I was in French class last week and had to say who my favorite French artist was in French.

My dumb ass, not knowing ANY of the lyrics by said artist in the English said “Mon artiste musicale française préférée est La Femme”, which is accurately translated (I think? I mean I wasn’t corrected 🤷‍♂️), and when asked for a song to play in class I said Tatiana. Now, keep in mind. I know NONE of these lyrics in English. I panicked, and it was the first one I could think of.

Imagine the sheer and utter EMBARRASSMENT I felt when my French teacher puts it on, then immediately pauses it and looks at me like this:

Fast forward to after class my teacher steps outside with me and very kindly explains what the song is actually about. Turns out it’s about feeling up a girl’s tits in a New York night club.

Moral of the story, never and I mean NEVER talk about an artist AT SCHOOL if you have NO CLUE WHAT THE LYRICS MEAN. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT. IT IS NOT WORTH IT.

So. Last year, I took the French 3 class my school offers. I really struggled in that class. I got an A because I did the work and turned in assignments but I still fell behind. I wasn't fully grasping the concepts and speaking to my classmates in French was a struggle because nothing we learned was making sense. It just didn't click and I got really discouraged toward the end of the year.

This year, I'm taking the French 4 class. Not only am I worried that I won't succeed/fall even more behind, my school also got a new French teacher and while she's nice, what I've seen of her teaching style scares me because it reminds me of my old Spanish teacher (there were many issues in that class; no I will not be explaining).

I had already thought about repeating French 3 this year but I couldn't fit it into my schedule. Now, I'm considering dropping it. Everyone's been telling me to give the teacher a chance, but it's barely about her. Yes, the teacher does play a part in my decision, but it's mostly the fact that I was not successful in French 3. If I did drop the class, I'd continue to learn French on my own with something like Babble.

I did!!! I grew up bilingual so im equally fluent in both English & Arabic :) I did have a brief rut w Arabic tho where I was taking forever to finish sentences/I switched way too much to English even around my Arab family, but that all got rectified when I visited Iraq last summer and was forced to speak Arabic 24/7 lol. But I was never nooooot fluent, just a lil slow sometimes if anything

Yes...and No 😅 It's not that we don't respect it, it's more that spoken and written French are two different languages that respond to different rules (think written vs spoken Arabic, but less extreme)

To really speak conversational French, you really shouldn't un-learn the grammar and written rules, you just need to understand the spoken rules, which are all underlined by The Big French Principle: we're lazy fucks and will do ANYTHING to get that sentence finished asap 🙌
