MARCH 11: JAMES REDFORD & AST BRING SHARE THE BEAT TO SAN FRAN!
Tuesday, January 18, 2011
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – January 18, 2011 – The American Society of Transplantation (AST) and James Redford will host the seventh annual Share the Beat® event, benefiting organ donation awareness and transplantation research through the AST endowment and the Redford AnimAction Project: It’s A RAP!, an educational program dedicated to raising organ donation awareness. This year’s event will take place at the Regency Center in San Francisco on Friday, March 11, 2011, at 8:00 pm.
“We take Share the Beat on the road to a different city each year in order to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation,” states Redford. “More than 100,000 people are currently on the waiting list for a transplant, and each day, 19 people die waiting for transplants that can't take place because of the shortage of donated organs.”
The evening will feature musical appearances from Alex Band (The Calling), whose song "Wherever You Will Go" topped Billboard magazine’s Best of the Decade Adult Top 40 Songs in 2009,
as well as Grammy-nominated songwriter Greg Barnhill, whose songs have been embraced by artists including Etta James, Martina McBride, Jessica Simpson and Chicago. Up-and-coming artists Chris Pierce and Shasta Baca will also take the stage.
“I have been personally affected by our country’s dire need for organ donors,” states Alex Band. “There is so much we can do to raise awareness for this cause, and I won’t stop until the job is done. It only takes a few minutes to register to become a donor, and you can wind up saving the lives of many.”
Throughout the night, several people who have been affected by the power of transplantation will share their personal stories, including James Redford, who received a life-saving liver transplant in 1993, and Reg Green, whose 7-year-old son Nicholas was killed in Italy in 1994. Green and his wife made the decision to donate their son’s organs, changing the lives of seven Italian adults and children.
Also in attendance will be Janet Brine, whose daughter Eva Markvoort died in March of cystic fibrosis. Markvoort opens up about her life, family and experiences, including undergoing a lung transplant and her subsequent transplant rejection in the Oprah Winfrey Network Documentary Film Club selection 65_RedRoses.
"James [Redford], Reg and Janet are wonderful ambassadors for organ donation,” states AST President Dr. Maryl Johnson. “Organ donation not only impacts transplant recipients and their loved ones, it can also offer grieving families a sense of comfort that their loved ones saved others in need.”
Tickets to the event start at $55 and can be purchased at www.sharethebeat.org.

I watched 65_RedRoses tonight and even though I am still sitting here crying I'm really glad I watched it. One of my closest friends has Cystic Fibrosis and so I've been trying to do all I can to get as much of an understanding of it as I can.
Eva was also amazing. She was so positive and beautiful and she makes me want go to out and try to be better and nicer to people.
I know I don't usually make posts like this, but I feel like this is important and I wish I could do more to help out. You guys should all go watch this movie. It's really makes you think about life
RIP to Eva, Kina, and Meg. I wish there was more we could have done for you

Eva Markvoort Taught Us How To Live In Her Death
Eva Markvoort was the type of person I wish I had know in life, yet I’m grateful she was able to use her dying to give hope to so many. From CNN:
“For the last four of her 25 years, former beauty queen Eva Markvoort blogged about her struggle with terminal cystic fibrosis. “It’s kinda tough to hear, but I can say it with a smile,” she says in a video entry, “my life is ending.”

Organ donation is something that can cause controversy in a split second, firstly because organ donation mostly involves death -with the exception of kidneys-. It is so important to sign up to be an organ donor, no one is immortal, we all face the end one day & what better way to do one last amazing thing than to give the gift of life to someone in need. This is Caleigh, she has Cystic Fibrosis & is in desperate need for a double lung transplant in order to continue living & enjoying her family. Caleigh was recently moved up on the transplant list so hopefully she can be next to receive her transplant. If this video is not enough to inspire at least one person to sign up or to even donate blood then go ahead & watch this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V--DNTRZAko & this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izF9NVExJBI & ABSOLUTELY this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viNEhFQe5o8 You can change someones life forever upon losing yours. I know it sounds morbid & scary but who needs their organs in the grave? Just a thought. By donating your organs you can save 8 lives & improve 50 lives by donating tissue. 18 people die everyday waiting for an organ. Many of these people are young people leaving behind hopes, dreams, families, new spouses, children, friends, etc. Your family can feel the satisfaction of knowing that they have given someone the gift of LIFE. If you are not yet an organ donor please consider it, watch these videos & sign up: http://www.organdonor.gov/howhelp/index.html Myths on organ donation if you have doubts http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/consumer-health/in-depth/organ-donation/art-20047529 If you are already a donor or signed up to become one, or even donated blood I would love to know!

"Eva's 65 Red Roses"
http://65redroses.livejournal.com
By Johanna Spinks
Oil on canvas via palette knife
I was inspired to paint this posthumous portrait of Eva Markvoort, my second one, after hearing about her brave battle with Cystic Fibrosis on the documentary 64 Red Roses.
Eva ultimately lost the battle against CF, but not before raising huge awareness and money for CF, and warming so many hearts with her courage along the way.
It has taken me quite a while to finish this portrait but I felt Eva's spirit along the way.

"i have fallen in love more than once. i am so blessed. sometimes i wonder if it is simply the act of falling that i love so much? but then again.. what is wrong with that? i believe, more than anything else, that LOVE is worth it. the world is better with more love then less. there is no limited amount of love. it is endless. limitless. without borders. why not love MORE? harder? deeper? with everything we have? what is there to be scared of? even if rejected or lost or turned away…we still learn there is no negative. LOVE. fiercely. with strength. passion and conviction.”-Eva Markvoort 10/01/2009

Now I've heard of Eva Markvoort before, but am yet to watch the documentary of her life.
Eva had CF just like me, and this her farewell video that was uploaded about a month before she died. I wasn't sure whether I should watch this or not, because it is sad and it is morbid and it's all those things people sweep under the carpet and pretend don't happen, but I think it was important that I did. I don't think people realise that this is a reality for not only us with CF, but people with chronic degenerative health conditions - we all die in the end, but Eva was only 25 years old and she'd known it was coming since she was a child - that's the scary thing. Other people can afford to forget about the end and leave it aside until later, but when you know it's coming, it's hard to bear. She's amazing though, so positive y'know? I hope when I come to that that I won't be as sad as I have been lately and I'll be grateful for everyone and everything and not living in regret of what I didn't do.
She was a brave lady and I look forward to watching the documentary 65 Red Roses. RIP Eva x

My portrait of Eva Markvoort is coming along.
Painting a hand with palette knife is a challenge. And then all those roses I am about to add. Come back to see the finish.

EVERYBODY IN THE US PLEASE TURN ON YOUR TV ON OWN NETWORK.
The movie 65_RedRoses is playing right now. It's about the story Eva, a girl with Cystic Fibrosis (if you don't know what it is, best way to learn about it).
I feel like you Tumblr people could really connect to it, since it's also the story of an online friendship between her and two other girls, and how they help each other hang onto life.
Go watch it!
