Oh, well. What's a royal ball? After all, I suppose it would be frightfully dull, and-and-and boring, and-and completely... Completely wonderful. -Cinderella (1950)

The importance of inclusive fantasy
With the start of Pride Month, let's discuss one of the many reasons we're campaigning to #SaveShadowAndBone and greenlight #SixOfCrowsSpinoff: the Grishaverse series is a great example of inclusive writing of LGBTQIA characters.
Tumblr media
One facet of this is the fact that Leigh Bardugo has stated in-universe homophobia does not exist. The result is a world where the characters’ stories are not built around their sexuality, but rather the part they play in progressing the story.
Tumblr media
Within the fantasy genre, queer characters are also under-represented as a whole, but Bardugo, however, did an amazing job with representing multiple identities from the LGBTQIA community in her stories. The Grishaverse canon is inclusive of transgender, asexual and aromantic characters, who are frequently overlooked in mainstream media.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LGBTQIA inclusion within the Grishaverse extends to the cast of Netflix Shadow and Bone as well. Jessie Mei Li, who stars as the main character Alina Starkov, identifies as queer and gender nonconforming. Jack Wolfe plays Wylan Hendriks/Van Eck and is openly queer. This diverse casting helps create relatable characters, and the accepting nature of the cast has positively contributed to a feeling of safety within the fandom for LGBTQIA fans.
Tumblr media
A fictional world, like the Grishaverse, where queer characters can openly express affection without fear of ramifications is hugely important as it's still a surprisingly revolutionary idea. Being able to escape into these more accepting fantasy worlds holds an appeal with LGBTQIA fans due to the often harsh realities of living as marginalized people in the real world. Having struck a chord with many of us, it’s vital we fight to keep such a world alive.

I met ben barnes , jessie mei li and the cast of Shadow And Bone this weekend for the SAB convention 'ASOCAS3'.
For the first day I took my photo with ben. He was really super nice. When he saw my sweater and my hat, (merchandising his "Songs For You" EP" he said "wow , you look amazing". he asked me how I was. He gave me a hug as soon as he saw me. I managed to speak to him in English. I showed him the pose I'd chosen and he agreed straight away. He thanked me in French.
In the afternoon I had my selfie with him. Basically it was just a single photo and he took 2 (a simple one and a funny one).
Throughout the day, there were various panels with all the actors/actress.
The second day I had a total of 5 extras with ben and jessie.
I got my picture with jessie mei li . She loved my beanie with the grishaverse logo. She said i was amazing . And then my picture with Ben and Jessie. They were sweethearts, super nice. Just before the darklina photo, despite the stress, I managed to focus on Ben and asked him "can you wait a bit until I put on my beanie for the photo" directly he said yes. When he saw my beanie, he had a big smile on his face and said it looked cool.
I didn't get a chance to ask Ben my question at the panel, as a lot of people had gotten up to ask him questions.
In the afternoon there were selfie sessions with Jessie. She was really sweet with me. She took 3 selfies with me instead of just one.
After that came the autograph session. For Jessie it was quite quick as I had managed to get to the front of the queue.
Fun fact: jessie pronounces my first name correctly. When she heard how I pronounced it, she repeated it very seriously so as not to make any pronunciation mistakes. She was even very touched that I wrote her a letter. She looked me straight in the eye and said "thank you, darling, that means a lot to me". (So now I tell myself that Jessie has a bracelet that I made her).
For Ben's autograph, the queue was surprisingly quick too.
I asked Ben (with the help of the translator because i was very stressed), was he inspired by Billy Russo (his character in the Marvel series The Punisher) to play Kirigan. Since Billy and Kirigan have a lot in common .
He told me he'd been inspired by it, as they're very similar.
I waited until he had signed my book before handing him the letter I had written him.
He was really touched that I had written him a letter. He thanked me by holding my forearm, looking me in the eyes and saying "thank you, beautiful, that means a lot to me".
It really was the best weekend of my life. I don't regret a thing. I met some extraordinary people. I overcame my shyness a little during the weekend. I cried at the end of the closing ceremony because I didn't want it to end.
Another fun fact. Calahan Skogman was so touched by the presence of so many fans that he took out his phone during the opening ceremony to film us (so I'm probably in his phone). And Luke Pasqualino unfortunately had to leave in a hurry due to a personal problem. He still finished everything he had to do at the convention, and then went back to the panel room to thank us for our kindness, for the warm welcome he'd received from us, and for making him feel at home with all the fans.
There was also a problem with a couple who brought their children (one not even a year old and the other not even 6 months old). All this without protecting their ears).
There was also a problem on both days. With a "fan" who made Daisy Head and Danielle Galligan cry. Right after she made Patrick Gibson and Sujaya Dasgupta really uncomfortable. Patrick laughed but very nervously. They didn't answer the question, which was so embarrassing for them.
After that, she forced Calahan to do a pose for the photos that he didn't want to do because he was so uncomfortable. She pushed until he reluctantly agreed. Then she said he'd touched her inappropriately during the photo. Which isn't true, because the fans in the room and the organization's staff saw exactly what had happened and that she was the problem.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 premieres March 16, 2023 on Netflix
First look images, followed by quotes from Eric Heisserer, Daegan Fryklind, and Leigh Bardugo, as well as a synopsis and more info on Season 2, which I cannot frickin' wait for.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eric Heisserer and Daegan Fryklind (Co-Showrunners / Executive Producers / Writers) & Leigh Bardugo (Author / Executive Producer) on what fans can expect this season:
HEISSERER: The most wonderful thing about Season Two is that we get to advance the story of these characters that we'd left in precarious positions at the end of Season One. There's a lot of potential for them this season. They have to face the consequences for their actions, and then they get to meet new people along the way. The Grishaverse also expands in this season, both in mythology and in characters. In doing so, we expand the world, we go to new locations, we visit Novyi Zem and Shu Han, and those are all integral to the narrative.
FRYKLIND: We've also really dug into more of the mythology this season in terms of the amplifiers, but also the creator of the amplifiers, Morozova, who he was, what his backstory is, and how he ties into this world. We go out and we go deeper.
BARDUGO: I think the readers now trust our writers the way that I do. This season I was able to step back and put the show more firmly in their hands. I think when we approached Season One, a lot of people were like, "It's impossible. It can't be done. Why would you bring SHADOW AND BONE and SIX OF CROWS together?" And I think now, we have that trust. And I think it's going to be very, very exciting for them to see the way that trust pays off in Season Two. Every part of the Grishaverse is coming into play. We are going to get to see some incredible new characters. We're going to see characters interacting with each other, questing with each other, fighting and laughing with each other, who we never got to see together in the books. And I think that's a unique thing about this show. Readers are not only going to be surprised by the way that these storylines crash into each other, they're never going to know where the next move is coming from—and that actually was a pleasure for me because I got to be surprised by my own stories.

Synopsis: Alina Starkov is on the run. A beacon of hope to some and a suspected traitor to others, she's determined to bring down the Shadow Fold and save Ravka from ruin. But General Kirigan has returned to finish what he started. Backed by a terrifying new army of seemingly indestructible shadow monsters and fearsome new Grisha recruits, Kirigan is more dangerous than ever. To stand a fighting chance against him, Alina and Mal rally their own powerful new allies and begin a continent-spanning journey to find two mythical creatures that will amplify her powers. Back in Ketterdam, the Crows must forge new alliances as they contend with old rivals and even older grudges that threaten not only their place in the Barrel, but their very lives. When a chance at a deadly heist comes their way, the Crows will once again find themselves on a collision course with the legendary Sun Summoner. Based on Leigh Bardugo's worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels, SHADOW AND BONE returns for a second season of new friendships, new romance, bigger battles, epic adventures — and a shocking family secret that could shatter everything.

Some say Sophie's hair is dark blonde. I honestly don't like the idea of Lily James fancast because most people chose her cuz she plays Cinderella. Then again, the idea of inter-racial cast for Sophie just doesn't fit me. Please understand that I'm not being racist, I just feel like Benedict's story with Luke Thompson portraying him needs something more like what we see on "Pride and Prejudice" or "Emma" (different tropes, obviously).
So the question is, who's your fancast for Sophie Beckett?
YES someone who gets it about how boring the Lily James fancast is!! I’m so tired of people fan casting her as Sophie just because she’s seems to have been the best Cinderella in the last decade (and that’s a seriously low bar) but it’s time to let it go.
Although sorry about dissing Pride and Prejudice for a sec, because I’m seriously bored of P&P too. I mean Keira’s Pride and Prejudice came out in 2005. But for some reason, until Bridgerton came along, that seemed to be the only period drama worth talking about in Tumblr and it’s gotten old. Personally I love Lizzie, but there’s only so many repeats of that movie I can play for 18 years before I start watching Sense and Sensibility. Or the Jennifer Elhe version of P&P.
As a rule, it is fun for me to fancast Jessie Mei Li as Sophie because I’ve yet to see an Asian Cinderella outside of k-drama, and as someone who advocates for fully racially diverse casting in productions like Bridgerton. I want the Asians to have a larger representation…. And also because I like to bet against the odds, and deep down I know that given Shondaland track record of having so few Asians characters in her shows, the likelihood of Sophie being Asian is unlikely. So if it happens, It’ll bring me the highest emotional reward.
That being said, Sophie’s full name is supposed to be Sophia Maria Beckett. We never find out who her mother was, but given her name and what little we know of her mother, who was supposed to be in the theatre business, I assume her mother was a born Spanish or Italian speaker, so Sophie’s mom canonically was either Spanish, Italian, or South American. Since Sophia and Maria were common names for women in those regions at the time.
So if I’m fancasting book Sophie, I would fancast her as a blond haired South American actress. A friend of mine suggested Ana de Armas and now I can’t stop thinking about it. In fact I think I’m going to change my fancast in Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss to Ana, because I would love to see her play Sophie, I saw her in Knives Out and Ghosted, and I think she’s got the mixture of cute and badass that would make her a perfect hardworking Sunshine Cinderella who punches Araminta. There’s a reason it’s not totally believable when she plays role of femme fatales, and it’s because she’s definitely got the type of cute innocent face that just doesn't lend itself well to sexy seductive action roles, even tough she's an excellent actress. In my opinion.
I think that Ana de Armas could in fact pull off the whole 'he didn't recognize her without a mask' scene and make it believable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But in the end, if we were betting money, and if we were playing with the rules of probability, instead of against them. The most likely thing that’s going to happen, is that Sophie’s actress has already been casted and that she is black, or mixed raced black. And I’m saying this because it was foreshadowed in QC (or so my sources tell me) and also because Shonda is extremely predictable. In the sense that it seems to be what the majority of the viewers seem to want (when it's not Lily James)
So yeah that's the tea. Jessie Mei Li or Ana De Armas for Sophie.

I already posted this, BUT season 2 is coming next year and i need and updated version, rebbloging the old one is not enought
Don’t-harrass-the-actors-or-crew 2.0 (A lot of this is the same text as before, but updated)
If Ben Barnes likes Darklina ,no bashing ,no calling him an abuse apologist or anything like that (again)
If Jessie Mei Li likes Darklina,Malina , Nikolina, Genyalina,Zoyalina, Alina/Tamar or even single!Alina, it´s their experience as an actor, their perspective ,their opinion and must not be treated as a “feminist traitor” or something like that. NEW: Also leave alone conspiracy theories that when they shows liking for Darklina, they are being genuine but if they speak in favor of Malina, they are being manipulated by netflix (yes, people already did that)
If Archie Renaux likes Malina, don't bash or harrass him (AGAIN)
If you don’t like Mal remember, Archie didn’t wrote the script
If you don’t like Alina, Jessie didn’t wrote the script
If you don’t like the Darkling,Ben didn’t wrote the scripts (you get the idea)
And since fandom (not this in particular, just any fandom) will take any excuse to do girl hate: Don’t  hate on Sujaya Dasgupta as much as you could dislike her character. NEW: She didn't wrote the script (something people doesn't seem to get)
NEW: Whatever they do with Nikolai: Patrick didn't wrote the script, and he wasn't the one who had a hand over being choosen over Robert Wilde, he only auditioned.
Also, take in count Patrick probably had to do chemistry tests with Jessie but not Sujaya AND he will spend way more time with the first one. So there is a high chance he may ship Nikolina over Zoyalai and thats okay! there is no need to hate him for that.
NEW:
As much as i want Show!Tolya to be canon aroace and for Leigh to confirm it as canon after all those hints: If Lewis ships Tolya with someone, or if the show gives him a LI (we don't know if Vanessa Grace is actually playing a character, the imdb is incomplete since it doesn't have Adrik nor Jordie) don't hate him for it, since is not completely confirmed on the books and the blame would be on netflix for wasting representation material.
NEW:
Have you seen people giving Amita, Freddy,Kit or Dani a bad time, for bad things that were done with their characters and focussing the critism on the script and/or casting directors? Also: Freddy,Amita and Kit all support Malina, have you seen people attaking them? (other than a couple of joke responses to Kit)? Well, you can do the same! Not harrasing people doesn't hurt. I have the feeling this is because everyone knows the SoC part of the fandom won't let them live if they touch any of the crow actors (reason i am not too worried about Jack). The only i have seen is that person who put down Amita´s acting in order to highlight Ben´s , which fortunetaly was just one person and even Ben Barnes fans called them on that one. If you can show decency to them, you can do it with the other actors.
And Kuwei hasn't been casted yet but i´ll get ahead: don’t bash on his actor ,even if they cast someone who ships Kuwei and Jesper, he´ll deserve respect.
I know there are more new characters but, i am mostly sure no one will have a problem with Anna &Joanna and/or Kit & Jack liking their character´s ships , nor that Zoyalai shippers would come after Alistair for Adrik´s canon crush on Zoya.
Oh yeah, almost forgot: Don't give Joanna a hard time for reemplacing Gabrielle
We are never going to agree in a lot of things, but lets not be that fandom that harrases real people over ships or characters. NEW: Lets say the fandom was mostly tame, but the toxic behaviour should not be "low" it should be "zero"

Jessie Mei Li posted on Insta Stories little drawings of the cast of "Shadow and Bone" on Netflix.

Have you noticed that Archie (actor of Mal) is very little / almost never with the cast in interviews? I don't even think I've seen him do a solo interview duet with Jessie. She's still with Ben. Based on this "promotional content", people are more likely to believe that the core of the series are Alina and the Darkling. Which is technically the case in fact. (By the way, my relatives who have just seen the show, clearly think that Darklina is the center of everything) But it always bothered me, Mal is supposed to be Alina's main love interest, but the actor is not almost never with the cast, let alone just Jessie. It's quite disturbing. Not that I'm complaining, I much prefer all the duets we have of Ben and Jessie to anything else. I love their friendship.
I mean I'll be honest I first came across Shadow and Bone when I was bored one day and looking for something to watch on Netflix, you know how on your homepage they've usually got that big banner at the top that promotes a particular show and when you hover over it it'll play a clip from it? Well on this particular day it was for season 1 of shadow and bone, I think it had been out for about a week at that point. My first reaction was omg that's prince caspian, then I hovered and watched the clip which was a darklina clip from 1x02 where he tells her about the cut in the field. From then on I believed that the main romance/characters of the show was darklina because they were the ones on the banner and they were the ones in the clip. Netflix does seem to promote darklina alot and I do think that's because they know its the most popular ship in the grisha trilogy books. I also remember seeing an article before shadow and bone season 2 dropped, about the soundtrack, where it said this: 'The full soundtrack for the Ben Barnes and Jessie Mei Li-led series comes out March 10.' Not going to lie but them stating that it was led by Ben and Jessie did make me raise my eyebrow a bit as seeing it is suppose to be Mal and Alina as the main romance of the show you would think it would be Archie and Jessie as the leads.
As for Archie not being part of the promotion in interviews etc I did see someone say that he missed the premiere because of scheduling with another project he is working on. So it really could be as simple as just a scheduling conflict, he also has a daughter at home so between filming for both projects, promotional work and making sure he gets time with his little girl they just might not have been able to fit in interviews for season 2 of shadow and bone into his schedule as well. Which is a shame because I like Archie and would have liked to see him do some interviews with the cast, I think I only saw one which was the cast read out fan theories and thirst tweets one.
That being said now that you've mentioned it I don't think I've seen an interview with just Jessie and Archie either, it usually either Ben, Jessie and Archie all together or them three with the six of crows actors or its just Jessie and Ben, which thinking about it is a bit odd if you are promoting mal and alina as the main romance. Hmm this is interesting I've never thought about this before. But I am with you with them promoting it this way I wouldn't be surprised if people did believe that it is darklina that is the centre of the show and the main romance.

LISA! i'm so sorry is taking me so long to come here, things have been crazy this year but i had to tell you I'M GOING TO THE ERAS TOUR
i'm so happy!!!! i couldn't believe i got the tickets, it was so chaotic. but she's finally coming to brazil and i'll be able to go and it'll be like 2 weeks before my birthday so it's the best gift ever!!
i hope you're having a nice summer vacation!! get some rest and have fun, i'm sending a lot of love <3
about shadow and bone, i agree, season 2 was so disappointing. the cast is everything i dreamed about, i love them so much, but everything else... i still can't believed they combined s&s and r&r and somehow managed to erase half of alina's story. i think it's so disrespectful with the fans and even with jessie mei li, we lost a lot of character depth and all of her internal battle, i was pissed
and there's some things that were just so ???
i mean, nikolai is this incredible privateer and tolya and tamar are great and they have so much sea experience, but still they decided to go walking with alina, mal and 3 other guys into that little cavern to try and kill something called the sea whip, a million years mythological monster. it doesnt make any sense.
all of genya's arc was messed up, i was so mad that they kept the king during all of vasily's dinner but they had to kill him there so she wouldn't be able to do the "i'm not ruined, i'm ruination" moment. and yes, she confronted the queen, but it's SUCH a moment in the book when she gathers up confidence to confront the man who abused her for years and we were robbed. also, they gave her like, two scars
the darkling looked like he was dying the whole season, if alina didn't kill him, he would've died of pneumonia in two weeks lol
and they did the crows so dirty, if we do get the spin off i wonder how the hell they're going to justify inej's return. she has absolutely no reason to join the heist, she's already free and in a ship living her best life
and yes, mal as sturmhond was traumatizing. and so was the little hint at tolya and inej possibly being a couple. i wanted to cry.
but sujaya was so pretty and her little wink when zoya is talking to alina made me faint so that was great. paddy as nikolai had me in a chokehold the entire time and honestly, every single actor is so good in that show
OMG ERAS TOUR!!! tell me EVERYTHING when you go, the video clips i've seen of her past performances look INCREDIBLE. does this mean you get to see sabrina carpenter too??
and yes, all of your shadow and bone thoughts are so correct. i mean it KILLS me because the show should be so good! their casting was incredible and the costumes are fantastic and the cgi is good and the locations are great... and the source material worked just fine... but no, they butchered everything. there was no reason to do that! i know shows are getting canceled left and right so they felt like they had to streamline it so they could get to everything but girl... WHY
it was so great to hear from you!! hoping you're doing well too xoxo

What do you think about the discourse around the Shadow and Bone cast being considered for Emmys by Netflix?
Clearly I'm reaching way back in the inbox today. Apologies for getting to this late!
Personally, I saw some pretty mean videos about on TikTok by creators who describe themselves as Shadow and Bone fans.
It's one thing to acknowledge the incredibly competitive list of possible nominees. It's another thing to dismiss the talent of the Shadow and Bone cast because they're a smaller, YA fantasy show against what is considered prestige television.
Jessie Mei Li, Amita Suman, Danielle Galligan, Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, and Kit Young did incredible work in Season 2. I don't think that should be diminished in a mean-spirited post.
