stray canto vii part 1 thoughts (warning: long)

so many cool new designs!! it made me realize how few of interest we got in Canto VI. Then almost everything was pretty standard (classic maid and butler outfits, lots of suits, Cathy had a fancy dress at least? and everything was brown. yes I know, T Corp color drain, but still. and Öufi came before season 3 ended so that didn’t count), but this time we have Camille, the P Corp guys, Fanghunt Office, Hugo I guess, Hong Lu’s sister, the firefist guy? if he counts? he barely appeared, Sansón, and all the fancy dressed up bloodfiends. woo babey!!

speaking of Jia Xichun, I like her! She’s cute! I didn’t expect to see anyone related to Hong Lu, but in retrospect I probably should’ve, since his turn is next and his family is massive. I hope nothing bad happens to her. I've never read Dream of the Red Chamber

I remember when Canto V part 2 came out and he censored himself saying “Bitch Brother” people were worried that the new translators were making him softer than he actually was, but, nah, he tries his best to be a polite boy but when he’s actually genuinely pissed off he does not hold back. Ryōshū correcting him BUT THEN SAYING HIS INTERPRETATION WAS GOOD absolutely killed me. my son demands respect

The scripted loss encounter was so cool. They set you to level 45 no matter what level your LCB Don is, and take away all your EGO except the base (which you can’t even use), and I don’t know how far you can actually get in this fight because I flipped tails every single time and lost every clash

let’s talk about the Barber! leave it to Project Moon to look at the character who didn’t have very much of a personality who stuck around with the priest and attempted multiple plans to bring Don Quixote back home so he could become sane again (and burned a bunch of Quixote’s chivalry books, also with the priest), and turned him into an insane vampire woman with big scissors and a shrill cackle who stitches masks onto people’s faces.

interesting choice to have Sancho and Dulcinea both named in a single line and then not acknowledged or mentioned again

Sansón! so based on his story log portrait background being bisexual, the blue name, and him resembling someone in Demian’s group in the Limbus Company PV, I feel confident saying he’s part of Demian’s Group. The spot where his Sign would be is covered by his mask, though, so no one in-universe knows

I think this is why Sinclair was cast in the role of the Knight of the White Moon: he also has the sign, which Sansón (who is the Knight of the White Moon) would be able to see, and even if other sinners have it too, they’re not Demian’s special guy. everyone else, though, seemed to be cast in the most humiliating role possible: horse to be ridden for Gregor, wild animal for Heathcliff, random peasant for Rodya, presumably homeless old person for Outis

ok Sansón. in the book, he’s a young college student who read the first part of Don Quixote and, in part 2, approaches Quixote saying he’s a big fan and encouraging him to go back out and do more knight stuff. However, he actually just thinks Don Quixote’s antics are very amusing and isn’t actually an earnest supporter, and is conspiring with the barber and priest to get Quixote back home to stay. the way they (priest and barber try to bring him home in part 1 is by tricking him with an adventure that’s conveniently in the same direction as their home village, but then they get sidetracked in an inn for a long time so they just put him in a cage and drive him home. in part 2, they want to play on Quixote’s terms for a more effective result. near the beginning of the second part, they have Sansón dress as a knight (called the Knight of Mirrors/Knight of the Forest. these titles have no significance in the book but apparently the mirror thing forces Quixote to see himself as the frail old man he is in Man of La Mancha), say his lady is fairer than Dulcinea to get Don Quixote to duel him, and then make Quixote promise to stay home for a year when he loses. however, Sansón is the one who loses, because he wasn’t expecting Quixote to actually be good at jousting. Later, near the very end, which iirc is 3 months after the first encounter, another knight called the Knight of the White Moon issues the exact same challenge to Don Quixote (it’s just Sansón again, and "White Moon" has no significance in the original book either), but this time Sansón wins, so Don Quixote goes home, dejected, and then becomes “sane” again and dies.

Since this Sansón is part of Demian’s group, I don’t think his intentions will be the same- the Barber was a bloodfiend, and he sees beyond the ambitions of the bloodfiends now- but it’s fun to know how he is in the source nonetheless

I really like how he didn’t show up after the Barber’s defeat to say something cryptic and then leave, he told us quite a bit, and though his methods were… questionable, he DID force the sinners to actually finally pay attention to Don Quixote

speaking of the stage play, I like the juxtaposition between Sansón’s play and the Barber’s. in a different context, what Sansón did might’ve been framed as horrifying, and we’d be talking about how uncanny and unreal this is, but I don’t think that’s the intention here. the sinners might be playing roles, and all the enemies are cardboard cutouts, but it’s better than putting targets on real people (though I guess they’re not “people”, they’re bad, bad, bloodfiends). the cheerful music in La Manchaland is distorted and out of place, while the stage play is nice in comparison. the music for the talking sections is a bit too upbeat for the situation, but the music during the battles really immerses you. guitar! trumpet! maraca! this music is clearly composed to emulate spanish music, and it’s very earnest, which I think is important, with how easily music sets tone in media.

in both cases, Don Quixote is in a delusion. nothing in the stage play of her adventures is real, but she’s also completely wrapped up in the narrative of evil bloodfiends without the knowledge that she is one. a violent nightmare and a peaceful dream, both of which she needs to wake up from.

they both do this thing with black-and-white thinking, too. there’s a difference between the “good” bloodfiends, which you should get along with, and the “bad” ones, which you need to kill (though Don sees them both as bad), and then the bandits in the stage play are cartoonishly evil and love to bully the weak. except it seems the first is the narrative the Barber wanted to sell, while the second is Don Quixote’s reality�� I mean, the play is definitely inaccurate, but we’ve seen how Don behaves

if you follow me for kingdom hearts and are for some reason reading this you know how much I love Nobodies in kh. people who used to be human, but aren’t anymore, who look close enough but are different on an intrinsic and physiological level, that everyone automatically treats as unreasonable monsters that need to die when they’re more complicated than that… I love it so much, I’m cheering and clapping whenever bloodfiend morality is brought up. Moses said that Larierre was cordial and offered her a place to sit and talk, but then also said bloodfiends are insatiably hungry and you shouldn’t underestimate them. agh I love it

also THE MUSIIIIIC every fight theme so far has been a banger. songs that were already good but with typical carnival instruments, big brass swing, the aforementioned nice spanish music, and the fucked up and evil sequel to dubstep electroswing featuring evil laughter

and finally, the helm of mambrino. in early part 1 of Don Quixote, he sees a barber (COMPLETELY unrelated barber to the other barber btw) carrying a basin on his head, and thinks it’s the amazing mystical Helm of Mambrino, so he attacks the barber and steals the basin. Don Quixote wears it as a helmet a few times and everyone thinks it looks really stupid. they did not fight a bear for it, nor did they go into a cave. idk what this might actually be in the City. either we’ll see or we won’t

I'm cheating here by linking the entire series (which is 11 fics of various levels of interconnectedness) but it's so worth it. This series tore my heart out, stomped on it, stuck it back in and gave me a sweet little kiss at the end. Several times over!! I cried like 4 times in one night while binging it!! Also this series contains one of the few OC/Canon stories that I enjoy!!

I actually read Burning Mountain first and then everything else in order and proceeded to LOSE MY GODDAMN MIND reading the first and second fics because OH. That's why the end of BM was so... OHhhhHHhhhh.........

The current fics included in the series are all finished, but I'm not sure if the author intends to come back to it in the future.

Ocarina of Time...tried this, sort of? almost completely irrelevant AGAIN. in twilight princess and wind waker they are just some guy basically and this is the best direction they could have gone with his character. except they ruined it in botw and ss and I will neverrrr forgive them for this. botw link beats up grown men at five years old he's like superbaby instant knight and I HATE it. it's just stupid. I don't even care that it applies pressure to him as a character and seems to affect him; they could have just made it an in-universe lie and it would have had the exact same effect so genuinely screw that trope

Don't know if you're still accepting asks about LSoW, but you mentioned once that all of the turtles in your au are intersex, except Mikey. Can I ask why you made them so and why Mikey is the exception?

I'm always accepting asks about LSoW! :D I'm not the best about answering them because I have crippling anxiety, but I love getting asks. ;-;

Disclaimer first: Genuinely no disrespect to any intersex people, because chromosomal differences and IRL intersex conditions have near next nothing to do with (I cannot exaggerate this enough) TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, the depiction of the Turtles in LSoW, or honestly, half the AU's with the same sort of headcanon. So keep that in mind. I strongly encourage people to do some research into actual intersex people and characteristics, because it isn't my intention at all to represent very normal people with (STILL CANNOT EXAGGERATE THIS ENOUGH) TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES. (Although if there IS an intersex person who reads LSoW and is like, hell yeah ninja turtles are just like me, more power to you brother. I wrote it for you and you only, I am kissing you gently on the head like a benevolent patron.)

That being said, 'intersex' was the best term I could come up with for this head canon, and fits so.

Reason 1: It's funny.

I am making Leonardo ninja turtle deal with turtle equivalent of periods, that is the funniest shit I will ever do. The idea that A: Raph dealt with it first, B: Leo was a smug shithead about it and then dealt with it a year after, and then C: Donnie was SMUGGER THAN HIM, and also dealt with it the NEXT WEEK? Hilarious. I am a comedy god.

Also I think I headcanoned Raph as having CJ with Casey a long time ago because Casey and Raph are soulmates in every universe. But problem is I headcanon Casey as TRANS, so how did they have Casey? Adoption is also great, but you know what would be FUNNIER-

Reason 2: Mikey's personality. (Also, it's funny again.)

When Draxum was making the turtles in LSoW, he gave them all the bits and pieces he needed in order to make them effective yokai super soldiers. Man literally said 'I'm making a turtle that can hold a sword and do backflips, I'm gonna give it all this other stuff too, OBVIOUSLY.' But box turtles are already pretty territorial and aggressive? I think the reason I gave at the time was Draxum literally said, 'Michelangelo is already so territorial if I gave him estrogen he'd have killed the others.' (Which is a gross oversimplification of how turtles split gender in the egg, herpetologists pls don't @ me they're ninja turtles I am sorry.)

Also it's funny again because Mikey is also smug down the chain of brothers from oldest to youngest with not having to deal with this embarrassing problem, but then DOESN'T get whacked with the egg whammy stick like the others?? Smug youngest sibling?? Mikey asking Leo with fake sympathy, 'Oh, is it your troubles again?' and Leo is forced to try and kill him with a rock.

Reason 3: Draxum (Also STILL YET ANOTHER reason to be funny.)

Draxum figures in the far off distant future if his supersoldiers DO make nests and eggs, a very territorial and family oriented guard that DOESN'T nest would be super effective.

Imagine the post apocalypse future where Raph and Casey have CJ, and you are a simple resistance soldier. You are minding your business surveying Krang tunnels after a delicious breakfast of beetle protein bar shaped into dino-nuggie form courtesy of Donatello Hamato, and Mystic Master Michelangelo appears out of the shadows in a side tunnel and tries to skin you with a fork because you got within a half mile of his expecting brother and his ninja girl friend.

(The only Y/N fic I will ever write.)

Most of the writing I get done is in spite of horrible unmedicated ADHD, anxiety, and being 30 years old with a very tiring job and increasingly troubling disability. depends entirely on whether or not they reside in the same universe. hlvrai is somewhat compatible with undertale, except for the uh. moral implications. we could argue that because the people they killed were not sentient beings, it does not affect the inherent message of undertale. however, the message in undertale is still about questioning the actions one takes in a videogame and giving you, the player, an apropiate response for the way you choose to engage with it. hlvrai, on the other hand, does not have this as a central theme at ALL. killing clones and bootboys is funny here and death is about as meaningful as it is permanent. which is to say not very lol

so different universes, then! which is good, because both our boys have been shown to exhibit SOME level of interdimensional awareness.

gman would be on a job, a couple universes over, where a centuries-long magical barrier was lifted just a couple years ago, thus freeing the civilization that was trapped inside.

human scientists are working with monsterkind to use magic for the betterment of everyone. one of the lead researchers for the magical division? you know it babey!!!! its gaster!!!!!!!! rescued by the ambassador of the monsters some years ago, up until then trapped in the nonexistent purgatory of the game's code, he's already made strides in the field. due to his meta-awareness however, he is spotted by the elusive interdimensional employers.

enter gman. he's tasked to assess the meta-aware characters, whether or not they were supposed to be aware in the first place, and keep tabs on them in case they become dangerous.

he's not supposed to be noticed, but as gaster trips one day and struggles to maintain his physical form, he steps in and helps him out. he's not about to let the poor guy melt, dammit.

they hang out for a while, just sitting on the floor, but once a human researcher walks in and asks who gaster is talking to, he finds that the man in the suit has vanished without a trace.

the following days, gaster is determined to make the mysterious man show up again. he knows his mind was not playing tricks on him, he had felt another soul with him during the few minutes they conversed.

it works. they keep meeting. they go on a date...

and of course canon-typical shenanigans ensue. but i haven't thought that far out.

Asher (annoying guy with light powers who thinks he can out manipulate everyone.... he can't) i don't think he's easily embarrassed on most occasions, especially with the shit he pulls off, but there are some exceptions. The biggest thing you could embarrass them with is a big spoiler but let's just say an indirect compliment could make him scream internally.

Mitchell (champion of the Ennoia of Desire, he basically gets to be almost immortal as long as he does the gods' dirty work) easily the most embarrassible (??) one out of the ashmix trio. My man cringes every time he has to hold a conversation with anyone. Pointing out basically anything he does whether positive or negative would do the trick. He is very confused when ppl can perceive him.

Phoenix (is having the worst time bc suddenly and for seemingly no reason she might be able to destroy the world and not a lot of ppl are happy about it) Girl has NO SHAME. It would be impressive to get her to show any sort of embarrassment. ...maybe except for the fact she has like -7 perception or the fact her and Theo met bc she broke his nose after he snitched on her for skipping class.

Theo ( just some guy helping his sister run a cafe, saving up for top surgery and suffering bc he's best friends with Phoenix and that means he doesn't get to know peace...ever) He has a pretty decent grasp on his emotions so it's not THAT EASY to embarrass him. He does tend to put other's needs before his own tho so I think just making him the center of attention for long enough would be enough

Star (Theo's oldest friend and a chaos gremlin who runs around using the fact that nobody suspects a small almost blind guy of smuggling illegal shit to, well, do exactly that) He's not someone who likes to show weakness, thanks to the social circles he tends to deal with, so he hides his embarrassment behind hostility. You could not tell if anything affects him or not. But there are some that tend to hit him hard. Specifically his financial situation or his ability/the reason his eyesight is fucked. He'd dislike you for it tho.

Taru-zai (Ennoia of Time and Space, in charge of running the jail between worlds and hunt down possible dangers to the order of the world) No.

So basically in a universe where Ségdae is in TWST, they're the stand-in Ancient Magic teacher for Trein (the man is getting close to retirement age), but they also teach biology and art.

They also have this weird friendship/pining/frustration over Crewel, which amuses all the staff except for Ségdae and Divus.

Also, they are a fucking UNIT! 210 cm (selkie babey!!!) and towers over everyone... but is a total sweetheart to everyone but Crowley o^v^o

there are several things about the universe that fundamentally change from THH-onward that have a significant effect on the trajectory of the series in an IF-verse

junko, specifically, is alive, and still has access to all of her resources Except mukuro

makoto never gained the title of Ultimate Hope. this is a makoto with WAY less credibility

the killing game never occurred beyond introducing the premise, meaning junko had no reason to put the sdr2 crew through a killing game, because it wouldn't invoke the same trauma response from makoto & co. UNLESS another killing game occurs

now personally i think the crew would step outside and mukuro would be arrested on sight Anyway because of the war crimes. but this wouldnt invoke junkos despair. she's got other shit to do. avoiding the future foundation is on her agenda. but getting her allies to the future foundation is high priority so they can get their memories back, and in particular makoto needs to get there because he's still super fucked up from getting stabbed by the spears of gungar.

but makoto is also the only person other than mukuro and jack who knows their peaceful(ish) high school life, and what the hell happened. so mukuro has two people she Knows wont stab her in the back. one of them is a serial killer who does whatever the hell she wants. and one of them is on the brink of death

makoto, remembers high school: take kyoko with you! shes the most trustworthy person we have

kyoko and mukuro, in sinc: no she is not

so here's how i think it pans out. i think of the cast, most of them are pretty happy to get to the future foundation, regain their memories, and learn what the hell is going on. sakura doesn't want to leave mukuro to fend for herself, but kyoko convinces her that the others need protection more, and mukuro can defend them both. mondo hates authority, but he wants his memories, so he makes a secret plan to get the memories back and get the hell out of dodge. and i think ultimately chihiro wants to help out mukuro squad, but she's better in front of a computer than in the field anyway.

and frankly, i think kyoko is just more interested in what's happening in mukuro's part of the deal. kyoko tends to calculate gains and losses very objectively, regardless of its effect on her or those around her. she can get her memories back whenever. a first person perspective on what junko's been up to and how to dismantle it? once in a lifetime chance.

so for the first leg of this journey to make their classmates filled with hope and junko filled with despair, it's JUST kyoko and mukuro - kyoko, who doesn't remember anything except what mukuro tells her and doesn't fully trust her, and mukuro, who whose explicit goal is to bring kyoko happiness but who still hasn't fully broken free of junkos manipulation, who still is doing this ultimately For Junko. so there's this fascinating dynamic of two people who rely on each other, who start to care for each other, but who both deep down have these layers of trauma barring them to truly Understand each other. mukuro is looking at kyoko and seeing their first year at hopes peak, meeting in the hallway, both knowing they are enemies but neither knowing how. kyoko is looking at mukuro and seeing junkos hair, junkos eyes, junkos clothes. they admire each other, as rivals, as newly found allies. but they do not See each other.

and then. first stop to keeping classmates from falling into despair? keep their family and friends from brutally killing each other.

I always enjoy deeply alien takes on Dialga and Palkia. (My own characterization of them is... Similar, but not. The way I write them, they SHOULD be alien to humans, but they're Not. Like the Great Ones of Bloodborne who desired children, the Creation Dragons desired companionship that wasn't each other. So when life evolved, they grew curious, and then attached-which caused their minds to slowly decohere and become closer to mortals.) This can and will pose Problems eventually.

i shared this story on reddit, but i’m copying it over here tumblr because it’s relevant:

picture this: it’s the year 2010 and i am a wee babey getting into fanfic on ye olde FFN leaving guest reviews because i was too scared to make an account. there was a bleach fic i recall on occasion -- i remember little of it now bar that it was a relatively long fic with abundant OCs and very little engagement. so every single chapter, i left a review. sometimes they were short, sometimes long, but i would search this fic everyday and was so excited when this fic updated and thought the author deserved reviews for their effort.

when they posted the last chapter, they thanked their reviewers for inspiring them to write, etc., and then addressed me directly, and i remember nothing from this fic 10+ years later except this tiny fragment from that final author's note:

in part, i finished this for you.

i don't know if this fic exists still, i cannot find it anymore, let alone remember the title or author, but that acknowledgement, the knowledge that a stranger in the universe wrote and finished a fic because i left comments every chapter, permanently attached me to the world of fanfiction, and here i am a full decade later still reading (and writing!) fics every single day.

i'm so incredibly glad i meant so much to them, but it also meant the world to that little 13 year old craving purpose and meaning.

I have seen more and more readers on Ao3 mentioning that they don’t read non finished fics.

And I am not here to tell you to read fics that aren’t completed yet, because it’s not my job.

But please, if you subscribe to this policy, be aware that this absolutely contributes to fics never being finished.

Because writing a fic, especially a multi-chaptered-one, takes a lot of time and effort and writers need positive feedback to make it worth it. So if they aren’t getting it, the chance of them dropping the project altogether is significantly higher.
