A magical forest teeming with wildlife and magical beings, a pristine lake, drama and intrigue, and a bustling small town main street, what else could you need to bring these characters to life in a magical town?
Flora Periwinkle (Flora, Sleeping Beauty) - It’s not that you don’t like being a fairy– on the contrary! You are very proud to be a fairy and you even love being a Garden Talent. However, when your entire family are also Garden Talents, and brilliant ones at that, sometimes it’s easier to chart your own path in town than live up to them in the Hollow.
Pearl Beck (Pearl, Finding Nemo) - You were taught your entire life to hide It, It being the fact you are a merperson, which in case that wasn’t clear, is your entire identity!!! Swynlake a magick-friendly town, and yet, you sure don’t see any out merpeople here, especially not any out cecaelia. Well, then. You’re just going to have to change that and show everyone how awesome merfolk are.
Zarina Hendricks (Zarina, Tinkerbell Series) - Apple pies, wind-blown hair, and stolen pixie dust in your flour-covered hands. Longing for a part of yourself you’re not allowed to fully access can be difficult. Will you curiosity and habit of pixie dust theft get you in trouble?
Cassim Baba (Cassim, Aladdin and the King of Thieves) - You’re no criminal, you’re a professional! It isn’t your fault its more lucrative to…acquire treasures without the previous holder’s permission. What have you come to Swynlake to acquire?
Aaron Tahiri (Aaron T, Turning Red) - When you considered university, you thought you'd go somewhere in Scotland, maybe Ireland, or perhaps venture to the United States...but when the university here in Swynlake offered you a scholarship because your mother taught here, well. That was that, wasn't it? Now you're stuck here in your hometown! Bummer! What's worse? You still have no earthly idea what you're even in uni for. Help!
Chase Griffin (Chase, Disney Fairies) - A scout talent never rests! Er, except you. For now. It's not your fault! You're injured! But this time on the sidelines is anything but relaxing. You're bound and determined to prove you're still one of the fiercest scouts the Hollow's ever seen. How, you may ask? You're working on that.

It frightens and discourages me how pervasive "tribal" stereotypes and imagery are in the fantasy and adventure genres.
It's all over the place in classic literature. Crack open a Jules Verne novel and you're likely to find caricatures of brown people and cultures, even when the characters are sympathetic to the plight of the colonized peoples - incidentally, this is the biggest reason I can't recommend 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to everyone, despite Captain Nemo being one of my favorite fictional characters of all time.
You can't escape it in modern cinema, either. You'll see white heroes venturing bravely into jungles and tombs to steal from natives who don't know how to use their resources "properly." You'll see them strung up in traps, riddled with sleeping darts, forced to flee and fight their way out. Hell, Pirates of the Caribbean, a remarkably inclusive franchise in many other ways, had an extended sequence of the white heroes escaping from a cannibal civilization in the second film.
And when fantasy RPGs want a humanoid enemy, the "bloodthirsty natives" are the first stock trope they jump to. World of Warcraft is one of the most egregious examples, with the trolls - blatant racist caricatures with faux-voodoo beliefs, cannibalistic diets, Jamaican accents, and a history of being killed in droves by (white) elves and humans - being raided and slaughtered in nearly every expansion.
It doesn't matter how vibrant and distinctive the real-world indigenous, Polynesian, Caribbean, and African cultures are. It doesn't matter how much potential these real civilizations offer for complex and sympathetic characterization. Anything that doesn't make sense to the white western mind is shoved under the same "savage" umbrella. They're different. They're strange. They're scary. They have to be escaped, subjugated, eliminated, ogled at from the safety of a museum.
Modern writers, directors, and developers don't even seem to realize how horrifying it is to present the indigenous inhabitants of a place as "obstacles" for non-native protagonists to overcome. "It's not racist," they say, "because these people aren't really people, you see." And if you dare to point out anything that hurts or offends you as a descendant of the bastardized culture, you're accused of being the real racist: "These aren't humans! They're monsters! Are you saying that these real societies are just like those disgusting monsters?"
No, they're not monsters. But you chose to design them as monsters, just as invaders have done for hundreds of years. Why would you do that? Why can you recognize any other caricature as evil and cruel, but not this?
This is how deep colonialism runs.
#tw racism#critical#this isn't even about any specific media anymore#it's a pattern#and it's a pattern that seems so obvious#but it's so omnipresent that even the most progressive folks can't seem to recognize how terrifying it is#these tropes were written in blood

Viewers' Choice Poll
A new month, a new poll! I realized that going by the mobile game's ID list meant a couple arcade-exclusive servants would get left behind, so I added them to the pool as well- don't be surprised if they show up now and again. without any further ado, let's see our contenders!
first up we have the Warrior of Light from Final Fantasy 14, Big Rock Mommy's special lil guy. this time instead of making them a tank right off the bat, they'll have a second poll if they win to pick a class. playing an RPG in an RPG? how meta!
our first arcade entry, Suzuka Gozen (Santa)! while she would be an appropriate pick for a december build, the only written info I can find on her is some untranslated bio stuff, so she's gonna be an experience to build.
our second arcade servant, Nemo. same class and everything, he's just fuckin' noah now, I guess.
obviously Mash Kyrielight isn't a new character, but we built her a good three and a half years ago- there's been all sorts of changes, both to D&D and our build-making skills, in the meantime, and we just wanted her to have the chance to get a more modern build.
I'm going to tackle both beasts, Beast III/R and Beast IV, here. us building beasts in D&D used to be a thing, but they were boss monster builds instead of player characters. they were wildly unbalanced, but that's part of the fun, I think. we just kind of stopped a bit due to being perpetually tired and life being kind of a nightmare the last while, but if enough people want to get handsy with the universe or to... be koyanskaya, again? (what does beast iv even do?) then we'll get our butts in gear.
oh yeah also Simo Hayha is back. sneaky shooty guy, killed a lot of Russians. he's also real, which was cool of him to do.

Nemo’s Fury 3…and a coloring book! 🦑🎨
Another banger from the Nemo's Fury series!
In "Nemo's Fury 3: Fort Death," you, as former journalist T.K. O'Connor, journey across conflict-ridden territory with the mission of stopping a world war before it begins! Joining you is Captain Nemo, as well as a former slave, Nomuula, and a cyborg named Ana-Alpha.
The gameplay, like the other books, is something of a hybrid between classic RPG à la D&D and CYOA games. All that is needed is two 6D, paper and pencil!
It has come to my attention, mind you, that it's not uncommon for enjoyers of game books to eschew the dice and play through more as a CYOA. This removes some of the challenge, however it worked well for me as I often play while on the go.
It may also be the preferred mode for people who have a young child who enjoys playing games but doesn't understand how they work, and so absconds with your dice, scattering them throughout the house and hoarding them like a majestic little dice-dragon. (Surely I'm not the only one who's had this experience?)
I must admit that so far, this has been my favorite of the Nemo's Fury books. The adventure plot is exciting and I'm finding myself increasingly invested in the characters.
Now, I was low-key giving the side eye to Mr. Hunneysett for his portrayal of Captain Nemo as an angsty young man instead of our dearly belovéd chronically depressed old gentleman widower.
Thin ice, buddy. Thin ice.
Three books in, however, I do find myself rooting more and more for this Sadboy Emo Nemo as he chooses to face his identity issues and pull up his big boy pants. There is, perhaps, a lesson here young men in real life could glean from. (Yeah, I'm looking at you, Johnathan. You know what you did.)
I'm also having a bit of a letdown after having finished Nemo's Fury 3, which is always a very good sign! I'm now more eager than ever to see what happens in the next adventure and see how Nemo grows and takes responsibility for his destiny.
In the meantime...there's a coloring book! 🎨
Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of time for coloring these days, but I am mightily intrigued by the sample images. I might one of these days get it to work on with my sea-monster-loving little nipper (yes, the one who keeps stealing my dice).
Awwww, look at these little babies:
How precious! And the mother looks so proud! Good for her.
Considering how many of my fellow Vernian nerds are artistically inclined and have penchants for classic SciFi, marine biology and creepy critters, I figured this coloring book would be of high interest to my dear friends and followers.
Now get ye to Amazon and have a gander:

Mortal Kombat 1: A Scintillating Blockbuster of 2023
Amid all this excitement surrounding Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023, gamers are also looking for ways to enhance their gaming experience. If you're eager to dive into the action and buy PS5 games that complement the thrill of MK1, you're in for an even more immersive adventure. NetherRealm has not only set a new benchmark for beat 'em up games but has also created a captivating world that beckons you to explore further. So, don't miss out on the opportunity to buy PS5 games that will elevate your gaming journey alongside this scintillating blockbuster.
The game boasts a base roster of 22 fighters, including a pre-order bonus of Shang Tsung. Each fighter stands out, although they have all been featured in the MK universe before. While introducing new characters would have been appreciated, it aligns with the story's direction. However, the upcoming DLC promises fresh additions. Most characters maintain their conventional forms, but some introduce novel gameplay elements. For instance, Kung Lao's signature hat spin move has been slowed down, and Liu Kang's iconic flying double kick has been replaced with a comeback Fatal Blow. A notable introduction in MK1 by NetherRealm is the Kameo system. Players are required to select a secondary character from a distinct roster, bringing back names from the past. It's thrilling to see lesser-known characters like Stryker and Motaro make a return. In battles, Kameos have their unique moves and Brutalities and can be activated with a button press, although they are restricted by a meter. Additionally, for those looking to enhance their gaming experience, you can always explore options to buy PS5 games to expand your collection and enjoy even more exciting battles with these iconic characters.
The Refreshing Blend of Challenges and Stories in Mortal Kombat 1's Invasion Mode
Invasion Mode uses a board-game design, urging players to traverse from one square to another, unlocking new encounters. Similar to MK9's Challenge Tower and MK11's Towers of Time, many challenges come with modifiers and varying conditions. The feature of combining Talismans, RPG-style progression, and hidden elements offers a refreshing break from the intense MK gameplay. However, incorporating aspects of the Krypt might have made this more comprehensive, especially if one finds the Invasion mode repetitive after some time. Some moments make him laugh, referencing moments from past games with a humorous approach. Cage continually references every Hollywood movie from Aliens to Finding Nemo, and Shang Tsung is still an absolute prick. Some things don't change, but it is beautifully animated, with facial animations excellently crafted, and the environments are astonishing. There are never moments where it drags, with each character playing an important part in the Campaign, even people like Baraka who was always more of a filler in the roster.
Bromances, romances, treachery, sorrow, and hope. Mortal Kombat 1 has plenty of twists and poignancy, but it also has some moments that are made to make him cheer and fist-bump the sky, including a final ten minutes that take the Tower to a whole new level. There wasn't a time where he felt a fighter outstayed their welcome, or someone got less time than they deserved. To him, the Campaign was perfect, and he loved that he was able to experiment with all of the characters in challenging new ways. It acts as a primer for online if that's what he wants, but it's also a fantastic introduction to the other single-player mode, Invasion.
A Thrilling Rebirth of Mortal Kombat
Invasion lets him play across a game board of sorts, fighting characters that feature a ton of variations. In some fights, dead bodies fall from the sky, or circular saws get launched at him from the side of the screen. Even the opponents might have a particular buff, or damage can't be done to them unless he strikes at the right time. There are test-your-might challenges, games that require him to dodge or jump over projectiles, fights where he has to take out three opponents in one fight, and traditional towers. Whatever the challenge, he's constantly rewarded with coins to spend in the shop, where he can buy consumables to help against particular elemental fighters, talismans and upgrades, and more. He'll also build his skill level as he plays through Invasion, giving him access to skill points that can be automatically applied or not. One thing MK1 does well is reward him for his hard work. As he plays through Invasion, Towers, or online, he'll level up his rank as well as the fighters he selects. Gradually, he'll start to unlock new skins, gear, brutalities, backgrounds for his player icon, skin palettes, and other cool stuff. He'll also unlock seasonal kredits to spend on new skins and gear for whatever themed season is in play, and coins that can be exchanged for new stuff at the dragon shrine.
The new era isn't some rehash or reboot, it's a rebirth. It revels in all the things that make Mortal Kombat great, acknowledging everything a fan would expect – but also carefully delivering a fresh perspective to keep things unique and interesting. The stellar roster of faces, both base and Kameo alike, provides a foundation for players to immerse themselves in a violent realm of near-infinite possibilities. Spilling blood has never been so approachable, or fun.

The Ruins of Atlantis (Riveted RPG)
Article in “Archäologische Zeitung” The underwater ruins of Atlantis have long been a subject of fascination and speculation for historians, scientists, and adventurers alike. Many have claimed to have discovered evidence of the legendary city, but none have been as intriguing as the recent findings of a team of explorers prompted by Professor Aronnax’ accounts of Captain Nemo’s travels. Bit gaming reference that comes across by this post, props for his/her/their (forgive me from not knowing your pronouns bit better 🫥) blog since now I like to start made one on my own.
10: Favorite Console

20: Favorite Moment in any Game
“I’m a dangerous girl, and right now, I’m losing patience” from Angel Of Darkness and “You’re really staring to piss me off from that coin, Connor” from DBH but still love every Hank Anderson moments along with “Connor! The fuck are you doing?” 🤣😂
30: Best RPG Horror Game
Don’t have one for modern gaming till afterwards: Vampyr and Bloodborne are so far.
40: Best Game Soundtrack

Darla Davis || Twenty-One || Student || Non-Magical
TW: Stalking, bullying
Darla had a bit of a rough childhood. It’s not that her parents were bad. They loved her very much. Her father was a dentist so he made sure she had the best teeth a kid could have. The issue was that Darla was cursed with horrible teeth. So bad that she had to wear headgear. She was constantly teased and bullied at school because of the headgear. She got called all sorts of names. Metal head, brace face, tinsel teeth, etc… It was hell for sure. She would come home crying to her parents and begged to have the gear removed. She pleaded to her father to find another way to fix her teeth but he said one day she would look back and thank him for what he did. For a while Darla resented her father but once she got to high school she didn’t need the head gear anymore and realized her father was right all along.

MOST WANTED:
|| Get to know MARLIN PHISH who’s FORTY years old and works as a JOB UP TO PLAYER in town. He is from CORONA and is often times mistaken for WILLIAM JACKSON HARPER while others say he reminds them of MARLIN from FINDING NEMO. ||
tw: death, car accident
Marlin wasn’t always so paranoid. When he was younger he was the life of the party and an all-star at school. He had everything a teen could want; a beautiful girlfriend named Coral, sports scholarship on his way, and plenty of friends. Then his girlfriend found out she was pregnant and his entire world changed. He wasn’t upset, he wasn’t mean about it, he just shifted the course of action. He knew his girlfriend was his future wife and ultimately, that’s what ended up happening. They had Nemo in their first year of college and Marlin was in love with the family he had. As much as school had always been a top priority for him, his family had to come first. So Marlin dropped out and focused on starting his life with his wife and son.
For a few years, everything was bliss. He had his wife, his rock, and he had Nemo, his world. But then tragedy struck. They were driving home from a Christmas party and the roads were slippery due to ice. The car skidded off the road and Coral and Nemo were the ones who suffered. Marlin lost his wife just a few days before the holiday and Nemo’s leg was broken significantly. He was just a child at the time and the effects of the accident have lasted him. His son walks with a cane on most days and Marlin treats him like he is made of glass. So many years have passed since this incident and Marlin still treats Nemo like he will break at any second. He’s just about to start college and Marlin is terrified. What if he gets hurt? Marlin may have started letting other people into his life again, but he isn’t ready to lose his son. He wants him to have a life outside of his shadow but he doesn’t know how to let his own fear go.

Cheshire Fields (The Cheshire Cat, Alice In Wonderland) - You’re always smiling but is that always a good thing? One can never tell if it’s kindly or mischievous, or what secrets the town’s favorite invisible barista is hiding…
Cornelia Hale (Cornelia Hale, W.I.T.C.H.) - You asked to be exceptional, but not in this way! You only wanted to be a figure skater, twirling, leaping into the air to land impressively on one skate, that was what you trained for. Not to be some plant-magic freak! Ugh! You’re going to shake this stupid destiny one way or another!
Xīshuài Aoyun (Lucky Cricket, Mulan) - A gift shouldn’t be able to hurt you. You think about this a lot as your fairy gift of Luck seems to only put you in danger. Will you be safe in Swynlake, far from anybody who knows about your unwelcome gift?
Marin MacGill (The Magic Mirror, Snow White) - Your gift isn’t scary, honest! It’s not like you asked for it. And anyway, you just really want to help people, that’s all. All these secret, whispers, tidbits of information, they’ve got to be in your head for some good reason, right?
Jacques Crevette (Jacques, Finding Nemo) - Your gift is harmless but even so, you were not welcome back home. This is why you've come to Swynlake to well and truly share your gift with others-- and maybe more importantly, find out just how far it goes.
Rapunzel Corona (Rapunzel, Tangled) - Starry eyes, lantern lights, and…magic glowing hair? Stranger things did happen here in Swynlake. Maybe that’s good for you! You’ve run away from home, you’re hiding, could Swynlake be your chance to blend in while searching for the answers you crave? You do hope so.

We welcome Nolan Marlin to the city. He’s 26 years old and is a Teacher Aid. Nemo is often mistaken for Nick Robinson. He’s open.
→ Background Information
Nolan’s preferred nickname, Nemo, comes from his mother and as a young kid and in early middle school he absolutely hated that name. He thought it was embarrassing and weird but after his mom passed away when he was 13, he came to prefer that name over Nolan as it reminded him of their mom. For most of his young adult life, Nemo has felt like a bit of a trainwreck. Despite getting through college fine, the loss of his father in his second year having a huge impact on his studies, Nemo’s always felt a little off about it and he’s not sure why. Perhaps losing his father has had something to do with that but he’s not sure that’s something he’ll figure out anytime soon. He had no idea that he’d end up working as a teacher’s aid following school but he doesn’t regret that choice one bit. Nemo is fantastic with little kids because he’s so full of adventure and energy.
→ Living Situation
Enjoying living with his older brother is never something Nemo would be able to say with a straight face around their friends but honestly he really loves it. Though he’s always up for an adventure, moving to a new place is really intimidating and knowing that Marshall would be right there every step of the way made it much easier. He was even happier when Marshall moved them to a small house instead of the apartment they started out in in Libertas. He loves his brother, but he also loves having his own little upstairs wing of a house to himself.
→ Relocation Explanation
At first Nemo wasn’t exactly thrilled about the relocation but it didn’t take long for him to realize how much staying in their old town was affecting his older brother after the loss of his fiance, Caroline. It was all over his face when they’d go out and about and while it was normal at first, after a long while Nemo began to wonder if Marshall was in fact okay. So after a bit of thought and hearing of a new aquarium job in a new city, Nemo was on board because he wanted to be there with his brother and he knew he’d have no trouble finding work with kids wherever they ended up.
→ His Personality
From his toddling toddler days, Nemo has always been energetic and on the go. His father used to joke about how he’d swim away from them when they’d go to the lake or pool once he was older and at one point that was the case. Along with being on the go, Nemo’s always been pretty adventurous as well and while it’s fun, it’s also landed him in trouble a few times with both his dad and his older brother. Despite the trouble, bravery is something Nemo’s gained from his adventurous side and that’s carried into his adult life.
→ His Qualities
Energetic, Creative, Compassionate
Naive, Impulsive, Lazy
→ His Relationships
Marshall Marlin (Older Brother): There have been times in their relationship when Nemo would say that he can’t stand his older brother or that he’s annoyed to no end but honestly for the most part he’s been more than thankful for him. Even though Nemo still gets annoyed at times by how worrisome Marlin is, he’s still glad to have moved with him to Libertas. Plus, Marlin’s new job has some pretty cool perks.
Dory Fischer (Co-Worker & Friend): Nolan will never forget the first time he met Dory mostly because of how memorable the moment was. He walked into her classroom at the end of the summer to introduce himself and she had hardly gotten her own name out before she told him about her memory situation. She was so embarrassed but honestly Nolan didn’t mind at all - actually he was glad she was so honest with him. Ever since Nemo has been at Dory’s side at work whenever she needs him and he even introduced her to his brother.
Destiny Whalen (Good Friend & Crush): The first time Nemo met Destiny he was with Dory and he just thought she was so cute. Then a few weeks later when Nemo visited his brother at work at the aquarium for the first time and saw her again, he was kind of smitten but in a friendship sort of way. Destiny is super funny and charming and those are two things that Nemo really enjoys in a friend. He loves visiting her at the aquarium and will maybe admit to having a little crush on her but he’ll always brush it off as not a big deal.
→ Possible Connections
Bailey Belue (Friend): Nemo doesn’t know Bailey super well but from the few times they’ve run into each other at his apartment with Destiny, he’s enjoyed speaking to him. Though Nemo works with kids, he doesn’t see how Bailey seems to do it all and he finds his motivation quite inspirational.
Nolan is based on Nemo from Finding Nemo/Finding Dory.

Introducing Drew Anchorage. He is a cashier at Mollusk Surf Shop that belongs to the Wild District. He’s 23 years old and strongly resembles Matty Healy. He’s taken.
Trigger Warnings: Violence, Gang Activity, Addiction.
Get to know him…
Drew holds two passions above all else: music, and surfing. It wasn’t always that way, though. The boy’s parents divorced when he was very young, due to his mother’s inability to leave behind some bad habits and his dad’s inability to put up with that. Drew’s dad took him and his brother out of that situation and into a brand new home in London, where Drew grew into the angsty teen he was destined to be. All of his pain and anger over his parent’s divorce funneled into habits that resembled his mother’s, and whether it was alcohol, sex, or drugs, it never seemed to be enough for him. He had felt as though he’d lost his family, and thought nothing would replace it. That is, until he was brought in to a ‘brotherhood’ by a childhood friend. This gang of what seemed to be petty criminals turned out to go much deeper than he originally thought. It wasn’t until he witnessed an attempted murder that he realized his life had really taken a turn for the worst. On that night, he prevented the murder, but only by beating one of his “brothers” to near death and letting their hostage free. Since then, he’s been on the run, fearing the gang would come back to repay him for the damage he’d caused them.
Welcome to the coast…
After a lot of running, Drew stumbled upon a little coastal town. It’s proximity to great surf and it’s secluded location seemed ideal to the boy just trying to reinvent himself. After battling himself over finally settling down, Drew picked a spot in the Wild District and hunkered down, hoping to live out the next few years of his life without worry of being found.
Stay a while…
Drew has lived in Costa Serena for a couple of years now. He is completely sober and crime free, focusing instead on his music and his job at the surf shop. He’s found himself a couple of close friends and has even started a band. He isn’t too keen on the idea of them making it far because he doesn’t want to be recognized by anyone from his past, but people are starting to pay attention to The Sharks, and Drew needs the gig money. Luckily, no one’s discovered him yet.
Connections:
Violet Parr (Best Friend/Crush): Drew and Violet have been friends since he moved to the coast, but lately he’s felt as though being friends isn’t enough. Unfortunately, he’s too afraid of losing her altogether to confess his true feelings for her.
The Sharks (Bandmates): Caleb and Bruce joined Drew’s band a few years ago. They’ve been inseparable ever since. From surfing to singing to spending time in the city, the three are rarely seen without each other.
Dory Azure (Coworker): Their love of the surfing brought them together, and Dory’s bubbly personality helps get Drew out of his shell every once in a while.
