Part III After travelling the world Mahlangu started her own scholl back at home. Teaching children the Ndebele art, how to paint and designs compositions. “It is my passion to transfer this skill to the generations after me. I want them to learn where it comes from, why the Ndebele people paint their houses and monuments and how we made the paint from our natural resources such as soil.” – Mahlangu on an interview to SLA At the age of 84, Mahlangu still exhibits all around the world. South African artist, Esther Mahlangu, is known for her paintings and murals that celebrate Ndebele heritage. Bright, bold colors, delicate intricacies, and shapes keep the eye engaged, with patterns inspired by Ndebele women and their traditional painting.

Check out the latest special tribute to her in the heart of NYC, painted by Imani Shanklin Roberts. Day 22: Meet Esther Nikwambi Mahlangu If ever there was a symbol of longevity and consistency in self expression - this is it. Easily transcending time. She's collaborated with brands like BMW, Fiat and Belvedere amongst others. Her art references stem from the patterns found in clothing and jewellery of the Ndebele people. Part II Esther Mahlangu gained international visibility in 1984 after André Magnin, a french curator, saw her house and invited her to be part of the Magiciens de la Terre exhibition in Paris. In 1991 Mahlangu was commissioned by BMW to paint a BMW 525i as a mark of the end of Apartheid. She was the first woman to be invited to participate on the BMW Art Car project. Mahlangu was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver by the South African presidency for her contributions to the development of indigenous Ndebele art. She was commissioned by brands all over the world to paint the Ndebele art on their products. For Mahlangu it’s not only about painting but also about keeping the heritage of the Ndebele tribe alive. She reimagined the traditional Ndebele Art and brought it to contemporary mediums. Mahlangu paints without rulers, with brushes and chicken feathers directly on the canvas without sketching.
