"Ah." Ed could understand not selling the place. It's what he should have done years ago with his own house when his exes left, and found somewhere smaller, but... he liked the quiet of Altadena and the trails into the San Gabriels that practically started in his backyard. ...And perhaps he had hoped some day he wouldn't be quite so alone, even if the thought of having a family of his own terrified him.
"It's not... conventional, but it's quiet, and you don't have to pay rent or a mortgage, which is certainly helpful," he observed. "I can see the sense in that."
Ed turned his head in surprise when Sam shouted to the dog.
...Oh. There was a hidden space behind the Tron machine.
He would have followed Sam out of intrigue, if he had time to think, but admittedly, his reason for sprinting after her, socks muting his footsteps but causing him to slip and have to focus on balancing so he didn't fall on his face, was pure instinct and years of having to scramble to put out Mackey's metaphorical fires every time there was a situation. And this, certainly, was A Situation, even if he wasn't sure what the situation was.
It's only when he reached the bottom of the stairwell that he had time to process that the hidden room behind the Tron cabinet was a creepy basement that was definitely giving him Edgar Allan Poe vibes, like he was either going to walk into a dead body in the room beyond, or he was about to become the spirit that haunted the building.
What he found instead was a literal nightmare.
He skid to a halt barely keeping from falling on his ass, face pale and every muscle in his body going rigid at the sight of the computer-desk in the corner. The last time he'd seen that machine, he'd been four, in what now was Mackey's office. Certainly, he shouldn't have remembered that desk except for the fact that it and his father's disembodied voice coming from the machine--from a program that was somehow even meaner and scarier than his father-- had given him nightmares until he was in high school.
Or for the fact that as far as Ed knew, to this day his father was still furious about losing that desk.
The sight of the laser at the other side of the room, pointed at the chair, didn't help, either, though he quickly realized it was immobile. That was a small comfort.
He would have grabbed Sam and the dog, and dragged them both up the stairs, except his body refused to cooperate.
"Sam..." he said, his voice thin and brittle, and barely audible. "Please tell me that malevolent program isn't on that computer," he all but pleaded.
(Combining: GUEST :  for one muse to offer the other a place to stay. STORM :  for both muses to find shelter from a severe storm. Same universe as prev Ed and Sam rp?)
Sam had been tucked away in the basement of The Arcade, coding on The Grid’s terminal, so she didn’t hear the sound of the rain right away. When she did however it snapped her out of her trance. A jolt of slight panic coursing through her. The bike!
She raced up the stairs, pushing away the TRON machine she had moved back into place behind her so that Marvin didn’t wander in when she was working, and raced past the other covered, but no longer dusty, cabinet machines in the arcade till she was at the door, swiftly unlocking it. She paused under the covered threshold of the entrance when she saw just how much water was falling out of the sky. That was definitely one hell of a storm.
Well. It’s not like she was going anywhere anytime soon.
She flipped her hood up and walked out to the street towards her Dad’s… well her, Ducati now, kicking up the kickstand and grabbing onto the handlebars to walk it under the covered threshold. She lifted her head up when she heard the shuffling of feet and some splashes nearby. At first she didn’t recognize him through the rain until he got a bit closer. She lifted one of her arms, waving it slightly as she called out to be heard over the pounding of raindrops and howling wind.
“Ed! Hey! Over here!”
She rested the Ducati against the wall, still waving with her hand as she held open the door of the arcade to invite him inside.
@iamnoprogram
It was one of those days where Ed couldn't go home. One of the days where he was afraid of what he might do if he left his thoughts to wander. Usually he would stay at the office and code until he passed out at at the keyboard, but his meeting with Mackey earlier that day had been... it had been a lot of things, but certainly not good. Draining, mostly. And for reasons Ed wasn't quite sure of, it brought up old ghosts that Ed still couldn't put to rest. They were the sort of ghosts that made his office, which was normally a refuge, feel downright oppressive.
He'd hoped that a long walk would exhaust him enough that he could go home and pass out as as soon as he got to bed.
He'd been walking for about an hour and a half when the storm hit. It was one of those rare deluges came so suddenly, and so intensely, that LA's near non-existent storm drainage system quickly overflowed and flooded the streets. The kind he'd only seen a handful of times in the twenty-some-odd years he'd lived there.
Between the dark, and the rain fogging up his glasses, he had pocketed the glasses in hopes of preserving them when he inevitably tripped over his feet, and resigned himself to shuffling blindly back toward the tower and his car.
Not that he had any idea whether it would be better to go home or stay at the office.
He hadn't been walking back long when he heard someone calling his name, though it had still been long enough that he was thoroughly drenched, and shivering mildly from the cold. He froze in place on the sidewalk, having to take a moment to identify her by voice, since he was all but entirely blind.
"...Sam?" he asked, then realizing where he was, and that she was the only person likely to be there. He glanced both directions, and, seeing no lights, nor hearing any vehicles (there rarely were; this part of town had been all but abandoned since he was in middle school), shuffled across the street, navigating toward Sam by voice alone.
"Hi Sam," he said awkwardly, stepping under the eaves. "Uh, thanks," he said awkwardly, hesitantly following her into the Arcade.

Been meaning to post this for a while, and keep thinking about it, so for your consideration: Tron Murderbot AU.
Encom is one of the numerous companies out in corporation rim.
They produce a lot of the software that runs everything from space stations and ships to robots, and constructs, and can even be found in augments for humans.
Fcon is another company in corporate rim and a direct competitor with Encom. (Potential for a war or cold war among their colonies?)
GrayCris still exists and is still trying to mine alien remnants.
Preservation Alliance also still exists as a non corporate polity because they seem cool.
The Grid is a non-corporate polity rulled by Kevin Flynn, sort of like a private island that he has as a sanctuary.
Tron '82 AU?
All the programs are constructs???? Probably? Or robots? Probably a mix of everything.
It makes a lot of sense for Tron to be a sec unit actually. Maybe a new sec unit prototype software that Alan was working on? Either way, Alan designed Tron without a governor module.
Sark is a combat unit.
Maybe the laser exists, maybe instead it's human augments to connect to the data feed... Haven't decided yet.
The MCP probably originally started off as a hub system for encoms main port or something but hacked and took over everything on Encom's main station.
It hacks everything that uses Encom's software, gains control of much of corporation rim or maybe just Encoms colonies.
Yeah gonna be real not entirely sure what happens to Flynn instead of being sucked inside a computer here... Maybe he has an augment and the MCP hacks it/pulls his consciousness entirely into the data feed?
...in which case the programs seen in Tron are how the bots perceive themselves in the data feed??? (I think I like this one, but we'll come back to it later)
Anyway same-ish deal: Dillinger steals Flynn's IP, he flees to a small (probably seedy) space station owned by an undisclosed company and tries to hack Encom for evidence that Dillinger stole his stuff.
Will develop this later, but it has a similar outcome of defeating the MCP, realising the programs are more human than they realize
Legacy:
During his reign as Encoms CEO, Flynn buys a planet/steals one from the company for his own purposes, as well as several space stations. These collectively are called the Grid.
The Grid still absolutely still has the fun glow-y effects, partly through a bio luminescent material that grows on Planet Tron.
He also buys the space station he fled to and probably turns it into a resort/casino/arcade type place for people to play videogames.
The planet is named Tron after the prototype SecUnit created by Alan Bradley.
...Which Flynn absolutely stole for his 'digital utopia'
The grid becomes a non-corporate polity lead by Flynn.
It starts out as a sanctuary for "rogue" constructs, bots, etc.
He still creates clu (organic parts cloned from his own DNA???) to govern the grid while he is in charge of Encom.
Somehow this all still remains a secret from everyone else.
Isos are constructs from alien society that used to live on Planet Tron and formed their own society. (The aliens that built them lived in the oceans, and so the isos come from there, but can live both on land and in the sea). The isos are made with the bio luminescent material.
Flynn still treats everything like it's a game, and Clu does not appreciate that.
Same thing happens, Flynn gets stranded on Planet Tron, Clu destroys the Isos and takes over the rest of the Grid.
Somehow Sam finds it, again through some hijinks involving Flynn's arcade/port/resort
Games probably include something like the ones that Murderbot describes where the humans make the SecUnits fight each other.
Not sure what disc equivalent would be here. Probably still discs because they're a cool concept.
...Thoughts about Ed Dillinger Jr in this universe (or the version that is my muse, anyway...)
Is absolutely an augmented human, though he's hacked his augment because paranoia about surveillance and his safety.
Is something of a political refugee at On Encom's main space station though not by official status.
The suspicion is still there because relations to fCon.
Purchases a SecUnit from a third company after the incident where his father tries to kidnap him.
Immediately tells the SecUnit he needs to see it's code with the intention of hacking it's governor module and making it so it can't send data back to the company. (Because he's paranoid about corporate surveillance getting back to his father. Have I mentioned Ed is paranoid about his security?)
SecUnit already hacked its governor module.
SecUnit politely refuses.
Ed refuses to say why he needs to see SecUnit's code because he is not about to let the company know what he's about to do.
Ed's stubbornness wins this round.
SecUnit waits in anxious silence while Ed goes through it's code.
Ed discovers that SecUnit's governor module is already hacked. It takes him a little while to realize SecUnit hacked its governor module.
There is a conversation. They eventually both come clean about their intentions. Ed apologizes for scaring the crap out of SecUnit, but the damage has been done.
Most of everyone else is not happy about the SecUnit following Ed around.
While there is now an understanding, trust is tenuous from both of them until SecUnit eventually saves Ed from an attack by fCon agents that nearly destroys SecUnit and results in corrupted code, and Ed painstakingly fixes their code.
The Incident eventually gets out, which Ed is not happy about. Neither is Encom, for different reasons depending on who you ask.
...Anyway... not sure where I'm going with this, but I think it would be a cool AU.

Note
The Government is already aware of the existence of digital civilization. They actively work to suppress that information to maintain the status quo.
"I- what?" Alan was baffled, because that was not the case last he knew. Last he knew ENCOM was personally trying to make the civilizations as public as possible so they could sell this new technology. That's why fCon bought them out anyway, to test the digital world to its limits.
"I don't know what that has to do with me. I'm just someone who makes the programs. You'll have to talk to the new CEO."

FCON... That’s not exactly how it went...
I remember being a part of FCON, hell I was there when it was just a few corporations, didn’t hold any space in Providence, but damn did we know how to PvP. We even managed to outshine CVA and pets/holders during their Sov drop. We managed to pull together the biggest fleet in short notice and we sure as hell made any opposing force, get a swift kick in the butt out of Providence and it’s surrounding low-sec space.
The video forgets to mention, that FCON after it getting kicked out of Providence during LFA’s - CVA backed plan to invade -A- (Against All Authorities) space, was plagued by carebears and corruption from the top. The plan was idiotic in it’s own right, but FCON unlike others, fought literal tooth and nail for it’s home system 9-F0B.  Shortly after FCON was invited to help in the founding of the greater NC (Northern Coalition). After obtaining that space after all the Ev0ke meta-gaming (Nice TS3 DDOS you pulled there.. #Lame). The alliance CEO ‘Renarri’ was milking every bit of funding out of membership, added on with back-door deals and the prospect of getting his own Avatar class Titan, with the members not even having a fully functional SRP program (Ship Replacement Program). He was finally kicked out by the old vets and all his cohorts of money and time leeching pets.  Afterwards FCON returned to what it was, an alliance that wasn't afraid to being outnumbered even 10 to 1, fought and in most cases won.
Either way; I wonder how FCON is doing these days, hopefully allot better. But I think the video should have focused more on the actual history dating back from patient-zero to present day. FCON’s past is definitely one, that merits a full story. Less propaganda and more facts would've been nice and appreciated.

Unfortunately, Mr. Crown, Mr. Baza, and Ms. Popoff have been digitized into the system without the correction algorithms.
The algorithms were extracted from Ma3a the moment we digitized the team in. I'm afraid there is nothing I can do to save them. If I were to bring them back now, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't return ... well, as they were.

Note
Ed knew, somewhere in the back of his head, that the probability of him getting kidnapped was higher than average. It had happened to him once, when he was in middle school, shortly after his father became CEO of Fcon. Because his father was rich, and controlled the second largest tech giant in the world. And because Edward Dillinger Sr. and Kevin Flynn were enemies. (It wasn't even anyone Flynn knew, just one of his fanatics.)
The motivation for kidnapping had only grown since. (...because he was a Dillinger, because he was a board member at largest tech giant in the world, because his father had once kidnapped Alan Bradley...)
None of those motives had resulted in his current situation.
It had been one of those days, where his team had been infighting, and Mackey was being exceptionally obnoxious, and Ed just needed a long walk to stay sane.
He hadn't intentionally walked to the old abandoned arcade, he hadn't planned to walk anywhere in particular. For some reason, he stopped in front of the old building. He'd been nine (since his father was released from prison), the last time he went. It took him a moment to notice the front door slightly ajar.
Out of curiosity, he peeked inside. A single set of footsteps wandered through the aisles of sleeping machines under their dust covers, before exiting again. It had been curiosity again that had led him to the basement, and hack into the old computer-desk (that had been his father's, once, although he'd only seen it once in person, when he was four...), but impulse that prompted him to activate the laser (definitely Dr. Baines's digitization laser).
And that was how he discovered the Rosetta Stone to Flynn's supposed 'lunacy.'
He'd been wandering around for perhaps a half hour when he realized that someone... a program? was following him.
The program chased him into a dark alley, where he'd run into their accomplice. That was the last thing he remembered before waking up here... wherever here was.
---
One of Shikara's lookouts spotted the user first, wandering her territory. And it was obviously what he was, with his strange attire and no disc. Ever an opportunist, she knew she needed to capture him. He was far too valuable to let roam free. If she didn't, someone else would seize the opportunity.
Coordinating the rest of her clan to capture the user was easy enough. Figuring out what to do with him after was more difficult.
---
Ransoming the user to the Occupation was Morris's idea. He and Shikara put together a list of demands:
They wanted the Occupation to acknowledge them as the administrative force in their sector.
They wanted the Occupation's help... absorbing their competition
They wanted control of the energy pool that fed their sector
They wanted a specific data cube, with blueprints of a weapon that the Occupation was developing.
They also wanted the only known working prototype of that weapon.
It didn't take long before they got a response. Shikara had several of her programs hide among the rooftops, in case anything happened. Morris and Shikara waited in the room above the club, where they could watch the street. Shikara would wait up top until he gave the signal to bring the user. She trusted him to handle the ransom.
Shikara would be alone with the user, but she didn't need any help to keep him in line. She knew how to make programs fear her should they step out of line.
When the single program came in sight, Morris went down to meet him.
Hello I see you found my side blog ;D
From the meme for [your choice, Clu, Tes, or Grid Hal, or any combination of them...] to find Ed
( hostage ) : held captive for ransom
— @not-that-dillinger
It was Hal who first discovered the ransom note. Being a civilian, he was able to move around in public in Argon without drawing much attention. Being an Archivist (a librarian, really), it made sense for him to be watching news and message feeds (Archivists were always gathering data for one purpose or another, so it wasn't unusual for one to be poking around records and notes, even private ones). And being an Administrative Aide to Clu, he of course had to report it. And he did. He took the notice to the person whose messages he'd been going through.
General Tesler had been incredibly careful to maintain the ruse that he was part of the Occupation, that he believed in its cause. In reality, he was a mole, working with Clu, whose 'disappearance' he'd helped orchestrate. The two were old friends, and it was Tesler who had rescued Hal from the Games after Pavel had sent him there (Pavel sometimes just picked some poor program at random and threw them in there for no real reason. Tesler had saved Hal by saying he'd make a good office assistant and the general could use one.) He had then introduced Hal to Clu, who was in town 'on Occupation business' which just meant he'd been dragged along to torture for Dyson and Pavel's sick enjoyment when they were bored. Tesler had previously, with unintentional help from the Argon Renegade, broken Clu out of the cell he was kept in and taken him into the Outlands. From there, Clu had insisted he go find a place on his own, so in the event Tesler was caught or had his disc checked, Clu's location wouldn't be revealed to the enemy.
But this he had to report to the Admin. There was a User on the Grid. And the Occupation would never allow that. So they had to reach him first.
And Clu had called an emergency meeting between his old friend and his aide (and of course, himself) to see what they should do.
Which was why they were in Purgos now, all three dress completely in black, no circuits visible. Hal was making a fake ransom drop. Tesler and Clu, the two who actually knew how to fight, were hidden and ready to pounce on whoever came to receive the drop.

A courier should be arriving shortly to deliver my final proposal. I hope you find the terms of the deal acceptable and in order.
The merging of our two companies will lay the groundwork for a brighter future for all of us. Please consider this as a new beginning and not as a failure on your part.
