This is a great joke, I love it. But Hamlet (and basically no one but Horatio) lives thru Act 5. It’s very important to me that you know that.
It’s a pretty significant thing that happens. They do very much kill Hamlet.

a little grey hair for every scare you share (komahinanami)
this is my contribution to @danganronpavalentines, for @akito666us! you asked for hajime, nagito and chiaki going ghost hunting, but i may or may not have included a reference to one of your other requests in this... happy valentine’s day!
(read on ao3)
___
Nagito wasn’t quite sure how the rumors about the cabin behind Hope’s Peak Academy started. He vaguely recalled some first years a few months ago saying they heard some weird noises coming from the abandoned building, but when it was brought up again this morning during homeroom, Mioda claimed she had also heard them. Soon enough, they were all arguing about whether ghosts inhabited the school grounds after midnight or not.
It didn’t seem like the argument was going to end anytime soon—Yukizome-sensei’s attempts were buried by Souda’s desperate screams for help, even though they were nowhere near the cabin—but then their dear class representative came to her rescue.
“I’ll do it.”
The class fell into silence, all gazes pinned on her.
“Y-You’ll do it?!” Mioda said.
Nanami gave her a warm smile. “Yep. I’ll check it out tonight. That way, we’ll know whether the rumors are true or not.”
“Well it’s not like I think ghosts are real or something,” Kuzuryu said, biting into his pencil. “But shouldn’t someone go with you?”
“Oh, oh, oh, that’s true!” said Owari. “It’d suck if our Class Rep was abducted by some sort of ghoul monster or something!”
Tsumiki yelped. “G-G-Ghoul monster?!”
Nanami shrugged, ignoring Saionji’s remark about needing everyone to get their story straight and how stupid Tsumiki was to fall for it. “I… I suppose I could ask—”
“I’d be glad to help!” Nagito interrupted, trying his best not to sound too excited. It wasn’t as if he didn’t already know who Nanami’s first option was.
“That’s okay. I was going to ask H—”
“You can still ask him,” Nagito said. And then, for good measure, he added, “I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend the evening with a couple of Ultimates? To be such close to hope itself… what could possibly top—”
“That’s an odd way of saying you wanna hang out with your friends…” Hanamura mumbled, and it took everything in Nagito not to glare at him.
But Nanami didn’t seem to mind. Instead, she gave Nagito a knowing smile, melting away his annoyance. “Okay.”
So yes. That’s kind of how Nagito found himself standing in front of a worn-out cabin in the dead of night with his two favorite people in the world. He wasn’t about to reveal the last part out loud though—especially not to them.
The wooden cabin was barely even visible under the moonlight; Nagito had to squint when they approached it. Apparently, it’d been used for storage when the school was first built, and no one bothered to clean it out when they moved everything to the basement in the actual building. Nagito couldn’t help but wonder if the teacher faculty themselves were afraid of the rumors too.
“I’m… not so sure this is a good idea.”
It wasn’t unlike Hinata to tag along Class 77th’s mischiefs. Nanami had started dragging him along to almost every class activity she put together—it was how Nagito had met him, after all—but he couldn’t help his excitement. There was something… different, about Hinata, something Nagito couldn’t quite place. It fascinated him beyond words, and so did Nanami’s ability to see it too.
“Can’t be worse than last year’s Hamlet,” Nanami said, barely looking up from her console.
Nagito remembered the tragedy that was last year’s Shakespeare tribute. Though he didn’t personally know any of the students that put on the play, the Ultimate Pianist had seemed to be the one to organize it—he felt kind of bad for her, considering how it ended.
“But you didn’t even watch it!” Hinata argued, pointing at Nanami’s game.
Nagito chuckled lightly. “Ah, you weren’t there for the… incident, were you, Hinata?”
Nanami grumbled under her breath.
In the play, a tall boy with messy, purple hair, who Nagito believed to be the Ultimate Astronaut, took on the role of Hamlet. He gave an outstanding performance until the final act, but his moment of glory didn’t last very long. Once Hamlet dropped dead on stage, the Ultimate Supreme Leader—who played Laertes—jumped on his feet, claiming the poisoned blade hadn’t actually stabbed him, and started jumping around, attacking Hamlet with every prop he could find.
One of them somehow bounced off the stage, directly on Nanami’s console, and broke it.
Had the curtains not closed, Nagito was almost convinced she would have thrown it back at the Ultimate Supreme Leader’s face. Regardless, Hinata hadn’t been there, and Nagito highly doubted it was something Nanami wanted to talk about, so unless someone else explained it to him, he couldn’t have possibly known.
Hinata shrugged. “Reserve Course students weren’t allowed to come, but Mitarai told me it was a disaster.”
“You could say that…” Nanami mumbled. Nagito couldn’t help but wonder why she was still upset about it. They’d all come together and bought her a new console two days later, and she surpassed all of her high scores anyway. Having a talent was truly fascinating.
“A-Anyway, why are we even talking about Hamlet?” Hinata said, and Nagito was quickly reminded of the play’s theme; ghosts. “Let’s just get this over with, it’s late enough already…”
Nagito grinned. “You didn’t strike me as the kind of person to be intimidated by ghosts, Hinata.”
“I’m not scared!”
“I didn’t say scared.”
“He didn’t say scared,” Nanami said at the same time as him. Hinata crossed his arms and buried his face in his scarf, but Nagito could still make out the faint blush on his cheeks. He didn’t think there was a single person in the world that could deny how adorable he looked like this.
“Either way, you’re right, Hinata,” Nagito said, in hopes to distract him. He took a step closer to the door of the cabin, pushing it open. He grinned. “Let’s go ghost hunting.”
As expected, no actual ghosts were waiting for them inside the cabin—what they did stumble upon was a seemingly abandoned bird’s nest in the corner of the ceiling. A swallow slipped inside the cabin from the broken window, and Hinata let out the highest pitched scream Nagito had ever heard as he pulled him and Nanami closer by their arms.
Well, Nagito thought as he leaned his head on Hinata’s, exchanging a quick smile with Nanami, this is just my luck.

What happened with Kora @princesshamlet: A start at contextualizing the events of the past week
While I am writing this because Kora expressed that they would like it if someone would post something contextualizing what happened, I do not speak for them; my opinions and perspective are my own. I think the general response has been wildly disproportionate to their actual words and actions. Let me know if you have questions about anything or if my writing style is hard to read and I’ll do my best to clarify.
Tl;dr: Last fall, Kora, a new Supernatural fan, started rewriting Supernatural to be more racially diverse and to more overtly address social issues such as homophobia and misogyny. They continually asked for feedback, particularly from POC, and received overwhelmingly positive responses.
Earlier this week, Kora posted something that unintentionally played into ideas that harm trans men. They were horrified to have hurt people, immediately apologized and made an effort to learn more about the issues involved.
Yesterday, some of Kora’s friends cut them off, presumably over the abovementioned. Some people read Kora’s Supernatural rewrite and were offended by portrayals of various ethnicities; Kora tried to learn from these criticisms and apologize for them. People organized to spread bad-faith, extremely hostile claims and Kora left Tumblr.
Background:
- last fall, Kora started watching Supernatural, and posting about it, including making some popular reaction videos and an elaborate summary of the events of season 16 as of mid-November. They got really attached to Cas as a character and DeanCas as a ship.
- Kora made a post along the lines of “what if I drew Castiel as Indian?” and got encouraging responses, so they made a drawing. A lot of Desi people left comments saying that they really liked the drawing and that the representation was meaningful to them, so Kora started posting and reblogging a lot more about recasting Supernatural to be racially diverse.
- Kora accumulates a lot of ideas around how they wish Supernatural had been, and starts casually writing it up into a story. It didn’t even have a title for the first few chapters, but it quickly amassed a small, enthusiastic following.
- I started reading it at first mostly as a way of getting to know Kora, who was at the time a new friend irl (they didn’t mean to give me their Tumblr; I had followed them for Hamlet and Star Trek posts and then recognized them when they posted a selfie) but wound up getting pretty invested. I started watching Supernatural despite the fact that I can pretty much never commit to finishing a TV show.
- Kora’s general strategy was to post ideas on Tumblr and get input before including them in the fic, particularly regarding race and ethnicity. Plenty of people gave them feedback -- I remember one really long conversation where people swapped headcanons about what music a Mexican-American Dean Winchester would have liked growing up.
- iirc, they actively collaborated with multiple Latine fans of the fic on one chapter that foregrounded Mexican-American culture. These fans are credited in an author’s note.
- they received substantial encouragement from Supernatural fans of color for how they were writing the fic, and afaik no negative feedback.
- they also used the fic as a way to discuss and joke about their personal experiences with misogyny, repression, and homophobia, including writing Dean Winchester as undergoing a character arc involving working through and overcoming severe homophobia. When we called recently, they described going from homophobic to not homophobic as “the best character arc a man can have.”
- afaik they had beta readers or at least people to run ideas by for most chapters.
First incident:
- earlier this week, Kora posted a somewhat poorly-worded vent post about Dean Winchester’s misogyny in Supernatural canon.
- I think I reblogged it because I don’t have super high standards for my SPN blog and yeah, afaict Dean said some pretty gross things in canon? I’d seen a lot of people talk about it, particularly Asian women, it’s clearly a thing.
- several people expressed hurt at the post’s wording, which could be read as bigoted against trans men.
- Kora immediately apologized and started looking for ways to learn more about trans men’s issues (afaict, mostly asking friends and going through the trans dean tag)
- they messaged me about it (Tuesday 4/13/2021), and I took a closer look at the post and explained how in isolation it looked harmless, but some of the rhetoric fit into wider patterns of transandrophobia, i.e. part of the impetus for this post was Kora being surprised that some of their trans male friends project onto Dean, since he’s a pretty bad role model for gender -- I pointed out that one way trans men are marginalized within queer movements is by people perpetuating the idea that we’re more misogynistic than cis men (which makes no sense), and their post could be read as playing into that trope (that reading had occurred to me when I first saw the post, but I had initially dismissed it because Kora and I had been spending a lot of time talking about gender and I never felt that they distrusted me or saw me as a threat).
- they made another hasty apology post, quoting my message to them.
- I encouraged them not to worry too much about what strangers online thought about them, but they were very insistent that they had hurt people and needed to learn and make amends.
- I think what happened next was that the conversation sparked a larger discussion about transandrophobia in the Supernatural fandom? I’m not sure about this though, I was off Tumblr most of Tuesday and Wednesday. I saw a few well-written posts refuting the idea that it was misogynistic to headcanon Dean as trans. I did not see anyone claim it was misogynistic to headcanon Dean as trans, but again, I wasn’t looking.
The Discourse™:
- yesterday, Kora started getting a lot more and a lot meaner messages.
- a large part of their social circle cut them off all at once, saying they felt unsafe and that Kora was transphobic. Kora did not/was unable to receive further clarification, while actively seeking the chance to learn more and repair harm done.
- someone made a dedicated hate tag for them.
- a new group of people read their Supernatural rewrite, and were offended by their portrayals of race and their writing about homophobia, and additionally mocking their writing style. The tone was often extremely mean-spirited.
- Kora responded to and apologized for some of the concerns around their portrayal of race, and refuted some of the bad-faith readings of their depictions of homophobia.
- Kora made an effort to understand what they had done wrong but a lot of the posts weren’t very specific.
- some of the claims got fucking wild. A lot of them involved taking stuff out of context. I think w*ncest got brought up at one point???
- Kora wrote another apology and took a break from Tumblr, on the advice of another friend.
- I spent like a day gearing up to write this because I vastly underestimated the speed at which Tumblr discourse moves.
#i know this would be a stronger post if I linked to posts addressing the issues in question#but I kinda just need to post Something at this point#supernatural#spn#princesshamlet discourse#discourse cw#ask to tag#tooth speech#lore

Bound by Destiny II, part 1 ― Chapter 1: The Nightmares
PAIRING: Kamilah Sayeed x MC (Nadya Al Jamil) RATING: Mature
⥼ MASTERLIST ⥽
⥼ Bound by Destiny II, part 1 ⥽
While struggling with nightmares of lives she’s never lived, a shadow from the past looming over her city, and the proposed idea that her life may just be a little bit too weird to handle alone, Nadya makes sure to tell herself that everything is perfect just the way it is. If only. When the self-proclaimed King of Vampires (and Maker of her sometimes-girlfriend and always-boss, can’t forget that little tidbit) Gaius Augustine returns intent on claiming Manhattan as the throne that was promised, she and her friends find themselves forced into the task of saving the world. But with millennia-old vampires and an Order of hunters on their heels as well as allies hiding catastrophic secrets at their backs… it won’t be an easy task. Too bad destiny didn’t exactly ask for her input.
Bound by Destiny II and the rest of the Oblivion Bound series is an ongoing dramatic retelling project of the Bloodbound series and spin-off, Nightbound. Find out more [HERE].
*Let me know if you would like to be added to the Destiny II tag list!
⥼ Chapter Summary ⥽
Nadya has a nice job, a gorgeous date-friend, and a calm Feral-free life. But terrifying nightmares keep her from truly enjoying all the things going for her, and the strain of it forces Nadya and her friends to reach a tipping point.
[READ IT ON AO3]
Except for the drawer in the fridge now explicitly labeled ‘BLOOD BAGS ONLY. LILY’S. DON’T TOUCH :)’ (the last part of which is a joke albeit not one Nadya finds very funny) it takes Nadya possibly far too long to realize her life hasn’t really changed all that much since her discovery of vampires.
Well… unless you wanted to count the time she was nearly killed by a bunch of rabid Ferals at a period-attire-required costume ball. Or the time her boss was wrongly convicted of plotting to kill a ton of people for some selfish gains (the details of which she’s still a little fuzzy, and by now asking would just make it uncomfortable). Or when she was one second away from being Evil Vampire Politician food only to be rescued by a Less Evil and Much Older Vampire.
But those weren’t out of the ordinary for someone hurled into this world headfirst and without the pizza that was promised.
Right?
Nadya still goes to work every night and comes home (almost) every day. Though lately with the hours they’ve been pulling she ends up investing in a comfy airplane pillow for quick half-naps at her desk when she can.
She still spends her weekends like a tv sitcom montage of varying positions on the couch while her room mate plays video games and occasionally hacks into bank servers on the side.
She still fumbles over her tongue tied up in a dozen knots every time she sees the gorgeous beauty that is her We’re-Not-Using-Labels-Yet, Kamilah. Though the fact that a 2,000 years-and-then-some vampire babe still finds Nadya’s utter lack of social skills charming in any possible way is a little suspicious.
Best not to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Everything is perfect just the way it is — was — continues to be — will be going forward. Nadya says some version of these facts to herself every day; sometimes out loud and sometimes in her head. Repeats them like a mantra as she goes about her daily routines before and after work. Everything is perfect just the way it is. Everything is perfect just the way it is.
She does this with the hope that one day she just might believe it’s true.
That one day she won’t wake up in the middle of the afternoon screaming her lungs out feeling them torn from her throat that’s still there; scrambling for all ten fingers and all ten toes because some weren’t there a second ago only she doesn’t quite remember how long ago she lost the big toe but it was definitely before the Crimean War; starving with a hunger she can’t describe but she’s sure her friends understand because that’s why Lily (jokingly) put the sticker on her blood drawer the way she did.
Everything is perfect just the way it is. Except when Nadya dreams a thousand lifetimes she’s never lived and so so many of them end with her drowning in innocent blood.
Never has she been more grateful for Lily’s long weekends with her girlfriend, Maricruz, down below the restless New York City streets in the Shadow Den.
Nadya takes long full swallows of tap water in between breaths. Her hand is shaking bad enough to spill but it’s just water and it’s just the bathroom sink and she’ll clean it up later. She should be lucky — just a few minutes ago she lost that hand in a duel against Catherine the Great.
It would have grown back, but still.
THUD. THUD. THU—UD.
Oh great.
“Will you dykes stop screamin’ bloody-freakin’-murder every single god damn day?!” Bellows the ever-delightful upstairs neighbor. Nadya never replies; not even when he storms his stomping feet all the way down the stairwell to pound on her door enraged and miserable.
Still — she only needs one hand to rip out a human’s tongue.
Nadya takes it back the moment she thinks it. Scrambles like she could catch every letter in the air before it floats off to wherever terrible thoughts like that go because they weren’t her thoughts please, please someone believe her.
When she’s showered the sweat from her body, wiped tears from her eyes and wrung the water from her hair Nadya decides, like the masochist she is, to try that sleeping thing again. It’s gonna be a long day at the office if she doesn’t.
And she’d like to think she wars with herself longer than she does — that her decision isn’t already made long before she rummages around in the dark of her blacked out room and plucks her glasses case out from underneath Kamilah’s treasured copy of Hamlet.
But there’s no one around. And these days Nadya can only be honest when she’s alone. Even if it’s only to herself.
She opens the fake leather and feels around for two small pills; spills a bit of water on her sheets because of the shaky hands thing when she knocks them back with the rest of the glass.
She hates it — hates herself for even having considered it in the first place and then some more for actually doing it. But how else is Nadya supposed to hope for some slim chance of mercy and dreamless sleep?
Nadya tries a bit of meditative breathing to pass the time while she waits for the sleeping pills to kick in. Decides maybe now would be a good time to try that mantra of hers.
“Everything…” — inhale; she doesn’t even recognize the sound of her own voice, exhale— “is perfect… just the… just…”
The neighbor resumes his not-so-passive aggressive elephant dance above her head. But Nadya’s weeping so loudly she can barely hear him.
Adrian rests the back of his hand against her forehead lightly. The chill of his touch makes her shiver — and more importantly brings Nadya out of wherever she was that kept her from being there with him.
But Nadya’s relief is short-lived.
“It’s been some time since I’ve had a temperature to feel but I know a fever when I see one.” She tries to wave off his concern like she has every other time, but no dice. “Why didn’t you tell me you were sick?”
“‘Cause I’m not.”
“Is that so?”
“Mmmhm…” Though it would probably help if Nadya remembered what she was mmhm-ing about. But her desktop screen-saver hasn’t been updated since Windows 95 so there goes her hopes of pretending.
Adrian isn’t having it. Mindful of her not-tip-top-shape condition he grabs the arms of her desk chair and turns her slowly; his pace painfully careful and full of caution.
Like she doesn’t know the strength he’s capable of. Like she hasn’t felt it under her own skin.
“Nadya — please Nadya look here, look at my finger.”
She remembers the last time he sounded that worried. One of the rare times the things she sees are both from her eyes and not — where she’s both the main character in the story and just another villain. Back at the Musea Sanguis.
When Valdas did this to me, she thinks bitterly.
But Adrian can’t know about that; can’t see her as weaker and more fragile than she already is. So she sits up a little straighter in her chair — pauses Adrian’s efforts at playing doctor because there’s no way she would be able to see the sun with how badly her glasses are smudged from sleep — and dutifully follows the path he traces in the air.
Nadya (with the surprising aid of Kamilah no less) had eventually managed to convince Adrian whatever psychic mind games the strange and impossibly enigmatic vampire had played on her was nothing more than a one-off. He was no less attentive but that’s just who Adrian is; she could accept that.
Kamilah was a different story. She didn’t help downplay the situation to Adrian because she was content to let Nadya deal with everything alone. Back in the Shadow Den, Nadya had confessed the painful truths of her headaches and nightmares. Hoping, praying maybe, that someone with her wealth of experience and knowledge could give a name to her torment.
Only she couldn’t. And Nadya watches her carry the weight of it every single night.
What Kamilah refuses to understand though is that Nadya is just… so tired. She’s tired of the questions and studies and the three PET scans because why not buy an extremely expensive brain imaging machine for the secret lab underneath your financial empire for one single person.
Nadya knows she’s a terrible person for complaining. She knows Kamilah just wants her alive and safe and pain-free.
She’s just so very very tired.
Adrian groans with effort as he stands. Old habits in pretending to be human, he told her once. Not that he needs to — they’re all alone up here. Nadya is convinced he just likes doing it.
“Well doctor,” Nadya teases, “tell it to me straight. Will I live?”
He doesn’t find it nearly as funny.
“If you were feeling overworked you should have told me.”
“I manage constant anxiety — this is kind of just a state of being.”
“Then maybe we should get you properly che—”
“No.”
Which is her biggest mistake; and she’s made quite a few. But no one is so adamant so quickly without looking suspicious. Nadya is no exception.
She tries to backtrack. “I just… I don’t like doctors. Actual doctors — not my boss.”
“I am an actual doctor,” he corrects but it’s offhanded, “and that isn’t the point. You’re a grown woman — I know — and I don’t want to overstep.”
“Then don’t.”
Adrian closes his mouth softly; lets the words die in the back of his throat. Nadya avoids watching as he returns to his office because she knows she won’t be strong enough to keep up the act. Remember, she reminds herself, this is for the best.
It’s to Adrian’s credit when he emerges from his office come the end of the work night with his coat over his arm and a smile on his face. Even if it is a little strained around the edges.
“Ready to head out?” he asks like nothing happened. Like she wasn’t a stone cold witch to him earlier because he made the mistake of caring.
Nadya hesitates. She had already resigned herself to taking the subway home. But rather than make it harder on herself she just nods and gathers up her things; knows he watches her every motion with sharp eyes and preternatural focus even while her back is turned.
If he isn’t convinced of her ruse by the time she joins him at the elevator he doesn’t say anything. Just holds the door open for her and makes chit-chat to fill the silence. Maybe some day she’ll be able to choke out how grateful she is for it.
When Adrian finally pulls up in front of her building, Nadya is practically already halfway out of the car. He stops her with a hand on her arm.
“Is Lily still out?” he asks, but what he means is are you still alone.
Nadya tries not to make it obvious when she shrugs him off.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Adrian.”
“… See you tomorrow, Nadya.”
He doesn’t pull away until she’s in her building and the door is closed behind her.
Later on, in the middle of the day when she wakes from a deep sleep choking on the feeling of blood hot and wet and satisfying running down her throat a small part of Nadya can’t help but blame him.
She shouldn’t… but she’s doing a lot of things she shouldn’t lately.
Kamilah leans back in her chair and mulls over the flavor of the wine. She’s got that face on that Nadya always worries about when they do things like this. Enigmatic; like she has thoughts but they’re probably much harsher than the words she actually says; “It wouldn’t be my first choice to pair with our meal, but it has its merits.”
“You hate it.”
“Did I say that?” Kamilah quirks an eyebrow her way and that look makes Nadya squirm in her seat for ten thousand other reasons; none of which have to do with wine, the amazing fish entree in front of her, or the high-end restaurant in general.
Nadya calms herself with a sip of her own. She’s actually kind of a fan of it. Sure it was the first fruity option on the menu (after Kamilah translated, of course) but that didn’t mean it wasn’t as ritzy as every other bottle on every other table.
“You didn’t have to let me pick.”
“I wanted to see which appealed most to you.”
When Kamilah says things like that, Nadya can’t help but feel like she’s part of some grand experiment. An attempt at seeing how ‘the other half lives’ or something equally ridiculous. “Why?”
Why let me choose something when its obviously wrong?
Like everything she does, Kamilah chooses her answer carefully.
“You did not choose because you knew the brand, nor the label or even the translation of it. You did not choose this particular wine because you had tried it before, or because you hoped it would compliment some aspect of our meal.”
Nadya feels the tips of her ears burning hot and takes another large gulp to calm her nerves. “I picked the first thing I saw, Kamilah. It’s not that deep.”
Then Kamilah surprises her; she smiles. Not something overly brilliant and bright and yearning — but rare in public and rarer still these days.
“On the contrary. I have always known humans were impulsive creatures. But your impulses fascinate me, Nadya,” Her fingertip traces slender around the lip of her wine glass; holds Nadya hypnotic like everything else about her; her voice, her beauty… that striking sincerity.
“More than any other. Perhaps in ways I do not yet know how to articulate.”
At the other end of the restaurant the violinist returns from his break and resumes his melody; long, slow and rich. Like if he put Kamilah herself into song.
Without breaking their eye contact Nadya carefully turns the woman’s hand facing up by the wrist. Kamilah crooks her finger; scrapes just the tip of her nail tentatively over her human pulse point that has to be like a marching band in her supernatural ears.
Heck, Nadya doesn’t even have supernatural hearing and she catches every thump-thump of her own heart clear as day.
It’s so so rare that Kamilah shows this — and for this long. This kind of public affection; scandalous, salacious practically. Not like she hasn’t been constantly stroking the inside of Nadya’s calf with the tip of her boot since they sat down, though.
It had taken Nadya a couple of months (and more than a few evenings of forcing—actually forcing—Adrian to stop working, pull out the scotch, and explain exactly what the heck might be running through Kamilah’s mind for Nadya’s own mental peace) but she understands now.
Kamilah isn’t private because she’s embarrassed of Nadya. No — Kamilah is private because she is greedy for moments like these. She keeps them behind closed because they are for her eyes only; memories for her to brand onto her soul.
Kamilah weaves their hands together gracefully; the silver of Nadya’s charm bracelet curled in a possessive touch.
“Kamilah…” she whispers, and watches as the woman kisses the back of her hand reverently.
“Nadya.”
Only Kamilah can make her name both a warning and a promise.
[TEXT]: I c SOMEONES bed is still made [TEXT]: gedditttttt ;););)
[TEXT]: OMG Lily stop it
Lily takes her sweet time replying. Leaves Nadya waiting… and waiting… and then there’s the sweet sweet nectar of the gods coffee in front of her and there’s even a little bit of cinnamon sprinkled on top and Lily can wait.
The coffee needs her.
She takes the mug in both hands and drinks deeply — of course the brew scalds her tongue but how is it that Gerard can make such a darn good cup of coffee every time?
“Careful now,” says the Englishman while he goes about putting together Kamilah’s usual table setting; paper folded crisp to the financial section, “you’ll spill all over your nice blouse.”
She’ll give him that, actually. But as she brings her mug to her lips his amused smile falters, then vanishes altogether. For an old man who barely sees the sun Nadya didn’t think he could get any more pale until she sees it with her own eyes.
She follows his startled look to the red marks adorned on her wrists. Bracelets of bruises and Nadya herself was a little surprised when she caught sight of them but if memory serves Kamilah had… ahem, tied the scarves a little tighter than usual.
“Oh. Ha. Uh…”
“Oh I don’t think that is any business of mine,” Gerard recovers hastily, “so long as you’re aware of them, I suppose. Though I’d ask for my peace of mind that you ask Lady Kamilah to fix that for you before you leave.”
When the butler’s back is turned, Nadya touches the skin gently. It barely even hurts.
Kamilah joins them shortly after; returns the butler’s “Good evening, Lady Kamilah,” with a nod and the kind of smile she reserves only for him while she sits.
Nadya knows the routine quite well by now. Kamilah exchanges wordless pleasantries, then takes a sip of her espresso. When she’s cleared the first page of the paper’s financial reports she might join in on a conversation, but more often than not simply continues reading.
So it’s safe to say that when Kamilah pushes the paper aside and turns her seat to face Nadya fully it feels like she’s woken up in an episode of The Twilight Zone.
“Well good morning to you too, sunshine.” Nadya smiles… and doesn’t get one back.
“Why didn’t you tell me your nightmares were getting worse?”
The color drains from Nadya’s face. There goes the mood.
Behind them, Gerard makes a point of clearing his throat far louder than necessary. “You know — I think I might have forgotten to grab the laundry tonight.” He quickly rinses off the last of his dishes and takes his leave of them.
Kamilah waits expectantly in silence. She won’t be repeating herself. Only Nadya can’t muster up the courage to even look her in the eyes anymore.
Instead she fiddles with her nails in her lap. “I guess pretending not to know what you’re talking about is out of the question…”
“Astute,” replies the vampire curtly.
“Any chance I could beg for this to happen any other time but now?” But that just gets her a raised eyebrow in reply so, yeah no. And the idea of waiting out the patience of a woman like Kamilah is borderline laughable. Yet Nadya — she just can’t. Like the idea physically has her in knots and the biggest one is on her tongue which she kind of needs to, you know, speak.
“Please,” and she hates how pitiful she sounds; how weak, “please Kamilah can we… can we not ruin this?”
“I don’t grasp your meaning.”
“This. Us, right now. After a really good date and—and a really good night and… the morning or-whatever-after is supposed to be good too and if we start talking about it I just…” I’m going to ruin it like I ruin everything.
Though she’s thrown for a loop when Kamilah reaches out; places a firm palm on Nadya’s knee and waits, permanent and present, until she gets what she wants.
And maybe Nadya gives a little bit too much too easily. “You already know what’s happening. What else do you want me to say?” Yes, of course they’re getting worse. But if she admits that, she can’t pretend any more.
“You may sleep through these night terrors of yours, Nadya, but perhaps it would benefit you to realize it is you alone that does.”
No it doesn’t — it doesn’t benefit her at all. In fact the realization of it makes her queasy. Suddenly Nadya wishes she hadn’t guzzled half of her coffee and daily sugar intake.
“I didn’t mean to…” didn’t mean to choke on my words, “to wake you.”
“I believe you. If you had maybe you would have been honest with me from the beginning.” Kamilah definitely doesn’t miss the way her heart skips a beat; her frown deepens.
“I—I’ve been honest with you…”
“How easily you lie.”
“Okay — okay mostly; I’ve been mostly honest with you.” The more she talks the harder it gets for Nadya to keep the edge out of her tone. She’s not had a restful sleep in weeks, darn it, she’s owed a little snappiness.
Unlike Adrian though, Kamilah doesn’t take kindly to her attitude. She leans back in her seat with one leg over the other and if this is how she treats the people she does business with no wonder she’s one of the most powerful executives in the country.
“And pray tell how am I to fulfill my promise to you with only mostly-truths? How are mostly-truths able to better help me understand your suffering so that somehow I may discover a way to ease it?”
“Maybe because you keeping your promise isn’t my first priority right now.”
“But it is mine.”
“It’s not about you, Kamilah.”
“Isn’t it?”
Nadya grits her teeth. “No. It isn’t. None of this is about you. I’m the one going through it all, not you.”
Her words are bitter at the back of her throat all the way up to the tip of her tongue and beyond. Like something thick and dark and foul that seeps from her pores and just… out.
After a moment Kamilah takes her espresso and sips it idly. It’s something to do with her hands that isn’t harmful, something to do with her mouth that isn’t scolding.
Nadya thinks of a dozen different ways to apologize in the following quiet. One day she might even pluck up the courage to say them.
“What happened?” She asks instead, and watches Kamilah’s reaction. The stiffness of her breaks Nadya’s heart. “You said it yourself; I’m asleep. And I don’t always remember —”
“Last night included.”
She nods. “Last night included. So… please? Please.” Which is far too much begging for someone actually terrified to get their answer.
But she’s a glutton for punishment. That much is crystal clear.
For a moment it looks like Kamilah is ready to walk away; that she’s had enough. Then she changes her mind. It hits Nadya way too late that the woman is shifting in her seat; that she’s uncertain.
“That bad, huh?”
“It is not an incident I wish to repeat.”
“Like I do?” And she totally deserves the glare sent her way. “You know what I mean.”
“You were in immense distress, Nadya!” Kamilah very nearly shouts. Though even that holds her usual husked tone; her inner silence. She doesn’t raise her voice out of rage and that knowledge is scaring the both of them.
What it means is scaring the both of them.
“You tossed and turned and nothing would wake you. My every effort was wasted — I would have had better luck rousing a statue to life! I find myself despairing to think of what it must be like when you sleep alone in your own bed. Without someone to at least try… even if in vain. Without someone to…”
Don’t stop now. She has to hear it; she has to. “Without someone to what, Kamilah?”
“Without someone to hold you down and keep you from hurting yourself.”
Suddenly her wrists are a far less pleasant thing to look at; now that she knows they aren’t bruises of pleasure, but bruises of pain.
Kamilah watches as she rubs at the skin self-consciously. “I meant to heal you before you woke. So that you would not have to see what I resorted to.”
“You held me down hard enough to bruise.”
“And the very sight repels me.” Kamilah tries to take her hands but Nadya can’t help it — she pulls back with an impulse she doesn’t really understand, “When I had tried everything I could think of to no avail… I weighed my options. I would rather you know and understand what these nightmares are doing to you than find yourself unable to wake up at all.”
Unable to wake up at all. Hard words for Nadya to swallow. But they’ve got nothing on the pain Kamilah tries to hide with the long curtain of her hair. Something so strong she can’t push it back beneath the mask.
With a deep breath Nadya rests her wrists turned up in Kamilah’s hands. Rests a lot more in them too — and not even just tonight, right here right now. But it’s Nadya who solves everyone else’s problems — not the other way around. Can she be blamed for holding something back? For trying to keep herself from being vulnerable in the face of such invulnerability?
Slender fingers brush softer than a feather over Nadya’s skin.
“I anticipated… an uglier sight than this.” The vampiress admits and her voice is strained. The very thought is eating her alive.
“Well, it’s not. And, hey — did I hurt you?” She roams her eyes over every visible inch of the woman. Just because she can’t see anything, though, doesn’t mean nothing is there.
Kamilah can’t stand the sight any longer — regardless of lack of pain or noble intent. She holds back on answering Nadya’s question to bring a hand to her parted lips. The barest flash of pearly white, then red beading like a swollen jewel in compliment with her skin.
Kamilah takes great care in easing the blood over and into her skin; like a fine oil or lotion — something to make Nadya beautiful.
Maybe to a vampire this is beautiful.
The bruising heals rapidly before their eyes; holds Nadya captive in a reel on fast-forward that blooms to purpling blue to mottled red to greenish to yellow then poof. Like it never even happened.
Kamilah strokes the result with a tenderness that should be reserved for fine silks and glittering gold. Should be, Nadya thinks, and yet it’s her that gets that affection; that promise.
Who needs impassioned declarations of love when they could have this?
“I know you mean to ask if you somehow managed to injure me physically while you slept. But when I say I was wounded…” she knows Nadya so so well and keeps her from pulling away by lacing their fingers together, “when I say I was wounded, I do so in the hopes that you’ll understand I will no longer accept mostly-truths.”
She’s regretting saying that the more Kamilah repeats it. “I understand.”
“Best that you do.”
Nadya pushes herself into the woman’s arms in a tight embrace; buries her face into the coolness of her neck and it jostles Nadya’s glasses askew but she couldn’t care less. If she had looked at Kamilah for one more moment she would have broken down.
All this and they still don’t have any answers. They just have more questions and more symptoms and… and more resolve, maybe. But it’s not something they can solve in one night.
And just because Nadya doesn’t remember anything clear from her nightmares doesn’t mean they don’t linger. Something of a shadow in the corner of her eye when she looks in the mirror.
Maybe its time she forces that shadow into the light.

Fanfiction: Why Is It So Popular?
As someone on tumblr, you probably know what fanfiction is and know why it is popular. My AP Literature teacher, however, wasn’t so informed.
My senior year, we were required to write a research paper about a trend. Some people did the rate of divorce, others did the increase of body modification and someone even did the death of Pokemon Go.
Our teacher recommended that we chose a topic that we were familiar with, and my first 2 thoughts were fanfiction and anime. I had already had a friend that had done anime the year the before, so I thought “why not?”
And thus, my senior paper was born:
March , 2018
Fanfiction: Why Is It So Popular?
INTRODUCTION:
Generally, the word “fanfiction” conjures an image of lonely hermits, obsessive fans, or even dangerous flirtation with copyrights, but lately, fanfiction has been given a new face―a face of validity, expression, and even publication. Since January 2012, the amount of fanfiction for just one fandom (a collection of fans supporting a certain medium) has increased an astonishing 1,154% (Pellegrini). Objectively, fanfiction is a fan-made story that contains strong elements of the original work, generally using the same characters, themes, and other various components. For example, there are numerous works based off Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, continuing on the story of Mr. and Mrs. Darcy; in fact, there has been a recent increase of published novels based on Pride and Prejudice of 32% since 2015 (“List of Literary Adaptations of Pride and Prejudice”). Why? Because fans were not satisfied with the original content; they wanted to see more of Elizabeth and Darcy’s relationship or they wondered what the characters would do in a zombie apocalypse or any other variation of “what if?” Fanfiction allows “amateur writers” to express their love for a book, tv show, game, etc., and whether it’s because of the lack of LGBT themes in most published works or the increasing ease of sharing their fiction, fanfiction writers are not likely to stop any time soon (Knorr).
BACKGROUND / HISTORY:
Although it might seem very unbelievable, fanfiction did not just start recently, or a couple decades ago, or in the 70s with that one Star Trek fanfiction. In fact, a good amount of older literature is fanfiction. If fanfiction is being defined as “any work of fiction that borrows major elements of another work of fiction,” then works such as Shakespeare’s Hamlet could technically count as fanfiction; Hamlet was originally an “ancient Scandinavian folk tale . . .[known as] ‘Vita Amlethi’ (‘The Life of Amleth’)” that Shakespeare not only re-wrote as a play, but inserted his own, personal experiences (Clark). The Iliad, The Odyssey, Oedipus Rex were all orally-told, Greek myths that someone decided needed to be written down. The only reason theses works are not recognized as “fanfiction” was because copyright was not as strict in that time and practically did not exist; after all, no one knows for sure who the real Shakespeare was because he did not officially claim his work.
Fanfiction didn’t really become a label until Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes in the 1880s and with the birth of the internet, the famous Star Trek fanfiction. Officially, “the actual term ‘fanfiction’ was coined in 1939” and was used as an insult towards crudely written sci-fi fiction (Reich). In the late 90s and early 00s, rather than the “all-purpose” fanfiction cites today, “fans carved out their own little homes on the burgeoning internet. Star Trek fans here, X-Files fans there, Frasier fans somewhere else” (Hill). Most of those sites, however, have since died and have been replaced with the “all-purpose” ones like fanfiction.net. One of the most infamous modern fanfictions is E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey. Although it is technically a published novel, James has admitted that her novel was simply a Twilight fanfiction that she had written and aftered so that she wouldn’t break the copyright (Morrison). The largest development to the world of fanfiction, however, was the birth of Archiveofourown.org in 2007, a fanfiction website that “promised stronger resistance to legal challenges” to fanfiction writers unlike other, previous websites such as fanfiction.net (Burt). With the creation of this site, older ones have begun to die out just like the fandom-centric ones of the past.
#1 REASON:
Over the years, fanfiction has morphed from a shameful pass time to a socially acceptable medium of expression. Published authors have been, in fact, recommending fanfiction as a positive way to start writing. The author of the Princess Diaries Meg Cabot came out about her fanfiction writing, saying, “I myself used to write Star Wars fan fiction when I was tween. I think writing fanfiction is a good way for new writers to learn to tell a story” (Romano). And many other famous authors have made a contribution to the fanfiction community: Cassandra Clare, author of Mortal Instrument Series; Orson Scott Card, author of Ender’s Game; S. E. Hinton, author of The Outsiders; Neil Gaiman, author of The Sandman Series, and so many others (O’Brien, Kovach).
While visiting a Writing Workshop, the published author hosting it, Pamela Thibodeaux, encouraged me to begin writing and posting fanfiction in order to start a healthy fanbase, so that when I go to get a book published, the transition is much smoother. Writing fanfiction is just as stimulating as writing an original novel. In a CNN article about fanfiction, they explicitly stated that “even if the subject matter is a little blue [writing fanfiction] is a positive form of self-expression,” compelling parents to “encourage writing” (Knorr). In fact, the main difference between the two is that writing fanfiction “takes the pressure of world-building off” which allows the writer to explore their writing style without getting tangled up in creating something from scratch (McQuien). In a way, fanfiction is the box of cake mix in the literature world―it helps amateurs to take the first step of baking without getting too overwhelmed, but in the end, it can taste just as good.
#2 REASON:
As the overall acceptance and validity of fanfiction has increased, fanfiction has found its way into the publishing world, being branded as actual literature. Time-honored novels such as Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice have several published, fan-made additions and recreations of the original tale like Pride and Prejudice II: The Sequel by Victoria Park and Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which was turned into a filmed phenomena in 2016 (“List of Literary Adaptations of Pride and Prejudice”). Although there have been many literary adaptations of this novel spanning as far back as 1932, there has been a 32% increase of published fanfictions just for this fandom (“List of Literary Adaptations of Pride and Prejudice”).
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has also witnessed this movement with his iconic Sherlock Holmes series, especially with the popular television series Sherlock, a “modernization” (or modern au [alternate universe] in fanfiction jargon) of the classic cases between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson (“8 unconventional Sherlock Holmes adaptations”). These published fanfictions have been able to keep the trademarked names of their beloved characters, but many novels had to undergo extensive editing to cross the line of “fanfiction” into “literature.”
One of the most famous, or rather infamous, examples of this is how E. L. James’ 50 Shades of Grey was originally a Twilight fanfiction (Morrison). Another, perhaps not as well known, is L. Stoddard Hancock’s Cruel and Beautiful World, which was heavily based off of J. K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter; in fact, her novel indulges the ship [romantic pairing] of Hermione and Draco, fondly known as “Dramione” in the Harry Potter fandom (Sarner). While some fanfictions have to undergo a facelift in order to be published, their true identity still remains intact: they are still devoted extensions to the esteemed works of another author.
#3 REASON:
Fanfiction has evolved greatly throughout history, and how to post fanfictions and share them with the world is just getting easier and easier. As mentioned prior, the creation of Archive of Our Own revolutionized the world of fanfiction with its promise of legal support, but how? In 2002, there was a great purging of fanfictions on the original fanfiction posting website, fanfiction.net, shaking the fanfiction community and dissuading writers from posting their fanfics (Silver). It was this sort of mass-banning on works that encouraged the creation of Archive of Our Own and its legal branch the “Organization of Transformative works” where they “clarify the legality of fanfiction, champion fan-created works whenever they were legally challenged, and provide fans with legal resources in case they were targeted by copyright claims” (Silver). In short, Archive of Our Own gave fanfic writers a safe place to share their fanfictions.
Because of this difference with websites, despite the age difference and advantage Fanfiction.net may have with it, the increase of Harry Potter fanfictions on Archive of Our Own, for example, have increased 795% more than those on Fanfiction.net since 2010 (Pellegrini). Not only that, but Archive of Our Own has many other unique features that makes both writing fanfictions and reading fanfictions much more convenient such as tagging (Romano). Speaking from personal experience as a user of both Fanfiction.net and Archive of Our Own, although the first is not a bad place to read fanfiction, it is not nearly as user-friendly. For example, if I wanted to read a Harry Potter fanfiction, I could easily do so on both sites, but if I wanted to read a Harry Potter fanfiction that had the ship “Dramione” or had “zombies” or where Fred didn’t die, I can only specify those tags on Archive of Our Own to find that perfect fanfiction. And fanfiction sites are still continuing to expand, to shape, to mold themselves in order to fit the preferences of the ever-evolving writers that post on them.
#4 REASON:
The world of literature is a diverse melting pot of ideas and people, but even with this diversity, there are many minorities that are pushed to the side such as the LGBT community―in the world of fanfiction, however, they are the majority. Seeing LGBT often connotes inaccurate concepts, especially in literature, where one thinks “gay” when they see LGBT and then “the label of ‘gay’ often overshadows the important elements of the story/author, often tarnish[ing] the book before it can be read” (Guy). The LGBT community is so much more than just “gay,” and those different branches are very rarely explored in published literature, but in fanfiction, they florrish.
Although majority of fanfiction does involve romance and a good amount of it involves couples of the same sex, that is not the only layer as is with most “gay” literature. In fanfiction, everyone is represented―if you want to read a fanfiction where the main character is asexual, where the main character is genderfluid, where there’s a polyromantic relationship, where someone is aromantic, bisexual; no matter what it is you want, I can almost guarantee it’s out there somewhere. The fanfiction website Archive of Our Own found that only 38% of their users were heterosexual, meaning that at least 62% belong to the LGBT community and more people identified as genderqueer than as male (Hu). Everyone wants to be represented in media, to have someone to relate to.
The little gay literature that is there, is only just now being reprinted, falling out of print since the 80’s, and a good amount of it is being banned (Healey). For example, Amazon refused to sell a gay Victorian novel, claiming it was “pornagraphic,” yet they have an entire section for “erotic” fiction such as 50 Shades of Grey (Healey). With fanfiction, writers don’t have to worry about labels, whether a couple is straight or homosexual or genderqueer or whatever. Writers care about the stories, the chemistry between the characters that make them a dynamic duo, and with fanfiction, writers can share that.
CONCLUSION:
Fanfiction has existed for centuries with Sophocles's Oedipus Rex and Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek and it shows no sign of stopping now. In fact, the amount of fanfiction hasn’t just increased because of its acceptance or its publication or the ease of posting, but because of new and continuous material.
Before the release of BBC’s show Sherlock, there were fanfictions based on the original book, and the addition of the show allowed Sherlock Holmes and John Watson to become more familiar, and thus, more fanfictions to be added to the overall fandom. The same occured with the Harry Potter fandom. When Jack Thorne’s play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (a published fanfiction continuing J.K. Rowling’s original series Harry Potter), fanfiction writers exploded with new material, new ideas, and new fanfictions; a total of 1,682 fanfictions concerning Harry Potter and the Cursed Child have been posted on Archive of Our Own since the play’s release date in 2016 (Search Results for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child). Due to the recent release of Voltron: Legendary Defender in 2016, there has been a staggering 5,054% increase of fanfiction for the show originally from the 80’s (Search Results for Voltron).
With every reinstatement of a show, a new generation of potential fanfiction writers are exposed to it, adding on to the classic mediums other fanfiction writers wrote about before them such as Star Trek or Sex in the City, where there are still significant increases of 8,600% since 2005 and the show ended in 2004 (Kneale). Fanfiction increases because more and more people are being exposed to that world. Just as there will always be incoming literature and TV shows and movies, new fanfictions will be trailing in afterwards like a relentless shadow.

A fandom message from EarthLaughsInFlowers regarding the unpleasantness - because she doesn’t have a tumblr but feels invested in our fandom as a reader and reviewer. I’m sure many of you fic author’s have been privileged to receive one of her well thought out and well spoken reviews. She sent me a massage and asked me to share this with you.
It’s large (because she is endearingly verbose) - so it’s going under a keep reading tag - but it’s really wonderful to read her pov on the subject in case any of you are interested. She’s just SO kind. 💙💛 <3 Jandy
I wish there were an easier way (to talk to all of you). I really don't have anything to hide in terms of being contacted, it's more than I don't have the time. I spend a lot of my day on my computer. I spend some of each day indulging what has become a really wonderful hobby, reading and responding to Betty and Jughead fan fiction. I have no idea why I landed on them. I saw season one and was like, aren't they wonderful? The first story that I read (by randomly Googling -- isn't that lucky?!) was Fall in Light, so that certainly helped.
For me, I think you're all wonderful, highly creative, passionate people. It's a joy seeing these authors and illustrators and cheerleaders entirely new world to me. It's fascinating. The prospect of spending any more time on my computer keeps me away from engaging more than I do. I thought what I needed was boundaries. I've been maintaining this very charmed loop. I read something, write a huge comment, and I generally get a response from the author. Sometimes we write back and forth. It's a lovely experience, and a great interaction for me. Something with this past week has changed how I feel about that, so I've actively been contacting authors on Tumblr (and here) whose work I admire to let them know that they are appreciated and respected for their beautiful efforts. I really do feel like I should reach out more. I gladly consume so much. I want to give back more to the people who are essentially feeding my really fun, new, hobby. I've noted elsewhere that I read and write/type incredibly fast. So I can push myself a bit more out of my comfort zone.
I've read Haunted. I liked Haunted. I commented extensively on Haunted. I've decided that while I have put Haunted to bed, and don't need to read it in whatever form it takes next.
There are two things firm in my mind about what I've seen visiting Tumblr pages over the last few days.
You cannot claim something that is not yours to claim. Art, literature, a car, an identity, if it's not yours, it's not yours. If you want to use it, ask. I understand there's an argument that everything is a copy of something else, but we're not talking about how The Lion King is Hamlet re-worked. We're talking about someone who copied writing from one author, and passed it off as their own. We have to treat the online world as the real world, and in the real world, if you do that, you face consequences for your actions. If you claim to create something but you didn't, that's wrong. It is brave to own up to mistakes. We are living in a time when people don't own up to mistakes, and still get rewarded. So it's good to set the right tone. For me, every time something does something they know is wrong, and they think that they can get away with it, it's not only the sin, it's the cynicism. We all know copying the works of others is wrong. It's drilled in our heads as kids. So it's not just that this person, who wrote lovely responses to my very long comments (responses that I continue to like), did something wrong, it's that they knew it, and didn't fix it. They thought that they could get away with it. There is something unsettling about that. I often say, "don't say sorry, change!" when I am exasperated. I think we apologize too much now, and we think that's the end of it. We don't allow for the fact that the other person may not want to accept our apology, and we don't allow for ourselves and others to learn from the experience.
It is peculiar to sit on the outskirts (by choice) of a fandom, and look in. I know very little about fandom, but I do know how to comment on stories on Ao3, and authors out there are respected and appreciated and admired. You've poured your heart, souls and experiences into these stories, and have crafted some incredible works of fiction. I don't know how to debate whether or not fan fiction is "real" literature, because to me it is. On a personal level, I can identify with it, react to it, respond to it. That's incredible. So that work needs to be commended and rewarded. You're all really gifted! It's strange, as a reader, to have interacted with Haunted, and to know that's over. It doesn't change how I look at other works on here, because I view it in isolation. I don't think that plagiarism is an isolated incident, but as a reader, it doesn't affect how I look at, say, Blood, Sweat and Heartbeats. I understand that my view as a reader could be different than a writer. You're pouring yourselves into producing content (for free!), content that is disruptive of the traditional process of who gets to tell stories, and why, and how, and where. I've read more about birth control, LGBTQA, fore play, experimentation, experiences like child birth, abortion, miscarriage, addiction, families, friends... I've read more sophisticated explorations of all these topics and more on this site, in the past year, than I ever have, and again, reading everything and then writing about what I've read is a hobby for me! That's extraordinary. Occasionally I got to do it all in a story that might have also involved space, or zombies, or the Middle Ages, and that is very special. I sincerely hope that any people who feel disheartened by this past week remember, again, your efforts are loved and valued. Your contributions are special. If the person who uploaded Haunted chooses to share something in the future, then that's great too. You can learn from your mistakes and move forward.
My few days on Tumblr left me distressed. I saw a lot more positive than bad, but I saw negativity. I can't tell if it's one account spewing out venom, but that's one account too many. I occasionally check Tumblr for stories to read, or pictures to see, or author commentary. In a massive coincidence, I happened to check on Monday. In another massive coincidence, I happened to be chained to my computer for work (on my vacation). So I watched everything in real time. I watched many of you process your shock, and I watched many of you voice powerful and complex opinions on the nature of forgiveness, what plagiarism means to you, the value of fan fiction, your place in fandom, and your own experiences with a blending of these issues. It was really moving. I read it all. I bounced from account reading it all.
And then I watched the abuse roll in. And I decided that I couldn't just sit around watching. I feel for those of you who have been attacked. What a hideous experience. My heart goes out to you. I talked earlier about it being brave to apologize, well, it's damn near heroic to face the abuse that some of you are facing, just for having a different opinion. I started to notice blogs turning off Anonymous commenting, beseeching Tumblr staff to do something, blogs going silent, blogs being deleted.
It's been a heady experience, again, as someone who solely wanted to be able to write comments under stories to suddenly think, "I can't just not say something. That's wrong. I don't know what possesses a person to do that, to hang out on someone's blog and send them hate filled messages. But I can do something nice. I can be a nice Anon! I always identify myself, as best I can "Hi! I comment on your stories on Ao3 as EarthLaughsInFlowers! I don't have Tumblr!" and send nice messages. That's all I've got so far. That's a troubling best answer, as a fully grown adult. But I promise to do that more.
So now, if I'm checking Tumblr, I'll leave you a nice note. I would want that. Please, keep sharing your stories! Keep sharing your art! Keep sharing your ideas!
You are valued, you are appreciated, you are respected. Sending you all love.

So in the run up to Christmas I’ve been doing a count-down (well, a count-up). Twelve days of books! But just like the song, I’ve been increasing the number of books each day, with a theme. Each of the previous posts is linked at the bottom of this one, and they’re all tagged ‘hermitknut’s bookmas’. Merry Christmas!
On the Twelfth Day of Christmas... it’s Shakespeare retold!
Dating Hamlet by Lisa Fiedler (Hamlet) is something I discovered as a teenager, and I still love it. It retells Hamlet not just from Ophelia’s perspective, but as almost a comedy. Ophelia is in on the “fake madness” plan from the beginning, and launches her own when Hamlet is made to leave. She’s witty and sharp, and the whole thing is cheesy but thoroughly enjoyable.
As I Descended by Robin Talley (Macbeth) gave me a good, thorough frightening. I’m easily spooked, I’ll admit, but this was done really well. Basically, it’s f/f Macbeth set in a high school - with ouija boards and drugs, awards and sports teams. And of course, murder. Vivid and brilliant and very unsettling.
Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman (Romeo and Juliet) is set in a world where racial dynamics are effectively inverted - and for Sephy and Callum, falling in love with someone in the other group is incredibly dangerous. This romance bowled me over as a teen, and I’m really curious to see how it feels to reread it as an adult.
Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) is either the third or fourth Witches book in the Discworld series (depends how you count it), and the Fair Folk are coming back. Brilliant, hilarious, sharp and wonderful. As always.
Fool by Christopher Moore (King Lear) is good fun, though it in no way lives up to the ‘American Terry Pratchett’ claims of the cover. The humour is definitely of the farts-and-genitals variety, with the occasional more serious note that took me by surprise and seemed oddly out of place. But an entertaining romp!
The Gap of Time by Jeanette Winterson (A Winter’s Tale) was the first Hogarth Shakespeare retelling I read, and it made me want to read all of the others. The modernisation of the story is done really well, and Winterson’s writing is so enjoyable.
Ophelia by Lisa Klein (Hamlet) takes Ophelia’s perspective with a touch more reverence than the first book in this list. She escapes the play, but not completely happily. Interesting, nicely written book.
Dunbar by Edward St. Aubyn (King Lear) took a while to get started, but once it did I quite enjoyed it. Probably because I’d recently read Fool (above), I wasn’t quite prepared for the ending to be tragic - and it was a real punch in the heart.
Romeo’s Ex by Lisa Fiedler (Romeo and Juliet) retells R+J from the perspective (mostly) of Rosaline, who is a pretty kick-ass character. There’s some really fun stuff in here, and a neat little twist on the ending - though not much else do it.
Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood (The Tempest) was solidly amazing. The ‘Prospero’ of the story is Felix, who has been ousted from his prestigious position as director and ends up teaching acting in a prison. He takes the opportunity to take revenge - and regain his former status - when the people who took him down arrange to tour the prison. By putting on a production of The Tempest. Play-within-a-play at its finest; absolutely brilliant.
Shylock is My Name by Howard Jacobson (The Merchant of Venice) is quite a slow read. The writing is philosophical and almost rambling - not unpleasant or badly done, but not something I’m used to reading. I very much enjoyed the plot once it started to get moving, and there were some wonderful characters.
Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler (The Taming of the Shrew), as I think I’ve mentioned before on this blog, was not something I was particularly impressed with. Our Kate is a great character, which was a plus, and Tyler writes well - but I wasn’t convinced by the decision to get married, and it just lost my interest. A bit of a shame.

Cause and Effects
((Based on Airia's CCP. Just me playing with setting and characters in the plot's world.)) Commodore's Quarter was called home by very few sylvari. Llyr and I were the only two on our street. From our apartment, little had changed since Crawdon passed his notice, except when midweek grocery shopping approached, Llyr insisted on accompanying me to Western Ward. I understood why. We kept a short list of only the essentials: bread, milk, and eggs. The latter two we purchased from Reagen, a sylvari farmer and former Jetsam pirate, a poorly kept secret, as many other merchants in Western Ward had pirate affiliations. Llyr liked to send me to Reagan because he was easy to barter with. He raised cows and chickens in Applenook Hamlet and had a soft spot for women and children of all other races. Reagen often snuck an extra egg or two into my order and whispered, "Give your lovely mentor my regards" with a wink. However, Llyr and I found Reagan's stall deserted, his wares removed. The sulfuric odor of rotten eggs lingered on the place as several broken yolks lay discarded in the dust. A piece of paper nailed to Reagan's makeshift sign waved in the breeze, stamped with the Lionguard's emblem. Llyr grabbed the corner between two fingers and read. "Dammit. They pegged him for a Jetsam," she said, hollow. We both knew Reagan's arrest had little to do with pirate ties and everything to do with the sap in his veins. Crawdon claimed another competitor. An enemy, in business and race. While Llyr puzzled over what to do for our food, I thought of Airia. Arrested nearly a week ago, her fate yet unknown to us, her friends and family. Like many others, she had disappeared, and this time, likely not of her own volition or her mastery over shadow magic. Baine said to keep faith and hope for the best, but as the evidence mounted -- Del said just last night that Airia's cowl, an object of great power and personal importance to Airia, was brought to her covered in blood and dirt -- my faith was shaken and the best hope seemed to be "hope Airia isn't dead or lost to us forever". So far, Oaken and I were the only coalition members, and including Airia's secretary Kallum maybe the only people in Tyria, who knew about the underground slave trade, how those of us who were arrested under Crawdon's notice showed up on a ledger. Dozens of people reduced to names and numbers, and then stolen away without a trace. Without explicit orders from Oaken, I kept the information between the two of us, kept it from all the others, even Del. Especially Del. It would only serve to spread panic and dark thoughts, as it terrified me. I'd lost sleep over it, but so be it for keeping what little peace of mind there might be for everyone else. Llyr said, "We could go to --" But she was interrupted by a wail from across the market. Heads turned to a crowd gathering around the stall of a tailor. I sense anger rise in Llyr's empathy before she shoves her way through the ring of onlookers. I followed her closely, my blood turning cold. Llyr would pick a fight if something was happening. She knew little of what it was like to be powerless. Before I can do the same for Llyr, she shouted at two Lionguard, "What in blue blazes do you think you're doing?" One, a norn with a braided black beard, twisted a sylvan woman's arms behind her back. Her wide eyes darted up to Llyr under her long dark bangs. The other Lionguard, a blue-skinned sylvan with pinecone-like hair, sorted through a box of silk and gossamer. She glanced sidelong at Llyr. The norn spat. "Get out of here, girly. Don't want no trouble." "Like hell you don't. What's she in for, staring at you funny?" The sylvan Lionguard coughed, then hefted the crate into her arms. "She had unlabelled cargo in her supply. Please, ma'am. We're only doing our job." "Your job?" Llyr stormed over to the other woman. "Your -job-? You're supposed to protect the merchants, not antagonize them! You piece of dolyak shit." I grabbed Llyr's arm and tried to pull her away, but she resisted easily and glared at me. The norn roared with laughter. "A'right, all of ya scram! Else we arrest the lot of you for loitering," he yelled at the crowd, but pointed to Llyr and me. In a much lower tone, he said, "Except you two." My breath hitched and Llyr tensed. I leaned toward her and whispered, "Do as he says" as the crowd dispersed. Llyr harumped but stayed put as the norn and the sylvan Lionguard spoke to each other. I breathed deep, trying to stay calm as they deliberated. Finally, the norn released the merchant woman and spoke to her. She sighed and rubbed her wrist. "Here's the deal," he murmured within earshot. "One of the gate guards has been stealing tags off of cargo. You watch your stuff and discard anything that's unlabelled. Sucks, but that's how it is now." The merchant nodded in understanding, sullen. Then he turned to Llyr and I. "And you, girly. You watch that fiery tongue of yours. You're real lucky it's me and Fonz here." He jabbed a thumb toward his fellow Lionguard. "Otherwise, you and your friend would be in cuffs right now. Not everyone's so sympathetic." Llyr hissed. "That's a big word from a big guy like you." I jerked on her arm. "Yeah, I know. I'm a big dumb norn and you're a small stupid angry sylvari. We're both stereotypes, but one's more dangerous to be and it's stupid that I have to be the one to tell you. You better figure out which one quick before someone shows you." With that, he walked away. "Come on, Fonz. Gotta get that crate to HQ." Fonz nodded to us both and scurried off. The marketplace returned to a low buzz of activity, people staring at Llyr as they pass. Her fists clenched. I held her close, and my anger at her diminished with the threat of arrest -- and maybe slavery. I'd already lost one mother, I wasn't prepared to lose another. "Come on. We've still got the bakery to get to." "Death was too good for Scarlet," she mumbled into my chest. "She didn't have to live in this crapsack world she created." As I guided Llyr away, her words stuck with me. As Llyr felt loss because of Scarlet, so did Crawdon. Crawdon might also be angry at Scarlet -- and by extension, all sylvari. Maybe he saw this as a way to punish us for the Rattle and the deaths of his sisters? It was only a half-formed thought, but I wanted to keep it with me. I wanted to try and understand his pain, and if it came to it, use it. Anything to get Airia back, and end the underground trade once and for all.

Roth IRA v/s whole life insurance, which is better?
"Roth IRA v/s whole life insurance, which is better?
I am frustrated with my current investment company that helped me set up my whole life insurance account. They have double charged me and added fees and hidden charges. In 2 months, there have been over $200 in extra charges or extra drafts to my account. This is in addition to the monthly premium I pay for my life insurance. I have heard that a roth IRA is better than whole life insurance, is this so, and why? If I were to die, will my wife be able to have access to that money? is there early withdrawl fees if I die before retirement age? I can't trust my current financial advisor, and I don't know where to turn. My credit union does not handle IRAs. HELP?

Tell me how it is right that insurance companies charge young adult males more than female for car insurance?
The answer I seem to get is it can be statistically proven that males are more aggressive, speed and get into more accidents. That may be the case, but I am sure you can prove that a particular ethnicitiy gets into more accidents too, or that people with a particular eye color get into more accidents or that people with an IQ below 100 get into more accidents. So why don't they charge them more for car insurance too? You can say insurance companies have the right to charge more if an event is more likely to happen, like Earthquake insurance is more expensive in California than it is in Michigan. The difference there is that when you charge Californians more there, you are basing it on an uncontrollable act of nature that is almost certain to happen, but when you charge that male more for car insurance you are making judgements about a person's character, making assumptions about his future behavior and financially punishing him for it before he has even done anything. Tell me where I am wrong""

What should I do regarding my auto insurance situation?
I hit my dad's expedition with my Dodge Ram and caused about 1500 dollars in damage to my Ram, as estimated for parts and labor by a collision center, I hit the expedition's hitch which caused damage to me but barely a few scratches on the expedition. The expedition doesn't run, and is not even registered or insured. My dad is aware of the situation and has no interest in fixing his car and will not report me to the insurance or police. We have and still are on good terms. I have liability insurance, so it will not cover damage to my vehicle. My insurance policy expires in two weeks. What if I update my insurance with collision and comprehensive coverage that will cover my vehicle. Then I report that I hit an object and have them pay for it. Would this be cheaper in the short and/or long run than paying to fix out of pocket? Is such action above illegal, unethical, and/or against policy? Is there anything I can do in to lower my insurance (17 Year old)?
Okay right now I'm 16; I've passed my theory test and when I turn 17 in April I'll be able to start lessons and take a test. My mum is giving me her Peugeot 206, X reg, 1.4L engine. It has never had an issue. I've looked at insurance quotes (for a full license under the assumption that I am 17) and on compare sites and the lowest quote I've found is around 2800 a year, the car will be stored in a garage but I wondered if there is a way to lower this? I hear the average price for a 17 year-old is 1400 a year? If anyone can give me some tips it really would be appreciated; I'm looking to pay monthly if that helps. Also, I'm a guy so obviously that will raise my prices right?""

Under the Roberts ruling why cant the gov. require everyone buy car insurance.?
Whats the difference. The only differences I see argue better for the personal mandate for car insurance more than health insurance. 1. Everyone using a vehicle on a regular bases. The case is complicated and it is about my car insurance. I misinformed my insurance company about my NCD. As a result they cancelled my policy. The problem is that before they cancelled it I had a claim. My car was not damage at all but the other guy had a few scratches on the bumper and he reported the incident. My insurance company informed me; they would cancel the policy and return all the payments I made so far. They would cover the cost of the damage to another guy, but I have to repay all the cost they bear. Does the insurance company may cover the damage and request reimbursement if they cancelled my policy? Whats my option, can I refused to pay them back? Because my policy was cancelled, so should I deal with a problem on my own? I guess it would be cheaper for me to pay for the damaged bumper straight to the other person than deal with the insurance company. Please advice

How do I get health insurance for my newborn?
I am 6 months pregnant and 21 years old. I am still on my parents' health insurance, as I am an unemployed student. My boyfriend, who is an independent, is an unemployed student as well. He is currently uninsured and, as we have found, is uninsurable due to the fact that I am pregnant. My parents' health insurance WILL NOT cover grandchildren (dependents of dependents) and so my baby will not be covered on their plan. Individual health insurance plans will not cover my infant until up to 30 days AFTER he is born (and we can apply for medical insurance for him). How do I secure health care coverage for him BEFORE he comes so he can start going to the pediatrician immediately?""

I own a car and am selling it to a guy. He is the only driver. He refuses to get insurance.?
I have given him 3 months to get insurance, but he hasnt gotten it yet. I have kept the vehicle on my insurance until he gets it, but he still hasnt gotten it. And now he is complaining that I should stop insuring it so that he doesnt have to reimburse me for it. My questions are: What would happen if i dropped the insurance and he got pulled over or in a wreck? Who would be responsible, me or him? Could my rates be raised? Could I personally get into trouble with the law for allowing an uninsured driver drive an uninsured car that I own? We're in the process of getting a temporary title for him so that I won't be responsible, but in the meantime I need to know the consequences. I live in Ohio.""

Roth IRA v/s whole life insurance, which is better?
I am frustrated with my current investment company that helped me set up my whole life insurance account. They have double charged me and added fees and hidden charges. In 2 months, there have been over $200 in extra charges or extra drafts to my account. This is in addition to the monthly premium I pay for my life insurance. I have heard that a roth IRA is better than whole life insurance, is this so, and why? If I were to die, will my wife be able to have access to that money? is there early withdrawl fees if I die before retirement age? I can't trust my current financial advisor, and I don't know where to turn. My credit union does not handle IRAs. HELP?

Insurance Company sent me 2 checks?
So I recently got rear ended and the other party was at fault. I went to the appraiser that the all state agent had directed me to and had my car appraised. When I got my car appraised the appraiser wrote me a check then and there for the damages . Today I got a phone call from the insurance agent asking if my mailing address was correct and that they were going to mail me out a check for the damages that their appraiser had estimated. She never asked me once if I had already received a check for the damages. The appraiser made some kind of contact with allstate but I guess he never stated that he already had written me a check. Is it a crime if I cash both checks?
Cheapest car insurance?
I'm trying to insure my first car. It's a Rover Metro SI 1.4 auto. I'm 20 years old + am still driving on a provisional lisense. I've held this lisense for 1 year. I'd do around 5000 miles a year when I pass + want third party as the car is only worth 350. I'm also a lady as I know that makes some insurers cheaper. I've tried moneysupermarket.com + confused.com + Quinn comes up the cheapest with a deposit of 109 + then 10 months at 43. However both sites have a big list of insurers that they could not provide quotes for. Does anyone know, or is anyone with a cheaper insurer than Quinn Direct? I live in England, so no American insurers thanks :)""

Which is the best car insurance coverage for an affordable price?
Right now I am insured with Allstate. I am under an Allstate plan called the gold protection plan in which I will be eligible for a new car if there is an accident. I think I am paying a liitle too much for car insurance. I have a 2004 Honda civic and a 2006 Honda civic. Both cars has full coverage. Does a two year old car need full coverage. I am a safe driver and so far there have been no accidents. But two times some one came and hit my older car and both times the damage was covered under the other party's insurance. Is comprehensive coverage enough for me or is it a good idea to keep the full coverage. Any recommendation.

When does car insurance lower for a guy?
I am 20 years old, I have been driving for the past 4 years with my parents cars. I pay through my parents for my insurance. I am looking to buy my own car and the insurance is only slightly lower than paying for what I have now! I looked at an 01 Ford Focus and it will cost my $1200 for 6 months! I also looked at a Ford Taurus it was about $900 for 6 months, a 97 Malibu is about the same as is a 97 Olds. The cheapest insurance I could find was a 94 Ford Ranger which is only $850 for 6 months. Car insurance excess?

Why am I getting such high auto insurance quotes?
I'm really frustrated. I wanted to finally get auto insurance next month. But the free quotes I'm getting on insurance websites (such as Progressive, AllState and Geico) is WAY too expensive! My brothers insurances were always like $160-$180 for 6 months. But I just got a quote from AllState for over $500 for 6 months and $381 for 6 months from Progressive. That's NUTS! I have a 1995 Ford F-150 pickup. And sure, it's bigger than my brothers Ford Ranger and my other brothers Ford Aerostar van, but still.....why is it THAT MUCH MORE expensive? I'm in my 30's and have never had an accident or traffic voilation of any kind within the 14 years I've been driving. I guess none of that matters.
