I can't believe I'm actually planning to come out as non binary in two days. It's to my best friend who is the first irl person I'm going to tell and who I know is going to be incredibly supportive but it's still so damn scary. My endlessly self-doubting mind is still regurgitating narratives like "it's just a phase" and "you're just imagining this for attention or to be a special snowflake" which I know are bullshit but they're still there. I've always felt queer somehow and my queer friends often tell me "there's no way you're straight" but since I'm afab and liked cis men 95% of the time I always just thought I was just a 'bi-curious' straight woman. But then I got into a short, yet eye opening relationship with a non binary person and realized I'm not only attracted to cis men but also to gender non conforming people and a lot, actually. And that made me question not only my sexuality but also my gender identity. I still haven't figured out whether it's just gender envy I am feeling with them or whether I genuinely want to be with them (ah yes, the age-old question), so yeah, that crisis is still going on. And I still somehow feel like a woman, but definitely not only and not all the time. I thought for a long time that because I still somehow felt like a woman that it meant that I couldn't be non binary. But now I know how broad the term is and that it definitely fits my gender experience. Looking back now, I see so many signs that I was non binary all this time. Being completely obsessed with androgynous womxn from a young age, feeling deeply uncomfortable in feminine coded clothes like dresses or skirts, feeling amazing and confident in gender neutral clothing, progressively liking and identifying less and less with my birthname, a general sense of unease and feeling deeply out of place, especially in very heteronormative environments, etc., etc. None of these have to mean that someone is non binary, but for me, together with everything else, they just make sense. So yeah, if anyone's still reading this, I'm going to do this aaah, wish me luck

Let's talk about Radical Feminists and TERFs: Another collection of hate.
(Content Warning: Pretty much everything, but especially transmisia, particularly transmisogyny, eugenics and other Nazi rhetoric, racism, intersexism, slur usage, mentions of not sfw topics/not sfw sentences and mentions of sexual assault. Reader discretion is especially advised on this, as this is probably one of the most triggering posts I've ever created). Additional Disclaimer: Like with my "Let's Talk about Exclusionists" post, I've collected multiple screenshots of the horrid things TERFs and other Radfems have said or done. Not all of those screenshots are mine, some of them are things I have found on the web. Credits to especially radfemstruggles (Twitter), terfism-harms-women, terf-cringe and other anti-terf pages/blogs I've found these on. As always, I don't condone harassment. Just because someone is a TERF doesn't give you the right to harass them, especially considering a good chunk of TERFs I've noticed are literal teenagers (of course, that never excuses their actions). Just report them and block. Pride month is over, but that doesn't mean queer folks are going away.
However, neither are the bigots, and especially not the TERFs. Nope. They're still out there and as harmful as ever. "Now, wait a minute Shadow. What even *IS* a TERF anyway?" Well, you're gonna be in for one hell of a ride, so buckle up sunshine.
TERF is short for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. Put simply, Transphobic "feminists". TERFs align themselves with Radical Feminism- Radfem for short, a very extreme branch of feminism. However, not every Radfem is a TERF, though Radfems are still best to be avoided due to their extreme ideology. (Likewise, not every feminist is a Radfem, let alone a TERF). How to Identify a TERF: Common Dogwhistles and Nicknames. TERFs won't call themselves a TERF by themselves. In fact, some consider the term to be a slur (News flash: no it is fucking not lmfao). There are many dogwhistles, and I can't fit all of them in here. However here's the most common ones: Gender Critical - a very *VERY* common identifer by TERFs. MERF - Short for Male Exclusionary Radical Feminist. It basically calls trans women men and also ignores the fact that there are, contrary to popular belief, men that are also feminists. "TERF is a slur/Cis is a slur" - A common dogwhistle. The latter is also used by transphobes in general. Misandrist/Proud Misandrist - Misandrist refers to hatred of men. The term originated from misogynists as a counter to feminism, however the term has been reclaimed by radfems. However, a good majority of folks who identify with this term are transphobic, so it should best be avoided. Womyn/Wombyn and their varients - Alternative spellings of "woman/women". Per Wikipedia, "Some writers who use such alternative spellings, avoiding the suffix "-man" or "-men", see them as an expression of female independence and a repudiation of traditions that define women by reference to a male norm." The term "womxn" is also used in some cases, however that term should not be a sole identifier, as "womxn" is also sometimes used by agender individuals. "Womyn" alone is also not a sole identifier, as there are some who try to reclaim it (that and there's also something about it being used in AAVE, but I can't find much info on that). However, "Womyn-born woman" should be an instant red flag. KAM - Short for K-ll all men (i). Even without the TERFy connections, I don't think I need to explain why this is bad. --It should also be noted that any variation of "all men are trash" is inherently TERFy, no matter how you look at it. You'll see why in a bit. Hygenic - Another term used by TERFs. It also references eugenics, explained further in this post. FebFem - Short for "Female Exclusive Bisexual Female". This term is common in TERF spaces, especially with Bi TERFs. However, there have been attempts to reclaim the term from the group. Similar groups that overlap - Should also be avoided:
SWERF - Short for Sex Worker Exclusionary Radical Feminist. This group is against the objectification of women, sex trafficking and the exploitation of women in pornography. Sounds harmless right? Wrong. While it appears good intentioned at first, most SWERFs are against sex work overall, believing that women can't *truly* partake in sex work willingly. This group also overlaps with TERFs, 99% of the time, though not every SWERF is a TERF. Due to sex work being a topic that gets pretty NSFW, I won't be going over this group in this post any further outside of mentions, since I'm not qualified to talk about NSFW topics as a minor. There are, however, probably several other posts that talk about this particular group. TEHM - Short for Trans Exclusionary Homosexual Males. The same as TERFs, but with homosexual men instead of women. Enby Skeptics - A group skeptical of nonbinary identities, as shown by the name. Some TERFs may identify with this term. Longsword Lesbian/Gravity Knife Gays/Gold Star Lesbian - See here for more information regarding these groups. LGB/LGB Drop the T - A movement that claims that being Trans isn't queer. It should go without saying - TERFs aren't harmless. TERFs aren't just some weird basement dwellers on the internet. Nope. They exist *everywhere*. You know JK Rowling? She's a TERF! And probably one of the most recognizable TERFs out there (she's also a lot more bigoted beyond transphobia, so yeah). However, this post will mostly cover the online aspect of TERFism, since even the online world can seep into danger in real life. So, without further ado, let's get into the hate. Note: This post covers Radical Feminism in general, however the main focus is TERFs and similar groups. Of course, you have the transphobia, slurs and suibait.
Tumblr media
(Image: Two Tumblr anons side by side. One word has been covered in red. One anon reads "You troons sure love playing the victim. 😂😂No won-der people can't stand you". The second reads "Hng yourself gendie". End ID).
Tumblr media
(Image ID: An anon that reads ""They can't even say woman" Not everyone who menstruates is a woman." The reply is "Yes they are. Nonbinary isn't real, only two genders exist. Gender and sex are the same thing. Your personality and clothing preference doesn't define your sex. Your biology does. Have a good day!" End ID) ...Having pronouns is misogynistic? Really? You know women have pronouns too... right?
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A user's twitter bio. Their username is covered. The bio reads "All I think about is karma. Pronouns in bio signify membership of misogynist cult". End ID) Seriously they're not even trying to hide the transphobia.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Tumblr bio that reads "trans activism is misogyny").
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A post from user "radfem-moira" that reads "Transwomen are men and it shows when they speak").
However, the transphobia, as despicable as it is, is not the only thing that makes TERFs dangerous. TERFs have also even went as far as to advocate for violence, as shown here.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A post from user "terf-vengeance" featuring artwork of an individual wearing a crop top covered in blood, reading "I punch trans activists". Below the artwork reads "Is it okay to punch transtrenders? Yes two thousand times, yes, punch them!" Also, here is something I've noticed. Notice how Radfems talk about abuse, particularly sexual abuse. In conversations regarding such a topic, women are usually brought up as the victims. Male victims are almost never mentioned, and when you bring them up they accuse you of not caring about male victims because you brought them up when talking about women. Well, you might not think much of it, but it goes deeper than just misinformation and being insensitive. TERFs don't care about male victims either. In fact, they don't care about sexual assault survivors at all if you look hard enough. In fact, if the victim is a male, they actually *encourage* it. And will sometimes admit to even *wanting* to do the same thing to men. Here's one *literally* repeating a common misogynistic argument, but with men at the focus.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Twitter post with the individual's username and profile picture covered. The post reads "Males are only tools for sex and labor. THATS IT". End ID). ...this post makes me sick just by looking at it alone.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Twitter post from a person named "aoi". Some information is covered. The post reads "Young boys are degenerates beyond any help. I wouldn't even oppose them getting their ass rped by grown men (they deserve that) if it wasn't for the risk that other grown ass men would also start to advocate for pedophilia on girls. I can't care less about boys". End ID). And this one is even *worse*
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Tumblr post featuring an anon asking "What are your thoughts on male sex workers?". The reply is "Male "sex workers" make up an incredibly tiny amount of "sex workers", and while I think prostituted men deserve to get out of it as well, they're pimped and rped by men, which makes it a male-on-male issue and not a priority for feminists"). The point of feminism is gender equality for ALL and fighting the patriarchy. This however is not feminism. This only shows that you don't actually care about gender equality. Here's one straight up admitting to want to abuse people.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Tumblr post with the individual's name blacked out. The post reads "i won't lie the urge to manipulate, gaslight and psychologically torture a man and lead him to suicide has been festering inside me for a while now. studying psychology too, i genuinely think i could pull it off. they grow attachments very easily and if i could just find one that was already mentally ill i think i could do it easily". End ID). ...All I'm gonna say about that one is that I hope this individual never EVER gets into a relationship or has kids, and if they're already in a relationship I genuinely feel sorry for their partner and I hope said partner leaves them. And here's someone who sent a sexual assault wish to a literal *minor* (And when called out on it they said the screenshot was "fake").
Tumblr media
(Image ID: Two Tumblr convos side by side, both have two messages, the first one reads, from stopglorifyingkillers, "I never called you a pedo, please point out where I had.". itchy-astroterf replies with "I hope your stupidity and misguided trust in trans gets you rped. Maybe then you'll see my fucking point.". The next convo reads, the first message from actuallyabused, "ah yes, you totally dont want anyone to get rped.". To which itchy-astroterf replies with "That's copyshopped, you dingus".) Oh yeah. You know how TERFs argue that "Trans women are predatory"? Well... about that. (Full post here - CW: Pedophilia, sexual assault, ableism, uncensored slur).
Tumblr media
(Image ID: Three posts from Tumblr user "homohooker". Reading, in this order, "You look beautiful with makeup on !", "You're so cute 😍😍😍 but this isn't gay babes this would be straight" and "Its a sexual orientation like being lesbian or gay lol you're a fucking"- the final word is blanked out. Next to the username reads either "taling to a minor" or "talking about pedophilia" in red text. End ID).
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Tumblr User's bio reading "Right back at it again" in bold black text. Below it reads "Riley, 21, femle, lesbian, map, kids can consent, men aren't lesbians". End ID) This one wasn't in the post but it's from the same person sooo.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Tumblr post that reads "ok but who doesn't think 12-17 year old girls are cute". End ID) Honestly, it's posts like these that make me *really* hope it's a troll. Also, let's not ignore the fact that TERFs and Radfems are more than transphobic. In fact, they can be other kinds of bigoted for example. Arophobia and biphobia in ONE.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A tumblr post from user "guncase". The post reads "Men cannot love. It is not in their nature to stay monogamous. You can look at the Bible, you can look at recorded history, you can look at present day - you can even look at your own experiences with men. Their love is one sided. They only love themselves, and not even each other. Find love within yourselves, your fellow women, and keep it safe, because the minute you let a Man find that love, the minute you lose it.") More biphobic crap. (I should also add that there is a huge debate in radfem spaces on whether or not bisexual women are welcome or if their "traitors", just throwing that out there).
Tumblr media
(Image ID: Two Tumblr posts/asks with usernames censored. The posts read, respectively, "because your nullye! stop making thousands of fucking accounds and talking to yourself. go d homophobe" and "first off you're female and if you said that you're actually dating a man that makes you fucking hetero. I really doubt that you're actually dating".) I'd also like to add I had to censor an anti-schizophrenic slur in the first one, so there's that.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Tumblr ask from an anonymous user. The ask reads "I hope you di in a violent and torturous way. I hope your genitals get mutilated. You are a disgusting person for even liking a male. Fuck you." End ID). And let's not forget the intersexism! (Disclaimer: Using it/it's pronouns is valid. Using "it" to describe *all* intersex people however... is shitty).
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Twitter post from an individual who's name is censored. The post reads "If you have XX chromosomes your pronouns are she, if you have XY chromosomes your pronouns are he. If you're intersex your pronouns are it. No way in hell I'm calling an intersex thing 'she'. You are not to appropriate my gender") Oh speaking of ableism, a lot of TERFs can be pretty fucking ableist too. ...Towards each other.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Tumblr post from user "femaleinsight". The post reads "i hope all autistic men fucking di the most painful fucking death that could ever be experienced on this earth. signed, a tired autistic woman <3") (First of all, what is it with disabled/neurodivergent terfs and wanting their own kind *dead*?) ...And some can also be PRETTY FUCKING RACIST :D (Had to censor the n-word in this one).
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Twitter post that reads "You know saying TERF to someone is like calling someone a ner. Which are terms that are insults and pejorative"). For context, MENA is short for Middle East and North Africa. Make what you will of this screenshot.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Twitter post that reads "if you see me with a machete randomly k*ll*ng mena males mind your business").
And sometimes, two and two can actually go together! A while back, I reblogged a that talked about TERFs using the word "hygienic" to mean "cis", like this individual shown below (Edit: link and reblog removed since OP fit my DNI + one of the folks adding to it was hacked and became a scambot, and I'd rather not expose people to that).
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Tumblr post from user "dykexy" that reads "petition to change the word "cis" to "hygienic"". End ID) Now you might be wondering, why am I bringing it up again? Well, someone in the comments of said post mentioned that it reminded them of "Racial Hygiene". Now, what is "Racial Hygiene"? Well... according to Wikipedia, it refers to "an approach to eugenics in the early 20th century, which found its most extensive implementation in Nazi Germany (Nazi eugenics)." So basically, it's eugenics. Specifically, Nazi eugenics. And with TERFs using the term "hygienic", they're saying that Trans people are inherently dirty by genetics. You might think this is a reach, but with everything shown here, there's clearly more to it.
Then again, what else do you expect from folks who do *this*
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Twitter post that reads "I'm not really going to spend another Saturday taking photos of trans people and running them through the sex-change filter on FaceApp to see what they looked like before, am i? I am". End ID) And act hypocritical (TERFS: "Trans women fetishize real women!" Also TERFS:)
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Twitter post that reads "It is so weird to me when trans people show a "before and after" when they get their first binder. If you have bad enough chest dysphoria to buy a binder in the first place, why are you showing the whole internet your tits?" End ID) And make nonsensical posts/replies like THIS.
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A Twitter user replying to a post that reads "Me and my good friend texting about the #BodyBlitz thing: "People need to get used to gender non-conforming bodies"". The reply reads "Gee, so you are in favor of rpe culture? Telling women to "get used" to rpists and perverts in women's spaces? Really?" End ID) Seriously. Don't let the "feminist" label fool you. TERFs and Radfems do not care about gender equality or women's rights. They are using the feminist label and women's rights as an excuse for their transphobia and other bigotry. They do not care about sexual assault survivors. They do not care about women of color. They do not care about disabled women. In fact, they only advocate for the very abuse they claim to be against. They advocate for the racism and nazism they claim to be against. Don't let them fool you.

Futures & Pasts | MRR #413
I took July off from writing my column because I was in the midst of some long solo drives across the cornfields of the Great Plains, but at least I was able to write a good chunk of this one while sitting around the Portland airport during a brutal ten-hour flight delay. You can support print media & read it in Maximum Rocknroll #413 (October 2017) - recently reissued Swiss femme-punks Neon are on the cover!
Tumblr media
There’s this really perfect moment in the 1987 documentary Athens, GA: Inside/Out where PYLON’s bassist Michael Lachowski is talking about how all of the members of the band were involved with making visual art when they first got together, and that the biggest priority when starting PYLON was “to make more art, and it was just going to be using instruments.” Post-punk is one of those imprecise concepts that has simultaneously come to mean almost anything and nothing, but whenever I’m trying to articulate exactly how and why the shift from punk to post-punk came about, Michael Lachowski’s Southern-drawled comment about making art with instruments plays out in my head every single time.
COME ON were a late ‘70s downtown New York City quintet who released a two-song 7” (“Don’t Walk on the Kitchen Floor”/“Kitchen in the Clouds”) in 1978 that basically set the archetype of jittery and tightly-wound post-punk that art-schooled oddballs across the United States would be following well into the 1980s. If COME ON songs were art made with instruments, the visual equivalent would be something like Andy Warhol’s Brillo boxes: minimalist, sharp-angled reflections of the banal minutiae of modern living. A CD-only COME ON anthology has been floating around since the late ‘90s, collecting the one official single, a two-song 7” from 1980 that the band apparently wasn’t aware had ever been released until it popped up on eBay, and about a dozen otherwise unreleased tracks that had been recorded live at CBGB in 1978 and the Hurrah in 1980, and now the entire collection is available on vinyl for the first time ever, as part of Manufactured Recordings’ archival reissue series. The combination of Jamie Kaufman’s buttoned-up, nervously yelped vocals, the intertwining guitar scribble and scratch from George Elliott and Elena Glasberg (the latter was still a high school student when she was recruited into COME ON!), and Ralf Mann’s stutteringly danceable, downtown funk basslines invited more than a few comparisons to the earliest incarnation of art-schooled oddballs-turned-major label new wave paragons TALKING HEADS, which is to say before David Byrne got the giant suit and developed the Afrobeat obsession. And in true More Songs About Buildings and Food style, Kaufman’s lyrics fixated on the mundane and the everyday, chronicling such topics as station wagon-driving housewives playing tennis, banging on the ceiling with a broom when a neighbor’s stereo is too loud at night, being snubbed by Mickey Mouse at Disneyland, and the complexities of the child/parent relationship—imagine Jonathan Richman’s narratives of (sub)urban naivety, if the MODERN LOVERS had formed in the post-(not proto-)punk era, drawn their primary inspiration from TELEVISION rather than the VELVET UNDERGROUND, and existed on the cusp of No Wave’s New York campaign of dissonance and anti-rock reductionism. One of the greatest, most essential American weirdo art-punk bands ever, no hyperbole. (Manufactured Recordings, comeonnyc.bandcamp.com)
I’ve been feeling less than enthusiastic about a lot of new music over the last few months, but one notable exception is the small crop of contemporary English bands who fit perfectly into the lineage of stripped-down yet incendiary post-punk that was originally born from the post-industrial urban decay and cultural depression of late ‘70s/early ‘80s Britain. The debut EP from Brighton’s STRUCTURE could just as easily been sourced from a Rock Against Racism set in 1979 as the Bandcamp page where I found them in 2017—think monochrome music for grey skies, brutalist concrete housing towers, and dimly lit subway stations, perfectly reflected in stark, repetitive rhythms, trebly stabs of guitar, and vocals delivered in caustic-tongued deadpan critiquing our society of the spectacle. The shadow of bands like CRISIS, the EX (at least their pre-1990s incarnation), and LACK OF KNOWLEDGE definitely looms over these three songs, as STRUCTURE manage to successfully skirt the wobbly line between post-punk and anarcho-punk while avoiding the overly conceptual art-for-art’s-sake tendencies of the former and the hollow, stencil font sloganeering of the latter. “Disco” lays out their musical and ideological allegiances pretty clearly, starting as a dark and foreboding bass-driven slowburner and gradually building into a frantic rush of slashing guitar and skittering drums, as the resignation of capitalist workaday drudgery (“I settled into the quiet life”, “I settled down in a good job”, etc.) gives way to shouts of desperate escapist fantasy (“I wanna go to the disco / I want to get out of my head”). Pair this one with SARCASM’s recent and very similarly-minded Malarial Bog EP on Static Shock for some serious double UK trouble. (structurestructure.bandcamp.com)
It’s also been helpful to be reminded that even in the fog of online media oversaturation and social network hype, it’s still possible to stumble on exciting, life-affirming music occupying the darkest corners the vast digital void. Aimless Bandcamp dérive has sort of become the modern analogue for my pre-teen/pre-internet channels of chance musical discovery (like off-hand references in zines or half-remembered songs played on late-night college radio programs), but when a band can post a demo online and almost instantly have it reblogged hundreds of times over, chancing upon something genuinely out-of-nowhere and off-the-radar still warms my cold, 21st century heart. As far as I can tell, Los Angeles post-punk trio MOVING MAPS have been around since at least 2015, and their first release, a self-released six-song EP called Eyes to Meet, quietly appeared this summer. Molly, Sonia, and Gillian take turns rotating between instruments, with all three layering their voices together into slightly askew sung-spoken harmonies over the sort of snaking bass lines, choppy beats, and brittle guitar chime spiritually descended from the rhythmic minimalism of OH-OK (who were making their own art with instruments alongside PYLON in early ‘80s Athens), or in a much more contemporary context, the knotted, melodic post-punk of GRASS WIDOW or HOUSEHOLD. The kinetic rhythms in “Wild Card” and “March” push the music forward with a calculated precision, just as the terse, clean guitar lines and briskly overlapping vocals gently pull them back, creating the sort of subtle tension that haunts you long after the songs end. Smart, effortlessly cool post-punk women do it yet again! (movingmaps.bandcamp.com)
A short-but-sweet recent find worth mentioning: the two-song, digital-only EP from Carrboro, North Carolina’s FITNESS WOMXN, whose needling, single-note guitar lines, disco-not-disco beats, and taut bass throb have all been ripped straight from the pages of the holy book of serrated femme-punk. “Erosion” is a frenzied MERCENÁRIAS-inspired hopscotch that tumbles from off-kilter, call-and-response vocals to an ecstatic group harmony of wordless “ahhhhs,” leading into to the skeletal and vitriolic GOOD THROB/FRAU-like punk clatter of “Living Hell” that culminates in a bratty sneer of “my best advice to you is repent / or get bent.” Straight fire. Click the source link to find a downloadable gif pack of #60 gifs of pinup model Tania Teyacapan. She is Lipan Apache, Chichimecatl Guachichil, and Black. She self-identifies as Chicana/x and also has chosen to heavily reject the terms “Latina” and “Hispanic” when referring to herself, so please respect that when casting her. so cast her respectfully.
From an interview with The Queen Sessions...
“Chicana is a very complex term since it can be interpreted in many ways. For myself, I use it more as an identifier for being someone who has indigenous decent south of the European man-made border. For many, it has become a way to say, “I am indigenous to this land,” but due to displacement, they do not have the privilege and/or access to say what tribal affiliation pertains to them. So in a way, it has become an encompassing label for those who want to return back to their roots but need a place to start all while rejecting European influenced labels such as Hispanic and/or Latina/x. I identify myself as an ally to those who identify as Chicana but in reference to being “Mexican-American.” I myself have been socialized to deny such national labels because I am an indigenous womxn, and being of Apache and Chichimecatl are the identifiers I take great pride in.”
These fit @tasksweekly tasks: #003: Gifs, #064: Apache,  #015: Indigenous Peoples of The Americas, #021: Black FCs, #075: Mexico

okay I have four!! for the au + ship
uhhhh they're are like crossovers so yea but!!
mailee hadestown au
platonic zutara or toph & katara aquamarine au
little mermaid yueki au
idk uhhh suki & sokka The Half of It au
ahah, anyway feel free to mix and match!
omg omg omg! tragically i have never seen aquamarine so i don't feel qualified to talk abt that BUT i would looooove to see more toph/katara friendship shenanigan fics. they're so much fun and it's so spicy when they don't get along and even SPICIER when they're scheming together
hadestown: bro bro bro bro bro if hadestown hades is read as capitalist billionaires who profit off of their warehouses and factories of employees that so easily turns into modern au ozai (w/ or w/o bending still in the universe)! with ursa as the super complicated figure of persephone damn. talk about love vs mitigation vs complicity wow. and then mai as eurydice ty lee as orpheus? like obvi if you stick w/ the hadestown script they have a tragic ending BUT when it make ozai/ursa your hades/persephone, atla canon introduces the twist of zuko and azula existing. does hades!ozai seem as powerful and infallible when he's actually a mortal now? what becomes of a god whose progeny can very well outlive him? how does eurydice and orpheus' story change when gods only appear as gods b/c of the unfair systems that feed into their power?
little mermaid: okay at first i was like yue is the mermaid b/c suki is a non-bender BUT if you think about kyoshi island's isolationist policy, that can totally translate to king triton's 'we-don't-go-above-the-surface' thing. ik ariel is the youngest of her siblings, but what if suki were the oldest of the mer-sibs and was therefore their default leader? then her kyoshi warriors literally become her sisters and the stakes re: suki's interest in the surface are intensified: not only is she disobeying her people's no-surface-interaction policy, but she's also betraying/abandoning one of the very things that she loves and that goes a long way in defining her and her personhood (mermaidhood?). idk who would be funniest as ursula but however it goes i think it'd be hilarious if ursula wasn't a vengeful villain, but just a batty queer witch who likes to help other people fuck around a find out. is ursla aunt wu? is ursula june? is ursula actually encapsulated by two people, e.g. sokka and zuko (little did suki know, zuko used to be human but sokka helped him become a merperson so they could be gay and mischievous in an underwater cave with two pet eels forever)? and and and maybe, when suki saves yue's life, it's not just a storm at sea — yue's kingdom is at war, and yue snuck off in men's clothing to help fight the fight. when suki first begs ursula to give her legs, it's just so she can check that yue's all right — she's been having nightmares about yue dying and her inky black hair suddenly turning white, and suki's haunted by the scene for reasons unknown. suki's voice isn't taken as a trade for legs but as an oopsy b/c ursula is young and still mastering her magic. suki finds that yue's hair hasn't turned yet but that can be some dramatic fantastical plot point later. the og little mermaid by mickey doesn't give a whole lot by way of duty/sacrifice/filial piety but finding a way to reshape the little mermaid to fit those themes, which are so central to yue and suki, could be a really fun challenge!
re: the half of it — i have seen it, but i rly didn't vibe with it thematically/structurally, mostly for the reasons pointed out in this article. it's a short but worthwhile read — just a heads up that it discusses rape culture/racial trauma/racialized and sexualized violence against asian womxn

Day 9: Common Misconceptions of Hecate
Many of the misconceptions of Hecate are based on the fearful and derogatory stereotypes of witches and other powerful womxn. Others are nineteenth-century interpretations that many modern pagans and mythology fans assume are much older depictions. Let us be clear that Hecate is, indeed, a witch goddess, The Goddess of Witchcraft and Magic. There is no inherent wickedness in this, or anything to be afraid of. Hecate commands respect. Because we are less likely to learn about Her in school they way we may learn of the Olympian gods, many assume She is a “lesser” deity. This is just not so. She is pre-Olympian, a 2nd generation Titaness who took the side of the Olympians in the great war (the Titanomachy) and so, is beloved by the Olympians and honored even by Zeus. Hecate does have association with the underworld, and so with death. However, She is not macabre or bloodthirsty. Nor is she Death or a harbinger of death. She is a guide of souls, lighting their way to their eternal rest with Her twin torches. She also uses Her torches and Her keys to protect families and children and guide travelers along the many crossroads of life.
Tumblr media
(Circe by John William Waterhouse)
Hecate has many famous priestess, though they haven’t always had the best press. Medea of The Argonautica and Circe of The Odyssey are both described as witches, priestesses of Hecate.  It is sometimes assumed that because Hecate is a goddess of witchcraft (and also of childbirth) that She is a woman’s deity.  Hecate does not discriminate and welcomes disciples of all genders.
When depicted with three heads, or three bodied, Hecate is seen as one of the many triple or three-in-one goddesses. Typically this trinity is that of Maiden-Mother-Crone, and in modern times Hecate is assumed to take part of the old, wisdom keeper. However, in Ancient times, She was often shown as younger woman, more contemporary in age to the Mother. Was the Crone image an influence from the depiction of a witch as an aged woman or to fit her into the MMC trinity?
Some people associate Hecate, and her connections to the night, magic and death, with the concept of evil. Some of this may be due to a Christianized lens that tends to view the shadow aspects of life as “bad” or “of the devil”. But we know that day needs night, life and death are a continuum and there is no good or bad magic, only magic users with positive or negative intentions. Just as there are deities of water, which can nourish a civilization or wipe it out with a flood, so too, Hecate’s rule over magic and witchcraft are benign. She is not “evil”, nor is She fully “good”. These are human qualities. Hecate… is.

A Womxn In Science (they/she) was raised as a working class, nomadic child of Appalachia and the Deep South. A proud daughter of the coal fields, they grew up in an unjustly impoverished, but beautiful region with deep leftist roots that have formulated their radical ideology and has propelled them forward their whole life.
Liz identifies as a queer, non-binary, Appalachian femme. Her love of science began at a young age when she began exploring the wilderness around her family’s various homes, leaving no stone unturned, no plant un-inspected, no animal un-observed. She graduated in 2012 from Ohio University with a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. She then made a leap of faith and packed all the belongings she could fit into her 2000 Chevy and moved to Chicago, Illinois the following fall with just her dog and her ambitions and has been there ever since. It was in Chicago that Liz found their true calling and sharpened their community organizer skills under the guidance and leadership of the brilliant BIPOC organizers in the city.
After dabbling in laboratory work, research, and veterinary medicine, they began their journey of unifying their work of science, justice, and community organizing by pursuing a career as rural Family Nurse Practitioner with the hopes of one day to radically change the healthcare system for some of the most vulnerable people in Appalachia. They are currently in the process of earning their MSN with the intentions of then furthering their education by obtaining their DNP in the following years. Her heart belongs to the Appalachian region and the people who reside within it and she cannot imagine practicing medicine anywhere else.
When she is not engrossed in her studies, she spends her days building the world and the life she would like to see by growing her own food, working towards radical change, creating beautiful spaces, and taking a damn nap whenever she can.
If you would like to collaborate on rural healthcare work or other forms of radical progress, their inbox is always open.

Transmission / 🌞 • I am often asked what style of yoga I ‘teach’… this is often followed by the question: is it a hybrid sort of Yoga? :) The Yoga Sadhana I feel is an intuitive practice that will naturally take on many forms in this life time and it, like us, is ever evolving. As we cycle with the sun if we are gentlemen & the moon if we are gentle womxn; our needs are constantly changing daily, weekly, monthly, yearly & generationally, and so too should our healing tools. In my experience one ‘type’ of a yoga transmission will not fit us all - nor can it support us forever ♾ 🌈 However the study of the principles of Yoga or The 8 Limbs / Ashtanga* Yoga are where the timeless keystone is hidden if you want to experience true and living Yoga. These teachings are interfaith, timeless and universal wisdom. *Not to be confused with ashtanga vinyasa :) Lineage /🌙 • Lucky for me I made my way into some small hole in the wall yoga shalas as a teen, which soonish became a discovery of Krishnamachariyas lineage: the dynamic hatha, ashtanga vinyasa and iyengar informed practices served my curious, growing and energetic body at the time which had never really been injured ~ though I suffer quietly from emotional blockages & an ancient sadness deep in young soul which is what kept me dedicated I suppose. Since then with idk 1000+ registered hours of teacher training and thousands more hours of self practice, silence & guided inquiry, I can say I found what we all need in order to keep it going. A compassion for our ever changing lives, which requires a compassionate approach to match. To sustain our life in yoga we can look to and integrate the wisdom transmitted by Krishnamachariya’s son whose therapeutic approach is what is at the heart of yoga. 1.1 atha yoga anushasanam now, the practice of yoga begins — :)! Long story short, the yoga I share as @sattvic_sadhana is a practice that can move us toward self realization via ancient knowledge with a sense of relaxation / so we can soften into the divine timing of our lives and actively care about each other, all beings and the planet along the way. Yoga means union after all. 🕊💫✨ Love & blessings Tara 🤍 https://www.instagram.com/p/CV9Vh60ITjX/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hag's Medicine: Mullein Plant Profile
Tumblr media
I realized that it’s been a few months since I wrote my last plant profile for all of you and continuing the last few posts on breathwork and herbs for respiratory wellness, Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) felt like the wonderful ally to celebrate and learn from this month. So let’s do just that!
Tumblr media
Mullein
(Verbascum thapsus)
Common + Folk Names : Hag’s tapers, beggar’s blanket, graveyard dust, candlewick, Jupiter’s staff, torches, velvet dock, witch’s candle, lungwort, shepherd’s staff, duffle, fluffweed, fleawort, tinder plant, Cuddy's lungs, hare’s beard, Our Lady’s flannel, Quaker rouge, Aaron's rod, Jacob's staff, verbasco, Nookaadiziiganzh. Tarot Cards : The Devil, The World, Two of Pentacles - learn more about tarot + herbs Element : Earth, Water Zodiac Signs : Capricorn Planets : Saturn Moon Phase : Waning Quarter Moon Parts used : Leaf, flower, root Habitat : Native to Eurasia and North Africa but naturalized throughout North America. Growing conditions : Grows in waste areas and roadsides. Likes full sun and well-drained soil. Collection : Collect the flowers and leaves from second year and older plants. Roots in the fall. Flavor : Pungent, slightly bitter Temperature : Cool Moisture : Moist Tissue State : Damp/Stagnation, Dry/Atrophy Constituents : Carotene, choline, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, resin, saponins, glycoside, flavonoids, mucilage, tannins, triterpenes, volatile oil.
Actions : alterative, anodyne, antibacterial, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, astringent, decongestant, demulcent, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, pectoral, vulnerary. Flower: analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, demulcent, emollient, mucilaginous, nervine, sedative. Root: anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, anodyne, diuretic, nervine.
Main Uses : Mullein is described by Nicholas Culpeper as being under the guardianship of Saturn, which is in part why the herb is considered a plant of Capricorn. The herb is a great ally during the winter months, helping to clear phlegm from the system, reduce inflammation, and protect against infection. It is excellent for clearing out chronic, long-standing coughs, especially dry and spasmodic coughs, and can help with a number of respiratory complaints including bronchitis, asthma, and general lung weakness. Mullein has traditionally been used for tuberculosis, whooping cough, and pleurisy. Bartram's Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine describes a traditional Irish preparation of Mullein for the treatment of tuberculosis prepared by adding a handful of the green leaves to two pints of fresh milk, strained, and then sweetened with honey which was then drunk once or twice daily. Think deep, thick, and chesty coughs. Look for signs of adrenal stress, especially after long bouts of illness and conditions worsening when lying down.
Add the herb to your cold and flu blends with Elder (Sambucus nigra) and Peppermint (Mentha piperita) for a lung-opening, immunomodulating blend. Mullein is useful, too, for Capricorn folk who tend towards stagnant cold states which lead to swellings and cysts as the herb helps to dissolve such manifestations of buildup. As a decongestant, Mullein is good for allergies such as hay fever, helping to clear phlegm and relieve pain. In her Physica, Hildegard von Bingen recommended Mullein for “one who is hoarse or has a pain in his chest” recommending that they combine the herb with Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) in a medicinal wine. Use also for asthma (especially if there is heat and aggravation) and general chest infections. Mullein has immunostimulating properties which is another reason that it is excellent for cold and flu season and especially for someone succumbing to chronic viral infections. The herb is effective against viruses such as herpes, too.
Tumblr media
As a moistening diuretic, Mullein helps to soothe an inflamed urinary system and help with the release of urine. Mullein is also well-suited for many cases of edema and water retention. The herb also helps to remove toxins from the body because of its ability to move water out of the body. Use in cases of arthritis, rheumatism, gout, UTIs, and cystitis. As a digestive, Mullein is a mild bitter that relieves indigestion, especially in cases of a damp and stagnant digestion, and can help alleviate the pain of peptic ulcers.
Mullein can be used for nerve pain and combines well with other nervines such as Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) and St. Joan’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum). Use internally as well as an oil for neuralgia and especially nerve pain the hands and feet. In particular, the root can be used in cases of Bell’s palsy and facial nerve pain. The herb helps to loosen up stiff joints and connective tissue.
Topically, the mucilaginous Mullein is excellent for dry skin conditions but also as a healing compress or salve for boils, bruises, inflammation, hemorrhoids, eczema, sciatica, and joint pain. Use in a steam for lung conditions like asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory imbalances already described. In Plants Have So Much to Give Us, All We Have To Do Is Ask: Anishinaabe Botanical Teachings, Mary Siisip Geniusz recommends following a steam with Mullein a cup of Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and then to bed to clear the head and chest. Mullein is used similarly as a smoking herb as well as an aid to help wean off tobacco. Mullein is useful in cases of bulging discs and bone setting. The herb helps the skin repair after a wound, burn, sore, and ulcer and can be used for skin infections, too. A compress of the leaves is excellent for alleviating the pain of swollen joints, sore muscles, swollen glands, eczema and for headaches. Use also for lymphadenitis and mumps. Create a gargle of the tea or extract for laryngitis, swollen gums, and tonsillitis. Mullein and garlic ear oil is a trusted remedy for ear infections helping to relieve pain and infection. I always keep a small bottle of Mullein and Garlic oil in my home care kit just for this reason. Mullein is also a common herb in smoking blends.
Magickal Uses : The long thick stems are sometimes referred to as Hag’s Tapers (the dried stalks dipped in wax will burn as a somewhat messy candle) as they are associated with the magickal workings of Witchfolk. Mullein is a plant long associated with the working of Hags - the womxn overculture has always feared who teach us to embrace what has been deemed unpalatable to value systems that our not our own into essential tools of our self-understanding. The tapers can be burned at funerals to protect against unwanted and malevolent spirits. You can also tuck the leaves into your shoe for added comfort and protection on your journeys. Use for general protection against sorcery, the evil eye, and malevolent spirits. Specifically protective against wild animal attacks and guards against the Night Mare. Use as a substitute for graveyard dust in spells and charms. Burn Mullein in your Midsummer bonfire for protection and gather the ashes to use in protection charms.
Tumblr media
The Mullein Personality : The Mullein person has something to get off their chest which can sometimes manifest as chronic respiratory infections and a barking cough that doesn’t allow them to get a clear word out. Their adrenals are often run down and mornings - just as they are getting out of bed - can be some of the most difficult times for them physically and emotionally. Often, Mullein folk come off as dried out (which can manifest in their physical symptoms), but they may appear dry because all of their waters have pooled deep in the body. With their unexpressed truth settling in the body they are stewing, sometimes even bubbling over. They need to learn how to light their torch, even if the words that come out aren’t “perfectly” illuminating or fit in with the standards that they or others hold them to. Mullein folk can be confused about what they stand for because they have been so focused on “correct” social customs and traditions. Mullein will help them to become honest with themselves and release these stagnant patterns of seeking authority outside of themselves and help them to speak their words. Ultimately, they learn that morals, values, and laws aren’t of any use unless they align with their morals, values, and inner sense of lawful justice.
Contraindications : Considered generally safe.
Drug interactions : None known.
Dosage : Standard dosage.
Recipe: The following tea is useful for alleviating the pain and tension of backache and neuralgia. It can also be made into an herbal oil or liniment and used topically.
Stand Tall Tea
1 part Nettles (Urtica dioica)
1/2 part Mullein Leaf + Flower (Verbascum thapsus)
1/2 part St. Joan’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)
Optional: 1/2 part Ginger (Zingiber officinalis)
Add the Ginger if the condition is worse with cold and better with heat. Sweeten with honey or coconut sugar and milk of choice.
I write more about Mullein and it’s uses as an herbal ally for fire season and it is featured in my list of herbs for breathwork and respiratory wellness. Mullein is one of my favorite herbs to use for Capricorn energy and learning more about the sign helps to understand the energy and magick that Mullein offers. Of course, you can always follow the tag for Mullein to see where it might guide you.

TALKING ABOUT GENDER TRANSITION
The use of vocabulary like “they identify as a woman / man / non-binary” and “they prefer she/her / he/him / they/them pronouns” invalidates transgender identities by implying that they are up for debate.
Tumblr media
I found this diagram on the Instagram account of Schuyler Bailar, a transgender American swimmer. He also had a very helpful list of transgender-related vocabulary on his website.
Transgender – an adjective that describes a person who does not identify as the gender they were assigned at birth.
Cisgender – an adjective that describes a person who identifies as the gender they were assigned at birth.
Transition – any step(s) a person takes to affirm their gender identity; this may or may not include changes in one’s name, pronouns, physical appearance, taking hormones, undergoing surgery, among many other things. There is no one way to transition.
Sex – usually refers to biology, but there is no one way to define biological sex. Most people attempt to define biological sex one way (usually with external genitalia or chromosomes), but the reality is there are five main major components of biological sex: chromosomes, hormones, expression of hormones, internal genitalia, and external genitalia. Most folks exist in within two binaries of classically ‘male’ and ‘female,’ but biological sex is a spectrum, and many people exist between the two main categories. These folks are called “intersex.” There is nothing wrong with their bodies, this is just a normal and natural expression of human biological diversity.
Intersex – an adjective used to describe someone born with reproductive anatomy that does not fit typical definitions of “male” or “female.” There is nothing wrong with their bodies, this is just a normal and natural expression of human biological diversity. It’s important to realize that intersex anatomy isn’t always discovered at birth! Sometimes a person isn’t found to have intersex anatomy until puberty, or finds themselves infertile as an adult, or even until a post-mortem autopsy. Some people live and die with intersex anatomy without anyone (including themselves) ever knowing they are intersex.
Gender (identity) – the gender that a person is born with; a part of who someone is. This does not have to match “biological sex,” though it often does as most people are not transgender.
Gender expression – a societal box we check or don’t to try to communicate our gender with others. This is culturally, temporally, and geographically constrained and is best defined by social construct.
Trans man – a person assigned female at birth but identifies as male.
Trans woman – a person assigned male at birth but identifies as female.
Transvestite/crossdresser – a person who portrays the “opposite” gender expression, but who identifies with the gender they were assigned at birth.
Cis guy/man – a person who was assigned male at birth and identifies as male.
Cis girl/woman – a person who was assigned female at birth and identifies as female.
FTM* – this stands for “Female to Male” and it refers to people assigned female at birth but who identify as male. I personally have grown to dislike this term because it implies that I was once female, which does not feel accurate. Of course, I was assigned female at birth, and haven’t always had the language or resources or safety to explain my identity as man, but I have always felt like a boy, like myself.
Trans masculine (abv: trans masc) – a person who was assigned female at birth but identifies on the masculine end of gender expression (this is usually considered more a inclusive and less rigid term than “trans man”/”trans male.”)
MTF* – this stands for “Male to Female” and it refers to people assigned male at birth but identify as female.
Trans feminine (abv: trans femme) – a personal who was assigned male at birth but identifies on the feminine side of the gender spectrum (again, this is usually considered more a inclusive and less rigid term than “trans woman.”)
Nonbinary – describes someone who does not identify within the gender binary. For some folks this means identifying somewhere between the binary ”ends” (male and female), for some it means identifying as a combination of genders, and for others it means feeling a complete lack of a gender. For many folks, being nonbinary entails liberation from the stereotypes and gender roles attached to the gender they were assigned at birth. Note: Many folks use the term “enby” as a short term for nonbinary. This is the spelling of the abbreviation “NB” but folks have strayed away from using “NB” to refer to nonbinary folks as “NB” is used more widely as an abbreviation for non-Black folks.
(Gender) Dysphoria – the discomfort or distress that arises from the incongruence of gender identity and gender assigned at birth.
Top surgery – a mastectomy for transmasculine folks, a “masculinization” of chest. Often includes nipple grafts.
Bottom surgery – surgery to change the genitalia of one’s body. Previously referred to as “sex reassignment surgery” or “genital reassignment surgery,” but bottom surgery is a more inclusive term that also doesn’t medicalize the experience quite as much. Many trans folks dislike the “sex-reassignment” terminology as well as this is an inaccurate representation of what ‘sex’ is. Biological sex is more than just one’s genitals.
HRT – hormone replacement therapy — usually testosterone for trans masc folks, and estrogen for trans femme folks.
T or E – common abbreviations for testosterone and estrogen, respectively.
Womxn – in the 1970s feminists who wanted to remove the word ‘men’ from the word ‘women’ began using ‘womyn.’ This quickly became associated with (cisgender) white feminism and thus ‘womxn’ was adopted in an attempt to be inclusive of women of color and trans women. However this effort has backfired in many ways, namely through implicitly asserting that the original word ‘women’ is not inclusive women of color and trans women, which is false. Trans women are women. Women of color are women. Thus, I’d advise NOT using this term because it is often too loaded. If you mean to call out trans women or women of color or cis women specifically, do so.
Misgender –the act of referring to someone in a way that does not reflect that person’s gender identity. For example, using incorrect pronouns, calling someone by an old name (a deadname), using an incorrect prefix (e.g. Mr. or Ms.). Misgendering can be especially painful for trans individuals because it calls forth a history of not being seen as who we truly are.
Deadname – refers to the name someone was given or used before they transitioned and/or discovered their true gender identity. This term is an adjustment to the term, ‘birth name” for a few reasons, namely that these names are dead. Some people also feel that when deadnamed, a small part of them dies. Like misgendering, deadnames often drag forth a great deal of pain and trauma for trans folks of having to live as someone they are not. Some folks also refer to deadnames as “old names.”
*I noticed that this list doesn’t include AMAB (Assigned Male At Birth) or AFAB (Assigned Female At Birth).
