do y’all understand how much I had to restrain myself upon learning that my 51 year old coworker and her husband were avid supernatural watchers circa 2005-2011

Dean kicking cas out of the bunker is such a tragic and heartbreaking scene to me. Not just because of how upset dean and cas are about it, but because of the opportunity lost.
Cas has always been a very independent solving his own problems kinda character, to a detrimental degree. In season 5 it was looking for god, on his own. In season 6 it was working with crowley to open purgatory, on his own. In season 8 it was deciding that it was best for dean to stay away from him and then keeping the angel tablet and then deciding to trust and work with metatron, on his own. But here he was in season 9, human and vulnerable, and he realized "I cant do this alone, I need help"
And then you have dean, who has been reaching out to cas and wanting him to stay for several seasons now, always foiled by cas' hot girl activities, and he FINALLY has cas wanting to stay. Finally gets to keep him safe and with him. He can show him that "Yes, its ok to ask for help. We're your family, we'll help you. Of course you can stay."
And then he can't. And even though this is resolved, and cas forgives dean because he understands, and they're ok, this was an opportunity to break the pattern they've found themselves in that they never get back. A pattern they never really break.

sam’s life is like a possession john hands over to dean right before he dies with the words ‘save him or kill him’. sure dean has always protected sam, always cared for sam, but in that moment dean inherits sam. all decisions about sam become dean’s, just like before all decisions about sam were supposed to be john’s <3 has he ever had a scrap of autonomy in his life. has anyone ever thought he deserved it

Deep down, i believe the two brothers are both protagonists, and that's a given fact, but i have another more comprehensive reason Sam is the protagonist.
I dont wanna delve into it, but it's something along the lines that Dean has always existed as an ultimate extension of Sam. His standing within the narrative is that of a soldier, not a leader; he exists to protect (sam) and constantly needs an external drive (which sam fills) to do anything.
Dean is also heavily biased and prejudiced. He is not really a protagonist for a story who'd lead/take all under his wing bc he wouldn't. He is definitely a protagonist in Sam's life but not in the supernatural story.
He doesn't hold the axis of the general narrative as Sam does, and as he does hold Sam's.
Yea they both dont make the best selfless protags but Dean is by far the lesser chivalrous out of them, he is also unwilling to take that burden canonly, he HATES taking care of other people his role as a soldier/guardian has always kinda just extended to Sam and ended there that's why he says there's no me if there ain't no you to Sam. Dean IS the ultimate extension of Sam. Without Sam, he ends.

Okay can we talk about how ugly the bracelet Dean made for Rory is? I can’t be the only one who thinks this. Like poor girl had to wear that leather strap for two and a half seasons and it never matched a single one of her outfits.

i have a lot of thoughts about ian mckinley from final destination 3. i do think he sort of has an act he puts on right from the beginning, but it’s more of just a "pretends to be edgy/not care" thing to fit being goth and emo, and i’m also guilty of that hahaha. he can't even pretend to be apathetic about erin though. it’s clear how much he loves her.
and then erin dies. right in front of him. proving the death's list thing he had been cynical about. and ian just breaks wide open. he can't act uncaring anymore. and i think that here he decides if he’s going to die anyway, he might as well make himself into the villain. "erin isn’t alive anymore, so what’s the point in doing something else?" is what he thinks.
when he follows wendy to the tricentennial, when he points and yells and blames her, even the bloody middle finger he gives when he dies, it's all an act, carefully rehearsed.
and the way his voice gets high and he gestures and puts out his arms as he dies? it calls to mind jd. and we know what i think about jd and his act.

I think there is something interesting to Sam saying “I chose this life. I chose hunting” every time Mary brings up a world without hunting and hunters.
Sam in season 12 doesn’t necessarily want to stop hunting, he’s accepted it as part of his life. Idk gives me more reason not to like how the finale concluded his story.
