ennis del-mar is sunshine. weighed with his responsibilities to his wife and daughters, he’s at ease with what he has, his happiness be damned. he’d never let himself want more. he’s rooted to the life he lives with. he has adapted to and accepts that the world around him is too dangerous to make space for the things he desires because that’s all he’s known, that there’s always been no room for him.
jack, he is midnight rain, he wants more, he craves more. he’s a dreamer, always had been. he wants that pain and anguish that comes with living. he’d turn his life upside down in the blink of an eye for a chance to get something he never could ever achieve, because as we know, like many of jacks ideas, they never come to pass.

Happily Ever After
Relationship: Jack Twist x Male!Reader
Fandom: Brokeback Mountain
Request: No
Warnings: Fluff, Brief Strong Language, Mentions of Ennis and Unwelcome Feelings
Word Count: 1,805
Masterlist: Here
Jake Gyllenhaal & Co. Masterlist: Here
Summary: Sometimes, Prince Charming is just a few years away.
As much as he wanted, Jack knew he couldn’t wait forever. Every year that he waited for Ennis to come to him, took something away from his heart. He knew why Ennis never did, hell, he understood better than anyone else. But that didn’t mean that the pain didn’t go away. The pain of being put aside for him to live a life that they both knew he didn’t like, with his only bright side being his girls. Yes, Ennis Del Mar was a stubborn son of a bitch, and so was Jack Twist. Which meant they both held out hope that the other one would come to their senses and leave.
After his last visit with Ennis, Jack decided enough was enough. He couldn’t continue on meeting up with him every once in a while to spend the night together, and then return him back to his wife and kids the next morning. His heart hurt to do it, but it was for the best. Ennis looked relieved and depressed at the news, which didn’t make dropping him off any easier on Jack. But it had to be done, for both of their sakes. Which lead Jack to wandering across America. The divorce had put things into perspective for him, and now he was trying to enjoy life as best he could.
Eventually, Jack settled back on Brokeback Mountain. The place that felt more like home than anywhere else. The man felt the sun start to peak over the horizon and onto his face from the window in his bedroom. He groaned and turned over, but felt something heavy and warm wrapped around him. The warm something against his back, and the distinct lack of coffee smell let him know that his companion had yet to wake up and get started on the day today. Jack heard a groan behind him, and felt the warm body nuzzle further into his neck from behind. The early morning, the smells of the mountain, and the company with him pulled Jack into a welcome memory.
~
“‘Scuse me, sir?” Jack turned around and beheld a man with a beautiful, but worn Stetson on his head. The espresso brown color complimented the mystery man’s skin, eyes, and the little bit of hair peaking through.
“Anyone sittin’ here?” The mystery man asked, and pointed to the only other available seat at the bar. Jack shook his head and motioned for the man to sit down, which he did. Flagging down the bartender, he heard a honey smooth voice order a double whiskey on the rocks. He sounded like a man after Jack’s heart.
“Whatcha doin’ in a place like this? You look like a city boy.” Jack’s eyebrows shot up to the top of his head as he slowly looked over his shoulder at the man. The look he was giving him must have been enough to convey the emotion he felt being called a city boy, because the mystery man started to talk once more.
“Oh, ‘m sorry. Me and my big mouth. I-I-I meant that you look really clean cut for being out in a workin’ part of town like this. Not that you…” he trailed off, mumbling to himself about the trouble his mouth was about to get him into. The man reminded Jack a lot of him when he was younger and more full of vigor. He started to chuckle lightly as he turned to face the man more.
“You’re alrigh’, I suppose. What’s your name?” The whiskey in his hands felt warmer than usual, as Jack watched the man’s face. The man supplied him with his name, and let himself roll it over his tongue a couple times before giving him his own. It was strange for Jack to be back in this position all these years later, now weathered and hurt. But it reminded him of the good times he had, and hoped for more to come.
“So, what brings you out here, Jack?” He asked, nursing the whiskey in his hands. He laughed humorlessly and thought about his answer.
“Just tired of living for everyone else. All my folks ran me off, so I’m just wanderin’ now. What about you? Your folks run you off?” A flash of blonde hair and a white hat passed over his mind, but the response wasn’t right.
“I guess I’m the same. I’m tired of survivin’ for everyone else. I wanna live for me.” And like that, the sweet chocolate brown eyes flashed away from memory. The gruff voice was replaced by this honey laced one. Same situation, different outcome. It took Jack a long time to realize that this was the beginning of the rest of his life.
~
Being pulled back into the present, soft kisses were pressed against Jack’s shoulders, neck, and back. He hummed at the affection and let himself sink further into the embrace. The head that the devilish lips were attached to peaked over his shoulder and came into view.
“Good morning, cowboy.” His partner said, voice stifled with sleep. He dropped his head on Jack’s chest and let the other man card his hands through his hair.
“Good morning, beau.” Jack responded as he pressed a small kiss to his head. They laid there for a moment more before his partner had to get up, and he made it known. Groaning, he shuffled over Jack, stretched, and walked over to grab a pair of jeans off the floor. Jack simply admired the man from behind, and made no move to get out of bed just yet.
“You wan’ some coffee, cowboy?” He asked, hand waiting on the door. Jack leveled him a deadpan look.
“Does that damn rooster wake us up every morning?” The man laughed as he walked out the door of their bedroom, and left Jack laying down in their shared bed. He knew he needed to get up. He had to help with taking care of their ranch, but everything seemed peaceful right now. He’d hate to disturb it, but it needed to be done. After a few minutes of staying in the warm bed, and letting the sunrise get him awake, Jack stood and went to go find a pair of jeans and a shirt. He stuffed his feet into a pair of socks, before grabbing another flannel shirt and heading to the kitchen.
The sight was something to behold when he finally arrived in the kitchen. His partner stood with his back to the threshold, and lost in his own world. He hummed quietly as the coffee was brewing on the stovetop, with the radio guiding him along in tune and tempo. As he watched the man in the kitchen go about his routine, Jack ran his hands over the flannel in his hands that he was going to offer. Their life together so far flashed in his head as he quietly observed. He came up behind the shirtless man and wrapped his arms around his shoulders, while tucking his head into the little spot where the neck met the shoulder. Jack felt his partner’s head tip back onto his own shoulder and the two began to sway gently. The music, the smell of the coffee, and the sound of the great outdoors that awaited them all helped set the mood of the morning.
Both were just content. They were content to be with each other, content to live where they did, and content to be themselves. It was easier to be themselves away from the prying eyes of society. The same ones that called their lifestyle sinful while having multiple affairs. But that didn’t matter out here. Here, they were just there. No heavy deadlines, or appearances to keep. No watching what they say, or how they act. It was freeing to be them out here. Jack watched with droopy eyes as his partner placed several spoonfuls of sugar into his mug and went to add a splash of milk. While Jack didn’t need the milk, it was a nice touch when they could afford it. He watched the man fix his own cup of coffee before dragging them both over to the table in the dining room. Jack had totally missed the food that was already there. How long had it been that his partner left their bedroom?
“Here you go, cowboy. Eat up. We’ve gotta go repair that fence today.” The man said, digging into his eggs and sausage. Jack groaned around a mouthful of eggs and threw his head back.
“Seriously? How many times have we had to fix that damn fence this month?” He continued to tear into his toast and breakfast while they talked.
“Three. That’s because of the damn sheep. They just don’t leave it the hell alone. Which reminds me, we’ve gotta eat anythin’ that can go bad soon. We’re movin’ the sheep ‘cross the mountain again this summer.” Jack was amazed at his ability to multitask like that. It surely couldn’t have been easy but he made it appear so.
“Damn it. Okay. We takin’ Jesse with us, right?” He asked, biting off a piece of toast.
“Yep. We’re gettin’ a little raise from last year’s adventure but it will be enough to pay for the fence and then some.” The men finished their meals with some small talk, mostly about the day ahead. With plates in the sink, and mugs in hand, a now full dressed couple stood on the porch, and watched the land. Jesse came up as soon as she saw her owners with a dead squirrel in her mouth and tail a wagging. They laughed and got the squirrel away from her before resting. The same routine everyday, but they loved it. One last moment of piece before they would turn in for the night later on.
They drank their coffee and enjoyed the blissful state of nature around them. Jesse laid at their feet, while Jack wrapped his right arm around his partner’s shoulders. He felt his partner do the same but with his left arm. Jack turned and pressed a kiss to his partner’s head and nuzzled further into the hair that he fell in love with years ago. He always imagined that he would be doing this with Ennis. That’s what his heart wanted for twenty years; twenty years of longing, pain, love, and heartache. But this was even better. A partner that loved him as he loved him, one that stood by his side but called him out when he needed to. Someone to live out his happily ever after with with no doubt that he would crawl through fire and glass just to see Jack happy. Maybe it’s not with who he originally thought it would be, but happily ever after takes a little time to get sometimes.

My Fav MLM Ships + Taylor Swift Songs
1. Harringrove—Steve x Billy (Stranger Things)
False God— Lover
“We were crazy to think
Crazy to think that this could work
Remember how I said I'd die for you?”
“And I can't talk to you when you're like this
Staring out the window like I'm not your favorite town”
“But we might just get away with it
Religion's in your lips
Even if it's a false god
We'd still worship”
“I know heaven's a thing
I go there when you touch me
Honey hell is when I fight with you
But we can patch it up good
Make confessions and we're begging for forgiveness”
“And you can't talk to me when I'm like this
Daring you to leave me just so I can try and scare you”
2. Gallavich—Ian x Mickey (Shameless)
Call It What You Want— Reputation
“Nobody's heard from me for months
I'm doing better than I ever was
'Cause
My baby's fit like a daydream
Walking with his head down
I'm the one he's walking to
So call it what you want, yeah
Call it what you want to”
“All my flowers grew back as thorns
Windows boarded up after the storm
He built a fire just to keep me warm”
“And I know I make the same mistakes every time
Bridges burn, I never learn, at least I did one thing right
I did one thing right
I'm laughing with my lover, making forts under covers
Trust him like a brother, yeah, you know I did one thing right”
3. Philkas—Philip x Lukas (Eyewitness)
Out Of The Woods— 1989
“You took a Polaroid of us
Then discovered
(Then discovered)
The rest of the world was black and white
But we were in screaming color”
“Remember when you hit the brakes too soon?
Twenty stitches in a hospital room
When you started crying, baby, I did too
But when the sun came up, I was looking at you”
“Remember when we couldn't take the heat?
I walked out, I said ‘I'm setting you free’
But the monsters turned out to be just trees
When the sun came up you were looking at me”
4. Evak—Even x Isak (Skam)
Everything Has Changed— Red
“And all I've seen
Since eighteen hours ago
Is green eyes and freckles and your smile
In the back of my mind making me feel like
I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now”
“Cause all I know is we said, ‘Hello’
And your eyes look like comin' home
All I know is a simple name
And everything has changed”
“And all my walls
Stood tall painted blue
But I'll take 'em down, take 'em down
And open up the door for you”
5. Ennis x Jack (Brokeback Mountain)
Cowboy Like Me— Evermore
“And you asked me to dance
But I said, ‘Dancing is a dangerous game’
Oh, I thought
This is gonna be one of those things
Now I know
I'm never gonna love again”
“You're a cowboy like me
Never wanted love
Just a fancy car
Now I'm waiting by the phone
Like I'm sitting in an airport bar”
“Now you hang from my lips
Like the Gardens of Babylon
With your boots beneath my bed
Forever is the sweetest con”
6. Tyrus—TJ x Cyrus (Andi Mack)
Ours— Speak Now
“Seems like there's always someone who disapproves
They'll judge it like they know about me and you
And the verdict comes from those with nothing else to do
The jury's out, but my choice is you”
“And it's not theirs to speculate
If it's wrong, and your hands are tough
But they are where mine belong”
“So don't you worry your pretty, little mind
People throw rocks at things that shine
And life makes love look hard”
“The stakes are high, the water's rough
But this love is ours”
7. Merthur—Merlin x Arthur (Merlin)
Seven— Folklore
“Cross your heart, won't tell no other
And though I can't recall your face
I still got love for you
Your braids like a pattern
Love you to the moon and to Saturn
Passed down like folk songs
The love lasts so long”
“And I've been meaning to tell you
I think your house is haunted
Your dad is always mad and that must be why”
“And just like a folk song
Our love will be passed on”
“Please picture me
In the weeds
Before I learned civility
I used to scream ferociously
Any time I wanted”

some question inspo for the livestream
So you just purchased a ticket (bless u 🫡 have fun) but now you're panicking because of the "interactive" feature of said event? You think of what you could possibly ask them about sunny but are drawing a blank? Do not fret, here are some ideas you can draw inspiration from, if you want. You don't have to of course, it's your money, but I think it's fun and it could be useful to make such a list in case the question you prepared gets asked by someone else first!
If some are worded weirdly, chalk that up to me being ESL, but feel free to reword them to your liking or change them up entirely, it's just for inspo.
Related to sunny:
What inspired you to write [your own favorite episode]?
Are there details such as the shoe print on Mac's The Gang Goes To Hell shirt in Hero or Hate Crime that you're disappointed the fans have missed?
Where is [the dildo bike, the RPG]?
What's [x character] favorite [y thing like singer, show, color, anything you want]?
What do you think Mac used the remaining money from his winning ticket for? (14$)
Do you have plans for Brian JR/do you know what happened in North Dakota/will you explore it more or do you plan to keep it up for interpretation?
S15 was different from all previous seasons, so what were some challenges that were unique to it wether in writing, filming or anything else?
Whose head did The Gang Does A Clip Show take place inside of, Dennis or Charlie?
Why four more seasons in particular?
What's the best season?
What is your favorite episode from each season? Least favorite?
What are some characters you would like to bring back?
How is Charlie and the Waitress' relationship like currently?/What is the Waitress up to?
What would happen if the gang made paddy a gay bar again in the present day? How would things differ from the pilot episode?
Will S16 feature a seasonal arc like S15 did or was it a one off thing?
Has Dennis ever used the algorithm featured in Paddy's Has A Jumper for other things/does he make up algorithms often to try to solve problems?
Do you really not have a show bible?
What are some other actors that you would like to see play Mac's boyfriend if Ryan Reynolds were unavailable or you decided against casting him?
Are there jokes that you're disappointed most fans haven't caught?
Related to macdennis:
Is Mac currently still feeding Dennis blended up pizza and soda shakes?/Dying his hair?
Did The Gang Chokes imply that Mac and Dennis no longer have dinners together but rather they do it with the rest of the gang?/What about movie nights?
Have you ever noticed that Mac and Dennis' names sound a lot like the protagonists in Brokeback Mountain, Jack and Ennis?
What prompted The Gang Gets Romantic to be made?
How was Mac able to afford the RPG?
Was there any reason for the lock in The Gang Escapes to be heart shaped? *insert playful knowing expression 😏*
In The Gang Tends Bar, Mac mentions that Dennis has been distant from him lately and insists it's because he's gay, but Charlie counters saying he's known that since forever so it can't be. Can you tell us a bit more about what the real reasons could be?
What is your favorite Mac and Dennis centric episode and why?
How does Dennis know so much about gay subculture?
Was The Gang Chokes inspired by Phantom Thread?
Related to RCGM:
Does Glenn plan to direct more episodes in S16?
What is Rob's favorite Ryan Reynolds movie?
What is Megan's favorite episode and least favorite?/What episode she wishes she could've helped write?/What has been her favorite episode to work on so far?/What is her favorite character to write for?
What's the hardest character to write for?
What are your impressions of the fandom?
What's your name for the dennis sex doll, and are you aware a subset of fans calls it "rubby reynolds"?
Glenn, what made you rediscover a newfound passion for writing sunny?
How has been the fan reception to the podcast?
Will there be more live events (streamed or in person) in the future?
Glenn, will you ever make more playlists?
You guys grindin'? 🤭 (I'M KIDDING!!)
Okay I have no more ideas left in me 😵💫 but if you feel like adding more please feel free to do so!! Maybe there's a question you're curious about but don't really want to ask yourself, and someone else might...
#iasip#it's always sunny in philadelphia#always sunny#macdennis#live event#im sure everyone has their one question they really wanna know already ready so feel free to ignore#SOMEONE PLEASE RECORD THE EVENT THO IF YOU CAN IF YOU'RE ABLE TO#think of these like plot bunnies... for anyone familiar#sunny fans when they cant go be like: i will make up 20 questions i couldve asked#everyone have fun!!! 🫡🫡 good luck. we have them in our palm friends#im sure im forgetting obvious ones but im dumb#some insane hero will outright ask if they know about macdennis ik they will and i would like to say that i wish their pillows always cold

This hole in my heart
Have you ever had a this one specific OTP, where you only wanted to protect them, like all the damn time? No one else but kindred spirits are allowed to write them, because your heart screams when they aren’t treated the way it shoud be. You hardly can stand the feeling if someone just mentioning them as a side character. You can’t get over the fact, that no one else than yourself knows them best. It’s the silliest thing ever, but that’s a true fangirl’s heart, isn’t it? And I’m behaving obnoxiously stupid...but I just can’t....

For the week of 20 August 2018
Quick Bits:
Aphrodite V #2 is pretty damn great. Jeff Spokes’ artwork is instantly compelling, drawing in the reader with darkness and interesting angles into this increasingly enthralling story of a machine cult from the future by him and Bryan Hill.
| Published by Image / Top Cow
Avengers #6 concludes the first arc in widescreen fashion. Lots of action and big ideas from Jason Aaron with gorgeous art from Ed McGuinness, Paco Medina, Mark Morales, Juan Velasco, and David Curiel. Again I’m reminded of those early issue of JLA from Grant Morrison and Howard Porter. This has been fun so far and I’m intrigued by what else they have in store.
| Published by Marvel
Beasts of Burden: Wise Dogs & Eldritch Men #1 is a very welcome return, even without Jill Thompson for this go around. The artwork from Benjamin Dewey is beautiful as he reminds us that he’s one of the best nature artists in comics, and possible beyond. His animals are just stunning. The story from him and Evan Dorkin is also interesting, suggesting some arcane traps luring in the paranormal. Great stuff for all ages.
| Published by Dark Horse
Big Trouble in Little China: Old Man Jack #12 concludes the series with an epic battle between the forces of heaven and hell as it teaches us the true meaning of friendship. It’s funnier when you actually read it. This has been an entertaining series from John Carpenter, Anthony Burch, Jorge Corona, Gabriel Cassata, and Ed Dukeshire, with this final chapter also delivering a nice farewell to the movie as well.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Black Hammer: Age of Doom #4 has some very interesting revelations that ultimately only lead to more questions than answers. What’s going on isn’t nearly as cut and dried as we were led to believe last issue and the mystery has just deepened. Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston, Dave Stewart, and Todd Klein have managed to elevate this story higher again.
| Published by Dark Horse
Black Panther #3 finally parcels out a tidbit of what might actually be going on with the series and the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda, just in time for a surprise attack and more action. Thankfully, the art from Daniel Acuña is still overwhelmingly gorgeous.
| Published by Marvel
Britannia: Lost Eagles of Rome #2 is even better than the first issue. The mystery deepens as Antonius and Achillia reach Egypt and find incongruities they don’t expect within this province of the Roman Empire. The artwork from Robert Gill (with colours from José Villarrubia) is probably among the best I’ve seen from him, really bringing some very strong work here with backgrounds, vehicles, and character designs that are particularly impressive.
| Published by Valiant
Cold Spots #1 is the start to another horror series from Cullen Bunn, this time accompanied by Mark Torres with the artwork, and as per many of Bunn’s previous tales, this is a great start. There’s a genuinely creepy atmosphere from Torres’ art and the plot of a missing daughter and her child, amidst the spooky maybe-ghosts, is a good one.
| Published by Image
Daredevil #607 gets into how there can possibly be a Mike Murdock running around New York and it’s an interesting and possibly hazardous diversion. Gorgeous art from Phil Noto.
| Published by Marvel
Die!Die!Die! #2 is more entertaining over-the-top humorous action that feels like it’s channelling Garth Ennis. Great art from Chris Burnham and Nathan Fairbairn.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Hunt for Wolverine: Mystery in Madripoor #4 is probably the most succinct in sticking to its plot without real deviation of all of these minis. Basically sticking to the thread of these X-women tackling the Femme Fatales. It’s been a relatively decent story from Jim Zub, Thony Silas, and Felipe Sobreiro, even if the art’s been a little uneven. There’s a really nice sequence of Psylocke finding herself again in this issue, though, from Leonard Kirk and Andrew Crossley that has interesting implications going forward.
| Published by Marvel
Jughead: The Hunger #8 is a great jumping-on point for new readers, offering a bit of a history lesson and summary reinterpretation of the events of the overarching plot of the series to date. Great work from Frank Tieri, Pat & Tim Kennedy, Joe Eisma, Bob Smith, Ryan Jampole, Matt Herms, Andre Szymanowicz, and Jack Morelli.
| Published by Archie Comics / Archie’s Madhouse Presents
The Life of Captain Marvel #2 continues what is shaping up to be possibly one of the defining and quintessential Carol Danvers stories. I love what Margaret Stohl is doing in bringing out the backstory and interpersonal dynamics of Carol’s family. The art from Carlos Pacheco, Rafael Fonteriz, and Marcio Menyz in the present day and Marguerite Sauvage’s flashbacks is wonderful.
| Published by Marvel
Mr. & Mrs. X #2 continues this fun ride, tossing in Deadpool and more of the lesser used intergalactic X-characters. The dialogue from Kelly Thompson is hilarious and the art from Oscar Bazaldua and Frank D’Armata is great.
| Published by Marvel
Old Man Logan #46 begins another arc tying up loose ends before the endgame of Dead Man Logan kicks off. Wrapping reconnecting with Alpha Flight around a horror story evoking shades of The Thing and Slither results in a wonderful story perfectly fitting Damian Couciero’s artwork.
| Published by Marvel
The Punisher #1 is both a continuation of Matthew Rosenberg’s stories and ideas from the last volume of the series and a kind of back-to-basics approach to Frank Castle. Basically, he’s lost the War Machine suit, but he’s still taking on the world-spanning super-villains. It’s pretty epic and this is great jumping-on point. The dark humour is perfect, reminding me of Garth Ennis’ work with Castle, and seriously this is probably the best art that Szymon Kudranski has ever done. Along with Antonio Fabela’s colours, it’s like he was born to draw The Punisher.

Royal City #14 is an introspective end of saying farewell to the past and accepting change to move forward. This has been an interesting series from Jeff Lemire, focusing on his most often used theme of family, and it’s been a good exploration of their different dynamics.
| Published by Image
The Sentry #3 is pretty dark, telling the flipside of the first two issues from Billy Turner’s perspective as he goes about stealing Sentry’s identity. This is almost at Kid Miracleman levels of demented. Jeff Lemire is playing with some interesting ideas here, beautifully brought to life by Kim Jacinto, Joshua Cassara, and Rain Beredo.
| Published by Marvel
Shadowman #6 has some truly beautiful artwork from Renato Guedes, as this arc of Jack falling through time visiting the different holders of the shadow loa takes an interesting turn in ancient history.
| Published by Valiant
Shanghai Red #3 is probably the best issue to date, as Molly reunites with Katie, recriminations are hashed out, and we get a bit of a tour of Portland. Christopher Sebela, Joshua Hixson, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou have tapped into something unique here, and this tale of revenge and some of the lesser told side of American history is incredibly compelling.
| Published by Image
TMNT #85 brings Leatherhead back into the fold, with very interesting and potentially dangerous ramifications following the war between the Utroms and Triceratons. Brahm Revel’s clothes-peg take on the Turtles is an interesting visual choice.
| Published by IDW
The Thrilling Adventure Hour #2 I find better than the first issue. The humour hits home a bit more for me and the leads of Sadie and Frank don’t seem nearly as insufferable as the first issue. The art, though, from MJ Erickson and Brittany Peer is just as good as the first. Entertaining stuff.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Venom #5 is another great issue. The mythology-building in this series is just incredible, growing Venom and his world into so much more. Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles are creating magic.
| Published by Marvel
West Coast Avengers #1 is a great debut, filled with action and humour, as this highly dysfunctional team comes together. It’s nice to see Kelly Thompson doing more Hawkeye and Hawkguy, and the collection of characters coming together to make up the team are bizarre and fitting, carrying on a few of the themes and plot developments of the previous Hawkeye and America series. Though you needn’t have read any of that before you pick this up. Making it nigh unmissable is the gorgeous art from Stefano Caselli and Triona Farrell. This is fun.
| Published by Marvel
Witchblade #7 returns for its second arc, continuing the extremely high level of quality that Caitlin Kittredge, Roberta Ingranata, Bryan Valenza, and Troy Peteri set for themselves.
| Published by Image / Top Cow
X-Men Red #7 advances us a bit further as the X-Men attempt to uncover evidence of Cassandra Nova’s influence on the world and thwart her attack on Atlantis. Tom Taylor has definitely been taking a slow approach to unfurling this story, but it has allowed for the beautiful art from originally Mahmud Asrar and now Carmen Carnero & Rain Beredo time to breathe.

What If Jack Kirby Never Left Marvel?
This is a video I was commissioned to write for Comics Alliance, but it was never actually produced as a video for some reason (and consequently I never got paid for it). The premise was that it might start a new series of videos asking “What if...?” about various key points in comics history.
Anyway, I’ve got no home for this bad boy, so I might as well share it here.
What If Jack Kirby Never Left Marvel? By Benito Cereno
Jack Kirby! The King of Comics! Best known as the defining artistic vision for the early days of Marvel Comics and the co-creator of the Fantastic Four, Captain America, Thor, the X-Men, the Hulk, Ant-Man, Iron Man, the Avengers, and many others, Kirby rocked the comics world in 1970 when he pulled up stakes from the company he had helped make great and moved to its distinguished competition, DC. In this video, however, we will take on the role of Kirby creation Uatu the Watcher and ask: what if Kirby hadn't left Marvel in 1970?
Kirby left Marvel for a number of reasons, including lack of creative control, broken promises by the publisher, and a certain mustachioed showman—whether intentionally or not—receiving most of the credit for Kirby's creations. But let's say these things didn't happen. Let's say Kirby was given more control, more credit, and more satisfying working conditions, and so he never felt the need to leave Marvel's metaphorical bullpen. Kirby's defection to DC is one of the biggest moves in comics history, and one of the defining milestones that separates comics' Silver Age from its Bronze Age. If it didn't happen, how would comics history be different?
Firstly, many of the characters Kirby created for DC wouldn't exist. While some of these concepts would likely have found a home at Marvel—more on that in a second—there are many ideas that were created at the behest of DC editorial that Kirby would not likely have created unprompted. While there are some characters Kirby created in this period—Atlas the Great, the Dingbats of Danger Street, Manhunter, arguably his Sandman revival and even the otherwise beloved Kamandi—whose absence would not have a major impact on DC continuity, others would be more significant.
The Demon, for example, besides having multiple solo series, has also played a major role in such series as Swamp Thing, Sandman, and Green Arrow, was also the original home for Garth Ennis and John McCrea's Hitman, who would later get his own beloved and award-winning ongoing series.
Furthermore, Kirby's run on Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen saw the introduction of Clark Kent's new boss Morgan Edge, the revival of the Newsboy Legion and the Guardian, and the development of the scientific facility that would come to be known as Cadmus. Besides these elements playing a huge role in the Superman mythos from the '70s through the '90s, Cadmus and its related characters are central to major plots from both DC's Justice League Unlimited and Young Justice cartoons. Also, Kirby's DC-era aesthetic is a major influence on the art direction of the Batman: The Brave and the Bold cartoon. No Kirby at DC means a huge difference in DC's animated output.
On the other hand, it's not out of the realm of possibility that some of Kirby's DC concepts might have found a home at Marvel. Besides imagining the possibility of having Kamandi team up with Devil Dinosaur, a couple of Kirby's DC creations started life as ideas for some of his earlier Marvel properties.
The first of these examples is OMAC, the One Man Army Corps. A running motif in Kirby's career is that of the super soldier, running from his first major hit Captain America to the Guardian to the Fighting American back to Captain America to OMAC back to Captain America again and finally Silver Star. OMAC was originally envisioned as a Captain America of the future, perhaps fitting somewhere in the lineage of Captains America throughout history that Kirby envisioned in Bicentennial Battles, a special Cap story he did upon his return to Marvel in the mid-'70s.
With that in mind, it's pretty easy to picture Buddy Blank taking orders from SHIELD, getting beamed enhanced powers from a giant, orbiting Captain America shield in the place of Brother Eye. But past that, it's pretty easy to imagine this future Captain America becoming home to some of the ideas Kirby brought to Original Recipe Cap in the mid-'70s, most notably the Madbomb and Arnim Zola. In fact, it's not much of a stretch to picture OMAC becoming home to many of the more satirical aspects that in actual reality found their way to the pages of the Fourth World, like Glorious Godfrey and Happyland, or Darkseid's Evil Factory. It's pretty easy to imagine Mokkari and Simyan working for Arnim Zola, honestly. And if you can imagine OMAC fighting Arnim Zola in the Evil Factory, you can probably see elements of the “Homo Geneticus” storyline from Silver Star finding a home in that book, too.
And speaking of the Fourth World...
Kirby's most lasting legacy at DC has been the characters and concepts he created for the group of titles that came to be known as the Fourth World, including the New Gods, Mister Miracle, the Forever People, and Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen. Several of these characters have been key members of the Justice League over the years, and concepts such as the Mother Box and the Boom Tube have become inextricable parts of the DCU's DNA in the last four decades. But the biggest of the big contributions here is that stony-faced god of evil, Darkseid.
Kirby, however, originally envisioned the Fourth World as a Thor storyline. Two races of gods were meant to go to war ending in Ragnarok and the total annihilation of the current generation of gods, who would be reborn as, you guessed it, the New Gods. The first page of New Gods even opens with an “epilogue” to that untold story. The gods of New Genesis are literally meant to be reborn versions of the gods of Asgard.
If Kirby had done this story in the pages of Thor as originally planned, that would theoretically mean that Darkseid would have become Marvel's big bad, not DC's. This new god of evil would battle Thor, or maybe Orion, or maybe some mixture of the two.
What this would of course mean is that there would be no need for Jim Starlin to introduce Thanos in 1973, as he could have used Darkseid, or even Metron as he originally intended. Maybe Darkseid gets the Infinity Gauntlet in 1991 instead, and maybe Josh Brolin plays Darkseid in Avengers 3.
As a side note: if Kirby can freely develop the New Gods at Marvel, that means he probably won't need to introduce the Eternals upon his return to the company in 1976. Do the Celestials take the stage in the pages of New Gods, or maybe not at all? Would the Guardians of the Galaxy make their home inside a giant parademon head instead?
But the big question is, who becomes DC's biggest big bad of them all? Darkseid has been at the center of many of DC's major event, in comics, TV, and soon, movies. Without the Fourth World characters and concepts, there's no Great Darkness Saga, or Cosmic Odyssey, or Seven Soldiers, or Final Crisis. Justice League International would probably still happen, but it would be significantly different. That one story where Superman and Big Barda make a porno wouldn't have happened.
Okay, maybe it wouldn't be all bad.
But think about how different Justice League Unlimited would have unfolded with a different villain in Destroyer, or a different threat facing the live action Justice League. Who would it even be? Brainiac? The Anti-Monitor? Eclipso? Maybe the best guess is to imagine that Len Wein and Jim Starlin still create Mongul in 1980, and since he takes the role of “big space guy who can fist-fight Superman,” maybe Cyborg has to teleport him back to War World in order to form the Justice League.
These are just a handful of possibilities for things that could have happened differently if Jack Kirby had been satisfied at Marvel and never left. What is clear is that the King's influence to both companies' expanded universes has been incalculable. The question you have to ask yourself, reader, now that you've taken a peek into this alternate world, is which do you prefer: our reality, or the world of “What If?”

Episode 2: “We Are Legion”
"Is there going to be a place where we list all the comics we talk about?" Well, I’ll be doing my level best for you all. These are the titles mentioned by Amy, Taliesin, or Matt over the course of this episode of the Wednesday Club.
Physical comics: You may have a comic book store near you! Comic Shop Locator Hater Free Wednesdays Your local library may have a selection of physical comics as well. Ask your local librarian (many of us are nerds in disguise!)
Digital comics: Comixology and Comixology Unlimited Each publisher may have comics online for sale, including Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, and more. Again, your local library! Many are part of services such as Hoopla, where you can borrow and read digital comics.
A note on this episode: I’m extremely grateful to these three for tackling this question of mental health in comics, and highlight a few resources. - If you have no fucking clue where to begin looking for help (and you’re in the US): Mental Health America. - If you’re in crisis mode and need to talk, mental health hotlines are great. - If you don’t feel like calling: Crisis Chat If you have further resources to add to this, please let me know!
On to the comics!
From last week’s episode Legion: Wikipedia; IMDB; airing on FX; streaming on Hulu, Amazon
X-Men Legacy (2012) volume 2: Wikia; Comixology; Marvel
Moon Knight - Current run, written by Lemire: Comixology; Marvel - Warren Ellis: Comixology; Marvel - Bendis' LA run: Comixology; Marvel
Doom Patrol - specifically Crazy Jane - Grant Morrison's run: Wikipedia; Comixology
Comics
New Mutants #26: Wikia; Comixology
X-Men Volume 2 (1990s): Mentioned last week #46 and #47, with the X-Babies on the run from Mojo’s hunters.
X-Men Legacy (2012) volume 2: Wikia; Comixology; Marvel
Winter Soldier retcon: The big retcon they’re talking about begins with Captain America Vol 5 #1: Wikia; The first omnibus of this run on Comixology. - There have also been several other big retcons of Cap over the years. We’re promised an episode on this later.
X-Men Legacy (2012) Vol 2 #15: Wikia; Comixology -where Legion confronts his mother (turns out Matt was right about this!)
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s X-Men: Comixology collection (hard to read, according to them) Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s Fantastic Four: Comixology collection (much easier to read, even though it’s the same guys).
Crazy Jane First Appearance: Doom Patrol Vol 2 #19: Wikia; Comixology "nightmare-inducing" - Taliesin - #63 on Comixology: End of Morrison’s run; Cover with Crazy Jane in the rocking chair (The Doom Patrol covers get beautifully weird after about issue #23 and I’m kind of in love with them.)
Alias - Marvel Max (origin of Jessica Jones): Wikipedia; Comixology - Netflix and the comic version are very different, dealing with different traumas.
Green Lanterns #15: I believe this is the issue: Comixology - Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz as two new GLs - Jessica has anxiety, and there’s a literal anxiety spiral
Shade the Changing Girl - Comixology - original was a 1970s character Shade the Changing Man, reinvented in the ‘90s as Rac Shade
Cassandra Cain/Batgirl: she was non-verbal for many years, but James Tynion doesn't want to apply specific labels because of history of specific traumatic abuse with Cassie.
Tom King's Vision: Wikia; Comixology
Kate Bishop: Young Avengers: Comixology - Intro as character Young Avengers Special #1: Wikia; Marvel; Comixology - hero origin story Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye: Wikia; Comixology
Sandman: Wikipedia; Comixology
Old Man Logan (2016-): Wikia; Comixology (I assume they’re talking about the latest run anyway.) - PTSD and masculinity issues
Watchmen: Wikipedia; Comixology
Storm and claustrophobia LifeDeath: Wikia; Comixology - trying to recuperate at Forge's house without powers; identity issues Uncanny X-Men #146: Wikia; Comixology - When captured by Doom, Storm’s claustrophobia causes her powers to lash out at the whole world.
"We never lose our demons, we only learn to live above them" - The Ancient One
Mental Health Professionals X-Factor vol 3 #13: Wikia; Comixology - Doc Samson talking to the X-Factor team in his capacity as a psychiatrist (Not sure what Speedball talking to the Thunderbolts thing they mean) Evil Therapist Karla Sofen aka Moonstone
Ultimates Thor #1: Wikia; Comixology - As a human, worked as a psychiatric nurse until he has a breakdown (Not sure which Miles Morales issues they’re discussing) Avengers Disassembled: Wikia; Comixology Secret War: Wikia; Comixology - Note that this is a different event than Secret Wars. Or Secret Wars II. Because Marvel ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Moon Knight 2010-2012 #1 cover shown: Wikia; Comixology - Current run, written by Lemire: Comixology; Marvel - Warren Ellis: Comixology; Marvel - Bendis' LA run: Comixology; Marvel
Deadpool vs Carnage: Wikia; Comixology - The Punisher, by Garth Ennis: for the violence: There seem to be at least three separate runs of Ennis on Punisher, starting with this Uncanny X-Force: Wikia; Comixology Spider-Man/Deadpool: Wikia; Comixology
X-Factor, the original team: Wikia; Comixology X-Factor, led by Havok: Wikia; Comixology (beginning with #71) X-Factor Investigations: Wikia; Comixology X-Factor: Madrox: Wikia, Comixology
X-Men Forever: Wikia; Comixology or X-Factor Forever: Wikia; Comixology
Red Hood and the Outlaws: Wikia; Comixology
Robot Robin from DC One Million: Wikia;
Invincible Iron Man #500.1: Wikia; Comixology - Tony Stark attends an AA meeting
Books that got our presenters through a dark time Matt - Doctor Strange: Wikia; Comixology - more that this is the character he identifies with than anything else Amy - books she likes; Sandman: Wikipedia; Comixology is very dark, but about finding hope in darkness Taliesin - (not sure what he means by the Max?); Ultimate Spider-Man (I think he means the 2000-2009 run?) for something lighter and fun
Not strictly comics: Legion: Wikipedia; IMDB; airing on FX; streaming on Hulu, Amazon Taliesin says he’s going to rewatch Pink Floyd and Dark Side of the Moon? One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (the institution in Legion (tv) is very reminiscent of the one in this movie). Arkham - Gotham episode (cartoonishly bad, according to them). Royal Tennenabaums and reconciliation Jay and Miles X-plain the X-Men - I can personally back this up, I started listening to it after ECCC this year because of the Wednesday Club, ngl. Comic Book Girl 19: Epic History X-Men Volume 1, The 60s Era Yes, And... in improv Critical Role: Episode 1: episodes 1-16 as watching someone (Taliesin) being on the wrong meds and working out which ones were right. "The Beast in Me" - Johnny Cash - Taliesin’s Hulk song Dr. Andrea Letamendi/Arkhamasylumdoc - podcast the Arkham Sessions "The Clock King" episode
Remember: "Take strength where you can, take hope where you can, and never be worried about asking for help."
Next Week The Image Comics Revolution - Image Comics - The Image Revolution (documentary about the birth of Image comics): IMDB, trailer; Streaming on Youtube, Amazon, and elsewhere. - If your library has Hoopla, Hoopla has all of the Image comics, including Bitch Planet, ODY-C
