Yesterday the UC held a mass wedding ceremony at its complex in Korea.  The Yomiuri reports that 993 of the roughly 1,600 people married that day were Japanese, and were expected to donate substantial sums to the church. [source]

These mass wedding ceremonies bring together church members from across the world, most of whom have never met each other, and assign them church member spouses. This often leads to very terrible situations.

Although the above-linked Yomiuri article does not say so, past reports have indicated that the Unification Church expects Japanese to pay exorbitantly higher marriage fees than Korean participants in its marriage ceremonies.

Ex-church members have said that Japanese women were taught they should be happy with any spouse the church selects for them because they had a responsibility to atone for the historical sin of the Japanese empire's comfort women system.

NTV's Bankisha aired a report about the mass wedding and grand opening of the palace yesterday. The temple is said to have cost 50 billion yen ($370 million). A former UC official says special pressure was put on Japanese to make excessive donations [Video of report here]

Does Anti-Doping Create an Even Playing Field?

You wouldn’t cheat in your school tests, or your music exams, so why would you cheat in sport?

Doping in sport with athletes taking banned substances to improve their performance remains a problem. There are many banned supplements such as stimulants and hormones to help your body to recover quicker, build muscle and increase energy allowing training and performance at a higher standard.  

Doping tests were first introduced in 1966 to cycling and football world championships and subsequently introduced to the 1968 Grenoble winter Olympics and Mexico summer Olympics. From 1970 onwards most international federations have taken steps to introduce drug-testing in an attempt to create an even playing field. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was established in 1999 with 3 criteria for banning a particular substance: “performance enhancement, health risk and being perceived against the spirit of sport.”  

Athletes give up huge amounts of time, sacrifice career and social life to spend countless hours in the gym and on the track. Such sacrifices are willingly made to become the best athlete they can be and to compete at the highest level. But sports fall into disrepute when other athletes seek an unfair advantage by taking performance enhancing drugs in the worst cases meaning drugs cheats taking medals over hard working athletes.

WADA aims to combat this by banning an athlete caught knowingly using a proscribed substance from competing within the sport or any other sport that follows WADA rules for 4 years. It is the athlete’s responsibility to check whether medicines or supplements are allowed and ignorance is not a defence as WADA can be asked and medicines or proteins can be checked by visiting www.globaldro.com For example the British skier Alain Baxter legally used a common nasal inhaler but the over-the-counter version he bought when in the USA contained methamphetamine, a banned substance. Baxter was found not guilty of a deliberate offence but was still stripped of his medal. WADA also introduced a ‘whereabouts’ rule where an athlete must say where they will be for 1 hour every day to allow testing without advance warning.

Despite advances in drugs-testing and 35 WADA credited laboratories making 277,928 analyses, in 2009 there were 5,610 results that showed “adverse’ or a-typical results”. In addition there are masking hormones which make it increasingly hard for laboratories to detect prohibited substances.

Drug use can affect the health of the athlete, the reputation of their sponsors and impacts on their fans who lose a role model. It may effect participation in that sport and creates hostility between athletes and even countries where drug use can be state-sponsored. However, with the rewards of sporting success increasing, the temptation to cheat remains. For example cyclist Lance Armstrong was rightly stripped of his 7 Tour De France titles and received a lifetime ban from WADA as a ‘serial cheat’ who led “the most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping programme that sport has ever seen”. Sprinter Tyson Gay tested positive for a banned substance and was stripped of his Olympic silver medal and suspended until June 2014.

The intention of anti-doping is certainly to create a level playing field. However, while some athletes and coaches believe the potential rewards (with highly lucrative sponsorships and prize money) outweigh the risk of being caught it is inevitable that cheating will continue. There will be incentives for labs to create drugs that are harder to identify and the continuation of an “arms race” in drugs in sport. It is vital, therefore, that alongside more effective testing sports bodies further tilt that risk/reward balance by increasing punishments for those who are caught.

47 couples of the Unificationist faith community offered their marriages and future families to God this past Saturday evening during the Holy Marriage Blessing (Satellite) Ceremony in Las Vegas this past Saturday. Standing alongside their peers, family and friends, the couples vowed “to become a couple for eternity and build ideal families.”

For Yujin Angolio, one of the young brides at the Las Vegas satellite ceremony, that commitment is for a larger vision. “It’s not just one day or one moment. This is an eternal commitment you are making,” says Yujin. “Having the right intentions in terms of what you want to go into and realizing that you are doing it for something that’s bigger than yourself. That motivation can help you with your eternal commitment with each other.”

A total of 8,000 couples simultaneously attended the main ceremony in Gapyeong, South Korea and in other satellite ceremonies around the world.

As core tenants of the Unificationist faith, abstinence from sex before marriage and not dating are highly encouraged in the youth to help prepare them for receiving the Holy Marriage Blessing later in life. However, over the last few years, there has been a steady rise in couples from “non-traditional” backgrounds choosing to participate in the Holy Marriage Blessing Ceremony, such as previously divorced couples who are re-marrying or those who were distant from the faith community before. It is a testament to the redemptive power of this sacrament.

Some people who grew up in the church have chosen to date outside of the Unificationist faith community but found that they were dissatisfied with the quality of those relationships. They later chose to find a life partner within the faith, because of shared values and the Holy Marriage Blessing’s emphasis on commitment.

“I explored dating outside of the movement,” says Jamie Christian, a groom at the Las Vegas satellite ceremony. “Dating was a game with a lot of unspoken rules. It took a lot of time to really have deeper conversations and to talk about values, hopes and expectations in life with whoever it is you’re seeing. The amount of depth that you gain from a relationship, from this [Blessing] process is so much faster and so much more intentional than traditional dating.”

Many of the young couples in Saturday’s ceremony are children of Unificationist members who also received the Holy Marriage Blessing decades ago. Inspired by their parents’ commitment grounded in faith, a new generation is inheriting the tradition of marrying not just for themselves, but for the sake of building God’s family. A large number of couples go through a family-guided, intentional engagement process before committing to the Holy Marriage Blessing.

“It wasn’t just our parents that helped us. We also had many friends and supporters that helped us get to where we are,” shares Kentoku Kato, another young groom. “I think that being part of the Blessing Ceremony is like a culmination of their hearts and investments and efforts. We want to be able to honor that with this Blessing Ceremony.”

Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the leader of the global Unificationist faith community, officiated the ceremony. Her benediction prayer to God over the thousands of newlyweds asked that “All the 8,000 couples receiving the Blessing today…grow as Blessed Couples that [God] can take pride in.”

Mother Moon, often referred to as “the Mother of Peace,” is one of the few (if any) female leaders of a global religious movement. Her leadership style of the Unification movement for the past 11 years has been different from her husband’s 58 years at the movement’s forefront, but no less effective. She commands the respect of current and former heads of state and international civic leaders, including Ban Ki-Moon and Waris Dirie. Although a religious leader, her influence has touched society at large through the hundreds of charitable organizations and projects founded across industries, including culture and arts, education, business, sports, and philanthropy.

The Holy Marriage Blessing has been at the forefront of cultural diversification in the U.S. Cross-cultural marriage was fairly uncommon for most of American history, even as a nation that has long been considered a “melting pot” of diversity. After the Supreme Court decision in Loving vs. Virginia (1967) passed, interracial marriages began to steadily rise over the next decades. While there are multiple factors that contribute to the occurrences of cross-cultural marriage, such as overseas military postings or changes in legal precedent, the “Unification Church’s” intercultural and interracial mass weddings have been a major contributing factor in destigmatizing cross-cultural marriage. Even racially homogeneous nations such as Korea are now seeing cross-cultural marriages on the rise.

The long-standing tradition of the Holy Marriage Blessing dates back to 1960, with the marriage of the Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, co-founders of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, colloquially known as the “Unification Church.” They have since blessed millions of couples in marriage for the sake of world peace. Unificationists around the world are proud of the impact the Marriage Blessing has had in bringing about cultural, racial, and religious unity, none more so than the couples participating in Saturday’s ceremony.

Mose Durst sat in the living room of a spectacular church-owned home in one of Berkeley's swankiest neighborhoods, just below the Claremont Hotel. It has an Asian flair, panoramic views of San Francisco Bay and the Rev. Sun Myung Moon looking down from a picture above the hearth.

Since the 1970s, Durst has been at the right hand of Moon, the Korean-born evangelist, conservative political activist and self-proclaimed messiah.

Durst has served as the Northern California leader, and the national president, of the Unification Church. Now he's back in the Bay Area, thinking about his legacy, and the future of his church.

On this afternoon, Durst is feeling contrite. He admits that the Moonies made mistakes in the 1970s, when they sent out an overzealous army of tireless recruiters. But it's time, he says, to give his church another chance.

"People perceive us as a bad religious movement, and they isolate us more," he said. "If you think we're evil, let's sit down and talk. Let's find common ground. Otherwise, you force us into a cul-de-sac, like at Jonestown or Waco."

For years, the Moonies have struggled to make the leap from "cult" to "religion," to win credibility among political and religious leaders in the United States and around the world.

Through such publications as the Washington Times, a church-affiliated, conservative daily newspaper in the nation's capital, and through alliances with priests and pastors across the theological spectrum, Moon and company have spent a fortune courting the opinion-makers of church and state.

Now the church is looking closer to home, at the next generation of Western converts.

Durst confesses that, in the early years of Moon's American mission, church leaders erred in assuming God would provide for the children of devotees. The first kids born into the movement, he concedes, did not always get the parental attention they deserved.

"We were trying to build the church up locally - we were hot to build the kingdom," he said. "There were times in the early years when the hardest thing was building a church, while being responsible for your family. You wanted to be part of a spiritual community. People would put their kids in a nursery. When it was not done well, there were all kinds of shortcomings.

"We made mistakes," he said. "We did dumb things."

Durst says there are about 10,000 members of the Unification Church in the United States. He concedes that the number is much lower than figures the church reported in earlier years.

"That's right," he said with a smile. "I no longer lie."

Worldwide, the Moonies claim 3 million members, with most of them living in Korea and Japan. Some scholars, however, say the actual number of committed adherents may be closer to 250,000.

Nevertheless, Moon has built one of the wealthiest religious movements in the world, with extensive business interests and land holdings in Asia, South America and the United States.

Today, the movement has reorganized into more familiar religious congregations. It has embraced the nuclear family and refocused its efforts on passing its teachings onto the next generation.

The new focus can be seen at the largest Unification Church congregation in Northern California, the Bay Area Family Church, housed in a nondescript building in San Leandro.

At a recent Sunday service, a band with guitar and drums played upbeat music while about 150 worshipers, a mix of Asians and Caucasians, found seats on rows of red padded pews.

There were a lot of children running around the complex, which contains a K- 8 school, the Principled Academy, for 125 children.

The communal days are over. Most Moonies live in their own homes, with their own children, and work outside jobs.

"We still proselytize," said the Rev. Bento Leal, associate minister at the San Leandro church, "but it's different when you have a house full of kids and a full-time job."

Many of the families in this congregation were brought together in a mass marriage ceremony in New York's Madison Square Garden in 1982, when Moon presided over the weddings of 2,075 couples.

Not only does Moon preside over these ceremonies, he picks the spouses for his devotees and advises them as to what sexual positions to assume when they consummate their marriages.

Although these prescribed marriage rites sound strange to the uninitiated, they are a key part of Unification Church theology.

Moon teaches that he and his wife are the "True Parents" of a new spiritual lineage born without original sin. This spiritual status is purportedly passed on to "blessed children" born from Moonie marriages.

According to a church survey released last year, 82 percent of the couples brought together in Madison Square Garden are still married, and still consider themselves members of the Unification Church.

They have had an average of 2.5 children per couple.

Because the oldest kids born from that highly publicized union are still teenagers, the church cannot yet say how many will keep the Moonie faith.

"The real test comes when they are in college and out on their own," Leal said.

Among the tested will be Christopher Barker, born in Manhattan to Moonie parents in 1983.

During the 1970s, his father, Garry, who had grown up in the Catholic Church and attended parochial school, joined the Moonies and started a coffeehouse, Aladdin's, on College Avenue in Oakland. They had great New York cheesecake and served it up with a dose of Unification Church theology.

Barker and Durst were part of "the Oakland family," which produced some of Moon's most zealous proselytizers and fund-raisers.

Recruits harvested from the streets of San Francisco or the University of California at Berkeley campus were whisked up to an isolated church compound in Mendocino County for days of "love-bombing" and alleged "brainwashing."

It was the height of the cult wars of the 1970s, a battle over religious liberty and personal freedom that would see its horrific crescendo in the South American jungle with the murder-suicide in 1978 of 914 followers of the Rev. Jim Jones.

Christopher Barker's mother, Renate, was approached by Moonie missionaries on the street in Munich in 1971, when she was 20 years old. Three days later, Renate joined the Unification Church.

"My mother was very upset," Renate recalled. "She thought I'd been drugged or something. My parents tried to kidnap me, but I was very dedicated."

What attracted her to Moon?

"I was always very religious," she said. "I'd studied the Bible and Oriental philosophy, but I looked at people who went to church, and their lives didn't change. It didn't have an impact on their lives."

Renate came to the United States in 1973 with 70 other European missionaries.

Their mission was simple - to save the world.

"Rev. Moon felt America was so important to the whole world, we thought that if we saved America, we would save the world."

Moon matched Renate and Barker in 1979, but they communicated only through letters for the next three years. They were married in Moon's mass marriage ceremony of 1982. Today, they live in Hayward with their three children, Christopher, 17; Amalia, 15; and John, 11.

During a recent Sunday service, the family stood outside the Moonie church in San Leandro. Christopher was asked what it was like to be a "blessed child."

"My understanding is we were born without original sin, since they were matched by the True Father," he replied. "We are the culmination of all that work, and it's up to us to carry on what they want us to do."

Part of that legacy is no sex before marriage and agreeing to a union arranged by the Rev. Moon.

His sister is saving herself for that day.

"You are waiting for that one person, and not wasting your love on other people," Amalia said. "We believe in total fidelity in your marriage, so you're not comparing them with other boyfriends you've had before."

Her older brother also has vowed to stay chaste until he marries.

"Dating is kind of like practicing for divorce," he said. "When you're done with that person, and when problems come up, you dump them and go on to someone else."

Both teenagers attended the Unification Church's Principled Academy through the eighth grade, and are students at Bishop O'Dowd, a Catholic high school in Oakland.

"I haven't told anyone there that I'm a Unificationist, or a Moonie," Christopher said. "My friends can see I'm not a normal teenager who has girlfriends and everything."

Renate Barker said she and her husband have learned lessons from the child- rearing mistakes of early Moonie parents.

"In those days, the thought was that the children would just automatically turn out good, just by God talking to them or something. We thought we didn't really have to take care of them. It was naive."

Garry says only time will tell if the Unification Church is a forgotten cult, or a "religious movement with legs."

"All religions start out like this," he said. "The proof is going to be three, four, or five generations from now. When Rev. Moon dies, nobody knows what will happen. That will be the big test."

The Barrytown Property is being sold off for $15 million

Hak Ja Han is closing the operation as we know it in the US, as the members who joined in the 70s are passing on leadership, and too many are passing away too. Perhaps the FFWPU in the US will continue to import members from all over the world, and maintain and a mostly American bureaucracy with key Korean leaders at the top as continental leaders, and other similar positions. 

The question is... who is looking to buy a $15 million school in Red Hook, NY?

Not exactly a fixer-upper: Unification Seminary in Barrytown up for sale (2018)

Got a spare $20 million on hand? Ready to finally fork over for those 260 acres with nine buildings, gorgeously overlooking the Hudson River and distant Catskill Mountains? For a cool $16,750,000, down from the original asking price of $17,995,000, you can have the former Massena estate in Barrytown, originally owned by the illustrious Livingston family, later bought by John D. Rockefeller so he could build a monastery for the Christian Brothers there, and still later sold to the Unification Church, then led by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, so he could start a Theological Seminary for his huge enterprise in the 1970s. That’s who is selling it now.

And an extra $2 million could go a long way towards making it into whatever one wanted.

“We have to find someone wealthy. We’re thinking in terms of museums, wellness centers, schools,” said Victoria Fischer of the property, being one of two brokers at Marcus & Milchap in Westchester County handling its sale since late Spring. “The place is in great shape; they’re still using the building.”

Fisher spoke about other large properties in the general neighborhood. Edgewater is a storied estate overlooking the Hudson that’s regained its old glory in recent years, after being owned for a spell by a much-younger Gore Vidal. Rokeby, also known as La Bergerie, is the former Astor estate a little to the south, run by the Aldrich family for years as a shared creative bastion where, among other things, New York City’s annual Halloween parade through Greenwich Village gets plotted out each summer and fall. Sylvania, smaller than the rest, remains in a storied family whose name shall go unmentioned; George and Susan Quasha maintain their long-running Station Hill compound for publishing and other artistic endeavors in what could be construed as “downtown” Barrytown (a crossroads of buildings, as it were).

“I’m not one to look behind I know that times must change/ But over there in Barrytown they do things very strange,” sang Steely Dan in their song “Barrytown,” off their 1974 album Pretzel Logic.

“The Banks are lined with elegant villas — thought it was the consummation of Earthly Bliss to live in one of those palaces, on such a Noble River, under such a Government,” wrote a young poet named Davidson in the early 19th century, who later grew Edgewater into a grand mansion while some of the old money was running from the area once a railroad was put in right up the banks of the Hudson, breaking their fabled views (and quiet).

When asked about the Unification Seminary’s largest neighbor, Bard College in nearby Annandale-on-Hudson — which recently bought the historic Montgomery Place estate just to the north of what was once Massena, to be used for events and environmental studies programs, among other things — Fisher said her company has reached out to the college. She added that they said they “were not interested at this point.”

What the realtors have been getting to date, she added, were “nibbles and bites, basically from people who want to make sure they have the money to do what they want.”

She mentioned the recent sale of a large convent, formerly the Kenwood Academy and Doane Stuart School in Albany, that sold to developers looking to create condominiums (Doane Stuart moved to a new location within the past decade). What she didn’t mention was that sale ended up one third under its original asking price.

In Barrytown, meanwhile, the Unification Church property includes a 120,000 square foot main building, shaped like an “H” with an updated “upper” half and older, mid-century-style dorms on the lower half. Ancillary buildings add up to another 150,000 square feet. There’s a chapel, library, dining halls, kitchens. There are offices, classrooms, guest rooms, an infirmary, a two-story gym, a 400-seat auditorium, and a 100-seat lecture hall.

“The Unification people feel as if they’re cutting off their left arm, selling the seminary,” Fisher added. They want to keep it but already have a lot of expensive real estate in midtown Manhattan.”

The Unification Church was founded by Rev. Moon in South Korea in the 1950s, following the Korean Conflict. It began spreading in the United States throughout the 1960s, after which Moon moved stateside in 1971. The Barrytown property was bought in 1974, and eventually the church and Rev. Moon bought numerous other properties, including the old New Yorker Hotel on 34th Street in Manhattan. They founded the conservative Washington Times, started matching couples and marrying couples from his followers in mass ceremonies at Madison Square Garden and other arena venues, and Dr. Moon was jailed for tax evasion for several years. He died in 2012.

Back in 1994, when the 25th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival took place in Saugerties, a number of key acts staying on the east side of the Hudson, including Bob Dylan, were flown by helicopter to the Winston Farm concert grounds from a landing area at the seminary.
