Sanders Sides

Haven Forest AU

Summary: The sides accidentally find the rift between dimensions that's been causing a local forest to gain it's own campfire stories. They come to find the local legends of giants and otherworldly creatures may be true after all.

Location: Northern east coast, middle of nowhere small town called Haven.

The sides are all roommates and adults, each have a steady job. But their jobs aren't... them. Patton's an accountant, Roman's a bank teller, Logan's a insurance salesman, and Virgil manages a small chain of Chili's in the city.

Obviously these aren't jobs fitting they're personalities, and they're all going crazy with the mundanity. They each want to find adventure, and they can tell in their souls there's something greater. Something amazing out there that they just had to find.

In a last ditch suggestion Patton suggests that they go out deep in a forest. There were stories of this forest. The type of ghost tales highschoolers tell each other to haze freshmen; stories jocks tell of how they survived harrowing encounters; the stuff bar patrons told over a pint glass.

Of course, these are just stories. But nevertheless there's something that pushes each side to agree to go camping.

For Patton it was bonding between friends.

For Logan it was a chance to see local wildlife.

Of course for Roman it was the promise of adventure.

And for Virgil- honestly he just wanted to have an excuse to not see his coworkers.

Roman and Virgil snark at each other and manage to make bets that none of them had the balls to go so deep in the woods. So, lightheartedly they manage to pressure the group into going off the set path and just walking where their feet take them.

At first the transition to the ethereal was subtle. A snapdragon that glowed growing by moss unnoticed; melodic birdsong that tangled itself into the wind; a stag with golden antlers grazing in a distant clearing.

Before they know it they're more off the beaten trail then anyone's gone before. Distracted by banter, the change in their surroundings goes unnoticed at first.

The ferns grow wilder, the flowers spark with colors not native to Earth as they know it. Willows and great oaks stretch to the sky. Their branches allow a glittering mirage of light to filter through, casting the whole forest in a fairytale-esque haze. Things seemed to get otherworldly in appearance and size. A person sized fern, sunflowers that climbed towering birches with their stocky vines, gem hue mushrooms the size of your head.

The best friends joke and run about, singing and dancing like fools as they found their own path through this untouched forest. Patton distractedly weaves flower crowns as he walks, listening to the animated debate on who's the best Disney sidekick. Logan scales a fallen oak to dramatically profess his undying devotion to Wall-E.

It's Logan who starts having the first feelings of somethings not quite right. The feeling was there and grew like an unruly weed. It started with a glimpse of something in the trees. He chose to write it off, surely what he saw was logically impossible. He instead chose to smile and lean into Patton as he was hugged from behind. If anything was wrong it could very well wait until this perfect day had its turn.

They were truly lost to time in their fun, and it was going to take a lot to get them to dampen their moods.

The last straw seemed to be the humming that reverberated like a jetplane.

The increasing earthquakes-

The thunderous voice-

Too bad they can't see more than two hundred feet without a towering willow's cascading leaves blocking the view.
