The swing set

This has been something I’ve been wanting to draw for a LONG time. Based on a headcanon someone told me a long while ago of the boys going back to see their childhood swing only to see it’s broken and rundown. Stan is clearly upset but brushes it off like it’s nothing, but Ford is very determined to fix their childhood swing because they both cherish it deeply.

It's a time-honoured tradition- every time Sam comes across Izzy (and Ed) in their travels, he asks Izzy to marry him. And every time, Izzy turns him down.

At this point, Sam is asking more for the sake of it than any belief Izzy will ever say yes, a remnant of childhood dedication touched with 30 years of heartbreak and regret- though even now, a small part of him still holds out hope. Sam's promises have only got more extravagant over the years, from a job as his first mate, to a captaincy, a fleet at his command, a whole fucking island if that's what Izzy wants- but he knows it isn't though, not really. If Izzy was ever going to agree to marry him, to leave his life and go with Sam, it wouldn't be for anything Sam could offer him. Izzy never did care for flashy shows of wealth, for a ship or to be captain. The only thing that ever mattered to him was loyalty given, and loyalty shown in return. 

It all comes to a head after Stede left and came back, after Izzy lost a toe, lost his leg. Sam hasn't seen him since before things with Ed started to really slide off the rails, before stress permanently set into the lines of Izzy’s face. So, when he sees a dishevelled man with a hoof for a leg in a no-name port, he doesn't even consider the idea that he might know him. It's only when he turns towards him, and Sam catches a glance at those oh too familiar tattoos, he realises this is Izzy, his Izzy, that stands before him.

Knowing Izzy's discomfort with pity, he doesn't treat him any differently than he would in years gone by, positioning himself in Izzy's line of sight before approaching and sweeping him up into a bone crushing hug. 

“Israel-goddamn-Hands!” he exclaims, as Izzy grumbles back a begrudging “Samuel-fucking-Bellamy”, a tradition almost as old as their friendship itself. Izzy might not hug him back, but he can’t keep the corner of his mouth from twitching, just for a second.

(If Sam holds Izzy a little tighter and a little longer than usual, well. That's his business)

By the time Sam lets go, most of the crew has appeared in the town square, drawn in by the commotion. They may have given Izzy his leg and welcomed him as one of them, but still there’s an underlying tension, with nobody quite ready to set aside everything that happened before the Kraken. Seeing him cosying up to an unknown man sets everyone on edge, unsure whether to come to their first mate’s aid, or to assume that they've been betrayed once again.

When Ed sees that the yelling was Sam, his hand goes tense where it's held in Stede's. He knows the routine, has seen it more times than he can count, but as he watches them part he realises that this is the first time in a long time he's unsure of what Izzy's response will be.

Knowing that something’s different, knowing that Izzy's feeling vulnerable already, Sam doesn't go for the same flashy proposal he’s been giving for years. He doesn't promise Izzy the world, he doesn't cause a scene (or, any more of a scene than he already has, anyway). He looks at the fractured man in front of him, takes his face in his hands, and says the exact same thing to him he said when they were little more than boys. “Israel, I have to ask you. I know what you'll say, but I have to try. Come with me. Marry me and sail away with me. I'll keep you safe”

And Izzy… hesitates. He glances over at Ed, at Stede, and says to Sam “...We’re staying in port for a week. Ask me again then”

That's the moment Sam knows there is something deeply, horribly, wrong. He's not just looking at an Izzy who got seriously injured in a fight and is struggling to cope, this is something so much bigger than that- and that Ed has something to do with it. Izzy wouldn't even be considering leaving if he didn't. Whether it was negligence or something more sinister, Sam doesn't yet know, but he intends to find out.

okay but going back to zagreus and melinoë for a second... i think when they meet they're going to have a LOT to work on with each other if they're going to get along. zagreus likes to push boundaries and he doesn't like leaving things unresolved if there's something he can do about it and melinoë is a LOT like hades in so many ways (temperment and sometimes her tone in particular). they're going to get on each others' nerves. they're going to drive each other up the wall. they're going to need time to get to know each other and understand each other and they might not get the chance to during hades 2 (what with mel's task seeming pretty nonstop. i know she's a goddess but girl don't you get tired???).

literally the easiest way to make someone care about a character and make them feel well-rounded beyond basic traits like personality, sexuality, ethnicity, etc, is to give them an actual character arc, and it’s shocking how many people do not seem to fully realize this

you cannot just cram a bunch of tropes. tropes are not the main event, they are tools to tell the story you wish to tell. emotional impact comes from the lead up, so you can’t just jump ahead and expect the payoff to work. “I want this character to just ___ already!” but they’re not there yet. that’s where the arc comes in - how do they get there?

and! most importantly, and this is something I really want people to think about when writing - the most important relationship your character should have, always, is with the world and society around them. defining your character purely through their interactions with other characters are, I find, how a lot of female characters end up feeling flat or not engaging with the themes as much as the male characters, and also how queer and non-white characters wind up as devices for other characters’ development instead of being more fleshed out

Do you ever think that maybe Gabriel dying could be a canon event ?? What if he's supposed to die in every universe ? Just like how Emilie dying is reoccurring event in each one.

We obviously don't know about the movie universe since the other part is still yet to come. But just think about Gabriel dying in the Paris special universe. Well, since the Gabriel in that universe is good and doesn't want to bring Emelie back. So, obviously his death won't be due to a wish. The only way I can think that he might die is maybe he was ultimately caught by the The Supreme and had to face his fatal fate ?? Im just bluffing im sorry but when I had this thought I just had to type this out for some reason.

another delicious plotpoint about the potential of gerrard becoming interim captain of the 118 (if not in charge at a higher level) is that: hen and chim know what it's like to work with the guy, eddie probably knew guys like him in his army days, tommy (still over at 217?) was under garrard the longest.. but buck? buck has only ever known one captain and he found a father in bobby. i think he would struggle the most with working under someone like gerrard, especially hearing the stories from the others, and now with his newfound bisexuality. ravi would also struggle, but ravi has been a minority his whole life whereas buck is new to being on the minority side of things. i don't want gerrard to stick around but i do see the potential for a 3+ episode drama arc.

a second sick fic in as many days? yes - xeph & honeydew fic

“Xeph? Friend, you look paler than usual, an’ that's saying something because you glow in the dark.” Honeydew could see it clearer as they hopped off the carriage, making their way back to the shitty cave they’d made home over the past year. It was worse for wear after Israphel had blown it to shite, but it’d been the only place they called theirs after the final battle. Still, the semi-regular trips into the slowly recovering Mistral were doing great things - both for Honeydew’s ability to eat something not terrible and for Xephos to be around people. A weird sort, that one - so self conscious and snippy but faded away without people to talk to. He’d been entertaining some nosey children with a dramatised (and sanitised) tale of one of the earlier legs of their adventure and they’d been near clambering all over him - touching the golden buttons of his coat and his leather scabbard. He’d borne it all with surprising grace - Honeydew hadn't known he’d even liked kids until the first little bugger had tugged at his coat with sticky fingers, doe eyed and shy. 

The drive back in the carriage no one would let them pay for had taken around 2 hours, and Honeydew hadn’t been overly surprised that Xephos had dozed off, but the fact he looked far worse after his nap was what had him worried. Xephos blinked at the question, seemingly needing a second to process what he had said. 

“Ah, sorry friend. I’m well enough.” 

Well enough - well that was a red flag and a half. He thanked the driver and grabbed their crap from the back, not letting Xephos take anything before walking the last of the way to their home. Xephos trailed behind him, each stumble sending more alarm bells ringing. When Xephos almost collapsed onto the bed after what couldn’t have been more than an 8 minute walk, Honeydew was really concerned. 

He walked over, noticing how Xephos was burying himself under the quilt despite the warm day, the exercise and his own thick coat. Ah. He rested a palm to the taller man’s head and was startled by just how high his temperature already was. Xephos melted into his cooler palm with a soft noise of relief. 

“Xeph? When did you get sick, you silly nonce.” Xephos tugged his hand away, replacing it with the cooler one that hadn’t yet been warmed by his fever. 

“One of the kids, I think.” Honeydew frowned. 

“Already? That was - fuck maybe 5 hours ago at the most.” Xephos nodded against his palm. 

“My immune system’ll be shit. Didn’t think about it.” 

“Immune system? You’ve never got sick before.” 

Xephos laughed, soft and tired. “I didn’t - didn’t grow up here. You know how you’ll get something as a kid and then never again?” The connection formed in Honeydew’s mind. “And then, it was just you for a while. And then we didn’t really see anyone, or we kept dying, and it wasn’t a problem, so I forgot about it.” Xephos hadn’t sounded so dazed since he’d been last concussed. 

“That doesn’t explain why you’re so sick already, though.” Xephos went to swap his hands again, and let out a whine when it hadn’t cooled enough for his liking. Honeydew grabbed a clean washcloth and dipped it in some water, laying it across his head. Xephos shivered, grabbing Honeydew’s hand anyway. 

“It’s - complicated. Head hurts ‘dew.” He let Xephos whine for a bit before prodding him to keep going. “It’s - evolution - if it killed your Dad you wouldn’t be here. And then there is some stuff with maternal antibodies and -” he let out a huff, tugging at Honeydew’s hand. Following the guidance of his near delirious friend, he let himself be dragged onto the bed, his hand placed firmly in Xephos’ hair. He hadn’t known how needy Xephos could get when he was sick - it was cute. 

And then the implication hit. 

“Wait - this could kill you?” he nearly shouted. Apparently that was far too loud and Xephos cringed away from him painfully, shivering. “Ah, shite, sorry, sorry.” He adjusted the cloth back and gently pet his hair, feeling the slightly clammy texture of his friend's skin as the fever sweat started to kick in. He was starting to panic now. “It could kill you?” whispered, taking in the grey cast and the dulling of his freckles.

“Maybe - or not. ‘Dun know.” He shivered pathetically, pawing unhappily at the blankets he’d only just clambered under, trying to wriggle out of his coat and pants. “Saw it - they didn’t give the field tech PPE, she didn’t make it.” There were too many words in that mess that Honeydew didn’t understand, and the ones he did painted a horrid picture. “But I’ll be back - so. ‘S ok.” He kind of wanted to shake his friend, but settled for gathering more cloths and a basin of water. 

“Of course it matters if it hurts, Xeph. And -” neither of us have died from sickness, he thought, what if it's different. He thought better about saying that out loud. If Xephos wasn’t well enough to consider the option when he was the one of them that catastrophized - well. He didn’t need the stress making it worse.

It only got worse as the night wore on. Xephos slowly stopped being able to hold a conversation, stopped being able to tolerate the gentle touch of Honeydew’s hand in his hair as the fever made everything painful. The worst part was the sickening wheeze he picked up when late night moved to early morning. He looked grey, the tips of his fingers were near black, and the only noises he was capable of making were soft moans of pain whenever Honeydew had to replace the cool cloths across his forehead and arms. Honeydew wouldn’t have thought he was capable of sleeping in a state of stress like that, but he blinked and awoke with the mid morning sun peeking in through the windows. The bed was empty, but the smells of illness lingered. Something like horror crept into his chest and he ran outside, Xephos standing hale and hearty in the yard, shovel in hand.

There was a freshly turned over mound of earth next to him, 6 feet long and 2 feet wide. 

“Oh, friend - thank you. Sorry about last night - I just. I thought I’d set things to rights before you woke up.” There was a smudge of dirt across his nose, the image charming but the implications horrific. 

“Xeph -” Honeydew didn’t know what to say. ‘Why didn’t you wake me?’ was childish and the ‘I’m so sorry I couldn’t fix it.’ was too much, stuck in his throat like a barbed hook in a fish’s mouth.

“Friend?” 

Honeydew bit everything down and shot his friend a tired smile that rang utterly false. “Sorry Xeph, I’m still frazzled. We have pastries from town inside, and I can set the fire if you want a cuppa.” Xephos smiled brightly, leading him back inside. 

“Sounds delightful, friend!” There was dirt under his fingernails.

Hehe ty Ari, I had to think on this for a bit cause I don't tend to do modern AUs, but I think what I came up w is pretty fun and silly. As you can probably tell, I like forcing them to be in situations. This is very personal to me, but I love to imagine them as foreign language professors in a relatively small department. Fundamentally they should get along, as they have very similar backgrounds, but they have to fight for resources, so they despise each other…yet feel an inexplicable pull to each other and can’t stop bumping into each other. Anytime one of their students references even just the other’s courses, they just can’t help themselves from making some petty comment, like: “Oh you’re going on an abroad trip? But it’s with Dr. Vettel? That trip sounds cool, but I wouldn’t want to be stuck with him that long.” “Spanish? Oh yeah I wouldn’t take any classes with Dr. Alonso, I’ve heard he’s a pretty ruthless grader.” But on one fateful day, the department head decides that as a bonding activity, they will have to accompany the French professor on a multilingual abroad trip as additional guides. Oh no, their planes seats are next to each other, uh oh the hostel messed up and now they have a joint room, uh oh! Is it soulmates if they’re constantly forced by outside forces to constantly be around each other? They don’t have a lot of obligations as they’re mainly just in France, so they have a lot of free time and don’t want to be alone, so they begrudgingly hang out. And now that they’re away from the hypercompetitive environment, it’s just them walking around on the quaint French town like “omg you like [blank] too??” And then in a couple semesters after the trip, they run a joint linguistics history class, and finish each others sentences and grade papers together, and everyone wishes they'd go back to pretending to hating each other. The petty remarks were more palatable than having to watch them practically commit HR violations in front of a class of innocent students bystanders

okay i know they are canonically obsessed with each other but. the song is in some ways about feeling like you’re failing in your relationship and being not quite as obsessed with them as they maybe are with you, and in this video of them talking about being a tandem, there is the slightest pause before swayman answers “do you miss him?” that makes me want to probe a wound. we’re not talking irl reasons of how that’s an absurd question (how do you miss him. you’re coworkers you’re seeing each other all the time) we’re talking that maybe this whole goalies-in-love thing got blown out of proportion and now swayman’s having to buy into the bit too hard. linus loves it & everyone’s asking about their bromance & how they love each other so much and the thing is—linus is safe. he’s got a wife and plausible deniability and jeremy? jeremy is gay. sure, he can crack jokes and people-please but the more people ask the more they're going to find out until maybe they find out something jeremy doesn't want them to know. and the longer this goes on, the more jeremy has to sit at linus' dinner table with linus and his beautiful wife and pretend like he isn't a little bit in love with him. and you know what? the longer it goes on and linus doesn't dial it down jeremy does stop being in love with him, because it just feels cruel, until he finally is done enough that he stops biting his tongue and ruins the moment.
