food
To end my first full day back at the house, I stayed true to my word from Mongolia. I just went to the fridge and freezer, grabbed a bunch of berries and banana, plunked them in a blender with pineapple(?) ice cream and milk, (plus peas,) then downed that awesome shake while I worked on my writings. Ugh, shakes.
I definitely satisfied my major cravings stateside. While I love Mongolian food, I’d forgotten the States’ food diversity! I enjoyed at least American (including Hawaiian), Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and Thai goodness. Vegas has lots of Asian cuisine.
I hadn’t realized how much a half-Chinese American like me could miss pizza, burgers and bagels, but heck, I found that out, too. I ate pizza at plenty opportunities, amounting to at least a time or two per week. Freezer pizzas tasted rad. Even those staling discount blueberry bagels from Smith’s were great.
And, oh dang, microwaves! Not having to heat my food on a pan felt the best, haha. I’m such a tourist in our own house.
Into Our Community
Leading up to my return, I announced to friends I’d be back. Get-togethers arranged.
Sunday, we left home to see family friends. The constant Christmas music on the radio and Christmas lights on neighborhoods’ homes welcomed me. I even welcomed hearing car radios! I hadn’t heard as many radios in Mongolia, since I avoided taxis my first months. Buses just played downloaded music videos, if anything.
Outdoors in Vegas, I realized I could take the cool way better! I wore one or two layers when locals wear two or three.
At sushi, we enjoyed a welcome back lunch celebrating the returns of a family friend and me. I loved the fraternal bonds and companionship. Curiously, a family friend offered me a beer, which I finished myself. I felt surprised, considering I could hardly do that before leaving America. I guess Mongolian events like Teachers’ Day gave me practice. Later, at my high school Korean friend’s house, he offered me to try his favorite bourbons. Even those, I realized, tasted pretty good. Seems my drink palate’s changed. But I prefer not to invest that route.
Fireside Philosophies
That night with three from our high school alma mater, we lounged around a backyard fire pit with s’mores. Having had freshman classes with these guys, we’ve known each other almost a decade.
I felt particularly moved in an albeit geeky way, moments earlier, when we first reunited inside. He’s finishing his last semester at West Point. With a hand on my shoulder, he compared me to Ash Ketchum, traveling the world and making so many friends. “Someday, you’re going to be Hokage,” he smiled.
He’s fun. He reached out during my first autumn in Mongolia, after some four years apart.
Our party of four discussed our passions, dreams and goals. We’d all traveled afar for our studies and careers. We talked big ideas like cross-cultural evangelization, shared Asian and Christian philosophies and the flooring ethical codes and punishments of West Point. Turns out isolation isn’t just something Peace Corps Volunteers experience!
Vegas Since Christmas
Days later, after Christmas, I reunited with more friends.
First, I saw a game developer, who also graduated my high school, who saw me before I left for Peace Corps. Then I met up with my photographer Korean friend who married before I left for Peace Corps and has done well. He prefers non-K-Pop Korean music. He let me know our high school friend from freshman year who left to study in the Philippines just returned to America. We hadn’t seen him since 2012. I felt so excited, we drove to see him. What an experience. I picked up a huge Thai tea with boba and Hawaiian burger, too. Now that’s Vegas.
Then I met one of my best friends, a fellow world-traveled one, who’s also preparing his graduate application. We also met a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, who served in Bangladesh till civil unrest evacuated them. I’ll cover our coffee shop/bookstore conversations in an upcoming story. Another friend, too, a Catholic I met at university, wandered a mall with me before her own first study abroad. I felt so happy for her.
In there, I noticed what my older brother and his girlfriend meant, about Americans not walking up escalators (lifts), even wide ones. When I got back to Beijing, I saw people did as I remembered, standing on the right side to wait or stepping up the left to go quicker. I felt glad I wasn’t crazy. Though, it made me wish Americans didn’t desire such large personal spaces in public places… We must share.
Last Rides in Reno
Back to Reno! My final day there, morning after the wedding, I donned my Mongolian traditional shirt and reunited with my journalism school and the Honors Program at the University of Nevada, Reno. I reunited, too, that weekend with my fraternity brothers and friends. We talked big ideas, and I imparted notions sculpted by my months in Mongolia. Yet I felt so comfortable seated in the cars, taking walks and lounging between professors’ offices in the city I called home four years.
Many related my youngest sister’s been doing well in her sophomore year at my alma mater. Church-wise, she’s even going through the Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults and dating her sponsor, who was my Knights of Columbus successor. (There’s a great coincidence from RCIA 2016 I may touch on someday.) The morning choir loves Sister dearly, though, even as they’ve missed my days, months and years among them. They’re family. Curiously, I even heard my dad’s been attending morning Masses there when he takes jobs in Northern Nevada. I’m glad he hears our remarkable pastor.
My sister and I actually had a falling-out the day I left our college town last May. So I’d written and sent her a formal apology while flying through Kyrgyzstan to Mongolia. Though we made amends over the seven months, I’m glad she’s had the good year I’d hoped for. Though my legacy hasn’t left its halls, I’ve wanted for her her own story. Even our youngest brother means to attend the Honors Program, its new director told me. Ultimately, my sister and I said goodbyes first this time, for she had to leave before my last day in the States.
That noon, still December 31, I also got lunch with my World Youth Day 2019 family. So fitting to end the year where we started it—together. I related the feeling of living the faith in the First Evangelism. They spoke words with such Spirit, I felt touched. They’ve really had my back this year. They kept in touch regularly since I came to Mongolia. I’ve needed that.
I spent the rest of my day slipping around campus, musing down memory lane and delivering gifts of шагай \shagai\ ankle bones I’d also given many for Christmas. I loved sharing Mongolian culture through my gifts. Mongolians wishing me over Facebook, “Merry Christmas,” on New Year’s Day, reminded me, as a Catholic, Christmas and New Year’s really do overlap.
There are so many more in Reno-Sparks I wish I could have seen again.
Northern Nevada’s New Year’s Eve
As evening neared, Dad picked me up from the University to take me near Lake Tahoe, where we would share dinner with the Catholic Regent and her Mongolian daughter-in-law, who first readied me for Peace Corps mere weeks before I went. Dad’s so social. Maybe someday I could match his way with making himself comfortable in a room of unfamiliar peers. Discussions of mining in Nevada and the Gobi Desert set in stone for me how similar my undergrad and current communities feel sometimes. Seriously.
Dad drove me back into town so I could ring in the new year with my newlywed friends. We experienced a multi-faith night hosted in the Reno Buddhist Center. Since I couldn’t find them, I sat in back. I spotted the University photographer who took my portraits at my senior year’s beginning and end, for having done well with my University scholarships and later becoming Senior Scholar of my school. She smiled at me with that familiar twinkle in her eyes.
I enjoyed a joke our kindly cathedral rector made, that evening, about Catholics coming late and leaving early. I hadn’t heard humor like that in Mongolia. He smiled with such affection when he saw me. Later than evening, as the fireworks came up, I approached the front. A woman had me and a classical singing boy join her beating the Taiko drum! What a moment.
The newlyweds joined me afterward, joyful to have spotted me down there. They introduced me to a Native American, an imam and other religious leaders who attended the wedding. They complimented my cantoring. I felt shocked they remembered. Then we took a big photo. We shared the most loving hugs.
Then, the couple and I went outside. Like our times passed, we exchanged goodbyes before my next big trip around the world. Then I got back in the car with Dad. After returning to Mongolia, I’d place throughout my apartment faith filled keepsakes from that beautiful wedding.
The New Year
New Year’s Day, I rode with Dad to Fallon, from where we left to Vegas after rest and a continental breakfast. Seeing his suitcases and the coolers in the hotel room before we loaded the car, I recollected years of road trips with my father and family. I still felt surprised how selflessly he’d driven me around New Year’s Eve, when I wanted to get places. I’d miss these road trips with my dad.
As I stared out the window, seeing the faraway mountains and thinking of that Thanksgiving car ride in Mongolia, I felt grateful to still have Dad well and healthy, after Mom. He still listened to dad rock. I liked that. We’d be home soon.
Through car rides like these, I finished one more big thing in the States. Across my weeks, I blazed through “Pokémon Moon.” This achievement was colossal, since I played in Mandarin Chinese and only touched the game once or twice annually for the three years since my sophomore year at university.
But ultimately, I left it behind in the States. I’m in Mongolia, a world of adventure. That’s my 2020 theme: Exploration. A game would surely distract if I brought it.
Leaving America (Again)
The last friend I saw before leaving Vegas and the U.S. again was also my last friend I saw before leaving for Mongolia the first time.
She seriously helped me pack in May, when I was a mess. This time, we ate out at a restaurant chain I’d seen only during my years in Reno-Sparks. We spoke for hours. Our reunions since college often wind up as these late nights. Though we relate about the voids left since our parents passed, we’ve known each other so long before. I’ve loved we can talk without retelling backstory. She’s one of those friends who’s so real, she knows me better than I do sometimes!
Anyway, seems I grew another way since Mongolia. This time in Vegas, I finished my packing myself.
Before the crack of dawn, I hugged my other siblings bye, before Dad zoomed me across the city for my flight away. That shiny Raiders stadium will probably be done the next time I’m back.
Return to My City
I experienced an amazing time with relatives and friends back in China on my return trip from the States to Mongolia.
January 8, back in Mongolia, I took an overnight sleeper train for my first time alone. I felt darkness’ void in knowing no one. I felt the waves of the rocking train, its lurches and bumps as it shifted and wheels screeched. I felt pensive during the odd morning hours when my sore back woke me. I thought about my identity and new words said before I left. More on that soon.
Peace Corps Mongolia continues.

#722 Bairstow’s century and Woakes’s first 3 maiden overs help England to keep World cup SF hopes alive; Rohit and Shami shine for India and Plunkett-Archer for England; Pakistan beat Afghanistan in a thriller ; Australia humiliate NZ; Its Brazil vs Argentina and Peru vs Chile in Copa America SF and more..:-)
Pakistan had gained immense confidence after beating SA and NZ. They had to beat Afghanistan and Bangladesh and expect England to lose one of the 2 matches to seal their SF spot. Afghanistan chose to bat first. None of Afghanistan batsmen scored beyond 42. They couldn’t get any decent partnership. They still posted a competitive score of 227. Shaheen Afridi starred again with the ball as he grabbed 2nd 4 fer in as many matches. Fakhar Zaman was dismissed of 2nd ball. Imam and Babar then had 72 run stand before Nabi dismissed both in 2 overs. That changed the match. Pak 81-3 from 72-1. Hafeez and Haris then pushed past 100. It looked like they would take Pakistan to comfortable victory. Mujeeb-Rashid then dismissed Hafeez and Haris respectively. Pak 142-5. Sarfaraz ran himself out. Pakistan 156-6. Afghanistan were favorites to win from here. Pakistan needed a hero and they found one in Imad Wasim.  He played cautiously initially. He had 50 run stand with Shadab before later got runout. Pakistan needed 46 runs from last 5 overs. There was 4 overs of spin remaining but Afghan captain gave gulbadin the ball. Imad smashed 16 runs of him which changed the match. Rashid and Mujeeb kept Afghanistan in the game. They needed 16 of last 2 overs. Wahab hit a six of Rashid which closed the gap. Imad hit the winning boundary with 2 balls to spare. Heartbreak for Afghanistan and relief for Pakistan. They need to now pray that India beat England which would mean that win against Bangladesh could seal their SF spot. Pakistan is on a roll now. They are a team which plays on rhythm. They have got that now. Most players are in form.
Australia were confirmed of SF spot. They were one win away from almost sealing top 2 spot. Boult and Ferguson reduced Australia to 92-5. Their openers and Smith failed for a change. Khawaja and Carey then had 109 run stand which steadied Australian ship. Carey was dismissed for 71. Khawaja made 88 as Australia set NZ a score of 244 to win. Boult even grabbed a hat-rick in final over. Its been a rare world cup where we have observed 2 hat-tricks.  Though openers fell early, Williamson and Taylor had 55 run stand to rescue NZ. Once Starc dismissed Williamson, wheels of NZ came off. They were dismissed for 157 from 97-2. Starc grabbed his 2nd 5 fer of the world cup. Starc has 24 wickets now in this world cup. Next best is 17 by Ferguson. They have now lost 2 in a row. They have depended on Williamson in batting. Taylor, Guptill and Latham have been out of form. Their SF seem to be certain as they have superior run rate when compared to Pakistan. If England win both the matches, they would qualify. In that case, NZ could tie with Pakistan on points but since NZ have superior run rate, they might qualify.
India faced England in Edgbaston. England won the toss and chose to bat without hesitation. India brought in Pant for injured Shankar. England dropped Moeen and Vince. Roy and Plunkeet were picked. Roy and Bairstow though were lucky early on started hammering India all over the park. Bairstow had a couple of Chinese cuts missing the stumps. Roy was caught behind off Hardik but India didn’t review.  Both crossed fifties and score beyond 100 inside 15 overs. They hammered Chahla and Kuldeep to short boundary sixes. Against the run of play, Roy was dismissed by Kuldeep for 66. India 160-1 in 23rd over. Bairstow reached his maiden WC century post that. He was dismissed by Shami trying to accelerate. India 205-2 in 32nd over. Prior to that dismissal, India had a phase where just 25 runs came in 6 odd overs. India controlled phase between 25-40 as runs dried up. Morgan also was dismissed trying to accelerate. Root and Stokes had a 70 run stand before Shami dismissed Root for 44. England 277-4 in 45th over. England scored 60 of last 6 overs thanks to some late hitting by Stokes-Butler. Bumrah bowled brilliantly for 1-44. He just conceded 3 runs in last over. Shami had 1-25 after 7 overs ended up at 5-69 in 10. England had put a target of 338 to win, 1 less than what India had set England in 2011 world cup. Stokes scored 79 of 54 balls which gave impetus later in the innings. India needed a great start but got reverse of it. 3 of first 5 overs were maiden (all by Woakes). ROhit was dropped on 4 by Root off Archer. Woakes dismissed Rahul for duck. Kohli and Rohit played very cautiously for first 15 overs. England bowlers were bowling loads of cutters and slow balls which was smart thinking. India had to get a move on. Kohli started by creaming few runs. He reached fifty, his 5th consecutive. Rohit also brought up his fifty. They took past 100 in 22 overs. Runs started to come a bit freely. Against the run of play, Virat was dismissed by Plunkett for 66. Pant took time to get going. He milked singles initially. He and Rohit had 52 run stand before Woakes dismissed dangerous Rohit for 103. India were always chasing 8+ required run rate due to slow start. Pandya joined Pant. They started hammering a few lusty blows. They had 28 run stand in 3 overs before Pant was dismissed by a stunning catch from Woakes. He dived full length to dismiss Pant. India 226-4 in 39 overs. India needed Hardik to fire. Dhoni joined him. He started quickly unlike previous games. India needed 104 runs of last 10 overs. Pandya was dismissed for a well made 45 of 33 balls by Plunkett. It came down to 71 from last 5 overs. Plunkett, Woakes and Archer bowled brilliantly in this phase of 40-45 overs.  Plunkett ended with 3-55. He was prime reason for England to pull back India. Dhoni and Kedar Just couldn’t maneuver the ball. India lost by 31 runs. Dhoni and Jadhav didn’t show any intent in last 5 overs. It looked like they were playing for averages rather than getting close to target.
In Copa America, Argentina started off poorly as Columbia hammered them 2-0 in opening game. They just managed draw against Paraguay. They outclassed Qatar to qualify for QF where they handsomely beat Venezuela 2-0. Martinez and Giovani have been goal scorers. They would clash with Brazil now in SF which could be mother of all clashes. Brazil have been unbeaten so far. They won QF on penalties 4-3 against Paraguay. They had last 2 Copa America cups in QF in penalties. Defending champions Chile beat Columbia in penalties as well. They would face Peru in Sf who beat Uruguay 5-4 in penalties. Suarez missed penalty.

The Tradition of Father's Day
The Tradition of Father’s Day is the topic for today. It’s two weeks away for those of us here in the US.
But first, let me take a minute to say welcome to every new listener and welcome back to the veteran homestead-loving regulars who stop by to listen to the FarmCast every week. I appreciate you all so much. I’m so excited to share with you what’s going on at the farm this week. And a fantastic recipe for grilling on Father’s Day.

Homestead Life Updates
Our homestead life is humming along. Yes, I’m still way behind on taming the weeds in the garden, the beans still need to be planted. And to top it off, harvesting is beginning. I’ve already picked green peas for shelling and snow peas. I froze four packages and had plenty left over for several meals. Now the shelling peas need to be picked again. This time there will be lots and lots and lots of them. I may freeze some and can some. We’ll see. Freezer space is at a premium right now. The potatoes are ready to be dug up and dried and I have plenty of spring onions available to add fresh to any dish.
Happy and good lamb news. We had a late arrival a few days ago. That brings our total to 10 lambs this year and zero loses. We’ve never had that kind of success rate. Mother nature usually has her way with at least one or two. We have been truly blessed this year.
The herd shares are going gangbusters. Only a couple of slots left there. And so many are interested in the cheese. During the summer we offer milk, yogurt, butter and cream, while winter will provide lots of cheese and butter. My schedule may change in that area due to the requests of the herd share owners. Many want the cheese now in lieu of the milk. Next month their wishes will become reality.
The quail are growing like crazy. Scott devised a way to alter their feeding trays so they don’t waste so much. That’s working out fine. The roosters are beginning to crow. It’s not a like a chicken at all. When I go and visit them and care for them, they are all standing in a row in front of the door looking out. They are so cute and funny.
Scott is moving along with the creamery walls. And that’s about it for the homestead updates. Let’s get to the topic of the day.
The Tradition of Father’s Day
Last month we looked at the tradition of Mother’s Day. Today we look at the tradition of Father’s Day. And more importantly, why children need fathers (or at the very least father-figures) in their lives. Today retailers and marketers, in an effort to make a quick buck, have completely changed the original meaning of Father’s Day. A holiday that was created to honor dad and enumerate his special qualities is now used as a marketing tool. Such is the way of life in our very affluent country.
Let’s take a look at the roots and history of Father’s Day.
The Religious Roots and Tradition
A customary day for the celebration of fatherhood in Catholic Europe is known to date back to at least the Middle Ages, and it is observed on March 19, as the feast day of Saint Joseph, who is referred to as the fatherly Nutritor Domini ("Nourisher of the Lord") in Catholicism and "the putative father of Jesus" in southern European traditions. This celebration was brought to the Americas by the Spanish and Portuguese, and in many countries Father's Day is still celebrated on March 19. The Catholic Church actively supported the custom of a celebration of fatherhood on St. Joseph's day from either the last years of the 14th century or from the early 15th century.
The History of Father’s Day in the United States
Father's Day was not celebrated in the US, outside Catholic traditions, until the 20th century. As a civic celebration in the US, it was inaugurated in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day by celebrating fathers and male parenting.
There are two stories of when the first Father’s Day was celebrated in the United States. According to some accounts, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, 1910. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise (Likely she would be displeased that Mother’s Day still gets the lion’s share of attention).
Sonora’s dad was quite a man. William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the six children by himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her appreciation for all the hard work and love William gave to her and her siblings, Sonora thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him. She initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father’s death to be the designated day to celebrate Father’s Day, but due to some bad planning, the celebration in Spokane, Washington was deferred to the third Sunday in June.
The other story of the first Father’s Day in America happened all the way on the other side of the country in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men.
While Father’s Day was celebrated locally in several communities across the country, unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday began almost immediately. William Jennings Bryant was one of its staunchest proponents. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. But no official action was taken.
In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father’s Day. However, it wasn’t until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father’s Day was officially recognized as a national holiday.
It took a while, but we got there. Fathers are celebrated in our country every year on the 3rd Sunday in June.
Father’s Day Around the World
Other countries also picked up on the idea of Father’s Day. It is, after all, quite profitable. While many followed suit by celebrating it on the third Sunday in June, some decided to honor dad on different dates. So, to make sure you know when to pay your respects to dear old dad wherever you may be, here’s a list of the two most prominent dates and associated countries where Father’s Day is celebrated around the world.
March 19– The religious celebration, is observed in Angola, Belgium, Bolivia, Croatia, Honduras, Italy, Lichtenstein, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland.
Third Sunday in June– The US version, is also observed in Antigua, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Trinidad, Turkey, United Kingdom, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.
A few made the list twice. Once for the religious celebration and the second for the secular celebration.
Why Fathers are Important in a Child’s Life
This is a topic I’m very interested in these days. In a time where men are often demonized at every turn for the smallest infraction, I feel the need to reiterate the facts and truth of the importance of men and father’s in the family. It is my opinion that way too many children are born today without a father’s loving presence. It has become common place for modern feminists to think they can “do it all” and they don’t need a man. It may be the biggest lie being perpetrated out there. I’ve spoken of this before and likely will again. It is detrimental to the health of women, their children and their relationships with the loving fathers of their children.
It’s simply ridiculous to think that the full-time job of parenting and a full-time job providing financial income can be done at the same time. There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to do both simultaneously and do them well. The reason there was a separation of a wife and husband’s duties was not to somehow suppress the intelligence and creativity of women. Nope. It was simply the best arrangement for the best outcome of family cohesion and stability. There was never anything stopping women from having careers. In fact, many did have careers. It was a choice then and is still a choice now to be a wife and mother. And in today’s environment, having a career is still quite feasible after the little ones reach their teens and begin experimenting with adulthood. Moms will sometimes have lots more time to pursue whatever they desire.
The children are raised by someone else and jobs often become drudgery for working mothers today. According to an article a few years ago in the Huffington Post, woman are unhappier today than ever before. It’s no wonder. We have to make choices. No one can “do it all”. We all make choices. And sometimes the choice is simply a matter of timing. Kids now, career later. Do it all in a linear fashion as opposed to lumping it all into a limited 24-hour day.
The traditional family evolved over time and has sustained itself over time because it works. It works to ensure that society moves forward in an orderly fashion. Sure, there are all kinds of fancy family configurations in our world today and all have value. All families have value. Having said that, it does not change the scientifically proven fact that children do best in a stable household with both a father and a mother. The special family configurations seem to be getting all the attention these days, which is great. I’m just bringing a bit of attention back to our traditional family structure. It’s what this podcast is all about.
It is my opinion that the traditional family structure is being neglected and pushed aside. There are many reasons, but my current pet peeve is for the welfare state that encourages single motherhood and discourages fathers from being part of their children’s lives. Money and other resources are severely cut back if a man is present in the household. As I said, it encourages single motherhood. This makes the life of mother and children much more difficult than it would be with a man in the picture. But for many growing up in the second and third generation of welfare, they know no other life. They know no other way to survive. My heart goes out to them.
Anyone can father a child, but being a dad takes a lifetime. Fathers play a role in every child’s life that cannot be filled by others or state provided financial benefits. The role of the father can have a large impact on a child and help shape him or her into the person they become.
Fathers and Emotional Development
Fathers, just like mothers, are integral in the development of a child’s emotional well-being. Traditionally, children look to their fathers to lay down the rules and enforce them. They also look to their fathers to provide a feeling of physical and emotional security. Children naturally want to make their fathers proud. An involved father can promote inner strength and personal growth. Studies have shown that when fathers are affectionate and supportive, it greatly affects a child’s cognitive and social development. It also instills an overall sense of well-being and self-confidence. Fathers are important to your children’s emotional development.
Fathers Set the Bar for Relationships with Others
Fathers not only influence who we are inside, but how we have relationships with people as we grow. The way a father treats his child will influence what that child looks for in other people. Friends, lovers, and spouses will all be chosen based on how he or she perceived the meaning of the relationship with his or her father. The patterns a father sets in the relationships with his children will dictate how they relate to and interact with other people.
Fathers and Their Daughters
Young girls depend on their fathers for security and emotional support. A father shows his daughter what a good relationship with a man is like. If a father is loving and gentle, his daughter will look for those qualities in men when she’s old enough to begin dating. If a father is strong and valiant, she will relate closely to men of the same character.
Fathers and Their Sons
Unlike girls, who model their relationships with others based on their father’s character, boys will model themselves after their father’s character. Boys will seek approval from their fathers from a very young age. As human beings, we grow up and mature by imitating the behavior of those around us; that’s how we learn to function in the world. If a father is caring and treats people with respect, the young boy will grow up much the same. When a father is absent, young boys look to other male figures to set the “rules” for how to behave and survive in the world.
Enter social media and online father-figure personalities. Enter the gangs. Enter the unsavory characters that can lead naïve youngsters astray. Again, mothers need to be at home with their children and they need to have stable relationships with the father of their children. A two-parent household consisting of a man and a woman is the ideal situation. Fathers are just as important as mothers. The online community is filled with great people that can be role models. But why have a substitute? Why not continue the tradition that has worked for as long as there have been humans? Have we thought deeply about what we are leaving behind?
That online community is also filled with evil people who wish to do harm to others – often targeting children and young adults. The primary job of a parent, I would argue, is to protect our children – to keep them safe from harm. We need to be there for them. Fathers need to be there for them.
As you celebrate your father on the third Sunday of June, ask him to show you how to grill a delicious, grass-fed burger. Tell him you love him and how much you appreciate him.
Gourmet Grilled Chevon Burgers
This recipe calls for ground goat. It's a great alternative to the same old hamburger. Goat, or chevon as it is widely known, is a staple red meat for much of the world outside the US. However, you can use whatever ground meat you prefer. The instructions call for using a cast iron skillet with lots of butter or oil. However, the grill works just as well.
What you Need
1-pound goat burger, grass-fed is preferable
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon sea salt (or to taste)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
1 teaspoon rosemary leaves, dried
1 teaspoon thyme leaves, dried
1 teaspoon cilantro, dried
1 teaspoon cumin, ground
1 medium onion, chopped
6 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter, divided
Instructions
Place the goat-burger in a mixing bowl, add Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme, cilantro, and cumin. Mix well.
In a medium skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil over medium to high heat. Add the onion, lower the heat, and sauté for about 2 minutes until nicely browned and caramelized.
Add onions to burger mixture. Mix well. Shape into 4 patties.  In a cast iron skillet heat the remaining olive oil or butter over medium-to-high heat.
Cook the patties in oil or butter until medium to medium-well, about 8 - 10 minutes on each side.
Notes
NOTE 1: Don't skimp on the oil when using goat. Grass-fed chevon burger is very lean and needs the fat to help retain moisture and to prevent sticking.
NOTE 2: As an alternative, you can use your gas grill.
Final Thoughts
That’s it for today’s Peaceful Heart FarmCast. If you are keeping up with the activities on the homestead, let me know what questions you have about what we do and why.
As you move closer to the celebration of Father’s Day in a couple of weeks, why not contemplate why this structural tradition has been in place for as long as it has? And there is nothing better than smiling across the table at your dad while chomping on a delicious gourmet, grilled, grass-fed burger with all the trimmings.

My Trip To LA's K-Town Night Market 2018
Tumblr media
Last month, LA's own Koreatown held its annual K-town Night Market, an open market/block party! At the event, you'll find tons of street food and clothing (like KORE Limited), as well as music and entertainment acts. People come from all over Los Angeles to relax and have a good time. I'll be talking about a little bit of both aspects of the Night Market and sharing my thoughts!
THE MARKET
Clothing stands sell some of the latest Korean fashion if you want to update your wardrobe. The food stalls have crowds surrounding them. This year, there was a Vietnamese food stall hilariously named Pho King Awesome. Melomelo sold coconut drinks in actual coconuts; they were very sweet and perfect underneath the California sunset. One stall sold fantastic jalapeno-topped, cheese-covered Saigon fries. Other stalls sold yakisoba, ramen burgers, ice cream, big things of lemonade, and food that I couldn’t even begin to describe other than delicious. The indescribable food looked like something an alchemist conjured up. Imagine an alchemist fusing a cake with a grilled cheese sandwich, and yet it tastes amazing. If there was ever a place to completely ruin your diet and undo all the work you did at the gym in three hours, it’s the K-town Night Market. I’ll post some pictures of the food below. I can’t really do the chefs the service they deserve. Nothing I say could replicate the feeling of seeing delicious food soaked in fat and salt and having your mouth flowing with saliva.
THE MUSIC
Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay for that long on Friday. I got off work at four, and thanks to traffic, it took me an hour and a half to get to the Night Market. I stayed for about 3 hours. I had to dip early because the parking structure I went to closed at 9:30- the same time the final performance went on stage. So unfortunately, I couldn’t catch the final performance of the night. I managed to catch the last half of local singer-songwriter Romeo. He has a great voice and was a talented R&B singer. I got to see a great performance by Nuna Gang, a self-called Hallyu Supergroup. They’re an LA based girl group inspired by K-pop. They are Jenny (African-American K-pop duo CoCo Avenue), Ashley (Joombas Music), Sierra, and Nami. Nuna Gang are all really cute girls and very charismatic on stage. It was a delight to see them in action. Despite a few technical difficulties at the beginning, the girls kept their heads high and continued on with a great show. Soon after, my favorite act of the night, THAGODSQUAD, performed. THAGODSQUAD is a rap duo made up of xKaita and T-Time. The duo uses anime sound bites as samples, which I love. For example, one song has the duo rap about the high life and achieving dreams, but the beat is inspired by "Shiki no Uta" sample, the ending theme to Samurai Champloo. I remember one bar referencing Gurren Lagann, namely the famous quote “Row, Row, Fight tha Powa!”  Another song had a "Cowboy Bebop" sample. THAGODSQUAD were the highlight of the Friday show for me and really made the hour-and-a-half trip worth it. As stated, I had to leave early and didn't get to see the GWNI, the final act of the night. I watched a few videos of GMNI’s performance when I got home. GMNI is a trap rapper, and he brought the heat. He ended the show with a ton of energy and everybody was hyped up. It was a great way to end the night. I came back the following day and made just in time to catch the tail end of the Ellen Min and Brian Li performance. Ellen and Brian are a YouTube couple who make vlogs. They have a nice amount of followers at over 200k subscribers. The couple performed by dancing to notable Kpop artists such as BTS, NCT, and the like. The two have a wonderful chemistry together, and you could tell they worked incredibly hard at perfecting their performance. After them was multi-instrumentalist and rapper, the young Abigail Pak. I love seeing young talent push themselves out of their comfort zone, so they can become better musicians. I think everybody can learn a thing or two from Abigail. The K-Town Night Market continued into the cloudy evening. Jasmine Clarke made a return to the K-town Night Market. She was there the year before. Jasmine Clarke has a sweet and demure voice, a big plus. Late of Odd Folks came on stage post Jasmine Clarke, and he is a strange artist conceptually. Odd Folks is meant to be an American boy band fusing together underground and Kpop music, but it’s just one guy, Late. Late himself is a chill rapper. He doesn’t rely on hard-hitting beats to make his mark but uses a nice easy-going flow. He goes for the more romantic, R&B style of rapping crooning in his songs. Think of artists like Verbal Jint, Jay Park, and Zion T. Late fit well with Jasmine Clarke’s demure performance, but what set him apart was his charisma. To wake up the crowd, Demi and the Destroyers came out, and they were as adorable as they were fierce. Demi is a beast and ramped up the crowd in a big way. The Destroyers are Demi’s back-up dancers, and Demi owned the stage with a powerful singing voice and dance performance. I’m surprised at Demi’s stamina. I got tired just looking at her. They owned the stage. It was a fantastic show. Choreography was on point. You didn’t know which way to turn your head and couldn't decide to look at Demi or the dancers.
Tumblr media
The main events came out at 9:15. Ted Park had a crazy performance! He came out on stage with hot pink hair and matching hoodie. The performance was crazy. The bass was heavy, the beat hard. Ted Park is a hero behind the mic; you couldn’t keep your eyes off him. He takes cues from trap rap— his flow is tight, his delivery fierce. He’s funny as well, a real natural behind the mic. He knows when to joke around and knows when to pump up the crowd. The crowd got riled up: jumping and beating the ground flat. Guest rappers came on stage, and brought it as hard as he did. The stage was shaking from the people on stage. After Ted Park got the crowed tired, Kisum came in, decked in white, and closed out the Night Market. Kisum is a Korean rapper, coming from all the way from South Korea, and she delivered a great performance. Like Late from Off Folks and other Korean rappers, her rap is chill and melodic with a bit of an edge. Her flow is smooth as milk. There were hints of Kpop within her music via pop-inspired beats. Kisum is a great entertainer, she knows how to work the crowd. In fact, many mainstream Kpop fans who are not as familiar with Korean hip-hop will also recognize her name. Not only did she gain fame on the show "Unpretty Rapstar," she has also collaborated with people like SISTAR's Hyolyn and MAMAMOO's Hwasa. Kisum also brought a surprise guest: rapper Heize! Heize had her single "Star" reached Number One on all Korean music charts upon its release and has been a guest at KCON LA and KCON NY, the largest Korean convention and concert in the USA. As such, I didn’t expect a notable name like Heize would come to a small Korean cultural festival like the night market, but their duet was beautiful. It was a nice way to close out the night and a great surprse for all those in attendance.
THE BOTTOM LINE
I love going to the K-Town Night Market. I love the sense of community permeating throughout the festival. There was a booth urging people to vote to keep Koreatown as it is since the City of Los Angeles wants to split Koreatown in half— one side staying as Koreatown and the other half becoming Little Bangladesh. As of this writing, I don’t know what the people voted for. Each year, the food trucks offer a great variety of food from your standard pizza and tacos to fried Japanese food and Korean fusion foods. The food stands in the middle of the festival were fantastic and offer the best comfort food from Koreatown. My main interest each year are the musical acts. Even though I only caught a small glance of the Friday show, I still enjoyed what I saw. I recommend people go and check out the show, even for a little bit for a relaxing date or just to wander around for a bit, munching on a stack of fried potatoes. The real party is always on Saturday. The big names come out and play for the crowd. I also love how the Night Market showcases relatively unknown acts to a new audience as well. It’s a great way to spend a chill weekend, and a great way to ring in summer. Check out a few of my pictures below! Did you go to K-Town Night Market 2018? What was your favorite part? KyeongJun is a writer for WTK, where he gushes about his love for Korean rock music (You guys need to listen to Jaurim). When not writing, he's listening to the newest K-Rock bands. You can also catch him on WTK Radio where he hosts a show every Thursday night at 10 p.m. EST. Media: As Credited Read the full article

Have A Hangover? Maybe You Should Try Some Of These Quick Fixes From Other Countries.

Have A Hangover? Maybe You Should Try Some Of These Quick Fixes From Other Countries.
Hangovers are one of the worst experiences in the world, but it’s how we know we’re human. Just saying the word “hangover” out loud gives me a headache.
There’s only one go-to hangover cure most Americans use: a combination of time and aspirin. Other cultures around the world, however, use completely different and fairly unique methods. Here are 10 odd yet effective hangover cures from around the world. I’m tempted to try #5.
1.) Namibia.
Darren Glanville
In the South African country of Namibia, the locals have what they consider to be a foolproof cure for hangovers. They call it Buffalo Milk.
Buffalo Milk is a combination of the following hangover fighting substances: clotted cream, dark rum, spiced rum, cream liqueur, and whole cream. I’d imagine this would be pretty nauseating after a long night of drinking for most folks. I suppose another foolproof way of fighting a hangover is to just get drunk again.
2.) Peru.
Luis Tamayo
Peruvians know how to party, and in turn know how to fight back against the wrath of the hangover. For the morning after, they eat a special kind of fish soup that comes complete with lime juice, lemon juice, garlic, and ginger.
That actually sounds delicious, and there’s no alcohol in it.
3.) The Wild West.
Ebaum’s World
Back in the days of the wild American west cowboys didn’t have access to a wide selection of sophisticated hangover cures. So what did they do after a night of too much whisky? They drank pellet tea.
Pellet tea, of course, was made by steeping rabbit droppings in hot water. Yuck.
4.) Australia.
Gordon Wrigley
The Aussies love their Vegemite, so it’s no surprise that Vegemite is their choice of hangover cure. In case you’re not familiar with Vegemite, it’s a food spread made from left over brewer’s yeast extract with various spices. It looks like Nutella, but believe me, it doesn’t taste like it.
5.) Canada.
blue.tofu
When Canadians have too much to drink, they eat a healthy helping of poutine the day after. Poutine may be the single most delicious thing in Canada regardless of your physical state. It’s a platter of french fries smother in cheese curds and gravy. Yummy, sign me up.
6.) Bangladesh.
JustyCinMD
The locals in Bangladesh recommend drinking coconut water if you’re having a rough time after swigging from the bottle until sunrise. It’s supposedly full of potassium and many other essential nutrients that help fight a hangover.
7.) Hungary.
Rodney Campbell
Hungarians never do things by half measure. When you have a hangover in their country, their solution is drinking sparrow droppings in brandy. Pretty gross.
8.) Puerto Rico.
John Robinson
Puerto Ricans allegedly discovered a way to prevent hangovers all together. All you need to do before a night out is rub a slice of lemon or lime into the armpit of your drinking arm, and voilà! No hangover the next day.
I should note that there’s no actual science behind this, but I guess it’s worth a try, right?
9.) Haiti.
Steve Snodgrass
Haiti doesn’t mess around with hangovers. You can get voodoo to take of your hangover for you. All you need to do is stick 13 black-headed pins into the cork of the bottle that caused your hangover. Then it magically disappears. Sounds simple enough.
10.) Ireland.
Alex Ranaldi
According Irish tradition, the best way to kick that killer hangover is to bury yourself up to your neck in wet river sand. Of course there’s no science to back this one up either, but it would be sort of equal to having a super cold shower. Sometimes that works.
(Via: Ebaum’s World)
Some of these cures sound worse than the actual hangover itself. The only one I do want to try is the Canadian method. Poutine after a tough, all-night party sounds magical.
