“Can you guys tell me where we're going?” Catherine “Venus” Woods drowsily asked her friends, as they helped pack clothes in her Gothic bedroom. It was the day before her 19th birthday, almost 7:30 in the morning, and they wouldn't share any information.
“Nope!” Carmen “Honey Lemon” Lopez, aged 20, shook her head, her voice filled with her trademark enthusiasm. “It's a surprise!”
Venus' childhood friend, 20-year-old Fred Frederickson the IV, nodded in agreement. “Yeah; the wait will be worth it!”
She giggled. “Where are Wasabi, Hiro, and Tadashi?”
“Renting an R.V.,” Ethel “Gogo” Tomago, 19 years old, and just so happened to be Honey Lemon's girlfriend, replied.
“Ooh, so we're traveling?” The almost birthday girl grinned with excitement. “Cool!”
“Still not telling you where we're going,” Gogo smirked.
“Darn,” Venus pouted; she walked to the ocean-themed bathroom, to grab her hygiene products.
At the R.V. lot, freshly turned 21-year-old Wesley “Wasabi” Ginger, and brothers 19-year-old Tadashi and 14-year-old Hiro Hamada, were having a look at the suggestions provided by the dealer. The younger Hamada was feeling winded when perfectionist Wasabi turned down vehicles for specific reasons; the bed's mattress was too firm, or too soft, there was dirt from the previous consumers, the seats were too hard, the vehicle itself was too small, etc. He considered the dealer a saint for his patience. “Wasabi, we've looked at over a thousand R.V.'s here,” Hiro groaned in annoyance, “My feet are killing me; just pick one!”
“It needs to be perfect,” Wasabi insisted. Venus was his girlfriend of several months, almost half a year; he loved her with all his heart, and wanted her special day to be amazing, memorable, and everything she wanted it to be.
What are their secret plans?
A trip to Disneyland! It had been Venus' birthday wish for since she was little, but due to the money, and conflicting schedules, it never came true, until now.
They couldn't wait to see her face when they would present the surprise to her! If only her boyfriend would make a decision on their ride, though...
As they looked over yet another choice, Tadashi turned to the dealer. “We're taking his girlfriend to Disneyland for her birthday tomorrow,” He explained, “He wants everything perfect for it.”
“Ah,” Daniel, the dealer, nodded, “Understandable. I would do the same for my partner.”
“But not at a snail's pace?” Hiro smirked.
Tadashi snickered. “When you want to do something for your girlfriend, you'll get it.”
“Tadashi!” He blushed furiously.
“What?” His brother laughed. “I've seen the way you and Carrie interact; you're definitely smitten for each other.” Carrie Francess was a fellow teen genius at the group's college, the “San Fransokyo Institute of Technolgy”, specializing in hydrology. Hiro had fallen head over heels for her, though wouldn't spill to his friends out of pride. They figured it out on their own, and helped him woo her. One thing led to another, and they became official.
“Well, we wouldn't be as mushy as lover-boy over there, and future mrs. lover-boy,” Hiro gestured to Wasabi, who was looking over the interior like a crime investigator.
The vehicle was a Mirada Select 37RB with an eye-catching black, grey, white, and blue paint job. The walls and furniture had a white/cream hue, easy on the eyes, and dark wood cabinets. The twin-size bed had a nice, comfortable mattress, the couch folded out into a doable futon, the appliances didn't have crumbs or stains from previous consumers' food, and no strange dishes were in the cabinets. “Okay,” Wasabi nodded, “We'll take this one.”
“Finally!” Hiro sighed in relief, flopping in the driver's seat, as the paperwork was looked over, and signed appropriately.
“I'll tell Fred we've got a winner, and that we'll be over there soon,” Tadashi took out his phone, and texted his boyfriend, who was labeled as “Fredalicious <3” in his contacts, the good news. Once the signing was done, the amount of rent was paid for, and Wasabi's car was locked and emptied, he took the wheel. Tadashi was in the passenger seat, while Hiro lounged on the couch to rest his legs. Wasabi had made him keep his shoes off the couch to keep it clean, and he begrudgingly took them off. He took out his Nintendo Switch, and continued playing “Super Mario Galaxy”, on the All-Stars three-pack, from where he last left off.
“Fred got my text,” Tadashi told Wasabi, “He and the girls know we'll be there after we get mine and Hiro's stuff from home. Everything's packed, done after your nagging,” He snickered.
Wasabi smirked. “See? It's a good idea to pack ahead of time, isn't it?”
“Yes, Father,” Tadashi joked, and they laughed together. Hiro was completely oblivious, as he swam at a beach galaxy. “This is a really nice R.V.; Venus is going to love it.”
“Anything for her,” The driver agreed, safely guiding the monster vehicle along the road, “She deserves the best; and she's getting it.”
He stopped in front of the Lucky Cat Cafe, where the Hamadas lived in the loft above. “I'll help you guys with your stuff,” He offered.
“Thanks,” Tadashi nodded, “Hiro? We're getting our stuff.” The teen genius was absorbed into his game. “Hiro? Hey, Hiro!” He walked over, and nudged his little brother's shoulder, making him jump.
“AH!”
“Come on, jumper boy; we're getting our luggage.”
Hiro paused the game, and followed them out. “Mario was Jumpman, by the way.”
“Tomato, tom-ah-to; same thing,” Tadashi teased with a smirk; Hiro playfully sneered at him, as they all walked in.
“Hey, boys!” Hiro and Tadashi's Aunt Cass greeted them from behind the counter. “I saw the R.V. when you pulled in; it's beautiful!”
“Thanks; Venus is going to love it, and it'll fit everyone.”
“It took Wasabi hours to pick it,” Hiro smirked.
Tadashi laughed. “Not hours, knucklehead,” He tussled his wild, black hair, and playfully pushed his head. “An hour and a half at most. Let's get our stuff.”
The three boys walked upstairs to the living quarters of the cafe owner and her genius nephews. Hiro's side of the room, unsurprisingly, had clothes, papers, and action figures on the floor, while Tadashi's side was neat. Not Wasabi-neat, but nonetheless not a pigsty. “Good Lord,” Wasabi muttered under his breath in horror, eyeing the mess like it contained decomposing bodies. The two Hamadas got their respective luggage, and followed their muscular friend downstairs. He already had his stuff handy in his car, before choosing their mode of transportation.
Cass turned to them when they returned, and hugged all three firmly. “Have fun, boys! Take lots of pictures, and bring me back a souvenir!”
“We will,” Tadashi beamed, “Both things.” They turned to Mochi when he meowed. “We'll find something for you too, Mochi,” He chuckled, and the cat looked happy, “Aunt Cass, we'll call you at our next stop; whether it's in our hotel, or on the way.”
“Good,” She nodded, “Be careful! And Hiro, bring something back for Carrie, okay?” She winked.
“I will,” He blushed deeply in embarrassment.
“I'll make sure he does,” Tadashi joked.
“Dude!”
Wasabi snickered in his hand, and gestured to the door. “Why don't we go ahead, and grab Fred and the girls? They might be long done by now.” He was eager to see Venus react to their ride; he knew that she would love it.
After more goodbyes with Cass, they returned to the R.V. “Tadashi, can you drive on the way there, to the resort?” Wasabi requested.
“Want to spend time with V, huh?” He smirked.
“Yes,” Wasabi blushed, “So what? She's my girlfriend. I'll drive back.”
“Deal.”
They made themselves comfortable, then headed for the Woods residence. At a red light, a smile grew on Wasabi's face, as he thought of his girlfriend; he could already see her jumping with joy at her surprise when she would receive it.
With Fred and the girls, the packing was done. Thankfully, Venus was still oblivious to the surprise coming. For the R.V. ride, she was wearing a pair of black and orange soft shorts with a white Mickey Mouse pumpkin on the left front side, and a pair of white bats above, a black slightly cropped hoodie with orange drawstrings, and a graphic of Mickey dressed as a skeleton, black crew socks with yellow cat eyes all over, and black Converse low-tops. She had her black Kuromi rolling suitcase filled with everything she needed for the trip, along with a pink striped pouch, from Victoria's Secret, with her toothbrush and toothpaste.
She was following her man's footsteps in organization.
They were all sitting at the kitchen table, eating Halloween-themed poptarts. “The boys are coming, Freddie?” Honey asked.
“Yep,” Fred nodded, “They should be here in a few minutes.”
Venus crunched on a tiny sprinkle after picking it off her plate. “Hopefully just a few minutes,” She smirked. She missed her boyfriend.
Malia Woods, Venus' mother, came out of the downstairs bedroom in her nightgown and slippers. “Morning, kids. Happy early birthday, sweetie.” She kissed her daughter's cheek, as Fred, Honey, and Gogo greeted her back.
“Morning, Mom.”
“You excited for tomorrow?”
“Yep. Though I'd be more so, if I knew where we're going,” Venus giggled.
“Not telling you,” Gogo said.
Malia snickered. “You'll have to wait until you get there.”
“You and Dad aren't coming?”
“Sorry, we can't; Rob has work, and I need to keep Jack out of trouble.” Jack was Venus' older brother; a real bully, and borderline criminal.
“O-okay,” Venus nodded, “I'll bring back souvenirs for all of you, wherever we're going.”
“Even Jack?” Gogo raised an eyebrow.
“Yes, even Jack,” She giggled.
“That's sweet of you,” Malia patted her shoulder.
Robert, Venus' father, came out next in a t-shirt, slippers, and lounge pants. “Morning, birthday girl.” He kissed her dark hair.
“Morning, Dad.”
“When are Wasabi, Tadashi, and Hiro coming over with your ride?”
“Should be any minute now, Mr. Woods,” Fred replied, “Dashi texted me.”
“Okay,” Robert nodded, “You kids want some coffee?”
“No thanks,” They all kindly declined.
“We don't want to be a hindrance.” Honey added.
“You won't be...” Robert started to assure them, but stopped when his eyes caught the window. “That must be your ride.”
Venus made a mad dash for the window, Honey narrowly catching her plate before it could tip over, and had a look. Her green eyes widened at the impressive R.V. parked outside. “Whoa! It's awesome!”
They waited for the three boys to come inside, and see her parents before departing. “Hey!” She made a beeline for Wasabi, as he kneeled down to her level, and hugged him excitedly. “The R.V. looks awesome!”
“It better be; Wasabi took forever to pick it out,” Hiro smirked, as Tadashi greeted Malia and Robert.
Venus giggled. “Ah.”
“Only the best for you, V,” Wasabi smiled lovingly at his girl, ignoring Hiro's gag gesture.
She blushed deeply, feeling bashful. He always had that affect on her. “Where are we going?” She tried to ask.
Wasabi smirked. “Not telling you.” He chuckled when she tried her cute, pout face, complete with fluttering eyelashes. “That's not working this time, baby.” He playfully prodded her nose, and kissed her forehead over her bangs, then straightened up. “Let's get your luggage.” Venus giggled, and walked closely next to him, holding his hand. “You look adorable.”
“Thanks.” They headed upstairs to her room, as their friends talked with her parents. They had gathered at the table, and discretely discussed the trip; recommendations on rides, restaurants, and shops for the birthday girl, and promises to bring photos and souvenirs back.
“Did you use those bags I recommended?”
“Yep,” Venus nodded, and unzipped her suitcase to let him see, as he knelt down, “I have a top and overalls skirt in here, a backpack in the middle, and a swimsuit in this one.” There was also a Halloween-themed sandwich bag with hair accessories inside, a pouch made from Gothic mermaid scales print fabric that held jewelry, and her pink pouch with her hygiene products.
“I taught you well,” Wasabi nuzzled his nose in her soft hair, and kissed her head, as she blushed and giggled.
“I learned from the best,” She agreed. They shared a kiss for a few seconds; her tiny hands were on his cheeks, while he had his large hands on her back and shoulders.
After they separated, he looked around to make sure she didn't miss anything; but he noticed that the top of her dresser was now empty. He turned to her, after spotting a big pouch in her suitcase. “You're bringing your princess dolls?”
“Y-yeah,” Venus nodded shyly. She had all the Disney Princess dolls released for the film “Ralph Breaks the Internet”, the big ones, in her possession, including copies with new outfits, and separate clothing packs. “Um, f-for the R.V. ride. I don't know how long we'll be driving.” She also had some portable video games prepared as well, with a Nintendo DS, and a 3DS.
“You're so cute,” He chuckled, and straightened up, as she zipped her suitcase shut. “Let's go downstairs.” She grabbed her purse, which resembled a tiny, black cat backpack, and he rolled her luggage down, not taking no for an answer, as they headed down to the living room. “Hey, guys. We're ready when you are.” They all stood up, the couples holding hands.
“Okay, bye, sweetie!” Malia hugged Venus firmly, and kissed her cheek. “Have fun!”
Robert shared an embrace with her next. “Bye, sweetheart. Have fun, and be careful. Call us when you get there, okay?”
“Will do,” She nodded; he kissed her hair, and they drew away.
“Take care of my daughter,” Robert turned to Wasabi.
“I will; I promise.”
“Good.”
“Bye, kids!” Malia waved, as they all headed out. “You all have fun!”
“And be careful!” Robert added.
“We will!” Honey nodded, her arm holding Gogo by the shoulders, as they went out the door.
The gang filed into the R.V., and stored their luggage in the bedroom. “Who gets the bed?” Hiro asked.
“I think Venus should,” Fred replied, “Since she's the birthday girl; Wasabi can take it too!”
She blushed, and giggled. “Thanks.” After the vehicle was locked, and everyone was settled in, with Venus in the bedroom, Fred in the passenger seat, and Hiro, Wasabi, and the girls in the booth, Tadashi started driving along the road.
Since the birthday girl couldn't hear them in the bedroom, from the low engine rumbling, her friends discussed plans in the Disney parks. “What're we doing for breakfast?” Hiro asked.
Wasabi took a list out of his jeans pocket. “We'll be going to Goofy's Kitchen, since it's in the area; we have a reservation.”
“Yay! We can meet characters there!” Honey cheered.
“Oh great,” Gogo muttered.
“Come on, Gogo; it'll be fun!” Honey insisted.
“If any of those mascots come near me, I'm knocking them out.”
“Don't,” Wasabi sighed, though was stifling laughter at the mental image, “We'll get in trouble; and we can't spoil Venus' big day.”
“... Fine,” Gogo caved.
“Yay! What about dinner tonight?” Honey asked the organizer of the group.
“We'll stop somewhere on the way,” Wasabi replied, “There's a burger joint near the parks that has a 50s theme to it. The prices are low, and the ratings are high.”
“Sounds great!” Honey nodded.
After a few more minutes of discussing, Wasabi glanced over at the bedroom. “I'm going to spend some time with Venus,” He slid out of the booth, as the two girlfriends moved to the couch together, and walked to the bed. His girlfriend was laying on her stomach, absently dressing her Snow White doll in a blue “Lucky 7” shirt-dress, and yellow sneakers, her movie outfit laid on the covers. Venus' sneakers were on the floor, like they had been since the group's departure. She was still oblivious to what was coming. “Hey, cutie.”
She looked up, and smiled. “Hi. We almost to... wherever we're going?” She giggled.
“It's still going to be a while,” He replied, “You want some company?”
Venus nodded. “I'd love that, thanks.” She put her doll and little outfit in the big pouch, and patted at the bed with her left hand.
He left his black jikatabi shoes on the floor, and crawled over next to her. “So, you like the R.V.?”
“I love it,” She nodded, “It's amazing; so beautiful, and cozy.”
When she yawned drowsily, he held her close with one arm. “You tired?”
“Yeah,” She replied, “I don't usually get up at 7 in the morning. It's usually 9 at earliest.”
“If you want a nap until lunch, then go ahead. I'll stay with you.”
“Thanks, babe.” She snuggled in his shoulder, and let her eyes close. Her whole body relaxed in his loving hold, as she drifted off to sleep.
Wasabi smiled down at his tiny girlfriend's sweet, peaceful face; she was so beautiful. He tenderly brushed her long bangs from the right side of her face, and tucked them behind her ear. Words couldn't express how much he loved her; he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He hoped they would get married, find their own place, and start a family. He couldn't live without her; frankly, he didn't want to try. He laid down on the bed, being gentle with Venus to avoid disrupting her slumber, and then drifted off to sleep himself.
Outside the bedroom, Hiro had switched seats with the girls; he was in the booth, continuing his Suoer Mario Galaxy game, while Honey and Gogo were getting snuggly on the couch. He averted his eyes when the makeout session started; watching people kissing made him uncomfortable.
At one point, they grabbed takeout from Noodleburger for lunch, waking the couple in the bedroom to give them their usual orders.
On the bed, Venus ate her chicken nuggets and French fries, being careful with crumbs, while Wasabi had his own favorite: the Cock-a-Noodle-Doo burger. Fred helped Tadashi with his food, which was a copy of the birthday girl's order, as he drove; he himself had a classic Noodleburger. The two girlfriends each had a copy of Wasabi's order, and shared a large bag of fries. “Can I have a hint?”
“Of what?” Wasabi asked cluelessly.
“Where we're going.”
“Nope,” He shook his head with a snicker.
“Please?” She tried to grin cutely.
“Do you want to ruin the big surprise?” He chuckled.
“Yes!” She giggled.
He laughed, and held her closer. “You're silly.” She squealed, and her shoulders shot up to her ears when he tickled her neck for a second. “You'll have to wait, until we get there.”
“When are we getting there?”
“It should be tonight, after we have dinner at a burger joint I found.”
“'Kay.”
When they stopped at the burger joint for dinner that evening, they all went inside. Since Venus still wore her shorts, a trio of teenage boys gawked at her long, pale legs. But Wasabi holding his nervous girlfriend close by her shoulders with an intimidating stare directed at them, along with a killer glare from Gogo scared them into averting their eyes.
After finishing, they were back on the road. Wasabi and Venus were on the bed again, with Tadashi and Fred up front, while Hiro and the girls were in the booth, and on the couch, respectively. This time around, Venus was playing “Mario Party Top 100” on her 3DS, playing as Rosalina, while laying in Wasabi's lap. He smiled down at her, keeping his large, gentle hand in her hair; she was adorable when in deep concentration. He chuckled when she cheered after winning a game. “Congratulations.”
“Thanks,” She giggled, “It was a hard one too.”
Before long, when nighttime loomed, a certain theme park area came in view. When the vehicle slowed to a stop in the parking lot, Tadashi made the three-word announcement they were all waiting for, interrupting makeout sessions between two of the three couples inside.
“Here we are!”
