it makes me wonder why seasmoke seems agitated enough to hiss and snap at syrax. they've known each other for literal years and he just left the dragonmont a day ago. maybe he really is just venting his frustrations.
ok but did we really need to give alicent a matching scar just to drive the point home that she and rhaenyra are "narrative soulmates" or whatever they're trying to do???
i half-expected aemond to have aegon's goons executed, but then again that's something impulsive enough that aegon himself would do. plus, aemond probably thinks they'd be more useful (i.e., miserable) at the wall.
y'know it really would've been nice if rhaena herself had told this story to someone in a moment of vulnerability or solidarity with baela. but instead, her previous misadventures in dragonriding are left offscreen and used as padding.
is it ever going to be addressed that the celtigars 🦀 have valyrian blood, since bartimos is making such a fuss?
the classism has been front and center this season, but i'm still iffy on how they're deciding to tackle the theme, considering a lot of medieval politics seem to go right over a lot of people's heads.
it's still so weird that mysaria can refer to aegon and aemond as rhaenyra's brothers, but she can't do that herself.
"let us raise an army of bastards" could've done without that line.
hm, corlys might've been hoping it was alyn, judging by the way he doesn't know how to speak to addam.
brave little oscar tully handled himself like a man. new favorite character unlocked. 🔓
idk if the blood sacrifice before the weirwood tree is going to have any degree of impact on the story, but god i want it to. we've spent so many episodes inside of a haunted castle and with a witch and her owl familiar, have the magic bolster the story!
look, i'm glad paddy is having fun but the "uneasy lies the head that wears a crown" is the most painfully obvious text they're shoving in my face and i don't appreciate it. 🙄
it's always rough watching physical therapy scenes but i appreciate that the show didn't just forget about aegon after 4 episodes and are portraying the actual magnitude of his injuries.
still, i can't help but be a bit frustrated that because of how s1 was structured, there was no recovery period for aemond after losing his eye that could've given insight to his mental and emotional state of mind.
if that's all we're going to get of jeyne arryn this season, then what an absolute waste of time! 😩
better watch your mouth, strong boy no. 1, 'cuz depending on the outcome of the war, your pasty ass could get booted from the line of succession and end up on the streets with the rest of those mongrels.
and like, attitude aside, i'm glad someone (who isn't telegraphed as the villain) is finally calling rhaenyra on her mistakes. it was bad enough when viserys was still alive and people were only making comments over the heads of her sons and behind her back, but now she's making such a crucial political error that when jace asks what the plan is after her supposed reign has ended, she can't even answer!
is elinda not allowed to wear anything less conspicuous? presumably it's for the audience, but with the amount of work she's doing out in the streets, someone would've had to have noticed by now.
hugh hammer gets a wife, sick child, reveal of his targaryen ancestry by way of saera, and i'm supposed to be impressed when nettles is nowhere to be seen or heard from because the showrunners decided she was redundant and blended her storyline with a character they racebent for the sake of diversity points??? 🤬🤬🤬
how are so many people leaving the city when they locked the gates 2 episodes ago?
as worried as i was about alicent pulling an ophelia, at least it would've been something like a gripping expression of mental illness brought upon by the tragedies she's suffered over the last couple episodes ................................. only for it to have been nothing of consequence.
see, when the dragonkeepers start unionizing, that's how you know it's time to call it quits.
maybe vermithor should've been fed before introducing dozens of strangers into his environment so that he would've been more amenable, but whose to say? it's a plan that requires more than a day's worth of thought.
i do not give a single FUCK about watching ulf stumble around in the dragonmont, stepping in eggs and dragon shit after the horror show of watching vermithor slaughter a bunch of innocent peasants and then cut to him having a jolly old time on his joyride!
really thought that shot of vhagar in the clouds was going to be in rook's rest. guess not.

Hello, you seem to be knowledgeable about god. Do you know where to find him and what his weaknesses are? I have dedicated my life to hunting him down and killing him for the indescribable amount of suffering he has directly or indirectly caused.
cw: violent language, including about fighting / killing God; as well as discussion of the Shoah / Holocaust later on in the post
(gonna start this long-ass response by saying that yes, i know this anon is probably joking about dedicating their life to hunting down God, but i’m gonna answer it like they’re serious because that’s the kind of person i am haha)
honestly anon, all power to ya! it sounds like my own understanding of God is quite different from yours (for instance, i would claim that God’s main weakness is actually Their best strength, which is compassion and steadfast solidarity) -- but the question of why God allows suffering is one i come back to all the damn time.
if you do track God down -- if God turns out to be a Being that can be tracked down to one location and time -- please do deliver my regards and my sincerest “WTF??”
you’re not the first to demand God answer for the suffering that’s happened on Their watch --
for if God is truly omnipotent, and truly all-loving, why don’t they do something about all this pain??? Indeed, the Bible is rich with similar demands -- from the psalmists to Job to Jesus himself from the cross (quoting a psalm, he cries, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me??”).
You might already know all this, but if not, the question of God’s place in suffering is often referred to as theodicy, at least in Christian circles.
That term comes from the Greek for god + justice, so what it literally means is “justifying (or vindicating) God”....which I’m not a huge fan of, because it implies that when we explore this question of where God is in suffering, we already know the result will be that God will be proven innocent (or at least “not guilty”).
But do we know that?? See the bottom of this post for an example of a time people of great faith found God guilty!
Anyway, theodicy describes intellectual efforts “to jerry-rig three mutually exclusive terms into harmony: divine power, goodness, and the experiences of evil.“ - Wendy Farley
If you want to learn more about theodicy and the way some theologians have “made sense” of suffering, check out this introductory post I’ve got.
Or wander through my whole #theodicy tag over on my other blog.
I invite you to explore theodicy not in any attempt to convince you of anything, but so you know some of the arguments you’re up against! Honestly, the more i explore theodicy, the less satisfied i am with any justifications for why God doesn’t intervene in the face of so much suffering...so if you do the reading and still conclude God is guilty, i’m not gonna tell you you’re definitely wrong.
Anyway. Like i said, you’re not alone in wanting answers for why God -- however, i don’t know that i’ve seen anyone else with your determination to find and kill God!
(Except, and i hate that i know this lol, that’s apparently the plot of the final season of Supernatural -- they find out God’s a total ass who not only is guilty of negligence but also directly responsible for a lot of suffering for his own sadistic enjoyment. so. they kill the bastard.)
Still, while i don’t know that i’ve seen too many people who want to take God out, the idea of wrestling God is pervasive -- especially within Judaism, but also among some Christians.
i’m very into wrestling God, myself, finding it far more faithful to the God who gifted us free will and invites us into true, mutual relationship than unquestioning obedience.
i have a whole #wrestling God tag over on my other blog.
For the most intense example of wrestling with God i’ve yet seen, with God put on trial and found guilty, keep reading.

cw: discussion of the Shoah / Holocaust below
You might connect to Elie Wiesel’s play The Trial of God, or the movie that was made based off it. Wiesel survived Nazi concentration camps but ceased to believe in God after what he suffered. His play was inspired by something he witnessed while a teen at Auschwitz:
"I witnessed a strange trial. Three rabbis—all erudite and pious men—decided one winter evening to indict God for allowing his children to be massacred. I remember: I was there, and I felt like crying. But nobody cried."
Robert McAfee Brown wrote more about this trial Wiesel witnessed:
“The trial lasted several nights. Witnesses were heard, evidence was gathered, conclusions were drawn, all of which issued finally in a unanimous verdict: the Lord God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, was found guilty of crimes against creation and humankind.”
Note that in 2008 when commenting on this event, Wiesel clarified that “At the end of the trial, they used the word chayav, rather than ‘guilty.’ It means ‘He owes us something.’”
In the chapter “No God, Only Auschwitz” of his book Embracing Hopelessness, Miguel A. De La Torre comments on this verdict by explaining that if God wasn’t going to intervene, then God must at the least speak -- but instead, God was silent:
“God must be held accountable for refusing to speak to those yearning for God’s voice. Something. Anything. A note of solidarity. A testament of love, accompaniment. But they hear and receive nothing. The trial...ends with God owing us something.
De La Torre goes on to describe the play Wiesel wrote based on this memory, which actually takes place in a 1649 Ukranian village, rather than at Auschwitz. The Cossacks raid the village and kill all but two of its Jewish residents.
“In Wiesel’s play, he has the inkeeper Berish voice the same questions those sitting in death camps centuries later asked, if not audibly, then silently:
‘To mention God’s mercy in Shamgorod [Auschwitz] is an insult. Speak of his cruelty instead. ...I want to understand why. He is giving strength to the killers and nothing but tears and the shame of helplessness to the victims. ...Either he is responsible or He is not. If He is, let’s judge him; if He is not, let him stop judging us. ...
‘[I] accuse Him of hostility, cruelty and indifference. ...Either He knows what’s happening to us, or He doesn’t wish to know! In both cases He is...guilty! Would a father stand by, quietly, silently, and watch his children being slaughtered?’”
De La Torre continues with his own thoughts on all this:
“The horrors humanity faces indict God as being less loving and attentive than sinful parents. I hesitate to make any pronouncements as to the character of God because in the final analysis, I lack any empirical knowledge upon which to base my study. Still with all my heart and being I want to say: my God is the God of the oppressed who incarnates Godself among the least of these.
I want to make this bold claim based on the testimony of the gospel witness. But in the midst of the dark night, I confess this hopeful belief is at best a tenet accepted by faith, lacking any means of proving the truth or falsehood of the claim. In the shadow of Auschwitz, though I am not Jewish, nonetheless I am left wondering if the precious Deity who notices the fall of a sparrow is blind to God’s children crushed in the winepress. Do I dare wonder if God is the God of the oppressors?
...Or maybe this is a God who really wants to do good, but lacks the power to do anything in the face of inhumanity. ..."
There’s one more piece to this tale of Wiesel’s witness of the trial of God at Auschwitz. And that is that, after declaring God guilty (or chayav)...
...after what Wiesel describes as an "infinity of silence", the Talmudic scholar looked at the sky and said "It's time for evening prayers", and the members of the tribunal recited Maariv, the evening service. (McAfee Brown)
...That ending is the part that astounds and awes me. These Jewish prisoners at Auschwitz find God guilty -- and then proceed to pray as they always do. I am reminded of what my Jewish friends as well as various Jewish scholars have told me: that Judaism is totally compatible with wrestling with God and even with disbelief. Whether these Jewish prisoners believed God even existed, they prayed -- because that tradition of prayer is what unites them to one another, to their people.
As De La Torre closes his telling of Wiesel’s story,
“At the conclusion of the movie God on Trial, based on the events Wiesel described, shortly after the barrack inmates find God guilty, and those chosen are marched to the gas chamber, they cover their heads and pray. ...
Believers and unbelievers who took the audacious act of placing God on trial do what is totally illogical -- in the midst of their hopelessness they demonstrate their faith as they march toward the gas chambers, or they defiantly embrace who they are while still remaining in heated conversation, damning God. It matters not if God still hears their prayers, or if there even is a God to hear; they still pray, they still debate -- not for God’s sake, but for their own.”
And that brings me to the one bit of actual advice I’ll give you, anon:
If you want to spend your life “hunting God down,” as I said, all power to you! But I do suggest you ponder for whose sake you do so -- and whether you do so for justice or just revenge. What good does such a quest do for those who are suffering now? Are their other paths you could follow that would bring more good? What about your own healing? I imagine you’re not interested in repairing any relationship with religion -- would walking away from God rather than hounding God be a more healing and fruitful path for your finite life?
I’ll close with one more quote from De La Torre, from the very end of his chapter:
“As I stroll through what was once the concentration camp of Dachau, I am cognizant that this space witnessed the unspeakable horrors that befell God’s children at the hands of Christians hoping for a better, purer society and future. ...So do not offer me your words of hope; offer me your praxis for justice. ...In the midst of unfathomable suffering, the earth’s marginalized no longer need pious pontifications about rewards in some hereafter. Nor do they need their oppressors providing the answers for their salvation. What is needed is disruption of the norm to push humanity toward an unachievable justice.
When there is nothing to lose, when work does not set you free, not only are multiple possibilities opened up with new opportunities for radical change unimaginable to those playing it safe; but also a venue is provided by which to get real with whatever this God signifies. ...”

Frozen 3 concept
I'mma start off with explaining that I'm not the biggest fan of Frozen and I'm definitely not a fan of Elsa's character in general.
But as much as I love the songs and outfits of the second movie, the inconsistencies and how it never explains how sh🤬 works in the world with magic and such are just infuriating. As well as why the spirit that connects them controls ice which is just a variation of water. And how the Frozen franchise just loves to make Elsa more special within every installment.
I am so very tired of it. So I came up with a way that it could all be fixed and make sense if they make a third movie.
Also to note that Anna and Elsa are supposed to be two halves of the fifth spirit but that's VERY briefly touched in movie (quote: well actually a bridge has two sides and mother had two daughters) and Disney themselves take Elsa as the fifth spirit alone so that's stupid.
Why Elsa specifically controls ice
We all know how we're frustrated with the fact that Elsa is supposed to connect all the elements when she only controls ice.
But let's think about it from another prospective. The first movie is based about the seasons. It's a seasonal theme rather than an elemental theme like in its sequel. So why not bring that back?
The enchanted forest cannot be the ONLY place that has mystical spirits. What if there were three other forests with their own fifth spirits and each fifth spirit represented a season?
And each seasonal spirit's magic is a mix of two elements.
Elsa/Winter: Ice = water + air
Spring: Plants = water + earth
Summer: Lava = earth + fire
Fall: Lightning/Storms = air + fire
This still fits in with the fact that the fifth spirit can play back moments in time as well. Each spirit has their own Ahtohallan. Elsa's is made of ice because it's just frozen water and the water is was plays back those moments in time.
Spring's would be like an island made of plants, fungi and marsh. Plants have water running within them so they can take the form of moments in time like Elsa's ice statues.
Summer's would be a volcano with a river flowing through it. Lava and water can mix to create lava rocks. When doing so the memories within that water would be imbedded into the rocks they form and therefore be able to play moments in time as rock statues.
Autumn's would basically be a fog bank with almost ghostly figures making up the memories since fog is a mist, aka: water. Kinda like the scene where Elsa fights the wind spirit and their powers mix for a moment.
Where the others come from
For this, I decided to look around other lands within that side of the world that has legends of spirits. I decided upon:
Spring = Scotland
Summer = Arabia
Fall/Autumn = Japan
I chose for Arabia to be summer, of course , because it's a desert country so it very hot. Japan is autumn because it's culture and everything just always reminded be of the beauty of fall. And Scotland is spring because that's what was left and when I think of Scotland, I think of it's green forests and plants.
Nothing too deep.
Personalities
You think I'd make Summer hotheaded and spring, giddy and bouncy, right?
No, because you see, as I've stated in another post of mine; Why Frozen Doesn't Work In The Big Four, I explained how Elsa's personality reconciles more with summer. The opposite season of her own.
Elsa is kinda quiet, gentle, diplomatic, practical, worries silently and is angelically innocent (even though she doesn't deserve to be).
All are traits relating to summer. So if her personality is opposed to her season, then it'd be the same for the other fifth spirits.
Spring would be a leader, confident, energetic, true to a cause, dependable, easily irritated and stubborn.
Summer would be reserved, well mannered, a good listener, natural poise and pessimistic.
And autumn would be energetic, tender-hearted, optimistic, friendly and overly talkative.
How the spirits work
I fully believe that the spirits have no physical form but rather inhabit certain things. Basically possession but the spirits don't have control over themselves once they choose a vessel and depending on the solidarity of what their element is, determines what kind of vessel they need.
The wind spirit is said to be a playful spirit and would want to make its own choices. Being an element you can't hold, it doesn't really need a host.
Water is liquid and needs something to be it's host but doesn't necessarily need something alive. Therefore it can inhabit a small animal or it inhabits its own element, hence a water horse.
Fire isn't a solid or liquid but it's not necessarily a gas either. Fire always needs to burn on something in order to burn. Therefore it cannot just make out it's own body like water but it doesn't need a large vessel. Hence, a little salamander.
Earth is the most solid of them all so it would need multiple hosts in order to sustain itself. That's why there are multiple earth giants and not just one like the other spirits.
I believe the spirits don't have control over their actions once they choose a host because all the spirits (besides wind) seem to not know what's even going on most of the time. And that would explain why the spirits didn't get rid of the dam themselves, because their vessels didn't know that was the problem.
I also believe that they need a host to begin with because they are actually susceptible to death. As it has been confirmed that Elsa is NOT immortal and there wouldn't have been a legend of a fifth spirit if people hadn't seen one before.
It would also explain how the spirits drove the citizens out of Arendelle without physically being there; they managed to leave their hosts for a time in order to do so. Along with what the light that Elsa was following at Ahtohallan, was. The fifth spirit was able to sustain itself by staying in its birth place and activated the memory of Elsa's mom singing, to bring Elsa there and when Elsa's dress transforms is when the spirit possesses her.
Why does the fifth spirit need to be human? Because humans are more durable. The fifth spirit doesn't control anything completely solid like rock so it doesn't need multiple vessels but it also controls more than a single element, therefore is too much to figure out/control for just any animal.
That's why it chose a very young child to give it's powers to rather than the person who actually did the deed of saving their enemy. It needs to be someone who will have the time to learn and control their powers by adulthood.
(Despite Elsa not truly being worthy and being a horrible sister, she was already chosen at birth and she at least gets the job done. At everyone else's expense but still.)
Plot
How would the seasonal spirits meet? Why would they leave their homes for this? What brings them together?
The four sided snowflake represents the elements connected to the winter spirit. Every season would have their own version of this. But there are also four seasons just like there are four elements.
Tumblr media
So, could there be a fifth spirit for the fifth spirits? A fifth spirit to connect the seasons and if so, what is it? What's their power?
I believe, much like the winter spirit called to Elsa, the ultimate fifth spirit will call all the seasonal spirit's to come together at a single location. Anna would come with Elsa as well, of course, and during their journey, they'd all eventually meet each other along the way.
Eventually Anna would start to feel a little neglected when Elsa keeps talking to / about the other people who also have magic. Anna doesn't wish for magic, but she wishes for Elsa to finally see herself and Anna as equals (because Elsa clearly wouldn't after finding others like herself, let's be real). So Anna goes off to have her own sort of "Show Yourself" moment and is the one to find the location they've been looking for which is where she becomes their fifth spirit; the Aurora Borealis.
It was in one of the original scripts for the first movie that Anna was gonna have the power to control the Aurora Borealis, but then the creators decided that took away from Elsa's agency for self isolation due to her powers.
It's true that Anna having been able to accomplish what she did without powers is one of her best attributes but Anna becoming the light spirit is really the only way she's gonna get any appreciation within the fan base or the disney community. Plus Anna's done all the work to begin with so she deserves it.
With the other spirits being seasonal & elemental, it would only make sense for the one to connect them all would be light.
But all the spirits also have an opposite to balance them out:
Fire | Water
Earth | Air
Winter | Summer
Spring | Autumn
So maybe the reason they were all being called there is because Light's opposite is Darkness and it's plotting to take them all out. They are in charge of keeping balance and darkness wants to create chaos. But you also need darkness for balance, so maybe someone else will be with them through the journey and become the vessel for darkness in order to control it. Because, again, spirits have no control once they have a host.
This could be a possible redemption arc for Hans. We could learn about what he's been through and what truly drove him to be the bad guy because from what we know of his brothers, they were really bad. I think he just really lost a nerve due to unintentional (or intentional) abuse and was trying to prove to his family that he was better than they believed. People who suffer from abuse can be irrational like that.
I think it would be a phenomenal thing for him to overcome his inner darkness while also taking control of the literal spirit of darkness.
Metaphorical-wise it's beautiful.
Art/Designs
I edited the other seasons + Anna off of concept art for Elsa's white dress while Hans is kinda my own creation but I still used his concept art for a base. Everything after that are purely original.

Hey! Loving the Merlin takes on ur blog, and I wanted to ask—what are your opinions on Morgana? Haven’t seen a lot of talk abt her. I loved her, esp in season 1, which is also my fav season cuz after that I feel like things started to make less and less sense, lmao. I understand her descent into villainy (mostly, but why does she start to hate Gwen so quickly? feel like that could’ve been handled better) but I would’ve loved to see some solidarity between her and merlin!!!!!
hi there! :D
so, i LOVE morgana.  most of what i’ve said about her has been in the tags of gifsets that are now scattered haphazardly around my blog; i don’t think there are larger pieces yet besides my finale round-up (urgh lol), and most of that is just a function of time - i can’t possibly write expansive tracts of meta about every single merlin thing i love, because i love the whole show; i’d never leave my computer again.  i generally sit down to write long essays about whatever grabs my mind at a particular moment, even though there are a bazillion other things out there i love just as much. XD
but with morgana, i also feel like part of the reason i haven’t written much about her is because up until three and a half weeks ago (....oh my god, was it THREE AND A HALF WEEKs???  IT FEELS LIKE A YEAR) i hadn’t even finished the series yet, and the whole time i was watching this show i was sort of...waiting to see whether they would finally tie her arc together.  i didn’t feel like i could say too much about what was happening with her, because my evaluation of her arc was going to depend on where the writers finally chose to take it and whether they brought it to the place i thought it needed to go.
and...they didn’t, obviously, which is what i sort of suspected would happen, though i was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt all the way up until the end, because i don’t believe they ever wrote themselves into a corner with her.  there were things they could have handled with more depth, definitely, but i do not believe that they ever dug themselves into a hole they couldn’t climb out of.
i. what happened to you, morgana
essentially my opinion (just mine; nobody else is obligated to share it) of morgana is this: that the series ended before her arc was over.
to me, season 5 was the nadir in our characters’ journeys.  they had reached their lowest point, their...“darkest hour,” to quote the show itself.  and in many familiar storytelling formats (the ones that have the most in common with bbc merlin, at least), we take our characters to a moment where they hit rock bottom, where everything is going wrong and things seem hopeless, and then we light a spark under their butts that starts the process where they fight their way out of it.  the nadir isn’t the endpoint of the curve; it’s the point where characters start climbing their long, slow way out of the pit.  it’s what they have to overcome in order to earn their eventual triumphant ending.
to me, season 5 was that nadir, for morgana and everyone else.  i never would have imagined season 5 to be the final season of the show, if i hadn’t known it was beforehand. i would have read season 5 as the show’s ‘empire strikes back’ moment.  the episode that ends with our team losing, but with a whole other episode remaining where they can fight to Make It Right.
i view merlin bbc as tantamount to a cancelled tv show, to be honest.  i know that’s not necessarily what happened (though it does feel pretty weird that they officially announced S5 would be the final season only four weeks before the finale was about to air??  very bizarre), but regardless of the actual behind-the-scenes-whatever, the fact of the matter is that for me, the series doesn’t end.  it stops.  and those two things are not the same.
this is particularly relevant to morgana because, as you said, there are aspects of her character arc that weren’t handled as deftly as they could have been, but if the show had brought morgana’s arc to the place where it felt like they were going in 5.09, they could have rescued so much of what came before.
to get into more detail -
i think the biggest issue with morgana’s arc for me isn’t so much what she does, it’s what we’re not shown as she does it.
i fully believe that morgana would eventually start working to ensure uther’s downfall.  (obviously.  she’s been presented as the voice of moral authority on this show since episode one, and there’s no reason to believe that she wouldn’t ultimately start rebelling against the king’s oppressive policies.)  i believe that she would reject arthur, eventually.  and i believe that she would reject gwen, too.  but i don’t believe the show illustrates enough how painful this would be for her, or how conflicted it would make her feel.
and again, as i said, there are my own personal opinions, couched in...some personal experience with certain kinds of family conflict - but i do understand where morgana’s bitterness toward arthur and gwen comes from.  arthur, for all that he’s “a better man than [his] father,” never fully breaks with uther the way morgana does.  he has his own little rebellions, yes, but ultimately he always falls in line.  he tolerates his father’s actions even if he doesn’t necessarily agree with them, and he continues to support uther even after uther is revealed to have lied about being morgana’s illegitimate father.  and because of this tacit acceptance of uther’s poor behavior, arthur reaps benefits and privileges galore.  morgana is cast out with nothing, whereas arthur, who didn’t even take a stand for justice, wants for nothing.  arthur is sitting pretty on the throne of camelot because he continued to bestow his honor and respect upon a man who deserved neither of those things, because he chose the villain of the series over his sister, even knowing what uther did to her.  and that’s gutting, for her.  he betrayed her.
(and there are things to be said on arthur’s end of this, too, of course - morgana doesn’t ever confide in him; she doesn’t come to him for help or give him a chance to even be informed about what happened to her before she jumps into invading camelot and dethroning uther - so for arthur, her sudden turnaround comes as a total shock, and HE feels betrayed, like he has no choice but to fight her - i mean, it’s just a big mess.)
but i understand why she hates him.  he continues to stand with a man who did demonstrable evil, despite the harm that was specifically done to morgana herself.  and by shutting up and letting atrocities be committed in front of him, arthur escapes the harm that morgana suffers for speaking up.  i understand why morgana is so bitter about it.
and gwen is a very similar situation - from morgana’s point of view, gwen is playing the arthur to arthur’s uther.  gwen sides with arthur over morgana, despite knowing full well that arthur’s policies harm people with magic.  gwen abandons morgana for her love interest, and for morgana that’s just like - “why would you do that?  i was your friend before he ever cared about you, i loved you before he ever did - don’t you see the evil he’s perpetuating?  don’t you care what he does to people like me?”
that’s why morgana tells merlin, “don’t think i don’t understand loyalty just because i’ve got no one left to be loyal to.”  she feels like everybody who supposedly cared for her ultimately dumped her because her situation interfered with their comfortable, morally uncomplicated lives.  they weren’t willing to acknowledge what was done to her, and they stuck by the man responsible for it, and it seems incomprehensible to her, that they would make that choice, when his misdeeds are known and out in the open.  i can’t blame her for wanting to raze the city to the ground.
HOWEVER.
while i believe that all these things are completely plausible, i don’t believe that the series shows us appropriately how these things would be tearing morgana apart inside, underneath the rage and the armored front of  ‘you brought this on yourself, so burn in hell, i don’t care.’
there are moments where the show gets it right.  when morgana wakes up after uther dies and says that she felt his pain - it’s not presented as gloating; she’s - almost confused.  uncertain.  like she doesn’t know what she feels.  when she confronts arthur at the end of season 4 (i thought we were friends/as did i) there’s real pain under the surface there.  when they confront each other at the beginning of season 5, too (what happened to you, morgana/i grew up) - you can feel the undercurrent of something deeper there, too.  and that moment with mordred in 5.09, when he appeals to her humanity (i hope one day you will find the love and compassion which used to fill your heart) - that is an amazing scene.  the show absolutely nails that moment.  morgana hesitates.  you can see the grief and the - the conflict written all over her face.  it’s perfect.  it’s exactly the turn i would have expected morgana’s arc to be taking, at that time in the series.
but then the show just stopped.  and without taking morgana’s arc further - without following it through all the way to its conclusion - there’s never any resolution to all the ways the show dropped the ball earlier.  all the moments where morgana appears to be just...evil-smirking her way through her revenge, the way she suddenly seems to have no feelings for gwen whatsoever, the utterly lost opportunity that was the “enchanted gwen” arc (which could have been such a powerful exploration of their broken relationship) - all those could have eventually made sense and fit into a narrative where morgana’s conflicted feelings finally begin to escape the stranglehold in which she has them choked, where we start to see the pain of these destroyed relationships rising to the surface.
i can understand how morgana would just - shut off her feelings about these people.  she had to close her heart to them - the alternative would have been too painful.  but underneath - we know it wouldn’t be that easy.  we know it eats at her.  and it’s just - so incredibly frustrating that the series was starting to go there - the moment with mordred in 5.09 feels like the beginning of morgana’s big crisis of faith - and then the show just Stops.
so the thing about morgana for me is that, like you said, the show does drop the ball on illustrating her quick descent into evil-villain territory, and they especially drop the ball on her break with gwen, but all of it could have been salvaged, if they had committed to following her arc all the way through to its conclusion.  instead they chose to kill her (and everybody else, lol) just as her deep-rooted internal conflicts were finally starting to rise to the surface.
ii. we can find another way/there is no other way (aka the merlin problem)
i’ll say right up front that anything i say here is, as always, just my personal interpretation of things.  this is not necessarily the One True Way this show is meant to be understood; it’s just my own preferred read.
i have definitely seen some things in my brief foray into internet fandom that are sort of...piling on merlin for abandoning morgana or “gaslighting” her, most of which seem to be centered around the beginning of episode 2.03, which is weird to me, because the whole point of that episode is that merlin does help morgana, in the end - he’s the one who doesn’t gaslight her.  he defies gaius and takes her to the druids, specifically so they can tell her yes, she does have magic.  he tries to distract the attacking knights in order to enable morgana to escape with the druids permanently, like she wants.  and when the attempt fails, and they’re brought back to camelot, he comes to morgana’s chambers specifically to check on her and to assure her that he won’t reveal her secret to anyone, and she’s grateful for this - she thanks him, she’s appreciative of everything he did for her, she feels comforted to know the truth and to know that someone else knows it, too.  this episode ends with their relationship at a high point - it’s overwhelmingly positive, and it doesn’t take a nosedive until 1.12, when morgana gets in way over her head and merlin thinks she’s trying to murder them all.  (and even in that episode, it’s worth it to note, merlin is still covering for her magic in front of arthur, giving her chances.)
(and obviously also, of course, the end of that particular situation gets Real Bad Real Fast, which could be a whole post in and of itself, so let’s stay focused on the earlier eps, for now.)
the criticism of merlin in those earlier episodes seems to stem solely from the fact that he doesn’t out himself to morgana, which i can understand - i mean, i like the idea of a ‘merlin+morgana secret magic squad’ AU as much as anyone - but i’ll be honest and say that nowadays, i’m not quite as willing to condemn him for it as i might have been on my first viewing.
i’m not willing to condemn him for it at all, actually.
(and again - as i said, these are my own opinions!  everybody else is welcome to have different opinions!  we all engage with media differently, and there isn’t a right or wrong way to approach this situation, just whichever way feels best to you.)
so, for me, i’m not interested anymore in telling merlin that he should have revealed himself to anyone, at that point in the story.  it would be different if he had been like - continuing to tell morgana ‘oh, no, you don’t have magic, don’t be crazy,’ or if he had been pretending to hate magic like everyone else so he could blend in, but he doesn’t do that, at the end of the episode.  he sends her to the druids.  he chases after her when he realizes she's in danger.  he openly acknowledges her magic, he supports her in having it, he makes sure she knows she has nothing to fear from him.  by the end of 2.03, he’s gone to great lengths to help her; he’s already made certain that she knows he’s on her side and that she can trust him.  she clearly knows that he accepts her and that he supports her - those are his responsibilities to her as a fellow human and as a friend, and those are exactly the responsibilities he makes sure to fulfill.  she knows her secret is safe with him.
now - whether or not merlin feels safe enough to out himself, after making sure morgana knows he accepts and supports her, is his own business.
i think there are a number of reasons why it wouldn’t be fair for me to criticize merlin for continuing to conceal his secret, the first of which is something i already mentioned in another piece - that a marginalized person’s first responsibility is to their own safety, when forced into hiding under oppressive social conditions.  merlin isn’t obligated to reveal himself for anybody.  he’s not obligated to put himself in danger out of some kind of...responsibility to the community.  (not at this point, anyway.  it gets more complicated later, as merlin becomes more powerful, which i also address in that other piece, but that’s all in the future for him and not relevant at this moment.)
i think it would be easy for me to forget that merlin isn’t safe, in the early seasons.  we’re so used to thinking of merlin as ‘the greatest sorcerer to ever walk the earth,’ because that’s what we keep being told he’s going to become, but again, that’s all so far in the future for him.  merlin in the early seasons can do some things with his abilities, but not consistently, and not to the level where we can reasonably expect him to resist the entirety of camelot’s army, if they were to come for him.  merlin is in real danger, and he’s not evil for being unwilling to share a secret about himself that would ensure his death, if it somehow got back to the wrong people.
second - i don’t think it would be fair for me to discount merlin’s personal history, either.  merlin’s life didn’t start in camelot, and he hasn’t even been in camelot for all that long, comparatively, by the time we get to S2.  season one takes place over a few months, starting in either spring or summer and ending in the fall (after the referenced harvest in 1.10/1.11, but before winter sets in).  the weather is nice by time season 2 starts, so we can probably assume that S2 takes place once winter has passed (although, it’s technically possible that S2 takes place over the same autumn as S1, I guess...but it’s not made clear to us, timeline-wise.)  either way, we just really have to remember that merlin’s stay in camelot by the time we reach 2.03 is still this blip compared to the rest of his life.
it would be very easy for me to say that merlin should have told morgana, that there’s no way she would ever have given him up - and i probably would have said that very thing, after the first time i watched the show - but like - nowadays, i really think i have to step back from that certainty and be a little more gentle.  we say we “know” that morgana wouldn’t have willingly betrayed merlin’s secret at that point, and sure, i agree, that’s probably true - but does merlin know that?
of course not!
i think he hopes that.  i think he would dearly like to believe that.  i also think merlin grew up in a situation where he couldn’t fully trust even the people he’d known all his life, with two (vital!!!) exceptions, and he has been in camelot with a bunch of brand-new people for less than a year, and he can’t be certain of them, however much he wants to be.  (and that’s not even considering the possibility of accidental betrayals, or coerced ones - remember, the witchfinder shows up in S2 also, as just one example.)
remember that exchange merlin has with freya, later this season?
“you can’t always trust people.”
“i know.  that’s why i left home.”
merlin is not used to showing himself to people.  he has been taught all his life to NEVER, EVER show himself to anybody.  everyone in camelot who finds out about his magic finds out either by accident (like gaius or lancelot), or necessity (like freya and gilli - though gilli is interesting, because i think merlin’s decisions there are motivated precisely by the choices he didn’t make with morgana - which i’ll go into more later).
in twenty-odd years, merlin has only ever told one person about his magic.  and even that generous assumption requires a little bit of inferencing for us to determine, though i think it’s likely enough, if not confirmable.
(i am, in case it’s unclear, referencing 1.10, when merlin is explaining to will why hunith sent him away to camelot: “when she found out you knew - she was so angry.”  that, to me, has always been a signifier that merlin told will about his magic, as opposed to will finding out by coincidence.  i know there are a lot of headcanons floating around out there about various...accidental situations that may have occurred which forced merlin to reveal his magic in front of will, and those are all obviously totally fun to play with, but after hearing this particular line - i never understood that to be the case, to be honest.  we’ve seen hunith enough to have a pretty solid understanding of her character.  she and merlin are always easy and gentle together, she’s so kind and calm and thoughtful - i can’t imagine that she wouldn’t have understood, if there had been some kind of accident that forced merlin’s hand.  she’d be just as afraid for his future safety, of course, and she would have wished he’d told her right away, but she wouldn’t have been “so angry.”
...she might, however, have been “so angry” if she’d found out that merlin had specifically undermined every sacrifice she’d ever made to keep him safe/ignored every single one of her warnings/rejected every cautious thing she’d been telling him for his entire life and TOLD somebody about his magic when it wasn’t remotely necessary.  that’s the only scenario i can imagine that would prompt merlin to say “she was SO angry” in that half-awed, half-intimidated tone, with that little headshake, like it was such a singular event, like it’s still formidable for him to remember.)
so anyway, that said - it’s too easy for me to say ‘he should have told morgana/gwaine/gwen etc; they would never have turned on him,’ as if it would have been such a simple thing for him to do, as if there were no dangers associated with their knowledge even if they would never have willingly given him up, as if he was refusing to do it because he didn’t want to, or because his fears were overblown, or because he was foolish for thinking they would ever hate him for his gifts.  i think that really minimizes the reality of his struggle, and the danger of his situation.  without the pressure of some crisis to force his hand, merlin has only ever willingly revealed himself to one person.  that person is dead.  that person died specifically ensuring that merlin could stay safe and hidden from the rest of the world, morgana included - merlin’s continued secrecy is a gift that was bought at an impossibly high price, and it’s not simple for him to contemplate squandering it, especially with no guarantee that things will turn out okay.
because there IS no guarantee that things will turn out okay!  a lot of the “merlin should have told morgana” online talk centers around the idea that knowing about merlin’s magic would have kept morgana from feeling alone/betrayed, thus preventing her from turning to the “evil” methods she uses later, but again, i don’t think we actually know that at all.  solidarity between merlin and morgana would have been a nice thing, definitely; i’d like to see that too, but i don’t think the fact that she and merlin are both magic-users would have guaranteed harmony between them.  merlin and gilli are both magic-users, too, and merlin expects this to be enough to convince gilli to “see the light,” but the fact of the matter is that merlin and gilli just have very different ideas about what it means to do the right thing.  merlin thinks it means biding his time and waiting for change to come from the top (because he’s been TOLD by greater powers that this is the right course of action, of course; let’s note again that merlin’s situation is extremely complicated) whereas gilli thinks that doing things merlin’s way makes merlin complicit with an unjust regime.  gilli says ‘i shouldn’t haven’t to wait for someone else to give me my rights.  i’m going to take them myself.’
the fact that merlin and gilli share a bond as magic-users doesn’t protect them from an ideological divide that puts them on different sides of the same struggle.  i’m not sure that merlin and morgana wouldn’t have still ended up in the same situation, eventually, if merlin had chosen to out himself to her - but doing so would certainly have made him a thousand times more vulnerable to attack.
third - it’s also important to remember that if we’re going to hold merlin to this rigid ‘he should have told morgana everything/confided in her/trusted her at the expense of possibly his own life despite the fact that she exists at the completely opposite end of a rigid social hierarchy as him and he’s known her for less than a year’ then maybe we ought to raise the bar for morgana, as well.  morgana is very clearly shown to trust and appreciate merlin at the end of 2.03, but by 2.11, when alvarr and mordred show up and convince her to steal the crystal of neahtid, she doesn’t hesitate or come to merlin at all, despite the fact that we never see him do anything to lose her trust between then and now.  she never asks him for help, even when she’s uncertain about alvarr’s methods, and that leaves merlin in the dark, only privy to confusing images of her sneaking around and acting suspicious.  and even with that, merlin doesn’t condemn her for what she does, the same way he doesn’t blame her when she tries to kill uther in 1.12 - he helps arthur retrieve the crystal, but he doesn’t give morgana up.  and he doesn’t hold any kind of grudge, either - in the next episode, merlin doesn’t even suspect her, at first - he thinks it must be her magic protecting her; he doesn’t even consider the idea that she has anything to do with the illness, not until kilgharrah tells him.
and even after that, he STILL covers for her in front of arthur, and he gives her a chance to come clean to him - but she doesn’t take it.
i’m not condemning her for that - i get why she would be afraid to admit to such a big mess - she was in way over her head and didn’t know what to do.  but if we’re going to cut morgana this much slack and accept her fears as a valid enough reason to block a potential moment of connection, then we have to accept that merlin’s fears were valid, too - morgana’s descent into “villainy” was not something we can pin solely on merlin’s already overburdened shoulders.  the end of season 2 was not some kind of one-way failure.
in summary: merlin and morgana were trapped in an impossible situation.  they were both victims of the same oppressive regime, and both of them had very real, very dangerous obstacles to letting themselves trust in and reach out to others, and i think pitting them against each other while forgetting who the real villain was is unfair to them both.
also, a brief postscript: circling back to the first section of this piece, where i talked about how season 5 just stopped before anyone’s arc was finished - merlin and morgana could have had so much more, if we’d gotten another season.  their relationship is really in the pits, by season 5, but there is this deleted scene where arthur is reflecting on what happened to morgana and blaming himself, and merlin says arthur shouldn’t take the blame, that “there were others better placed to help morgana” (implicating, of course, himself) and that was SUCH a jumping off point for their story to have continued.  merlin wanted to do better by her.  he blamed himself for what happened to her.  and morgana, for her part, was starting to question herself, as we saw during her confrontation with mordred in 5.09.
there were places for this relationship to go.  it wasn’t a lost cause.  but the writers decided that it made more sense to just...eliminate everybody at the exact moment when things were poised to possibly change.
the story wasn’t over at the end of season 5.  but the show was, and i am always going to regret those many lost opportunities.

2019 in Fic
Tagged by @starsandskies love you uwu
Favorite fic you wrote this year:  Blood Dragon 1 and a 1/2. Though the Formerly New Years fic with Grant, Nic and @amistrio‘s Matthew putting John on blast is shaping up to be a fun ride, and technically I wrote some of it on New Years Eve so it counts.
Least favorite fic you wrote this year: The main one I can think of is Blood on My Name. It’s not bad/I don’t hate it, but I was already like... four chapters in before I realized that for bunker fics you absolutely need a solid plot and I... didn’t have one for the bunker/what’s supposed to be the main brunt of it, and that’s why its suffering now.
Favorite line/scene you wrote this year:
Haven’t gotten that far in the published part, but in one Last Line Memes for the fake dating AU I have that bit where John’s dealing with Nic’s father for her and her mother and her dad asks him who he is:
“Me? I’m the monster you should’ve been weaving stories about to your daughter at night instead of beating the shit out of her mother in the next room.”
Also, another Last Line meme thing whose fic didn’t get published yet:
“Robin Hood and Maid Marian, he’s coming your way. Get ready to tail,” came Cameron Burke’s voice.
“Robin Hood and Maid Marian?” Nicolette Raylan muttered into her mic from her spot right beside him. “Do we really need the codenames? Is this your attempt at bonding again, Burke? Because you’re past the New Guy stage.”
“I don’t mind being called Robin Hood,” John cut in.
“She’s Robin Hood. You’re Marian,” Burke corrected.
John shut his mouth firmly and tried to drown out Nicolette’s answering cackle.
Total number of words you wrote this year:  ~140,000
Most popular fic this year: On AO3: My Way, though technically I published in 2018, most of it was in 2019. Not including that, Blood on My Name. On here: We’ll Meet Again, where me, the Anti Angst Queen, went and got angsty and y’all were very mad.
Least popular fic this year:  On AO3:  Going off of AO3′s stats where it’s the least popular of the top 5: Helpless. Which personally makes no sense to me, but hey, that’s the style of digging I wanna do currently.  On here: Two little Johnnic ficlets were tied. One where he’s trying to convince her to stay in bed and not go to see Joseph, and John/Nic/Sharky where Sharky was off adventuring with Hurk and they welcome him home . Actually I’m sure the Mafia 3 ones were less popular but I have no idea how I tagged them.
Longest completed fic you wrote this year: My Way, though again, not counting that one, Home, at  4834 words. Because what is this “completed” of which they speak?
Shortest completed fic you wrote this year: That same little “John’s a needy lil shit and wants his wife’s attention focused all on him and not his brother” bit
Longest WIP of the year: Blood on My Name
Shortest WIP of the year: I’ve got an unpublished soulmate AU in the works at about ~700 words so far.
Favorite character to write about this year: John Seed. Or lbr my gal Nic. Though Cal’s fun too. Is just saying “the Raylans” as a unit cheating?
Favorite writing song/artist/album of this year: Andy Grammer still owns my ass and I’ve written to / had fics based on a good chunk of his discography.
A fic you didn’t expect to write: Never thought I’d actually do a soulmate AU and yet here we are. Also, forgive the sudden fandom switch but I didn’t expect to EVER breathe life back into my Bitten fic from like... four or five years ago but then y’all finally discovered Jeremy Danvers. It only took y’all two years too long.
Fic(s) you completed this year: My Way, random oneshots, We’ll Meet Again, Home, etc. I played it safe and kept a lot of stuff short and sweet and all my WIPs suffered, but that’s because I’m an idiot who bites off more than they can chew all the time.
Fics you’ll continue next year: Blood on My Name, the Tremors AU, the Fake Dating AU, the Soulmate AU, Flu Season 2, that one... US Marshals AU. A L L  T H E   A U s
Current number of WIPs: I’m afraid to look tbh.
Any new fics to start next year: I mean it’s not ‘start start’ but as mentioned there’s that soulmate AU I want to actively get going with instead of jotting a couple of things down. I wanna try my luck at more than one Gatthew fic but we’ll see.
Most memorable comment/review:  Again, around the start of the Fandom Drama I Was Unknowingly Involved In That I Only Had an Inkling Was Going On, I had started to sense that people had started to hate Nic/the content I had for her and I was feeling super low about a lot and I threw one of the ficlets up on AO3 or whatever for shits and giggles, someone commented “Yay! Nic’s back!” and I honest to God cried happy tears. Also, general shouting in Discord/jokes about John not deserving Grant OR Matthew somehow giving birth to the Good Ship Gatthew and I love it to pieces.
Events you participated in this year:  Far Cry 5 Week, and the Secret Santa my discord server is doing.
Fics you wanted to write but didn’t: Christmas/New Years Eve Gatthew, the Johnnic wedding, and like... three different John/Nic/Sharky smut ideas.
Favorite fic you read this year/ A fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read : The entire series of @amistrio‘s Let the Redeemed of the Father Tell Their Story. I will never shut up about this series, ever, because I love it so much. It’s basically New Divide’s soulmate because it’s the same concept, but gay and also with far superior writing, no, I don’t take criticism, don’t boo me, I’m right. And then comes the No Cult AU for them,   all these blessings shall come upon you (and overtake you). Then comes @chyrstis’  But if we go, we go together John/Hana/Sharky perfection, because solidarity. Hana’s perfect, and the other stuff with Hana in it is just as perfect.
Number of favorites/bookmarks you made this year: See last again. I really don’t use the bookmark feature for anything.
Favorite fanfic author of the year: (deep breath) @amistrio @chyrstis @seedlingsinner @seedsplease @geronimo-11 @josephseeds-rosary @jackalopestride @teamhawkeye @foofygoldfish I love you all and your work dearly and I would literally die without both.

Yugioh Theory: Mai’s Dark-Side
Tumblr media
Okay, so hear me out. Might sound stupid, but I have a theory that Yami Marik wasn't completely destroyed by Marik upon his surrender to the Pharaoh at the end of Battle City.  In fact, it might be possible for Yami Marik to be partially responsible for Mai's turn towards the Dark-side during the Doma Arc; in more than a PTSD Nightmare fuel sense.
(Longer version after the break)
So, as stated above, the theory revolves around Mai's personality change in comparison to where she was when she drove off into the sunset at the end of Battle City, and when she comes roaring in as a bad-ass biker babe only 7 episodes later at the start of the Doma Arc.
Mai's motivations as to why she is now a rival of Yugi & co., and has given into the power of the Orichalcos and turned to the dark side, seems a little baffling.   Mai is said to want power and become a stronger duelist, but is also suffering from post-traumatic stress and possibly other psychological disorders (Anxiety, etc.) by the mental torture she had to endure in the penalty game imposed on her due to her loss to Yami Marik, in the Battle City Semi-Finals.  She thinks she's abandoned by her friends, who no longer care.
To quote her exactly on her motivations: "You've never been an outsider like me, All alone. Duel Monsters is all I have, and after the battle city tournament I set out to become the best. I dueled against chump after chump to improve my dueling skills. I needed to make a name for myself.  Even though I won match after match, I didn't feel any stronger as a duelist. In fact, I felt worse, and I certainly wasn't making a name for myself. Not long after that the nightmares began [....] Every night it was the same dream. I was weak, and no one was there to help me! I was at the end of my rope, scared, lonely, pathetic, and my so called friends were no where to be found. "
Well, yeah it's understandable she's fed up with not being considered being in the same league of Duelist or as well recognized as Kaiba, Yugi, and even Joey.  It's also understandable she's still traumatized from the events of Battle City, to the point she's convinced herself that she doesn't belong with them, and they don't care about her.
After all; part of the Shadow Game she played in involved her friends being erased from her mind, and her penalty game involved showing her an illusion of her friends being happier and better off without her, completely forgetting about her.
Mai's final scene in Season 3 she  exchanges farewells with Joey. She appears to acknowledge the fact that Joey actually does care about her and consider her a friend; and she tells him that the feeling is mutual and she considers them to be friends as well.  It's a sweet scene and feels more like a send off to Mai, and the conclusion of her character arc.
Tumblr media
That's because in the Manga, Mai's character arc ended with the Conclusion of the Battle City Arc.  She is never seen again throughout the rest of the Manga. But of course, that's not the case in the Anime; as she was brought back in season 4 (which was not adapted from an arc in the Manga--as the arc bridging the gap in between the Duelist volumes, and the Millennium World Volumes of the Manga was the 5 volume series Yu-Gi-Oh R, which people tend to forget as being a thing. Though I can see why  Yu-Gi-Oh R, was never adapted into Anime; but that's for  a future discussion.)
Tumblr media
Mai's return as a character, and an antagonist seemed mostly for character motivation for Joey as a secondary protagonist character; giving him more of a mission and reason to be there than just as moral support for Yugi and the Pharaoh. His purpose in this battle against evil, aside from the standard "I promised Yugi I'd help him face whatever evil there was"; becomes more of a rescue mission, repeating a lot of the same steps from the Battle City Finals: showing Mai that she has friends who care about her.  Though in the process Mai's motivations for being against them feel more like the writers forgot, or rather, undid, all the development in the past three seasons. But also adding the "inadequacy as a Duelist" subplot--which doesn't get focused on quite as much as the "friendship" thing, or this weird "Love-triangle" subplot between her, Valon, and Joey.
Even when Mai defeats Joey, and the Seal of Orichalcos takes his soul, freeing Mai from it's influence as she sees Joey cares about her enough to risk his own soul. She sees that what she had convinced herself of was wrong:
"I was angry and confused and I blamed all my loneliness on you. So I tried to get rid of you. How could I be so selfish? You're the only one who ever cared about me.  You're the closest friend I ever had and how did I repay you? By leaving you for a mad man who promised me power."
That's all fine and good, except now this make time number two that Mai has repeated this arc. Blaming Joey for her loneliness, and her problems, and why her victories seemed to be meaningless and empty.  Literally they have the same exchange as the end of Season 3, just done slightly different (with Joey being unconscious). Mai acknowledging Joey's friendship and how much he cares about her and what happens to her, that he was willing to lose everything just to save her.
"Okay, but now....aren't we supposed to be talking about Yami Marik being partially responsible for this relapse and influencing Mai's dark personality, under the power of the Orichalcos? You've yet to actually explain where he fits in to this. All you've done is sort of highlight the baffling writing in Season 4 in regards to Mai."
I'm getting to that. Just needed to establish that we're given the reasons why Mai joined with Dartz's organization. She felt weak and that her friends had abandoned her. She was desperate and miserable. But when Mai left at the end of season 3, she didn't seem like what she was now coming to understand and see would be something she would forget about anytime soon.  I'm not sure if it's ever stated how much time passes between Battle City and the events of the Doma Arc, but it's seems like enough for Mai to win a number of tournaments; and have a number of reoccurring nightmares, to be at that point where she's desperate  and feeling hopeless right before she encounter Valon, and begin working for Dartz.
So, the main theory; Yami Marik is responsible for Mai's turn to darkness in more than just the memory of their duel and his torturing of her being the source of her PTSD.  He may actually be present in Mai's mind and is helping influence all these things. Even if she, and no one else might know.
But we're going to set Mai aside for right now to talk about Yami Marik for a bit, but don't worry these two paths are gonna converge, but I'm sure before I even get to that point. You'll see exactly where Yami Marik fits in to Mai's darkness and backwards progression. If you haven't already and are screaming at me right now to make the point.
We know from what we've seen, Yami Marik was created after Marik's initiation as Tomb Keeper, from Marik's hatred, anger, sadness, among other negative emotions. He's been shown to influence Marik's personality, so it isn't too much of a stretch to say that plenty of Marik's motives and actions as an antagonist were influenced by Yami Marik as a play to gain more power, to eventually become strong enough to possibly over come the suppression which the ritual Odion performed on his face as a sign of solidarity to his little brother, without having to have Odion fall unconscious.
Tumblr media
Yami Marik gains power and a greater influence on Marik, through Marik's own actions and emotions and through the pain he inflicts on others; like a vampiric parasite he feeds off of misery, darkness, desperation, hopelessness and evil and negative energies. They sustain him enough to remain present in Marik.    He messes with Marik's mind and emotions to keep him miserable and fueling his hatred, just as Marik screwed with the mind and emotions of others through the Millennium Rod's Power.
The idea to use the Millennium Rod's power in this way on others probably came from Yami Marik himself. His influence over Marik has grown in the past few years since the death of Mr. Ishtar. It's become strong enough now that Marik's personality has changed and become this revenge driven, scheming evil master-mind.   Of course this greater influence is from the benefit of the power of the Millennium Rod and the shadow-magic within it. He feeds off of the power of the Shadow Realm and the suffering of his victims (including the Rare Hunters he controls, as many of the Rare hunters he's possessed, Like Arcana, Lumis, and the Exodia Rare Hunter, have all been shown to be fearful of him appearing in their mind and taking control of them, when they've failed him.)
(The fact that Yami Marik feeds off of the Shadow-Realm and the Millennium Rod's power can be evidenced through just the change in his appearance among the episodes.  He becomes more deranged, and his face becomes all sorts of distorted and those muscles.  I mean just....Damn.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Yami Marik feeding off the darkness of the Shadow Realm and the torture of his victims; also can be evidenced through a cut scene cut from the 4Kids dub, where after his duel with Joey, in which he narrowly escaped defeat, he is shown momentarily becoming ill, and nearly vomiting, making it almost seem as if the energy he received from the Shadow's in that duel was tainted in some way.)
Tumblr media
Okay, so let's talk about the Millennium Rod and it's power at this point. Among the abilities of the Millennium Rod, such as mind-control, and mental mental manipulation, the ability to leave a portion of the owner's mind in the people that he has controlled. This ability was used in a couple instances, such as allowing Marik to appear in Bakura's mind to tell him to enter the Battle City Finals, and to appear to seek Bakura's assistance when Yami Marik took over, and of course using this ability with Tea.
Tumblr media
At only one point in the Duels after Yami Marik awakens do we ever see him use the ability to enter into someone's mind. That is right after Mai's loses the Shadow Game against him.  He appears to her in her mind, to trap her there inside an hour glass, that once the sand ran out would completely erase everything of her memories.  While there he created the illusion to make Mai think her friends were happier without her and that no one was coming to save her.
It's possible that when this happened Yami-Marik left a piece of his mind inside of Mai; in order to appear in her mind, he would have had to do this.  Did he intentionally mean to leave this piece of his mind inside of Mai? Maybe. Though the theory still works if it was not intentional;  I believe this was intentional.
Why? Because...."I always have a plan."
These are the exact words Marik himself uses shortly after he has his Rare Hunters capture Joey and Tea and they become Marik's mind slaves to lure Yugi into a duel to the death against Joey at the harbor.  Marik has been shown many times to have several plans running in action at the same time, (like a good villain). Any time one plan falls through, the next can be put into motion.
Having gained control of Marik's body, no longer being suppressed by Odion, now that he's been struck down; Yami Marik has to try to keep his control. Prior to his awakening (the first time and the recent time); Marik has shown active resistance to his Dark-Sides control, even shortly after losing control, appearing to call out for Ishizu's help, only to be locked up and banished.
Given that Yami-Marik actively goes after Odion multiple times in order to kill him,in order to eliminate the threat of Marik regaining control were Odion to regain conciousness like the last time he was in control; he would have to have plans in play in the probable chance he may be defeated.  Even if those plans have to be improvised to a degree; using the only available people around. (It's the finals, there aren't that many people around, you're on an aircraft/island/etc.) He needed a back-up plan incase this all went south, and he was banished.  So what are your options at the time?  They're pretty damn limited.
Tumblr media
You're not going to go after the non-duelists on board. I mean, they probably don't have cards, or any real means of accomplishing the mission to defeat the Pharaoh, or anything else really. They're worthless to you.
Tumblr media
Like fuck you're going to try possessing Odion, he's the reason you were supressed in the first place, You'd rather prefer his dead ass chopped up into peices and tossed out into the ocean for the sharks. Because like hell you're taking that risk of bringing him back to conciousness and getting yourself destroyed.  I mean, Fuck. That. Shit.
Tumblr media
Well, there's Joey---but..he's shown resistance to the Millennium Rod's Mind control before and even managed to break himself free. You can't break his will that easy, and his mind may actively fight you. So, that's a no go.
Tumblr media
Kaiba? Kaiba has connections to the ancient past, so the Millennium Rod's power isn't going to work, and besides--there's a chance the Millennium Rod might recognize this connection between Kaiba and it's former wielder and Yami Marik could lose control of the Millennium Rod. You want to keep that. Besides, the only thing you want from Kaiba is his Obelisk the Tormentor. (Wait---that came out wrong.)
Tumblr media
As well, You're not going to hide out in this eighth duelist because, they haven't shown their face yet. Who cares who they are. Maybe when and If you have to face them, you can use them. Of course by the time you do find out who they are (surprise of surprises: it's your sister.) you'll have to eliminate them as an option, not only does she have a Millennium item (which she gives up) She also has a connection to the ancient past through  the family lineage, so she's probably protected from most of the powers of the Millennium Rod.  I predict the future says no on this one.
Tumblr media
Bakura's an option--but there's already another dark spirit working there within the Millennium Ring, who's probably already pissed off at you after your weaker half almost got his host obliterated by Silfer in Match 1 of the finals---You need someone who's not going to pose a threat to you. Someone who can't use a millennium item to banish you  before you even have a chance. Forget it. Leave the Cream-puff alone; he's got his own problems. Besides, like with Tea, your weaker half might be hiding out there. You'll have to eliminate him and any other pieces of him that might be lurking around anyhow.
So, who's left?  Ah, well, isn't it your  luck the Blue-Eyes Bingo Machine  just puked out your number and that of your first opponent, and what a joy; she's already brimming with feelings of loneliness, isolation, and anger, masked behind the tough-girl lone-wolf Duelist façade.  Perfect. You can use this to your advantage for the perfect shadow game and even set her up as your backup plan.
She's got all the negative emotions you can feed off of, to sustain yourself upon should it eventually come down to it. Sure, you're back to square one if your weak half some how gets back in control, and if Odion does regain consciousness, giving your weak half the confidence enough to destroy you and banish you forever from his body. But, hey; if you do enough damage, you can mentally scar her enough to get some sort of advantage should you have to actually rely on your backup plan.
To make things even better;  when she loses this game, you can completely destroy her mind. Torture her, and put a timer on her penalty game. Anyone who wants to save her better do it in enough time.  Even if this whole "destroy the Pharaoh" plan doesn't work out the way it should; if they don't take you down in enough time; there won't be any Mai left to bring back, and no Mai left to be able to resist your power. You basically get a back-up body to inhabit, without nearly as much of the work you had to put in to Marik. (And even better, Odion won't be able to stop you, that whole ritual thing that been suppressing you probably only works with Marik...and you won't be him. so yay.)
Tumblr media
Anyhow, It seems like a perfect set up for a back up plan. However as I mentioned before, the theory still works on the idea it was all accidental and Yami Marik didn't know he was leaving a piece of his mind behind in order to enter into Mai's mind. He only finds out about this after appearing in Mai's mind sometime after the end of Battle City and her departure from the group.
Either way, sometime after Yami Marik is defeated; he appears inside of Mai's mind.  Mai's acknowledgement of her friendship with the others has occurred and now she's off on her own with that confidence in her heart.   For now.  Yami-Marik is back at square one with his power, back like when Marik was still a kid.  Well, that is enough.  You can still mess with her mind. Bring up those old scars, and traumas.  Put the power of suggestion in her head.
All it takes is that first tournament win. Yami Marik takes the joy from it, just by the power of suggestion. Make her believe it's an empty win, and it makes her no stronger than before. She might have won, but what's the point? No friends to share the victory with?  It makes her miserable, thinking something is wrong with her. Her misery makes him stronger. Repeatedly again and again, sucking the joy from the only thing Mai has in her life at the moment. It drives her mad, and she can't understand what the reason for it is.
Tumblr media
He suggests to her it's because she'll never be a respected Duelist. Yugi, Kaiba, Joey, those are the real stars; those are the real duelists, and she's fooling herself if she thinks anyone will consider her in their league.  Of course the words she's been hearing from her competition, and others only reinforces this idea.
Then the nightmares start. Now he can confront her, he can bring back those memories of her loss in Battle City. He can torture her more. Really drive home the fact she's alone, she's weak, and make her believe no one cares and she'd have been better of in the shadows, forgotten about.  It makes her desperate. She slips into depressive state, and really starts to believe that her friends don't care.  Now she's absolutely miserable, and Yami-Marik can sustain himself for quite some time.  She feels hopeless, and it's difficult to find the positive when there seems to be nothing left to make her happy, or have a sense of worth and purpose in the world. She can't talk to anyone about it, because her "Mind" has convinced her they don't care, because they haven't tried to contact her, and she would be bothering them if she tried to contact them. She's convinced they only tolerate her, but don't actually think she's a friend. Despite all evidences to the contrary.
He's basically undid every piece of character development Mai's ever had. Then something Yami Marik didn't count on happens. Valon crosses paths with Mai. He's defeats her in a duel, the first person to do that since Yami Marik himself.  Valon could be trouble with his promises of giving her friendship and a sense of belonging.  However, there is something else  Valon promises to show Mai if she goes with him; true power. Valon says Dartz, the man he's working for has power, and that Power can belong to Mai.
Power? Now that has Yami Marik's interest. He's greedy. Sustaining himself off of Mai's misery is fine, but what he really needs is a boost of power. Something which might allow him to take a greater influence on Mai, maybe actually take control of her.  Mai's desperate anyways, and convinced she's weak.  Here Valon is offering friendship and power to over-come the nightmares and become a stronger person.   The idea sounds appealing to her, so she goes.
Tumblr media
The minute she is given the power of the Orichalcos through Dartz, Yami Marik takes greater control, now boosted by the dark power of the Orichalcos. It's not the power of the Millennium items but it's a dark power that will do for now, until he can get his hands on a Millennium item.  It turns into an even better luck this power comes with a mission. Destroy Pegasus and Destroy the Pharaoh. (The Pharaoh is who Yami Marik is really after; destroying Pegasus is an added bonus.) Even better, if it's the Pharaoh we're after then Wheeler isn't going to be too far behind.
Joey must be eliminated.  Yami Marik has already started to convince Mai a lot of her problems stem from Joey in some form or another. He's a cause for her loneliness.  If Mai is ever going to be respected as a Duelist, and ever going to be happy ever again; she needs to get rid of him.
Though, the truth is a little more off than this. Joey is a threat. He's already shown amazing friendship, courage, and dedication to his friends and to Mai, risking his own life. Mai knows this and has come to accept this, and there is a piece of her still deep under all the shadows in her heart which remembers this. Basically, Joey had become to Mai what Odion was to Marik. A source of encouragement and a pillar of strength.  A threat to the control Yami Marik has over his host.  He must be eliminated.
I say Yami Marik has partial control over Mai, in the fact that frequently during her duel with Joey whenever she is explaining why she took a turn towards evil, she refers to herself in a third person;
"[....] the Mai you knew is gone, I traded in her soul for power. The old Mai was too lonely and pathetic, the girl was just holding me back. So I did what I had to. I sent her packing. Now my weak side is gone for good."
Oddly enough Mai, who is supposed to be the same person and hasn't spawned a "Dark" personality in spite of the Orichalcos, rather just changed personality to become tougher, refers to herself as her "weak-side", now---who else has called their other half their "weaker self?" Oh, right, Yami Marik.
On a side note: A lot Yami-Marik's dialouge in Mai's nightmares  mirror words which Yami Marik said when Marik (in Tea's Body) confronted him ontop of the Duel-Tower before the finals of the tournament took place. In the dream Yami Marik says to Mai:
"I told you you're weak, you don't belong in this world. So I'm banishing you into the shadows where you'll spend all eternity."
To Marik he said:
"I'm afraid you're too weak now. Marik, I'm the real you, and you're nothing but a small peice of my memory [...] Sorry Marik, but it's time for me to banish what's left of you into the Shadows where you belong."
He speaks to Mai in her Nightmare as if she is now the personality he has to contend with for control.
Anyhow. So now Mai is being controlled by Yami Marik through the power of the Orichalcos. He's only able to take control through the Orichalcos, but still has influences on  her personality outside of it.  So Mai sets out to accomplish the mission Yami Marik had initially started out to do before his defeat.
Tumblr media
"but----wait. We see Yami Marik appear in that valley of the dead area with all the ghosts and shit. Like implying he's dead so what do you make of that?" Well, Weevil is there too and  he's not dead, he just doesn't have his soul anymore. Besides; like 99% of Yami Marik was destroyed, so yeah he's technically dead, even if  a peice of his soul/mind is hiding out inside of Mai.  I mean, they think he's dead too. So, yeah. (Also, the Paradox brothers are there….and we know they’re not dead.)
Tumblr media
Whenever Mai is on her way to stop Valon and Joey from Dueling later in the episode. She does have a breif moment where she has a flare-up in the orichalcos controlling her, but it appears only after there is a breif image of Yami Marik appearing in her mind, as she declares she isn't going to go back to that place.
However, Mai's good personality starts to fight back as she watches Valon and Joey fight, realizing both of them care for her as a friend. Something in her heart sparks at the memory of seeing Joey nearly bite the dust in the duel, and she starts to fight back against Yami Marik. She starts to fight for control, because now she sees what she was led to believe was wrong.
The moment Mai is unable to attack Joey in her duel against him, in order to win; Mai remembers everything between her and Joey. How he and his friends made her feel welcome and understand friendship for the first time on Duelist Kingdom. But most importantly, she remembers the unspoken words between them as she left at the end of Battle City, and Joey's message finally gets through to her. "I'll always be your friend."  With just that, Mai is able to over come Yami-Marik's influence, and the dark power of the Orichalcos which has also been messing with her mind.  With Yami-Marik having been feeding off the power of the Orichalcos, when the stone shatters, the last of his mind is gone. He is dead. She is free of her darkness. (Maybe? At the very least she cut off his power boost.)
Now Mai has realized the damage "she" has done; the fact Joey has lost his soul because of her, and she let herself be controlled by giving in to Dartz power. She has to make things right. She has to make it up to joey and Valon for all the shit they've had to go through because of her. It's time to try to face Dartz. .....and promptly get your soul stolen by Raphael.  (Dissappointing, and it all happens off screen too. It would have been cool to see Mai getting to use Hermos in a duel against Raphael. but oh well.)
The whole season ends and now Mai finds herself free of her darkness, and the influence of her past. Maybe some day, she can truely forgive herself for the horrible things she allowed to happen to her friends, but until that time comes she knows she has the support of her friends and they'll never forget about her and she'll never forget about them.
Tumblr media
I know it's not a perfect theory, but It's a fun theory to play with none the less, and might make for an interesting fanfiction.  Seriously, Go back and watch the Orichalcos arc and any of Mai's appearances in the season with the idea of Yami-Marik being present/controlling her  (A couple of Joey's lines and Mai's reactions become interesting, and the duel between Joey and Mai becomes a bit of an interesting paralell with Joey and Yami-Marik's duel. Joey being drained of energy and getting weaker as the duel wears on, and the duel being won due to the fact of Joey collapsing from exhaustion. Even Joey's reasons for dueling are the same. To save Mai.) --
Anyhow, I hope that you guys found this theory as interesting of an idea as I have and might want to do something with it. (I know I will probably be doing a few things with it...and have already started on a couple of projects involving the idea.)  I thought it'd be interesting to share, even if I let myself get a little carried away with the idea and explaining it.
Want to go back and watch Yugioh Duel Monsters from Episode one?  Buy the DVDs. Don't have that much money? The entire series is available to watch for free on Yugioh.com. (It's the 4Kids English Dub, for the original Duel Monsters so if you aren't a fan of it, I don't recommend you heading over there and watching it, but let the rest of us enjoy it okay?).
-- Until next time!

Prabal Gurung: Anti-Asian sentiment runs deeper than you think Written by Prabal GurungNew York Prabal Gurung is a Nepali American fashion designer based in New York. All opinions expressed in this article belong to the author. The feature is part of CNN Style’s new series Hyphenated, which explores the complex issue of identity among minorities in the United States. My 75-year-old Nepali mother, who lives in New York, goes for a walk every morning and every evening. I send her out in disguise: I bought her a blonde wig, and I tell her to wear it under a hat, glasses and mask. “Maybe then, they’ll leave her alone,” I think. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s my survival instinct kicking in. “I understand your concern and worry,” my mami, as I like to call her, told me the other day. “But I would rather get a walking stick or a cane, just in case something happens. I can fight back,” she assured me, adjusting her wig and hat. That’s just how she is: resilient, unafraid and a picture of grace under pressure. I admire her strength but continue to worry for her safety. I check in constantly so I know where she is at any given time. This is what it’s come to. A fear so constant that it’s crippling. “By using terms like “China Virus” and “Kung Flu,” Trump gave the coronavirus a face, an Asian face, and for that, we have all suffered.” Prabal Gurung Here’s where we’re at: A torrent of anti-Asian hate crimes have been committed, including the brutal assault of elderly Asian men and women in broad daylight. Among them is 65-year-old Vilma Kari, who just last week in New York, was told “F**k you, you don’t belong here, you Asian,” according to the criminal complaint, before being pushed to the ground and kicked repeatedly by her attacker. The shootings at three Atlanta-area spas have left six Asian women dead. Nearly 3,800 hate incidents have so far been reported to Stop AAPI Hate over the course of a year. It feels as if there’s an open season for violence against Asians. By using terms like “China Virus” and “Kung Flu,” former US President Donald Trump gave the coronavirus a face, an Asian face, and for that, we have all suffered. While his damaging rhetoric has no doubt fueled these hate crimes, their roots are buried deep in underlying racist currents that have long impacted our communities in the United States. They can be found in every industry. For instance, when it comes to my world — fashion — the consequences of systemic racism play out daily. And not just in the form of microaggressions. As someone who has a platform, who has clout, I have always believed it’s my responsibility to speak out. ‘Who gets to be American?’ Fashion at its purest, simplest form, is a reflection of the world we live in. It doesn’t operate in a vacuum but instead influences — and is influenced by — music, culture, social movements and politics. Whatever your views are, everyone engages with fashion at some level. For most of us, it’s one of the first decisions we make each morning. I believe in its greater purpose — as a tool of empowerment. But as much as fashion projects its power outwards, behind the scenes, it can be a very different story. I was born in Singapore, grew up in Nepal and lived in India, and in these countries, you’re faced with issues such as colorism, caste discrimination and hierarchal social structures. When I started my brand 12 years ago, I wanted it to show marginalized people that they are seen, and that they matter. But until recently, it’s been an uphill battle. “I was advised to limit the diversity of my runways because clients wouldn’t be as receptive to non White models: “‘two Black women, two Asian women — OK that’s enough.'” Prabal Gurung The question of who dictates style, or what we consider tasteful or chic, is still viewed through a colonial lens, shaped by centuries-old Eurocentric ideals. Unrealistic beauty standards are often elitist, discriminatory and ultimately, constructed to maintain a proximity to Whiteness that allows those in power to feel important and secure. Decision-makers are, predominantly, White. This plays out in a number of ways. Fashion inspired by minority cultures, or rooted in the heritage of a minority designer’s heritage, may be tokenized as “exotic” or “ethnic,” or disparaged in hushed tones as “tacky and garish.” Tone-deaf campaigns and racist garments are often created because there are no people of color in the room that feel empowered enough to stop them from going ahead. Early in my own career, I was advised to limit the diversity of my runways because clients wouldn’t be as receptive to non White models: “two Black women, two Asian women — OK that’s enough.” I also recall wanting to open a collection with Korean model Ji Hye Park, and it sparked such a big discussion with the brand’s other stakeholders. “Should we? Shouldn’t we? Is it cool? Does it make sense? Is this idea… luxury?” These kinds of conversations were initially shocking. But I became used to witnessing microaggressions or blatant discrimination against the few Asian people who, like myself and other people of color, were able to break into this industry. Yes, fashion continues to make strides in the right direction, but we still have miles to go. Today, I still see Black, Latinx, Asian, Native American and LGBTQ peers being tokenized by the industry, called upon to perform inclusivity. Models walk the Prabal Gurung runway during New York Fashion Week on September 8, 2019. Credit: Mike Coppola/Getty Images I’ve often been challenged about my “American-ness.” During a planning meeting for my label’s 10th anniversary collection in 2018, an investor asked me to express what I felt my brand stood for. I began explaining that American style had always been seen through a White lens. But as a first-generation Asian immigrant, as a minority, as a queer person of color, I wanted to redefine the country’s style because our experiences have been underrepresented. The way I look at this country is an amalgamation of different cultures, races, ethnicities, religions and sizes, and that should be celebrated. He, in turn, asked, “Well you don’t look American, how can you define American style?” It was clear to me what he meant by his statement: I wasn’t White, therefore I had no authority to shape the American ideal. And this despite being an American citizen who owns a business in this country — one who employs Americans and immigrants, embraces a “Made in America” production ethos and pays taxes. For some people it’s just never enough. I ended up turning that collection into a celebration of American identity and belonging, sending a diverse cast of models down the runway in denim, white short-sleeved shirts, rose prints and, during the finale, sashes bearing the question: “Who gets to be American?” While the show had a lot of positive feedback, and started a healthy dialogue about identity, there were some who felt it was too on the nose. This is how privilege works. It was a luxury to be in the position to say that it was “too much” or “too direct.” However, when it comes to fighting for basic human rights, it is never too much. It is never too loud. We need to tell our stories It’s clear that the road to a more equitable fashion industry is long. Until brands genuinely diversify their decision-makers and boards — not just with token hires, but with people actually willing to strike up difficult, uncomfortable conversations that challenge biases — it won’t change. And, let’s be honest, brands’ efforts to embrace Asian culture have been motivated by the spending power of countries like China, India and South Korea, not some moral awakening. But, cynicism aside, just like conversations brought about by the Black Lives Matter protests, the Stop Asian Hate movement is inviting renewed scrutiny of fashion’s role in perpetuating racism and discrimination — from runways and collections to workplace culture. “We need to be in every corner and exist in every space.” Prabal Gurung Asian Americans in the industry should recognize that we have an important role to play. As a whole, more than 60% of the global population lives in Asia, according to the United Nations. Asians are the world’s biggest consumers of clothing, and we manufacture most of it too. Yet, told that our voices don’t matter, we’ve mostly played supporting roles, quietly and submissively catering to the needs of businesses. It’s not enough. It’s time to speak out and step up. Take this time to donate, build your skills by participating in harassment intervention training, and support existing social justice organizations and initiatives such as Stop AAPI Hate and Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC). Familiarize yourself with non-profit organizations like Gold House and Define American who are shaping culture, forming solidarity through intersectionality and creating impactful, sustainable long-term solutions for challenges facing our communities. The solidarity protests over the past few weeks have been extremely heartwarming. I have demonstrated alongside my peers, activists, community leaders and regular New Yorkers, telling our truths and, between other minorities and marginalized groups, finding support and common ground. The “End Violence Against Asians” march in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City on February 20, 2021. Credit: Robert Hamada We need to be in every corner and exist in every space. The more that our stories are told, the more that our faces, our experiences and our humanity will not only be normalized but embraced. We must claim our rightful seats at the table, and then use those positions to empower other marginalized groups. Visibility is key, and we must craft our own narratives and tell our own stories. Here’s where we’re at:
A torrent of anti-Asian hate crimes have been committed, including the brutal assault of elderly Asian men and women in broad daylight. Among them is 65-year-old Vilma Kari, who just last week in New York, was told “F**k you, you don’t belong here, you Asian,” according to the criminal complaint, before being pushed to the ground and kicked repeatedly by her attacker.
‘Who gets to be American?’
Fashion at its purest, simplest form, is a reflection of the world we live in. It doesn’t operate in a vacuum but instead influences — and is influenced by — music, culture, social movements and politics.
Whatever your views are, everyone engages with fashion at some level. For most of us, it’s one of the first decisions we make each morning. When I started my brand 12 years ago, I wanted it to show marginalized people that they are seen, and that they matter. But until recently, it’s been an uphill battle.
“I was advised to limit the diversity of my runways because clients wouldn’t be as receptive to non White models: “‘two Black women, two Asian women — OK that’s enough.'”
Prabal Gurung
The question of who dictates style, or what we consider tasteful or chic, is still viewed through a colonial lens, shaped by centuries-old Eurocentric ideals.
Early in my own career, I was advised to limit the diversity of my runways because clients wouldn’t be as receptive to non White models: “two Black women, two Asian women — OK that’s enough.”
I also recall wanting to open a collection with Korean model Ji Hye Park, and it sparked such a big discussion with the brand’s other stakeholders. “Should we? Shouldn’t we? Is it cool? Does it make sense? Is this idea… luxury?”
These kinds of conversations were initially shocking.

I’ve often been challenged about my “American-ness.” During a planning meeting for my label’s 10th anniversary collection in 2018, an investor asked me to express what I felt my brand stood for.
He, in turn, asked, “Well you don’t look American, how can you define American style?”
It was clear to me what he meant by his statement: I wasn’t White, therefore I had no authority to shape the American ideal. And this despite being an American citizen who owns a business in this country — one who employs Americans and immigrants, embraces a “Made in America” production ethos and pays taxes. For some people it’s just never enough.
I ended up turning that collection into a celebration of American identity and belonging, sending a diverse cast of models down the runway in denim, white short-sleeved shirts, rose prints and, during the finale, sashes bearing the question: “Who gets to be American?”
While the show had a lot of positive feedback, and started a healthy dialogue about identity, there were some who felt it was too on the nose. This is how privilege works. It was a luxury to be in the position to say that it was “too much” or “too direct.” However, when it comes to fighting for basic human rights, it is never too much. It is never too loud.
We need to tell our stories
It’s clear that the road to a more equitable fashion industry is long.
“We need to be in every corner and exist in every space.”
Prabal Gurung
Asian Americans in the industry should recognize that we have an important role to play.

We need to be in every corner and exist in every space. The more that our stories are told, the more that our faces, our experiences and our humanity will not only be normalized but embraced.
We must claim our rightful seats at the table, and then use those positions to empower other marginalized groups. Visibility is key, and we must craft our own narratives and tell our own stories.

Some of my thoughts on the coronavirus epidemic
Part 1: Going home
It was at the noon of Christmas day in 2019. When most western families reunited for the occasion, I sat in the sun-lit apartment in Amsterdam by myself, calling my family in Shanghai 7 hours ahead of Europe. The big family was gathering as a routine as well, althouth they were not celebrating anything particular. Feast on the table, glasses clinking, the simple happiness and warmth was transversed to me from thousands of miles away. Today in retrospect, I realize they were simply appreciating the essence in life: health, freedom and love.
During the phone call, I told them I was going to leave my current job. It was not an easy decision, just like most ones in everybody’s life. After a year long struggle of not getting a promising career prospect, which weighed heavily on my mental fitness, I’ve finally decided to take back control and move on. When my uncles learnt that I would have a two-week gap before my new job starts, they both suggested me return to spend the Spring Festival with the family in Shanghai. The truth is although I visited them almost every year, it has been 7 years since last time I was with them during the biggest festival season in China, and that particular last time was rather for my Granpa’s passing…
With almost no hesitation, I wrapped up all my work and hopped on the first flight to Shanghai in the mid January 2020. As of that particular moment, I was complete oblivious of the virus outbreak.
Winter in Shanghai could be cruel; the rain went on drizzling for days, one will quiver for the winter chill. Upon my arrival, mood at home was light. My uncle and cousin-in-law came to pick me up from the airport. All along the way, we were cracking jokes about Uncle C’s rookie driving skills, since he obtained his driver’s license only a month ago at the age of 60. Back at home, after examining my luggage with her “quasi-military precision", mother couldn’t stop nagging me of being underdressed for the weather. But for me, from the bottom of my heart, I felt completely care-free and warm, because I was home.
Part 2: the voluntary siege
Now less than one month later, we all know this festive mood didn’t last long. Merely three days after my arrival, the news of human cross-infection of the novel corona virus was confirmed by the Chinese Central Government. The epicenter was allegedly located in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province with a population of more than 10 million. From then on, the episode began to unveil in an unimaginable speed...
January 23th, the rain kept on for a long while. It was one day before the New Year’s Eve, this was supposed to be the day when parents sweep-clean the entire house and grandma prepares for the family dinner with her secrete recipes. however, eventually it became the day when the city of Wuhan was locked down due to the severe outbreak of the novel coronavirus. 10 o’clock in the morning, all the transporation en-route to this mega-size city in the center of China was temporarily closed. As I learnt this news from the media, we have already be strongly urged, by both the central and local government, to always take protective hygienic measures, avoid populous areas and refrain ourselves from unnecessary gatherings. Official precaustions on domestic and international travels were issued and aired frequently to the general public in the meantime.
Overnight, face masks and household medical alcohol were nearly sold out in every corner of the city and online; people in the communities were deeply shrouded by the dire situation in Wuhan and Hubei Province. In my immediate circle, everyone felt for the fear that people were suffering from over there; we prayed for the sick, for the health and for everyone who was innocently stranded in this deadlock. We knew that we had to go through this together.
You may have heard from the media that people’s lives in the lockdown have all of a sudden taken on a feeling of imprisonment and boredom. What you may have not heard is what the rest of us in China were dealing with at the same time. In Shanghai, most families have acted on the advices of the epidemiologists to do voluntary quanrantine at home, sparing themselves from any unnecessary trips. The only people who were still busy on the road were the delivery crews, the civil servants and the staff of epidemic prevention. In Shanghai, China’s grand cosmopolis, I couldn’t recall when was the last time that its streets have been so vacated. As for my family, we canceled all our family dinners. Suddenly, I found myself confined to the 20m2 space in the house where I was born and grew up. The world has become two dimensional again, or even for many, life has hit its PAUSE button, we no longer had the next job or the next party to rush into; daily routine has become the binary interaction with our beloved parents, kids and pets.
Part 3: the silver lining
Did I feel confined? yes, to a great extent. This was one of those moments that every human being will realize how important our freedom is. Did I feel forced? No, I can speak for most of the people that I know of, we were not imprisoned, we did the quarantine voluntarily because we understood how critical it is for us to do so, in order to stop the bleeding, to not exert more burdens to the already sparse social resources. At this moment, the country, as well as her people have made a tough choice, just like most choices in life, inconvenient yet necessary.
Am I bored? Maybe for a short while. Soon after, I realize if this outbreak had any silver linings, it brought us closer to who we really are. When we no longer have a busy life to escape to, we got enough time to rest, to read a book, to contemplate for nothing; we had to be creative to pamper our elderlies and our kids, keeping them engaged all the time. In a way, these were truly luxurious moments for us to live for. For me, the only human contact that I was left with was my parents. I needed to learn to get along with them 24 hours non-stop again, a thing that I was estranged to do since I left home for college at the age of 18. Two days in the quarantine, after we exhausted all the topics that could cause squabbles between my mother and I, she took out a rusty chessboard. We used to play the chess often; and that was the sole entertainment we had before I got my first computer. After we ceased to play it for so many years, this artifact sent me down the memory lane. As we picked it up again, I didn’t play loose to let her win; the game got us laugh at each other and at the sheer contentment that was once much more easily earned.
Life has returned to its simple state that we could remember. In a good way, it turned to be a nostalgia for all of us.
Part 4: the solidarity
What you also may have not heard from the media is many people, despite being quarantined, were collectively searching for medical supplies all over the world via the internet. Different kinds of private partnerships and initiatives were formed in the virtual space. Chinese who live overseas as well as many foreign friends looked everywhere to contact local manufacturers for the supply of protecive apparels for medical use and tried their best to bring the shipments back home, given priority to the hospitals and medical facilities in Wuhan and Hubei. Hundreds of thousands of doctors and medicare stuff from all over the country dropped everthing in hand and responded to the call for medical aids to the city of Wuhan. At the New Year’s eve, a team of 100+ medical professionals boarded on the only flight from Shanghai to Wuhan without knowing their date of return. From the images in the news, I could no longer make out how the individuals look like, because all their bodies were covered by protective apparels. Only the voices of their vows kept resonating within us, as unforgettable as imprinted on our minds. We prayed for their safe return to their own families in the near future.
On New Year’s day, my family collectively decided that I should go back to Amsterdam ahead of schedule, as they were concerned that my reporting to the new job might be impacted if stayed any longer. Two days later, I was on the flight back to the Netherlands. I left with a very mixed feeling. Although it was unfortunate that my first new year visit after 7 years was partially frustrated by the epidemic outbreak, I still felt happy that I went through part of the difficult time with my next of kin. We’ve had some good laughter and quality time together. In Shanghai, things are still oragnized in order, my family is safe and has access to enough supplies. But as I boarded the airplane, my departure was attached to a subtle feeling of me running for life.
Part 5: the fear
As of today, it has been 14 days since my departure from Shanghai. It is the 14th day of my voluntary house quanrantine at home in Amsterdam. It was not until 2 days ago, I was able to sleep through the night without waking up and thinking about my people at home. It is probably the only time that I hope it was because of the age that fighting jetleg becomes more difficult.
Just like my friends who went through the same drill as I did, we lock up ourselves through the 14-day incubation period on our own will, because even with the slightest chance, we are trying to avoid becoming the menace to any society that we are part of.
In the solitude, It is easy for one to lose track on things. Tomorrow I will be breaking free to walk out and see the light shedding on my forehead again. At this very moment, I feel slightly like a hermit, who may need a mild warm up for a human interaction as the day starts the next morning. But my people, my family, they are still fighting with the epidemic, with the conceded sacrifice of their precious freedom. Compared to theirs, my ordeal is not even worth mentioning. That’s the fight they didn’t choose to pick, but were so determined to win; I figure this is no difference to everyone who has his /her own battlefield in this world.
In my quarantine, stories about random derogatory attitudes towards Chinese people in West flying around in social media. In New York subway, a Chinese girl was assaulted because she was wearing a face mask. Wallstreet Journal published an op-ed using the title “China is the Real Sick Man in Asia”. Tracing back one century ago, this was a humiliating term used by Western intruders when they colonized China. A few days ago, A Dutch VJ from national radio Channel 10 made up a limerick on the coronavirus crisis in the airtime, who uttered a strong discrimitary implication against Chinese people, asserting Chinese is more dangerous than the virus.
As good as my intent to respect the freedom of speech, I have zero toleration on discrimination. I couldn’t help but saying a few words about it. Let me start by telling you, despite my agony, I understand the fear that people have in the West.
I have just told you about how most people in China was making their best efforts to mentally and physcially support Wuhan. But of course, there were also negative vibes. When the lockdown of Wuhan was first announced, many people were scared at the sight of someone from Wuhan in their 10-meter radius, like birds startled by the twang of a bow-string. As I learnt that the girl in New York was assaulted and slamped as virus simply because of her race, I had an epiphany: this abyss that Chinese (or even Asian) is encountering in Western countries is identical to that of Wuhan people in the rest of China. Buddhism teaches us using empathy to think in other people’s shoes; but it is by far the hardest thing to practice on, isn’t it? Only as the roles are swapped, we come to fully comprehend what does it mean to people on the other side.
Nobody is made desensitized from the spreading of viruses. Infection across human at this shocking rate, athough non-unprecedented, is frightingly scary. What you and I are feeling is a primal instinct; it is biology that one couldn’t help. Even though most people is capable of rationalize the fact that Chinese people do not equal to coronavirus, the mere fact that the epidemic broke out in China comes attached to a strong connotation of horror.
Looking back, it took human society decades to reduce discrimination against AIDS patients and we are still not quite there yet. I guess most people remember the scenes from the movie Philadelphia. But fears does not stop virus from further spreading; science might have a chance. And fear comes from intransparency; only colllaboration could help to lessen it. What we ought to do is to equip ourselves as well as people around us with the knowledge about the virus, about how to prevent infection; or in an unfortunate event, how to get in-time treatment if someone was infected.
Part 6: the Asians with face mask
Do you know why most of us doing voluntary quarantine at home through the incubation period, although I was fairly sure that I was clear from the infection? Do you know why those people, Chinese or not, landed in the airport wearing face masks? Not because they are virus, but because as responsible as they are, they did not want to run the risk of possibly infecting any other people, whether the other people is Chinese or not.
In front of the coronavirus, there’s no difference in age, gender, and definitely not in race! Now, I am not going as far as saying whoever wearing masks are heroes; quite the opposite, they are simply doing a thing that everybody ought to do. Can you imagine what could happen when the righteousnessis is mutilted? What if those, who have been to the infectious area in the last 14 days, were too scare to wear face masks simply because of the fear for social discrimination? I could tell you nobody wins, except for the virus.
On a different note, I couldn’t stress more, most people who was drawn into this coronavirus episode, they are just John Doe’s in the world; some of them was only making a way home to meet families for their new year celebration, like what people do around Christmas in the West. Many travelers from Wuhan who left the city prior to the outbreak, are now stranded in other cities or even in a foreign country, without knowing how and when they could eventually get home. With the odds not on their side, they became innocent victims who appeared in one place at an inconvenient time. That reminds me of another movie, which also has Tom Hanks star in, “The Terminal”.
Part 7: the voice
At the moment the world has a mixed feeling about how Chinese government is handling the coronavirus crisis, especially after WHO announced its “PHEIC” status. We Chinese too. Most of us was mortified by the initial concealment of the outbreak, which possibly delayed the best moment of containing the epidemic. The entire Chinese social media was mourning for the passing of Doctor Li, who was one of the 8 whistleblowers exposing the situation in Wuhan in the first place. Like the rest of the world, the sporadical expansion of social media has dictated the information explosion in China; unfortunately it does not necessarily improve its environment of check and balance in the social justice. At the outset of the outbreak, the righteous voices were mutilated, whereas at the heat of fighting against the virus, scandals and rumors are flying around, which makes the cost for truth verification a high stake.
The seamless accessibility to information is a double-edge sword. It enables and enhances people’s freedom of speech. But when giving opinion becomes one “share click” away, people is more inclined to do it recklessly. Carl Jung once said: ”Thinking is difficult, that’s why most people judge”. Many of us still need to learn more freedom comes with more responsibilities. Instead of conveniently judging or forwarding the news that you hear, let me invite all of you to think first, If you find something, or anything that doesn’t quite add up, collect and verify the information with as much truth as possible, before you want to share it with a greater audience. I believe that the virus episode will eventually wrap up; it is only a matter of time. At the end of the battle, we could lose many things, but with everything that we could lose, trust and the faith in truth is among the hardest to be restored.
The world is an ever more tightly connected place. Any minor tremor caused by rain drops in one place on earth, may ripple off to create major impact on the othe end of the globe. This is the world that we are living in. When a virus epidemic breaks out in such a scale in one coutry, simply cutting economic ties would not remediate the pain entirely. In spite of my outrage on WSJ’s derogatory title, I still read through the article and tried to digest its opinion impartially. Other than the fact that this world-renowed newspaper ridicules itself by referring Beijing as “a mighty juggernaut”, I found it narrow-minded to see China in this coronavirus crisis as a separate instance. According to some recent forecasts announced by the major high-tech companies in the US, on the impact of the coronavirus crisis, both their existing productions and new product releases are expected to be delayed, as the production were interrupted on the assembly lines in China ever since the outbreak. No matter what countermeasures and alternative supplies these US companies would eventually find, it takes time for the connected marketplaces to adjust to the next equilibrium. It is almost naive for the WSJ article to believe that the crisis occured in China will solely benefits the US.
Part 8: the compassion
You might have heard that the culprit of the virus influx is those who trade and eat wildlife in Wuhan. Although it has not been scientifically proven with 100% accuracy, the experts have suggested with high confidence that the wild animals, which were illegally traded in the food market, were the original carriers of coronavirus, Through these animals,  the virus crossed the species barriers and crawl its way to infect human.
One more time, we human disobey the rule of nature; we human cross the line to exploit the resources that are not meant to be consumed by us. The virus outbreak is the mere consequence of it. Humanity is now paying for price of our own arrogance and ignorance. This is also how most Chinese people is feeling angry about. For that, I want to state one more time, not every Chinese eats or trades wildlives. Although the advocacy on animal rights in China is not as advanced and mature as in Europe, wildlife trade is legally forbidden in China; criminals involved in those illegal trades are bound to be prosecuted. What’s more profounding is that the majority of us also despise those who abuse the animal rights, just like most people in the world.
I have blabbed a lot, because I want to show you our part of the stories that you might have not heard before. Plus with the quarantine, I have way too much time on hand. I want to end my words on a high note. Next to empathy, Buddhism also teaches us compassion, as only with compassion, one could cure the wound on people’s body and mind. I might have bored you with my uneventful story; but with my story, I want to tell you that even though I do relate to you in any capacity, we share more in common than we differ. For whatever dismay that some of us is in, we are in this together. And it could only be overcome by our collective and compassionate efforts, rather than inflicting more fear and alienation.
Part 9: we are thinking of you.
Admittedly, we human, as a group, is not the best at learning old lessons. From the plague in Europe in the middle age to the novel coronavirus in China today, as much as my best wishes goes, it will not be the last time that the virus breaks out and spreads among human race. As an old saying goes: pain is forgotten where gain follows. At the end of the day, we are not able to determine when the next outbreak will come, but we could decide what attitude and morale we are going to use to fight against it. Just like Albert Camus wrote in “La Peste”, which sounds so very true at this moment: “All I maintain is that on this earth there are pestilences and there are victims, and it's up to us, so far as possible, not to join forces with the pestilences.”
To all those who are still fighting the coronavirus at the frontline, I want to quote what my Dutch friends wrote in a greeting card for me during my solitude: “You may feel alone right now, but we are thinking of you!”.

Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell: Savor it because we won’t see Cas for over a month Recap
Then:
Tumblr media
In which writer, Davey Perez, continues to ascend to the Fan Throne of Goodness vacated by the much missed Robbie Thompson.
Now:
On a camping excursion in the wilds of Nebraska, a young woman, Gwen, attempts to split firewood against the grain, her boyfriend, Marcus, is busy watching nature on his iPad, and the audience realizes -with or without monsters- this cute city couple is DOOMED. Before their imminent demise, they talk about her acceptance to a veterinary school out-of-state, and the ability to make a long-distance relationship work. On the premise of getting more firewood, the boyfriend wanders away to practice his proposal speech. Gwen stumbles upon the ring. And unfortunately for Marcus, a hellhound stumbles upon him! He just makes it back to camp before getting shredding to pieces. Gwen stands paralyzed but eventually gets the wherewithal to slash the invisible beast with the ax (also against the grain --the hellhound lived, even if Gwen escaped.)
RIP Marcus.
Tumblr media
At the bunker, Sam and Dean and Lucille are just getting back from an epic hunting trip. (Fun Fact: Boris had to stop watching The Walking Dead just when Papa Winchester showed up. Too many sads.) It seems Sam keeps finding new jobs through a new computer program, aka, Frodo, aka, Mick Davies. So I see Sam hasn’t told his brother of his little allegiance yet. Dean’s ready to go, after all he has baby wipes in the car to remove any residual siren gunk, but Sam insists he shower first.
Tumblr media
Dean acquiesces but insists he’s going to use Sam’s fancy shampoo in retaliation. (Boris is willing to hand-wave Dean’s lack of cleanliness for himself due to his overwhelming need to hunt and forget about his mom issues, but getting monster gunk in Baby? That cannot stand.)
The boys make it to the scene of Marcus’s demise, finishing phone calls as they exit Baby. Sam (talking to his mom): “Let us know.” Dean (talking to Cas): “Love you too.” Oh wait, scratch that, reverse it. Sam fills Dean in on their mom’s recent hunt with the Brits. Dean fills Sam in on more angel killings (like, doesn’t that warrant a drop-everything-and-help-Cas situation? Finding the nephilim seems WAY more time sensitive than bear attacks, but don’t mind me, I’m just a bitter Cas girl.) (Natasha: raises hand in solidarity.)
Speaking of Cas, or Agent Solange...
Tumblr media
He’s at a diner, investigating the death of a waitress. Herb, the diner’s manager, believes she was killed by a Reptilian alien, you know, like the Queen of England. Cas is dismissive but Herb has proof and pulls out a tape! Man, this whole scene played like a goofier episode of The X-Files. It gave me happy feels. It also reminded me of Ronald Reznick and Mandroids. (And I love the silly reference to Misha Collin’s weird thing with the Queen.) In any event, they watch the video, which consists of Kelly Kline’s confrontation with angels and her rescue by Dagon, and her yellow eyes. “Like I said, reptilian,” Herb confirms. Cas takes the tape and leaves.
At the campsite, Sam and Dean hear about Gwen’s strange account of the attack. They were attacked by an invisible wolf. “Invisible dog. Sounds like a hellhound to me,” Dean concludes, and Sam agrees, as they head out to interview Gwen.
Once at Gwen’s house, the brothers disagree on how they should explain the situation. The much handsomer brother spitballs telling her the whole disturbing and unbelievable truth, but Sam says they just need to lie, a lot.
Tumblr media
Of course, by letting in Agents Clapton and Baker, Gwen unknowingly lets in the hellhound. They tell her that a bear killed her boyfriend. She is not in danger, but Gwen doesn’t believe them, and tells them to leave. And the hellhound attacks! Sam and Dean burst in and shoot the hound, but it escapes out the window.
Crowley. Oh Crowley, what are you doing with Lucifer? You’re a smart demon, Fergus. But this seems...ill-advised. Yet he continues to hold Lucifer prisoner and taunt him. Lucifer isn’t too concerned. “I’m still gonna peel off your skin and eat your soul.” Lucifer makes it clear that they both know that the chains that hold him are just a temporary situation. “I’m already 10 steps ahead,” Crowley reassures the audience. He then meets with Demon #1 and #2. There’s a lot of Hell business to handle.
Back at Gwen’s, Sam and Dean tell her the whole disturbing and unbelievable truth --a hellhound just attacked her. Dean’s admission that they’ve tangled with hellhounds in the past is an understatement. *crying in corner over sad season 3 feels* The boys tell her that hellhounds only go after people who have sold their soul to a demon. They ask her to recall anything in her past or Marcus’s that they might have done unknowingly. Her answer is a firm “No.” The brothers call in the big guns for a conundrum like this: Crowley.
Tumblr media
Summary: Dean calls Crowley “Peaches”, and Crowley is still pissed about the whole Gavin thing. Dean asks about the hellhounds and Demon #1 and #2 admit that Ramsey escaped. Crowley pops over to the brothers without hesitation.
Outside the diner a new angel, Kelvin, confronts Castiel. He’s looking for Kelly Kline as well and suggests that they partner up.
Back at Gwen’s house, Crowley unhelpfully introduces the hellhound as “THE Hellhound.” Sam squints inquisitively. Well, God created posies, koalas...
Tumblr media
...and hellhounds! He wanted to make God’s best friend but ended up with a vicious beast instead. Rather than killing all the hounds, Lucifer rescued Ramsey, a pregnant hellhound. Loyal to her first master, she’s the one hound Crowley has never been able to control. As to why this wayward hound is after Gwen? Well, she did whack it with an axe. You could say that hound has an “axe to grind.” (Shows myself out.) Everybody looks exasperated at Gwen when instead, IMO, they should be high fiving Gwen’s bad ass self for sticking an axe in a hellhound and surviving the encounter. Anyway, everybody - even Crowley - is ready to saddle up and put an end to Ramsey.
“That mutt’s head, mounted on my wall - good for the brand,” Crowley says, explaining his participation.
“A hellhound gunning for revenge,” Dean snarks. “Just when I thought this gig couldn’t get any weirder.”
“It can always get weirder,” Crowley tells him, weirdly. (I APPROVE of this message and also your weirdly significant look, Crowley...and by extension Andrew Dabb / Davy Perez?? That is a damn fine motto right there.)
Back in Crowley’s palace, two demons open up Lucifer’s cell with a key they purloined from Crowley’s pocket. They walk in to find Lucifer trussed up and mouth gagged.
Tumblr media
(At this point there was a commercial break during the broadcast. I feel compelled to tell you that I spent the whole commercial break cursing Crowley’s stupidity for locking Lucifer up with simple chains that open with a key. Crowley! Who is always so clever when it comes to self-preservation. Anyway.)
The two minions immediately begin fawning over Lucifer - and complaining about Crowley. He killed everyone involved in “the cage project.”. Minions 1 and 2 set Ramsey free as a distraction so they could bust Lucifer out.
Back in the woods Dean pulls out two holy-fire-treated pairs of eyeglasses. Dean and Crowley will patrol the woods for Ramsey while Sam drives around with Gwen in the Impala.
Dean settles a soulful look on Sammy. “Take care of her,” he implores. Oh Dean, you big soft package of cotton candy! Don’t worry! The Winchesters always find a way to save the day! While we’re all clutching at our hearts, Sam realizes that Dean was referring to Baby - not scared little axe-swinging, hellhound mauling Gwen. “Imagine she’s a beautiful woman,” Dean tells him. (The rest of us: side eye.) Okay, great talk, Dean. He heads off into the woods with Crowley as Sam drives away.
Boomeranging back to Castiel, he’s parked in a bar with Kelvin sipping waters. (Bartenders must HATE angels.) Heaven’s running along in an orderly fashion but the angels want him back to help with their nephilim problem. Castiel has the most field experience, after all.
Tumblr media
“I think you overestimate me,” Cas says, profoundly underestimating himself (as is his way lately).
Kelvin begs to differ and suggests that having Heaven waiting in the wings when the wee human Winchesters fail is just smart strategy. Plus, as a bonus, if Cas does Heaven a solid then he can go back to coming and going as he pleases. Cas doubts Kelvin’s ability to actually follow through on any of the promises he’s spinning, so Kelvin drops his power card. Kelvin is just a messenger from Heaven - Joshua can restore Cas to his rightful place in Heaven. Go on, emotes Cas, turning towards Kelvin.
“Imagine it, Castiel. For you to come and go as you please. Part of your family - your true family again.” Cas looks at him in consideration. (Me: Noooooooo Cas!)
Back in the palace, Lucifer is suffering through the worst Hell-torture of all: irritating minions. They finally finish outlining their list of demands. Well, one of them has a long list of demands. All that Minion #2 cares about is “Making Hell great again.” (Me: laugh cries)
At last they unlock Lucifer. Stupid STUPID minions. Minion 1 disintegrates in a puff of fire and ash. Minion 2 offers himself up. “My life is yours to devour!”
Lucifer: “See, now you just made it weird.” POOF.
Tumblr media
In the woods on the hellhound hunt, Crowley flirts with Dean. He’s all “those glasses bring out your eyes” and “remember that fivesome we had when you were a demon?”
Dean and Crowley marvel at a Winchester and the King of Hell working together yet again. “You saved Cas,” Dean says, at last thanking Crowley for saving the day a few episodes ago.
“Just to spare myself the Winchester man pain,” Crowley snarks.
Dean sees something in the woods - it’s Gwen’s boyfriend’s body, dragged back to Ramsey’s den. The hellhound’s den is empty!
For Science
Tumblr media
And back to the Impala, where Sam drives along merrily with Gwen who succumbs to the Impala’s magical confession and introspection powers. “This is all my fault,” she mourns. She asks Sam to pull over so she can vomit. When she returns she confesses that she wanted to break up with her boyfriend, but she still acted like everything was perfect between them. “Why couldn’t I just tell him the truth? I lied to make things easier.”
Sam weeps along with her (internally) and reflects upon his own lying lies with Dean. He finally pulls himself out of his miserable slump and looks up to see Ramsey snarling in front of them. (Me: Hit it with the car, Sam! Wouldn’t be the first dog, amirite?)
Tumblr media
Ramsey busts up Baby a bit, then Sam grabs an angel blade and heads out to kill the dog. The glasses get knocked off of his face during a scuffle and things look bad for our hero. Then Gwen comes out and knocks the hellhound off of Sam like a fucking bad ass.
Tumblr media
This gives Sam just the distraction needed to climb to his feet. When the hound rushes him again, he stabs her with the blade, killing her.
When the four regroup, Dean castigates Sam for his damaged car. A relieved Gwen gives Crowley a giant happy bunny hug. Sam thanks Crowley with actual words and feelings and Crowley zaps out. “He seems nice,” Gwen says, chirpily.
Crowley heads straight for the palace where Lucifer’s torture chair is empty! He finds Luci in his throne room. I’m yelling ZAP OUTTA THERE CROWLEY WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU when Crowley snaps his fingers and Lucifer’s magical archangel wings fizzle out.
“I’m always ten steps ahead,” Crowley reminds Lucifer. He had his vessel fixed up and heavily warded. Lucifer’s meatsuit is his prison! (Me: punches air in joy at this development) Just as Crowley learned not to underestimate the Winchesters, Lucifer really has to learn not to underestimate the MacLeods.
Crowley dusts off his hands, steps over a whimpering Lucifer, and settles onto his throne. Crowley’s going to rip apart Lucifer’s child in front of him, and then he’s going to continue his revenge. (I’m guessing with more torture-by-irritating-minion.)
Elsewhere, the boys are just making it back to the bunker when Cas calls. He has a lead on Kelly Kline. (Hooray!) Cut to Cas, getting out of his truck and walking into...fuuuuuuuck...a playground. While I’m freaking out, Cas tells the boys about Dagon.
Tumblr media
They hang up and Dean frowns at the phone. “He sound weird to you?” Dean, your worried husband rader is SPOT ON.
There’s no time to reflect on that, however. Sam gets an alert from the Men of Letters about another case. He decides to come clean to Dean, telling him that instead of a computer program feeding him cases, he’s been getting jobs from the BMoL. Sam tries to explain his position and apologizes for lying to Dean.
Dean hates it, but he agrees that they work with people they don’t trust all the time. Hell, they just worked with Crowley. So he’ll work with them on one condition: the second something feels off they both bail.
The phone rings again. “It’s Mick,” Sam says, holding up his phone.
“Pick it up,” Dean says, not radiating any kind of deep man pain at all.
Boris: Overall, on the surface, I felt like things were a bit off this episode. Dean seems to be taking all these lies and deceptions really well. What’s he thinking? Is he going along with Sam and Mary because he doesn’t want to lose them? Suddenly Sam has another family member to choose--and in a way he picked a side. Dean’s gut instinct is usually right --so it hurts to see him cave so easily to Sam and Mary.  And Cas? I want to believe that he went to heaven for one final goodbye. Can he find a way to use the angels to TFW’s advantage? So much hasn’t been said after his big confession. He’s said and done SO much for the Winchesters this season, but there’s been very little given to him in return. And, I’m totally on board for cleaning up the ridiculous Lucifer Meatsuit improbability. I just thought it was such a stupid reason for it, but to have Crowley be 10 steps ahead of Lucifer is satisfying to watch. And Sam saved the flipping day again! And started the trials again? He killed a hellhound. I realize it’s nbd for them these days, but it’s, uh, really not.
Natasha: Sam didn’t do the incantation, so no trials. I thought Dean was shocked about Sam’s news - bitter and worried, but also respecting Sam’s right to make his own choices. He’s probably going to angry fix his car the first chance he gets. I agree that Cas trying to get back into Heaven’s good graces is a tired storyline by this point. What I’m hoping is that Cas appears to agree because he sees the tactical advantage of using Heaven’s resources. After all, he just saw two angels confront Kelly Kline...they must have some resource that’s beyond him to find her. Furthermore, he seems intrigued by Joshua’s involvement. I think Cas wants to know who’s on the game board. I’m hoping that Cas gathers intel and heads down to the Winchesters when he’s put together a solid plan. However, there are definitely parallels between the Winchesters/BMoL and Cas/Heaven in terms of our heroes working with people they don’t trust, but that might help them achieve their goals in an efficient manner. Given that Cas is gone for the next 3 episodes leaves us with a ton of questions about what could explain his absence. And the fact that he isn’t telling the Winchesters a thing is breaking my fuckin’ heart.
Who’s a good Quote?
It’s two and two. Doesn't count if you flip ‘em inside out.
Computers. Monsters? Porn? Is there anything they can’t do?
Most sheeple can’t handle the truth. But not me. I’m woke.
Who ya gonna call? Douchebusters.
The FBI, the Man in Black. Well, you know, Beige.

where is christ in christmas?
There is a mystifying cliche that sometimes circulates this time of year: ‘they’ have taken the Christ out of Christmas. While I think it is very questionable Jesus would want to have anything to do with the capitalist spectacle that is ‘Christmas’ today, I would say (for that very reason) there is certainly some truth to the assertion that Christ has been removed from Christmas. I would also suggest that saying ‘Merry Christmas’ instead of ‘Happy Holidays’ laughably seems to do nothing to remedy this situation.
I have used this quote in past Advent reflections, but I think it should be an idea Christians perennially return to each Advent. The Anglican theologian and physicist John Polkinghorne wrote:
“In Advent, we think about the coming of Christ, particularly that first coming at Bethlehem and the final coming at the end of the age… But the truth of the matter is that Christ comes to us everyday, anonymously in the people in need who cross our path.”
Matthew 25 has Jesus remind his listeners that whatever they do to the least of these they do to him.
youtube
Yet this emphasis has often been treated rather dismissively, not only by conservatives, but even an anarchist like Jacques Ellul wrote in “Anarchy and Christianity”:
“In the 1970s we saw the same tendency in the so-called liberation theologies. In an extreme form a strategy has been found to make possible association with (South American) revolutionary movements. A poor person of any kind is supposedly identical with Jesus Christ.”
This is only to say, in my view, that liberation theologians are precisely the ones who show us what is demanded of those who actually want to keep “Christ in Christmas”. Liberation theologians are not abolishing Christ and replacing him with the poor, but finding God in those who suffer in the world, and in my view that is not something worth trying to put down.
Pope Francis said that it is “always right” to give something to someone in need, saying further that if "a glass of wine is the only happiness he has in life, that's OK. Instead, ask yourself what do you do on the sly? What 'happiness' do you seek in secret?" I think living out grace in such a radical way for the Christian depends on her recognizing Christ in all who are in need, like Pope Francis suggests we do.
The real ‘war on Christmas’ is waged every time a single mother is forced to work extended holiday shopping hours at her minimum wage job away from her children. It is then that Christ has been taken out of Christmas. Every time a migrant worker from Latin America and Caribbean has to work thousands of kilometres away from his family during the holidays under very poorly enforced labour laws, with no ability to switch jobs away from an abusive employer or access affordable health care, Christ has been removed from Christmas. Each poor ‘stranger’ turned away from the border back to a land devastated by structural adjustment and brutal colonial history (a land in which they daily fear for their lives) is another instance Christ vanishes from Christmas.
Saying ‘Happy Holidays’ is not what is taking the Christ out of Christmas. The cause of this tragedy occurs each time we give Christ no food when he’s hungry, give him nothing to drink when he’s thirsty, welcoming him not when he’s a stranger, clothing him not when he needs warmth and cleanliness, not caring for him when he’s sick, and neglecting him when he’s in prison (Matthew 25:42-43). There’s a lot of this sort of inaction this season, and most seasons for that matter. And I say this as someone most implicated in such passivity. If Christians want Christ back in Christmas, we might start acting like it, rather than wishing our Muslim and Jewish neighbours ‘Merry Christmas’.
The Question of Ecclesiology
Now Matthew 25 is a very important text. Conservative scholars love pointing out that when Jesus is talking about the “least of these” he’s talking about other “people of the Way” or “Nazarenes” (as Acts calls them), or what we more commonly know as “Christians” today. Now let us imagine for a moment that this interpretation should be the case, Christians have still so radically failed at even this low bar that we cannot at all escape from our glaring hypocrisy unscathed.
Let me proffer an example: the migrant caravan and the broader issue of Latin American migration across the American border. A Washington Post article, drawing from a poll they conducted with ABC, states that:
“75 percent of white evangelical Christians rated “the federal crackdown on undocumented immigrants” as positive, compared with 46 percent of U.S. adults overall, and 25 percent of nonwhite Christians.”
Almost 90% of the Latin American population identifies as Christian, and it’s safe to say the large majority of the people in the migrant caravan and people arriving at the American border are Christians. Yet it’s really hard to square white evangelical Christianity with even the most conservative interpretation of Matthew 25. When Jesus was a stranger, a child refugee running away from state-sanctioned violence (Herod), we welcome him by detaining him, separating him from his parents, and then throwing him out back into Herod’s reign of terror?
Dorothy Day once wrote that the Catholic Worker movement was
“not a Christian or religious community, we are an inn by the side of a road. We have no common sense. We do not say no.”
Catholic Worker houses, hotbeds for Christian anarchist organizing, are famous for accepting basically anyone who shows up at their front door in need of a place to stay. Rowan Williams points out that Day wrote that text about being “an inn by the side of a road” the day after Christmas in the 1970’s. In that same text Day goes on to quote Saint Teresa of Avila who wrote that “life is a night spent in a disorderly inn”. Williams went on to dismantle any easy romanticization of these Catholic Worker houses, as they were often significant violators of health codes, and were sometimes places of violence in which Day felt extremely unsafe and insecure under the threats some residents made against her. Day and her friend Peter Maurin were exemplars of people who took Matthew 25 very seriously and radically welcomed all in need, for they saw Christ in all these people, even the ones that threatened them with violence. And even beyond individual action, Maurin stated that his overarching goal in life was to make the world an easier place to be good. A political order that does not incentivize selfishness and competition, but encourages solidarity, cooperation, and mutual aid.
Anyways, I think the text of Matthew 25 itself radically problematizes hegemonic conceptions of ecclesiology that buttress easy boundaries that situate people as either clearly belonging or not belonging in ‘the Church’, and hence worthy of Christian care and mutual aid.
In a fantastic episode of the Magnificast podcast, Zach Dimiele elaborates on the ecclesiology of Leonardo Boff, a liberation theologian who even a firebrand communist and atheist like Fidel Castro kept on his bookshelf. Dimiele makes a very interesting point that in Matthew 25, at Christ’s return the people ask Christ when they fed (or did not feed) him, clothed (or did not clothe) him, welcomed (or did not welcome) him, et cetera. And in so doing, they show that they are unable to recognize Christ, because Christ’s body has parts that are sometimes not recognized as Christ’s own. Dimiele concludes that “the body of Christ is ultimately a body with porous and expansive borders. Connecting this idea with the thought of Michael Polanyi, I suggest that the church is body with parts that it cannot apprehend.”
There are of course limits to this line of thinking, as Christ’s body cannot be a universalized conception imposed on all peoples to universally characterize them as either belonging or not belonging to some universal liberative project. However, I think Matthew 25 has potential for problematizing easy ecclesiological formulations that are quite pervasive in the Christian tradition. If there are people that are clearly not recognized as part of Christ’s body, it is likelier to be the rich and the uncompassionate, than some doctrinally deviant people, for upon Christ’s return it is the uncompassionate who are not recognized by Christ in Matthew 25.
John Hick locates the modern version of this incarnational theology (which Dimiele draws from) back into the existential theology of Bultmann and its resulting notion of the ‘Christ-event’:
“The notion of the Christ-event seems to have appeared first in Rudolf Bultmann’s existentialist interpretation of the New Testament according to which Christian faith is a response, not to the largely unknown Jesus of Nazareth, but to the present notion of Jesus as the Christ; so that whenever ‘the Christ’ is preached this is ‘a continuation of the Christ Event’”
This approach is often explained by people like Marcus Borg with a distinction between the historical Jesus and the Jesus of tradition (who continues by way of preaching, along with other Christian practices). I think Bultmann’s views are rendered quite well by a joke I once heard Hauerwas tell, though Hauerwas says it was just a joke that was circulating Yale or Duke when he was there. It goes something like this:
The Pope phones Bultmann who he sees as an important Protestant figure who needs to hear about this big news. Bultman answers the phone, and after minor polite exchanges, the Pope gets down to business: “I have some really big news to share with you. Some of it is good, but some of it is rather bad… I will start with the good news. The archaeological team has gotten back to me with a groundbreaking discovery. They have confirmed to me that they have found Christ’s tomb. That is the good news… The bad news is they also found his body inside.” The Pope hears a long pause on the other line, feeling quite worried how Bultmann is taking this heavy news. Finally after some time, Bultmann replies… “So… he really did exist.”
That was a bit of a tangent, though Bultmann was particularly known for such a project of demythologizing the Christian faith, and the joke associating him with the ‘Christ myth theory’ does give a sense of his reputation as a skeptic. Bultmann’s emphasis then was an existential one rather than a metaphysical or historical one. John Hick then goes onto describe how this “Christ-event” Christology was elaborated in a more communal direction in which ecclesiology and Christology coalesce together:
“in the work of another New Testament scholar, John Knox, the Christ-event has an ecclesiastical (and thus social) rather than an existential (and more individual) meaning. The Christian faith is not centred in the person of Jesus of Nazareth alone but in the church's developing memory - not, however, ordinary literal memory but a metaphorical 'memory' - of him as its divine Lord (Knox 1967, 2f.). For Knox, 'The phrase "Jesus Christ our Lord" designates, not primarily an historical individual in the past, but a present reality actually experienced within the common life' (Knox 1967, 2). Indeed, 'The Church is the distinctive Christian reality . . . And it is because the Church is [Christ's] body and, in history, his only body, that we often use the words "Christ" and "Church" interchangeably, saying "in Christ" when we are wanting to refer to what it really means to be - and really to be - in the Church. It is this embodiment or incarnation (that is, the Church) which is most immediately - indeed alone is immediately - known . . . And so I say again, the Incarnation originally took place, not within the limits of an individual's individual existence, but in the new communal reality, in principle co-extensive with mankind, of which he was the creative centre' (Knox 1967, 66-7).”
This in some sense is the idea behind the famous poem often misattributed to Saint Teresa of Avila, though far more likely by the Methodist minister Mark Guy Pearse (1842-1930), and Quaker medical missionary Sarah Elizabeth Rowntree. This poem goes:
“Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body.”
youtube
Now if this notion of Incarnation by itself seems too similar to some unhelpful forms of Death of God theology or its antecedent Hegelian pneumatology, I will just briefly admit that this may likely be the case. I then want to ask what does it mean to have faith, for that might be the question that has yet to be properly addressed.
What is Faith? To What Telos?
Evangelical Christians claim to be a ‘Bible-believing’ bunch, and some of them can spend hours schooling you in Pauline justification, saying Christianity is not about what you have to ‘do’ but what Jesus has already ‘done’. I think an interesting road into this is Paul’s quotation of Habakkuk in Romans 1:17: “The one who is righteous will live by faith.” Yet what does it mean to live by faith? Maybe we should take a closer look at the eschatological text in Habakkuk 2 which Paul is drawing from:
“For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith. Moreover, wealth is treacherous; the arrogant do not endure. They open their throats wide as Sheol; like Death they never have enough. They gather all nations for themselves, and collect all peoples as their own.
Alas for you who heap up what is not your own!” How long will you load yourselves with goods taken in pledge? Will not your own creditors suddenly rise, and those who make you tremble wake up? Then you will be booty for them. Because you have plundered many nations, all that survive of the peoples shall plunder you— because of human bloodshed, and violence to the earth, to cities and all who live in them. “Alas for you who get evil gain for your house, setting your nest on high to be safe from the reach of harm!” You have devised shame for your house by cutting off many peoples; you have forfeited your life. The very stones will cry out from the wall, and the plaster will respond from the woodwork. “Alas for you who build a town by bloodshed, and found a city on iniquity!” Is it not from the Lord of hosts that peoples labor only to feed the flames, and nations weary themselves for nothing? But the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.
The cup in the Lord’s right hand will come around to you, and shame will come upon your glory! For the violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you; the destruction of the animals will terrify you—because of human bloodshed and violence to the earth, to cities and all who live in them.”
If there ever was a text for Advent 2018, Habakkuk 2 would have to be it. Advent is naturally a messianic season, and as such it recognizes there is something to be saved from. Well for one, a world where there is such thing as ‘wealth’, which in our world, is just another word for extreme inequality.
youtube
Advent people might already be aware that wealth is treacherous, as Jesus said “Woe to you who are rich” (Luke 6:24) which he learned from his mother who said the powerful would be dethroned and the rich sent away empty (Luke 1:52-53). Jesus already said “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God,” (Matthew 19:24). So, in light of all that, how can any Christian valourize Donald Trump of all people, or anyone of the executive class on that shameful Forbes yearly billionaire list: Gates, Musk, Ortega, Arnault, Branson, whoever? James 5:1-3 reads:
“Come now, you rich people, weep and wail for the miseries that are coming to you. Your riches have rotted, and your clothes are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you, and it will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure for the last days.”
Advent is an anticipation of those last days, and James gives a dramatic suggestion of what we might expect.
We know imperial governments and MNCs continue to open their throats wide as Sheol, just as in the days of explicit colonialism, gathering pools of cheap labour for themselves like Death itself, expropriating from these children of God what does not truly belong to neither Empire nor MNC. They have plundered the lands under colonialism and extracted resources from the periphery into the core. And like Joseph did for Pharaoh, leveraged the poor’s newly formed desperation in the the wake of plunder, and craft them into dependent debtors owned by centralized power.
How much of the US economy depends on the manufacture of arms? How many towns and cities built on bloodshed and iniquity, people labouring only to feed flames? The Guardian reports that in Yemen, “Since 2015, more than 28,000 thousand people have been killed or injured,” under the US-backed Saudi-led coalition. This past August, a school bus was bombed and 44 children were killed by laser-guided bomb manufactured by the US multinational corporation Lockheed Martin. If this is not the sort of human bloodshed that Habakkuk speaks of and all this is not the “violence to cities and all who live in them” he refers to, I’m not sure what is.
A 2016 UNEP report on the water quality situation of the formerly colonized world’s river systems estimates that:
“severe pathogenic pollution affects around one third of all rivers, severe organic pollution around one seventh of all rivers, and severe and moderate salinity pollution around one-tenth of all rivers in these regions.”
Water that humans and animals alike rely on, which have been devastated by capital, which ceaselessly moves into regions with no capacity to hold MNCs accountable for their reckless productive practices. In the past five decades, average animal (mammal, bird, fish, reptile, and amphibian) populations have declined by 60%, and in that same time span 20% of the Amazon has vanished. If that is not violence to the earth I’m not sure what is.
How many Christian policymakers in the US claim that migrants from Latin America are violent and dangerous and should be kept out. Not only is that false, as large-scale studies consistently show either a negative correlation of immigration with crime rates or none at all. Yet even if the connection were true, what would it mean for Habakkuk to condemn those who “set [their] nest on high to be safe from the reach of harm!” (Harm which doesn’t even exist.) What does it mean for Habakkuk to claim that in doing such actions:
“You have devised shame for your house by cutting off many peoples; you have forfeited your life. The very stones will cry out from the wall, and the plaster will respond from the woodwork.”
What is Trump’s wall crying out today? The core always builds around itself in such a way to freely allow capital to flow in, but to keep out the very children of God who have been exploited brutally at the periphery.
Sarah Ngu in her podcast Religious Socialism talks about various people of faith gathering for ‘Jericho walks’, where for example they circumambulate around an ICE building calling for Trump’s wall to crumble down as the walls of Jericho fell in the book of Joshua. I find this fascinating because this type of performative protest is taking one of the most genocidal books in the Bible (which has been an endless source of justification for violent colonialism) and making it into something that counters that tendency. This draws from a rich tradition of this type of subversive reclamation of biblical texts which show up for example in Civil Rights protests to tear down the walls of segregation. Paul Robeson’s beautiful rendition of “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho” is a beautiful example, which is still used in protest against Israel’s walls constructed on Palestinian territory.
youtube
A cluster of anarchists who call themselves the “Friendly Fire Collective” (who have members from various faith backgrounds including Catholicism, Quakerism, Islam and Wicca) also enacted a traditional Catholic exorcism at their local ICE building, casting the demons of White Supremacy out of the building, which I thought was a wonderful idea. They talk a bit about it in another Magnificast episode. Friendly Fire’s occupation of the ICE building was eventually raided rather violently by police and people’s heads were bashed and rosary beads torn from their hands and stomped on.
Many of these religious acts of protest are also involved with the New Sanctuary Movement, which is one of the few remaining widespread acts of civil disobedience churches still engage in by illegally harbouring undocumented peoples within their buildings and in the houses of their congregants to protect them from deportation or detainment. I learnt about this fascinating network of people of faith in Mary Jo Leddy’s book “At the Border Called Hope”, and her engagements with the movement while helping to run Romero House in Toronto which helps refugees make a home for themselves in Canada and navigate the monstrosity that is Canadian bureaucracy.
I see these small acts of resistance against state power as prefiguring the end of such unjust orders and the true Advent of God’s kindom. These are the acts of faith that I think are true to Habakkuk’s text that Paul refers to. It is a faith in the end of an unjust order, of Empire. It is the rejection of passive nihilism and the will to start crafting: “our freedom by cutting holes in the fabric of this reality, by forging new realities which will, in turn, fashion us,” as the anarchist collective CrimethInc wrote. In this season of Advent we should hold fast to Mary’s Magnificat which encourages us in this anticipation of a kindom already under way:
“He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.”
It is this radical orientation to resist power that Jesus was fostered within as a child, and to which we inherit as Christians. And it is in fact a part of a long prophetic Jewish tradition. The flattening imagery echoes Isaiah 40:4 which surfaces in Handel’s Messiah.
youtube
This is the prefigurative revolutionary task to “prepare the way of the Lord”. It’s Advent now and we have some work to do.

Yet another episode of The 100 where things go swimmingly, 100% according to plan, with no hiccups and DEFINITELY no wars being declared.
Tumblr media
C’MON. Of course things went sideways. Actually, saying things went sideways is an understatement. Things went sideways, fell off a cliff, hit every sharp outcropping on the way down, exploded at the bottom of the cliff, then released a lake of liquid fire that engulfed half the earth.
So, business as usual.
Looking around the review sites yields a consensus opinion that season 5 is on fire, giving us perhaps the best first four episodes of any season. If anything, things seem more crystallized this season, more in-focus than ever before. That six year time jump has re-invigorated a show whose moral lessons started to grow a bit rote. With this episode, the table is set for the rest of the season: we at war, kids. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy…………..?
Tumblr media
Written by Charmaine DeGraté and directed by Dean White, “Pandora’s Box” has loosed all sorts of anarchy upon the world and the fallout is going to be delicious. This episode probably overtakes “Fallen” as my favorite of DeGraté’s work. Like last week, this episode is PACKED with a lot of information and character moments, but unlike last week, it lit the fuse for a showdown between a bunch of prisoners and a death cult.
Strap in, folks. Season 5 is LIT. Let’s get into it.
You’re In a Cult, Call Your Dad. No, Seriously, Call Your Dad!
“Red Queen” showed us a little bit of what became of life in the bunker, but this episode pretty much reveals the ugly crazy in all it’s … uh … glory? The chanting, the single-mindedness, the blind devotion to a leader…it’s a freakin’ cult.
Tumblr media
This is a joke within a joke. JOKECEPTION.
Octavia. Girl. What in the FUCK have you created?
We knew things had gone to shit in the bunker, but this is a full on brand of cray-cray that most people, at first blush, seem to have completely bought into. Octavia is almost unrecognizable from the girl we saw in season 1 and she’s frightening as fuck. But who frightens me more?
Gaia. SHE SCARES ME Y’ALL.
Tumblr media
You guys…I want to like her, but I don’t trust her. She’s a religious zealot who has transferred her faith in the Flame onto Blodreina. While Octavia is the “leader,” Gaia is the one moving the gears, enforcing Wonkru’s laws, and ensuring that Wonkru is as dedicated to Octavia as Gaia is…or at least the IDEA of Octavia. At this point, I think anyone could be Blodreina as long as Gaia is there to protect the position of what is essentially the Commander for a new, very dark age. After all, the Flame went in and out of a long line of Commanders, all of which seemed interchangeable, with only Becca and Lexa as notable exceptions.
People filling that seat come and go…the person isn’t important, the position is. I honestly think if Octavia were to fall, Gaia would just find another Red Queen or King to take over as figurehead, as long as Gaia herself was always by his/her side. Octavia dies? Oh well, Wonkru finds a new Blodreina, the cult goes on. I’m tellin’ y’all, Gaia shady.
Tumblr media
I find it ironic that a place built by one cult is now home to another. In my season 5 predictions, I thought we’d learn more about Second Dawn and Cadogan. And while we still might, Wonkru certainly gives them a run for their money, and seem far more deadly and dedicated to Blodreina.
What we have yet to see are the cracks in the Wonkru armor, save for Indra, who seems to be loyal to Octavia to a point. Indra always looks like she’s unhappy with someone or something, but I truly believe she’s not a big proponent of the fighting pit, but things have gone too far for her to speak up now. Only through her actions of trying to protect Kane do we see a small act of rebellion on her part. Her story and how she interacts with both Gaia and Octavia will be very interesting this season. I don’t think she’s above betraying Octavia, but it will take A LOT to get her there.
Take note of the bunker’s lighting. Much of it has a red tinge to it…a nice stylistic choice to further reinforce the idea of the Red Queen. It’s also, obviously, the color of blood. The bunker is completely in Octavia’s control. Everyone looks to her to for permission. Now that Wonkru is out of this confined space, will they continue to look to her for all their orders, do they trust she can continue to protect them, or will she – or Wonkru – start cracking under pressure now that they’ve escaped their petri dish of horror?
And what if Octavia thinks she has to be even more brutal in the face of an enemy? Guys…we in for some shit.
GODDAMN, Kane and Abby Need a Hot Shower, Some Soup, and a Nap
Y’all, Kane and Abby look rode hard and put up wet. Both look to be mentally and emotionally spent. The past six years have not been kind.
Tumblr media
It’s clear Kane and Abby have had a hard road in the bunker. Kane looks worn down to the bone, and Abby doesn’t look much better, addicted to pills for what looks like the past six years.
When Kane makes his last appeal to Octavia, I think it’s waaaaaaaaaay too late to propose that they try to do better. That ship has sailed. Even Kane acknowledges that Octavia has made Wonkru strong, got them through whatever the “dark year” was. And that’s his mistake…allowing things to go on too long without speaking up, without appealing to Octavia’s better angels before she totally became Blodreina. Because truth be told, there’s little of Octavia left. She’s now this new entity that she thought she needed to be to keep the bunker as clear of chaos as possible. Keeping the chaos contained to the fighting pit. In the process, Octavia has become hardened in a way that yields only to a black/white view of the world: Wonkru or enemy of Wonkru. It’s a mantra that she repeats six years later. While that type of solidarity might have served to get control of the bunker, maintaining control has taken something else entirely. 400 people dead…what exactly happened in those six years? And that dark year? WTF is that???!!!
Kane has always tried to fight for a better world since he saw the error of his ways in season 2, but here he’s just defeated. He pleads with Octavia, but it’s such a last ditch effort, an argument made too many times to carry much weight anymore. Especially with someone as far down a dark path as Octavia. I understand the feeling. I live in the US during a sham presidency full of lies and corruption. No matter what you do, think, or feel, things just seem out of control and the world is upside down.
Tumblr media
Abby’s addiction is going to be a tough story line to maneuver her through. We still don’t quite know why Abby needs the drugs she’s on, and we don’t know what kind of drugs they are. I think we have to assume she’s suffering from the same side effects of jacking out of ALIE that Raven was. And seeing as she’s seemingly referred to as the only doctor (hello? what about Jackson?), the pressure to be that for 800+ people while your brain is frizting out is probably overwhelming. She strugs to func something fierce.
Kane and Abby repeat some lines we’ve heard in the past, that they’ve done terrible things to survive, but it’s so half-hearted on her part that it’s just rote now. Kane knows this and says it’s just something they tell themselves to justify the horrors they’ve inflicted on others and each other. There’s no more fight left in these two. Even when Kane is going to knowingly sacrifice himself, it’s not out of some noble desire to be better or rise above the chaos…I genuinely think he’s completely spent. There’s no more energy left to appeal to anyone’s better selves or to try and fight for a better world or better versions of themselves…it’s all too much.
I would usually joke about Beardy Sexy Kane and full-size body pillows of said individual, but watching him…watching everything in the bunker…is just painful. I didn’t like watching the bunker scenes at all because they were filled with so much culty cray cray and hurt thrust upon Kabby that it made me uncomfortable. Good…I should not watch Wonkru’s death pit and feel good about it. I should feel creepy crawlies about what’s transpired down there.
Speaking of creepy crawlies…
WHAT. THE. FUCK. HAPPENED. IN. THE. DARK. YEAR. QUESTION. MARK. EXCLAMATION. POINT.

Reunions, Reunions Everywhere! Come Get Your Hot, Fresh Reunions!
Goddamn, this episode wasn’t pulling any emotional punches and thank god it didn’t. We finally see Clarke and Bellamy back together after six years. Bellamy was certain he’d never see Clarke again because she was presumed dead, and Clarke had to have been worried that something went wrong on the Ark after they didn’t return to earth after five years. So it’s no wonder that these two clasp ahold of each other as if they can’t believe the other is corporeal.
Tumblr media
While I love this reunion, the one that really got me in the feels was Clarke and Raven. Not even in the same room together, I got hit straight in the heart stings by Raven’s reaction. The look on her face, and thanking Clarke for saving them…Princess Mechanic has been a dynamic I’ve loved over the years, even when I’ve felt this friendship has been underserved a bit in previous seasons. I hope we get more of Raven and Clarke and Clarke and Murphy, who uttered the line I head cannoned almost immediately after the season 4 finale. OF COURSE there was going to be a “and they say I’M the cockroach” joke. I love it.
I always long for more interaction between Clarke and Murphy and Clarke and Raven. I know not all of these relationships can get screen time, but there’s still a lot of emotional depths to plumb, especially after six years of evolution and change. Tearing characters apart and putting them through the ringer then bringing them back together again affords the opportunity to explore new aspects of character interactions, and I hope we just get more of those great character moments.
Speaking of reunions…
Welcome to My Death Bunker Horror Show Beautiful Home!
Bellamy makes a deal with Diyoza to use their mining equipment to open up the bunker. The first person to rappel down is, of course, big brother Bellamy, who is greeted by his sister, who is so totally not a murderous cult leader now.
We get to see Octavia reemerge for all of two seconds as she embraces Bellamy. Blink and you’ll miss her. That might be the last we see of Octavia because she’s Blodreina now…even Miller, her OG friend from the dropship, calls her by this title. It’s JARRING. These old friends from the bunker are a welcome sight, but also a bit off. It’s like re-connecting with old friends on Facebook and they eventually want to get together with you to talk about a great work-from-home opportunity. They look the same, but they’re Stepfordy now and it’s awkward.
I’m tellin’ y’all…if Miller starts evangelizing about a skin care line, BEWARE.
When Clarke rappels down moments after Bellamy, she’s much quicker on the uptake when she realizes she’s literally in a pit covered in blood and weapons, with spectators on all sides.
Tumblr media
It’s only after Octavia goes to awkwardly greet Clarke…
…that Bellamy starts taking a look around and begins to understand what’s been going on in the rotunda for six years.
Tumblr media
Something’s definitely fucked up about this place.
Diyoza and McCreary both come down as well and while Diyoza seems unfazed, I get the feeling that McCreary might be a little into what Octavia has done with the place.
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed all the reunions that we got after opening up the bunker, especially between Bellamy and Octavia and Clarke and Octavia. Clarke and Abby left me feeling a bit cold because Abby isn’t really Abby…she’s a junkie right now and I wonder how much the drugs are affecting her decisions. Especially the decision to go with the Eligius crew at the end of the episode. Yes, it was a chance to save Kane, but why was she so willing to part from Clarke that quickly?
The somewhat lukewarm reunion between Clarke and Octavia is very interesting to me. No, I didn’t expect warm hugs all around, given the history between these two (remember, Clarke’s last notable action towards Octavia was stealing the bunker out from under her). There is so much tension and unspoken conflict in this relationship that I hope gets to play out this season. These two have never really had it out and Madi might be the chess piece that Octavia uses to further her own agenda (whatever that may be outside of war) while screwing over Clarke. I am here for this conflict and for them finally having it out. Throw down, ladies!
So let’s talk a little about the episode’s title, “Pandora’s Box.” It’s obvious that cracking open the bunker is a metaphor for opening up Pandora’s Box. The story is that once opened, a whole bunch of bad stuff escapes into the world – death, sickness, evil. Pandora hastily closes the box once she realizes what’s being unleashed onto the world, only to prevent the last thing from escaping – hope.
It’s kinda interesting to note that the box was originally a jar, turned into a box through a mistranslation. The Eligius crew break into the bunker in the high ceiling directly above the fighting pit. The pit itself is at the bottom of a large, round room. Sorta shaped like a jar, if one had to describe it in such terms.
What I find interesting is that the bunker is the symbol of Pandora’s Box, meaning that all the bad shit loosed upon the world is coming from this bunker. From Wonkru. From Octavia. That’s quite the statement to make regarding what the Bunker people have become, because it’s not like the Eligius crew is a bunch of choirboys and girls. If Wonkru is the evil coming from Pandora’s Box…what does the Eligius crew represent? A sleeping giant is vaguely threatening. You don’t want to wake a sleeping giant…but this group seems to have a lot less glue holding it together than Wonkru, and we’ve seen some rumblings of a coup. Diyoza has a huge goat rodeo to try and control. Good luck, girl!
Another bit of an aside, I really love the use of light and darkness when Bellamy descends into the bunker. He’s bathed in light and cannot see into the darkness, where Octavia and everyone else is just out of sight…I don’t think this is a mere visual trick. It’s symbolic. When Octavia is pulled up, she rises up in the light, towards freedom, towards the heavens. It’s almost Christ-like. Which again, I don’t think is simply a cool visual. Consider her S5 poster:
When I saw it, I immediately thought “goddamn if that isn’t a post-resurrection Christ pose.” Bathed in light, palms out to display his Crucifixion wounds…it’s a very familiar visual from my Catholic school days.
Now am I saying that Octavia is Christ? Hell no…but displaying her as a religious figure makes sense, especially given how devoted her people are to her. She’s the object of a belief system that resembles religion, especially if Gaia had a hand in its formation. And like any dogmatic system, it could prove to be dangerous in the hands of zealots and fanatics. She is also, in a sense, resurrected as she emerges from the bunker…or her tomb, if you will. All of Wonkru is freed from their underground crypt…from the ashes they did indeed rise.
Octavia presented as a mythological figure fits her character arc, especially considering her past. Octavia was brought up on a steady diet of mythology literature…she knows the power of larger than life figures and of choices that can bring down gods.
Stupid Sexy Dangerous Eligius
I liked the Eligius crew last week. I like the Eligius crew this week. And though they got double-crossy and murdery and I STILL LIKE THEM.
I’m a garbage person, I accept this, but I know you, dear reader, love them too. Join me in my abode.
Tumblr media
BYOB.
Okay y’all, we had several mysteries last week from this group, but now we find out they need a doctor to find a cure for something…cure for what? Is it something to do with cryosleep? Did they find something out in space that they need to deal with? Where is home? I’m assuming Diyoza is talking about the valley they’ve claimed as their own, but it’s still on odd term to use for some place they’ve been for all of a hot minute.
And what’s the deal with Diyoza and McCreary? I kinda get a vibe that they might have hooked up. Is it just me?
Tumblr media
I know…how heteronormative of me.
There are times when he’s almost…not completely McMurdery around her. Not often, and certainly not enough data to really say it’s a thing, but I think there’s more to this adversarial relationship than meets the eye. When Szybunka approaches McCreary to suggest overthrowing Diyoza, McCreary seems to be planning something…or is he merely trying to appease him?
McCreary later shoots Szybunka in the head after Szybunka disobeys orders and vaporizes one of Octavia’s people. Is this a punishment for disobeying orders? Is he getting rid of a weak link in planning a coup? Or is he preventing Szybunka’s eventual betrayal of Diyoza? Hard to know right now what McCreary’s motivation is here without knowing anything about his and Diyoza’s backstory.
We also see more of Zeke this episode…just a moment, we’re interrupting our regularly scheduled review to bring you this update…
Tumblr media
Zeke is not his first name anymore. Apparently it’s Miles. I’M SHOOK.
Tumblr media
I guess according to JRoth there were legal reasons for changing his name from Zeke Shaw to Miles Shaw. I know this is hard for the fandom to accept as we’ve taken him into our bosom as Zeke. For a while it created some confusion for me because there’s a Deke Shaw on Agents of SHIELD. I’m getting old, I can’t even keep my dogs’ names straight, so maybe this is a good thing.
ANYHOO, Shaw and Raven get into a little cyber flirt when they both try to circumvent the other. Shaw is clearly impressed with our girl Raven, who, with style and panache, throws up her Raven symbol from season 3 to let us know she’s not messing around. MY GIRL GOT SHAW ON LOCK DOWN. This is Raven Reyes we’re talkin’ about. Child, please.
Tumblr media
It’s apparent that Shaw isn’t exactly on Team Diyoza and has some sort of moral code. He doesn’t think outrightly killing folks is the best thing to do. I 100% believe he faked not being able to launch those missiles. Oh sweetie…do you know what show you’re on? Go check it out on Netflix and report back once you’ve realized that until you’ve racked up a body count into the hundreds, you ain’t shit.
One of the things we find out this episode is that there have been four Eligius ships. First one was unmanned, and exploratory ship. Second was a mining expedition, but undermanned for the job. Forth one, well we know it’s a mining vessel full of prisoners for all the hard labor. But Eligius III? All data is about that mission is encrypted. THERE’S A MYSTERY AFOOT!
Tumblr media
We know this ship had nightbloods on it…that was mentioned when Diyoza and Shaw saw Clarke’s blood. We can also assume it had cryosleep technology since both were created by Becca. But what happened to that ship? Why is all information protected? I love these little clues that keep getting dropped for us to mull over. I can tell you what most people think: ALIENS. Because at this point, why not?
I Can’t Stop Loving Diyoza. Sorry Not Sorry.
Am I still in love with Charmaine Diyoza? You bet your sweet ass I am. Last episode I thought that while dangerous and not to be fucked with, she was pragmatic and reasonable to an extent.
This episode she went back on her word to Bellamy, after working behind the scenes to circumvent his leverage. Not cool, Diyoza.
Tumblr media
(that’s okay i still love you shhhhh don’t tell)
While 283 sleeping prisoners is a lot of people, what exactly do they mean to her? Why care about this group of people? She’s protective of them even before it’s apparent that there’s a big threat she needs to contend with in Wonkru. We don’t know if she’s aware at this point that they and Wonkru make up the last remaining contingent of humankind. Clarke never got through her whole story, so Diyoza’s concern over the 283 prisoners may have nothing to do with ensuring the continued existence of the human race and genetic diversity. What is it then?
You know, perhaps Diyoza just doesn’t have an off switch. She was a Navy SEAL, y’all. That’s INTENSE. Then she was a domestic terrorist…like DOUBLE INTENSE. Now she’s ostensibly the leader of this rag tag prisoner army, upon which she seems to impose some sort of rank and file to since Shaw takes orders from her and McCreary sometimes is a good boy and listens to her.
I still wanna know how she became the leader of all these murdery bad asses. I suspect she had a stare-down with the biggest dog in the yard and that big dog withered under her glare. Y’all…you see how she looks at people? You want her to look at YOU like that? She is S.E.R.I.O.U.S.
(omg i luv her)
While I was disappointed in her decision to renege on her deal with Bellamy, it didn’t surprise me one bit. I know what show I’m watching. Nobody calls splitsies on the one last patch of green on earth and sees that plan through!
Tumblr media
I loved her interaction with both Blakes, but her squaring up against Octavia was riveting. Diyoza sizing Octavia up was awesome. She’s so fucking cool under pressure and is assured that she’s the baddest bitch in the room. Octavia has a nice death pit and all, but she doesn’t have devastating sonic weapons that can break up rocks, destroy buildings, or turn humans into pink mist.
Let’s just say I am all about this Octavia/Diyoza face off. I think it’s positively delicious. Give me all the drama and conflict and tension (may some of it be sexual!) you can!
Tumblr media
IT ME. It so very me. I AM A MESSY BENCH.
The Raven and the Cockroach
I love this dynamic so, so much. In my last review, I said that these two probably know each other the best at their core. There’s no pretense between these two because their bullshit detectors are set so high and each other knows it. They’re able to be honest and raw in a way I would never have thought possible after early seasons.
Murphy has this brilliant way of putting his foot in his mouth with people, but I love when he does it this episode with Raven and immediately recognizes he fucked up. It leads to some great dialog between these two, with Murphy willing to be the one that kills the prisoners, understanding that it’s something Raven is unable to do. And I love that about him. Not only did he stay behind because he wondered why Raven should be the one to sacrifice herself again, but he’s willing to bear the burden of actively killing 283 people.
When Murphy says he’ll pull the lever, we hear a distant roar from earth. It’s Clarke..
Tumblr media
NO ONE TOUCHES THE LEVER. LEVERS BELONG TO CLARKE.
God, it’s like Murphy doesn’t even watch The 100.
When Raven and Murphy have to face death or self-preservation, they choose the later, but that means awakening all the sleeping giants. And those sleeping giants look like meanies! It’s going to get worse up on the Eligius before it gets better.
The Dark Year
Okay, but what if it’s just the year Octavia got REALLY into jam bands due to Kara’s awful influence and Kane was able to pull her out of it but now Octavia’s all like “don’t EVER mention Dave Matthews AGAIN!”?
Because, honestly, what’s darker than being into jam bands?
**I suddenly remember prog rock exists** nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…….
Being Bellamy Blake
Guys, did y’all think that Diyoza was really going to share half of Eden with Bellamy and co.?
I don’t know what Bellamy thought would happen either, but you go to war with the army you have, not the army you want. Do I think that Bellamy was naive enough to think things would go according to plan? No…he even says as much to Octavia when he says he doesn’t trust Diyoza. But leverage. He has it. Until he doesn’t.
Bellamy and Spacekru were never in much of a superior position to begin with, only banking on Diyoza caring about the prisoners still aboard the Eligius. But he knew he had Raven’s smarts and could bank on that to get him enough time to bargain with Prisonkru. There’s a fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants quality to Bellamy’s plan that works where it can. Again, until it doesn’t.
I daresay I can’t think of a better improvisational plan to bargain for their lives with Diyoza than what he comes up with, and remember he has the counsel of Raven, Murphy, Echo, and the others to listen to. He does the best with what he has.
That Octavia immediately blames Bellamy for things going south is pretty much Octavia’s brand. To which I say:
Tumblr media
What other plan could have gotten Octavia and Wonkru out of that bunker? Was Bellamy to pull mining equipment out of his ass? I understand Octavia’s anger and frustration, but taking it out on Bellamy felt immature of her, a reminder that perhaps Blodreina is still very much an emotionally stunted girl who grew up under the floor and didn’t get the socialization she needed to properly and rationally address her situation with the appropriate reactions. She needed peer interaction, not Ovid and isolation.
I have a feeling this is going to be me to Octavia for much of the season:
Tumblr media
She’ll need to take responsibility not only for how she reacts to things, but for what she’s become and while her metamorphosis into this Red Queen might have saved lives, what did it turn those lives, including her own, into?
Put on a Pot of Coffee, We Goin’ to War!
We kinda knew from previews and whatnot that season 5 would be about a war for Eden. One garden…two serpents (we assume Octavia and Diyoza, but that seems almost too simplistic for now).
What’s interesting is two big forces are at play here, and neither of them are being directed or led by Clarke or Bellamy. Instead we have Octavia leading Wonkru and Diyoza leading Team Eligius. It’s strange to see Clarke on the sidelines of a conflict.
At the same time, it’s kinda nice to see Clarke in a position where she has to react instead of proactively make some sweeping decision that affects a great many people. With Madi to protect, her decisions are likely to be very personal and she may even back off from trying to assert herself as a leader.
Bellamy has been a leader, but seems he’ll get swept up in whatever Octavia is doing, trying his best to dissuade her from making mistakes along the way. What I don’t see happening is Bellamy getting through to Blodreina. I suspect there will be political in-fighting between those close to Blodreina and Bellamy. He might only have his sister’s well-being at the forefront of his mind now, especially if he sees she’s losing her soul to this Red Queen role she’s carved out for herself.
How Bell and Clarke figure into this war and what side(s) they come down on will likely lead to more juicy conflict. I’m here for it. You know I love this shit. I may scream obscenities at my TV while watching some of this shit play out, but that’s PASSION, folks.
No, For Reals Though, What In the Ever-Lovin’ Fuck Happened in the “Dark Year”?!

Deathwatch 2018
From week to week, I’m ranking characters by likelihood two die in two buckets: gonna die and long shots. Dead characters of note are in the “May We Meet Again” category.
Not a lot of movement on my Deathwatch lists, but just a bit of solidifying of my gut instincts. Kane almost moved up, but I’d say he and Abby and neck and neck. They’re both hot messes, let’s be honest. I love Kabby, but they’ve seen better days.

Jaha – he was number 1 on my Sure Bet to die board, though I take no pleasure in being right…it was a sorta easy read based on social media. Jaha was an interesting, complex, often infuriating figure in this universe, so RIP.
Raven Reyes Nookie Watch 2018
Welcome back to Raven Reyes Nookie Watch 2018! Along with Deathwatch 2018, this is a recurring feature of upmost importance. It’s all about the nookie!
No nookie was acquired this episode, but we had a long-distance meet cute with Shaw. Hackers trying to hack and counter-hack one another may not be your cup of flirt tea, but it’s as close as Raven’s got to foreplay in six years. WE’LL TAKE IT.

Parting Thoughts
Slarke is my ride or die ship – that’s Clarke + soap. I’m concerned because she’s starting to look a bit grungy.
Where the rest of Spacekru and Madi at? I guess still over in Eden, which worries me now that Prisonkru has claimed it as theirs.
“No no no no no…you just opened Pantera’s Box!” – Nick Miller. I’ll miss you, New Girl.
I’m fuckin’ in love with Murphy’s hair.
Can someone help Raven with her ponytail? Those two long strands of stray hair make her look like an anime character.
WHERE IS NIYLAH?! I hope Wonkru didn’t eat her.
I already miss McCreary’s beanie.
Like, Miller calling Octavia “Blodreina” was weird, right? It’s not just me?
Do you think the Eligius III is still out there somewhere?
You’re goddamn right I used a Teddy Perkins GIF in this review. If I can’t sleep after seeing that Atlanta episode, you’re not either.
The dark year, tho…WHAT IS IT?!

FINAL VERDICT!
“Pandora’s Box”: 9.0 out of 10 people bursting into pink mist…ewwww!
There are some The 100 reviewers/recaps/writers you should absolutely be reading, and I offer them up for your enjoyment; I have no affiliation with any of them, save for being a fan:
Selina Wilken – a mix of passionate fandom and truly professional journalism.
Erin Brown – unfairly beautiful writing. Like seriously, stop being so good.
McKenzie Morrell – recapping her damn face off and great interviews with the cast!
Toni_watches – piss your goddamn pants hilarious photo recaps.
Jo Garfein – great fandom charity auctions.
Disclosure: this is my own indie site. This is on my time, my dime. Becho is endgame.
Several months later…
You are Wonkru or you are the enemy of Wonkru. Choose.
