I wonder if staff and advertisers know that having ads auto play audio is literally the least effective way to advertise on an app/site that's not already video-based. Like I feel like it's fairly universal that people don't like suddenly being bombarded with sound when they are expecting a mostly soundless experience. Nobody has ever liked random shit they didn't ask to hear automatically playing with no warning.

Like. I know it's a given to be like "if you annoy me with ads I will actively not want to buy your shit" and that brands ignore that for whatever reason. But this goes beyond normal annoyance. With regular ads, silent ads, that ad might take up space on my screen and I might subconsciously take it in while I'm looking at a post above/below it or whatever. I might at least notice the brand.

But with the autoplay ads, I genuinely don't even know what brand it's for. Because the noise starts playing before I've even registered that part of the ad is on my screen. And I immediately scroll away as fast as possible to get the sound to stop. They're not even getting any passive brand recognition or whatever that they'd get from the normal ads that people tend to just ignore.

I mean I suppose I can understand tumblr's angle with allowing them; the more annoying the ads, the more likely you are to pay to go ad-free. In theory. I'm sure in reality people will either put up with hearing the first few milliseconds of an ad and scroll past as fast as they can, or they'll just use the app less. And maybe some people will pay to go ad free but surely not as many as will just stop engaging with the app.

This is a widely shared opinion amongst males for sure, but you just know that these same guys will be relentlessly pursuing the very women they despise and crying about not having a gf, making plebbit posts asking each other for advice on the 'grind' and how to pull several women at once. Wish they'd stand by their so-called ideals of hatred and leave us the fuck alone.

I think the frustrating thing about Spotify recommendations is sometimes it really does introduce me to lots of cool Indie Bands that I really vibe with and allow me to try some new stuff and sometimes it keeps telling me that I need to Listen to Mother Mother (I have not listened to Mother Mother ever and at this point I never will because it is a pride thing.)

Or a random unfunny tiktok joke song from 3 years ago/ a viral YouTube song from over a decade ago.
