2, 9, 18!!
hello!
2. Album of the year? I already answered this and I don't tend to listen to entire albums but I really enjoyed Muna's self named album, it slaps.
9. Best month for you this year? Probably July...I got married and then went on my honeymoon. Like definitely the most stressful month for the first half and then the most relaxing hahahaha
18. A memorable meal this year? answering this again because i love talking about food, we made new york times cooking's slow cooker hoison sauce ginger pulled pork tacos and they are soooooooo good, i think it needed more acid so we added lime but omg, so good! we also converted it from a slow cooker to an instapot recipe. I am always thinking about these tacos.
thank you 💜

Favorite Animal: I'm not sure if otters are actually my favourite but i get more excited about otters than almost anything lol
Favorite Movie: Fantastic Mr Fox
Favorite Season: Autumn, which is basically Summer-If-It-Were-Pleasant in Australia. We have less stereotypical autumn colours because of the types of trees here, there's some but its not as dominant, it's really just the best weather you get all year
Favorite Character(s): Sam Winchester my longest relationship :')
Favorite Color: Purple! I picked a picture of a tibouchina tree, i had one outside my window at my old house and it would bloom sooo purple every March, i really miss it. I'm gonna try and find one to plant at my current house
Favorite Hobby: This was hard but i picked gardening because we've just come out of winter and i MISS IT. I'm v ready to get back in the dirt (will hopefully be ordering soil to establish my veg garden tomorrow!)
Favorite Book: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, prev since Jane Eyre is your fav book i'm curious if you've read it!
Favorite Song: Girl Almighty by One Direction, i've bought so many stickers with these lyrics over the years lol, i think this is going to be my next one
Favorite Drink: Peppermint tea

9 & 13 for the end of year asks pls!
9. Best Month for you this Year
Probably July! The weather was amazing so I was able to go camping/hiking a lot and I went on my first multiple day backpacking trip! I had just finished school and I was briefly dating someone and it brought me a lot of joy, even though it didn’t work out.
13. How was your birthday this year?
It landed on the day our state declared mandatory mask wearing which I was very grateful for and will now always remember! But otherwise it was lovely: I got to read, spend some time alone at the park, and I met that person I was dating in person for the first time.

@extemporaneousmusings thank you for giving me the excuse to talk this through, let’s dig in, shall we??
so first i used to work in the southwest and now i work in the pacific north west, which is probably as different of a climate as you can get. i really enjoyed the hot and dry weather, going out in the rain and cold is not fun for me! it’s much less hard on your body which is good, but the extra steps of waterproofing everything adds extra brain power i don’t want to have to use while also being out in the field. i’m sure i’ll get used to it in time, but the amount of extra/special gear you need when it’s out is so much!
environment aside, i also changed disciplines. i moved from archaeology (below ground) to historic preservation (above ground), and i’ve learned there’s major differences in how field work is conducted and how often it happens. with archaeology, often there’s a large group going out (actually, there’s also a lot of solo work too depending on the type of company and projects you work for) and with historic preservation (hp) we almost always go in pairs. with archaeology i usually had my own car, and even in large groups had freedom to do my own thing in the evening, where with hp, we usually share a car, and often have extra computer work in the evenings. with hp you’re doing both the field work and the reporting, which is less common in archaeology, and i miss the freedom to be done with a project both at the end of the workday and once you’re out of the field!
okay, so even if i was still doing archy work, i think as i’m getting older i’m just not as into it! i like my bed and my routine and i don’t bounce back as quickly as when i was 21. i think if i could do more of the logistic planning i’d feel better about it, especially on this last trip i would have done a lot more reconnaissance ahead of time, and think i could have made a better plan than the one we had. but again, i think that’s something that’ll improve with time as i get more comfortable with my new coworkers and taking charge of things i know i’m good at planning.
i miss the camaraderie of a group of archaeologists too, especially since the work is much more grueling, you get paid less, and often people have chosen field work as a lifestyle, you form a little “us against the world” type group and it’s fun! (of course it’s not like this every time, but often enough that i felt it was worth the trips that didn’t go so smoothly) with hp, our projects are more visible than the remote or construction site work that's common in archaeology, so you have to be “on” more during the day and there’s less room for joking around or being casual on the job site.
lastly, there’s this weird social pressure to want to do less field work as you get older? again, i'm not sure if this is specific to my current job, but i'm the only one without a long term partner/house/settled life and although that's definitely not what i want right now, the rest of my coworkers don't want to be away for a long time, which changes the way we organize our field work. there's less going on a random adventure after dinner because we saw a cool landmark, or taking an extra hour on the drive back to check out a museum. that extra stuff was a huge draw for me, because so often you're going somewhere you'd never go on your own, so not having the time to explore everything i want to see is kind of disappointing!
i'm not really sure if there’s anything to be done about that, and i don’t want to sound like i want to live forever young or like i’m complaining about my coworkers settling down. that’s a whole other essay about nomadic lifestyles/ being able to afford stability i’m not going to touch, but those biases are definitely at play here. okay, i’m going to touch it a little bit- there’s a lot of talk on either side about being “grateful” (those are disdainful air quotes haha), to be able to do fieldwork and not be stuck in a boring desk job (hp), or to have a comfortable salary and general stability (archy). it was definitely easier for me to see myself as the person being taken advantage of by a system that keeps wages low through the idea that it’s a career that you should do for the love of it, so there’s always more people than jobs. i don’t want to lose sight of that, and as i do field work with arguably better conditions/resources than my archaeologist counterparts, it puts the industry in an uncomfortable light. part of the reason i pursued a masters degree was so i could get out of those worse conditions, but now that i’m here i want to think more about how i can contribute to a change in the culture around field work that doesn’t take advantage of people for doing, what i think, is necessary and important work.
#wow that got way more involved than i planned#i do hate rain but also capitalism and career culture#field work#job talk#i don't know if i want to put this in any main tags#i might do some brainstorming on the last point#and see if i can take that anywhere next year actually#hmmm#i do need a new terminal project topic...

Lantern and cider!
hi <3
lantern - how did you meet your best friend? What were your first impressions of each other? - so for one of my best friends, she introduced herself to me because I was wearing a sweatshirt that said 'don't tell me to smile' and i was so charmed by her bravery and jokes! we suffered through a math class together, and then eventually bonded at the campus coffee shop. now we are ride or die :')
cider - a food that you disliked as a child but now enjoy? - i love steak. i really did not enjoy it as a child bc i just don't think i had it cooked properly but now i really, really love it. ditto for salmon, ugh, it's so good!
thank you <3
#answered#extemporaneousmusings#btw i will text you soon sorry for the delay <3#do you have similar food stories???

You are so kind and considerate to the people in your life, even if they are only in it for a few minutes, which I admire and respect so much.
not really vibes but whatever, I'll compliment you any day of the week with utmost sincerity
MAURA 😭the way other people see me is so different from how i see myself which i guess is the whole point of validating and reinforcing our friends in the ways that only we can. i appreciate you so so much 💚

extemporaneousmusings said: i don’t know how you’re doing so much rn!!! esp when you were teaching. so impressive. i’m just sitting here doing nothing but tbh i kinda needed the break
honestly i think it’s just keeping me sane to have so many things on my to do list for the next few weeks haha. i took a week and a half off right after i finished teaching (i think the first week and a half of july) and it was nice but i think i’d just lose it if i did nothing all summer (which probably is a result of my being in the field every summer for like...five years?). but i always tell people that they should take breaks!! they deserve them!!! YOU deserve a break!!! even if i can’t take my own advice (although i don’t work on weekends so...that counts right??)

last song: Oblivion by Grimes which is an oldie but a goodie
last movie: I think it was actually Easy A which. let me tell you. does NOT age very well. I think the last time I had seen it was when it came out and I was like in 8th grade and I had remembered liking it.... can confirm it’s actually Not Good.
currently watching: second season of the Umbrella Academy. just finished that new Christmas show on Netflix called Dash & Lily which was also definitely Not Good and fairly cringe but the story premise was kinda cute and it’s Christmasy so tis the season. I think I would recommend it over Easy A? hard to tell.
currently reading: Becoming by Michelle Obama. Now that I’m not commuting I’ve actually been really bad about reading and I’m trying to fix that.
currently craving: the ability to stay out late at a bar and catch the last bus home. also baked goods with cardamom.
I tag @mrmolite pls!

ok but would Harry use a wicker alligator as a picnic basket?
he absolutely would. try and tell me he wouldn’t absolutely delight in filling it with whole wheat bread mini sandwiches and some type of fig dessert...
