It's been a week since I got back from Tokyo, and I'm still disappointed by the Kingdom Hearts Ichiban Kuji. It was supposed to start the 31st of May, the day I was flying home. But I checked like a dozen participating 7/11 stores before I went to the airport, and none of them had started it yet. Sigh...

As a silver lining, I did find a 7/11 that had those chocolate wafers out early, so I grabbed a few.

Came with that Missing Link pre-registration and everything. Wonder what's going on with that... And while I'm showing stuff off, here's the other KH merch I bought in my limited time!

Playing around with another one of my 18th century favorites, Niel Gow's Lament for the Death of His Second Wife. I met a wonderful fiddler at Salem this weekend who reminded me how much I love this tune; I only wish I had recorded our rendition, as I tend to compulsively do, but that wouldn't have been very period accurate of me while playing for the officers' luncheon...

Oh dear...

Alex is attending one of the most prestigious magic academies in the country, on the orders of his parents of course. Even though Laiz Fier Academy reviles even the name of the only type of magic he's ever been good at. His parents swore he'd find another specialty here, and he'd let himself believe them, like the idiot he is. He's scraping by in classes. Barely. At least he's managed to make a couple of friends and figure out how to sneak into the library stacks to find books that will actually help him hone his skills.

However, Alex realizes now there's a reason why it's not recommended to do your first summoning alone. Because, while he does manage to summon a demon, it doesn't exactly end up in the silvery urn he'd laid in the center of the pentagram.

So now he has a talking, demonic Furby to hide. One that, despite its too-wide eyes and disconcertingly smooth voice, Alex thinks he might be developing feelings for.

People don't know much about orchestration as a rule; it's one of the undersung aspects of the musical. But no musical had quite such a saga of orchestration as Annie Get Your Gun.

Irving Berlin wrote the score; Rodgers and Hammerstein produced, and Phil Lang was asked to orchestrate Berlin's music. He was reasonably early in his career and would go on to orchestrate hits like Hello, Dolly! and My Fair Lady - but here, he tried to create an orchestral sound where the melody was not given to the singers. Normally there is a line for the singers to hold to, often the clarinet in that era. Legend has it that the sitzprobe was a disaster; the cast was not used to music without the leading line and Rodgers and Hammerstein insisted that the orchestrations be rewritten from scratch before the impending opening.

Phil Lang still has the first credit, but he was fired from production. The other orchestrators credited are Robert Russell Bennett, arguably the most famous orchestrator of the time, and Ted Royal. However, extant scores show that as many as 25 orchestrators were called in to finish the job, "ghosting" as a favour as was not uncommon in that era. As a result, Annie Get Your Gun is possibly the musical where the finished product has been touched by the largest number of orchestrators - does this affect the style? Arguably not - ghosting was common in that era and most orchestrators were quite good at blending to the dominant sound. A side of musical theatre that few know about!
