Ross leans against a wall in the large room and contemplates the tumbler of brandy in his hand. George does not skimp, this amber liquid is quite good. Ross is well acquainted with fine brandy, risking much himself to import the best available through less than legal means. He scans the room, it is between dances and most of the guests are clustered together in groups, engaged in flattery and idle conversation. He had quarreled with his wife an hour ago, he knew his surly attitude and lack of attention had angered Demelza, and he could certainly understand why. Yet at that moment he was incapable of bending, of admitting he was wrong. And rather than making it up with her, he continued playing cards. His grief and outrage over the disgusting treatment of his friend Jim Carter, which ultimately led to his untimely death, had rendered him powerless to rise above his mood. But by God, Demelza is the last person to deserve the sharp-edge of his ire, and now he feels incredibly ashamed at his behavior. 

He watches his wife chatting merrily with several solicitous gentlemen across the ballroom, without a doubt she has many would-be suitors were her husband not standing in the way. She glances at him, her eyes still flashing with annoyance and hurt, she is ravishing and haughty and so very tempting. Demelza is wearing a new gown, its fabric selected particularly for this occasion. It is the color of Spring and covered with delicate leaves and stems. Her décolletage is framed with the tiniest diaphanous ruffle which projects the opposite of demure, rather than disguising, it accentuates her bust and she is fully aware of its effect. 

Ross has had enough drink this night, he sets his glass aside and walks over to speak quietly with the leader of the small orchestra assembled in the southern corner of the room, a few coins are discreetly handed over. While likely the poorest of manners to divert the musical program toward his personal goals, he cares not and strides determinedly toward Demelza. She sees him coming and her brows gather in anticipation of protest but Ross does not give her an opportunity to refuse. He takes her by the hand and leads her to the center of the dance floor. Demelza initially resists his embrace, she is still put-out and a little embarrassed by their earlier exchange… but then she turns her head and looks into his eyes and her anger melts away, he can be damnable at times but his feelings for her are written on his face. 

Ross takes her in his arms as the music strikes up and begins to dance a dance that he has only seen once before, he holds his beautiful wife, his hand sitting familiarly at her waist, and leads her in The Walse. The steps are not truly known to him but he believes he can manage a fair representation, he has some skill at dancing though rarely used. The onlookers at the time he first witnessed this exercise were scandalized by the closeness of its participants, and from the expressions on many a face, they are once again. He grins inwardly at this but Demelza’s visage, her fine features gazing up at him, he is nearly overcome with desire. She is his complete focus, the only thing in this world that truly matters. That he could act an idiot and lose sight of that, well, he is an imperfect man.

They are a vision to behold on the ballroom floor, Ross expertly guiding in his version of this dance, Demelza following his lead like a woman who has been trained in this since girlhood. Their bodies move together instinctually as one, gracefully drifting and turning and whirling together. All eyes are upon them, but theirs are only for each other.

So here are the deets...

Sign ups will be open from February 20- March 1.

Get To Know Me’s will start dropping in late April or early May.

Posting Dates will be in July, stretching into August if needed.

For those new shipmates not familiar with the Captain Swan Supernatural Summer, this is an event I created back in 2018 to address the woeful lack of Werewolf Killian fics. And we have succeeded many times over!!! The event is open to everyone. The only requirement is the fic or artwork has to be CS focused and supernatural in nature. In past years we’ve had werewolf, vampire, fae, selkie, soulmate, shapeshifter, witch, ghost, and many, many others!! 

All of the past years fics can be found on ao3 here.

Any fic length is fine, from a 100 word Drabble to a 250,000 word epic MC. Any rating is fine. Any type of artwork is fine, from using traditional mediums of paint and drawing, to digital artwork to videos to gifs. Artists can elect to do their own original artwork and/or they can be paired with a fic writer to do artwork for the fic being written. And we certainly hope to have enough artists sign up that we can pair every author with an artist that wants to be paired. So please! SPREAD THE WORD!!!

Signups open a week from tomorrow, and this post will be reblogged daily on this blog as well as this years mods’ blogs in order for the most people to see the announcement!!

For the Writers Ask Game that you put together would you answer #2, 9, and 18?

Also, I think you know that "What Lies Beneath the Mask" is probably always going to be my Number One Unbeaten Favorite of all your stories -- It's just SO GOOD!!! But as far as scenes that live rent-free in my mind, I think about wolf form Killian curling up in the bed with Emma for protection and comfort in "Varcolac" an awful lot. <3 (And I'd be lying if I didn't say that I go into high school the teacher's lounge to get more coffee some days and chuckle to myself thinking about that little school-set one shot you wrote - though nothing nearly that exciting ever actually happens! ;p)

You are the sweetest! And I am the worst for taking so long to reply.

I also love that scene from Varcolac, and can't help but think about the art @flipperbrain made for it (I MISS YOU, KRIS!!!)

And you going into your Teacher's Lounge for a cup of coffee and thinking about THOSE SCENES makes me want to simultaneously cringe and laugh out loud!

And of course... HAPPY SIGH that you still love WLBtM so much 💖, and shoutout to @cocohook38 for all the amazing artwork she made for that fic. It still makes me giddy!

I answered that on a previous Ask. Basically, I just want to engage with my followers / readers / fellow crewmates more in 2024. I know many have moved on, but I see new fans coming in all the time and I miss some of the silly fun we used to have on the regular here.

Jumping right into it, I noticed that there aren't any video edits based on any cs fanfics (atleast, I haven't seen any- I'd love to see them though). So when writers block got the best of me, I decided to try my hand at fic edits.

During this process, I set myself a few criterias:

1. Use fanart as much as possible and try to avoid using scenes from the show.

2. Keep the use of Jen and Colin's pictures minimal.

I set myself these criterias as a lot of book edits (especially the ones on ig) tend to usually not use pictures of the actual actors. But instead, pictures of individuals with similar attributes.

Before, I stop my Ted talk *eyes bottom of the transcript jokingly* I just wanna say:

1. I discovered so much fanart and really talented artists (which filled me with joy and longing- made me wish I was a part of the fandom in the early days).

I love the Twilight Zone. I mean, to probably a weird degree. Well, not too weird, but I love the hell out of it. Anyway, a few years back, a friend of mine gave me a copy of a book her company was doing from Rod Serling’s wife where there were a number of authors writing different short stories, and one in particular stuck with me. I’m sure I’ll think of 9000 books that should go in this place instead, but for now, here it is. 

For these next four, I’d go off forever and then also continually debate about what order they should go in, so, for now...

Umm... Well, you know, we don’t exactly know HOW men give birth, you know... I mean... maybe the hatchets come WITH the babies and they sort of... cut their way out? or maybe the not-so-proud papas just... find one in their hand at the same time as their tummy grows 50 bajillion sizes and an angry little baby monster starts trying to come out of them? I don’t know, man. It’s, like, magic and stuff. It’s... mystifying. Yeah. That sounds legit.
