#everything after the confession is a relief for Raskolnikov!!

I finally finished reading Crime and Punishment, and was chatting with my twin about it and she asked my thoughts on the epilogue, as there's some debate if Dostoyevsky had meant to write it or was made to by his publishers (we are of the opinion it was always meant to be because Marmeladov foreshadows it in his drunk monologues at the beginning) - I thought it was a nice way to complete Rodya's journey but wasn't necessary, I loved the main story ending on his confession. But I'm still thinking about how she phrased her opinion of it:
"Like it actually doesn't matter what comes next, the actual punishment is over"
And that's exactly it.
#she's such a smart reader#half my fun in reading c&p was talking to her about it and hearing all her insights#but that is exactly the point!#everything after the confession is a relief for Raskolnikov!!#his punishment is actually over! and it was all self-inflicted because he wasn't one of his super-humans! he was just human!#ugh good fucking book#that Dostoevsky sure can write such good human characters#book club
