I think I need to accept that we're never going to be friends again the way we were ten years ago. We've switched worlds too thoroughly -- and you can't intellectually/ethically/morally inhabit both. Even if you could, it'd be too much of a reputational liability.

Maybe we'll talk occasionally about cats or new restaurants or stuff like that, but that's it. Learn to accept it or seethe forever.

I'm REALLY not big on guilting people for not replying to comments, please don't feel obligated to and please don't add more negative connotations to posting fic.

At worst making people feel guilty about not replying to comments is counterproductive and makes people feel bad about posting their fic if they don't have enough spoons to deal with comments as well. It's easy enough to see in author notes the silly things fic writers feel guilty about already, please don't add to that or people are liable to post even less.

AO3 is an archive. It's not social media and the commenting system is not designed in a format for conversation - it's literally there to say nice things about the fic. Replies are a nice bonus but that's all they are.

There are LOTS of other ways to encourage fandom engagement that don't involve replying to comments - things like promoting other people's work, chatting about ideas and prompts and being a sounding board or a beta. People have different tolerances for how much work they can do around fic (especially ND folk who feel guilty about enough tasks they find overwhelming already).

Reminders for new ao3 users (in no particular order):

- filter your searches like you would on a library website or in an online catalogue

- don’t post placeholders, fic searches, or recommendations as fics. DON’T! It’s against ao3 TOS

- there is no algorithm. ao3 sorts by date posted/updated unless you filter with specific search criteria

- ao3 is a non profit. that means it doesn’t sell ads to make money — it only survives on donations. this is why it can show you so many fics without ever flashing an ad or pop up at you!

- report fics that break TOS when you see them (I.e., placeholder fics, searches) to help other users navigate better

- the tag “dead dove, do not eat” doesn’t equate to gore/awfulness automatically. it is a complementary tag that enhances current tags. E.g., if the fic is tagged “gore” and “dead dove, do not eat” the author really wants you to mind the gore tag

- most fandoms have a variation of “no beta, we die like (x character)” and they all link back to the “No beta” tag

- publishing a new fic sometimes means it won’t show up in the fandom/pairing tag for a few minutes

- subscribers receive update emails at different times, depending on when you update/publish your fic. there’s no good way to predict when an e-mail will be sent — it can be in 30 seconds, or two hours later

- some fics are restricted by authors to those with ao3 accounts only. if you see a blue lock in the upper right corner, that fic is only visible to logged in ao3 users

- you can block commenters now! this didn’t use to be a thing

- updating a fic just to stay at the top of the pairing tag/fandom tag is a dick move. unless you’re legitimately editing or adding chapters, this just annoys readers and fellow authors, and people will skip over your fic

The Olmü Galina took him to was several inches short of a good stud, but had the sleek build and dunny pelt considered fashionable among grooms and footmen. His nose quivered as she spoke, whiskers splayed to their most alert positions before folding back along his snout.

“What’s in it for me then?” He had a reedy voice for a boar, though at his size he might not yet be full grown. Caiyur couldn’t profess to be an expert at aging the otterfolk; he’d struggled to tell apart most of their staff, save for the housekeeper and head butler. “I’m not in the habit of fetching my folks for the likes of you.”

Galina cocked a him, arms crossing to match his. “We’re old friends, aren’t we, Devrim?”

His fur bristled, one paw lifting to smooth it down flat. “You’re a frequent client. An old employer.”

“I’ve scratched your back and you’ve scratched mine,” she reminded him, impatience seeping into her voice. “Call us allies, if it makes you feel better, but I’ve done more for you than just business.”

I started by telling myself I shouldn't feel bad that I didn't get all my planned chores done: Saturday is a rest day, and we've just finished three weeks of crunch at work. (Next week might also be crunch but probably not; the product ships at the end of the week but we should be in good enough shape already.)

But then I realized: I ran three errands in the morning, and did three chores in the evening--even if one of the chores was just "cook a healthy dinner" and two of the chores were banking-related on a website. (But one involved sending text messages, and one involved an actual phone call to customer service, so I can't even really say they were just on a website.) That's six things I got done on a rest day. I may have overscheduled by saying I'd do at least eight things, but still, six things is very good.
