Gareth is hardly even a side character tbh LOL. He got more speaking time in RD and it helped my perception of who he is, but for sure, he's one of the rare few where you just really don't have anything to go by. Of course, I'm speaking more about characters with lots of lines and who aren't a very very side character.

But yeah, Gareth is... a very funny exception LOL.

And I'm glad to hear that! Half my rants are for me personally to rant about my beloved favorite FE character (I'm sorry Dimitri but you're getting a tie with him, no exceptions), and half for people to recognize he's really not Fandom!Shinon, but Shinon. There's a very large giant gap between Fandom!Shinon and actual Shinon.

Also, as far as being mean to Ike, I prefer that quite a lot tbh. I hate when characters end up like Byleth, where everyone just adores them for no explainable reason (even in Byleth's supports, there are times characters openly express that they feel safe/happy/comfortable around them and "don't know why", and it's just because it's the player pandering. I think only Dimitri and Sylvain truly properly averted that and I can definitely say it's not a coincidence I ended up loving them so much).

The thing is, I don't hate Byleth. I hate that they're a character that everyone adores for literally, as admitted, uncertain reasons. Ike doesn't get that kind of "wow I don't even know him but I love him". It happens a lot because he's a good person, but remember the end of the game? Naesala very much still has not taken to Ike as a person. He says Ike can visit, but not without paying well. He doesn't view Ike as this sweet godly man who took care of dear Reyson and Leanne. He's still hesitant.

Shinon, similarly, does not like Ike because he always got everything handed to him - another reason his supports with Janaff are fucking important LMAO. He actually confesses his reasons for "hating" Ike, which I'd argue it's probably not true hatred but just... an aversion to Ike's circumstances and behavior and a definite strong dislike of him. He puts up with him though, and that's pretty important given that he DID once leave and not only came back, but never considered leaving again after that.

So back to Shinon in specific, you can infer plenty from his lines knowing that. He hates Ike because he's given everything. He gets mad at Ike for not wanting things like glory and fame, but then he ends up in that situation and takes on that role anyway. Shinon probably had to work for everything he ever had his entire life. He was probably very poor (considering he felt the need to take dead enemies' weapons instead of buying more, he probably considered that they don't have the money for that and is trying to save costs). Seeing someone get everything just handed to him when Shinon and others have worked so much harder for so much longer? It'd piss me off too!

Remember, Ike only started working as a mercenary very recently by the time all this happened. As far as time goes, it all happened in the blink of an eye. Shinon is 27 by late PoR (thanks Janaff supports LMFAO). He's worked 27 years to be able to live comfortably. To just have a decent life. He wants glory and fame because he wants to live comfortably (and probably happily, something he seems to not have had in his life for real at all until around RD's time), and sees nothing wrong in that. He sees nothing wrong with wanting to just live and not have to desperately fight for survival forever.

Ike comes along as a mercenary and suddenly since he's Greil's son and a relatively decent young man (relatively in the sense of he's super ignorant and often pretty rude even if unintentionally, which he admits to in RD), and he just... gets everything. Becomes a beloved hero. Shinon is still a nobody after working so hard his entire life. He has every right to be fuming about that setup.

If you consider the man drinks until he vomits, he probably has a drinking problem to boot, which... would fit in with his anger at his situation and everything around him. All these goody-goody happy people who hardly had to work for anything around him? I'd wanna barf too LOL. Also, Shinon does not hate Oscar. Oscar is one of the few people he knows personally who has had to live a very similar life. He never really gives Oscar any lip. Probably isn't totally fond of his personality, but doesn't truly hate him. He probably recognizes he's worked hard just to get where he is.

Ike is a great character, yeah, and it's still great having someone just... not like him. No matter how good of a person you are, someone out there will always dislike you. It doesn't make either of them bad people. Shinon just doesn't vibe with him, even if Ike himself really doesn't mind Shinon. And ultimately, all of that patience pays off, because Shinon isn't just indispensable to the group, but he truly finds his place there as a home and not as a temporary living situation as a mercenary (which I've also written about in detail LOL).

As for Shinon as a unit in FE9, I've actually had stellar performance with him! Once he's back up to speed he's pretty much fine, but I put Gamble on him and offered him a Killer Bow and... yeah. 100 percent crit rates are fascinating if he hits (which his skill helps with). I remember being so awed by that crit rate the first time I ever saw it that I had to pause to take a breather.

I love characters who have depth and a lot to think about, so... I am not surprised Shinon ended up where he ended up. In the last two-ish years or so at this point, he also went from favorite Tellius character to just... favorite FE character because he's the whole package. Awesome character, detailed character, consistent character, perfect unit in RD (support him with Janaff in both games then put them side by side, I dare you. They're absolute TERRORS), and a great unit to rework in PoR once you get him back (and I recognize that's around the time your base units should be promoting so they probably planned it that way with his lower level when you get him back, because most of your promoted units would likely be around the same level).

on that previous post's tags note, the fact that anyone would look at a Tellius character and reduce them to a single trait with no other characterization is absolutely bonkers to me. the fact that anyone can play a Tellius game and walk out being like "wow that character had nothing to them except this one aspect about them" is completely bonkers to me... but even more so when it's a very recurring character with a very massive range of personality and traits across each conversation.

I think i'd be easily at home in monk -> onmyoji.

Also if you wanted to go there, Butler. which doesnt actually have any generic artwork so youll just have to have this really sad picture of Jakob that the FE wiki thinks is a good picture for the class.

Outside of Fates, i think i'd return to the monk class in it's GBA period :] I'd add sage to this, but there's actually like, no good pics that show off the men's Sage outfit. Saleh's cape is in front of like his whole body. Also, i have no idea if given the opportunity if i'd go sage or summoner....

I'd add kitsune due to my fursona but i feel like thats cheap. + doesnt really fit me much in terms of personality.

You entering a trace and emerging with an age list of (I presume) every FE that you’ve ever played. It happens. I get it. (I do have to point out that Saizo and Kaze are twins, so maybe we split the difference on their estimates? 25? 26?)

Mostly however I am going to be thinking about the 13-year-olds tier. There is such powerful energy there. I don’t know what’s going to happen if you put the three of them in the same room, but I know it will be happening, and there is no force on all the continents that could stop them if they put their mind to something.

I know Sacred Stones is more niche in the fandom but Gerik/Saleh is genuinely one of the cutest ships from that game and I wish it got more traction. Gerik literally jokes that Saleh can make him "blush like a schoolgirl".
