just got back from the theater, post-let there be carnage thoughts
shit fuck man I missed going to the movies so much I missed going to the movies SO MUCH I know this isn’t specific to let there be carnage but genuinely movie theaters dark rooms overpriced popcorn overwhelming sound levels my beloveds
truly an incredible amount of romance in the movie. fully leans into the premise that these two are in a relationship together in a way that is jokey at the surface but is clearly working from a genuine emotional place
the end scene...the beach...the toes in the sand...”did you say you love me?” like!!!
for a movie called ‘let there be carnage’ there was. shockingly little actual carnage
I get that’s what happens with a pg13 rating (is that what explains the uh very vivid ‘carnage suffocates a man by literally shoving his tongue into his lungs’ scene bc there wasn’t as much visual gore involved?) but it did feel odd that we only got hints/promises of carnage’s violent potential without really exploring it (even him just going on a violent rampage for the fun of it. like all of his superpower uses were very goal-oriented as opposed to carnage for carnage’s sake)
absolutely a+ usage of their one allotted ‘fuck’
the hinting-at notion of carnage also applies to cletus when he’s just in his woody harrelson form, too. yes, they give details about the violence in his youth, but for a first act that leans so heavily into cletus’ past as a serial killer to set up the chain of events, we hear/learn very very little about what he actually did
the sequence where venom goes on his break-up spiral though...bedecked in glow sticks...gets up on stage to prove how much better he is without eddie...the very mournful “I wish eddie could see me”...truly boyfriends in love with terrible communication skills
I would have happily seen SO much more of venom!michelle williams
don’t get me wrong, I like a movie that can tell its story in 100min, but the actual plot did feel pretty thin
buck WILD to introduce shriek—a character whose abilities are fundamentally at odds with a symbiote’s existence—and not have her introduce any consequences to cletus/carnage beyond hinting at the divide between the two of them
that said, the scene where venom’s like ‘we need sound’ then looks at shriek meaningfully before. fucking bodyslamming her into grace cathedral’s bell to start it ringing KILLED me
I like that they gave dan something to do! I’m a fan of the trend (also see ant man and the wasp) of our male hero recognizing his ex has a healthy relationship with someone else and not resenting her new partner
although.....fucking speaking of the cathedral scene.......”they’re not symbiotic, we are” let there be carnage really said “eddie and venom are soulmates” like!!!
sonny and cher my beloveds
of course I’m annoyed with the post-credits scene but I think the thing that annoys me the most is trying to make the hard pivot into venom being a villain for holland!spider-man
like he looks at peter and instantly goes “gotta eat that boy” inexplicably! absolutely nothing prompts this except wanting to adhere to the comics!!
you could have extended the ‘venom on his own’ storyline and fleshed out the plot a little further by having venom (while possessing random san franciscans) actually eat somebody now that eddie isn’t keeping him in check, foreshadowing that those impulses are just as present and just as powerful
BUT it’s so much more meaningful to have venom—away from eddie, able to act out and go full praying mantis re: head biting—to curb that impulse! even when eddie isn’t around, his voice is in venom’s head! at some level, venom doesn’t want to disappoint eddie even when eddie would never know!!
which is sort of the whole problem with introducing hardy!venom into the holland!spider-man storyline (excepting the much larger, disney is consuming everything please make it stop problem) which is you can’t spend two movies setting up venom as a heroic character (imperfect, admittedly, but still driven by heroic-ish impulses) only to then have him go into some sort of rabid villainous state when he sees holland!spider-man because??? he hates spiders or something I don’t know
i want to end on a high note so woody harrelson’s hawaiian shirt/blazer combination was an absolute look

Thanks for the tag, @gosh-emperor! 💖
How many works do you have on AO3? 10
What’s your total AO3 word count? 152,934
How many fandoms have you written for, and what are they? 5: most of my fics fall under the Marvel umbrella (Spider-Man, Deadpool, Jessica Jones, Gwenpool, Venom, and Silk), but I've also written for The Witcher and drabbles for The Adventure Zone, Star Trek, and original work.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? 1) Caged-Up Animal (Spideypool) - 316 2) Aftermath (Spideypool) - 292 3) Unavailing (Spideypool) - 168 4) The Story Is This (Geraskier) - 167 5) Dreadful Need in the Devotee (Teratober 2020 Challenge) - 132
Do you respond to comments, why or why not? I definitely do! Sometimes it takes me, like, a month and a half because I feel repetitive, but every comment I receive is a wonderful gift and I want my readers to know that!
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I wrote a post-Rare Species Geraskier fic about Jaskier moving on with his life, never seeing Geralt again, but carrying his shame over his feelings for the witcher with him. It's short and sad and I love it.
Do you write crossovers? If so, what’s the craziest one you’ve written? Not even a little bit lol. No shade, but I really dislike crossovers, although I do love a well-executed AU.
Have you ever received hate on a fic? No, none of my fics have enough visibility, or apparently controversy, for that.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes, yes I do. I've written a lot of gender combinations and kinds of sex, but I definitely trend toward incorporating some light kink into things because I'm writing for me.
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Nope, and I highly doubt it would ever happen, but I'm also not out there looking for my work on other sites.
Have you ever had a fic translated? I haven't, but I hope that happens someday! That's how you know you've made it lol.
What’s your all-time favorite ship? Oh gosh. Okay. I'm a sucker for Geralt/Yennefer and Peter Parker/Gwen Stacy, as far as canon ships. For non-canon, I probably would have to say Spideypool.
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? I started a companion to the comic Spider-Man: Blue from MJ's point of view called Mary Jane: Blue. It's got some slight differences from canon, hence being part of my What If? series, but I really wish I had finished it when I was having Spider-Man: Blue feels instead of starting it and putting it away because I'm afraid I won't be able to get back to that place to write it.
What are your writing strengths? Cheeky bants with the lads, getting feels in my smut, getting smut in my feels, and incredibly thorough outlines and research
What are your writing weaknesses? Finishing a longfic in less than 2 years, doing too much research, and fight scenes
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? For the love of HaShem, please find someone who speaks that language to look those parts over for you. Also, please put translations of long chunks of speech either in-line in the text or hyperlink to where they are in your endnotes!
What was the first fandom you wrote for? In, like, my whole life? I definitely wrote My Chemical Romance RPF for a hot minute, including a piece with @gosh-emperor that thankfully has never seen the light of day. As an adult-type fangirl? Spideypool, babeyyyy.
What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written? I just finished a Deadpool/Weasel dubcon fic that is quite frankly fantastic, and I'm really excited to post it once my betas are done with it. The one that was the most fun to write was actually my Teratober challenge series of drabbles for the Monster Smash server!
Tagging: @full-fledged-cumberbitch, @waterme-stories, @lunastories, @atemy, and any other writers who want to hop in!

RWRB Study Guide: Chapter 7
Hi y’all! I’m going through Casey McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue and defining/explaining references! Feel free to follow along, or block the tag #rwrbStudyGuide if you’re not interested!
Crêpe-eating tourists (157): Crepes are a thin, flat pancake traditionally filled with sugar, but commonly filled with other toppings. They are an iconic French dish and are popular with tourists both for this reason and because they are typically inexpensive.
Place du Tertre (157): A square in Paris, it is in the Montmarte district, which is known for its art history.
Crusty baguettes (157): Baguettes are a French bread that is meant to be crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.
Le Monde (158): The most popular French newspaper.

NYU (159): New York University.
The Met (159): The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a famous art museum in New York.
Joanne (160): JK Rowling, who wrote the Harry Potter books, and has been pretty consistently homophobic and transphobic on twitter.
Freddie Mercury (161): Lead singer of the band Queen, Mercury never officially came out, but he had long-term relationships with both men and women and was known for his camp performances, and there are claims that he was “openly gay”. His flamboyance and camp performances, as well as his relationship with partner Jim Hutton, essentially demanded that people simply take him as he was. He died of complications from AIDS in 1991, one day after admitting openly that he had been diagnosed four years earlier. (More)
For context within the book, he wrote “Don’t Stop Me Now”
Elton John (161): A famous British musician. He came out as bisexual in 1976, then as gay in 1992. He and his husband, David Furnish, became civil partners in 2005, the day they became legal in the UK. They were officially married on the ninth anniversary of their civil partnership, the year that gay marriage was legalized within the UK. (More)
Bowie (161): David Bowie, who was a bi British musician and actor who, in 1976, described his bisexuality as “the best thing that ever happened to me”. His wife (who was also bi, and with whom he often shared partners) claimed that he had a relationship with Mick Jagger, though his bisexuality has been consistently erased, both during his life and since his death. (More)
Again for book context, Henry’s dog is named for David Bowie
Jagger (161): Mick Jagger, an English singer/songwriter and member of the Rolling Stones, known for his promiscuity. As mentioned above, he and Bowie pretty clearly had a relationship, though his Wikipedia makes no mention of queerness. (More)
Oakley Street (161): A street that runs through an affluent borough of London.

SCOTUS decision in 2015 (161): The Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage across the US.
Walt Whitman (161): An American poet who wanted to become The American Poet and saw himself as the quintessential American. His poetry often deals with his queerness, and he absolutely slept with Oscar Wilde in the late 1800s.
Fun fact; he is celebrated in the movie The Dead Poets Society, which is incredibly popular with Sad Gay English Majors and which Henry would definitely have seen.
Laws of Illinois 1961 (161): In 1961, Illinois became the first state in the US to repeal its sodomy laws.
White Night Riot (161): A series of riots in San Francisco protesting the lenient sentencing of the man who killed Harvey Milk, the first openly queer politician. The riots were the most violent queer uprising since the events at the Stonewall.
Paris is Burning (161): A 1990s movie celebrating drag ball culture in New York. It celebrates in particular queer communities of color in the late 1980s, when the AIDS epidemic was at its peak.
“If I die of AIDS...” (161): This is a real photo; you can find it here. The man’s jacket could refer to a form of protest called “die-ins”, where people with AIDS would go to a homophobic politician’s office or another public place where they were refused treatment and simply not leave until after they died. (see it here)
Chop my own tit off (162): Fun mythology fact; the Amazons (warrior women from Greek mythology) actually did this to make themselves better archers.
H fucking W (162): George HW Bush, a former US president.

James (162): The British king known for translating the Bible and being just... indescribably gay and very deeply horny. He promoted his boyfriend, George Villers, to the highest non-royal position in the UK within a few years of starting to date him. James’s friends actively tried to set him up with hot guys for their own political gain.
Alexander (163): Alexander Hamilton was an incredibly bi founding father. He’s remembered for founding our current national banking system, having the first ever American sex scandal, and for literally never shutting up or knowing how to stop being A Lot All The Time.

Surfside (171): A beach in Texas.
Adderall (172): A prescription drug taken for ADHD but commonly abused by students to help them stay awake for all-nighters or focused for unhealthily long study sessions. However, given McQuinston’s claim that Alex has undiagnosed ADHD, it likely helped him to be able to focus and helped his brain work the way it was expected to.
Almond milk (vs. dairy) (173): Texas has a huge dairy industry, and almond milk is not great for the environment.
The Gun File (173): American gun law is so deeply broken.

As I see you like your rare pairs how about, kagekuroo or oikagekuroo. I dreamt of them one night and now I’m thirstying bout em
v  Hgnnnnnn…damn you, anon. Damn you…
KageKuroo
No one saw this one coming.
Actually, no one even knew about it, until on a training camp where the current first years are third years now Some of the already graduated senpais came to help.
And here comes Mr. Roaster Head strolling in like he owns the place, goes up to the new captain of Karasuno and grabs his ass.
There were gasps of horror in the entire place, the only different reactions were Tsukishima’s, who knew about this very well, somehow, don’t ask he doesn’t reveal his sources Put a password on your phone Kags, Tobio who just scowls, before planting a kiss on the gropper’s lips and Kuroo with his shit-eating grin.
Then there comes the explaining. Apparently after the battle at the garbage dump, Tobio asked Tetsurou to help him improve his blocking, The ever-this-nice person agrees immediately. Ends up, Tobio barely needs help, cuz “The hell kid, you’re better all-rounder than nearly all players i’ve meet!”
But that doesn’t mean the ‘training sessions’ stop, oh no, they just turn into study dates at first. Kuroo volunteered to help the crow, as he is in Class 5, college preparation class. The win-win for both is Tsukishima’s gaping fish face after seeing Kageyama getting higher scores than him on a few subjects.
BUT IT DOESN’T STOP THERE, it’s just plain dates from than on, during vacation. Kags thinks going to the park alone for hours, having a picnic, sharing food and water bottles, talking for personal matters ‘till the sun goes down, going to a pizzeria and to the cinema together, staying in each other houses on weekends and sharing a bed is something friends do. Kuroo was about to commit homicide.
In the end it took Kenma, Akaashi, Bokuto, Yaku and Kai -Or the so called “Done with Kuroo’s shit group”- to tell him to get himself together and tell the damn man, he likes him in a romantic way. After hours, days of said dude freaking out how to do it, what to say, when, will he accept and the “Done with Kuroo’s shit group” being the ones about to commit homicide, they finally came up with a game plan.
Now, Tetsurou wasn’t sure if he should be happy, cry or yell when that damn, beautiful boy, who nearly drove him to getting a stroke with how nervous he was, just shrugged and said “Oh, i like you in that way too, Kuroo-san. Took you a while, please take care of me.”
“Wait, all this times that were dates? We weren’t just hanging out?” Anguished noises
It would be kinda hard to maintain a long distance-relationship for other people, but Kuroo decided to go to Niigata University, in Niigata-shi, which is 167 km (104 miles) away from Miyagi. They see each other every weekend, and Kuroo makes sure he texts at least 27 times every single day.
Now, you may think the first thing two people, volleyball players, one obsessed with the sport, would do is practice? Nah. The moment they are in the same room alone, the make out begins. It ain’t sweet it’s hardcore, i tell ya, it’s fuckin’ sexy.
After that they become the laziest people on the planet. Watching some of Kuroo’s favourite documentaries on the couch, cuddling, with some sweet dessert Kags made on the coffee table.
People either think they have no shame in public, or don’t show any PDA, but…it’s neither? Tetsurou can get pretty shy in times, while Kags doesn’t care much, either way. So, if they are with close friends they can go as far as sitting in each other’s lap, but just for walking outside, simple hand holding and little, quick kisses.
Whenever either of them is stresesed over something, be it school work, an upcoming match, an argument with a friend, or family, they both do the same thing. Staying home, gentle touches, nearly silent voices as they talk over the matter, using comforting words. Once Tetsurou had over-worked himself so much, he yelled at Tobio for no reason before storming out of the door his face as red as a tomato. Tobio knows better than to follow him, sure he gets worried once it starts raining, but thankfully his lover returns just in time, a broken apology on his lips, tears ready to stream down, the moment he is in the younger’s embrace they stream freely.
If either gets sick is a bit of a differnet story. Kuroo acts like he can die from the smallest things, while Kags might as well just go with his day as if nothing’s wrong. Tobio handles it calmly when learning his boyfriend is sick, coming over making warm soup and making sure he’s as comfortable as possible. While Kuroo caught the first train the moment he learned, during exam week and came like a mad man. Tobio damn near kicked his ass back to Niigata-shi.
In short they go from the hottest thing in the room, to the most cheesy one in the span of 00.2, no one can stand spending more than 30 minutes with both of them together. Tsukishima suffers more than all.
OiKageKuroo this might be just an excuse for Oikage shut up
Honestly, had Oikawa have taken the stick out of his ass he would’ve already been with Tobio, but. He’s hopeless, what can i say.
Oiks was, oh so lucky, to end up in the same University as Tetsurou! He didn’t even know the dude, so imagine his surprise when he was waiting in the line for Starbucks and heard an offended gasp behind him. There stands a person who looks like he just got out of bed, talking to himself; “No way, that’s the one- damned senpai who doesn’t deserve all that admiration from Tobio-” “My adorable kouhai, Tobio-chan?!” “...” “...”
Needless to say while dear blueberry was helping an underclassmen his phone didn’t stop ringing, once he finally picked up he wished he hasn’t, rest in peace to his ear “Tobio! It’s one thing to barely contact me, but you could’ve told me you’re- dating- this rooster!” “...Oh, Tetsurou-san is there? Please don’t speak of my boyfriend like that, Oikawa-san” “Disgraceful Tobio, disgraceful.”
Oikawa tried to avoid Kuroo as much as possible, but it wasn’t all that easy. They had a lot of classes together, he almost can’t believe they haven’t seen each other before. The teacher paired them up for projects several times, thanks to that those two managed to hold a conversastion together. It was mostly about Tobio, volleyball, Tobio, schoolwork, latest trends, Tobio, movies, did i say Tobio?
“Huh, that guy is not bad after all. Feel like we understand each other for some reason.” “Maybe, cuz you’re both head over heels for his boyfriend and also, you’re both kinda trash? Poor Kageyama, with that taste...” “Why are you like that, Iwa-chan?”
After getting himself together and slightly pushing his pride aside, Oikawa asked Kuroo to accompany him on his visit home, to get in touch with Tobio again. For some reason Kuroo didn’t argue at all.
Kageyama was pretty surprised to see not only his boyfriend, but his favourite senpai, and the person he once and still held feelings for on his doorstep. He expected it to be much more awkward, but they’ve both grown, so once Kuroo left his things and kissed his lover before heading out, Oikawa and Kags feel into an easy talk about various topics.
One of them was Tobio’s realtionship with Tetsurou, by the end of the story about that Tooru looking down at the cup of coffee Tobio made for him, with more milk just how he likes it and despite the sad look in his eyes he smiled. “You’re happy, right Tobio?” “Huh? Yeah, very much so.” “I see. Good. That’s good.”
After that the two trash kings friendship become really strong. They spend most of their time on campus together, little by little, Tooru began to understand what Tobio sees in the man in front of him.
Out of nowhere on Friday, Kuroo entered Oikawa’s room with a serious face which can make anyone back off. Certainly, Oikawa wasn’t expecting to hear what came next. “You love him don’t you?” “Huh?! You mean...I, he...it’s in the pa-” “I can understand why. He’s amazing, i can’t help, but feel i don’t deserve him sometimes. Bet you’ve felt the same, that’s why you haven’t made a move...But listen. I hate to admit it, but he surely holds more than platonic feelings towards you. I’m not saying he doesn’t love me, i know he does, just...i’m not the only one.”
A silence was hanging in the air for minutes, until Oikawa broke it with a raspy voice; “I really don’t deserve him... Tetsu-chan, i was horrible...he never hated me for it, but i ca’t stop thinking about how cold i was towards him at times. Yet...i also feel in love, so selfish.” “That’s all in the past, isn’t it? C’mon come with me and tell him all of this.” “But-” “No. i want him to be happy nothing else. I’m sure you feel the same. Besides...seeing you happy as well brings me even more joy.”
It was winter holiday when they got around to do it. Tooru waited ‘till Christmas, seemed like the best moment. All three of them were watching everyone else who were invited to celebrate in the snow. Taking a deep breath Tooru took Tobio’s right hand, while Tetsurou took the left. Royal blue eyes looked at both of them in confusion.
“Tobio...listen. Straight to the point. I love you. Not just from this year, since god knows how long, but i was so stupid and never told you. But then...Tetsurou came, he made me realize how much i will be missing. Heh, who would’ve thought i would fall for this garbage too.” “Look who’s talking.” “Shush. I’m sorry for all the times i’ve made you sad. Let me repay you for them. I love you. I want to be by your side, by both of your sides.”
Kuroo rested his head on the youngest head, the boy was shaking not from the cold, but the amount of emotions going through him. Before anyone realized there were three warm smiles, plus tears on the trio’s faces as they fall in a hug together.
Nothing changed much after that. Everyone were simply amazed at Tobio’s patience. The night cuddles turned into a sandwich with Tobio in between. The make out sessions somehow went even higher. How can this be so sexy everyone asked themselves. The teasing went to the seven sky as well, Oikawa and Kuroo were simply trolls, but Tobio barely had to try to shut them down.
Oikawa’s knee ended up giving out during practice in University, the moment Kuroo heard the pained noise coming from him he didn’t even think twice before taking Tooru in his arms, who hold onto his shirt for dear life and rushed to the hospital. The moment they took him in, Kuroo called Kageyama, who even tho tried not to show how panicked he was when explaing to Tsukishima he needs to handle things, his vice-captain saw straight threw him. He calmed Tobio down as much as he can before telling him to go and that Akiteru will drive him there.
With how crazy the older Tsukishima was going they reached the hospital in Niigata-shi five times faster then with a train. Tobio entered out of breath still in gym shorts and white T-shirt, he was greeted with Tetsurou who looks just as bad, they cold only hold onto each other before the doctor let them in. Tooru tried to smile, but everyone in the room knew it will be completly fake. He won’t be able to play anymore. The other two kept strong faced as they let the patient cry in their arms.
People, his family, Tooru himself expected him to took much longer to recover emotionally after that, but with the two boys by his side it didn’t take long. By endless encouragement by both of them, he finally tried his hand at writing and hell, he was darn amazing in it! Seems like when you write with your loved ones in mind it comes as easy as breathing.
Their relationship continued for the better, it wasn’t the best. Each of them had a lot of flaws, but loved each other with them. They weren’t a perfect couple, but that didn’t matter, as long as they stayed by each other’s side.
Tobio got into the school. Good luck to all those classmates.

Competitor Research - The Ultimate Search Engine Optimization Solution
If you’re designing a new online venture, or are simply sick and tired of losing to competitors in organic search, then you need to do an SEO competitor analysis.
You can learn many things from your competitor. In fact competitors are a goldmine of information that can inform you about every aspect of your SEO strategy and help to increase your website’s organic traffic.
In solid terms, performing an SEO competitor analysis lets you:
Get In Touch
Learn what works and what doesn’t in your industry.
Find competitors’ weaknesses, and capitalize on them.
Find competitors’ strengths, and replicate them.
Understand what SEO tasks to prioritize going forward.
Understand how difficult outperforming competitors in the SERPs are likely to be.
Here, I will run through the SEO competitive analysis process for a hypothetical new infographic design tool—Minimagraphic.com.
Minimagraphic.com — a hypothetical new infographic design tool launching soon (maybe).
#makeInfographicsGreatAgain
We have also added a competitive analysis template so you can follow along with your site.
Things to Keep In Mind
Getting Started
You can do this complete process with only two tools
Ahrefs (take a 7‑day trial)
This Google Sheets template (IMPORTANT: make a copy!)
It would be great if you also make a copy of the completed sheet for our hypothetical website, as that may come in handy for clarification if any of the instructions given below feel unclear. (Hopefully, they won’t!)
You can do that here.
Got it? Let’s get started
Identify Competitors
First we need to identify our main competitors than we should proceed further
These are the websites struggling for our desired keywords in organic search.
Some competitors that come to our mind are Canva, Piktochart, Infogram, easel.ly, and Visme  regarding our hypothetical infographic design tool However, our organic search competitors may not be the same as our direct business competitors.
So let’s first look at how potential customers would search for our service.
I thought that this would be something like “infographic design tool,” but it appears that I was wrong as when I search for this in Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, it tells me there is no search volume.
So let’s inspect the “Also rank for” report and see if we can find a better keyword.
It seems like “infographic maker” is the most famous way people search for such tools.
Now let’s see the SERP overview to see who currently ranks in the top five.
Not an Ahrefs user?
Run a Google search instead.
It appears that our top five competitors are Piktochart, Venngage, Canva, Visme, and Infogram.
The interesting thing is, Easel.ly didn’t make the cut as they don’t rank in the top 10.
This is why you should not always rely on your instincts for direct business competitors because they’re not always competitors when it comes to SEO.
SEO is like another world, imagine that a person has a butcher business in a small town. The business that keeps him awake at night is the other small butcher down the road. However, when it’s come to SEO, they’re no competitors because they don’t even have a website.
I will note these five competitors to my spreadsheet.
PRO TIP
If you are trying to find competitors for a blog or ecommerce site, then looking for sites that rank for a single keyword may not be the best way to go about things.
That is because you are probably targeting hundreds or thousands of keywords and topics across many pages.
So it is good to see who is competing with you across the board.
For this, you can use the Competing domains report in Ahrefs Site Explorer.
Site Explorer > enter your domain > Organic search > Competing domains
Analyze the Competitive Landscape
Next, we have a high-level view of the competitive landscape.
To do that, we will pull a small number of key stats and SEO metrics which should give us an idea as to how established the competition is.
Let’s use Ahrefs Batch Analysis tool to do this for all competitors’ websites at once.
Batch Analysis > Enter competitors’ domains > Analyze
Batch Analysis will return many useful stats for each site, and I am interested in:
Domain Rating (DR)
Ahrefs Rank (AR)
Number of referring domains
Estimated organic search traffic
Estimated number of keyword rankings
Now add them to our sheet.
To explain these SEO metrics a bit more:
Domain Rating (DR):
Having a high DR score means that the website has a solid backlink profile. Instead of considering DR absolutely you should judge it relatively. For your understanding let’s take an example, suppose that your website is DR30 and your competitor is DR50, that is a bit higher. If your website is DR30 whereas yours competitor site is DR90 that is similar comparing your mom and pop store to Walmart—they aren’t your competitor.
Ahrefs Rank (AR):
Having a low Ahrefs rank means that the website is strong. AR explains the same thing as DR but with more details. For example, if you have two competitors with the same DR like DR33 websites, you can use AR to see which is the stronger of the two sites.
Referring domains:
If your links are of good quality then having a large number of referring domains could also mean that the website is strong A high number of referring domains can also indicate a strong site—provided that those links aren’t low-quality. However, keep in mind that grabbing DR is always useful as this takes into account both the quality and quantity of links to a website.
Organic traffic & keywords:
This is quite obvious that the higher these numbers are, the better the website is performing in organic search.
In simple words the more distance between your stats and yours competitor stats, the more you have to struggle.
Still these metrics don’t explain everything about our competitors’ SEO progress.
Study Backlink Growth
We have studied approximately  930 million pages and it appears to us that link popularity     is a clear SEO “ranking factor”
That is why we have to learn more about our competitors’ link building efforts.
Let’s look at the speed with which they acquire new referring domains (linking sites), as this gives us an approximate target to shoot for with our link building.
To do this, we’ll use Ahrefs Site Explorer.
Site Explorer > Enter domain > Overview > Referring Domains graph > Set to ‘One year’
For each participant, we take the number of all referring domains that today have minus the same number from a year ago, and then divide it by twelve to get the average monthly value.
Here is the calculation for Visme:
(7,603 — 5,599) / 12 = 167 new referring domains per month (on average)
Also keep in mind that this is the cumulative growth or decline in referring domains. For example, if a competitor gets links from a hundred new RDs in a month but loses links from ten existing RDs, their cumulative growth is ninety.
Let’s also inspect the growth trend for our other competitors.
We need to check if there is an element of consistency or not, In other words, do their link profiles show consistent or inconsistent growth or decline?
For Venngage, besides from a small irregularity earlier this year, their growth has been relatively consistent.
This might be natural, or it might be the byproduct of long-term link building efforts.
Whatever the case is, it would be worth following these two articles to go deeper into their backlink profile to see what we can learn… once finished with the basic competitive analysis, of course.
For Piktochart, their growth seems more inconsistent.
They have gained the experience of “hockey stick” growth between May and July last year, which may be the indication of a specific piece of content performing well, or them ramping up their existing link building efforts. It could also provide an indication of negative SEO attacks.
To get a sense of which, we can check the New referring domains report.
Site Explorer > Referring domains > New > use the date range to filter for that period
It is probably a negative SEO attack if most of the domains look like spam. (Hint: Confirm this by looking at the New backlinks report for the same date range)
It is probably down to a particular piece of content doing well if most of the links point to the same web page. If the spike happened recently, use the Best by Link Growth report in Site Explorer to help identify which piece of content attracted the links.
It’s likely the ramping up of existing link building efforts if you find lots of links from a specific type of content—e.g., guest posts, resource pages, etc.
For now, I am going to add some growth-related stats for each competitor to my spreadsheet.
Find Superfans
Those who have linked to our competitors on multiple occasions are called Superfans. These are people with whom it is easy for us to build relationships because they tend to link out to websites they like regularly.
In order to find these people, we can check the Referring domains report in Ahrefs Site Explorer.
Site Explorer > Referring Domains > add a “dofollow” filter > sort by “links to target / dofollow”
Now we will go through the list for industry blogs.
Here is just one that stood out for Canva:
If we hit the caret, we can see that this site links numerous times across many blog posts.
By just spending five seconds on the website we found that this is a single author blog by a woman named Elaine—she is the one with whom we may want to build a relationship and introduce to our product.
Now look for five superfans for each of our competitors and add them to our sheet.
Find Broken Pages
Have you ever heard the saying that one person’s junk is another person’s treasure?
That saying is true on the web too.
So now we need to see if our competitors’ websites for a specific type of junk: broken pages.
To this task we will use the Best by links report in Ahrefs Site Explorer.
Site Explorer > enter competitors domain > Best by links > add a “404 not found” filter > sort by the Referring domains column (high to low)
Sidenote: I am searching for content on a subdomain here so that I only see dead informational pages—e.g., blog posts, infographics, etc.
If we see broken pages on our competitors’ websites, that have backlinks, and are also somewhat relevant to our business, then we may be able to take advantage of such pages by:
Figuring out what the dead page used to be;
Publishing something similar, but better;
Finding everyone linking to the dead resource (use the Backlinks report in Site Explorer)
Asking them to swap out the dead link in favor of our working resource.
Learn how to carry out this strategy in our broken link building guide.
Now we are going to focus on competitive analysis and not link building, let’s just add any related broken pages from our five competitors to the spreadsheet.
Quick Note: In Following step (6 , 7 and 8) we will focus on organic traffic
By having a knowledge of which countries our competitors get the bulk of their organic traffic from can help us to understand where the opportunity lies in this niche.
For this, we will use Ahrefs Site Explorer.
Site Explorer > enter competitor’s domain > Overview > Organic search tab
Let’s add the top five countries along with their traffic percentages to our spreadsheet.
I’ll then do the same for our other competitors.
Here’s what we get:
Seems like the United States is where the bulk of the traffic opportunity lies in this niche, as this is where our competitors get approximately 31% of their traffic from on average.
There is some opportunity in other English-speaking countries like the UK and Canada too.
So we now know that we should almost certainly prioritize content creation for folks in these countries, as this is where we see the bulk of search demand.
Hardly surprising.
However, the fact that there is traffic potential in Latin America and Asia has got me thinking: perhaps it would make sense to translate our landing pages into Spanish, Indian, and possibly Indonesian?
We could even launch a multilingual blog to maximize traffic from these countries.
That’s what we did here at Ahrefs—we have a Spanish blog and a Chinese blog.
The Spanish version of the Ahrefs Blog.
The Chinese version of the Ahrefs Blog.
Many of our landing pages are available in multiple languages too.
Pro Tip:
Organic traffic is not always representative of traffic value. It might be misleading to look solely at organic traffic numbers.
For example, Visme gets roughly the same amount of search traffic from the UK and Mexico.
But if we look at the traffic value for Mexico VS UK, We see that UK traffic is worth 700%+ more!
So it probably makes sense for us to prioritize UK traffic growth.
Break it Down
What Are The Different Types Of SEO?
At Syndiket, we believe four types of SEO exist – and we have an acronym to represent those 4 types of SEO. The acronym is T.R.A.P.
“T” stands for Technical, “R” stands for Relevancy, “A” stands for Authority, and “P” stands for popularity. Search engine optimization has many smaller divisions within the 4 types, but all of them can be placed into one of these 4 buckets.
I’m Interested!
Technical SEO
Generally, technical SEO for local businesses carry the least importance for ranking. Technical SEO has a bare minimum that is required and this usually includes things like site speed, indexation issues, crawlability, and schema. Once the core technical parts are done, minimal upkeep is required.
Relevancy SEO
Relevancy is one of trivium elements of SEO. It has equal importance with popularity signals and authority signals. Relevancy signals are based on algorithmic learning principles. Bots crawl the internet every time a searcher has a search. Each search is given a relevancy score and the URLs that pop up for a query. The higher the relevancy score you attain, the greater your aggregated rating becomes in Google’s eyes. Digital marketing is a strange thing in 2020, and ranking a website requires the website to be relevant on many fronts.
Authority SEO
Google’s Co-creator, Larry Page, had a unique idea in 1998 which has led to the modern-day Google Empire. “Page Rank”, named after Larry Page himself, was the algorithm that established Google as a search engine giant. The algorithm ranked websites by authority.
Every page of a website has authority and the sum of all pages has another authority metric. The authority metric is largely determined by how many people link to them (backlinks). The aggregate score of all pages pointing to a domain creates the domain score, which is what Syndiket calls “Domain Rating”, per Ahrefs metrics. The more a site is referenced, the more authority it has. But, the real improvement to the algorithm came when Google began to classify authority weight.
If Tony Hawk endorsed Syndiket for skateboarding, it would carry a lot more authority than 5 random high school kids endorsing Syndiket. This differentiation in authority happened in 2012 with the Penguin update. Authority SEO is complicated but VERY important.
Popularity
Popularity signals are especially strong for GMB or local SEO, but popularity and engagement are used for all rankings. The goal of this signal is for Google to verify its own algorithm. You can check off all the boxes, but if your content is something real people hate, Google has ways to measure that. Syndiket has proprietary methods of controlling CTR (click-through rate) but we also infuse CRO methods into our work to make sure people actually like the content. Social shares and likes are also included in this bucket.

Spy on Competitors’ Organic Keywords
Next, we need to find out which keywords are currently driving organic traffic to our competitors’ sites.
We can do it by running the Organic keywords report for each domain.
Site Explorer > enter competitor’s domain > Organic search > Organic keywords
Above we can see that visme.co currently ranks for 133,667 keywords in the US.
By default, the Organic Keywords report shows keyword rankings for the country that generates the most search traffic. And that is not a problem, but if you want to see keyword data for a different country, hit “more” and choose from any of the 150+ countries in our database.
Now look for some juicy keywords that might be worth targeting.
There are some that jump out right away such as “infographic maker,” “infographic creator,” etc. But there are also a lot of unrelated results muddying the waters.
So now first exclude all branded keywords with the “exclude” function.
I will also try to filter only for keywords for which our competitor ranks in the top 10 so that we only see the most relevant keywords.
Let’s keep things simple for now and note down the top five relevant, non-branded keywords sending the most traffic to our competitors, and their search volumes.
A few of those keywords would be a good match for our homepage. Others would make better blog posts (For example “what is an infographic?”).
Note: If you’re following along and are only interested in finding keyword ideas for your homepage, use the “URL” mode in Site Explorer as opposed to “*.domain/*”. That way, you will only see keyword suggestions from the homepage instead of the whole site. And don’t forget to exclude branded searches from the report!
PRO TIP
Some of the keywords that I noted down have high Keyword Difficulty (KD) scores, which mean that they will be hard to rank for without building lots of links.
For example, “infographic maker” has a KD score of 73 … and will need backlinks from approximately 235 domains to rank in the top 10.
Recommended reading: Learn more about how we calculate Keyword Difficulty.
I am not really concerned about this right now as I am looking more for “ultimate goal” keywords.
If you are following along and would prefer to find keywords that you stand a chance at ranking for in the short-to-medium-term, feel free to filter for keywords with a low KD score.
Spy on Competitors’ Featured Snippets
One additional thing you should pay attention to while analyzing your competitor’s organic traffic:
SERP features for which your competitors rank.
Featured snippets alone show up for approximately 12% of search queries, as per our study…
… And they get approximately 9% of clicks from the results on the first page:
So let’s keep things simple and focus solely on those.
The first thing is that I need to know which featured snippets our competitors own and for that, I’ll use Ahrefs Site Explorer.
Site Explorer > enter competitors domain > Organic search > Organic keywords > SERP features filter > Featured snippets > Only linking to target
Piktochart owns 87 snippets in the US right now and gets a fair amount of traffic as a result.
Visme owns 216.
I will add these numbers to my sheet for each competitor.
To be honest, if our competitors rank for a lot of featured snippets, there could be an opportunity for us to do the same.
This can even be easy traffic because it’s not always the #1 ranking page that owns the snippet.
59.2% of featured snippets come from pages ranking in positions 2–5.
In other words, even if the SERP is competitive, there’s still a chance of owning the snippet provided that we can make it to the top 5.
Recommended reading: How to Optimize for Google’s Featured Snippets in 2020
QUICK NOTE
In the few steps (#9, #10, and #11), we’ll delve deeper into competitors’ content.
Find Content Gaps
If you look at a particular site for some information that is not there, this is what a content gap is.
Content gaps in SEO are keywords for which your competitors rank, but you don’t, that is a gap you will probably want to fill.
To find content gaps, we can use Ahrefs Content Gap tool.
Site Explorer > enter your domain > Content gap
You can see that this prefills the “But the following target doesn’t rank for” field with our domain.
Now we need to fill the other fields with competitors.
I will then set it to “Show keywords that all of the below targets rank for,” tick the “at least one of the targets should rank in the top 10” box, and run the search.
You can see that this returns some quite relevant keywords above.
Sidenote: If you are following along and don’t see any relevant keywords, feel free to loosen the settings a little and find keywords for which two, three, or four of your competitors rank, rather than all of them.
We have limited resources therefore targeting all these keywords is an impossible task.
Let’s use the filters to focus in on low/medium difficulty, high-volume opportunities.
Having low difficulty scores means that it would be easy to rank for whereas the solid search volume means that ranking will give a nice bump to our search traffic.
However, some of these keywords look to be ones we already found in the previous step.
So I am just going to add the five most relevant new keywords to my sheet.
Find Competitors’ Most Popular Content
There is no doubt that keyword search is a critical part of SEO but these days, Google’s understanding of the intent behind searches is arguably better than ever.
This is why; one page can easily rank for hundreds or even thousands of long-tail keywords.
By finding our competitors’ top pages, we can figure out which of their articles are:
ranking for a ton of keywords
pulling in loads of traffic
Then we can write about these overarching topics and earn some traffic.
For this, we can use the Top Pages report in Ahrefs Site Explorer.
Keep in mind that we are interested in finding blog posts here so if possible, we actually need to search the blog folder URL/subdomain as opposed to the entire domain.
Site Explorer > enter competitor’s domain > select “prefix” mode > Top pages
PRO TIP
If you are not sure where your competitor’s blog is located?
Check the Top subfolders report in Site Explorer and look for their blog path.
If you don’t find anything, check the Top subdomains report instead. Some websites host their blog on a subdomain.
Either way, make sure the traffic percentage for the subfolder/subfolder is in the doubt digits. If it isn’t, then it’s likely that their blog posts aren’t nested within that URL structure.
In which case, stick with a domain search.
Now one thing to note about this report is that the pages on sites with the most organic traffic often tend to have a lot of referring domains. That is hardly surprising, as backlinks are a strong ranking factor.
So let’s skim this report for each competitor and eyeball the RD column.
What we are looking for are pages with lots of traffic but not too many referring domains, as these are likely to be much easier to compete with.
I will add five relevant pages that fit the bill to my sheet, plus their traffic.
Sidenote: If you are interested in the individual keywords for which these top pages rank, click the caret in the keywords column.
Find Competitors’ Most Linked Content
Links mean referrals and often as a result, more organic search traffic.
So we know we need to build links, but where do we begin?
We will see what is working for our competitors.
The Best by links report in Ahrefs Site Explorer shows competitors’ most linked content. If it worked for them, then something similar will probably work for us.
Site Explorer > enter competitor’s blog subfolder/subdomain > Organic search > Best by links
Sidenote: If you are doing this for a competitor whose blog posts aren’t nested under a subdomain (e.g., blog.domain.com/…) or subfolder (e.g., domain.com/blog/…) then use their domain instead. You will have to be a little more vigilant when browsing the report.
Here, I will add the URLs of the five most relevant top pages from each competitor, the number of referring domains to each page, and what “type” of content it is to my sheet.
Now we can find at a glance what types of content work best for each competitor and in general.
For example, 60% of the most linked pages articles from Venngage are listicles, and it’s a similar story for Visme too.
Sidenote: Not every niche is the same. You may see that a different type of content is more popular in your niche.
On the other side, gaps can also present opportunities.
For example, Canva has a lot of links to text-heavy content. Such content could be simplified as an infographic and possibly attract even more links.
We could also use what is commonly known as the ‘skyscraper’ technique to attract links:
Create a similar but even better piece of content
Show it to everyone who links to our competitor’s now inferior content
Ask them to swap out the link in favor of our superior content
If you are wondering how we can find out who links to our competitor’s content, all we need to do is click the number under the Referring domains column, and we will be able to see all the sites linking to that page.
In other words, our competitor has kindly created a list of prospects for us.
Find Competitors’ PPC Keywords
Analyzing competitors’ PPC activity can be perceptive when it comes to planning an SEO strategy for one simple reason:
If they’re paying for traffic from a keyword, then that keyword is most likely profitable.
To find our competitors’ PPC keywords, let’s use the PPC keywords report in Ahrefs Site Explorer.
Site Explorer > enter competitors domain > Paid search > PPC keywords
It looks like Venngage is bidding on a lot of infographic-related terms.
Which lead me to another point:
If you look at the competitors’ PPC data, you can find small volumes of keywords with high conversion, which can be easily omitted when conducting keyword research.
For example, a keyword like “make infographics online” (70 searches per month) is likely to have a much higher conversion rate than “creator of free infographics” (600 searches per month).
If the conversion rate for a keyword of 70 search queries per month is 20%, and the conversion rate for a keyword of 600 search queries per month is 2%, what do you think is the most appropriate keyword to rank?
I’m sure you’ve already done the math. That low-volume keyword will make more money.
Following this logic, I’m going to add five PPC keywords for each participant to my sheet, but I will intentionally choose keywords that, in my opinion, can convert well.
DISCLAIMER Take this idea with a pinch of salt. Just because a competitor spends money on a checkpoint does not necessarily know what they are doing. Before using PPC, you can check any keywords you find before trying to get a ranking for yourself.
Learn From Competitors’ PPC Ads
Viewing an ad copy of PPC members can help write title tags and descriptions that increase CTR.
This is because competitors pay cold cash to attract customers with specific keywords, and Google encourages more relevant ads with lower CPCs.
So it’s in their interest to make sure their ads win the click!
To use the PPC keyword report, look again at the copy of your competitor for the keyword for which we want to assign a rating, “Infographic maker:”
Site Explorer > enter competitors domain > Paid search > PPC keywords
To preview an ad for a keyword, hover over the yellow ‘Ad’ icon.
They seem to use speed, cost (or lack thereof) and ingenuity to lure clicks.
These are all things we could incorporate into our meta titles and descriptions to generate more traffic from organic search.

Final Thoughts
Competitive analysis is a vast field; everything mentioned above is just the tip of the iceberg.
If you are familiar with Ahrefs, then you know that there are many additional reports in which we can dive deeper into the overall strategy of our competitors in the field of marketing, content and link building.
You just need to follow the process described above and then use other reports to delve into any Ahrefs area of interest (and possibly other competitive analysis tools).

Figuring out what the dead page used to be;
Publishing something similar, but better;
I'm Interested!

Fox news How this Super Bowl matchup spawned from one player - NFL.com
Tumblr media
Fox news
MIAMI -- For all the Joe Montana regalia in the lead-up to Sizable Bowl LIV, it's the account of a less famous quarterback which sheds extra mild on this clash between the high-octane offenses of the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas Metropolis Chiefs.
Alex Smith rescued each of these beforehand downtrodden organizations from their darkest hours, only to be traded in for a sleeker quarterback model as soon as all of these miles out of the barren house piled up in entrance of the principle-down marker.
Having survived a gargantuan preference of failed regimes early in his Bay Dwelling occupation, Smith led the 49ers to the 2011 NFC Championship Sport before Jim Harbaugh and his workers made the daring decision to space their Sizable Bowl-caliber offense in the palms of younger playmaker Colin Kaepernick. Salvaged from the San Francisco scrap heap in 2013, Smith became as soon as summoned to the Midwest to aid Andy Reid resurrect a floundering Chiefs outfit that had fallen to 2-14 under Romeo Crennel.
FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD
Though Kansas Metropolis managed to amass 74 aspects in Smith's first two postseason appearances with the franchise -- a gutting 45-44 loss to the Colts and a 30-0 laugher over the Texans -- his conservative passing trend merely left too many plays on the discipline in aid-to-aid playoff disappointments versus the Patriots and Steelers. Once Reid and his entrance place of job assessed the strengths and weaknesses of their have Sizable Bowl-caliber roster in the gap months of 2017, the Chiefs outfoxed four diverse Patrick Mahomes suitors to draft Smith's eventual supplanter.
Smith restful had a possibility to stave off Mahomes, finding aberrant downfield effectivity with deep possibility Tyreek Hill in a occupation-only 2017 odd season, only to resign a 21-3 halftime lead in heartbreaking fashion, falling to the less-gifted Titans in the Wild Card Round.
Between Smith's final Kansas Metropolis victory and one other early-January exit, although, his fate had already been sealed.
In a odd-season finale satirically billed as meaningless, with the subsequent week's dwelling-discipline advantage already salvage, Reid unlocked the major to the NFL's next worthy offense with a pinch-hitting Mahomes at the helm.
"I went into that sport feeling cherish we could possibly score anytime," Reid disclosed to the Round The NFL Podcast at the March 2018 Annual League Assembly, two weeks after finalizing Smith's trade to the Washington Redskins. "After I got into the game, I felt the identical facet."
The Chiefs had gone 30 years without a victory from a quarterback drafted and developed in Kansas Metropolis. After snapping out of that dry spell in one fell swoop from his hand-picked franchise savior, neophyte total manager Brett Veach raised eyebrows at some level of the football landscape by declaring that the unproven Mahomes became as soon as already one of many perfect gamers he had ever considered.
Of us that had witnessed firsthand Mahomes' no-impress passes and downfield air raids in practices shared Veach's unshakeable self belief, prompting instantaneous behavioral changes. For the principle time in his 15-year occupation, punter Dustin Colquitt started stashing his gloves in his jersey so he'd be ready to take for the rash of extra aspects that would inevitably apply Mahomes' lickety-split-strike rankings.
Primarily the most glaring trade befell in the thoughts of a head coach who as soon as explained his play-calling job as getting paid to "score into a rhythm with the guy calling the defense" on the diverse aspect. The history of football's offensive scheme is a leisurely gravitation far from the violent congestion throughout the discipline and toward multi-dimensional aerial assaults permitting the ball to be superior on both the X and Y axis.
The transition from Smith to Mahomes supplied an accelerated model of that evolution. Smith's penchant for throwing brief passes in key eventualities no longer only tied Reid's play-calling palms, nonetheless also impressed Football Outsiders to create the ALEX (Air Much less Anticipated) quarterback metric which measures the moderate difference between how far a quarterback throws a bound (air yards) and the plot many yards he wants for a first down. Lacking context, susceptible football stats could possibly inform us which plays the quarterback made, nonetheless they bound over the missed opportunities when the trigger is never any longer pulled.
Whereas the gridiron remained the identical size with Mahomes under heart, Reid rapidly learned that he could possibly stress defenses by forcing them to quilt your complete size and width of the discipline, versus the condensed space boxed in by the principle-down marker. By warding off mistakes and flying over the trench battle throughout the discipline to beat excellent protection, the apostate Chiefs possess place to leisure as soon as and for the total mild pigskin idea that only three things can happen on a ahead bound -- and two of them are execrable.
To impress into the thoughts of a play-caller, it's instructive to scrutinize the principle 28 minutes of video games, before the clock and score differential launch to dictate tendencies. Whereas the Chiefs carried out bound plays honest appropriate 52 percent of the time in the principle 28 minutes of Smith's starts from 2013 through '17, per The Athletic's Mike Sando, that quantity has surged to a league-main 65 percent in 2019. Reid has learned his rhythm in the conclusion that running plays are almost wasteful with the perfect-rated quarterback (108.9) in NFL history orchestrating the offense.
After reaching the 30-level stamp honest appropriate four events in 27 postseason video games at some level of the principle 58 years of the franchise's existence, the Chiefs possess scored 30 or extra aspects in all four of Mahomes' playoff starts to this level.
"Of us contrivance I became as soon as loopy aid at the mix, before he took a launch, after I mentioned he is the perfect player I've ever considered," Veach crowed after Mahomes erased a 24-0 deficit in the blink of the impress, decimating Houston's defense with an perfect trying array of vast plays in the Chiefs' 51-31 Divisional Round victory. "He's the perfect player in the game. I focal level on that's no longer honest appropriate me announcing it now, it's your complete league."
ONE OF THE GREAT PERKS OF SPORTS FANDOM
Mahomes credit Smith for offering a quarterbacking blueprint which eased the transition in Kansas Metropolis. By the time Jimmy Garoppolo arrived in San Francisco, by difference, the 49ers were adrift, having lost the direction rapidly after Kaepernick blazed at some level of the sky as a uniquely gifted read-option revelation with a two-year expiration date.
Tumblr media
Garoppolo has been the rising tide lifting all Bay Dwelling boats, rescuing a 1-10 operation by main the NFL in scoring at some level of a 5-sport profitable saunter to cease out the 2017 season. After struggling during the lean years of Kaepernick's give plot and Blaine Gabbert's blooper reel, 49ers followers could possibly skills one of many worthy perks of sports actions fandom: the never-ending chances presented by a younger, franchise-altering skills reputedly despatched from the heavens.
After lacking the vast majority of a lost 2018 marketing campaign with an ACL damage, Garoppolo bounced aid in impressive fashion this year, turning into the perfect quarterback to enact the odd season ranked in the head 5 in completion rate (69.1), yards per strive (8.4) and touchdown passes (27). Belying his recency biased popularity as a properly-coifed Bob Griese, Garoppolo led a properly-balanced juggernaut which carried out eighth in Football Outsiders' passing effectivity metric and lost honest appropriate three video games -- all in the closing seconds.
Smith has been dogged by the pejorative sport-manager caveat at some level of his tumultuous 15-year occupation. Could possibly also merely restful the identical popularity befall an exhilarating younger passer with Garoppolo's gaudy occupation moderate of 29.1 aspects per sport?
Whereas that figure is in the aid of only his Sizable Bowl LIV opponent's 32.6 aspects per sport in NFL history, no quarterback since the 1970 merger has managed a greater occupation profitable percentage than Garoppolo's .821 (23-5). In a the same preference of starts since coach Kyle Shanahan assumed relief an eye fixed on in 2017, all diverse 49ers quarterbacks possess posted a diametrically adverse .167 (4-20) bewitch-loss figure.
How did Griese's backups magnificent in comparability? When he went down with a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle in Week 5 of the Dolphins' undefeated 1972 marketing campaign, the inimitable Earl Morrall stepped in without lacking a beat, capturing Sporting News AFC Player of the Yr and first-crew All-Decent honors whereas main the league in passer score.
Ever since legendary Bears head coach George Halas raised the quarterback to prominence with the T-formation offense in the 1940s, the contrivance has been measured by success on third down, in the red zone and at the stop of cease video games. As Shanahan explained to the assembled media in Miami earlier this week, NFL teams can't hump the ball in the occasion that they construct no longer possess a quarterback in a position to changing daunting third downs and main fourth-quarter comebacks.
"Jimmy has been as proper as somebody to me on third down this year," Shanahan testified. "When now we possess wanted him to bring us aid at the stop of video games, he's carried out it. I've by no plot been a part of a sport the build a QB completes two third-and-16s on a final drive to beat the Rams cherish he did. What he did in that first Arizona sport, I focal level on it became as soon as a Third-and-16 also, to score us aid in the final drive. The 2nd Arizona sport, throwing to score aid in that sport."
THE NFL'S COMPETITION CURVE
Quarterback is the most scrutinized contrivance in the American sports actions landscape. Basic for his portrayal of Moses in the 1956 classic The Ten Commandments, actor Charlton Heston as soon as remarked, via Paul Zimmerman's The Sleek Taking into consideration Man's Manual to Decent Football, that it's more straightforward to part the Crimson Sea than to play quarterback in the NFL.
The highest years of Smith's occupation started in 2011 with Jim Harbaugh's rebuilding San Francisco 49ers and lasted through 2017 as Reid reconstituted the Chiefs. All the plot through that time span, there weren't better than 15-20 human beings on this planet in a position to taking part in the contrivance at a greater diploma.
Nonetheless what happens when a firm outgrows a capable starting up quarterback, leaving him in the aid of cherish Christopher Robin forsaking Winnie the Pooh?
A godsend to a crew on the low stop of the rivals spectrum could possibly be deadweight to a extra gifted club harboring realistic Sizable Bowl targets. I take a look at out the phases of this present day's NFL rivals curve as follows:
1) Enlargement crew 2) Natural tanking 3) Rebuilding 4) Treading water with increasing old nucleus 5) Loading up for playoff push 6) Division well-liked 7) Sizable Bowl contender 8) Perennial playoff bye expectation
All too on the total, teams are unwilling to face grim actuality, bottoming out before the failed discipline total is modified. Six years after the Round The NFL Podcast established "the Dalton Scale" to illustrate football's netherworld of QB purgatory, the Bengals could possibly at final flip the offense over to a phenom honest like LSU's Joe Burrow. When the in every other case-loaded 2017 Jaguars reached the AFC Championship Sport by sport-planning round their quarterback's glaring barriers, they opted to double down, handing Blake Bortles a contract extension.
Whereas the Bengals and Jaguars denied their quarterbacks' flaws in terms of their rosters' clout, the 2012 49ers and 2018 Chiefs accredited the actuality that they'd outgrown a minute signal-caller greater suited to a Allotment 4 or 5 outfit. Recognizing that an offense could possibly study to bound with Smith, launch to hump with Kaepernick and sprout wings with Garoppolo or Mahomes, San Francisco and Kansas Metropolis made daring choices commensurate with their ingenious teaching staffs and gifted cores.
Sizable quarterbacks construct no longer honest appropriate rework teams. They enhance the lives of these round them.
As Raiders coach Jon Gruden as soon as notorious, Brett Favre became as soon as accountable for a quantity of carried out basements, transformed garages, fresh swimming pools and marriage ceremony funds among Packers assistant coaches. Sooner than Peyton Manning rescued the Colts from irrelevance, David Letterman quipped, Indianapolis became as soon as a diminutive metropolis. The local crew's quarterback ended up changing the skyline of the metropolis!
After drafting Deshaun Watson in 2017, Houston coach Bill O'Brien conceded that a reliable franchise quarterback's heed can no longer be quantified. "It is so crucial," O'Brien explained. "That contrivance on any crew carries the targets, the hopes of the group."
When O'Brien's Texans surrendered their 24-0 result in Mahomes' blitzkrieg offense in the Divisional Round, a high-score Chiefs offer texted TheMMQB's Albert Breer: "Unbelievable. The QB is from one other planet."
The final time the Chiefs were in the Sizable Bowl, they were led by a quarterback who fired up lung darts at halftime, O.J. Simpson became as soon as the No. 1 soak up the NFL draft, Kyle Shanahan wasn't born but and The Archies' bubble-gum pop hit "Sugar, Sugar" became as soon as Billboard's high single of the year.
Now that Andy Reid has his holy grail under heart, famous football creator and lifelong Chiefs fan Michael MacCambridge believes the ghosts of playoff screw ups previous had been "exorcised" at final in Kansas Metropolis.
"And that starts with 15," MacCambridge currently relayed to NBCSports.com's Peter King. "He's no longer haunted. And that's the reason why the Chiefs are going to the Sizable Bowl."
You construct no longer manufacture history throwing trying the sticks.

Phillies Betting Preview: Improving (Yes, Improving) Vince Velasquez Looking to Secure Series Win
The Phillies used seven shutout innings from Drew Smyly, a key hit from Adam Haseley, and a two-run bomb from Rhys Hoskins to take the opener against the surging Giants last night in what was both teams’ final game ahead of this afternoon’s 4 p.m. trade deadline.
Will the Phillies add? Will the Giants unload franchise icon Madison Bumgarner? Will the emotional boosts/letdowns from these potential deals play into how either team comes out tonight? Possibly. Just a contextual factor to consider being locking in a wager.
Anyway, remember last weekend when Gabe Kapler caught some shit because he said Smyly looks like Cliff Lee on the mound? Well, through two starts, he’s pitching like him:
Lee first two starts with Phillies in ’09: 16 IP, 10 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 15 K
Smyly first two starts with Phillies in ’19: 13 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 13 K
Just sayin’.
Anyway, the Phillies will look to make it three in a row and secure a series win tonight when Vince Velasquez takes the ball against San Francisco’s Jeff Samardzija. The Phils also have a chance to reach seven games over .500 for the first time since June 16. Will they do it?

Phillies-Giants Pitching Matchup
Vince Velasquez
Velasquez was touched up two starts ago when he allowed four homers and failed to finish five full innings against the Dodgers, but he showed plus-stuff early on in that game and finished the night with seven strikeouts. He just couldn’t keep the ball in the yard, as four of the five hits he surrendered came via the home run. He rectified those issues in his start at Detroit last Wednesday in which he tossed 5.2 scoreless innings. It appeared he would complete six full innings for only the second time in 12 starts, but he fell one out short.
Despite still failing to get consistently deep into games, Velasquez has actually posted pretty solid numbers over his last five starts: 4.01 ERA, 1.094 WHIP, 30 K, 5 BB.
Other than L.A., the competition hasn’t been too fierce, but in three July starts, Velasquez has a 3.52 ERA, while opponents are hitting only .246 against him with a .292 OBP, but they have also posted a .525 slugging percentage. In seven games at Citizens Bank Park this season, Velasquez has a 4.15 ERA, but opposing batters are hitting only .226 against him with a modest .270 on-base percentage, while also putting up a 5/1 strikeout to walk ratio.
Overall, the Phillies are 6-6 (+$16) in Velasquez’s 12 starts this season. They are 4-3 when he starts as a favorite and 1-2 when he starts as a home favorite.
Note: Brandon Belt is 0 for 5 with a strikeout against Velasquez.
Jeff Samardzija
Samardzija (7-8, 3.95 ERA) has been solid this season, and he’s 3-1 with a 2.95 ERA this month. In 11 road starts, he’s 5-3 with a 4.19 ERA and 1.19 WHIP.
In five career games at Citizens Bank Park, he has struggled immensely. Opponents are hitting .320 with a .620 slugging-percentage and a 1.002 OPS. That probably explains his 0-3 record and 13.91 ERA. That is, by far, his worst ERA in any visiting park in which he’s made at least five appearances. Same goes for his 1.91 WHIP, 1.002 opponent OPS, .320 opponent batting average, and .620 opponent slugging-percentage.
Overall, the Giants are 11-10 (+$350) when he starts. They are 7-4 (+$545) in his road starts and 6-4 (+$451) when he starts as a road dog. That’s quite an impressive return.
Note: Bryce Harper is only 3 for 18 lifetime against Samardzija.
Phillies-Giants Betting Trends
The Giants are only 54-53 this season, but have been a terrific bet because they often play as an underdog. At +$1,333, they are MLB’s second-most profitable team behind only the Twins. At 29-25 on the road, their +$1,419 return makes them baseball’s most profitable road team. Their 24-22 record (+$1,288) makes them the game’s most profitable road underdog, too.
Simply put, the Giants have been an outstanding bet both on the road and as an underdog.
San Francisco has also been excellent against teams allowing more than 4.2 runs per game this season, as the Phillies are, with a 43-33 record (+$1,675).
As for the Phillies, they also have some encouraging trends working in their favor ahead of this one. They have a solid 32-23 record at home this season, though that has actually lost the average $100 bettor a total of $7. Overall, however, they’ve been a very profitable favorite at 43-22 (+$740) and 30-15 (+$513) as a home favorite.
This current money line is encouraging for Phillies backers, too.
They’re 10-4 (+$336) overall and 6-2 (+$244) at home this season when a moneyline favorite between -128 and -140. When we open that range from -117 to -147, they are 19-10 (+$461). Bottom line: Philadelphia has been a good play with this moneyline range at Citizens Bank Park.
Phillies-Giants Prediction
The Phillies had a disappointing weekend against the Braves, but they’ve actually played pretty well in the second half. San Francisco has been outstanding in July, and they’ve been straight cash both on the road and as an underdog, which gives me some pause – particularly given Samardzija has been so good this month. Still, Velasquez has been sneaky effective lately and the Giants lineup shouldn’t strike too much fear into anybody. Throw in Samardzija’s career struggles at Citizens Bank Park, and I think the Phillies claim a series victory tonight.

New Post has been published on https://toldnews.com/business/the-rise-of-presenteeism-in-the-workplace/
The rise of 'presenteeism' in the workplace
Image caption Dale Garbacki works for Dixons Carphone
How many times have you gone in to work when you’re really not up to it?
It’s called presenteeism and it’s on the rise.
A study by health insurer Vitality has found that more than 40% of employees said their work was being affected by health problems – a figure that’s risen by a third over the last five years.
It found that people are putting aside both mental and physical health problems to attend work.
And in its recent annual Health and Well-Being at Work Survey Report the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) also found evidence of unhealthy trends in the workplace.
The CIPD said more than four-fifths (83%) of its respondents had observed presenteeism in their organisation, and a quarter (25%) said the problem had got worse since the previous year.
Depression
Sarah Mitchell-Hume didn’t know anything about mental health when she had a panic attack at her desk.
She was two years into her career in engineering recruitment, a job she absolutely loved, when she suddenly became unwell. Sarah was diagnosed with depression.
“I felt pressurised to go back to work, even though I was signed off sick,” she recalls.
“I was physically present but mentally I wasn’t doing anything. And I’d just zone out, there was nothing going on behind my eyes. I think I just cleared my inbox every day. It made me more ill. I should’ve been at home recovering.”
Image caption Sarah Mitchell-Hume kept working despite being signed off sick
Aged 24, she was just starting her career when she felt like it had come to an end.
If you break a leg, it’s clear you need time off. Having a mental illness or suffering from workplace stress can be harder to spot. But Vitality’s research has shown that these are the biggest factors behind the growing problem of people turning up for work when they’re not fit enough to do their jobs.
Accelerating trend
Vitality runs an annual survey, Britain’s Healthiest Workplace, involving 167 organisations and 32,000 staff. The aim is to understand and tackle poor health and wellbeing across the UK workforce.
Presenteeism is a clear and accelerating trend. It’s just one of a number of studies which have come to the same conclusion.
It’s obvious that if we’re not at our best, then we’re less productive employees.
When Dale Garbacki lost his wife in 2014, he hit rock bottom. He was her main carer as well as trying to hold down a full time job in technical support for Dixons Carphone.
“Productivity dropped to what I call bare minimums,” he now admits.
“I’d had several warnings. By finally reaching out to the company and having a private chat with one of my managers, about how I was feeling and what I was going through at home, the loss of my wife, he said ‘ah, why didn’t you tell me sooner. We’ll need to get you some help’.”
Whilst Ms Mitchell-Hume felt she had no support in her workplace and ultimately left her job, Mr Garbacki started a work sponsored fitness programme to help him turn things around.
He runs before work in his local park in Preston as well as working out in the company gym.
“I’m definitely a lot better than I was. Overall I feel better in myself. I have more positive and confident feelings and I actually look forward to each day.”
He has now earned his first ever full bonus.
‘Good business sense’
His employer has been on a journey, too.
Dixons Carphone’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Kesah Trowell, had her work cut out trying to persuade her company to sponsor one of the UK’s biggest long distance treks or runs, the Race to the Stones.
It proved a huge success with its workers who took part, kick starting a raft of other wellbeing initiatives including Mr Garbacki’s bootcamp programme.
Image caption Kesah Trowell says wellbeing initiatives make business sense
“It really does make good business sense,” says Ms Trowell.
“It’s important that we have happy, healthy and an engaged workforce, particularly since we’re in a retail environment. “
She adds: “Technology makes it easy for people to hide behind their desks, their computers or their phones. It’s easier for more presenteeism than their would’ve been a few years ago. That’s why it’s important for us to manage this.”
Productivity puzzle
Could reducing presenteeism help solve the UK’s chronic productivity puzzle?
“Absolutely,” says Vitality’s chief executive Neville Koopwitz.
Productivity is the main driver of long-term economic growth and living standards. But our workers aren’t anything like as efficient as they should be.
“Workplace stress and mental wellbeing has a massive impact. We believe presenteeism is the key issue to Britain’s productivity problem, where people are at work and not performing in an optimal way,” Mr Koopwitz says.
Ms Mitchell-Hume does freelance and voluntary work now as well as being a busy mother. She’s happy but she just wishes her employer had handled things differently.
“It was so incredibly difficult. A bit of compassion, empathy and flexibility would’ve made all the difference,” she says.
“The workplace can be a tough place to be. There’s so much more to be done to look after employees.”

[Principle] Impression of the voice "don't care not only ears but also head to love the person who was bullying me!"
The protagonist, who repeated the devil's work such as breaking obstacles, breaking hearing aids, throwing away writing notes, fell in love with the girl who was bullying, and as a result, he became confused, so from the synopsis It's full of a sense of luck.
In other words, it's stupid like "did it a long time ago, but liked it. Please forgive me." "didn't like it at that time, but now happy... hug!" Because the exchange between men and women is shown.
An episode in which "this man is actually badly bullied, he is a lonely and poor man" because he forced a love relationship that two ordinary people could not understand into a natural flow. Also stupid.
It's not just her ears, but her head who cares about the guys who are bullying herself, even though she's doing it at her fingertips! can only think that.
How impressed are you with all this?

Sports world unites against coronavirus pandemic
#PHnews: Sports world unites against coronavirus pandemic
ANKARA – The global sports community is playing an active part in efforts to overcome the coronavirus pandemic, with top teams and athletes trying to use their influence to convince fans to follow recommended guidelines.
Many sports clubs and athletes are participating in social media campaigns such as "StayHome" and "StayAtHome", sharing messages and videos of their daily workouts that are garnering millions of views.
Among the clubs are European football powerhouses Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Juventus, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich, all of whom released videos or statements encouraging people to abide by self-isolation and quarantine rules.
In a letter released last week, Real Madrid Chairman Florentino Perez said the Spanish club has taken all measures to do its part in slowing the spread of coronavirus.
"Now is also the time to especially emphasize the value of solidarity, strictly following the indications of the authorities and, above all, remaining at home," he said.
Spain’s other footballing giant, Barcelona, posted a message of resilience on Twitter and urged fans to remain indoors.
“Covid19 … We are More than a Club [Barcelona club's motto] and we will emerge from this even stronger. Take care, culers [term for Barcelona fans], and #StayAtHome,” read the post.
French champions PSG urged fans to do their part for the world. “If you ever dreamed of playing for millions around the world, now is your chance. Play inside, play for the world,” read the message.
Italian club Juventus shared videos of several players doing their workouts and trainings at home. “Whether it's working out at home, kick-ups with a dog or toilet paper, cooking and singing, our Bianconeri [Juventus players] are NOT slowing down!” read the club’s Twitter post.
England’s top team this season, Liverpool, urged fans to wash their hands regularly to stay clear of the virus.
“Stay safe and keep washing those hands, Reds! It doesn't take long...” the club said in several tweets with accompanying videos.
On Sunday, German club Bayern Munich started the “#StayAtHomeChallenge” in which several Bayern players juggled toilet paper rolls with their feet.
German defender Jerome Boateng, Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez, and Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho challenged their teammates and players from other clubs.
The trend has caught on and many football stars have posted videos of their attempts on social media in recent days.
Barcelona's Argentine superstar Lionel Messi took on and, as expected, aced the challenge. He shared his video on Instagram and managed to juggle a roll of toilet paper 20 times in a row.
Real Madrid’s German star Toni Kroos posted a video on social media of him doing dribble drills at home to stay fit during the self-isolation period.
Another athlete from Germany, tennis player Andrea Petkovic, put up a video of her home exercise routine and challenged 2014 Australian Open men’s title winner Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.
Turkish basketball club Fenerbahce Beko's Italian forward Luigi Datome published a video in Italian and Turkish to raise public awareness.
“The only way to stop the spread of the virus is to stay at home. I know the weather is fine but we have to care for our health. Please stay at home as much as you can. Wash your hands and avoid crowded places,” he said.
Datome said he does not want Turkey to suffer like Italy, which now has the highest Covid-19 death toll and the second highest number of cases in the world.
The coronavirus pandemic has completely disrupted the 2020 sporting calendar, with almost every local and international league and competition in every sport either called off or postponed.
Among them are the NBA season and Turkish Airlines EuroLeague in basketball, several tennis tournaments including the French Open, which is one of the four Grand Slam events, and top football competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and EURO 2020.
The CovidD-19 outbreak that was first detected in Wuhan, China, has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Data compiled by the US-based Johns Hopkins University shows the virus has now spread to 167 countries and regions.
Over 350,500 cases and 15,300 deaths have been reported worldwide since last December, while more than 100,150 people have recovered. (Anadolu)

Why time is a flat circle for the New York Knicks
Year after year the Knicks release a new album, but they’re just full of the greatest hits.
“The more things change, the more they stay the same.”
Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr, a French critic and writer, said that in 1848, probably in reference to something French and philosophical. He also probably said it in reference to the 2019 New York Knicks.
The dawn of each new season brims with glimmers of hope for the hapless franchise, ushering in a fresh batch of coaches, players and inapt answers. Some even get sprinkled with team savior fairy dust and lull the New York faithful into chimeric delusions of glory. Just as quickly, those potential heroes get chased out of town. And therein lies the problem.
The Knicks, almost impressively, hit rock bottom then tumble to vaster depths. Just 22 games into his second season, they fired head coach David Fizdale. To borrow another relevant Francophile idiom, they’re what the French call, “les incompétents.”
The team perpetuates a false dichotomy of chasing the Next Big Thing (and failing), then signing the Next-Best Things to short-term deals in order to maintain cap flexibility. Obviously, planning ahead and fiscal prudence are tantamount to success, but this forward-looking fallacy undermines their present and keeps the maelstrom of terribleness swirling.
Back in May, before the draft bore the fruits of R.J. Barrett and Ignas Brazdeikis and the storm of free agency marshaled the power forward cabal, I met Walt Frazier. (At this moment in time, the lottery granted New York the third pick while Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving teaming up with them was a “done deal.”) I asked if he’d rather see the Knicks develop their young talent or sign marquee free agents.
“I think develop the younger players. Too many times we sold the farm trying to get guys that never lived up to their expectations,” Frazier said. “We’ve seen that the fans are loyal. The Knicks have been terrible for the last five, 10 years. Fans still come every night, they sell out. So the fans are going to be patient. I think the best way to improve the team is through the draft and not trying to do it instantaneously with free agents.”
While there’s no singular correct way to flourish in the NBA, consistency is the best starting point. It provides a base of stability, aids development and allows chemistry to build. Teams steadier in their plans and personnel unsurprisingly do better over time.
Kristaps Porzingis, former white knight and false franchise savior, reached his breaking point after three seasons in New York and asked out. If we’re being honest, it’s hard to totally blame him. His trade to Dallas last year came seemingly out of nowhere and materialized in what felt like a dizzying series of seconds. Porzingis’ recent comments nailed the Knicks’ overarching issue.
Durant (after signing with cross-borough rival Brooklyn Nets) hit on another, saying no one wants to come to the Knicks because they’re not cool.
Until New York changes the chaotic environment it festers in, they need to give up the mirage of being a top free-agent destination. It’s counter-intuitive, but they should treat themselves as a small market team, putting the emphasis on culture instead of possibility. There’s no deus ex machina at the end of the movie. This lifeboat’s adrift at sea and their only choice is to survive together.
The Knicks’ atrocious start this season puts them behind last year’s 17-win pace. You’ll be shocked to know a straight line can be drawn from a .167 winning percentage to an ill-fitting roster turned over 62 percent from the season prior. They only stand above the Warriors in continuity — a team gutted by injury and basically forced to roll out an entirely new lineup.
As awful as it’s been, the inverse would be truly magnificent. The players who eventually bring a banner to the Madison Square Garden rafters will be living legends. Frazier is one of those legends. He fully understands how precious winning is and the delicate balance in which each title hangs. He sighed nostalgically about how another championship could have come their way with better health luck during their heyday. He spoke about the team’s past grandeur and how he wears both championship rings every day with tremendous pride. He then offered up this gem:
“I don’t know if you remember the “Willis Reed Game” where he came out and inspired the team… I tell everybody that was bullshit. I had 36 points, 19 assists, seven rebounds, four steals, I sold hot dogs at halftime…And they gave him the MVP award! But if Willis didn’t do what he did, I would not have had that game,” Frazier said. “People thought it was premeditated that when Willis came on the court, we knew about it. We left the locker room and had no idea if Willis would play. So we were just as flabbergasted as the audience. And then he makes the first two shots and those shots set the tempo of the game. The Lakers got psyched out. I saw Wilt Chamberlain, I saw Elgin Baylor, I saw Jerry West, three of the greatest players to ever play the game, lose their cool. And the Knick crowd became so vociferous, they kept yelling and screaming, I just thought I could do anything in that game.”
A return to greatness would require emulating the most successful franchises in sports. Inserting a revolving door at the coaching ranks and constantly churning the roster creates an apathetic, transient team, devoid of chemistry. Just like any workplace with high turnover, it couples with low morale and poor results.
Additional turnover among the scrutiny is inevitable. Some of the veterans will surely be traded to contenders in the coming months. In that wake, the remaining group needs to band together and embrace the current scrutiny. Hopefully, it’ll be this group that builds a base of competency.
Barrett shows the makings of a centerpiece. Mitchell Robinson destroys worlds. Frank Ntilikina, the most beautiful boy, finally unlocked his offensive viability to pair with being a lockdown defender. And so far this season, Kevin Knox has improved every aspect of his game.
The Garden’s soil ran barren for so long, it’s been impossible for winning to take root and grab ahold of the fans growing more numb and indifferent by the day.
They definitely need change. But change for the Knicks will come by staying the same.

Argh! Insurance rates went up?
So my friend and I were out driving his car and when he got out at a store, I hopped in the driver's seat. I have a class 5 license, so it's all legal there. We weren't speeding or doing anything illegal, we had nothing to hide, so everything was legit. However, pulling out of a four-way, an officer pulled us over because our tail lights were busted. Of course, I had no idea and basically the officer just issued a warning to my friend (he's the owner of the car, so he did most of the talking). However, the officer did take my license and took a while with it; in this time I had no idea what he was doing. There was nothing but politeness and courtesy exchanged in the end we just drove straight to the party we were headed to. At the party though, there was some guy who put his hand out to shake mine for Insurance rates going up . This guy's on an ego-trip so I had no care about what he had to say at all but now I'm kind of worried. Question: Did my insurance rates go up for driving without tail lights? I understand that, as driver, I'm fully responsible of the vehicle, but the owner was with me and so he doesn't have to be the one that gets tagged with the record for this??? I live in Canada and the officer didn't inform me of anything like this. Help, please and thank you.""

Are hearing aids covered by health insurance?
Since I was born, I've had a hearing problem on my left ear that I have to go to the audiologist for every year, and every year they say my ability to hear in it goes down by a fragment. I'm 16 now, and in high school, and they originally tried to get me to get hearing aids in 6th grade, but I threw a fit because I was afraid people would make fun of me, and they haven't brought it up since. This year I'm really noticing that my hearing is shot. I'm constantly asking people to repeat things, and whenever someone says something to me and I'm not looking at their mouth, it's all a jumbled mess. If there are a lot of people talking, and someone is standing directly in front of me, but I'm not looking at their mouth, I miss probably a fifth of what they say. I've been thinking about getting hearing aids, but I was wondered if they were covered by insurance. My mom gets the insurance through Fl Hospital, if that helps, and as I'm just now looking into it, I don't know many more details about it.""

I'm 24, and I've been reading a lot of posts online about people who have many health ailments and do not have insurance to get treated or go to the ER then have a massive bill afterwards. I don't understand why these individuals are not hunting around for the cheapest medical insurance they can find prior. There are individual plans out there, directly through the insurance companies, also family plans. You can pick and choose your premiums/deductibles/co-pays, hunt around for what suits your needs best. The single plans especially, can be and most of the time are, affordable. I don't understand why people do not apply for basic health insurance that would cover them in an emergency, or for general routine health-care. Premiums can be as low as 60-100 a month for a single person. Please can someone explain to me why these people are not taking advantage of what is out there? Or even possibly applying for the government assistance plans if they're not employed, especially after an ER visit with no insurance? This is an honest question. Thanks""

What companies are still insuring unoccupied and or second homes?
This seems to be a new trend. It seems that insurance companies are canceling Homeowner's policies of their customers who are selling their homes! Once the client has to move out to their new home the insurance company cancels the policy on the home that's still for sale. This is being done even if the customer has been a client for over 30 years and is using that company for the new home! Sellers are having a rough enough time with the real estate market these days! What can be done about this? Also suppose the seller decides not to sell but keep the home as a vacation spot? Are second homes being uninsured also?
How does car insurance work in Canada...?
Your rate start at +43%, NOT 0, correct? People under the age of 25 are more expensive because (because they're group has a higher statistic of accidents and yadda yadda...) they are a new driver and they are starting at +43%, correct? But are NEW drivers OVER the age of 25 still starting at +43%? Or the day you turn 25, you go from +43% to 0%... because that doesn't seem likely, but that is how the majority of people explain new driver's insurance. Also what is the average yearly deduction rate? I would assume around 2% on average? ***The +43% is based on ICBC's website (They said that is what ever driver starts at) ***It is +43% of whatever insurance you chose for your age, etc, and then 43% ADDED on, correct? Sorry for the ignorance of this question, but I don't live with my parents and am finally looking into car insurance. Besides, there are no bad questions, right? LOL. Have a good one and thank you!""

Can I get insurance myself at 17?
I'm 16 right now and I have been diagnosed with major depressive. My mom lost her insurance in May last year and I haven't been to a doctor since. My symptoms are getting worse and I attempted suicide a couple months ago (refused to see a doctor afterwards because I didn't want social services to get involved). I have a family history with depression and mood disorders and my condition is only getting worse. I tried to get insurance all summer and fall last year, but I couldn't qualify for medi cal (I live in california) because of my age supposedly and my old doctor refused to sign off on minors consent. I'm wondering if things will be different by the time I turn 17? Will I be more likely to be accepted by then? Is there anything else I can do that won't get my mom arrested and me put into the foster care system? I feel like the social workers have a gun pointed to my back right now.. if I say much more about my problems to them they'll take me, and my little brother. Also CPS is not an option I want nothing to do with them or foster care. I would rather continue on and die in my condition than go to the foster home in my area, I've met kids stuck in that system and continuing on without medical care seems better than living in that hell hole. And I certainly wouldn't wish that on my little brother.""
How does AD&D Insurance differ from Life Insurance?

If I have Life and Medical Insurance, am a white collar worker, and do not engage in dangerous hobbies, why would I need it? By the same token, why not get AD&D instead of Life insurance (since the AD&D plan I looked at had a death benefit)? AD&D seems like a waste of money (of course I've just jinxed myself). Ramblings: Draft Analysis, Weekend Trades and Signings
Draft Analysis, Weekend Trades and Signings
First off, I just wanted to give a shoutout to Peter Harling, Cam Robinson, and the rest of the Dobber Prospects team for some amazing work at the draft (and for Cam for actually dropping a Ramblings to boot – these things don’t take five minutes to write, you know). It was awesome seeing the Dobber brand showing up on the Sportsnet ticker as each big name fell off the board.
As significant as the Dobber presence has been in Dallas, next year might be even better, with the 2019 draft coming to Vancouver! Will Quinn Hughes receive the honor of announcing his brother Jack as the first overall pick and his new teammate? Wait just a minute Canucks fans… you seem to have forgotten about the crummy luck that you have in the draft lottery every year.
By the way, I’m ecstatic about the Hughes pick. I can say that a puck-moving defenseman is something that the Canucks have been missing since, well, ever. I think the one takeaway from this draft – at least the first round – is the type of defensemen that were drafted. After years of teams drafting bigger and bigger, the smaller defensemen were all the rage as teams move toward a faster style that stresses the importance of moving the puck out of your zone and keeping up with the play. Here’s the height and weight of the first seven defensemen drafted in the first round:
Rasmus Dahlin (BUF): 6’ 2”, 181 lbs.
Quinn Hughes (VAN): 5’10”, 173 lbs.
Adam Boqvist (CHI): 5’11”, 165 lbs.
Evan Bouchard (EDM): 6’2”, 195 lbs.
Noah Dobson (NYI): 6’3”, 176 lbs.
Ty Smith (NJ): 5’11”, 176 lbs.
Ryan Merkley (SJ): 5’11”, 167 lbs.
Not one of these defensemen is over 200 pounds, and there are more that are under six feet tall than over. Of course, these are still kids who could continue to grow and should also fill out a bit more. But the trend of blueliners scoring more should continue, while fewer enormous-bodied stay-at-home defensemen will be able to survive in the NHL.
What made this draft fun is that after the first two picks, it didn’t seem to proceed according to plan. It’s easy to criticize Montreal and Arizona on their off-the-board picks, but the fact is that we’re putting faith in 18-year-old kids and perceptions will change. Let’s check back in ten years to find out how these picks really turned out. Maybe these Habs fans will become huge Kotkaniemi fans one day.

There’s certainly a lot to unpack from the past two days, so let’s get started.
*
I’ll start with a question that was asked to me this weekend. Some keeper leagues have an entry draft in which draft-eligible players can be drafted by teams. So if you have the third pick (or are simply ranking draft-eligible players), who would you choose? Assume Rasmus Dahlin and Andrei Svechnikov will be picked first and second overall. This person was initially thinking Filip Zadina, but with Jesper Kotkaniemi being picked third overall by the Habs, he wasn’t so sure anymore. Should the third overall pick in fantasy drafts be Zadina, Kotkaniemi, or someone else?
Settings and team needs could determine who you pick, but just because a certain NHL general manager decides to go off the board to pick the player he wants doesn’t mean that you also have to. And there’s a reason that the Kotkaniemi pick was considered off the board. Zadina obviously fell down at least a couple teams’ draft boards, but picking a real-life team is different from picking a fantasy team. Zadina says he will “bring the goals” to Detroit, something that he did in the QMJHL (44 goals in just 57 games). If you like fantasy goals on your team, he’s the guy I’d look to add at number 3.
For you (and for my own benefit, since I participate in one of these leagues), I will produce a draft list during the summer of draft-eligible prospects. But I’ve started with those three. Who would you pick after that? Or would you include someone else in your top 3? Remember that if you don’t want to wait and/or require far more detailed prospects analysis, you’ll want to pick up your copy of the Fantasy Prospects Report.

Dobber himself provided the Fantasy Take on the Ilya Kovalchuk signing, which includes how top-6 forwards in LA might be impacted. I’d expect Kovalchuk to be a decently productive fantasy option next season, but at age 35 he’s already seen most of his peers his age drop off from their prime (or drop out of the league by now). As productive as Kovalchuk was in the KHL (over a point per game over his last two seasons), I can’t help but think that someone like now-34-year-old Rick Nash is a comparable at this point in his career. And Nash isn’t someone you should be reaching for in next season’s drafts. But don’t get me wrong, I’d still rate Kovalchuk over Nash.
Another point I’ll add: After the Kovalchuk signing, the Kings are left with just over $3 million in cap space. They don’t have much work left to do (possibly extend a qualifying offer to Tobias Rieder), but barring any other moves to clear cap space, they probably won’t have enough room to bring back Slava Voynov. And they may not be planning to bring him back.
From The Athletic (this article is free):
Sources indicated that the Kings trading Voynov’s rights is likely the most plausible scenario.
This article, written by Katie Strang, describes both what would need to happen in order for Voynov to be reinstated, as well as the details of the events that led to his contract being terminated by the Kings. Although the 28-year-old Voynov could provide a team with an all-important right-shot defenseman who can deliver some offense, I don’t imagine that his acquisition will go over well with a significant portion of any team’s fanbase.
With Kovalchuk now off the board, John Carlson getting close to a deal in Washington, and John Tavares still considering re-signing on Long Island, could July 1 be kind of a “meh” day? Diehard hockey fans will no doubt tune in to the programming on TSN or Sportsnet (at least in Canada), but for the most part we’re not talking about franchise-altering players. Lots of over-30s who have had productive careers, though. You can check out the list over at Cap Friendly.
Speaking of Tavares, he is set to meet with five teams ahead of free agency. According to ESPN, those teams are expected to be San Jose, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Vegas, and Dallas. And according to David Pagnotta, the Islanders’ initial offer to Tavares is an eight-year deal worth $88 million.

Dobber also gave you the Fantasy Take on the Calgary/Carolina blockbuster. Fantasy-wise, this trade has a major impact on the Flames’ top line, with the forwards swapping places on it.
Bill Peters says Lindholm is penciled in on the top line w Gaudreau and Monahan already and will take draws on his strong side. Said he spoke to him but kept it short as Lindholm was attending Sweden’s World Cup game when the call came.
— Eric Francis (@EricFrancis) June 23, 2018
As far as the trade goes, I’m going to concentrate on the forwards in the deal.
I really like this move for Elias Lindholm – more so than anyone else involved in the deal. The previous relationship with Peters should result in Lindholm receiving at least a long look with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. There was no real continuity when it came to Lindholm’s linemates last season, but both Gaudreau (1.05 Pts/G) and Monahan (0.86 Pts/G) scored at a higher pace than any Carolina forward. This is a significant upgrade for Lindholm. If Micheal Ferland can score 21 goals while (mostly) playing on that line, then the more talented Lindholm should score at least that many. Lindholm has never scored more than 17 goals in a season.
Conversely, the main reason I decided to take a flier on Ferland last season was his place on the Flames’ top line. Of his 41 points last season, 35 were even strength. And of those 35 even-strength points, only three were without either Gaudreau or Monahan. There could be more turnover with the Canes’ forward group, particularly if Jeff Skinner is traded. But for now Ferland is buried among a large pile of wingers, which means that he should probably only be targeted in leagues that count hits.
*
One day after being traded to the Avalanche, Philipp Grubauer has signed a three-year contract worth $10 million total (Fantasy Take from Mike). I know one Semyon Varlamov owner that is livid right now, as he was counting on Varlamov again after bouncing back to fantasy respectability last season. Given that Varlamov has started 50+ games in four of the last five seasons even with an injury-prone reputation, I don’t think this turns out any worse than a 50/50 split for Varlamov. But it might be better to bet the under than he will play 50 games again in 2018-19.
This probably goes without saying, but the Grubauer trade all but assures that Jonathan Bernier will be headed to unrestricted free agency. The UFA goalie market is thin (you can check out that group at Cap Friendly), but Bernier should be considered a top-5 option in that group. That probably should net him a goalie timeshare situation of his own at best, with the more likely scenario of him being signed as a team’s backup.
As for the vacant Washington backup goalie job, recently signed goalie prospect Ilya Samsonov is expected to play a lot in the AHL next season. That would make Pheonix Copley the little-used backup behind Braden Holtby. The native of North Pole, Alaska (maybe he has met Santa Claus!) has played in just two NHL games – both with the Blues.

That Fat baby is my big sister; Lady with the legs is our mum. (I wasn’t alive when this picture was taken.)
I was always a “tender headed” child. That is, I cried when I got my hair combed.
I don’t remember when my mother[1. My mom is awesome and I love her to pieces and wouldn’t trade her for anything or anyone. She’s super nice and when the car dealer tried to screw me I called her to straighten them out– and she did. She’s wonderful and inspiring and shit at doing hair. She gets her’s done at a salon(not black) every weekend.] started relaxing my hair. I remember that it was probably, in part at least, my fault. At least once a week, getting my hair combed was the worst thing that could ever happen to me. It was exhausting for our whole family.
I’m the little one with “spiked bangs” (I liked to pretend it was a choice…)
My father would pace from one room to another like he really needed to visit the kitchen seven times in the 90 hours it took my mother to braid my hair so I looked like a little brown unicorn (three braids were the worst, but the woman only had so much patience).
“Maybe you could just let her rest for a bit?” my father suggested on the way back from pretending to need stuff in the kitchen again.
My hysterical sobbing ebbed a bit as I baited my breath hoping my mother (or some compassionate ghost that had recently taken her over) would shrug and let me run off to lick my wounds. And then maybe she’d forget and it would be over!? Muhahaha!
Sike! If looks could kill… My dad was finished with his rubbernecking and attempted intervention and my sobbing picked up again[2. From the pictures, it seems like my Dad isn’t around or we’re not cool anymore (I feel like because of black people stereotypes I need to say this). My dad is still around and I love him to pieces and take him to see sci-fi movies when I miss him and he and my mother are still happily married, living in the suburbs.].
One day this ritual ended and we moved on to boxes of relaxer.
I wasn’t happier but at least in-between treatments I could comb my own hair. Small victories, FTW!
The kit, like similar hair dye kits, came with chemicals that are to be kept separated until there is science to do. It also came with gloves and all the instructions in the world in tiny fine print. I don’t think my mother ever really read the instructions. Instead she, like many people, read the pictures.
Mix the stuff, base the scalp with Vaseline, part the hair, work quickly, rinse thoroughly.
Inevitably, some of these steps were skipped intentionally or accidentally. My mother kept her nails long so the whole basing the scalp thing was always a fight.
“It’s going to burn me.”
“Not if we do it fast. Sit.”
“You get gloves; I should get some protection too.”
After years of chemical burns and back and forth, I started basing my own damned scalp. And I was so thorough. I did my ears and baby hairs and the back of my neck. In all, each time I used about half a container of Vaseline. I wasn’t fucking with these burns anymore.
Eventually, I started going to the hairdresser to get my hair relaxed and DID.
I’m pretty sure this little number took a year. I asked for cornrows and the hairdresser was too lazy to do them and chose to do twists instead.
People who aren’t Black Women might not know this but Black hair salons are the worst version of a business ever. There’s that joke about CPT (Colored People Time)… It’s not funny when going to get your hair done is a six-hour affair. I’m not even kind of exaggerating.
Six hours. And it’s not because of elaborate styling or super delicate processes that require careful time management. No, it’s because of Fuck you, pay me.
There’s genuinely no good reason EVERY black hair salon I’ve ever been to has been a vicious time suck. It just is what it is.
Maybe the women doing hair needed to stop doing hair (all of the women at this salon) mid-way through processes and order then eat some food (true story). Maybe they misjudged how long it would take to do the client(s) before me and are now running behind by 2 hours (true story). Maybe the stylist is on the phone with her ex and has been for ages and will get you me when she gets to me (true story).
From the rundown nature of every black salon I’ve been to—I don’t WANT to be sitting in a broken chair reading VIBE from 3 years ago in a rented space in a project building (true story)— to the rundown nature of too many stylists I’ve encountered, I gave up on Black salons late in high school.
In high school, I decided to start relaxing my hair myself.
How hard could it be? If I was unsure, I just erred on the side of caution and might not have had bone straight roots. Whatever. After a while, I got more comfortable with blow dryer-free wash and go styling. I went longer and longer between touch-ups until I stopped doing them altogether.
Freshman year of college I grabbed my hair at the roots and felt where the unrelaxed, natural hair ended and the relaxed hair started—this was my line of demarcation.
I started cutting in the front and didn’t want to live with a mullet so kept cutting until it was all gone.
I didn’t look too bad with super short, natural hair. Sure, my makeup was always on point and I never went out without earrings but compensations aside, I looked good.
My mother saw me over winter break and disagreed. She grabbed my hair (Damn it, there was just enough for her to grab a fistful) and exclaimed, “What have you done!?”
“Mum, we’re in the middle of the food court and it’s gone so if you could just let it and my hair go…”
She sucked her teeth and I thanked God we were in public meeting my cousin’s small children for the first time. “Can I touch your hair!”
“Sure.”
“It’s soft!” (children are always shouting to me.)
My dad loved it. He’s 100% for natural hair. Maybe from the experiences of his youth or mine… Either way, he was for The Big Chop.
Years later, out of college and into the workforce I got lazy.
Natural hair is hard work. My hair is thick and my arms are weak.
I research different kinds of relaxers, though I’m not totally sure what I was looking for. Maybe the most gentle or the most effective or the least chemically.
I used a kid’s relaxer kit and based my scalp generously.
As an adult, I got pretty good at doing my own hair. I was quick and efficient and cared the most about my scalp and ear health. I only did the relaxer lightly to just weaken the curl, not kill it completely.
I could blow my hair out if I wanted or I could keep it looking a little natural. The best of both worlds.
One Saturday afternoon I’m in the bathroom happily parting the hair and applying cream when a cluster of hair swings from its group on top of my head right into my face. Not just my face but my wide open eye.
“FUCK!”
“What’s wrong with you?” my Chinese-Italian (Asian&White) fiancé shouts from the other room not quite sure if this is worth pausing his game for.
As I scramble to remove the gloves and get to the kitchen sink where I can safely rinse my eye, I ask him to read the paper that came in the relaxer kit to see if there’s anything else I need to do. Eye drops? Ointment? Counter agent?
“It says to wash your eye thoroughly with water.”
“Okay good. Thank you.”
My expectation was that he’d put the paper down, pat himself on the back and go back to his computer.
Nope.
As I’m getting in the shower he says, “You actually put this on your body?”
“No… Just my hair and just at the roots.”
“It says to put in on your hair but not your scalp. How do you put something on your hair but not your scalp?”
“Um, you’re careful? I mean if it gets on you scalp for too long you get chemical burns.”
“You just got it in your eye!”
“So you don’t think we should relax our kids’ hair?” I asked with a chuckle.
Genuine horror. “People put this shit  on children?”
Hm.
At the rehearsal dinner for our wedding, one of my aunts asked me what I was going to “do about my hair”
Initial visceral reactions and presumptuous defensiveness of blackness and MY choices quelled, I said, “Probably stick some flowers in it.”
And I did.

At my wedding with Unati and flowers in my hair!
Super Growth Hair Story! I was always a "tender headed" child. That is, I cried when I got my hair combed.
