rather than who you would like to see on the next taskmaster series, who do you think will be on it? like just your predictions or any inklings you may have!

anon if you're still around then you'll know i really took my time with this hahaha so sorry! i hope anyone reading this takes it as just a bit of fun and nbd, who knows who we'll get or who alex & the network have in mind! i'm answering thoughtfully (bc i always feel guilty not to 😩 so sorry this is long lol) but it's really just fun!!

i will say, of the more recent-ish series, i did get a few right!!! krishnan guru-murthy, nicola coughlan, alan davies, judi love, sue perkins, john robins, and joanne mcnally were people i just knew would eventually be on if the show could get their schedules right, and i was also certain sarah millican and dara ó briain would be asked — though not necessarily that they'd actually agree. when you have a level of seniority and esteem, the "it's such a great opportunity" aspect of the show isn't such a draw 😅 for some reason i feel SO PROUD about guessing nicola! i was just WAITING and wish sooooo much she had done a full series 😭😭😭 (how fun would saoirse-monica jackson be too!)

anyways, as for people who haven't been on yet — and this isn't to say i want them all to be, just that i think it's likeliest they have been asked or will be asked; i talked about who i want to see a little while ago here — it's important to consider the casting 'roles' the network has in mind when working with the producers to form a series, so i will keep that in mind too!

established comedian, typically a straight white man over 40: bill bailey, vic reeves, harry hill, geoff norcott, kevin bridges, adam buxton, ade edmondson, paul whitehouse (tommy tiernan? god i feel bad for not saying ed byrne but why do i feel like he's not gonna make it in the next few series? i'm on the fence with nick helm — unless he's friends with alex, then his chances go up significantly imo — and tom allen for some reason, and i feel like john bishop is almost too much of an ask?)

fresh talent comedian, typically a man under 40: rhys james, huge davies, ahir shah, darren harriott would be my top guesses but tbh any of the semi-recent edinburgh comedy award finalists are good bets as a majority of the winners from the last ~10 years have been on the series + throwing out tom rosenthal (i know he's not fresh fresh and also mostly an actor)...and, like, jazz emu?...just because if taskmaster know how much its audience adores weird little white twinks then they'll cast them

female or non-binary comedian: 100% sarah keyworth + harriet kemsley, maisie adam, jess fostekew, suzi ruffell. i've shifted away from betting on cariad lloyd and catherine bohart for some reason... (joanne was my no.1 lady bet for the last like 4 series hahaha)

non-comedian: this is very, very hard to predict because between comedy actors, non-comedy actors, tv presenters, news people, reality & social media stars... the potential predictions are just so endless! logically, the most likely is an established actor with a lot of comedy connections (think sally phillips, lolly adefope, liza tarbuck, sian gibson, daisy may cooper, susan wokoma; this category is where tm gets quite a few of its female contestants): matt holness, kevin eldon, amanda abbington, tom davis, sharon horgan, kathy burke, georgia tennant (also friends w alex?), su pollard, tom basden, apparently anyone from the cast of ghosts, and so on and so on and so on... + i'll also throw out maggie aderin-pocock as a serious contender + i really feel like one of the spice girls will be on new years treat

friend of alex: john robins was the prediction for the past few series, so just worth keeping in mind other people in this circle include elis james, matthew crosby, tom neenan, and so on

these are almost all of my fr big heavy hitters when it comes to placing bets! but there are of course so many people i didn't name who i could totally see on either a main series or the ny treat — so many people just make sense and that's the beauty of taskmaster!!

as much as the binary boyfriends drama is my favorite part of season 6, the logistics of it baffle me to no end. First of all, I have absolutely no idea why Eli would not simply submit an EA application if he was already planning to. EA (early action), unlike ED (early decision) is NOT legally binding, meaning if you are accepted EA, you do not have to attend that school. While the application deadline is earlier, it seems that by September/October of his senior year, he was still planning to apply EA, which means that most likely, his applications were already done bc that’s what you do if you plan for EA. Like, I agree with demetri, not applying EA does significantly lower your chances and there’s no reason to decide last minute not to submit your application. Application fee maybe, but it’s $75 and you cannot convince me that Mr. Eli “new ugly color coordinated athleisure set every day” Moskowitz cannot afford that. MIT doesn’t even have ED so you can’t convince me that’s what the writers meant. Even if you want to keep your options open, but still have even the slightest inkling you want to go to MIT you should apply early action. People apply EA to schools they don’t want to go to all the time. AND FURTHERMORE, the drama is so silly to me because there’s like so many colleges in Boston alone, let alone Massachusetts as a whole, Eli does not need to be at MIT specifically for them to stay close. (However demetri alexopolous has the right to be upset about truly anything, I think he’s earned it)

To be honest, this is supposed to just be seen as complete gibberish, but they actually do say something. It's written with the Inkling font by Eli, which is found here. It's a little distorted, but I think you could try to decrypt it if you want (though I actually don't remember what it exactly says). I was originally going to use Wingdings, but I couldn't get it to look right. I actually had the Inkling font installed for a Splatoon project that never took off, so I just used that instead xD

As for how many chapters Firmware Update is going to have... to be honest I'm not really sure. I think somewhere around the 12-15 chapter range, depending on how things turn out. But I'm willing to extend it or cut it down if I feel the story needs it.

Now i just realize that this was a big project, but I intended this to keep me busy until the Hi-Fi Rush DLC or the sequel and well... I still intend to finish this out though, no matter how long it might take.

What I'm Watching: January 2024

New year, same monthly roundup. And off to a solid start with what can probably be summed up as Robert Englund month...

Zombie Strippers!

The exclamation point is important. This movie was like sticking real diamonds on costume jewelry. Which is to say, it's exactly what it sounds like, but contained some surprising gems. But then, horror comedies are just like that. There was plenty of ridiculousness (to be expected for a movie about a zombie outbreak infecting dancers at a strip club), but I'm still impressed at how well the humor landed. I mean, they really didn't have to try that hard. But no, it was genuinely funny and had more than a few existential moments, and I loooooooooove me some existentialism. Throw in some gore and so many boobs, and there ya go. Made for a niche audience with love.

Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon

I need to study this movie. To be fair, you almost have to as a matter of honor, if you're a horror nerd, because there are so many goddamn references. Don't take that as me complaining, tho, because one thing about me is I'm a fucking nerd. I didn't think it was possible to get more meta than Scream without getting gimmicky, but this one pulls it off. I knew enough about the plot to know more or less where things were heading, but there was still enough of a mystery to keep me on my toes, and the twist is the kind that makes you feel proud of yourself for piecing together. Even if slasher movies aren't your thing, this is still a ton of fun.

Urban Legend

I live blogged this and had a great time with it. This is another one for the "best watched with friends" list, and one I'm going to have to come back to for sure. And in case you haven't heard, I love Professor Wexler.

Cowboy Bebop

What? You thought I'd watch the live action without it tripping the rewatch sensor for the anime? Besides, I've only ever seen the sub and I've heard the dub is just as good. And folks...IT IS. IT REALLY IS. I'm not quite mentally prepared for the spiral the finale will send me into, so I'm taking my time with it. But again, I'm not complaining. It looks beautiful, it sounds fantastic (THE MUSIC!!! HAVE YOU HEARD THE MUSIC!!!) and it's just so fucking cool. Joss Whedon can suck it, because Firefly can't touch this.

The Last Showing

This was a fun thriller. You gotta love it when you can see the love of the genre and the art of cinema itself so clearly in a piece. Stuart reads like Stanley Kubrick if he never made it as a director, and on one hand, I wanted the poor guy to finish his movie, but on the other...bro, you can't do that.

2001 Maniacs

Well, this sure was a movie that I watched. Not gonna lie, I wasn't sure I was gonna make it through this one, as it goes for the over-the-top Southern redneck stereotype that goes into caricature territory reeeeaaaaally fast and finishes it off with the usual horny douchebag mid-2000's protagonists that don't even try to make you like them much less invest in them, but once you realize where things are going, you wanna see how it plays out. I cannot emphasize enough how over the top and how horny the first half of the movie is, but the inevitable gore is so theatrical it's fun, and it has plenty of laughs once you stop taking it seriously. It's one of those where the ending recontextualizes everything leading up to it without everything hinging on the twist, which I always appreciate. And I was not a bit surprised to see Eli Roth.

Hereditary

In hindsight, there were better gifs I could have used. *shudder* This was the first rewatch of the year, and honestly, it's been analyzed, raved over, and talked about much better by people who actually like it, so I don't have much to contribute. Not that I hate it, really. It is a well made, nerve-wracking, gut-wrenching movie, but it's just not for me, and that's okay. Hard to pin down exactly where they lose me (I have an inkling, but it'll take more time to discuss than I'm willing to spend here), but the stuff that works, WORKS. Some bits had me shaking. Others had me trying my hardest not to burst into tears. It's excruciating to sit through, I tip my hat to everyone involved in it, and I never want to watch it again.

A Surprise Visit (3/3)

"SH*T! IT'S GRIZZCO INDUSTRIES!" Pearl screamed angry

"ATARIME!" From the helicopter, a familiar voice was heard, it was Cassandra "WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU!"

"That's the Cohozuna and the Inkling half Salmonid! Attack them!" Mayra exclaimed

The helicopters launched attacks to the Cohozuna, causing the Cohozuna to start moving away from Hagglefish Market

"NO COHOZUNA!" Pearl also received an attack, the attack caused her to drop Sparkles and Pearl fell away from there

"UGH! YOU RUINED EVERYTHING!" Pearl said from the sea, seeing the Cohozuna, she swam to where it was

"There are too many! Cohozuna and I won't be able to defeat them... I have no choice but to run... for now." Pearl thought

Meanwhile, Cassandra and Elizabeth got off the helicopter to go help Atarime

"Atarime!" Elizabeth ran to where Atarime was to help her

"E... Eli... za... beth...?" Atarime could barely speak, she was too weak

"Oh no! Sparkles!" Cassandra found Sparkles and help her "Are you okay? it's me Cassandra!"

Sparkles was okay, she had not suffered damage from Pearl, after seeing Cassandra, she was a little happy, but she was very worried about Atarime

"LISTEN TO ME ATARIME!" in the distance, Pearl spoke, she was about to leave with her Cohozuna

"THIS WON'T BE THE LAST TIME YOU SEE ME! THE NEXT TIME I COME BACK... I WILL COME BACK WITH AN ARMY OF SALMONIDS! WE WILL ATTACK THE CITY AND WE WILL HAVE NO MERCY! AND I WILL KILL YOU!"

"SEE YOU SOON ATARIME! HAHAHAHAH!" After saying that, Pearl escaped along with her Cohozuna into the sea, the helicopters couldn't locate her, she was already gone

"An... An army...?" Cassandra said scared

"That doesn't sound good..." Elizabeth said "B-but there's no time to think about that right now! We have to get Atarime to a hospital! She's losing a lot of blood! Quick! Cassandra help me get her to the helicopter!"

"Yes! Sparkles! jump into my bag! We have to go!" Cassandra said, Sparkles jumped into Cassandra's bag

Elizabeth and Cassandra put Atarime on the helicopter, Mayra and Ivy we're waiting for them in the helicopter

"I think they're gone! They ran away!" Ivy said

"Damn it! They escaped! but I'm sure this won't be the last time we'll see them..." Mayra exclaimed angry

"Mayra! Get us to a hospital quick! Atarime is very hurt!" Elizabeth said

"Alright!" Mayra said while she was driving the helicopter, they left the place immediately

"*Sigh*.... I failed to kill her, Xena." Pearl was talking to Xena on a transmitter "But don't worry. I won't let it happen again."

"You better not!" Xena spoke into the transmitter angry "We need her dead before Tartar finds out! If she finds out about this, she'll be very upset and we'll be in trouble!"

"I'm warning you Pearl. If she's not dead when you get back to that city, I'll take care of this myself. And you'll be in trouble. Got it?"

"Understood. I'll kill her next time."

okay so im thinking about the timeline of the difference between hl2 and ep1 cuz like at the end of hl2 elis still in the citadel or atleast currently leavjng it and then jn the beginning of ep1 eli And kleiner are somewhere outside c17

its not clear where they are and by the time of the beginning of ep2 theyre at white forest

so my intial thoughts wer or its the next morning but now im thinking about if they might already be at whiteforest by the start of ep1? cuz when alyx first finds you she says eli was sure she wouldnt find gordon at the base of the citadel (which also hello possible sibtle ref that eli knows about gman and assumes he got gordon again and also the possibility that he might think gman also got him at the end of hl2 and sorta had an inkling where hes been for 20 years ouch), the phrasing of which implies that its been more than just the night becuz shed need to have time to a)set up her terminal and b) for eli to get somewhere with another working terminal and to also be in the same place as kleiner

plus them asking if alyx is out of the city implies that they themselves are out of the city which is mostly woods so theres probably only a few places they could be with that form of communication

then theres also the fact that apparently droves of people have been escaping the city and that theres only a "few" people left (who knows how much relatively a few means) which also implies that both the time inbetween the two games and the course of ep1 is anywhere between a day to a few days, possibly on the longer side due to it not being a govnt organized effort plus the general collapsong nature of the city And the combat many people have to go thru to leave

then when we look at the course of ep1 and inbetween ep 2 we dk t see alyx getting the chance to commu icate with eli ornkleiner again as the o yl way we see people communicating is with the terminals, (while this is obvs more a convenie ce to help tell the player whos talking and when to help build characyer cuz having alyx talking thru a small radio just wouldnt be the same, im going to conti ue to assume this is the only way for her to get in contact with the gang) so when she says in ep2 that theyre in whiteforest the o ly chance shed have for them to tell her that would be if they were already at whiteforest at the start of ep1, though of course im realizing as i write this that she could have just deduced that they were there becuz magnusson is also in that call and he seems to be a fixture at wf so it could just be that

but anyways uh so concluding thoughts, onbetween hl2 and ep1 its probably been at least a day between 2 and ep1 whoch it itself probably takes more than a day

is the entirety of this post essentially pointless and nonviable becuz i realized that eli and kleiner would never have tell tell alyx theyre at white forest becuz she sees magnusson in that one call in ep2?? yes

The office was just as elegant as the rest of the manor, dark wood and furniture, plush carpets over polished floors, and a wall lined with heavy bound books, she couldn't quite make out the titles from where she was but she imagined they were all about geography and history and important things for a soldier to know, the man from before sat behind the desk, looking over some paperwork with another soldier, when he saw she'd arrived he quickly waved the man away “we'll finish this later”  he turned his attention on her “well now, Miss Fairy, you clean up quite well, shall we have a chat?” she nodded, taking a better look at him now that she was calm, He seemed as polished and elegant as the room around them.

His dark hair was combed smooth now, but the ends were beginning to curl around his clean shaven jawline in the front, the back seemed to be tied back into a ponytail of sorts, the low gaslight of the lanterns on the walls turned his skin a warm brassy colour and highlighted the soft definition of his muscular frame. The calm of his expression was palpable, the corners of his mouth curled up at the edges in a warm welcoming way that had Elinor's tense shoulders sagging comfortably before she realised. His eyes, reflecting the green hue of ferns and forest grass the way it should have looked, were at once both embracing and unreadable. How could a man be such a contradiction? Elinor's eyes searched for answers in the way his hands clasped each other, in the way his broad shoulders sat formally square, the way his clothes hugged him. He wore a loose linen shirt with the sleeves rolled halfway up his forearm, tied to his neck with threads just loose enough to exposed the inklings of his collarbones. The coat he had been wearing earlier hung over the back of his chair, laced with gold thread against red fabric and glinting at the pockets with medals. Elinor realized then that this was a space where his guard was lowered significantly, He had been civil, and even a bit friendly to her earlier, but here he wasn't putting on a soldier's face, and she was partaking in such a sanctimonious way the line between Commander Cadfael and... someone else.

He relaxed back into his seat “Do you intend to just stare at me, Fairy?” he tilted his head slightly, the sleight curve of his mouth turning into an amused smile. She flexed and curled her toes uncomfortably and looked down at her lap quickly, feeling the tips of her ears and the back of her neck get warm “here, how about I start off the conversation then, What is your name? You probably don't want me to keep calling you Fairy or Blue, right?” He leaned forward across the desk to try and draw her gaze back up to him.

She bit her lip hard for a moment, she wasn’t sure if the cover story she’d made up would convince anyone, but she doubted taht telling him the full situation was a good idea “I’m, uh…Amellius” she tried to sound casual about it, but she couldn’t even convince herself

“Amellius? What an unusual name, I don’t think I’ve heard anything like it before”

“Most people call me Amell or Eli, if that”s easier for you” she offered quickly.

He shook his head and sat back in his chair “now now, we’re hardly friendly enough to be using nicknames for eachother, I was just making an observation. So, where are you from, Amelius? Do you live around these parts?”

“No, I’m from…further away, It’s a tiny little place I doubt someone as important as yourself has heard of” please, please don’t ask any more questions about it.

“Hmm, is that so.” he said simply, thinking for a moment, Then tell me, why were you in the forest, so far from home? You clearly weren’t happy to be there so I doubt you were out for a comfortable nature walk, especially in a forest that has seen so much rebel activity lately.” he had his hands folded in front of him now, elbows resting on the plush arms of his seat as he seemingly studied her.

Eli squirmed under his firm gaze, but didn't dare look elsewhere, finding herself somewhat uncomfortably staring as his chin, so it would at least look like she was still looking at him properly “well…” she said after a moment, if she was too quick to tell, he would absolutely know she was lying “to tell the truth I'm looking for someone, a friend of mine, she was supposedly seen around the village not long ago” The captain raise an eyebrow ever so slightly, inclining his head in a gesture for her to continue “I asked around a little and someone said they saw her in the forest, so I was looking”

“And did you report your friend missing to the guard? We have the manpower to search more thoroughly than one young lady, and would raise far less suspicion”

“It uh…didn't occur to me?” She tried, half shrugging and now dropping her gaze into her lap finally, she'd stared long enough, she thought “she's a bit skittish so I thought it better to not put her in the path of intimidating soldiers”

“How frank of you, not many would call us intimidating to our face” he gave a dry chuckled that made the hairs on her arms stand up “am intimidating you now, Amelius?” The cold edge on his voice as he asked her made her tense all over again, gone was the charming warmth when he'd greeted her, he seemed to be a soldier again, she could only hope this wasn't an interrogation. Before Elinor could answer, a sharp knock on the office door fractured the air between them and the captain sighed “Enter”. The soldier marched in and right over to the captain's side, casting a half glance at Elinor as he whispered something, Elinor barely caught the sharp edges of the word ‘cat’ and her stomach sunk in dread. The captain sighed more heavily this time and waved the older off, looking at her again “I'll have to conclude our little chat here, Amelius, you may go. Do try to stay out of trouble and next time your friend runs off, consider asking for help finding her, some folks get a little antsy seeing folks run around the forest” he warned, watching her as she quickly stood, muttering a clumsy farewell and all but ran out the door.

By the time Elinor found her way back to the rose covered cottage the sun was well and truly eating, casting everything in a hazy twilight purple outside, while inside warm yellow lanterns lit the four figures sitting in the living room.

Claudia had twisted herself so far sideways on the ouch she was practically upside down, one leg slung over the back of the least grandmother-y floral couch, a book held up over her head that she was reading from “-And from the ashen ruins the wrathful Momes emerged, disturbed by the Great Jabber Beast’s rampage, they descended on the villages, but to the amazement of the watching towns folk they- oh, Elinor, you're back!” She was the first to see, the door just in the corner of her vision “Auryn went out to find you since you were taking so long” she rolled over to start sitting up.

Imogen had been almost asleep on the far end of the couch and only opened one eye to see that the blonde wasn't visibly injured or actively bleeding everywhere “didja have a nice walk? Blow off all that temper of yours?” She drawled, until Alec leaned over and flicked the top of her head 

“don't, Imi, we don't need any more Alices throwing tantrums” the comment grated against Elinor but she bit her tongue, all it would do was start a fight anyway

 “actually i was delayed because I had to deal with the guards patrolling the area” she sighed, all four immediately perked up, the girls all looked varying amounts of alarmed, but it was Theodore's reaction that surprised her most, he'd been silently pacing up until now but he immediately turned on his heel and marched over to a cabinet, throwing it open and pulling out a carpet bag without a word.

“Theo, calm down,” Alec separated herself from Imogen and stood to stop his fretting back and forth. “Just because she ran into them, doesn't mean anything happened, right?” She glanced back at the blonde who nodded quickly “see? She didn't tell them about us, calm down and stop packing” she assured him “we just need to keep an eye out for their patrols more closely from now on” she put her hands on his shoulders, which had her all but raising them over her head, but the gesture seemed to comfort Theodore all the same and he set the bag down with a heavy thump that stirred up dust from the corners and knicknacks. “There now, that's settled” Alec clapped her hands, stepping back to face the room “now, Alices, to bed with you all, we have training again tomorrow and it's going to be even more difficult than the combat today, we need your brains sharp!” She ordered, Elinor opened her mouth to object and this time Claudia jumped in, clapping a hand over her mouth and ushering her away.
