Katniss’ words hit Dean in the gut, his face twisting, trying to hold himself together. He has always been the brave one, but so has she. His tongue slides over his lips as his hand scrubs down his face and he leans back in the chair. “What if I don’t wanna be the brave one anymore?” he speaks in a voice much shakier than he intends. “What if I don’t wanna put up with all this CRAP? I just wanna live my life and keep doin’ what I’m doin’. I don’t wanna lose Sammy, I don’t wanna lose you, I can’t keep watchin’ people I know die, Katniss. I can’t do it.”

Chasing Cheetah - Steve & Katniss

There was a squelching sound when Master Chief Trevor’s boot touched the ground, and the foul smell they’d been following got so much worse. He cringed inwardly—he hoped—the only betrayal of how disgusted he felt by what he’d just stepped in was the tightening of his jaw and his shoulders. He couldn’t help but cough, and if the corpse he’d almost danced with had been his first, the cough might’ve been the opening act before a good solid puking fit.

“Be careful,” he cautioned Everdeen although he probably didn’t need to. She was a nurse. They were used to death too, and he didn’t doubt that she’d seen some horrible shit since she’d been recruited by ARGUS. Etta and Amanda didn’t bring in lambs. They only wanted wolves and badgers—he was never quite sure which he was.

“This was Minerva’s kill.” Crouching and doing his best not to touch anything, his fingers hovered over a gaping hole Cheetah had torn in the victim’s throat, and a cloud of flies launched to get away from the threat he posed. “She got hungry. He’s not one of ours. Must’ve come from the village we passed yesterday. No question how he died.”

Steve rocked back on his heels and stepped back from the corpse, taking a deep breath that didn’t help and then washed his mouth out with tepid water from his canteen. He wanted to rinse his entire body in Listerine. “Think she got him yesterday. We’re getting closer.”

No, she surely wasn’t.

Reminded Benny just a little of himself, the year he was reaped. Coulda made three of her from one of him, tall and strong as he was back then, head and shoulders above most of the tributes, even the careers from Districts 1 and 2, been born and raised to fight. She made weapons from whatever she could put her hands on, same as he’d done, to feed himself, to feed the homeless of District Four. Mostly the children of rebellious parents. Or the orphans of rebellious parents.

He didn’t respond. A crossbow with no bolts wasn’t gonna get him far, so Benny was whittling, wondering why in the hell the famous Katniss Everdeen was crouched by the same tree he was. Should oughtta offer her a pair of long splinters to prop those pretty eyes open, since apparently, she was afraid to sleep.

He shrugged. “Could serve you well. Might not.” Depended if it made her stupid or not.

In the trees, there were things shifting, growling, growing. How the damn Capitol had managed to tear a hole in reality, throw them all into another dimension (they’d called it Purgatory, and Benny was starting to wonder if that might not be literal) he hadn’t yet figured out, but since knowing wasn’t likely to get them home he didn’t much worry. He’d made his peace; they didn’t intend for anyone to get back, not this time. Wasn’t even convinced there were video cameras. Hadn’t seen a single fuckin’ tracker jacker, not a single acid storm. Only death. Purgatory full of trouble makers; the Capitol had already won.

There were screams. Maybe the worst Benny had ever heard. He tried not to think on it.

“If it comes down to you or me, though, cher, you run. Save yourself. Couple o’ years, my looks’ll go,” he joked, waving at his face, the terrible scars he’d been wearing since he’d emerged the victor more than twenty years ago. “Maybe you’re not afraid to die, but me…”

He winked.

While it could just as well be that his paranoia was getting the better of him, he was fairly sure that SOMEONE had been tailing him and he'd seen her around enough times to start feeling suspicious. Usually he wouldn't have pulled the gun but nerves kicked before he could stop them and it was pulled out on reflex, though it wasn't actually loaded, it would at least be a good deterrent for most people.
