I'm just a girl. But honestly I always cover the cover page if it looks a little too obvious or I would rather read it on my kindle.

Imagine, if you will, you attend a party. At this party there are chips and salsa. Now, you've had chips, you've had salsa. Let's say you even enjoy chips and salsa. Or maybe, you've never had it before, maybe you've just had the taste expertly described to you, so that you know if you had it, you'd like it. But you've never heard of this brand of chips, and the salsa is in an unbranded bow. "The chips are an off brand," the host assures you, "they were inspired by a main brand of chips, one of your favorite brands, and the salsa is homemade." My favorite brand of chips, but an off brand, and homemade salsa? They must be good, you think to yourself. But you're feeling cautious so you try a singular chip. It's not bad, it could be better, could be worse, but it sort of tastes like... nothing. So you think to yourself, ah I must need to dip the chip in the salsa to fully understand and see if it tastes better. So you do, you dip the chip in the salsa and take a bite. However, despite your hypothesis it tastes like.... nothing. You feel the texture of the food, yet there is no taste. You're confused, unsure, so you take another chip and dip it in more sauce. Still nothing. No taste. You pause for a moment to listen to conversations around the room. You overhear a conversation between one group. They talk about how delicious the chips and salsa are, and say that they must simply have more. Curious as to what you're missing, you take another bite. Nothing. On the other side of the room, there are people loudly conversing saying that those who eat the chips and salsa are subjecting themselves to their own abuse and are perverted immoral beings. Some talk about how they would never dare try the chips and salsa let alone learn about it. Others have learned about it and even tried it, and were absolutely repulsed by the taste, wondering how any "normal" person could enjoy such a taste. Annoyed by the oddity of this opinion, you continue to eat, yet the chips and salsa taste of nothing. You wonder at the ingredients, even inspired by your favorite chips. How can this taste of nothing? How can the wonderful ingredients that you know go into chips and salsa taste of nothing? Surely I must keep eating them to understand. You dip and you eat and dip and eat and dip and eat until your plate is wiped clean. You have successfully ate a plate of chips and salsa, the thing that you set out to do. You expect to feel the welcoming wave of accomplishment wash over you, yet you still neither understand what either side of this party is saying. Yet they continue to argue and talk amongst themselves. Others have also now finished their plate, and speak on how good their chips and salsa were, while others are still loudly speaking about the immorality and perverseness of those who did enjoy the chips and salsa. You are confused, filled, yet somehow empty, still wanting more. The host brings out a second bag of chips and more homemade salsa from a different batch. Surely there must be more that I'm missing here, you think to yourself. I've had the first chips and salsa, I simply must try the second chips and salsa and see if they are any different. I simply must understand what is happening here. And so you prepare yourself for more, maybe they will taste like nothing, maybe this time they won't. But you've resolved yourself to find out one way or another. This has been my experience with Fifty Shades Of Grey.

Fifty Shades Of Grey, The Onion movie review (movies, news, 2015)
.
10th anniversary
Tumblr media
The cinematic adaption of the BDSM romance novel that became a worldwide sensation was released on this day, February 13th, 2015.
(Seriously, this book series was so popular even Costco was carrying it. I remember seeing 4 foot by 4 foot pallets full of each book for sale there.)
I can't say much about the movie myself as I've never been able to sit through it.
(Which I guess does say something, as I've sat through a lot of absolute garbage movies.)
So, on the occasion of the movie's 10th anniversary, here's what The Onion's movie critic Peter K. Rosenthal, who could sit through it, had to say.
youtube
.
.
As it is also the 10th anniversary of this insightful, and in all ways serious, film critique, I'll be including a transcript of the review, sans punctuation. (Mostly in case the original review ever gets yeeted off YouTube.)

Today i watched "Fifty Shades of Grey" (2015) Erotica/Romance
My friend and I are on the hunt for good-bad movies so we watched this and it was... mmmeh. It doesn't live up to it's reputation at all. The romance is bad yes, but it's nether painful nor funny. sort of amusing in places, mostly boring. my freind and i talked throh a lot of it. The sex scenes (like a quarter of the movie) would have been hot if Ana seemed at all into it. She just tolerated it for the most part and it was boring. the love interest is creepy and unsexy and both he and Ana were idiots. all the charecters were idiots actualy. the entire ending was so stupid. the cinematography was quite good thoh. good use of color, light and shadow throuought. I don't think this was good-bad enough to make me wanna watch the sequels.
lame 5/10

Throwback Thursday, Fandom Edition: Fifty Shades of Dollhouse
I have always understood and will always understand why a lot of people didn’t like Dollhouse; it’s a flawed show that still managed to push a lot of my narrative buttons perfectly.  I’m glad that I gave it another chance in 2015, several years after the premiere had failed to impress me, and even though I didn’t find a particularly busy fandom community, I’m still happy with the fic that I wrote, and I had a lot of fun sharing my episode reactions and ideas for crossovers with @ellekess, who had encouraged me revisit the show in the first place.  (My appreciation for Enver Gjokaj, whom I’d recently seen and adored in Agent Carter, also played a part in renewing my interest.)
One of my favorite variations on “what if that character from another fictional universe altogether was secretly an Active?” sprung from a cultural phenomenon that had taken over the world after Dollhouse ended but before I started writing about it.  Although my knowledge of Fifty Shades of Grey was almost entirely secondhand, I knew just enough about Ana Steele’s characterization (or lack thereof) to conclude that if her personality was designed to fulfill a wealthy, controlling douchebag’s fantasy, it would explain a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Echo and Priya ask Ana if Christian is home, she assumes that they’re his vengeful exes.
Tumblr media
If you’ve seen Dollhouse, you might be able to guess that the question is, “Are you ready for your treatment?”

Hey Mac! Do you have any crip books or resource recs for crip sex/sexuality?
Feel free to delete if you're uncomfortable answering :]
do i ever! i actually did an essay for my master’s in disability studies on the topic of disabled people’s access to sex so a lot of these are sources from that (feel free to dm me for my paper!) & others are things i’ve collected for leisure (hah)
i’m bolding my favorites and italicizing ones i haven’t read but have been recommended / have on my list; as with everything, having read a piece + recommending it is not an uncritical endorsement, & i have various contentions with all of these pieces ranging from minor nitpicking to outright disagreement.
feel free to send an ask or dm if you want my thoughts on a particular work or need help obtaining a pdf!

Hey lovely. Do you think when Sam gets a girlfriend she will be attacked by some fans for being his girlfriend?
Oh, you sweet innocent lamb. The sad answer is YES.
Every woman Sam has dated, including his longest girlfriends, Abbie Salt (1 year 2015) and Mackenzie Mauzy (2 years 2016-2018) have been mercilessly attacked and bullied by Extreme Shippers, who still think Sam and Cait should be, or are together. Extreme Shippers' modus operandi has always been the same when a new woman enters Sam's life: leave hate comments on her social media, create fake accounts attacking her on social media, contact her family, friends, employers, ex-boyfriends and harass them, make up lies, pretend to be someone from their past, and then say horrible things about them. It's LITERALLY the same thing every time. It's like they have a blueprint or something...or they share the same demented brain. Extreme Shippers will deny this, but it is well documented on my blog and other blogs, with CONCRETE PROOF, that identifiable Extreme Shippers have engaged in this terrible behavior. Not to mention, it is also illegal to engage in cyber bullying.
Soooo, given that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior, I'd say it's 100 % guaranteed that if Sam gets into another serious relationship, they will both be harassed by Extreme Shippers. Luckily, Sam's SANE fans support him, and the women he dates. And we have no problem calling out the assholes in this fandom aka Extreme Shippers.
And I don't hold out hope this assholery will change even after Outlander is over. If you look at other fandoms that have shippers, for example the Fifty Shades of Grey and Twilight fandoms, they still have shippers pining over Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. And Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, when all four of them are in long term relationships not with their costars. And the Damie and Robsten shippers are STILL being jerks even years and years later.
At least the numbers will dwindle once Outlander is over because there won't be anymore Outlander related events to "swoon" over Sam and Cait being in the same room. But, the truly delusional will never give up. Never. Sad, but true.
Thanks for stopping by, Anon!
