Expulsionist (Inquisitor Archetype)

 I love the archetypes of Pathfinder. I really do. Certainly it wasnât the first ttrpg system to do specializations or alternate power sets for the same core class, but it was the first system to do it to that extent, with a massive amount of options even back when it was just the 1e Advanced Playerâs Guide, and it only grew from there over the 10 year lifespan of the system. (In fact, some would argue that it grew too much, using phrases like ârules bloatâ, but I donât pay them much mind).
However, one problem that I will concede is that with 10 years of writing, occasionally you get some archetypes for the same class that cover the exact same ground conceptually.
Weâve talked about this before, and while we canât really confirm it because Paizo isnât really in the habit of doing tell-all AMAâs on their creative process, but the reasons this happens varies on a case by case basis, ranging from them legitimately forgetting that said previous option exists, to trying to do the concept better the second time around, and so on.
Which brings us to todayâs entry, the Expulsionist inquisitor, a master of kicking possessing spirits out of mortal bodies and the material plane in general⊠much like the Exorcist inquisitor.
That being said, there are subtle differences in the two that are worth consideration. The exorcist is more concerned with getting the spirits out and protecting the inquisitor themselves from possession, while the expulsionist is more concerned with laying the dead to rest, having a knack not just for driving them out of living vessels, but also understanding the needs of haunts and undead, and how best to track them to where they rejuvenate and help them let go.
Heck, they even have zero overlap in modified or replaced abilities, allowing you to take both if you wish, though unless youâre playing in a game with a heavy focus on fiendish or deathly possessions, that may be too much specialization.
In any case, as we will soon see, the expulsionist is a powerful ally against spiritual foes both possessing mortals and existing independently, and is typically seen in most faiths that have a vested interest in helping the dead pass on and protecting the souls of mortals from subjugation by fiends.
 Rather than tap into a domain, these inquisitors instead learn to channel energy the way clerics do. However, they only use it to harm the undead and fiendish outsiders, learning to do the latter as well. Furthermore, they eventually learn to channel this energy into a possessed creature with a touch, damaging the possessor and potentially forcing them out.
Additionally, they learn plenty of lore about haunts and the spectral dead to both spot and identify their needs, as well as how to notice when someone is possessed, enchanted, or otherwise magically forced to behave differently.
They also learn how to read the changes in their channeled energy to see glimpses of the history of a ghost, haunt, or other rejuvenating undead, gaining insight into how to put them to rest permanently.
Whether they are facing the undead or fiends, these expulsionists can add channeled energy to their arsenal of powers against them, trading out the domain, which probably doesnât factor that hard into most builds anyway. Their ability to force possessing foes out also provides an answer for one of the oldest types of puzzle fights in the game: how to get the ghoulie out without killing the host. Itâs also unobtrusive enough that even if the game doesnât feature such foes often, it can still be used in other games. In a horror campaign, however, they can really shine, or even be paired with the exorcist archetype for even more ways to expel evil spirits.
 In a setting where both exorcists and expulsionists exist, and are sometimes both at once, consider what that means. On the one hand, exorcists modify the nature of their judgements to cast down their enemies, focusing more on freeing a mortal and expelling the wicked. They choose that over multiple layers of condemnation of their enemies. Meanwhile, an expulsionist chooses to forgo their granted domain, giving up on a special connection to an aspect their deity favors to protect mortals and destroy evil spirits. Both of those decisions have significance, and it is up to the inquisitor in question to decide what that means.
  Eager to prove herself but unfamiliar with the outside world, the novice expulsionist Bethari accidentally caused a ruckus when she tried to exorcize a wizardâs poppet familiar. When she later catches the scent of a foul demon possessing a local leader, however, she fears that nobody will believe her, leading her to turn to the party for aid.
 Out in the wilds, there is often no one to help when a fiend with a passion for the âpersonalâ touch comes a calling. This is why roving priests are an important part of life in the savannah, such as the gnoll Lucarg, who visits village after village in a wide circuit tending to their needs, and occasionally expelling foul spirits.
 The ghost of Raymond Ligos is as cunning and vicious as the murderer was in life, capable of even greater deeds of sadism even without a body. After killing the last expulsionist who came to send him on, the city has truly run out of options, hiring the party to clear the courthouse of this menace.

In the spirit of potential future writing, I'm trying to find a building that would make a good substitution for Lin Kuei temple.
I've tried looking up ancient Chinese military barracks/forts, and have found some stuff, but is all exterior. Anyone know of any locations (or several I can cobble together) that would make good inspiration fodder?

So, uhm, religion? What's the Lin Kuei's take on that one? I know they are aware of Gods, they team up with/ encounter Raiden all the time, and have literally worked for/against Shinook, so I know they recognize higher powers... but I guess the question is, do they care?
Do they have a religion, or spiritual practice that resembles religion? Or do they have a more practical approach "gods exist, but we just consider them very strong people"?
Which segues into... do they recognize and participate in holidays, or things like birthdays? Or are all their celebrations work related (I.E. successful missions or levels of combat mastery)?

If you had to match the Lin Kuei with a dynasty, what one would it be? (I know the 2021 movie has the opening in the Ming dynasty, so the Lin Kuei is at least that old, but given that movie Bi Han hasn't aged in 400 years, and was taken is a child, its probably much older) (and also know the game probably cherry picked random Chinese things it liked).
What do you think the Lin Kuei's view on artistic culture (probably not the right word) is? I know they are heavily militaristic, but in the game, Kuai Liang offers Hanzo tea and he properly prepares it the Japanese way, that says they have something of an education other than just related to fighting?
Lastly, in the movie, everything Bi Han does is "for the Lin Kuei", but the Lin Kuei is on Earth (assumedly), and he is working for a guy who wants to enslave Earth, so what do you think the deal is?

Question about the Cryomancers. I know the game lore says that they are supposed to be rare, but I also know that the Lin Kuei have had at least 5 (grandpa, papa, older, and younger Sub Zero, and Frost). 4 of which are part of 3 generations that inherited it even with mixed blood (I'm assuming Mama Sub Zero wasn't Cryomancer since they left her alone).
That's a lot of generations in a row for a rare trait... So do you think the Cryomancers as a group have figured out they're being hunted and have chosen to live in hiding?

Lin Kuei society question? I like writing so I also like world building and I think about these things.
Is Lin Kuei society ever covered? I know there is a Grandmaster, a handful master assassins (Sub Zero's, Sektor, Cyrax, etc) and the movies always have a bunch canon fodder lesser assassins.
And they live in the very isolated Lin Kuei Palace/Temple in Arktika (or wherever it used to be)
But is Lin Kuei (we'll call it "village") ever covered?  Do they have willing servants, kidnapped slaves, or a mix of both? Are there women (non fighter women, I know there's Frost) or do they employ strictly male help? If there are women, what's their role, and are there children born there? What about Elderly? What about resources, is everything (from food, clothes, weapons, and the raw materials to create them) grown or manufactured on sight by skilled laborers or do they import/interact with the outside world? How vicious or civil is this society, could you be killed for looking at Sektor wrong or do they value your services to a degree? What's the degree? This is obviously a combat culture, but is everyone expected to know martial arts of some variety, is it optional, or do they prohibit it among the servants/slaves? How strict are they on things like clothing, food, alcohol, drugs, "luxuries", or pleasures? Money? If they interact with the world do they recognize and use $$ currency, commodity currency, or a mixture? Internally are the Lin Kuei payed or just provided for? What about illness or injury, if you're not a master and it a serious injury/illness are you taken care of or do they just give you a quick death?
Etc. That's all the questions I can think of, but please feel free to answer questions I didn't ask, if you think of anything else.
Thank you for this wonderful list to talk about! Iâm gonna split the answer into smaller parts, for better focusing on each aspect but also so I donât feel bad for keeping you waiting for ages, lol. For now letâs focus on asks about the religion!
So good questions! I do think they have some spiritual practice(s) because in martial arts the state of a mind is as important as the physical body and religion is one of many ways to shape someoneâs mindset from a young age. I do, however, think that Lin Kuei does not worship the gods. They are aware that the gods exist (with Raiden as the thorn in the side) and may even respect their supernatural powers and battle skills but it never has stopped Lin Kuei from desecrating holy places, murdering people and stealing stuff for the best price. So, it seems to me that whatever religion the members of the clan follow, by nature it is rooted in nontheism.
Of course, there is also a chance that Lin Kuei worships some forgotten deity or deities (as a remnant of their ancient connections with Outworld / realms conquered and destroyed by Shao Kahn?) or may even practice ancestor worship which seems like a good way to uphold a widely understood tradition that plays an important role in the discussed community.
The closest thing to religious practice was seen in Mortal Kombat X, when Sub-Zero and his warriors seemed to pray together before statue of god / deity / ancestor / legendary warrior / personalized thing they value the most (sadly, my knowledge about Asian religious practices or faiths is very limited so I donât have idea if the statue is supposed to represent any real god/religious symbol).
At the same time, it could be just a bluff since Grandmaster was aware of Cageâs team infiltrating the Lin Kuei territory and used this moment to lure them into a trap. Additionally, Mortal Kombat X comics presented once Kuai Liang sitting before the same statue albeit in a completely different (devoid of reverence?) position.
Of course, if we take into account Mortal Kombat Armageddon, the game states that Lin Kuei Temple placed in Arctika was actually once the Temple of Delia (the great sorceress & wife of god Argus) that at some point get abandoned and re-used by Sub-Zeroâs clan.
(In the background, we can see a statue of Delia that Lin Kuei does not worship but did not remove for whatever reason. Mixing both old and new games, we can only wonder if MKX!statue is also the remnant of someone else's faith/religion?)
Beside that, Kuai Liang was pretty vocal about Lin Kuei not worshipping the Elder Gods, what was seen in MK11âs intro dialogue with Cetrion
Sub-Zero: The Lin Kuei do not worship the Elder Gods.
Cetrion: We seek gratitude, not worship.
Sub-Zero: I see no distinction.
and personally did not have any reason to pray to the goddess:
Sub-Zero: Why should I pray to you?
Cetrion: Why does a bird flap its wings?
Sub-Zero: I asked a simple question.
In all fairness, in MK11 Kuai Liang seems the most passive-aggressive toward the Elder God while Frost is focused on her ambitions and Noob!Bi-Han just wants to be left alone when bothered by Cetrion. Similar thing happens toward Raiden. Despite gratitude for saving him, Kuai Liang does not spare the god criticism (canât serve both Elder Gods and Earthrealm, isnât fit for his role of protector) and in MKX outright says he does not fear divine beings:
Raiden: Sub-Zero...
Sub-Zero: I fear no gods, Raiden.
Raiden': That's why you shall lose.
Surprisingly, Kuai Liangâs interaction with MK11!Fujin sounds less accusing than with Raiden and Cetrion and it is connected closely to their ties with Bi-Han. And maybe Kuai Liang did seek in the past Fujin and other elements to make a peace with them, like he planned to do so in Mortal Kombat 4 Limited comics?
"I came here to make peace with the gods of the elements that you fought [...]"
Anyway, the accusingly behaviour toward Raiden and Cetrion could be just Kuai Liangâs personal dislike for gods and serious authority issues, which makes sense considering how much he suffered because of their meddling and conflicts.
But honestly?
The available examples of Lin Kuei attitude toward gods, demigods and supernatural beings suggest how little the warriors - especially cryomancers - care for them.
Like, we have Bi-Han in Mythologies, who asked Quan Chi about details of mission:
Sub-Zero: If it's so precious, why don't you get it yourself?
Quan Chi: I cannot enter the temple until the four elements within its walls have been defeated. And I am not on the best of terms with the gods of your realm... especially your god of thunder.
Sub-Zero: Tell me about these elements.
Quan Chi outright said he and earthrealm gods werenât friends and Bi-Han, reading between the lines, could get the idea that he may end on bad terms with Thunder God. Yet he was interested only in elements (lesser gods than protector of realm?) guarding the temple.
Then Bi-Han beat down four demigods and met a displeased Raiden after Quan Chi got the Shinnok Amulet. His reaction? No fear, like meeting an angry god was a normal occurrence.
Rayden: Do you realize what you've done??
Sub-Zero: I was just earning my living.
Rayden: Your clan's ignorance and greed will cost this entire realm. You must now set things straight.
Sub-Zero: Quan Chi could simply be a lunatic sorcerer. I've never heard of an elder god named Shinnok or of a place called the Netherrealm.
Rayden: Well, you'd better start believing in both, because you're going to the Netherrealm and you're going to bring the amulet back. We must act quickly. I have no dominion in the Netherrealm... You are reality's only hope.
Sub-Zero: I'll do it, Thunder God... but only because I have no choice.
And once he came back from Netherrealm, where he was fixing what he messed up in the first place on Raidenâs order, his abrasive attitude did not change much:
Sub-Zero: Here... the amulet.
Rayden: Impressive, Sub-Zero. Perhaps you will reconcile your reckless past after all.
Sub-Zero: That's it? Not even a thank you?
Of course, to some degree Raidenâs words did have an impact on Bi-Han but even the godâs warning about his soul tainted with evil did not stop him from coming back to Lin Kuei. Bi-Hanâs attitude and/or approach to gods seems to change somehow once he was reborn as Noob, but that is a different matter for different times.
Anyway, Mythologies!Bi-Han and MK11!Noob act less aggressive toward gods than Kuai Liang. But then we have Sub-Zero from from the MK novel by Jeff Rovin, who not only is not afraid of gods but outright insult them:
âWait! Be warned, Shang Tsung. He is cursed!â
âCursed? By whom?â
Ruthay wailed, âBy the immortal Yu.â
Shang Tsung felt cold spiders crawl up his spine. âThe demigod Yu?â
âYes⊠he who is said to dwell in the underground caverns of Horse Ear Mountain⊠which is sacred to the goddess Kuan Lin. He who protects the canals⊠and the tunnels⊠and looks after all who use them, human and animal.â
âWhat did our brash friend do to Yu?â
âHe⊠killed a man,â said Ruthay.
âWhat man?â
âA toll-taker⊠one who had given up a life of crime⊠one who had been a partner of the man⊠you⊠seek.â
âAnd how did that crime come to the attention of the spirit of Yu?â Shang Tsung asked.
âThe man was killed⊠slowly disemboweled with a sword⊠while accomplices forced his wife and his son to look on! After his murder⊠the manâs remains⊠were dumped into a canal!â
Shang Tsung raised an eyebrow. âIs that all? I was expecting something truly terrible!â
âIt was!â Ruthay shrieked. âWhen he disposed of the body⊠in that way ⊠he profaned one of the sacred waterways⊠of Yu!â
Shang Tsung smiled now. âThen he is definitely the man I want,â he said. âAnyone who is impudent enough to insult a demigod wonât be afraid to attack a member of the White Lotus Society, or the gods who watch after them. I will send Hamachi, Ruthay. When he nears his goal, see through his eyes and guide him!â
Book!Sub-Zero was impudent enough to insult a demigod which is why he was one of Shang Tsungâs favorites. And to be clear - book!Sub-Zero did not regret insulting the demigod at all. Even more! He found humor in it!:
He dwelt in a cave two hundred feet up the face of a cliff by the sea. The mouth of his home was barely wide enough to accommodate a slender adult, and was accessible only by climbing the sheer wall of rock, a feat that was impossible for most adults and daunting even to the few arachnids and marsupials that tried it.
Maybe some of them were even sent by Yu, he thought with a smirk, little assassins who would chastise me for having spilled blood in his precious canal.
The less abrasive attitude toward gods was shown by Cyrax, who talked a bit with Raiden over Bi-Hanâs remains. He wasnât outright antagonistic but wasnât overall respectful either. He talked with Thunder God like he would talk with any other human being that wasnât actually Scorpion. Frankly, from the named Lin Kuei only MK9!Smoke actually addressed Raiden in respectful manner, with proper bow and the name of lord
albeit did he do so because he respects the divine beings or just out of gratitude for saving him, hard to tell for sure.
So yeah, it seems like no matter what kind of timeline or age or medium of the story, Lin Kuei does not fear gods nor pray to them. And the clan has a long history of dealing with Raiden, so the Lin Kuei had first-hand experiences with supernatural beings. Somehow, cryomancers are the most impudent warriors when it comes to dealing with or criticizing the gods.
Interestingly, as much as Lin Kuei warriors donât care for gods, most of the known to us named characters believe to have - and to care - for their own souls. Sektor and MK11!Frost embraced the Cyber Lin Kuei idea but Kuai Liang, Cyrax and Smoke were opposed to C.I. project out for concern for their souls among other things. Even Bi-Han, to some degree became concerned about his soul after trip to Netherrealm.
Believing in souls is usually a sign of belief in the afterlife, albeit after all of them went through (the change into cyborgs, death and change into Revenants) this is less a matter of faith (religion) and more first-hand experiences. And let's not forget that regularly dealing over the centuries with Shang Tsung who steals people's souls on a daily basis makes it really hard to not believe spirits are real.
Also, an interesting matter of Lin Kuei practices that could have a religious/spiritual ground and/or be an example of ancestor worship is the clanâs funeral rites. I donât think we actually saw any Lin Kuei to bury their own (especially after warriorâs failure?) and for sure MK9!Cyrax and Sektor did not bother to take care of Bi-Hanâs remains. However the sources provide examples of Lin Kuei keeping corpses, most likely of their own leaders or warriors.
And so, we could see human remains:
put in two coffins on each side of statue
hidden / kept in a block of ice(?) in chamber of Fallen Lin Kuei in which Frostâs frozen body was also laid, but on the altar
Cyraxâs cyber body was kept and guarded by Sub-Zero (and this is like the only thing that Kuai Liang and Cyber Sektor so far agreed on)
and even Cyber Sektorâs remains, even if just for pragmatic reasons, are kept in what seems to be respectful manner:
It could be just Kuai Liangâs good nature to honor fallen of his clan (Iâm still not sure if Lin Kuei Palace is the new place for Sub-Zeroâs clan or the ancient hideout) but even in MK Conquest TV series, after Grandmaster was killed by then-currently-Sub-Zero, there was the farewell ceremony with clothes on display (cause there was not much left of body after freezing and shattering) while new leader gave the speech promising to punish the guilty.
Which makes me think that Lin Kuei did honor their fallen warriors (especially those exceptional, deserving). Such custom and apparently common belief in soul could also support the ancestor worship - both as some ancient, mythical ancestor(s) connecting warriors into one clan (family) and tradition to follow in the footsteps of forefathers (Bi-Han taking place of his father [old timeline] or grandfather [current timeline] or Kuai Liang taking Bi-Hanâs place as Sub-Zero).
My general conclusion about Lin Kuei is that its members believe in souls, have respect and use of spiritual matters (meditation?) and maybe ancestor worship. Whatever the religious / spiritual practices they have over the centuries, it is not something they will share, as the Lin Kuei by nature are secretive people who keep personal things mostly for themselves. The people that joined the clan (Cyrax and Smoke) maybe kept their old, eventual religious beliefs but overall, Lin Kuei warriors did not fear, care for nor pray to gods. They may respect god (Raiden, Fujin) as a person but not because of their divine nature. And even that would not stop them from criticizing said god. Which is pretty much how Kuai Liang and Raidenâs relationship looks like. Grandmaster is grateful to Thunder God for saving him but he wonât blindly follow his authority.
(Kuai Liang has serious authority issues, hasn't he?)
As for holidays, I canât really see Lin Kuei to follow any specific religious (theistic) special day cause they donât care much for gods in the first place. Unless they worked undercover and needed to act as normal human beings, religious holidays would mean nothing to them. The warriors may however celebrate their mission success, combat mastery or promotion between themselves or in secret, I think. Like, Lin Kuei did forbid friendship because it was considered warriorâs flaw yet we know some members either were blood-related (Kuai Liang, Bi-Han, previous Sub-Zero - father or grandfather, depending on which timeline is correct) or considered each other a family (Kuai Liang and Tomas Vrbada) and most named characters worked in duos so they have both opportunity and knowledge about each other to celebrate important matters. If they managed to remember anything from previous life, that is. Because from ancient to at least Great Kung Laoâs times most(?) adepts were kidnapped from biological families at a really young age (something around 6 years old). And Mythologies: Sub-Zero takes that even further:
Its warriors are chosen at birth to be raised apart from the workings of day to day civilization and are stripped of their former lives. Only the clan knows their existence. Each of them posses certain skills and abilities that set them apart from normal men. These abilities are passed on from generation to generation and honed throughout the experiences of life.
So, celebrating birthdays doesnât sound like happening much, unless those with family around could allow themselves such luxury. The clan may however celebrate the day of becoming a fully trained and sworn warrior? Or the fallen warriors? Who knows.
Also, something worth thinking about: in Mortal Kombat Conquest TV series, when the Grandmaster presented newly appointed Sub-Zero to the rest of the clan, he âcelebratedâ the cryomancer's first official performance as the execution of two men who failed their mission. So, yeah, celebration of something special in (old) Lin Kuei does not necessarily mean anything nice.
(The next part of answer most likely will be focused either on food or architecture / origin of Lin Kuei. Let's hope I will get it written sooner than later)

Administrator Sly Moore conspires against Darth Vader
Administrator Sly Moore has been in Emperor Palpatineâs inner circle when he was still Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. A cunning political figure hailing from the planet Umbara and who is Force-Sensitive, Moore is dangerous, possibly much more so than the Emperorâs other right-hand person, Grand Vizier Mas Amedda.
When Darth Vader was punished by Emperor Palpatine for his side quest of finding out more information about his son, Luke Skywalker, Moore was one of the allies the Emperor ordered to eliminate the former Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. After Ochi of Bestoon, a Sith assassin, thought that he had defeated Vader on the volcanic planet of Mustafar, the Administrator felt that she had to pick up the pieces due to knowing that Vader could not be kept down that easily. After Vader got off Mustafar with Ochi as his prisoner, Moore was on board a Star Destroyer pursuing Vader and sending an entire fleet of TIE Fighters after him. However, the Sith quickly defeated the TIEs thanks to his skills as a pilot, his abilities in the Force, and a giant space creature enroute to the planet Exegol.
After she, Vader, and Ochi witness the Emperorâs true power and his plans involving Exegol, Moore also witnesses the Emperorâs armored enforcer being restored. However, this has the administrator concerned and by the end of âDarth Vader no.13,â she is revealed to have conspired with IG-88 and a secret group of followers to finally kill Vader.
Warning Spoilers Ahead
âStar Wars: Darth Vader no. 14â begins on the Imperial throne world of Coruscant where two Imperial cadets are in awe at how Darth Vader survived his ordeal on Mustafar by just being held together by Separatist droid parts. They comment that Vader is basically unstoppable. As Vader strides triumphantly with his new right hand man Ochi of Bestoon at his side, Administrator Sly Moore is not at all impressed.
Seeing her disappointment, Emperor Palpatine instigates jealousy within the Umbaran when he asks if she is satisfied with Vader being restored to full function and health. Sly admits that she failed to defeat Vader which the Emperor agrees and then chuckles as he walks away from her. To make matters worse, as the Umbara follows the Emperor, Grand Vizier Mas Amedda tells her that she is needed at the Prescreen Department. Moore quickly learns that due to her failure, she has been demoted to Sub-administrator. The Umbaran looks on as Amedda and Palpatine take the turbolift toward the Imperial Palace. Several Imperial officers and stormtroopers look on at the now Sub-administrator Moore.
As I continue to read this series, I continue to praise Greg Pak as one of the many writers who knows how to write Star Wars along with Charles Soule. In this issue, the storyâs main focus is on Sly Moore and the ongoing battle for supremacy within the Emperorâs inner circle. The inner conflict within the Galactic Empire is nothing new in Star Wars. We have seen plenty of Imperials conspire against each other or their allies. For example, there have been several past stories where the Grand Moff Tarkin has traded blows with Darth Vader. In addition, there have been previous comic issues where the Emperor has sent potential new enforcers or apprentices to kill Vader so that he can replace him. Furthermore, there have been other stories in the Star Wars Legends lore, like âShadows of the Empire, '' where Vader has deep animosity for the Emperorâs ally and leader of the Black Sun criminal syndicate, the Falleen Prince Xizor. In this latest âVaderâ issue, Paks narration and dialogue between the characters are a reminder of how the Sith operate with each other and their allies. I also feel that Pakâs inclusion of the subtle infighting within the Emperorâs inner circle is a reminder of the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis with Wise.
While toiling away at the Prescreen Department with two Imperial officers, the now Sub-administrator Moore discovers that a high-ranking Imperial has been given an invitation to attend the auction of the carbonite frozen Han Solo from Crimson Dawn. Moore also hears the name âSkywalkerâ and sees this as a potential opportunity to enact revenge on Darth Vader.
Moore begins to put her plan into motion by heading to the repair block where Vader was fully restored back in âDarth Vader no. 12â so that she can get the schematics on his machine-infused anatomy. Mas Amedda catches her and the two discuss their roles within the Emperorâs inner circle and how they serve the Sith and do not have the power to âindulge in their pleasures.â Sly being sly tells Amedda to pretend that he did not catch her while she, unbeknownst to the Grand Vizier, creates a holodisk containing the schematics on Vaderâs anatomy.
It is here that we learn how bounty hunter assassin droid IG-88 was able to track down Vader and temporarily have the upper hand on him during their fight in the last issue. It was Moore and her fellow conspirators who provided the assassin droid and his army of droids with the disk.
Toward the end of the comic, we are left off at the part where IG-88 meets with Moore and her followers. The droid tries to terminate his bounty contract since Vader defeated him during their last encounter. Much to Mooreâs horror, Vader sneaks behind IG-88 and slices the droid with his crimson-colored lightsaber. Moore and her followers flee from the Sith Lord while they try to kill him. Moore also tries using the same mechanism IG-88 used to defeat Vader but ultimately, Vader overpowers her.
With no choice and admitting defeat, the Umbaran bargains with Vader by mentioning the Crimson Dawn invitation to the auction of Han Solo and also how Luke (who would not be far behind to rescue the smuggler) could potentially kill Vader. Sly makes a promise with the Sith Lord to purchase Solo for Vader so that the Sith could not only take Solo but also potentially fight Luke. The two come to a compromise on the plan. However, at the auction, things go south when Jabba the Hutt and his fellow Hutt, Bokku (who has allied with Vader) outbid Sly. The administrator is puzzled as to why Bokku, who is allied with Vader, is bidding against her. Ochi responds that it is the Huttâs way to humiliate her and himself which in turn would expose her weakness to the Emperor.The assassin further explains that although Sly was very power with uniting her allies to defeat Vader, the Sith Lord is too powerful to let that happen. The end of this issue leaves off toward where âWar of the Bounty Hunters no. 2â ended but with Vader inviting himself to the auction by force choking several Crimson Dawn guards.
As I mentioned before, the character of Administrator Sly Moore is very dangerous and shrewd. Greg Pak brought this character to life. Before the âVaderâ comic, Moore was just a character who stood on the sidelines with a brooding expression in the âStar Warsâ prequel films. Pakâs take on Sly Moore is a high ranking Imperial official who is an opportunist and a quick study. She is willing to do whatever it takes when an opening presents itself to execute her plan. She also is no push over when it comes to executing that plan by mentioning Luke Skywalker being the only person who could kill Vader and take his place. This shows that she is as much of a manipulator as the Emperor. In the end of the day, it doesn't matter who dies in the fight between Vader and Luke (who she may or may not know are father and son). One way or another, whoever dies, she would probably go for the killing bow.
I also like the direction Vader is going in this arc also. Yes, he knows that Luke is his son however, it seems that the Emperor wants to use that in order for him to have one less Skywalker to worry about. The Emperor is hell bent on manipulating Vader to kill Luke or vice versa since having an enforcer strong in the Force would serve his agenda. Especially if the Emperor was able to seduce someone as powerful as Anakin to the Dark Side. It will be interesting to see if Vader really is set on killing Luke or if this is just a ruse to get the Emperor off his scent of his own plans which involve having his son rule at his side.
The art by Raffaele Lenco and the coloring by Jason Keith played just as huge of a role as Pakâs writing did in bringing Sly Moore to life. The drawings of Sly Moore show the stark differences between her time as administrator in the Galactic Republic to her time as administrator for the Empire. When she was administrator for the Republic, she was wearing a silver, or lighter, gown while under the Empire, she was wearing an all black short trench coat with black slacks and boots. In addition to her clothing, Mooreâs facial features are further darkened and chiseled, possibly to show her age throughout the 23-years she has been in service to Palpatine. But I also think that those additional lines and shading on her face make her far more brooding than she did in the prequel films.
Overall, the âWar of the Bounty Huntersâ arc has been the blockbuster of the summer that has rocked the Skywalker Saga in the Disney era. There hasnât been such an arc since the Shadows of the Empire that has changed the landscape and expanded the Star Wars Universe. With the inclusion of Han Soloâs ex girlfriend Qiâra, from âSolo: A Star Wars Story,â pulling the strings by gathering all entities in the galaxy, there is no way that it would be a âStar Warsâ blockbuster without Darth Vader. Greg Pakâs post âEmpire Strikes Backâ Vader is ruthless, determined, and cold-blooded. From what I read, he knows that he cannot take on the Emperor alone but he also knows that Luke could very well defeat him. With that, Vader has no choice but to kill Luke or at least defeat him enough so that he could have one less potentially powerful enemy to worry about. Or, as I mentioned before, Vader is likely playing possum and secretly wants to have Luke at his side (which he actually does) so that they can overthrow the Emperor.

my favourite mtg character
Innistrad 3 spoilers are in full swing, and with the return of Liesa (which is baffling lorewise) and the new Sigarda, Angels are coming to mind for a lot of Magic players. And so it was that this morning, immediately after having read, digested, and theorycrafted said new Liesa that I got to thinking that I should probably write this post Iâve had in mind for a while.
Magicâs lore has a lot of characters at this point, both cooky and cool, comic and tragic. Angels often lean most heavily towards the latter, a result of the religious implications and iconic status of the tribe overall. But today, Iâd like to talk about my favourite character in all of Magic, one who, despite being an angel, strikes more a balance between those two archetypes.
Sheâs an Angel and a Legend, but sheâs no Mythic powerhouse. Sheâs a cool commander, but not overpowered enough to terrorize the table. Sheâs in one of my favourite colour combinations, one known for Angel decks, but she surpasses the issues a lot of those decks have. Her name is Tiana, and sheâs cute and I like her a lot.
Tiana first shows up in Dominariaâs 3rd story article, the creatively named Return to Dominaria: Episode 3. This is not the start of her story, however, and so Iâm not going to start there. Rather, her backstory begins one Episode later, starting quite literally with her initial thoughts upon coming into existence.
Angels are kind of a funny thing in Magic lore, at least on Dominaria. Theyâre supposed to be manifestations of pure White Mana- as in, if you gave a bunch of white mana a face, youâd end up with an angel, and basically no matter how much you messed with it beforehand youâd still end up with an angel in the end. Angels on Dominaria are manifested from the prayers of the people, and come with a lifelong purpose- to protect, and to fight the enemies of evil. This is what Tiana assumes her job is going to be literally from the moment she starts to exist, and sheâs filled with the glorious purpose of this design.
This is not what her job is going to be.
Instead, Lyra Dawnbringer, pretty much the boss of the angels on the plane, informs her that sheâs instead a Guardian Angel. Thatâs fine, weâre still on the protection angle, sounds great- oh so sheâs guarding the Great Machine. Which is an irrigation system. Yeah, sure, okay. Apparently the mortals of the plane were so devoted to hoping to whatever gods theyâre fond of that this thing works that the energies of the plane made an angel to guard it. Not the most glamorous job to have in your sublime existence, but it still seems pretty important, so sure! Why not. Tiana is a little disappointed, but sheâs not about to turn around on the literal reason she exists. She gets over it a little, gets suited up, and gets ready to fly to her machine of residence.
The Great Machine is already destroyed when she gets there. Razed to the ground, workers dead to a man, at the hands of the Cabal.
Iâd like to bring up quickly, that while Magic story has always been hit or miss, and more miss than hit, the Dominaria story is actively quite good. Like, not just for Magic, just generally a series of really solid stories. Authors often struggle under the weight and restrictions that this kind of writing presents, but Martha Wells does an excellent job making these characters actually pop, even as minor as most of them are.
Tiana eventually finds herself as the chief engineer for the rebuilt Weatherlight, the legendary skyship that serves as the centre for much of 90s Magic Story, and whose reassembly and restaffing is much of the story of the new set. It turns out that a combination of being a guardian angel for a machine, having effectively nothing to do with an immortal life, and being a massive fucking nerd make her perfect for the job. The entire Weatherlight crew are in some way unusual but that style of character teambuilding is usually really great.

And, as a result, Tianaâs character design is a standout apart from the majority of Magicâs angels. Sheâs kind of like Rosie the Riveter (as the above fanart alludes), the kind of person to be covered in grease stains and wearing overalls than the usual flowing robes and dresses. She wields a spanner just as often as a sword, and actively involves herself in the nitty-gritty rather than watch on from above. In a word, sheâs practical.
For how little time she spends in the spotlight, they really do fit a lot of character into Tianaâs package. Her story is one of loss, of holding on hope to the status quo, and learning to move past it when the time comes. Her magically, spiritually ingrained purpose in life is null from the get-go, and the following lack of direction is something I find extremely relatable. Sheâs also understandably naĂŻve, considering sheâs technically extremely young, a trait which is charming when combined with her literal god-given knowledge of history and, eventually, mechanics.
But of course, Tiana is not just a character in a story, but also a functional game piece made of cardboard and ink. Part of the design of Dominaria as a set was a focus on stories and legends, both of the planeâs (and gameâs) past and the new characters of the present, as represented by the Historic mechanic and the introduction of the first Uncommon Legendary Creatures since Kamigawa block. For the set, all 10 2-colour pairs got one new Legendary character to build around for both Commander and Draft, with Tiana representing the Red/White Auras/Equipment archetype that supplemented the focus on artifacts that Historic provided. Tianaâs place in draft was a little awkward, seeing as her main ability rarely comes up, but sheâs an incredibly interesting card to work with in the EDH format.
Sheâs been much overshadowed by other cards like Feather at this point, but Tiana is still a reasonably popular Boros commander at 209 decks (at time of writing). Itâs a number that screams âunderratedâ more than anything. Sheâs one of those excellent designs that lets you use cards that no other deck would possibly want- in this case, cards like Mortal Obstinacy or Capashen Standard, and turn them into powerful value engines. Her one key ability is just such a cool line of text, and one that perfectly suits her character- she fixes that which ends up broken and returns them somewhere safe. It is kind of a shame there arenât that many cards to make her work, but Iâm more than willing to try to do it.

But thatâs pretty much it. Tiana, Shipâs Caretaker is a card and a character I really, deeply enjoy, as sheâs both relatable and fun and funny and interesting. With as iffy as Magic plotlines tend to be, itâs kind of a surprise for a character to be so resonant, especially considering what recent offerings have looked like. Sheâs the coolest Angel in the game, and I will fight the Avacyn/Akroma stans on that one.

A character page for what is, at its core, something of another au for my main, Astor, buttt... itâs basically bc one day I had a random bought of inspiration and followed through on âwhat if I came up with a deer-like race for XIVâ and... then I spent like two hours making lore for them and listening to whitetail deer noises on YouTube. So! Heâs different enough to warrant his own lil page! ^.^ I will try to cover enough of this theoretical lore that things make sense, but hopefully without going... ridiculously overboard and keeping you here for hours over a race of my own brainworms. xD
BASICS ---
Name: Brooke, technically like the water feature âbrook,â but, somewhere along the line, someone thought it was spelled with an âeâ like the more common rendition of the name, and he did not have enough of an understanding of the written Eorzean Common Tongue to know the difference.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE ---
Hair: Long, falling down about his mid-shoulders when worn loosely and dark brown. Typically worn with at least one braid, and often pulled back in some sort of fashion. Occasionally braids feathers or flowers into it.
Eyes: A pale crystal blue, almost gray. Often wide, curious, and warm.
Height: 5 fulms, 10 ilms, not accounting for a full grown set of antlers.
Build: Lithe, lean, and long in the legs - all traits rather common among his race. As a fully mature adult, Brooke generally grows in a full antler set featuring an average of 4 points that typically form a generally crescent moon-like shape. The typical adult male Dryad will grow anywhere from 4-6 points, while a female will grow 2-4.
Distinguishing Marks: Much of Brooke is rather... distinguishing, given the rarity of his people to the rest of Eorzea. They are generally a reclusive people, living deep within the woods and mountains from the land, migrating occasionally with the season and food supply, but rarely actually leaving. Given such, it wasnât until prior to the Calamity that Brooke ventured beyond the bounds of his wooded home deep in the Shroud at the behest of his herd that he came into contact with the outside world. Given the antlers and the fluffy ears and tail, most... didnât exactly greet him with kindness. He was odd and unlike anyone else most had seen. The Calamity has pushed their survivors from their homes and more into the light, but theyâre still a relatively unknown factor. Many regarded him initially with the same judgements and mistrust afforded the beast tribes.
Outside of the physical denotations of his race, the only other marks one might occasionally find that could be helpful are the paints he still tries to find some time to don in honor of his kin and ancestors. Life as an adventurer has taken him further and further from his roots, but no further from his respect for their traditions.
PERSONAL ---
Profession: Brooke initially left his herd, sent by their leader, to act as an emissary to the nation of Gridania in the days leading up to the Calamity. While the details of the time after Cartenau are yet fuzzy to him, he had not intended to abandon his post in the Calamityâs wake. In the world that remains, however, he is unable to ascertain whether any of his herd survived. By lucky chance, he has fallen in with the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, lending his strength and mixed arcane knowledge to their fight for peace.
Main Job: Brooke and his people are something of an enigma by standard definitions of magical practice. They are gifted in a wide variety of arts, and their semi-nomadic nature has brought them into contact with various remnants of ages past. In Brookeâs case, the closest standard classification may be Red Magic, as he possesses an affinity with a wide variety of skills typically associated with both White and Black Magic, though, unlike the duelists of the Red, Brooke still prefers to focus his energies through a staff or scepter than a blade.
Hobbies: Gathering is more a standard survival skill of his people than a hobby, so he would hesitate to classify his botanical knowledge and pursuits as such. Instead, he would much prefer to count his reading as his favorite one - particularly into history and prevalent folklore and tales. In his role as emissary, he sought understanding between his people and those sharing the Twelveswood with them, even if they had been doing so unwittingly. Thus, it was only natural he needed to seek an understanding of their customs as well as shed some light on his own. He finds the telling of history and belief systems fascinating, marveling at the many differences and nuances to be found within them.
Languages: Though Brooke possesses the Echo, he still struggles with languages, at times. He has steadily grasped a more firm understanding of the Eorzean Common Tongue, but it would not be wrong to say his Echo granted him a better understanding of the language and intentions of creatures, beasts, and elements than any language of man.
Residence: At times, it is still difficult to feel settled among civilization, but his efforts and work with the Scions have afforded him the security of a small residence within the protection of Gridania. At least the more seasoned adventurers arenât so prone to gawping at his unusual appearance.
Birthplace: His herd lived somewhere deep within the Twelveswood. After the destruction reigned down by Bahamut though, he has found more malms of it unfamiliar to him than ever, and he cannot even be certain they survived - much less that their home may have.
Religion: Dryads believe in something one might call spirts, more than any gods. They revere natural elements such as wind, water, and earth and pay a deep respect to the balance of these things. Taking more than one needs and reckless destruction are considered sacrilegious to them. They host celebrations for each season, each having a representative and associated elemental spirits of focus - the closest one might find to a pantheon of gods in their beliefs. This is something he has held fast to even in the face of their many adventures.

Curious, warm, and soft-spoken, Brooke has a quiet love for life that some might find a little naĂŻve. Heâs a deeply passionate individual that does not often find a reason to hide the way he feels. He believes strongly in such things as the beauty of a star-dappled sky or a color-changing sunset. He feels strongly about preserving the ways of his people, finding a nostalgic familiarity in them as he uncovers the world beyond the wood. It has been daunting, at times.
But curiosity has kept spurring him forward. Seeing marvels like airships and linkpearls up close are strange, sometimes terrifying, but incredible experiences.
He endeavors to remain honest to himself and true to his beliefs. He does not believe in turning others away over superficial differences. If one is in need, that should be enough. Where they are from or what creed they follow should not restrict them from aid. It might make him something of an idealist, but if it is foolish to believe in and want such things, then he would gladly be a fool. He tries his best to remain willing to learn, and finds joy in understanding and sharing. Heâd gladly listen to someone tell stories for hours, if it would make them happy.
ABOUT --
Born and raised with his herd in the secluded depths of the Twelveswood, Brooke thought and new little of the world beyond the wooded reaches of their herd until he was well along to becoming a young adult. In the brewing chaos of looming calamity, their leader bid him go forth to their neighbors of the wood in Gridania in an attempt to reach an understanding and mutual aid. Such levels of destruction would doom them all, regardless, and she bid them not remain idle and wait for the coming darkness.
The troubling times would provide their own draws and setbacks to opening a dialogue with the Gridanians and their Seedseers, but, ultimately, Brooke would succeed in at least opening these discussions, revealing the Dryadsâ presence within Eorzea with certainty and agreeing to aid in the developing struggles against the Garlean Empire.
What, exactly, followed is, as many others have described, something of a blur. The only certainty of the matter was that it left the young Dryad stranded alone in a wholly new and twisted realm that was all just... a bit funny. Familiar in ways... Entirely not in others.
He may just have ran afoul of a little cult. Yâknow. Nothing major. Definitely not a voidsent interested in aether. Definitely not his. Or... perhaps he did. And perhaps heâs quite lucky he met an adventurer not keen on letting cultists lurk about in underground tombs or let unsuspecting strangers get turned into voidsent treats. Quite lucky, that! But... allâs well that ends well, right..?
With a little to be desired for a solid sense of direction and purpose, Brooke found himself once again woven into a greater tapestry of fate than he could have ever predicted. There were, thankfully, a few... passingly familiar faces along the way, it seemed, but still little in the way of ascertaining the fate of those he had left behind, grown up with.
But there was still their hope - hope for a better future, for a way forward, the dawn of another day they could enjoy and share with their loved ones. That had always been worth fighting for, so fight for it, he would.

REVIEW // Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

"For these were not ordinary books the libraries kept. They were knowledge, given life. Wisdom, given voice. They sang when starlight streamed through the libraryâs windows. They felt pain and suffered heartbreak. Sometimes they were sinister, grotesqueâbut so was the world outside. And that made the world no less worth fighting for, because wherever there was darkness, there was also so much light."
I really enjoyed Rogerson's fluffy romance in An Enchantment of Ravens, so I thought I would give this other fantasy stand-alone of hers a shot. All in all, I just could not bring myself to care for the protagonist and the romance. I think I had so much fun with An Enchantment of Ravens because both Rook and Isobel were so likable individually, their banter was funny, and the romance was the central focus of the story. I'll be the first to admit there was really nothing in the way of world-building or lore in that story, but it never took itself too seriously or tried to be some sort of fantasy epic, and the author achieved what she had set out to do. Sorcery of Thorns lacks that charismatic energy that carried its sister novel. The prose is way to descriptive at times, to the point where it made me roll my eyes. Elisabeth is the embodiment of the Mary Sue trope-she is disheveled and homely, but still beautiful. She is naive and clumsy, but immediately masters the sword and manages to unravel a massive conspiracy that no one else saw coming. She makes the capital's notorious rake fall in love with her within days of meeting her.

Everything that happens in this story is so infuriatingly convenient. Of course, a lot of stories, especially in fantasy, require a certain amount of suspension of disbelief, but this book really took that notion too far. Elisabeth manages to evade death at every turn, mostly by fainting or pretending to faint. The story also seems to skirt around consequences constantly, letting heavily injured characters heal quickly for the sake of the plot. When (SPOILER) Silas was defeated, I legitimately thought that Rogerson would take the story in a completely different direction, forcing Thorn to continue with no sorcery. What would this mean for his relationship with Elisabeth, seeing as she held such a strong prejudice against sorcerers? What about his self-worth? As someone who comes from a long line of sorcerers and has been one since he was 12, this was bound to affect how he viewed his purpose in society. We also read shortly before that the Thorn line holds crucial power for the safety of the kingdom-what would happen now that it was gone? How would they approach the world-ending threat without Thorn's sorcery?
But no. Silas is simply immediately summoned again and we are right back where we started. No harm, no foul.
Speaking of coincidences, are you seriously trying to tell me that no one, in the span of centuries, noticed that the libraries were arranged in a PENTAGON? The same shape used to SUMMON DEMONS?? Do they not have maps? Or basic critical thinking skills? (SPOILER END)
Overall, I was incredibly disappointed in this book, especially since Rogerson had provided such a fun read in her debut novel. Here's hoping Vespertine is more to my liking!

5e Yone, the Unforgotten build (League of Legends)

GOALS
Asakana - Trust me as a Kayn main Iâm salty that we have another half-demon anime boy who isnât even Darkin. But we still need a mask of many demonic faces.
Three swift strikes... - âBrother, why did Elder Souma let you have two swords?â Regardless weâll need two swords for many slashes.
Death is like the wind - Yone is dead except not really, but heâs still capable of some astral projection to fight his foes from a distance.
RACE
Yone may have been human but with a demon fusing to him that gives him just enough infernal blood to be a Tiefling! As a Tiefling your Charisma score increases by 2 and your Intelligence score increases by 1. Your Hellish Resistance grants you resistance to fire damage, and Infernal Legacy grants you a few innate spells which Iâll cover in the build.
ABILITY SCORES
15; DEXTERITY - Youâre an anime sword boy who was second best only to your brother who is the most anime sword boy who ever did swing an anime sword.
14; CHARISMA - As the more level-headed brother you had to do most of the talking. Remember that Charisma is strength of personality; not raw attractiveness. (Though you certainly have that going for you too.)
13; INTELLIGENCE - A master swordsman needs to study the art of war, which is more theory and less art. (Feel free to set your CON higher instead if you want more health.)
12; WISDOM - Yasuoâs the hothead and youâre the calm one. Not calm enough not to try to kill your brother, and definitely not calm enough to not be a target for Asakana.
10; CONSTITUTION - You died before, and dying generally means you werenât that sturdy to begin with.
8; STRENGTH - Being cut down by the legendary wind technique and then brought back from the dead doesnât spell a good workout routine. Yeah Yone has big pecs but put simply we need everything else more.
BACKGROUND
You had a background before, but unfortunately dead men tell no tales. You are a Haunted One brought back to life to hunt the creatures of the night. You can choose two skills from the Haunted One list to be proficient in: Investigation will help you find any stray Asakana, and depending on if your definition of emotional demons are Religion or Arcana you can pick either of those for your second skill. (Arcana is probably going to be more useful though.)
As a Haunted One people can easily see into your Heart of Darkness, easily telling that youâve faced unimaginable horrors in your past. No shit you have a demon mask permanently attached to your face. Regardless commoners will be willing to aid you as much as possible unless youâve shown yourself to be openly hostile, such as throwing their promo games.
You also learn two languages of your choice: one of which must be Exotic but since you already know Infernal as a Tiefling Sylvan would be good to talk to the spirits in a dating sim. For your other language Elvish seems fitting for Ionia.

THE PATH BUILD
LEVEL 1 - ROGUE 1
Perhaps not the most fitting for the honorable brother, but being a Rogue will give us the skill to strike swiftly. As well as more skills in general! Take Perception and Insight to find Asakana, Acrobatics to fight them, and Intimidation to strike fear into their hearts. You also get Expertise in two skills your proficient in: Investigation and Perception would help further with finding Asakana.
When you find the Asakana you can strike it down with Sneak Attack. If you have Advantage on an attack roll or are attacking an enemy within 5 feet of an ally you can do an extra d6 of damage. Despite the name âsneak attackâ you donât actually have to sneak, but you do need to use a Finesse weapon such as a short sword. Yes your swords arenât exactly âshortâ but for the purposes of dual wielding itâs the best youâll get.
And after striking the demon down you might need to speak its true name in Thievesâ Cant. Thatâs not what Thievesâ Cant is? Well regardless itâs a code language shared among rogues; perhaps you picked it up from the Navori? At least you can shout the demonâs name loud and proud as you seal it away thanks to Tiefling Thaumaturgy, along with all other sorts of little supernatural effects I suggest reading into.
LEVEL 2 - ROGUE 2
At level 2 Rogues get Cunning Action to Dash, Disengage, or Hide as a bonus action. Hiding isnât very in-character but being able to move swiftly across the battlefield is key for the twin blade technique. Unfortunately attacking with a twin blade also requires your bonus action, so pace your movements accordingly.
LEVEL 3 - ROGUE 3
Level 3 Rogues get to choose their Martial Archetype and in order to strike swift and true youâre going to want to play a Swashbuckler. Swashbucklers get Fancy Footwork to be able to slip away from enemies they attacked without provoking opportunity attacks, even if they miss.
Additionally they get Rakish Audacity which ironically provides two benefits: for one you get to add your Charisma modifier to your initiate, but you can also activate your sneak attack if you strike an enemy in melee with no other enemies nearby. Single the demon out and cut them down now that your Sneak Attack does 2d6 damage!
And finally you can cast Hellish Rebuke at second level as a reaction once per long rest thanks to Infernal Legacy. Strike a ganking lust demon with a big burst of âBEGONE THOTâ damage!
LEVEL 4 - FIGHTER 1
Adding a quick level in Fighter because Yone was professionally trained, so a Fighting Style would be good to have. Naturally weâll be going for Two-Weapon Fighting to fight with twin blades. You also get Second Wind to heal for a d10 plus your Fighter level once per short rest for a quick Corrupting Pot in lane.
But unfortunately now weâre going to have to die...

LEVEL 5 - WARLOCK 1
Just kidding of course because itâs ya boii coming back with the WARLOCK LEVELS! You can choose your Warlock Patron straight at level 1 and as someone who came back from the dead you may think weâll be going for the Undying patron right? Well thatâs where youâre dead wrong because weâre going for a pact with a Fiend.
Why Fiend Patron? - Along with the lore reasons (not all Warlock pacts have to be made on good terms) Pact of the Fiend gives us Dark Oneâs Blessing to recreate the shield from Spirit Cleave (W), and Burning Hands also gives us an easy-to-use cone spell to recreate a cone-shaped cleave.
Why not Undying? - Undying has a pseudo-support role and a heavy focus on not dying, neither of which Yone does in-game.
Why not Hexblade? - We need at least 12 levels in Warlock for an invocation, and that means weâd be getting Accursed Specter from Hexblade. Yone doesnât summon spirits to fight for him and while I could normally get past that bit of flavor fail (as both Hexbladeâs Curse and Armor of Hexes actually make a lot of sense for Yone) Fiend made a lot more sense given that he literally gets his powers from a demon. A DEX build also allows you to be shirtless in Ionia.
Pact of the Fiend Warlocks have the Dark Oneâs Blessing, granting them temporary hitpoints equal to their Charisma modifier and their Warlock level when they down an enemy for some spiritual shielding.
Additionally Warlocks gain access to Pact Magic. You learn two cantrips from the Warlock list: Minor Illusion creates a sound or small visual you can use to trick an Asakana into falling for a trap. And Toll the Dead isnât Eldritch Blast! Excluding the war crimes I just committed by not putting Eldritch Blast on a Warlock (youâre going to be using your swords most of the time anyways get over it itâs one spell) Toll the Dead forces the enemy to make a Wisdom save or take a d8 Necrotic damage, or a d12 Necrotic if theyâre injured, making it a great finishing blow after using Soul Unbound.
You can also learn two first level spells: Burning Hands forces enemies to make a Dexterity saving throw or be Spirit Cleaved for 3d6 fire damage. If you want to mark an enemy for Soul Unbound however Hex will let you do an extra d6 of necrotic damage every hit, and give an enemy disadvantage on skill checks related to an ability score of your choice. You can also cast the Darkness spell once per long rest as a Tiefling, blinding everyone in the 20 foot sphere of darkness. If only you could see through it...
LEVEL 6 - WARLOCK 2
Second level Warlocks get Eldritch Invocations and we actually wonât be taking the one that helps us see in the dark. We will however be taking Armor of Shadows to let us cast Mage Armor at will and go shirtless in Ionia. Your second invocation will remain empty for now.
You can also add another spell to your repertoire and Protection from Evil and Good will help a lot with fighting Asakana. A creature blessed by the spell is attacked with disadvantage by aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead. Additionally they canât be charmed, frightened, or possessed by them. If theyâre already debuffed by these types of enemies they have advantage on future saving throws against them. Once you know the truth of Asakana there is no reason to fear them... or some other edgy one liner.
LEVEL 7 - WARLOCK 3
Third level Warlocks get their Pact Boon and hey look itâs Pact of the Blade. You can create a magic weapon in your hand as an action. The weapon counts as being magical to overcome armadillos who say âokayâ a lot. And you know that Invocation I told you to hold off on? Improved Pact Weapon will let you do more damage with the blade of the Asakana. If you want to remain in character Iâd suggest only attacking with your pact weapon in your offhand, but remember that Two-Weapon Fighting takes your Bonus Action so feel free to hit hard and then run if needed.
You can also now cast second level spells like Misty Step for some sick plays with Flash.
LEVEL 8 - WARLOCK 4
Fourth level Warlocks finally get an Ability Score Improvement: increase your Dexterity by 2 for swifter and deadlier strikes with your twin blades. Could we take a feat? Yeah, but we wonât.
You also learn another cantrip at this level on top of another spell. For your cantrip Prestidigitation will further your ability to cast small spiritual magic, and for your spell of choice we already got flash so how about Ray of Enfeeblement for Exhaust? Thereâs a lot of other great options though: Blindness / Deafness from the Fiend list is also a great choice.
LEVEL 9 - FIGHTER 2
Second level Fighters get Action Surge, allowing them to take one additional action on their turn. Right now that only means one extra sword swing but you can cast a spell after you attack!
LEVEL 10 - FIGHTER 3
At level 3 Fighters can choose their Martial Archetype and to unbind oneâs soul you must travel to the world of Wildemount for the Echo Knight subclass. Iâve already made a few Echo Knights before on this sub so Iâm going to give the cliffnotes version of a class that has quite a long ability description at level 3 for Manifest Echo:
You can summon your soul within 15 feet of you as a bonus action.
You can move your soul up to 30 feet for free on your turn.
Your soul canât be more than 30 feet away from you by the end of your turn, or else it disappears. (Goes back to your body)
Your soul has an AC of 14 + proficiency and 1 hitpoint.
Itâs immune to all conditions and uses your saving throws.
You can swap places with your soul using 15 feet of movement (regardless of the distance between you two.)
When you attack you can make the attack come from your soul instead.
Your soul can opportunity attack (using your reaction.)
Additionally Unleash Incarnation will let you attack an extra time from your soulâs location on your turn. You can use it a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier but your CON mod is currently zero. Thankfully you can use it a minimum of one time before finishing a long rest.

LEVEL 11 - FIGHTER 4
Fourth level Fighters get an Ability Score Improvement: invest further in Dexterity for 19 DEX and all the benefits that provides.
LEVEL 12 - FIGHTER 5
5th level Fighters get an Extra Attack, letting them attack twice with their main action. This means that with your bonus action you can attack three times in a round! Now would also probably be a good time to put the Asakanaâs blade in your main hand instead of trying to work around your fancy passive.
LEVEL 13 - WARLOCK 5
Itâs straight down Warlock now to become one with the Asakana we wear as a mask. Level 5 Warlocks get another Invocation and it wouldnât be Pact of the Blade if we didnât take both Improved Pact Weapon and Eldritch Smite! Pretend to be a Paladin by turning a spell slot into more sword damage and pretend to be your brother by knocking people over when you do so!
You can also learn another spell like Gaseous Form to turn into petals on the wind. Additionally Hex is probably wearing away its welcome by this point so Iâd suggest taking Hold Person instead to CC-chain a foe to death.
LEVEL 14 - WARLOCK 6
6th level Fiend Warlocks get Dark Oneâs Own Luck, letting them add a d10 to an ability check or saving throw once per short or long rest. I consider this less you being âluckyâ and more you going all out just this once.
You can also learn another spell from the Warlock list such as Spirit Shroud from Unearthed Arcana to give nearby enemies a Randuin's Omen while you cut them down.
LEVEL 15 - WARLOCK 7
7th level Warlocks get another Invocation and while there are plenty to choose from itâs only fair for the man who collects masks of many faces to get a Mask of Many Faces, allowing you to cast Disguise Self at will! Is this mostly done for flavor and is it a bit late to get Disguise Self? Yes but itâs still a very good spell to have.
And you can learn a 4th level spell like Fire Shield from the Fiend List. You can make a Fire Shield for resistance to Cold damage or a Cold Shield to resist Fire damage which you already resist. But regardless of your choice anyone who hits you with a melee attack for the duration will take 2d8 damage of either Fire (if you chose the Fire Shield) or Cold (if you chose the other.)
Also Iâd perhaps suggest replacing Misty Step with Dimension Door? Sure Dimension Door takes a full action (while Misty Step takes a bonus action) but Dimension Door has a 500 foot range which will never not be useful! Teleport can be just as useful as Flash you know.
LEVEL 16 - WARLOCK 8
8th level Warlocks get another Ability Score Improvement: put one into Dexterity and the other one into... yeah Charisma. You also could learn another spell but none of these really interest me so I suggest holding off on it for now.

LEVEL 17 - WARLOCK 9
9th level Warlocks get another Invocation, and while again thereâs plenty to choose from we strive for accuracy here so how about some spiritual levitation? Ascendant Step lets you cast Levitate on yourself without using a spell slot or material components, so you can float towards a wise old man who definitely isnât an Asakana in disguise.
But most importantly you now gain access to 5th level spells! Hallow is a big spell with a lot of effects, a 1000 gold cost, and a 24 hour casting time but itâs the ultimate way to protect an area from Asakana! To seal the fate of your foes Synaptic Static forces an intelligence saving throw on all enemies in an AoE to try to avoid massive damage along with a disorientation effect that tends to come with being knocked up into the air by a tornado.
LEVEL 18 - WARLOCK 10
10th level Fiend Warlocks get Fiendish Resilience, allowing them to resist one type of damage of their choosing. They can swap the resistance out on a short or long rest but damage from magic weapons or silvered weapons ignores this resistance, so probably better just to resist wind magic (Thunder damage) in general instead of specifically resisting a magic wind sword.
Additionally while you wonât learn any more Warlock spells you do get your final cantrip: for some more minor spirit projection how about Mage Hand to grab things within 30 feet and bring them to you?
LEVEL 19 - WARLOCK 11
11th level Warlocks get Mystic Arcanum, which are like regular spell slots which only come back after a long rest because youâre no longer special. Regardless if you want to harness the wind technique look no further than Investiture of Wind Stone, because the rock spell actually lets you knock people over.
Regardless until the spell ends you have resistance to nonmagical slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning, you can move across difficult terrain without spending additional movement, you can move through terrain without spending extra movement (but canât end your turn there), and you can spend your action to try to knock everyone near you over with some basic wind techniques.
Yes there are better spells to take (even in the Investiture spell line, such as the genuine Investiture of Wind which would let you fly as well as block projectiles with a wind wall of your own) but youâre not your brother. Youâre a simple, practical stone who gets the job done. Or you can be a wandering poet: make your own Yone - you donât follow this build point-for-point.
You also apparently get another spell because Mystic Arcanum doesnât count as a spell? Hold Monster is like Hold Person but it works against everything at the mere cost of a much higher spell slot, meaning that you can only affect one creature with parallelization but that should be more than enough for your little brother to get the job done and flash his fancy blue crest afterwards. You do have three spell slots now after all.
LEVEL 20 - WARLOCK 12
12th level Warlocks get our final Ability Score Improvement and... ugh. As much as I want to do something fun I have to accept the fact that Charisma will help us more, so you may as well grab the Resilient Feat with Charisma for better saving throws and a higher Charisma mod.
But that Charisma mod is going to get a lot of use since now you can take the Lifedrinker invocation which grants the Asakanaâs blade Necrotic damage equal to your Charisma modifier! Thatâs a lot of damage? How much damage? Well...
FINAL BUILD
PROS
One to cut, one to seal - Letâs do the math for how much damage you do with your swords every round: two strikes from the Asakanaâs blade (d6 + 6 slashing + 4 necrotic), one from your regular sword (d6 + 5), and sneak attack damage (2d6) for a total of... 5d6 + 25 damage (8 of it being Necrotic and the rest being Slashing) every round. Not to mention Eldritch Smites in a pinch and a large assortment of spells.
Fear, once named, controls no one - You are also incredibly elusive with 18 AC and strong saving throws. Swashbuckler lets you get into the fight fast and get out before your enemy has a chance to react, and cunning actions let you weave around the battlefield as you see fit. To top it off Echo Knight levels let you attack your foes without even being near them! "Cross the veil!"
Wear a mask long enough, and you forget the face beneath - You have a great deal of out-of-combat utility too. Language proficiencies (along with Thievesâ Cant), skill proficiencies (including expertise in two very important skills 23 passive perception, anyone?) Thievesâ Tools, several utility spells which you can cast pretty much at will, not to mention the utility of near-infinite teleportation and flat out infinite levitation.
CONS
Blink, and you'll miss your own death - Between two-weapon fighting, cunning action, and interactions with your echo thereâs such a thing as too many bonus actions.
Do not wish to hide behind masks - Thereâs also such a thing as being too elusive. Swashbuckler gives you plenty of mobility as does Echo Knight, but putting them together means that youâll be everywhere at once.
Are you here to usher me back? - Multiclassing a spellsword means that you miss out on some vital ability score increases. This means your Charisma isnât topped off, the saving throws you arenât proficient in are subpar at best, and your health is just barely over the Power Word Kill threshold.
But a hunter with many weapons will always have the right one to catch its prey. Lure out the Asakana and strike them down. Just remember that even if you alone can stop the demonic plague you donât have to work alone. Your brother may have struck you down but if you learn to forgive the Asakana will be a lot weaker. "Long before blades and sorcery are needed, words... can save a soul."

How strictly do you follow canon?
   it depends entirely on the person / character iâm writing and what verse theyâre in. when someone approaches me and doesnât specify a verse i give them main verse (ff7r) and follow canon as closely as iâd like. but most of my threads diverge from canon for exploration or other purposes. iâm not concerned with how close to canon my aerith is ------obviously iâd like people to hear her voice when i have her speak, or see her performing the actions i have her commit to but iâd also like this interpretation to be my own. so when someone reads a piece of my writing they say oh yes, thatâs kayâs aerith definitely.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutual. Â
   i could make an entire post about all of the things i love about aerith gainsborough on its own, so iâll try not to let this be too rambly.
   she is such a three-dimensional character and she always has been. people expect just to meet the damsel in distress, to rely on cloud and company to help her out at every twist and turn. square even did a good job selling her appearance: soft pinks, gentle features, and when she was given a voice actor the first few times they always went the route of someone who had a lighter lilt. to the first glance she is very much all of those things. except itâs not all she is.
   aerith wears masks to cover the horrendous things that happened to her as a child: experimentation, the shocking loss of her mother after escaping it, crushing loneliness, an awareness that she was different and nobody around who understood the properties of that difference to explain it to her in a way that didnât terrify her. she heard the planet, could tell when people passed away and rejoined the lifestream, surrounded by all of these voices yet so fucking alone. and did she let it make her bitter? did she become angry or cold, jaded or cruel? no. aerith is kind and giving without being too self-sacrificing and without making her boring. sheâs not as innocent as people are made to believe.
   look at her first interactions with cloud. she flirts mercilessly with him, and then you discover she did it to zack, too. sheâs not afraid to express herself in any fashion and sheâs unapologetic about how forward and positive she is. despite all of the shitty things that happened to her, sheâs still all of these great things. sheâs scrappy, she can be a brat (ask the turks!) and she blooms under the cover of oppression that she lives. sure, sheâs in a beautiful house with a loving mother figure but sheâs in the slums and sheâs being watched constantly by some part of the company that wants to see her dissected or worse.
   and sheâs divine. no, literally. of course it takes her death for the realization of that divinity to really be understood by the fan base and even by her own party, but once aerith dies she becomes an actual deity. itâs sad that you donât get her in your party any more but itâs obvious how much she affected everyone she worked with (and even those she didnât). they spend the rest of the game avenging her, they spend the rest of the game explaining their grief over her loss, promising her death wonât be in vain. and once thatâs done? thereâs an entire movie where cloud deals with his grief over everything, but mainly his self-appointed guilt over her death. as if he could have changed it? i mentioned to @seraphicwiingâ in a conversation (an au one) about sephiroth and aerith ------he didnât kill or break her. he gifted her divinity.
   so this sweet flower girl goes from a first appearance damsel in distress to an actual conduit of the planet, watching over her friends and everyone else from the spiritual plane of it. controlling the lifestream itself to rise up and crush back meteor.
   if you donât like her by this point, itâs a lost cause. honestly, just go play pacman or something.
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?). Â
   maybe strong female leads arenât your cup of tea? perhaps you really wanted aerith to maintain her softness and have none of the bite or edge that i argue make her interesting?
   some people want a strong woman to be something like paine in ffx-2, or lightning in ffxiii, or even lulu in ffx itself ... dark and perhaps a bit brooding, angry with someone or something. they can be gentle but theyâre mostly a razor sharp edge threatening to slice anyone who tries to get close to them. aerith is arguably a hot take on the stronger female leads ... even compared to tifa. you donât doubt that a woman who fights with her fists is a tough, bad bitch ... but aerith isnât physically strong. sheâs the image of a princess honestly and thatâs just not what some people want to see or deal with.
   arguably her personality can come off a bit strong. sheâs snarky and, as i said, a tease. she can be bratty from time to time and that can absolutely be read as irritating, especially to someone whose looking for negative personality traits to focus on at a first glance.
   and a lot of people just see her as a love interest to cloud. and she is, i wonât deny that. itâs been further addressed in the remake with her dream sequence that cloud absolutely has feelings for her. it dredges up the age-old argument from 1997 of: tifa or aerith. why does it have to be or? why canât he love them both in different ways? or the same way? itâs not like aerith has a lot of time to be the love interest, anyway. we all know how disc 1 ended, by this point.
   perhaps people see her end-game divinity as a deus-ex mechanic. sure, it kind of it. but the game never hid its intentions of why aerith was there. she was always special, we just didnât know how. she always had holy, we just didnât know what it meant at the time. but it does seem a bit convenient that right as the meteor is going to crush midgar ------here comes the lifestream, holding it back so holy can stop it! wow, amazing! darn that aerith and her connection to the planet. how awful. maybe cloud could have just braverâd it.

   i love her. itâs just that simple. sheâs so complex and so different from other characters i tend to gravitate toward. she has a darkness but sheâs good, genuinely. i usually go for people who are deeply seeded in some kind of trauma, or are just generally a piece of shit. and aerith certainly has her trauma, but sheâs risen above it. she chooses to live her life as much as she can before the ultimate doom clock ticks to 0, you know?
   i admire her beauty. not just her physical beauty (and she is), but the beauty of her as a person. i wish i could be as endlessly positive as she is, even faced against such awful odds. i wish i could be the kind of person who surrounds themselves with people who love them, despite their flaws. but i am very much the opposite of aerith.
   i consider myself endlessly lucky to be a mouthpiece of some kind of version of her. this is a character iâve had a connection to since i was like, 7 or 9 (and iâm 30 now). the very fact that i get to log in every day and express some form of this wonderful character keeps me connected to her. she has a loud voice in my head, and i think she always had. i think that remake just re-lit the flame for her.
   i wrote her a long time ago, during myspace rp days. but we all know how myspace ended. so i choose to write her now because it feels right. and i really do enjoy having someone who shines so brightly in my head.
What keeps your inspiration going? Â
   the same as everyone else, i think: music, clips of the character, art of her ... but mostly? my writing partners. i wouldnât be anywhere without the people in this site who come to me every day with an interest in my interpretation of aerith. i never expected so many lovely humans to want to see what i can do with her. but i have people dmâing me on discord every day with ideas or thoughts, with musings or what-ifâs ... and it really just keeps this muse so alive for me.
   even though i have a backlog of drafts and inbox things to answer, i can know that they will get done ... itâs just up to me as a human to write things out.

   nope. i donât care if you agree with my headcanons or not. iâm sure there are people who donât like that i have a ship with a sephiroth, or a reeve, or that iâve had her mess around with rufus or biggs. iâm sure there are people who despise the way i make her speak to people ... and thatâs fine. theyâre allowed to. but this is my interpretation of aerith and so far iâm loving everything that iâve gotten to do with her. especially those things that include character building with others.

   people have really hated aerith since 1997. theyâre allowed to have their silly opinions of her. and iâm allowed not to entertain them.

Any tips or things to keep in mind while writing a original mecha story? What about for original mecha stories aimed at a female audience? (Like ones that are more character focused, but have some Real Robot elements like TLGG, Gunbuster, Eva or Macross)
Hi Anon! Thank you for the Ask!
Iâm more of an analytical and academic writer, but hopefully I can be of help anyway.
General Tips
1. If you havenât already, ask yourself these questions:
What kind of mecha story? For myself (and I think this is true of a lot of mecha fans), âmecha is a genreââbutâitâs not a genre that happens in a vacuum. Both Real Robot and Super Robot can take place in hard science fiction settings as well as fantasy settings with magic.
What kind of writing? Short story, long form novel, novel series (light and long form), poetry, experimental formats, sequential illustration formats (e.g. comics, manga), plays, television/film/animation, etc.
Have you read a mecha story that was not in sequential illustration format?
And now I really want to read/listen to a mecha story in Middle English with iambic pentameter. It could have a name like: âOverwalken Searshaft: Caunterbury Legendes.â
(yes English nerds, that title is some sloppy Anglish smooshed with Middle English but you get the idea)
2. Most people are introduced to mecha via anime, manga, or film; and so are likely to not have read mecha stories in a non-visual format. When a show is scripted, there is a lot of writing that goes into describing scenes that we donât think about because weâre seeing/hearing the visual and audial representation of that writing.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words is a single frame worth? Without any context, what do you think is happening in the gif above? How would you describe this less than 3 seconds of action if you were writing it?
I recommend that you read a few novels or short stories that involve mecha or giant robots of one kind or another. They might not be the type of story youâre planning on writing, but they should help with deciding on how much detail you want to go into when writing scenes with mecha (action or otherwise).
Hereâs a few to try:
The Pacific Rim film novelization by Alexander Irvine.
The Del-Ray Robotech novels by Jack McKinney. Skip the ones that are about events in the Robotech cartoonâthey are all goodâbut I recommend reading the ones that are fully original, (books #13-17).
âThe Relicâ by Jonathan Green is a short story within the âLegends of the Space Marinesâ series from Warhammer 40K. In Warhammer 40k, a âSpace Marine Dreadnoughtâ is a powerful Real Robot mecha. One doesnât need to know the entire mythos of Warhammer 40k to understand the story.
âMobile Suit Gundam: Awakening, Escalation, Confrontationâ by Yoshiyuki Tomino. This book is the English translation and compilation of the three light novels that Tomino wrote. It covers the MS Gundam 0079 story, but with added detail (more about New Types, politics of the Zabi family, etc), and is much darker than the anime.
All of the above are Real Robot mecha under different levels of âscience-fiction hardness" and settings. I cannot think of any novels or short stories that are about Super Robots, but they probably exist.
Two Specific Things
1. World-building will need lore and rules for the mecha. Even hand-wavey science-fiction or fantasy-with-magic settings have rules about who can pilot a mecha, how itâs done, what materials the mecha is constructed from, its power source, how it moves, how the pilot(s) perceive the world around them while piloting the mecha, its weapon and defense capabilities, etc. The harder the science-fiction, the more constraints are imposed, and will likely require real world research to help describe it.
For example: Gravity is a Thing. Some Super Robots can fly in such a way that they can easily leave Earthâs atmosphere at or above escape velocity and do battle in multiple types of different gravity environments (e.g. Godmars vs Getter Robo). Itâs hand-waved and not really thought about. This happens in Real Robot too, but there are many Real Robot stories that use gravity limitations, while hand-waving other things (not all giant robots can fly).
As shown aboveâin Gundam 00âthe Gundams can do battle in space and LOE (zero gravity and Low Earth Orbit), and also in mid-air (atmosphere) and on the ground. Thatâs the hand-wavy part, because if we think through the physics of this, a machine optimized for aerial combat at Earth gravity (1G) is probably not going to be optimized for combat in LOE, in space, or in gravity conditions that are less than Earthâs (e.g. the Moon, Mars, etc). The Gundams can fight in all these conditions, but one of their constraints is that they cannot accelerate to escape velocity or shield themselves from high temperature friction during re-entry (atmospheric re-entry is a constraint used throughout the franchise). In Gundam 00, the Gundams have to be transported between surface to space via the space elevators.
Above: One of the things that is a âgame changerâ for these Gundams within that setting, is that Dynames can use the Super Substratospheric Altitude Gun, capable of hitting an orbital target from a stationery position on Earthâs surface. Use of this weapon comes with additional constraints (power, connection to a network for calculations, etc).
Super Robots can also have constraints. Both the Evas in Evangelion, and the combined form of Dairugger/Vehicle Voltron have a timed operational power limit. Evangelion has a lot of Real Robot elements, so as far as Super Robots go, theyâre not very powerful. The more powerful the Super Robot, the harder it is to define a constraint. This is typically where a story hits the âHis power level is over 9000!â problem, or âunleashing the full power will destroy the robot, or kill the pilot.â
Which brings us to Specific Thing #2: Why mecha? What problems do the mecha solve for the protagonist? Especially if a story with a lot of character focus is what youâre going for. How much focus do you want to put on the mecha? The answers to those questions are going to help with the lore and rules for the mecha.
Aiming for a Female Audience
Iâm probably the worst female-ish person to advise on this because I rarely identify with female characters, especially as a tomboy in the 80s (of course, most of them werenât written very well to begin with back then). I identify as gender fluid, but the gender binary that I grew up with still shapes my life. My tastes in fiction are all over the place and are probably not representative of a âfemale audience.â
But I do know that there were a lot of women who liked Gundam from the start. (ÊâżÊâż)

Any audience can be widely diverse, and not everyone within a demographic (broad or narrow) is going to agree on what they want to see, but itâs safe to assume that a sizable part of a female audience that would be interested in a mecha story is probably going to be Doneâą with something that is commonly found in either mecha stories or mainstream science-fiction and fantasy. As to what that specifically is, that can differ quite a bit.
For me, Iâm Doneâą with âTits And Camel Toe Out For Mechaâ in stories with teen characters that are really just ecchi content with a veneer of a serious story slapped on top with a Gainax Ending.
Iâm saying that as someone who loves Go Nagai and Satoshi âPlastic Nippleâ Urushihara, and thinks that the Heavy Metal movie (gif above) is a work of art, which probably makes me a hypocrite, but hey, I have standards for my T&A.
I recommend looking at stories that are known to be popular with women, and then look at stories that are known to be popular to specific demographics of women (intersectional identities). They may not be mecha stories, but if they are in the current zeitgeist, then there is something about the narrative, characters, format, etc that might be common between these stories and quantifiable in a way that can help you aim for a female audience. It might be hard to find out what these are beyond a broad female audience, so research will be necessary.
There are much better sources for advice on this than me, so if audience appeal is something that you want to dive into, then youâve got your work cut out for you.
Character Focused (a grain of salt)
In my biased and totally not expert opinion: the smaller the main cast, the easier it is to have a character focused story (unless you meant âcharacter driven plotâ?), and the mecha itself usually gets a lot of attention as thatâs more or less the point of the genre.
However, a larger main cast provides more varied opportunities for focusing on character interactions, and more material for plot hooks to support multiple plots that can be structured/threaded in a variety of ways. TV Tropes (not my favorite source, but itâs good enough for this) has a rabbit hole of entries about different types of concurrent plots: Soap Wheel; A-B-C-Plot; Two Lines, No Waiting; Four Lines, All Waiting; etc. These entries are useful for getting outside of oneâs head and considering options for how-and-when to introduce and wrap up plots. If character focus is what you want to prioritize, then start with âSoap Wheel,â as soap opera plots are all about character focus and they are a good example of staggering plots in a way that keeps the story going for 20 years or more.

Itâs character focus of a different kind. Like Gundam, LotGH has a lot of female fans, but itâs not a show that one would immediately think of that would appeal to a female audience.
Returning to this thing about âcharacter-driven plotsâ, thatâs a concept that Iâve found to be generalized and abstracted to the point where it doesnât mean anything anymore. A plot-driven story can have a lot of character focus, and most mecha stories are inherently plot-driven (b/c genre), as the mecha is the vehicle for the protagonist to get from Event A to Event B. Mystery and romance genres are an example of plot-driven stories, and in both (but especially romance), there can be a lot of character focus to the point where B and C plots could be âcharacter-drivenâ if they are about the specific characterâs internal change, conflict, growth, some essential part of themselves that demands action, etc.
A mecha story can be structured with a plot-driven long-running A Plot which requires the mecha (so not monster of the week as those are episodic and not long-running), and certain main characters are focused on in such a way that their own internal struggles, conflict, and growth drive B and C plots. Itâs up to you if those plots are concurrent, cyclical, or rotate in-and-out of focus.
For example: Aoki RyĆ«sei SPT Layzner (shown in the gif above) is a Real Robot anime has two sequential long-running A Plots that are plot-driven and focused on the mecha and its pilot (the protagonist). The first A Plot drives the first half of the series, and the second A Plot drives the second half of the series (which was sadly cut short so technically it wasnât the full second half). There is a time-skip between the A Plots. The protagonist, Eiji, has an internal struggle that is threaded throughout, the focus on him creates the âcharacter-drivenâ B Plot (who he is, the mystery behind the strange things that happen to him as he pilots the prototype, his conflicting loyalties between both halves of his heritage, how he reconciles his extreme pacifism with being forced to fight and possibly kill, etc). The small main/supporting cast is used effectively as each supporting character interacts with Eiji in such a way that they are integrated into the B Plot for his growth and resolving his internal conflict. The other main/supporting characters have their own struggles and character growth as well, but not quite enough to constitute a âcharacter-drivenâ plot. The storyâs minor C Plot is external and puts pressure upon the A Plot.
For what itâs worth: A truly âcharacter-drivenâ plotïżœïżœïżœor story that is fully character focusedâis going to yield a story like Franz Kafkaâs âMetamorphosis,â which would be interesting to explore within the mecha genre, but I have a feeling that youâre probably not interested in that much internalized character struggle.

do you have any recommendations on how to like. Take In Umineko. I think it looks really cool and Iâd like to get into it, but thereâs a lot of things that are confusing (like all of the different games, the manga, the anime, ect.) and Iâm not really sure where to start watching/reading it. Basically, a lot of this depends on you and how you prefer to take in media. People are different after all; some people like reading long novels, some prefer comics, u know! So letâs just go over all the avenues and how to get at them, and the rest is up to you!

READING UMINEKO: UNTANGLING THE WEB
OR: what the fuck is umineko and why do you want me to read it, diesel?
Since this is a general To Whom It May Concern post: Umineko no Naku Koro ni (Or Umineko: When They Cry, alternatively When The Seagulls Cry) is a murder mystery/fantasy/metafiction visual novel published between 2007 and 2011. I know âmurder mysteryâ and âmetafictionâ sound pretty boring when you combine them, but trust meâUminekoâs unlike anything youâve seen, and defies explanation. Still, Iâm here to do my best!
Umineko is about a rich and complicated family, and their annual family conferenceâand the year it goes super duper badly. On an isolated island, in the middle of a typhoon, tragedy befalls the familyâon a massive scale! Someone is killing themâall of themâand the only answer that seems to be rising isâ
âBeatrice did it.â
But Beatrice isnât supposed to really exist. Not for real!! No one by that name is on the island. Itâs just a story! Sheâs made upâBeatrice is a legend. A witch who has lived for a thousand yearsâwho loaned the family patriarch ten tons of gold, an insane amount of wealth, in exchange for his soul. Now sheâs collecting on that loan, taking everything back, with interestâthe lives of the family included.
Is the culprit a human, or not? Does the witch exist, or not?Is the culprit one of the 18 people? Does a 19th person exist? OrâŠ?And, most importantlyâwhen the typhoon passes, will anyone remain alive on the island?

Iâd super-recommend Umineko if you enjoy: strong characterization, a solidly built mystery (with plenty of smaller mysteries to try your brain with along the way ;) ), complex and nuanced characters, hype magic fights, Logic-Based Combat(???), deep discussions of trauma and its consequences, large casts of characters, Genre Fuckery, coping, Metaâą, and milfs Complex Lore
I would, however, NOT recommend Umineko if you are triggered by/canât stomach reading about: body horror, gore, death, trauma, child abuse, bullying, discussion of suicide, discussion of sexual assault, etc (you can message me for a more complete list of warnings; Iâm happy to provide super-specific ones if thereâs something specific youâre concerned about, or even give you specific scenes to watch out for. I kept this vague on purpose, but if you message me off anon or via DMs here or at @aceyasu, Iâll be happy to answer anything!)
Overall itâs a pretty dark, emotional story, with a lot of Themesâąâbut itâs also full of love and genuine heartfelt Feelings. I donât think any story has touched me the way Umineko has! Of course, everyoneâs experience is very unique to them, but I think Umineko has something for everyone (provided, of course, that weâre taking into account the content warnings and excluding people who canât/donât want to encounter those things!). The characters, music, story and messageâit all has a lot of heart and it all is very important to me as an individual. Obviously no media is flawless, but I think Uminekoâs good outweighs its badâŠYMMV though of course :p

OKAY WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY
Uminekoâs story is told over 8 arcsâstyled as âepisodesâ. I use âarcâ and âepisodeâ sort of interchangeably! Specific ones I just call âEP#â though. All you really need to know though is thereâs 8 of them, of varying length, and you have to read them all for the full story.
Thankfully theyâre numbered, am i right?? HAFDmgkdfmg
Each episode has its own focus within the overarching narrative and comes with its own fun mysteries and harrowing developments just for you! yay! But basically, the important thing is that theyâre divided into the Question Arcs (1-4) and Answer Arcs (5-8).
Sometimes, to make things confusing, the Answer Arcs are also called âCore Arcsâ or âChiruâ. I will use âAnswer Arcsâ here, but if you encounter those two elsewhere, thatâs what they are. :p
ACTUALLY EXPERIENCING UMINEKO
(now that im done YAPPING)
The anime
Generally viewed as a poor product. Itâs a bad adaption that fails as a standalone, too, because of the amount of important scenes that are missing. Donât watch the anime first if you really want to get into Umineko. Itâs a fun watch once you know how itâs supposed to go, though :p Covers the Question Arcs only, ends with EP4âso even if it was good, it would only be half the story⊠press f to pay respects. The opening fuckin slaps though, and all the VAs are solid.
The manga
Each Episode has its own manga adaption, usually done by a different artist (with exception of EP1, EP3, and EP8, which are all by the same artist). Generally solid; gets the most important parts. For people who want to get through quicker, the manga helps a lot.
The primary cost is that a lot of characterization doesnât get to shine AS bright, as thereâs simply no time to get into the nooks and crannies (still a great cast, though). However, the art is usually fantasticâsince the artist changes every EP, itâs easy to deal with even if you donât like a specific oneâs style. Itâll be gone by next Episode!
A lot of moments get punched up by the more visual format of the manga. You really get a better sense of the characters interacting physically with one another! You do, however, run into the Scanlation ProblemâŠ..
I know, I knowâmost people, when given the option to, donât want to pay for things. So when given the choice between fan scanlations and the official release, a lot of people would choose the scanlations. And theyâre fineâŠfor the most partâŠexcept for the parts that arenât. Some parts (notably in the Answer Arcs) areâŠbad. Really bad. Even I canât really understand it sometimes, despite knowing this story inside out⊠LOL
If youâre good at parsing Scanlation SNAFU or canât afford/donât want to buy it, you can find Umineko on MOST manga hosts! I donât know which you prefer so Iâm not gonna link âem hahahafkgmfh I usually use Manga Rock but thatâs because I usually am reading on my phone and I like their app. The episodes are all numbered, so itâs pretty easy to find your way around!
On the other hand, if you have a hard time understanding poor translations, reading inconsistent typesetting/fonts, or simply Can afford it/prefer buying media, the manga is being officially released in English by YenPress! As is standard nowadays, you can get them in both physical volumes and digital e-books! However, YenPressâ release is currently ongoingâthe first volume of EP8 is slated to release in March.

The visual novel
Ah, here we areâthe head honcho himselfâŠ! This is the original version of Umineko. These are the ones we call âgamesâ, and why we sometimes say u âplayâ Umineko, but. Really. Itâs just reading. Theyâre kinetic novels. Its literally just reading. So I donât know why we complicate things like that.

This is where the characterization and voice of Umineko really shines! The style is often simple to read, sometimes even comically casual, but it cuts deep when it wants to. Even really simple lines can have a really strong impactâitâs a really pleasant style to read, IMOâŠpretty easy to understand most of the time, but emotionally resonant all the same!
Reading the VN is somewhat of an undertaking, because of the amount of hours requiredâŠItâs a far longer read. Depending on your reading speed and whether or not you pause to think/talk about things as you read, people clock in 100-200 hours to finish it.
But, on the upsideâbecause it has so much more time than the manga, the VN can really get deep into the characters, their dynamics, and their inner conflicts. You really get a deep sense for everyoneâs character and it makes most of the cast feel fleshed-out enough that you appreciate all of them to some extent (whether positive or negative :P)
Oh, actuallyâthe original Umineko branded itself a âSound NovelââŠ.as opposed to a Visual Novel, where the emphasis is on, uhâVisualsâUmineko leans more heavily on audio to create its atmosphere. And the music? Fuckin rips!! The Umineko soundtrack is huge and has tons of absolute bangers. Itâs easy to see why it decided to market itself as a Sound Novel rather than a visual novelâthe graphics of the original PC version are simple, but the atmospheric sound effects and BGM really shines.

The VN nowadays is split into the two halves; if you get EP4, itâll include 1-3 as well, essentially. Picking up Question Arcs (or EP4) and Answer Arcs (or EP8) gives u the whole 8 episodes. Easy peasy! Because we live in the future now, and retroactive inclusion of past games is just convenient!
There is an official English release now, which is a brand new luxury. Itâs even on Steam! Wow! Thatâs the easiest way to get your paws on the hands-on experience. The translation has been slightly updated as well! Also, they added a new set of toggle-able graphics that areâŠumâŠI mean theyâre certainly newâŠ#BarelyContainedOpinionAlert
If you donât want to pay or canât afford itâŠuhhhâŠ.I used to have torrent links but theyâre all dead. :T still, you can probably just find them, if you know your way around torrents. For the translation, youâll have to either get a pre-patched version of the game, or use the translation groupâs instructions to patch it yourself.Â

RONTRA OPINIONS / SUGGESTIONS
Personally, I favor the VN for most scenes, but the manga for my light casual reading. Yâknow? The VN can be prettyâŠumâŠdense, at times.
Ironically, I think EP1 itself might be the biggest hurdle for total first-timers. Itâs definitely paced as a âpart 1 of 8âł for the first solid portion! By which I mean, it really takes its time establishing the cast and their individual situations. Which isnât a bad thingâespecially in the overarching scope of how long the story isâbut if you arenât sure about the premise, format, or if youâll enjoy Umineko at all, it can be sort ofâŠchallenging.
It all really depends on the individualâthings like attention span, investment, and personal preferences, imo. Some people just donât enjoy reading that much text at once! And thatâs fine! Some people love it and thatâs fine! Some people think the intro is too long, some people think itâs intriguing from the start. Some really like watching character building, and some prefer to see action happening. Either way is fine, so itâs really up to you!
Usually, if someone isnât sure, I suggest they try EP1 in manga form first, just to see if the general premise entices them; itâs fully possible to jump back and do the VN if you decide you like it! It sacrifices some characterization in exchange for exploring the main premise a little faster.
Similarly, if you just canât get into the VNâyou can read the entire thing with manga too, if you favor action over the deepest character lore. Itâs still a good time and a good experience!
Though, in EP1âČs favorâif you ARE sure about it, and are able to dedicate your attention to the first 10-13 hours of set-up, EP1 has one of the most rewarding escalations Iâve encountered! If you are able to sit and read a fairly long-winded introduction, you are rewarded with the most buck wild Popping Off you can imagine.
So thereâs nothing wrong with jumping right in there with the VN, if you enjoy reading!
However, if you do find that the VN is dragging too much for you, you can go in reverse tooâand finish EP1 by manga, then decide if you want to jump back to the VN or not. I promise, the novels pick up the pace tooâitâs just getting all the introductions down that can be daunting, when the initial cast size is a staggering 18 people (plus the LORE has to be established too)!!

My favorite setups when I play by myself are either Original PC Graphics + Voice Acting, or Full PS3 Patch. I personally really like the original PC graphics, but I understand some people think theyâre kindaâŠumâŠRough, to say the least xD PS3 graphics are a close second for me though.
I donât really like the steam versionâs new sprites. Some people donât mind them, so itâs up to you what you prefer, but I think they donât really convey the feeling as well as their counterparts sometimes⊠:/
But hey, everyoneâs got their own opinions!
I also prefer the EP8 manga to the EP8 VN. If I have control over someoneâs first playthrough, I always push over to the manga for EP8! In my opinion, itâs a rare instance where the adaption is better than its original. People have different opinions on this, of course, but since this section is My Opinions Central, thatâs my opinioooon!!! :D

AFTERWORD
All in all, Umineko isâŠbig. its very very big. it has a huge cast (the final count comes out to like, almost 70 characters!) and a huge story. and huge feelings.
The manga and the VN are the main avenues of getting into it. Itâs easier than it looks at a glance; and yet, more daunting than it seemsâŠ
If you have the time and energy to pour hours of your time into it, Umineko is a super worthwhile story that tackles genuinely difficult material with a delicate but honest hand.
It clowns up sometimes and stumbles over its own demographicâsee: Weird Vaguely Unpleasant Anime-brand Sex Comedy that springs up a lot in EP1, some in EP2, and then largely disappears save for a few dumb jokes here and thereâbut overall is a solidly built and solidly delivered story about trauma, love, loss, and getting your family ritual-murdered by a thousand-year-old witch who may or may not be real.

With Donât Make Deals with Demons on its way to being published I thought it would be fun to dive into the lore and fun facts of the world the characters inhabit as we wait for October to come. So, letâs talk about Lumen Solum. More under the cut. History and slight culture lesson time!
Lumen Solum
Lumen Solum is a land made up of four big continents and four smaller continents, all united by their capital, Central City State. The land used to be one big continent many centuries ago before a huge earthquake split the land into the continents everyone knows today. It was both a tragic event and a much needed one.
For you see, before the earthquake had happened, a huge civil war was raging between the inhabitants of Lumen Solum. A huge argument that had devolved into chaos on how the land should be run and who should be in charge. It seemed like it would never stop, nothing to calm the anger of those fighting. When the earthquake hit, the fighting came to a near standstill. Areas where battle lines had been were now drastically seperated by water, many were injured from the earthquakeâs effects and the importance of taking care of ones comrades became more important than taking out enemies.
It was during this time of silence that people began to think, wondering if this whole battle even had a point. That maybe this wasnât the best way to settle the matters that brought them to this state. There were many who still wanted to fight but they soon grew tired and were outnumbered by those who had enough, especially the leaders of the various troops that were fighting each other.
Within time, all came together and agreed that the fighting should stop and that all should instead focus on rebuilding their beloved home and rise together as something stronger. It was that day, Central City State was established as the capital, a place where all parts of Lumen Solum were united as one and was the sign of their unity and their new found peace.
Central City State
Central City State is the capital of Lumen Solum. Itâs where all parts of Lumen Solum come together and is seen as the sign of their unity. Central City State is the hub for all big things, from the most recent steam technology discoveries to the latest advances in medicine and so on. Itâs also the place for the leaders of the respective continents to meet and discuss matters and make sure everything is running properly. Itâs a great place to meet all kinds of people and definitely a place for someone to try and get their start on something big if luck happens to be on their side.
Protea
Protea was the first continent to re-establish and rebuild itself after the earthquake. Proteans are well known for their strong builds and endurance, so it was no surprise to anyone when they were the first to rise back up after the war. They have the greatest sources of pure metals, minerals and many other things thanks to all the mountains that populate their land. They were huge contributors in helping build Central City State and rebuilding the towns and cities of the other continents with their resources and their skills in craftsmanship. Proteans are also known for being rather friendly and practically treat everyone around like they were family. Itâs also said extreme temperatures are nothing to them. Along with the cold mountains they tend to inhabit, they also have the vast deserts below they have learned to survive in with creating oasis stops for people take refuge in when traveling and even whole villages. Hot or cold, nothing can seem to stop any Protean from accomplishing their tasks.
Lotalily
Lotalily was right behind Protea in re-establishing and rebuilding itself. While they had their part in the war, the people of Lotalily did what they could to keep as far away from the war as possible. Despite they participation in mostly just defending themselves, they are a very pacifistic people. When the war ended, it was a huge relief and they were more than happy to help everyone recover. The people of Lotalily are skilled in the ways of making beautiful jewelry and fine clothing, having access to many resources on their continent that allow them to do as such. They are also skilled in the ways of using their lotus and lily flowers as means of healing, which was a huge help in recovery for those affected by the earthquake. People of Lotalily are often described as silent but sharp in their words. They will tell the truth but they will be gentle as well, as a means of being of polite and showing a kind hand. A way of life that many of Lotalily strive to live by.
Rosaria
Rosaria was one of the last to recover after the war. Their land had taken the hardest hit from the earthquake and it was unsure for the longest time if it would ever be restored to its former beauty. But with time and much help from the other neighboring continents, the land regained its beauty and the people were able to get back up on their feet. Rosarians are known for being very innovative people, in art, technology, medicine, many things. They like to try everything and put a new spin on it. Many of the other continents do this as well but many joke that Rosarians somehow have it in their blood to always put a new spin on things. Not that itâs a bad thing, some of the greatest technology developments in regards to steam engines came from Rosaria, especially from Apollo Halitus and his associates, who developed the pipe mail system everyone uses and the railways. So, while many joke that Rosarians can be crazy in how they handle certain things, they are rather helpful and as many have noted, are always more than ready to step in and lend a hand.
Iris
Iris is the smallest of the continents in Lumen Solum and was also one of the ones to recover the fastest from the war. Irisians are survivors as many say. They donât have a lot to their land but they know how to live on the bare minimum and work resources to their advantage. What they lack in quantity they make up in quality. No one can deny their craftsmanship in weaponry and their skills with taming animals, horses especially. During the war, they were a force to be reckoned with and many were fearful if they ever saw soldiers riding in on horses with well made armor. It was a sure sign that they were from Iris. After the war, they dedicated themselves to helping establish a proper defense system and means of keeping the peace in Lumen Solum. They also helped and still do to this day with food distribution to those who need it desperately. The systemâs not perfect, but they do what they can, often working alongside the priests and priestess from the Church of Angels as a relief effort for those suffering from natural disasters or need help getting back on their feet. While once feared by many during the war, those of Iris are now seen as some of the most charitable people youâll ever meet.
Jasaree
Jasaree was the last to recover after the war, right behind Rosaria. The earthquake had a caused a massive flooding throughout the continent that eventually resulted in the creation of the three great lakes that sit in the middle of the land. It was said those of Jasaree had lost the most thanks to the water drowning many of their people along with spreading sickness. It was a miracle they hadnât been wiped out entirely. They were very grateful when help came and did what they could to repay the favor. Mainly, in record keeping. No one has better records of the war and stories than Jasaree. To them, history is very important and must be kept as accurate as possible. Even with the flooding, they had done everything to preserve scrolls and books from getting tarnished. After they were able to re-establish their land, with the help of others, they built what is considered the biggest library in all of Lumen Solum, containing all records of history and many folk tales and much more in their shelves. If you need information, thatâs one of the best places to go to learn about anything. Jasaree plays a huge part in book distribution  in Lumen Solum along with being a contributor in education for everyone. Not every Jasareen is a writer or a teacher, but across all of them, none of them deny that sometimes nothing is better than a good book to read after a long day of chores or personal hobbies.
Maravilla
Maravilla is the biggest of the smaller continents and was able to recover after Lotalily. Maravilla is a place of wonder to many. Itâs one of the hottest places yet one of the most beautiful. With towering forests full of trees of the fruit bearing nature, a beautiful lake and small natural hot springs scattered about the area, itâs definitely seen as a vacation spot by many. For the Maravillians, thereâs nothing they take more pride in than their land and their culture. Their efforts in rebuilding Lumen Solum ranged from helping provide meals (Well cooked meals according to them. Many account saying they were determined to make sure no one was scrawny. In fact, this is still noted to happen in present times and it is advised you should never say youâre starving at a Maravillian dinner table.) and helping people cheer up with dances and songs from their culture. Maravillians are very very sociable, right up there with Proteans in friendliness and are also fierce. The fiery people with big hearts as some people have come to know them as. For them, family is everything and to those they care for, they become a larger part of that family.
Hibis
Hibis recovered around the same time as Lotalily and Maravilla. This continent in particular is considered one of the most diverse in setting. From mountains, to forests, a lake and even small beaches. All of this allows them access to many different resources which helped in the war and most certainly helped during relief efforts. Hibisians, while having access to many things, are mainly known for their flower talents along with gardening as a whole. Their relief efforts involved helping establish irrigation and crop systems for the other continents to use that was suited to their land and alongside Maravilla and Iris, provide food for those who were in need. Present day, theyâre still the seen as the biggest food provider for Lumen Solum and for their flower arrangements. Beauty is something they treasure in Hibis and the best way they show their pride in such a thing is the flowers they grow for all to see and enjoy.
Sakuran
Sakuran is the second biggest of the smaller continents next to Maravilla. Like Lotalily, they did what they could stay out of the war but still defended themselves when the time called. Unlike many others, the damage from the earthquake hadnât affected them as much but they still suffered some damage. Once they recovered, they pitched in the efforts to help others, mainly in construction and development of technology. It was thanks to some of the lead scientists in Sakuran that new systems were developed to help buildings withstand earthquakes better along with other natural disasters. To this day new technology is still being developed to help deal with natural disasters and keep as many as safe as possible. Sakurans are very much seen as innovators and have paved the way for many future developments. To them, itâs better to look forward rather than look back.

guide to borderlandscast
i probably should have done this waaaayyy sooner but i finally completed a detailed guide as to what borderlandscast is, for those of you who are confused about what the borderlands games are, how this au operates and have no idea where to start reading.

tales from the borderlands
borderlands is mostly a shooter (or at least, the first three games). no way getting around that. itâs not just any ordinary shooter. itâs a shooter backed by a solid story, characters (featuring a diverse and dynamic cast and an irredeemable asshole of a villain) and most importantly of all: lots of guns.
basic lore (pandora,vaults, vault hunters, eridians, sirens, oh my)
pandora is a backwater, lawless and surprisingly, not arid planet that the canon borderlands game and this au takes place on (figure 1 and 2). as with any planet housing alien technology and exploitable resources in super secret, difficult to reach and impenetrable locations, there will be people who are willing to hunt down said locations and there are people who are willing to pay said people to go track down these alien caches.

these legendary caches are called vaults. vaults can hold weaponry, sweet loot, some sort of alien technology or portals to another dimension. the methods for opening a vault varies. some will open for anybody, some run on a timer while others have very specific requirements (like a key). the people who hunt these caches (whether for personal gain, fame, fortune or are simply in it for the challenge; the reasons vary widely from one individual to another) are called vault hunters. vault hunters donât necessarily need to work for a corporation to seek the vaults.
the vaults have been around ever since an alien race (called eridians) upped and left or died out (long before humans became aware of their existence), leaving the vaults behind. we donât know what eridians look like but their appearances can be extrapolated from the statues and carvings scattered around ruins (figure 3).

additionally, eridians also left their mark throughout the universe in the form of human women with god-like powers. these women are called sirens. itâs not exactly known for certain if sirens can randomly develop these powers sometime in their life, are born with them or can have the powers deliberately passed to them from another siren.
sirens are clearly marked by the blue tattoos that only manifest on the left side of their bodies. the blueness isnât always present since the tattoos can glow a different color when sirens use their powers. nanosounds, for instance, has purple siren tattoos due to the nature of her powers. to date, only thirteen documented accounts of sirens exist as per the bl1 guide (with more accounts possibly existing but lost to time). in bl2, handsome jack states that only six sirens can ever exist at any given time in the known universe.
the eridians also didnât just leave behind the vaults and siren powers, they also left behind a mysterious metal, called eridium. eridium can be processed for a different number of applications and effects, not all of them good (e.g. slag). some sirens have a connection with eridium and can catalyse it to boost their powers at the cost of becoming addicted to the point of being unable to live without it. not a pleasant way to go. the effect on sirens varies amongst individual siren.
to get a one-up on other people hunting the vaults, some people like to hire or make use of sirens (or attempt to kill them). given their common tie to eridians, sirens also have a connection to the vaults. i mentioned before that some vaults canât be opened by just anybody. sometimes, a siren is whatâs needed.
the corporations
corporations form a major part of the borderlands universe. all the known corporations are vying to become the number one dominating force in the universe. corporations produce and control a number of goods but are known primarily for the manufacturer of guns, combat accessories and weaponry. no corporation will make a product that is completely identical to another corporationâs but they will license parts from one another. iâve already listed the known corporations in the glossary over here under âmanufacturersâ.
in any case, the list consists of:

Atlas (dead)
Dahl
Maliwan
Tediore
Pangolin
Vladof
Jakobs
Anshin
for the history behind the first three corporationâs involvement with pandoran history and how they directly and indirectly contributed towards making pandora what it is today, head on over to here for a history lesson.
the bandits
the corporation dahl left behind a workforce that consists primarily of former convicts, otherwise known as bandits. bandits form a significant portion of the pandoran population and next to wildlife and the corporations, are the things likely to kill people on pandora. everybody generally hates bandits. bandits consist primarily of scattered clans that, at any given moment, can either be in an alliance, are neutral or are simply fighting one another if theyâre not fighting amongst themselves.
99% of bandits will happily murder whole towns, civilians, vault hunters, corporate representatives (both innocent and not so innocent), Â corporation property (e.g. loaders) or wildlife. theyâre not exactly picky in terms of targets and tend to shoot indiscriminately. unless theyâre bribed with huge amounts of money or tricked into doing so.
borderlandscast
now that you have a basic understanding of borderlands, what is even borderlandscast.
this au consists of myself (@terminally) and @siins fitting the yogscast members into the borderlands universe. itâs an alternate universe where the characters havenât just magically been teleported into the universe; theyâve grown up in said universe! this has some interesting effects on their backgrounds, motivations, character arcs and personalities.
thereâs no knowledge of minecraft, no yogslabs, no blackrock, no flux buddies held by any of the characters. itâs pure borderlands. i do make the occasional reference to some of the storylines though. good luck spotting those!
the cast page consists of people whoâve made at least one appearance; the cast page is mostly done for now, save for echo icons. all the echo icons will eventually be completed.
aside from that, borderlandscast primarily consists of writing done by me (adam), with drawings by the mighty overlord siins. the writing consists of a main storyline (called âthe last vault hunterâ) and a series of related, standalone fic (categorised as âbeyond the borderlandsâ). iâve explained the differences between the two over here.
the last vault hunter (main storyline)
âthe last vault hunterâ chronicles rythianâs adventures on pandora. the fic starts when lalna crashes into rythianâs life. rythian decides (against his better judgement) to help lalna. rythian is a vault hunter, freelancer and a veteran of living on pandora in comparison to lalna, who is completely new to pandoraâs way of life.
nanosounds (a bona fide siren) and will strife (fashionable businessman with a turret and a surprising aptitude for killing things) eventually join forces with rythian and lalna. together, the four form the main group of vault hunters that we follow around for the duration of the main storyline.
there is plot! it heavily references the borderlands canons (e.g. vaults, corporations, guns). having a decent knowledge of the borderlands canon is extremely helpful but not required. i explain most of the stuff anyway, on top of providing my own take on things.

Mattâs Top 7 Games of 2017
2017 was a weird year.
At times, it was hard to focus on games.
On a global scale, we found ourselves often transfixed on news both positive and negative; in my opinion, it was often more of the latter. Games became an afterthought in a lot of ways.Â
But at times, it was easy to focus on games.
They provided a sanctuary, a place to take a breather and relax, to joke and laugh and have fun with friends or on my own. Even at times when the subject matter of some games took on relevance to real world issues, it was still fascinating and an escape in a way but a thoughtful one.
With this all in mind, I still wanted to take some time to celebrate some games I very much enjoyed (and others Iâm just starting to get into and very much enjoy) in 2017.
Originally⊠this was going to be a much longer and more involved thing.Â
Instead, Iâm going with something a bit shorter and more succinct so hereâs seven games I really enjoyed this year, one of which has taken up a spot as my favorite game of the year. Thanks for reading and following along this year!Â
ABSOLVER (Sloclap)
As someone who doesnât exactly enjoy playing fighting games, Absolver would seem a bit of an anomaly, right? Youâre correct!Â
When it was presented at E3 a few years ago, I actually saw it as a Dark Souls-esque RPG with martial arts combat and lore instituted in place of sword-and-board action. I was so into the world, into what they were trying to build, into the ideas of gameplay (stances and switching between them, the moves themselves).
To a degree, this game is that⊠but the true endgame? What really drives the game once youâve defeated the campaign? Itâs the PvP, the actual âfighting gameâ part, and itâs something Iâve very much enjoyed - I never thought those words would leave my mouth.
Ever.
For someone like me, Absolver has proven to be a perfect introduction into that world; into fighting the same people online over and over to learn their movesets, to practice timing and get that down, to get frustrated but also understand why Iâm getting beat and getting better.
The year is 2017 and I now enjoy playing an honest-to-god fighting game. What has happened to me?
FINAL FANTASY XIV: STORMBLOOD (Square Enix)
2017 was the year I truly got into Final Fantasy XIV.
I had struggled in the past, but the quality-of-life improvements plus finding two jobs/classes (Samurai and Monk) that I really liked propelled me into the main story of the core game, the Heavensward expansion, and the recently released Stormblood which brings you - the Warrior of Light - to far-off places like Gyr Abania, Othard, and the Ruby Sea.
Iâm someone whoâs never really been into the series in general, but the story and characters of FFXIV has grabbed me in an unexpected way and brought me along for a pretty wild ride at times. What World of Warcraft lacks in terms of consistency in its lore and sometimes not going far enough with its visuals? Thatâs what this game makes up for me.
Iâm glad I finally got into this game and am looking forward to whatever patches and stories Yoshi-P and team have next for us.Â

DOOM (id Software)Â
A game from 2016 on 2017âs list?
Youâre correct, but this game is just that good and thereâs a good reason for why it shows up on this list.
I actually purchased this game last year, but was never able to play it due to technical limitations. When I purchased a new PC in early September, this was one of the first games I installed.
And holy shit, all of the hype? All of the coverage I read? DOOM delivers on that, and more. It understands what it is, reverential in a way to the first games in this series⊠but also fresh, fun, and thrilling with modern twists and turns. While short, the campaign is worth the price of admission and I hope we get to see more of this story in a proper sequel after a good cliffhanger ending.
All in all, this game is a hell of a thing.

WOLFENSTEIN II: THE NEW COLOSSUS (MachineGames)Â
Iâm only a couple of hours into this game, and thereâs already been a few moments where Iâve had to just sit back and let out a loud âWhat the fuck?â at what Iâm seeing on the screen. Itâs enough to put it on this list. Really.Â
As someone who never played The New Order but is generally aware of what happened, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus appears to be something that stays true to the themes and roots of what that game set⊠and then expands that beyond those boundaries and confines to a degree that at times feels unsettling and uncomfortable in a way which reflects the fears of many in modern times.
Itâs a game that is both an escape and a reality check in a way.
Even in a game with such great characters and shows reverence for them (but also will pull the trigger at any time), the compelling performance and depth Brian Bloom gives as B.J. Blazkowicz is absolutely incredible. The little things he says as you traverse levels, the flashbacks to a brutal past; the catharsis you seem him go through in often spectacularly bloody and violent fashion? Itâs incredible to watch, mesmerizing almost.
Sure, the gameplay isnât exactly what a lot of folks love⊠but at the same time, it almost doesnât matter.
The New Colossus succeeds because the themes and message are heard loud and clear.
DESTINY 2 (Bungie)Â
Iâve seen a lot of negativity aimed toward Bungie lately.
And I think itâs understandable.
Theyâve messed up a lot on a variety of fronts, including the most important - communication and transparency - and at times? It seems like Destiny 2 may be an unsalvageable situation, a repeat of the mistakes the company with the first game.
But a lot of the time? I have a great time with this game still and have spent hours exploring, raiding, or just chaining Strikes over and over with an occasional foray into the Crucible. I still appreciate the lore of Destiny to a ridiculous degree, to how the idea of âpost-apocalyptic space fantasy operaâ is explored. As frustrating as it can be sometimes, when Bungie does their lore right? Itâs some of the best worldbuilding and storytelling Iâve ever seen.
I hope that Bungie can iron out the issues, because this game has the makings of a great foundation with which to build upon. Only time can tell if they can pull that off.
SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY (Nintendo)Â
Remember the crazy trailer for this game at E3?
I donât think we actually thought this would deliver, right? Maybe?
Who knows?
What matters is that Nintendo delivered on that crazy gameplay reveal and gave us Super Mario Odyssey, which at its heart is the Mario everyone wanted all along with a few twists and turns that make it a fresh experience. Incorporating the âCaptureâ mechanic to the way this game does is tremendous and getting to utilize Cappy himself as a tool for exploration allows for you to fully explore the beautiful and vibrant worlds of this game.
Plus thereâs the 2D sidescrolling element, and the photo mode, and the post-game stuff which-

The thing I want to give Odyssey the most credit for? Itâs just a happy game. Itâs about making exploration fun, itâs about having a damn good time, and it delivers on those in every single way possible. In any other year, it might be my favorite game of the year butâŠ
THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD (Nintendo)Â
If you know me, this is no surprise.
Iâve been thinking on how to best write this since early March.
For Nintendo to basically blow up the standards of what a Zelda game is? To bring back the roots of what made games like the original the thing that caught fansâ attention and kept them hanging on for thirty-plus years? Itâs a hell of a thing to do, but I feel as though they stuck the landing and with aplomb.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an incredible thing; an open-world action-adventure game which takes so many elements plucked from so many other genres and then blends them all together in something that never fails to awe or amaze. Itâs something I wanted for them to do for so long, to shake up the franchise and do something different.
Does it have some flaws here and there? Absolutely. Itâs not a perfect game daresay, but damn itâs⊠an experience, itâs something Iâve told almost all of my friends who likes games to go play. Those dungeons you loved to explore or those items you so loved from past titles? Theyâre not here, but for good reason.
Why?
Because Breath of the Wildâs true challenge is exploration in this vibrant and amazing world of Hyrule. Itâs conquering that highest mountain top or finding that shrine in a den full of dangerous enemies; maybe itâs hunting Lynels all day or trying to find all 900 Korok seeds.
In a year where I feel like I needed an escape at times? This game provided just that.Â
Hell, Iâve put 400+ hours into this thing and I can see myself putting in more.
What surprises me most about this game is the emotional impact I felt. In previous games, the same plot is often followed; many of the tropes and story beats in Zelda games are often circular. While this story is sparse in some places, the delivery of it is interesting enough that it makes me more interested in the canon of this universe than I have been since Wind Waker. I want to know whatâs next for this incarnation of Link and Zelda in this world Nintendo has so elaborately constructed.
All in all, I wouldnât call Breath of the Wild just my favorite game of 2017.
Itâs without a doubt one of my favorite games ever, a classic that propels this franchise into the future and for the better by drawing upon its âyou can do anything anywhere at anytimeâ beginnings.Â

All hail one of Disneyâs only âniceâ forgotten queens...Kida of Atlantis! For real, sheâs one of the only Disney princesses who becomes a queen eventually and retains her goodness and breaks that trope of âevil queens/stepmomsâ thatâs become so infamous...so you know.. suitable on the Atlanteans for embodying love! I mean, hey, even Elsa kind of went into her shadow self for a bit thereâŠ. Anyways, Atlantis is not your typical Disney movie...Thereâs no musicals or happy-go-lucky princesses who get helped by forest animals or swoon at princes⊠Instead, we get an hour and a half of a nerd exploring ancient temples, translating dusty books, and a badass warrior princess fighting for her people. And of course⊠It's freakin Atlantis, so obviously, weâre going to talk about it! Whatâs more, under the surface, especially in the design elements, thereâs a massive wealth of ancient spirituality that taught an entire generation of kids about lost cities and consciousness for the first timeâŠ
So, spoiler alert⊠Atlantis is about a young researcher named Milo who, through the funding of an old family friend - whoâs pretty into Yoga, can gather a crew to search for the lost civilization and its mysterious power source. They discover that not only does Atlantis really exist, but that itâs still inhabited by people hundreds or thousands of years old who have super-advanced technology and wisdom but have forgotten how to use it since the Cataclysm. But by far, one of the most immediate things that stick with you after watching, though, is that animation and art style⊠along with the design of Atlantis itself⊠It is entirely on par with Plato!
In this movie, the crew finds a civilization bathed in New Age imagery, colors, and idealism, reminiscent of Madame Blavatskyâs depictions of the ancient empire. Ancient symbols, especially the ever-present spiral and triangle, are carved into ceremonial stones and painted on masks that resemble the ritual attire of Native Americans -something that Sweet notices early on. And nor was this an accident, for when researching and designing Atlantis, the creators went through every kind of theory imaginable and eventually found the work and readings of Edgar Cayce, the Sleeping Prophet.
According to Cayce, Atlantis was a highly advanced civilization in touch with the higher aspects of themselves and reality and had found a way to integrate consciousness with technology and powered their machines through crystals. To Cayce, Atlantis was a living, breathing spiritual force that existed. Supposedly, they could focus their mental energy on crystals to produce usable energy, which could, in some cases, be used as a weapon. Naturally, when Disney was coming up with concept art, they thought the same thing as all of usâŠ..â well, thatâll look awesome!â and they made it! The giant floaty consciousness crystal was born, and Atlantis was designed around it.
In the movie, Atlantis is presented as the archetypal Mother Civilisation, from which all modern cultures ultimately came. As a result, all of their temples and buildings reflect common styles from everywhere youâve come to expect in the modern world⊠Even their language is based on Proto Indo European, with a dash of Sumerian grammar thrown in! The point is, the creators took the Occult idea of Atlantis and ran with it⊠Even the journey there goes through a kind of Hollow Earth - whoopsie, maybe we canât say that without getting demonetized⊠But anyway, all the while being guided by a sacred journal that is pretty reminiscent of Lovecraftâs Necronomicon.
The Great Crystal itself holds a massive amount of spiritual wisdom too. Itâs a life-giving power-source that energizes all life, lights, and flying vehicles in Atlantis. Each person is connected to this force through a personal crystal amulet worn as a pendant⊠which has been ripped off so many times⊠But as the king explains, though, the crystal is way more than just a power source or mechanistic machine⊠Itâs created by and takes fuel from its people's consciousness and collective emotions, connecting them in one big, living, breathing âheart.â
Itâs even said that the crystal - and by extent, all the smaller crystals, have a consciousness of their own, making it kind of like a deity. Weirdly though, near the beginning, when Kida speaks to Milo, she refers to âthe gods wiping out Atlantis,â indicating some polytheistic belief system. While this could be a throw-away line, thereâs a sense that the Atlantean world view encompassed multiple gods, as well as this understanding of a universal consciousness that connects and guides all people and things.. seemingly blending ancient polytheism with Americanized Buddhism and New Age concepts like the Akashic Records, which contains all of humanity's past collective knowledge. While we have this polytheistic belief system, it is still unified in their source-consciousness-crystal-ma jigger, so itâs kind of like a mix or polytheistic-monotheism.
Interestingly, according to background fandom sites, in the lore around 100,000 BC, a giant comet passed over the Earth, and a large fragment broke off and landed in the kingdom. Upon examination, the Atlanteans found that it contained a massive crystal and uncovered the excellent properties it possessed. In time, they built their entire culture, civilization, and empire upon it, connecting with it until it became the Heart Crystal that we see in the movie. Thereâs even a theory that it came from the Mystic Isles, which is like another dimension in the Disney Verse where crazy powerful entities live and are the source of all magic, but thatâs another video on its own!
One of the more underlying messages of this movie is its commentary on how nature needs to be protected and not put to waste. In the film, the Flood events were caused by the hubris of the king. In his arrogance, he wanted to use the crystal and consciousness as a weapon...which caused significant instability and that big flash we see at the beginning that eventually caused the fall. The manipulation of consciousness into a firearm is pretty similar to Atlantis's story that weâve explored in both the Human History Movie and The Anunnaki MovieâŠ
The King pushed aside the need for the crystal as a life force and used it for a selfish purpose, which only led to ruin. After the flood happened, the King hid the crystal under Atlantis since he didnât want anyone to try and use its power for destructive purposes, and he feared that what happened to his wife would happen to his daughter. By hiding the crystal from sight, the King ignored the past, which ironicallyâŠ.is what the crystal thrives on.
Perhaps there is a message here about the misuse of our consciousness for egotistical gain. In our current, disharmonious state, many of us may act like the King and seek to use our gifts to expand our kingdom rather than genuinely connecting with our hearts and living in balance⊠If the events of the movie are anything to go by, this can only go one way. The crystal, then, can be seen as both a natural source of energy and something sacred. As long as the people respect it, the crystal protects them, gives them power, and provides them with a long lifeâŠ.but as soon as they are disconnected from consciousness, they begin to die. Ahh, I get it! The crystals a metaphor for nature⊠or our souls! Or God⊠Or all 3!
Beautifully though, when the king finally faced his shadow, Kida restored the crystal to its proper place in the community, and Atlantis began to thrive again. The message here is pretty clearâŠ.the crystal is the collective consciousness and heart of the Atlantians and reflects our consciousness too. We should use this power within us with respect and not use it to harm others. In this way, we can thrive as a species, but if we hide our spirit under the surface and ignore it, or even worse⊠Try to mechanize it in our arrogance, and it could lead to our ruin. Â
This dual nature is shown pretty well at the beginning and end, coming full circle. When Milo first meets Kida, he has a cut on his chest that she heals by touching him with her crystal, ultimately coming from a place of love...but at the end, when Milo is fighting Rourke, he cuts him with a piece of the main crystal and turns him into Crystal-stein...maybe the crystal was tapping into the intention behind its users?
In the work of the Theosophist Alice Bailey, who the team also drew on for inspiration for the artwork, she tells us that âduring the time of Atlantis there was a tremendous battle on the astral between the Forces of Light, who wanted to lift human evolution out of materialism and separateness, and the involuntary Forces of Darkness, who wanted to enslave human will and more deeply immerse humanity in the matter,â which is what she argued was the cause of the fall. Itâs quite keen than that Milo's final battle is against the heartless materialism of two bad teammates who had stolen the Crystal to sell on the black market..itâs an excellent little work that the team did...not only are some egotistical humans trying to lock the crystal-force away and sell it..but theyâre ultimately defeated, only to have the crystal soar into the sky and be free in all its glory.
Now, of course...we canât do a video on Atlantis without mentioning Kida.. you know, one of the best Disney princess ever who has been criminally underrated. By the end, she becomes a semi-ascended master, bonding her consciousness to the crystal and going all glowy and holy and becoming a being of pure energy. In a time of great need, the crystal can choose a host to channel its power and protect the kingdom, which sounds an awful lot like Thothâs ship underneath the Sphinx, but hey, I digress.
Kida embodies the divine feminine in her romantic nature, going to her father to broach new ideas about how to save their culture and has a perfect balance of the sacred masculine and isn't afraid to put her thoughts into action. With Milo, she forms a pretty good creator team that brings consciousness back to the people⊠In the end, the glowing, energy princess floats down from the skies in a beam of light and melts into Milo's arms where she regains consciousness and her human form⊠just in time to see a civilization reborn and thriving again⊠the result of honoring our divine selves.
Isnât it funny how, after all of it, Kida gives away that whole mountain of treasure to Miloâs crew and helps them back to the surface⊠not like the Atlantean economy would need any gold, right?... But, interestingly, the real treasure Kida and Milo value is knowledge, so much so that Milo even stays behind to help the Atlanteans re-learn their culture⊠which is fantastic cause one of the opening scenes of Atlantis II - not as good btw, but still fun... shows a school teaching the language..so we know he succeeds. Most of the temples seem to be a blend of East Asian and Mayan architecture too, which not only links the story to the Maya themselves, the supposed Atlantean priesthood but also helps get that picture of Greek columns and temples out of your head, which was one of the original intentions behind the design.
Bringing this to a close, if you ever wanted to see a faithful reproduction of the New Age idea of Atlantis, then this is like the perfect movie to go and watch...and while it didnât do great at the box office, it has kind of become a cult classicâŠ. and Tom Holland might star as Milo in a live-action remake. Heâs also playing Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie. What?! This story's message of exploration, adventure, inclusion, and the importance of living in harmony with our consciousness are all lessons that kids learned early on by watching this, and that you can too. While some Bible moms have tried to point out hidden Illuminati or Freemason symbols in it, like the All-Seeing Eye and Quartered Circle, the ultimate lessons of this movie are ones of love, compassion, and caution of hubris and putting our ego above a community.
The whole nature of this movie is even funnier when you read Norma Milanovich and Shirley McCuneâs works that argued that Walt Disney himself was a newly Ascended Master whose mission on Earth was to create an awareness of the elementals, the animals, and to integrate the existence of such kingdoms into human consciousness⊠While we donât know about that..itâs pretty fun to think about. Maybe Disneyâs Atlantis was more in line with Waltâs vision than everyone realized! So until next time, Pah geh sheh nelekh, Gah Moak!
